Market’s new opening times Ivybridge Country Market is introducing new opening hours from this month. Beginning on Friday, 7th August, the market, which takes place in the Scout hut next to the leisure centre, will trade from 9.30am until 11.30am every Friday.

GENEROUS DONATION TO GROUP An Ivybridge charity which helps adults with learning difficulties was the chosen charity of this year’s Ladies’ Festival Weekend. Stairways was founded in 2005 by three volunteers in response to cuts in funding for facilities for literacy and numeracy for adults with learning difficulties over the age of 18 years. In the aftermath of the tragic Nepal earthquake, the Rotary Club of Ivybridge’s Dr Paul Fletcher orchestrated an immediate response to raise funds for Shelterbox. To date, the club has raised £15,000, a figure which is still going up, and exceeded its target of 20 Shelterboxes. The club was grateful to Tesco at Lee Mill who allowed them to raise awareness and collect, and they received further individual donations which has contributed to the substantial total. î To find out more, email adrian.dcunha@virgin.net or like them on Facebook. Learning programme for local groups South Hams Community and Voluntary Services (CVS) has launched its latest learning programme for local voluntary and community groups. The CVS offers support and advice to community groups and charities operating in the South Hams, including workshops to help groups gain the skills they need. Forthcoming workshops include monitoring your organisation’s impact on 17th September, from 1-4pm; Basic fundraising techniques on 30th September, from 10am-12pm; trustees roles and responsibilities on 12th November from 9.30am-12.30pm; and volunteers and the law on 2nd December from 9.30am-12.30pm. The workshops are open to representatives from any not-forprofit community group or organisation operating in the area and their cost ranges from £10-15 per person. Clothes mountain raises money for Nepal

Ivybridge Rainbow and Brownie units got together for a family picnic recently along with their parents, some grandparents, brothers and sisters. Everyone was invited to bring along clothes they no longer needed to make a ‘Mount Everest’, with the donated clothes being taken to be converted into money. As a result, the units were able to send a cheque for £50 to the Nepal Earthquake Appeal. Soldiers of the 10th King’s Own in the South Hams, 1915

ugust 1915. The war had been going on for exactly one year. During this time, the 10th Battalion, the King’s Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment – King’s Own for short – had come to the South Hams, and gone again. The 10th King’s Own was based in Devon from the outbreak of war until the summer of 1915, and a special relationship of sorts seems to have developed between the local people and this battalion from the north of England. The band of the 10th King’s Own must have been a particularly good one, for the local newspaper, the Gazette, reported that it contained no less than nine members of the wellknown Besses o’ th’ Barn brass band from Whitefield (now Greater Manchester). Does the time in Devon help explain the story of Sergeant William Dillon? Sergeant Dillon served with the 8th Battalion, King’s Own. He was born in Bolton, enlisted in Manchester and was killed in action 26th September 1917. Sergeant Dillon is commemorated on the war memorial in Modbury though his connection with Modbury is unknown. Perhaps he had been ‘adopted’ by a Modbury couple whose own son was serving overseas. Or does some romantic liaison explain this connection? We shall probably

never know. Lieutenant Horace Heptonstall Backhouse from Ermington was commissioned into the 10th Battalion of the King’s Own on 10th June 1915. He was a member of the Erme Freemasons’ Lodge and the son of George Backhouse, the landlord of the New Inn, Ermington.Was it a coincidence that Backhouse was commissioned into the battalion that had been on his doorstep for the previous eight or nine months? Officers were drawn from all over, often from public schools and university Officer Training Corps. There was also local commissioning into the battalions; men were encouraged to join this ‘foreign’ battalion which had suddenly become local to them. This may well have been the case for Backhouse. He may have come across officers of the 10th King’s Own and was encouraged by them to join up alongside them. Lieutenant Backhouse was later awarded the Military Cross for leading a trench raid on 7th June, 1917 in which he was wounded. The citation in the London Gazette reads: “For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During a daylight raid on enemy trenches he successfully led his platoon into the enemy second line, subsequently bringing back his whole company with one officer and 60 prisoners”.

