was privileged to attend the dedication service at Harry’s Patch. With the poppies and flowers in full bloom, the garden is a poignant yet stunning tribute to the 44 men from Ivybridge who fought and died in World War One. Monday, 4 August, 2014, at 10pm is the point, exactly 100 years ago, when Britain declared war on Germany, and the Great War started. The Ivybridge branch of the Royal British Legion is holding a candlelight service at Harry’s Patch to mark the historic moment (see page 5). We are commemorating the centenary, too, with a new series, Ivybridge during The Great War (page 5). The series will recount what life was like in the town during the war as well as remembering the men from the town who died. I am indebted to Tony Rea, who not only approached me with the idea for the series, but who has also done an amazing amount of work researching the stories of the men listed on the War Memorial who died during the war and what life was like in the town as the fighting raged on the continent. Do you know an unsung hero who works, often behind the scenes, to make a real difference to the community? THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918

RECOUNTING LIFE IN THE TOWN O OO REMEMBERING THE FALLEN

by tony rea

O

n 4th August 1914 Britain declared war on Germany. The Ivybridge war memorial commemorates 44 of the men who died during the Great War – the first world war – which followed. So far this year there has been much media attention focussed on WW1 and we can expect more. The fighting continued until November 1918, and soon after the soldiers and sailors returned to Ivybridge. But the war did not formally end until June 1919 at the Paris Peace conference, and the final Ivybridge casualties died in December 1919. What happened back home in Ivybridge? Throughout the period August 1914 to December 1919 the river Erme continued to flow, the view over the Beacon from Fore Street changed colour with each season and the people of Ivybridge carried on. No doubt they were affected by the war; by news of local casualties, the conversion of the economy to war work and by international events. How will the town commemorate these events of 100 years ago? A lot is already happening: exhibitions, poppies and bookmarks at the primary schools; and the Royal British Legion project – Harry’s Patch. Our own project is to record in The Ivybridge magazine a short report on every month of the war, hopefully accompanied by a relevant picture. Tony Rea, a locally-based historian and author, is co-ordinating the project. As appropriate, this may focus on one of the Ivybridge dead, or on local or international events.

At the time of writing we have very little information about the following: • F. H. Clarke • Private W. Mann • Private E. A. Northcott • Sergeant E. Russell • Private H. Stockman • J. Simmons Any information about these men will be particularly welcomed.

Candlelight service to mark centenary of outbreak of the War The Royal British Legion is holding a Candlelight service at Harry’s Patch, (by the roundabout opposite the Police Station) at 10pm on Monday, 4 August, the point at which World War One began 100 years ago. People are welcome to bring their own candle. On the same night, people are being encouraged to turn off their lights between 10pm and 11pm and leave only a single light or candle for this symbolic act of reflection and hope. It is part of a national moment of reflection to mark the centenary of the start of the war. facebook.com/theivybridgemagazine

A service of dedication was held on Saturday, 19 July, at Harry’s Patch at which the names of the 44 men from Ivybridge who died in World War One were read out. Local dignitaries, representatives from the RBL and the town’s MP twitter.com/ivybridgemag

Gary Streeter joined local people for the service. With the poppies and flowers in full bloom, Harry’s Patch is a fitting Garden of Remembrance and Memorial to the men of Ivybridge who died in the Great War.

20TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS FOR COMMUNITY TRANSPORT SERVICE

Members of 2nd Ivybridge Brownies joined with other Brownies from Erme Valley Division for Star Quest to celebrate the end of the Brownie centenary celebrations. They played games from the past, made stomp rockets, bracelets and constellation viewers and finished with a Big Brownie Birthday, Star Quest cake. The girls have also been collecting loose change for the Starlight Children’s Foundation, which grant wishes to seriously and terminally ill children, and to boost the proceeds they also aim to make 100 cups of tea and invited members of the public to come and buy cakes they had made to go with their cuppa. î To join the adventure and to help more girls enjoy Brownies for many more years to come, visit www.girlguiding.org.uk/get_involved.aspx

A BIG THANK YOU

Members of PL:21 and local volunteers made a fantastic start on a new community vegetable garden around the Youth Venue. The aim is to turn the area into an organic community vegetable garden that local residents will be able to help themselves to. The hard working group cleared an area for wild 6

flowers, began the creation of a herb garden and tidied the rest of the plot. The group is currently trying to raise funds to buy materials to create planters and to purchase a fence and water butt for the garden.

Special thanks go to Val Carmichael for organising it. Ivybridge & District Community Transport Association is celebrating its 20th year providing vital transport services in the area. Association chairman and founder member Alan Hutson told the group’s AGM last month that the service was launched because back in 1994 there was no suitable transport for the elderly who wanted to do their shopping in Ivybridge. With the assistance of Devon County Council, a twice a week ‘Ring & Ride’ service was launched. From very modest begin-

nings, I&DCTA now carries the second highest number of passengers per week of any CTA in Devon. The ‘Ring & Ride’ service operates five days a week, serving Ivybridge and surrounding parishes. A voluntary car service is also coordinated by the association to take people who have no transport of their own and have difficulty in using public transport. There is currently a shortage of volunteer drivers from Yealmpton & Ivybridge and new recruits would be most welcome.

CALLING ALL ENTERPRISING WOMEN A free event showcasing the support available for women who are starting or growing their own business is being held at The Watermark on 11 September, 2014. The event will be a chance to share business knowhow with inspiring company over tapas and drinks. î devonrcc.org.uk/event

DISCOVER

Dartmoor THE AMAZING COUNTRYSIDE ON YOUR DOORSTEP

Icons of Dartmoor By Ann Willcocks onies have lived on Dartmoor since prehistoric times and are an iconic and well-loved feature of this landscape. While they roam freely on the moor, they actually belong to different pony keepers. However, they have not usually been handled hence appear to be ‘wild’. The ponies which graze Harford Moor play an important part in the management of the common for the environmental agreement. Their grazing of the gorse shoots in particular is recognised as very beneficial for the control of vegetation. The ponies on this common are owned by three local families, all of whom have kept ponies for many generations. The pony numbers need to be maintained in order to meet the requirements laid down in the Higher Level Stewardship Agreement by Natural England. The strict grazing calendar is agreed between the grazing commoners and Natural England, which designates the number of ponies that must graze the common during the year. A small supplement is received by the owners for the provision of the ponies. Every year there is a drift in October, when the owners round up all the ponies into either Rutt break or Coombeshead and sort them into family groups. The young fillies (females) which are to be retained for breeding are marked and turned back to the moor with their mothers, who will teach them their herd’s ancestral ‘lear’ or grazing routes. Sometimes they have a winter ‘lear’, out of the biting winds, where gorse is more plentiful. The summer ‘lear’ may be on the higher, more exposed parts of their common where the winds blow the flies away. All colts( males) have to be removed from the moor, unless they seem worth inspecting for use as stallions. In the past, there was always a good market for ponies, however, times have changed and there is now a surplus. Before looking at what happens to this surplus of ponies, it is important to understand why the ponies are still allowed to breed when there is no market for them. On Harford Moor, no stallions run with the mares. However, when a mare is in season – which is very soon after she has foaled – a stallion, or as they call them on Dartmoor, a

‘horse pony’, will track many miles in search of these mares. Great efforts have been made and continue to be made to clear the moors of the stray horse ponies. Once this is achieved the next step may well be to remove stallions either for certain periods of time or completely. However, this is a very controversial issue across Dartmoor, as many farmers will argue that it is the stallions that keep the mares to their lear. The debate continues, but there have been great achievements across the moor with the control of pony numbers. Gathering the ponies off the common, or drift as it is known, is very difficult and dangerous. There is a great expanse of moorland to cover and every common has to overlap onto contiguous commons to try and gather as many ponies as possible. It is not only the weather that is often against the pony gatherers, but the ground conditions and the clever mind of the ponies themselves! So what happens to the surplus ponies that come off the moor? There is a small market for the fatter ponies, as, whatever one may think, Dartmoor ponies offer good quality

meat, naturally reared, with no additives. There are a few abattoirs around which take ponies for meat. At the present time there is no live export market for ponies, unless they are for breeding. The transport regulations for ponies allow only four ponies per compartment on a lorry or in a trailer, which is not cost effective. Of the remaining ponies, some will find new homes, either through one of the many rescue pony associations or via the sale ring. Failing that, the Dartmoor Hill Pony Association has developed a fall back scheme which takes the ponies straight from the farm, reducing any stress of movement, and slaughters the animals for zoo meat. The carnivores at some of the West Country zoos are looking very well on a very natural product! There is a recognised place for the pony on Dartmoor. Despite the economics of pony keeping, it is in the blood of the pony keepers that they remain an integral part of the landscape. It is important to understand that despite the need to remove some ponies, it must be a pony of a certain standard and hardiness that remains to graze our commons.