Appeal for horse loving volunteers

Erme Valley Riding for the Disabled is looking for willing volunteers who love horses, love helping people and would like to learn new skills to join them. Founded more than 30 years ago, Erme Valley RDA supports 120 disabled riders and their families, and is staffed entirely by volunteers. In addition to the benefits of riding, they provide 10 work experience placements, and have created the right environment for young adults with a mental health problem to flourish. Riding enables young adults to cope with their disability, helping them feel more comfortable in everyday life, while giving equine companionship and inclusion by giving them the chance to make new friends and be part of a team. Consultation on plan closes this month

Various developments are planned for Ivybridge that could see hundreds of new houses built and the Stowford Mill site re-developed. To help shape the way the town develops, Ivybridge has embarked on writing a Neighbourhood Plan, which is now out for community consultation. The plan can be viewed on the town council website www.ivybridge.gov.uk/local-information/neighbourhood-plan - and there is an online survey to complete. The consultation period closes on Friday, 21st August, 2015.

WILL YOU WORK OUT WHODUNNIT? The ‘swinging 60s’ came to The Watermark when a murder mystery event was enjoyed by over 30 guests. ‘A Shot in the Dark’ had everyone guessing and some clever sleuths eventually solved the murder and won some prizes. Cards on the Table by the ‘Queen of Crime’ Agatha Christie, is being staged by Ivybridge Theatre Company this month at The Watermark on Friday 14th and Saturday 15th August, at 7.30pm. The play is a typical ‘whodunnit’: the scene is set with Mr Shaitana, a rather strange and wealthy collector of objets d’art, hosting a dinner party for six people. A murder is committed of course but there are many red herrings and skeletons in the cupboard before the Superintendent can lay his “cards on the table”! world and Marilyn took aspects of the tale and interpreted them in unusual floral designs. The story ended with the inevitable outcome – it was a fraudulent scam and her friend lost a lot of money! There was obviously more than one lesson to be learned at club this month. The club do not have a meeting in August, but when members convene after the summer break at the club’s next meeting, on Monday, 14th September, at The Watermark, Denise Stephens will be the demonstrator and her title will be ‘flower power’. MANY LESSONS IN FLOWER STORY Members of Ivybridge Flower Club were asked a question by Marilyn Prout, an area demonstrator and freelance florist from South Molton, at their July meeting: “Would you believe it?”. Marilyn told the story of a recently widowed friend of hers who became embroiled with a man who befriended her on Facebook. The story became very involved, with the man friend having to travel all over the 6

ENLIGHTENING STORY OF LOCAL INTEREST A group of Ivybridge Probus Club members, wives and guests enjoyed the July meeting at Newton Abbot Races. On a warmish sunny day, lunch in the Paddock Restaurant, seven races to look forward to and a

chance to fleece the Turf Accounts was the day’s agenda. As well as personal wagers each couple, on respective races, took it in turns to use a kitty with aspirations of wealth creation beyond belief; or a “fiver” at least! The system worked well with an outright winner on the first race. Unfortunately, it drifted from that point on, with the bookies winning by a head at the finishing post!

The club’s July meeting was chaired by chairman Michael Bailey, ably assisted by Speaker Secretary Howard Webster. Forthcoming events were announced after lunch, including the ladies’ Christmas lunch at St Elizabeth House, Plympton, in early December, a golf day at Wranagton in mid autumn, a quiz night in late August and a late September weekend in Paris. On a more somber note, the chairman passed on to members thanks from Ann Anderson, widow of Peter Anderson who recently succumbed after a long illness. The club made a donation to the charity of the families choice. Business over, Howard introduced Tom Madock to speak on ‘A Royal Marine in the Crimea War in the mid 19th century’. Tom’s family can be traced back nine generations in and around Ivybridge. Nicholas Scobell, who was to become his Great-Great Grandfather started at an early age to became a farm labourer. Seeing no future he decided to join the Royal Marines in 1846. Having no money he walked from Ivybridge to Stonehouse Barracks in Plymouth. A fully trained Royal Marine, Scobel was sent out to Sebastapol on the Crimea Peninsular. At 5am he was the first Marine ashore for what was to become the Battle of Balaclava. Along with his battalion comrades he was part of what was to be known as ‘The Thin Red Line’. Outnumbered, they held the wrath of Russian Cossacks at bay and into eventual retreat. It was at this battle that the infamous Charge of The Light Brigade took place. Later in his Royal Marine career he was involved with the suppression of the West African slave trade. He left military service with a “Good Behavior” citation and a Service Pension in 1864. He married Mary Jane Winsor and settled down to farming until his death in 1904 aged 81. FUN FOR ALL AT CORNWOOD SHOW A fantastic day for the whole family is in store at this year’s Cornwood Show on Saturday, 8th August. The Cornwood Agricultural and Horticultural Show, to give it its full title, is at the Blachford Estate in Cornwood, and aims to provide something for everyone and this year is no exception. There will be the traditional dog show, pets and poultry, the horticultural marquee and sheep show, to watch or take part in. Entry forms and details of all classes are in the Schedule, which can be picked up from various outlets around Cornwood and Ivybridge or go to the website www.cornwoodshow.btck.co.uk. As well as the classes, there is a varied programme of entertainment in the main ring including Pony Club games, flyball, classic cars and, back by popular demand, the amazing Duck Herding spectacle.