SEPTEMBER SONG 4

This amazing Poppy Mosaic was made by young people at the Active Ivybridge event at the beginning of July. The Community Poppy Mosaic project fits in with the upcoming centenary commemorations of World War I 1914-2014, and also encouraged the young people to think about current and former military personnel and their families. The project was facilitated by church groups, who run activities for young people, and funded by SHDC.

Ivybridge Friends of Children's Hospice South West are putting on their fourth September Song to raise money for Little Harbour, which is the Children’s Hospice that local families use. September Song 4 will be held at St Austin’s Priory at 7.30pm on Friday, 5 September. Performing will be two barbershop quartets, Odyssey and Jigsaw, and a newly-formed group called Four in Harmony.

YOUNG FARMERS’ 75th ANNIVERSARY Ivybridge Young Farmers Club is holding its 75th Anniversary celebration at Sparkwell Village Hall on Saturday, 16 August. There will be cream teas and cakes from 3pm, cake cutting and photos at 7pm, followed by hog roast, bar and music from 8pm.

PILGRIM COURSE Many people say that they are spiritual, but not religious. Prayer, contemplation and silence are important to us and increasingly so in an ever more frantic world, says Chris Osborne, Vicar of Ivybridge. At St John’s, we have learned the value of silence and we are beginning to understand more about prayer, which is why we are offering, as part of the Church of England’s Pilgrim Course, a series of six mornings or evenings on the subject of the Lord’s Prayer, the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples. Of course, there shall be discussion and probably a lot of fun, but there will be time to be quiet and to pray. I hope that you shall join us.

FAMILIES SAY THANK YOU TO CHILDREN CENTRE VOLUNTEERS Families and staff at SeaMoor Children’s Centre have said “Thank You” to the hard working volunteers who help run the groups that the centre provides for families with children under five in the Ivybridge area. ‘Time to say thank you’ was the motto of National Volunteers’ Week and each group presented the volunteers with a certificate to say thank you for helping in the groups. Volunteers help with all aspects of running the groups and helping the

team in the office at the children’s centre. Jean Roberts, who helps with the dads’ group and Messy Play groups said: “I was so surprised to be presented with the certificate by the children. I thoroughly enjoy helping and get a feeling of satisfaction from volunteering.” SeaMoor Children’s Centre is run by Action for Children and is based in the Town Hall in Ivybridge.

The DNPA rangers work on different sectors across the Park, each with a number of parishes to cover. The Ranger service provides cover across Dartmoor for 364 days of the year including weekends and bank holidays. Andrea works throughout the parishes of Sheepstor, Meavy, Bickleigh, Shaugh Prior, Cornwood and Harford. She works part time for DNPA and has worked for the authority for 10 years. Ella works throughout the parishes of Dean Prior, Buckfastleigh, West Buckfastleigh, South Brent and Ugborough. She also works part time for DNPA and has worked for the authority for 10 years. Their roles are varied and include maintaining the Public Rights of Way network, liaising with local farmers and landowners, looking after popular sites, leading guided walks, assisting and educating the public, providing activities for schools and other volunteer groups, working with emergency services, working closely with the Parish Councils and running our own Ranger Ralph club events for 5-12 year olds. Ella and Andrea are also assisted by voluntary wardens who live locally to Ivybridge and spend a considerable amount of their time walking the rights of way and keeping an eye on this corner of Dartmoor. Recent projects in the Ivybridge area have included the boardwalk by the river Erme, clearing the permissive path between Henlake and Hanger Down, the resurfacing and drainage works on Stowford lane (Two Moors Way) and path upgrades including improving access and surfacing on the footpath above Moorhaven. Projects planned for the summer include more upgrading of the rights of way network in Longtimber woods and the continual clearance of the local rights of way network.

Much Ado About Nothing

Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council

AND

THE NICK CUMMINS COMMUNITY GROUP OF THE YEAR AWARD 2014 Ivybridge Town Council is once again delighted to announce that it is seeking nominations for The David Britton Citizen of the Year Award 2014. This year it has also added a new category in memory of the late Nick Cummins, who sadly passed away recently and which will be named The Nick Cummins Community Group of the Year Award. Mr Cummins was the ambassador for Manstow Football Club for many years and was himself Citizen of the Year and will be sadly missed. These prestigious awards are for individuals and groups and will be given to those whom the Council feel have provided an invaluable input into the community and have made a difference through their involvement in the town. Mayor, Cllr Karen Pringle, said: “There are many unsung heroes who work away, often behind the scenes, but who are making an impact on the community. The Council urges people to think who would be worthy recipients of the Citizens Award and the Community Group of the Year Award.” Criteria The criteria includes those individuals and groups who solely volunteer within the community and as in previous years the award does cover people living outside the town although they must have provided a service valued by people in Ivybridge. It was decided to add the new category of “group” for 2014 as it is often leaders of groups who win the award of Citizen of the Year, when they acknowledge that they are the figurehead representing many others in the team who contribute to the success. Last year, the award was given to Mrs Caroline Hodgson in recognition of the broad range of community activities with which she is involved either as a member or local leader, thereby making an outstanding contribution to life in Ivybridge. How to nominate a person or group If you know of any person or group please write to Ivybridge Town Council, Erme Court, Leonards Road, Ivybridge, PL21 0SZ (or email the information to susanhocking@ivybridge.gov.uk) giving details of their name, address and reasons why they should be put forward to receive such an award and also include your own name and address. The nominations will be considered by the Town Council in October and the winners will receive a presentation from the Mayor towards the end of the year. Closing date All entries must be received by Monday 22nd September 2014. CONTACT THE TOWN COUNCIL

Stowford School’s boys swimming squad tested their ability against the top 24 primary schools in the country at the National Swimming Championship for Primary Schools, held at the International Sports Centre in Sheffield. The boys’ journey to the championship started at the beginning of March at the Devonport Royal Swimming Association (DRSA) School Gala, which they won for the third consecutive year. Qualification for the nationals was won at the English Schools’ Swimming Association (ESSA) South West Division, Primary Schools Relay

Gala at Millfield, where, despite it being the first-ever attempt by Stowford teams at this level, the boys finished third in South West in the 4 x 25m freestyle relay against stiff competition from many prestigious schools. The boys’ experience included a parade of team captains and a presentation of ESSA badges, before their event, the 100m freestyle relay. The team qualified for the final with a team best time of 1:01:48, and another great performance in the final saw them placed eighth overall in the whole country.

MUSICAL MEMORIES

a

Year 6 children at Woodlands Park Primary School recounted their time at the school by performing numbers from three famous musicals to represent each stage of their school journey. They deftly wove together memories from reception and key stage one, years three and four and years five and six with performances

to represent the different phases of their primary school career: The Lion King (the early years), Matilda (the middle years) and Hairspray (the final years). The result was an incredible performance full of emotion and energy, which was greeted with a rapturous reception from an audience packed with family and friends.

Olympic star visits Manor

Children and staff at Manor were inspired by the story of Olympic Judo Bronze medallist Karina Bryant, who recently visited the school. Karina made time for all the children during the day and allowed them the unique experience of handling her Bronze medal during a photoshoot. They were also treated to a Judo display with both young and old getting involved. Karina’s inspiring story really gripped the children and sent home a powerful message to all of them on the importance of never giving up!

The Rocky Monster Show Stowford’s Year 6 children always face a challengeto produce a show at the end of the year that will amaze staff, children, parents, friends and family. Every year they “pull it off” in style and 2014 did not disappoint! This year they chose The Rocky Monster Show, which is a children’s take on the Rocky Horror Show. It was an exciting musical that provided a real challenge for the children, both on a musical and performance front, but the final result was definitely impressive. Year 6 teacher Matt Jackson said: “Every year we

strive to give the children an opportunity to showcase their talents and this year they have surpassed our expectations. “They have injected humour and used the production as a vehicle to highlight their singing ability, as well as their seemingly endlessly capacity to entertain. “As always, they have amazed and delighted us with their commitment and dedication and we hope the parents will get the same amount of pleasure from their performance as Miss Ellard and I did in supporting them in creating a polished performance.” August 2014 The Ivybridge magazine

school

Jasmine Maslen and Jake Batten

AS PART OF their work on investigating the plants and animals found in a river habitat, Year 4 children from Stowford walked down to Longtimber Woods to find out more about the River Erme. They started their walk at the viewing point near the Ivy Bridge and then followed the

course of the river up through the woods, thinking about how the width, speed and depth of the river changed and looking for plants and animals that were thriving in the woodland environment. Along the way they made notes and sketches that they could develop further in school.