What’s On in August There will be plenty of things to try out, too, such as the rodeo sheep, bouncy castles and face painting for the children, and why not take part in the hilarious family races or Tug O’War competition. The Community Market is bigger and better this year giving more opportunity to buy locally-made handicraft, art and food. If you are feeling peckish, you'll be spoilt for choice with a range of locally-produced hot food, a bar, icecreams, candyfloss, coffee and cake and other refreshments. TEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC Take your teddy to meet the donkeys at Ivybridge Donkey Centre at its summer Teddy Bears’ picnic on Thursday, 13th August. Entertain the children this August There is something for children of all ages to beat the boredom during the summer break. Family cinema will be running throughout August with films every Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10.30am, see listings or website for full details. Nicky Kemp will be here with Animal Alphabet on 28 & 29 August, 2pm, bringing 60 minutes of learning, laughing and joining in. Created by Richard Digance, Animal Alphabet started life as a BBC series of six programmes. It’s

just a lot of great stories to tell in rhyme, fun educational and fully interactive with all the audience. On 21 August, at 7pm, there is the greatly anticipated return of The Pantaloons. Following their splendid rendition of Bleak House in March, they return to The Watermark with their own unique interpretation of Treasure Island, great for all the family, young and old.

Ben Waters The man with lightning fingers is back!. On 26 September the talented Ben Waters returns to The Watermark, this time with his Hoedown Band. Ben’s name has become synonymous with excellent musicianship and performance. Jools Holland, in the Mail on Sunday (12/06/2011), described Ben as being one of his favourite 10 pianists in history and asked him to perform at his wedding. Ben is proud to count many of the legends of boogie woogie and rock ‘n roll his colleagues and friends, having played alongside Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, The Rolling Stones, Shakin’ Stevens, Procul Harum, Mick Hucknall, Ray Davies, Jools Holland, and many others. All the hard work and dedicated training paid off for the Erme Primary School Junior Tens Tors team when they completed the Junior Ten Tors challenge in June. The year 6 children set off from Cadover Bridge at 8.30am on Friday, 19th June, and headed off to Legis Tor, their first of 10. The children successfully navigated 18 miles across the moor, visiting eight of the 10 tors before arriving at their campsite near Princetown, where they pitched their tents and helped prepare their evening meal. After a good night’s sleep, the team were off again early on Saturday morning, in thick fog, to complete the route. They arrived at their final tor, Leeden Tor, to find their parents waiting to cheer them over the finishing line.

As part of their ‘sun, sand and surf’ topic, the Year 5 and 6 children of Manor Primary enjoyed a fantastic day out at Bigbury. They spent time investigating the beach and coastline, identifying various features such as rock formation, coastal erosion and tide movement. They also linked the trip to a forthcoming Enterprise project by discussing the different ways in which people use the beach and the opportunities that exist for businesses to thrive. All this learning was followed by a surf lesson when many of the children managed to get on their feet on a surf board for the very first time. Stowford pupils saved up their rewards for good behaviour to earn a “crystal treat”, which Curlews Class decided should be an art session. Luckily, local artist James Walbank was happy to help out! James organised a printing session for the children, but one with a difference. The idea was to cre14

ate a layered printed piece of artwork, with the first layer being created by using parts of their body to print. The next layer allowed them to create shapes to print from and for the final layer he encouraged them to use their shapes in different and creative ways, such as using edges and creating patterns on the shapes.

Pupils at Woodlands Park Primary School enthusiastically took part in a range of activities during National School Sports Week. They took part in a 1km run (and have so far run the equivalent distance from Ivybridge to Cambridge), an assault course, orienteering course and played capture the flag. The school also held its sports day. All the children participated in a carousel of activities and some races. The house winners were: Foundation & Key Stage 1 – 1st: Purple Butterflies, 2nd: Black Cats and 3rd: Orange Sun; Key Stage 2 – 1st: Blue Water, 2nd: Orange Sun and 3rd: Black Cats.