Geography Young apprentices This summer term, year five and six children at Woodlands Park Primary School have been involved in a challenge called ‘The Young Apprentice’, after the TV show of the same name. They worked in teams to design a scone-based snack to sell in the playground in the aim of making as much profit as possible. The task involved the children in designing snack ideas and surveying their target market, costing their snack ideas using supermarket websites and finally preparing and selling their chosen snack. The project was a great opportunity for the children to use complex maths skills, cookery skills and team-working, which they did in some style. 24

A FISHY END OF TERM TREAT Stowford pupils saved up their rewards for good behaviour to earn a “crystal treat” and Curlews Class had an unusual request for their final treat of the year. Following their biology topic work earlier in the term, they wanted to “dissect something.” Luckily, Jim Portus from South Western Fish Producer Organisation Ltd (SWFPO Ltd) was able to help out! SWFPO Ltd, which serves the needs of fishing communities from Brixham to the South West coast of Scotland, is based in Ivybridge and Jim and his colleague Karen Pringle offered to bring along some fish for the children to investigate. The fish, freshly caught that morning, included dab, monkfish and gurnard. The children worked in groups of three to dissect and fillet the fish, drawing the various parts as they worked.

The Ivybridge magazine August 2014

Stowford pupils have had the opportunity to develop their geography knowledge during visits from Ivybridge Community College teacher Dr White. Dr White spent time with both Year 6 classes working on their mapping and compass skills, using both historical and current maps of Ivybridge and practical work on the school field to enhance their understanding. He then found time to visit the Year 4 classes and encouraged them to think about how rivers change in size, altitude and speed on their journey to the sea, enabling them to think more deeply about the plants and animals that are found at different stages along the river. Headteacher Helen Tipping, said: “We are incredibly lucky that the teachers at ICC are so supportive of our pupils. Not only do these links help the children to make the transition from Primary to Secondary school more easily, but they also create unique and enriching learning opportunities.”

Young cricketers from eight primary schools competed in the Ivybridge Learning Community cricket tournament held at Ivybridge Cricket Club’s Filham Park ground. The keenly contested competition saw the mixed teams produce some good cricket and absorbing contests. After a round-robin series of matches in two divisions, each school faced the team which finished in the corresponding position in the other division to determine the final standings. The top two teams, Manor A and

Woodlands, could not be separated even after the final round of matches, with their head-to-head game finishing all square, which means they will share the trophy. The best batsmen award went to Ben Privett, from Ugborough, and the best bowler was Abigail Northmoor, from Manor.

Stowford football squad saved their best performance until the very end of the season, securing a win in the final of the Primary Schools Tournament at ICC. Stowford went into the competition knowing that they had secured second place overall in the league and this was their last opportunity to bring back some silverware. Two good wins against Manor B and Yealmpton saw them through the pool stages and a win against Woodlands left them with Manor A to face. In a great game, Manor had the edge and secured a 1-0 victory, but Stowford had done enough to book a place in the final. They again faced Manor A, but this time it was Stowford who found the edge, their 1-0 victory leaving them as overall winners. facebook.com/theivybridgemagazine

Woodlands Park Primary School sports day took place in the glorious weather. All the children participated in a carousel of activities and some races. They demonstrated great team spirit encouraging their team to achieve their best. The winning team for Foundation & Key Stage 1 were ‘Green Apples’ and for Key Stage 2 ‘Purple Butterflies’.

It was an incredibly busy half-term for sport at Manor Primary, with some notable wins and successes. The Football ‘A’ Team won the local schools’ league, winning all eight of their league fixtures over the course of the season, and also the South Hams Tournament. In athletics, Manor finished 3rd out of the 20 teams in the Area Athletics Competition held at Brickfields, with winners in a number of events. In the local schools’ Cricket Tournament (see above), Manor were joint winners and the children were thrilled to return to school having retained the Championship Trophy (pictured). What is physiotherapy? By Nikki Smith, mcSp South hams physio

physiotherapy helps restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability through movement and exercise, manual therapy, education and advice. physiotherapists maintain the health of people of all ages, helping people to manage pain and prevent disease. physiotherapy is a science-based profession and takes a ‘whole person’ or ‘holistic’ approach to health and wellbeing, which includes the patient’s general lifestyle. at the core is the patient’s involvement in their own care, through education, awareness, empowerment and participation in their treatment. you can benefit from physiotherapy at any time in your life. it helps with conditions such as back pain or sudden injury, managing long-term medical conditions such as Stroke or parkinson’s disease, and in preparing for sporting events or preventative treatment. ANY QUESTIONS? do you have a physiotherapy question or query? the expert team at South hams physio is happy to answer reader questions – all you have to do is send them to the ivybridge magazine (see page 3 for contact details) and each month one of these will be answered with physiotherapy tips to follow. SPEEDY HOUMOUS

By leaNNe taNcock Slimming World consultant

When it comes to eating healthily, many people find their biggest challenge comes with keeping hunger at bay between meals. However, a weight-loss expert from Ivybridge says satisfying a snack attack needn’t send your weight-loss journey off track. Leanne Tancock, who runs a Slimming World group in Ivybridge, says people are mistaken in thinking that snacking itself is bad for the waistline – it’s what we choose to tuck into that matters. “Getting the nibbles is perfectly normal. Whether you get peckish mid-morning, your energy levels start to drop in the afternoon, or you crave a suppertime snack in the evening, the key is to plan ahead and have healthy snacks to hand.” Thanks to a new recipe book full of healthy snacks, Slimming World members will now find it even easier to stay on track all day long. The new Little Book of Light Bites, which comes in a handy handbag size and is available now from the Ivybridge Slimming World group, features more than 60 healthy snacks to keep slimmers going when they feel the urge to munch. From meaty marvels to veggie stars and delicious dips to sweet savers, many of the bite-sized food ideas need no cooking at all and can be ready in minutes.

Grey, grey go away By doNNa reyNoldS revelations hair Studio

It is a problem shared by many of our clients at Revelations – the dreaded grey hairs and what to do about them. Those lucky enough not to get them will not understand the utter frustration when, within a fortnight of having your colour touched up, you look in the mirror and appear to resemble a racoon! So what can be done? If you are not ready to go completely grey, but want to manage your roots better, the good news is that you have options. As we get older, our skin changes colour and quite often shades of colour that used to suit us

ready in 10 minutes

Next time a snack attack strikes, have this delicious dip and lots of vegetable crudités to hand: • 400g can chickpeas, drained • 1 garlic clove, crushed • 2 tbsp lemon juice, plus extra to taste • 2 tbsp fat free natural Greek yogurt • Salt and freshly ground black pepper • pinch of smoked paprika or cayenne pepper (optional) put the chickpeas, garlic, lemon juice and yogurt into a food processor and pulse until fairly smooth. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper, add more lemon juice to taste and sprinkle with smoked paprika or cayenne pepper if you want a bit of extra spice. keep in the fridge for up to three days. Spread on a crispbread or served with sticks of carrot, celery, pepper and cucumber.

All of the light bites have been created to work with Slimming World’s food optimising healthy eating plan, which is based on the science of energy density and satiety, meaning slimmers can fill up on healthy, everyday foods that are low in calories yet satisfying. “The beauty of Slimming World’s plan is that our members never have to feel hungry, even between meals,” says Leanne. Slimming World meet at Chapel Place Mondays 5.30pm & 7.30pm and Tuesdays 9.30am, 11.30am & 5.30pm 01752 892181 / www.slimmingworld.com

no longer do. Therefore, it’s important to get the shade that suits your skin tone, and a few lighter highlights can compliment your skin tone and ensure your grey roots are less noticeable. Go grey gracefully Grey can be stunning – look at some of our gorgeous celebrities who have embraced their grey, such as Helen Mirren and Judy Dench. The easiest way to subtly embrace your grey is to lighten up your colour so much so that as your grey roots come through they are a lot less visible and you grow your colour out from here. Or funk up your grey by adding foiled highlights, or lowlights, or for those feeling gutsy, some bright flashes! Revelations Hair Salon 27 Glanvilles Mill / 01752 69863

YOUNGSTERS ENJOY ‘ZANY’ WEEKEND Sixteen young people and three youth leaders from local youth charity Ivybridge Youth For Christ headed to Whitemoor Lakes, Lichfield, at the beginning of July for a weekend of zany challenges in ‘The Gauntlet’, outdoor activities such as zip wire and high ropes and roadshows challenging them to think about their

‘identity’ and ‘faith’. The fantastic time the young people had was demonstrated in their comments, which included “amazing, made new friends”, and “loved it, funny playing pranks”. To find out more about the charity or groups young people can access, please call Elis Norton on 07966 911560.