DNPA Ranger Ella Briens reveals a great way to discover Dartmoor We have already had some really scorching summer days and many people have been making the most of the weather for a favourite Dartmoor pursuit – wild camping! Backpacking and sleeping wild on Dartmoor are great ways to explore the area and in many instances camping is acceptable - but it is really important to check that it is allowed where you are hoping to pitch up! This is because the land on Dartmoor is owned by a number of different landowners, some of which fall into different commons, therefore the same The guide to camping on Dartmoor rules do not apply to all areas! There are specific areas where you are not allowed to camp, eg on areas designated as sites of special scientific interest (SSSIs). To try and make it clearer and easier for campers to do the right thing, the national park authority has produced a map and leaflet, which can be viewed online at www.dartmoor.gov.uk - search for camping - or collected from one of our visitor centres, details of which are also on the website. This leaflet contains some basic information and also a map outlining areas that are suitable for camping. The last thing a camper wants is to be woken up by a Ranger telling them they are doing something wrong! Wild camping for up to two nights in the same place on the open land on Dartmoor is acceptable provided that you choose your spot sensibly: l Don’t pitch your tent on farmland l Don’t camp on moorland enclosed by walls l Don’t camp within 100 metres of a road l Don’t camp on flood plains l Don’t camp on archaeological sites l No open fires – use camping stoves l Take your litter home The leaflet also provides a list of camp sites, camping barns, bunk houses and Youth Hostels if you prefer somewhere with more facilities. The children in Year 6 at Woodlands Park Primary School performed a fantastic production to celebrate the end of their seven years at the school. In three groups, they performed Aladdin, Annie and Shrek, watched by parent and friends and culminated in a finale, sung by all of Year 6, ‘Bring on tomorrow’. Fun, laughter and tears were shared by all.

The Year 3 and 4 pupils of Manor Primary followed in the footsteps of the famous Victorian fossil collector Mary Anning when they visited Charmouth to find out more about rocks and fossils as part of their current Science topic ‘The World beneath My Feet’. After a talk about fossils and what they may find, the children went hunting for belemnites, ammonites and other strange and interesting rocks. The children carried on their research of fossils back in the classroom and also created wonderful chalk and charcoal sketches of fossils and accurate clay models of ammonites.

Children in Key Stage 2 at the Erme Primary School were challenged to create small worlds from natural materials for their KS2 project. The inspiration for the task was encouraged by the book ‘The Borrowers’, and everything had to be made with them in mind. All the children thoroughly enjoyed the nature making, which was delivered by artist Naomi Vincent.

Year 6 children at Stowford School brought their own twist to the classic musical “The Sound of Music” by introducing a “Back to the 80s” theme for their end of year production. As well as the classic songs from the well known musical, they used dance and 80s songs to retell the story of novice nun Maria taking on the regimented Von Trap children, falling in love with the Captain and hatching a daring plot to escape the Nazis. It was a challenge, but the end result impressed staff, pupils and parents. An all-day athletics-themed Sainsbury’s school sports day saw the children of Erme Primary School compete under their house colour teams and families. In the morning, the children were split into mixed aged house teams and had to visit a carousel of multi-skill activities. At each activity the children were contributing towards their house score by gaining points for their house colour. In the afternoon, there were class team races and more competitive races where medals were up for grabs! Some willing mums and dads bravely participated in the adult race, cheered on loudly by the children.

If so, you certainly won’t have been disappointed – from the first strains of the opening tune through to the well-deserved standing ovation it was an excellent show. Focussing on a variety of fairy tales from Cinderella to Rapunzel and everything in between, the story unfolds about the baker and his wife and their quest to have a child of their own. With witches, wolves, princes and fairies aplenty the entire cast gave their absolute best and confirmed once again the amount of talent at Ivybridge Community College. Burley-Brown brought the house down with their hilarious send up of the two princes, and Adam Northcott and Karabel HolmanLuck stole many a scene as the front and rear of Jack’s muchloved cow Milky-White. As is now the custom with ICC productions, the stage action was accompanied by a live musical score, outstandingly performed by the band. The different strands of the story were elegantly weaved together by narrator John Archer with his beautiful clear voice. While is was great to go Into The Woods, we are delighted we got out safely and that we will be able to return for what is sure to be another block buster next year.