Byte back – cyber-bullying

A

ccording to a recent survey, 20,000 people were investigated for cyber-bullying in the last three years. However, there are likely to be a great deal more unreported cases in the workplace.

How could employers be liable for cyber-bullying? There are requirements under the Health & Safety legislation for the employer to provide a safe place of work. Cyber-bullying could compromise a safe workplace resulting in a personal injury claim. Under the Protection from Harassment Act 1997, employers

28

can be vicariously liable for the acts of one of their employees in bullying another online. Employers could face claims of constructive dismissal if an employee’s grievance against a cyber-bully is not dealt with. If cyber-bullying relates to a protected characteristic under the Equality Act 2010 (i.e. age, sex, race, disability, sexual orientation, religion or belief, etc) then it may amount to harassment and a claim of unlawful discrimination even if the victim does not hold that characteristic. Recent case law has shown that the law in this area can have a

The Ivybridge magazine August 2014

wider application with consequences for employers. In one case, two employees of the Carphone Warehouse obtained the mobile phone of their manager and updated his Facebook status to read: “Finally came out of the closet. I am gay and proud”. Even though the manager was not gay the manager successfully brought a claim against the company. How can employers defend themselves? Employers need well thought out, transparent and fair policies on social media, bullying and harassment. They should be

by Dominic Tucker, of Howard & Over Solicitors tailored to the specific organisation and working environment. Training should be provided on the policies. If there is a proven breach then the employer should act in a proportionate and consistent manner. If in doubt seek legal advice.

Top class service for Mike

When it comes to life’s accomplishments, Mike Ford has ticked many boxes. He was a company director in the 1990s and in the early 2000s, helped form a successful printing company. He has managed village football teams for over 40 years. Mike helps (and has organised charity events) at the Merlin MS Centre, Hewas Water, near St Austell which has helped him change the quality of his life with MS. He’s writing a book on the village where he lived for the first 22 years of his life, with profits going to the Centre. But when looking ahead, Mike has turned to Richardsons Legal Services. Because of Mike’s MS, it was important that his family’s future would be looked after. “I was put in touch with David by my financial advisor Paul Clahane of Saltash to set up Wills for myself and my wife Janet , and a Family Trust to protect our property from all unforeseen eventualities. “I initially went with my wife,

Mike Ford – delighted with the service

Janet, to see David for a twohour meeting – there would be two more two-hour meetings following this one – all of them would help to set up the Trust and explain the process in detail.” Richardsons Legal Services has put Mike’s and Janet’s home into Trust. No probate is needed for a property in Trust (which would otherwise mean a lengthy and costly process to complete), ensuring that it’s easier for their beneficiaries.

facebook.com/theivybridgemagazine

twitter.com/ivybridgemag

In addition, Mike and Janet took out Lasting Powers of Attorney, which means that they are legally authorised to make decisions for each other if either loses their mental faculties in the event of an accident or illness. “The Trust David has set up is a true Family Trust as it will last 125 years and be of benefit to my children and future generations. We came away very satisfied with what David had done. “David is also providing a free legal advice clinic for members of the MS Society in St Austell,” added Mike. “The problem is that people with MS may not have enough money to pay for this, so this is a very important aspect of what David does. “David is both very experienced in legal issues and his demeanour is very friendly and easy going,” concluded Mike. “He answers your every question clearly. He has done a superb job. David deals with people very well and offers a top class service which is incredibly professional.”

SUMMER FUN AT HANNAHS’ FAYRE

Hundreds of local visitors enjoyed a day out in the sunshine at Hannahs Summer Fayre. A key part of Hannahs fundraising calendar, the event raised over £2,600. Dog owners enjoyed the ever-popular family dog show and Hannahs Hounds showed off their dog agility skills. There was also a dramatic performance by a group of Taiko drummers as well as live music. As well as plenty of outdoor activities and games, there was a fantastic variety of local stalls for the whole family to enjoy.

A DAY AT THE RACES! Eight members of Ivybridge Probus Club and six spouses enjoyed a day at the races, with everyone coming home a few pounds better off. Foliage manipulation Nicky Heal returned to demonstrate at Ivybridge Flower Club at the July meeting and showed his audience the art of foliage manipulation. Nicky, who owns a florists in Taunton and lives on a farm, produced a basket, two hats, a swan, a couple of sheep and some snails, together with a giant poppy seed head, all made from plaited New Zealand flax leaves, plaited palms or willow. He had constructed all his containers, except one, and used carefully chosen flowers, in very differing colour schemes and designs. Chairman Janet Weston reminded members that more members will be needed for the committee and asked them to consider standing. The club breaks for the summer and next meets on Tuesday, 9 September, when Chris Kollen, a florist from Totnes, uses as his title ‘Late summer party’. BATTERSHILL WINS ENGLISH SCHOOLS’ TITLE l athletics

SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD Erme Valley Harriers athlete Will Battershill stormed to gold in the intermediate boys’ 1500m steeplechase at the English Schools’ Championships. The Ivybridge Community College student led the field home at the Alexander Stadium, in Birmingham, in a time of 4.18.38. Fellow club athlete and student Carie Robertson was 3rd in the senior girls’ 400m hurdles final, the 17-year-old athlete adding to Devon’s medal haul in a highly competitive race, clocking a time of 61.76 seconds. A few weeks earlier, young athlete Sam Trigg, competing on the same track in the Sainsbury’s British Championship, came a respectable 8th in the triple jump with a distance of 15.07m. Three Harriers have spent a lot of time on their feet recently. Sarah Hirons ran 69 miles at the Hadrians Wall race, Emma Lake covered 32 miles at the Dartmoor Discovery and Paddy Trinder

travelled to Norway to complete in ‘Ironman’. Hirons’ race, which covered 34 miles on road, 17 miles tarmac paths and 18 miles on trails, started within the walls of Carlisle Castle and finished in Gateshead. The race was split over two days, with an overnight camp stop, and followed Hadrian’s Wall. Emma Lake’s run across Dartmoor was as demanding, with Lake never having run above the marathon distance previously. Over a very hilly, but extremely picturesque course, Lake finished the 32 miles in a time of 4 hrs 43 minutes. Paddy Trinder went to Haugesund in Norway and successfully completed the Ironman 7.3, which comprised a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike ride, followed by a half marathon. Trinder finished the course in 5 hrs 23 minutes. Meanwhile, the Harriers held their own popular relays run over a 2.5 mile single lap course starting and finishing at Ivybridge Rugby Club. Despite a very wet evening, there was a record entry of 94

Will Battershill

teams. The Harriers’ ladies team broke the event record, while the Vet Men 40 took 1st place. The Harriers also had the fastest lady and man – Alison McEwing (14.43) and Will Battershill (12.32). There was a great evening for the club at the Plymouth Armada 10k, with 15-year-old Owen Parkin finishing 2nd, Matt Brown 3rd and Christian Cutcliffe 5th. The three athletes were also 1st male team. Cleo Andrews had a great run to be 2nd lady and 1st fv40.

BEST-EVER BOWLING FIGURES WRITE DeSILVA INTO RECORD BOOKS l cricket

IVYBRIDGE ALL-ROUNDER Jeewan DeSilva rewrote the Devon League record books in the win against Stoke Gabriel. His figures of 8.5 overs – 5 maidens – 9 wickets for 6 runs were the best-ever recorded in the Devon League B Division. All his victims were bowled and Jeewan also took the catch for the other wicket that fell to James Bullock. The win has kept the 1st XI in contention for promotion. They lie third in the table, behind Tavistock and Bideford, who they both still have to play in August. A run of three consecutive wins for the 2nd XI sees them currently head their league ahead of Torquay.

34

Ivybridge under 9s returned victorious from a Plymouth Kwik Cricket tournament held at Plymstock CC. England ladies test player and ashes hero Heather Knight presented the proud boys with the trophy!

Remembering the fallen

Before the home game with Tavistock on Saturday, 2 August, the club will be remembering the fallen on the 100th year anniversary of the outbreak of WWI. The Ivybridge branch of the Royal British Legion will be the club’s guest of honour. The day will also include the vice president’s tea and the official opening of the new clubhouse extension. Visitors and spectators will be very welcome.