Mortgage advice is vital If you are thinking of purchasing a buy-to-let property or considering additional borrowing against your home, it is important that you seek advice and guidance, writes Joslyn Montgomery-Peters.. A ‘second charge’ (additional borrowing) is so-called as it is a second mortgage and is second in priority to your main and first mortgage. Usually this loan is at a higher interest rate to the first mortgage as it carries a higher risk to the lender. It is a loan that is secured on your home with a different lender to your main mortgage. In effect you have two mortgages on your home. Although this may sound a little scary, depending on the reason for the additional lending it may be the most cost effective way to borrow the money. There are several reasons why a second charge may be beneficial for a client; since taking out their original mortgage their credit rating has declined or they have had financial difficulties, if there is a high redemption figure on their original mortgage and it would be too expensive to move, or if they have moved from employed to self employed and are unable to prove their income. It will be the mortgage adviser’s responsibility to compare the costs of either taking out a second charge or to re-mortgaging depending on the redemption charges, to ensure the client has the most costeffective way of rescheduling outstanding debts. Buy-to-let mortgages, introduced in 1996, are offered by an increasing number of lenders. Up to 18% of the homes in the UK are owned as an investment property. With the recent changes to the pension rulings it has also seen an increase with clients hoping to increase their pension income through rental income. Currently, buy-to-let mortgages are not regulated by the FCA, unlike residential mortgages. As the mortgages are for investment purposes and not for a home there are slightly different criteria to purchase the property. The mortgage can be arranged on an interest-only basis with the assumption that the property sale can clear the mortgage debt. Each lender has its own criteria which can be that the client earns a minimum annual wage, be a minimum age, until a maximum age, already be a residential home owner, been a property landlord in the past for a set period, have a minimum deposit or that the property is of a minimum size! This is not the full and extensive list and lenders can change their criteria. Generally, most lenders do like the applicant to be earning £25,000 per annum, have a 25% deposit and that the monthly rental income be 125% of the mortgage payment. This isn’t fixed and a client should not be deterred if their personal circumstances are different to the ones listed. Whilst buy-to-let properties can produce a monthly income, the recent budget announcement with regards to the tax relief being reduced over the next 5 years may reduce the profit historically received. I would advise first time property investors to talk though with an accountant how these changes, the additional income and the disposal costs (capital gains tax) will effect their current tax position. Why buy a funeral plan? It might sound like a gloomy subject, but more and more people are now buying a pre-paid funeral plan. Although they are called pre-paid funeral plans, they don’t have to be paid all in one go in advance because with most funeral plan providers you can pay a typical deposit, from about £200, and spread the remainder of the cost over a number of years. Most people are aware that the cost of a funeral is rising rapidly. Today, a funeral costs about £3,500 and it is estimated that in about eight years’ time a funeral will cost about £8,500 and still continue to rise. This is probably the biggest single reason why so many people are buying a funeral plan now because it is bought at today’s cost and no matter how long you live it will never go up. The money you pay always goes into a trust and is secure as it can only be used to pay funeral costs. Cost, however, is not the only consideration. Plans to turn the former swimming pool in Longtimber Woods into a barbecue area and stopping off place for walkers have been unveiled. As part of the project, a team of volunteer ‘friends’ is being sought to get involved, with Cllr Alan Spencer, chairman of the Parks Committee, likely to follow up those offers of help which were expressed when the idea was first proposed.

OUTSTANDING ALYSSA WINS TOP SPORTS AWARD Alyssa Oates, a year 12 student at Ivybridge Community College, won the Outstanding Performance in Community Sport award at this year’s Exeter Foundation Devon Sports Awards. Alyssa received her award from former Olympic swimmer Mark Foster at the award presentation at Exeter Chiefs’ Sandypark stadium. Alyssa represents Plymouth Underwater Hockey Club and will captain the Great Britain U19 women’s team at the World Championship taking place in Spain this month.

DINNATON EXCEL IN LEAGUE The culmination of several weeks’ competition in the Cornwall and West Devon league concluded with the final at the Life Centre, Plymouth on Sunday, 13th July. The team competition was Dinnaton’s return to the event after a three year absence. Competing against 14 other teams, from Torrington to Penzance, Dinnaton Swimming Club more than held its own against much bigger clubs, finishing 4th overall and 2nd team in Devon. Dinnaton Swimming Club is among the top competitive swimming clubs in the country, regularly achieving successes in local, regional and national competitions. From beginners’ lessons through to Masters sessions for adults, the family-orientated club provides the opportunity for families to learn to swim or improve their techniques together. A record number of teams – 105 – completed the course at this year’s Erme Valley Harriers Relays. The popular event sees each of the four athletes in a team run 2.5 miles over a single lap course. The Harriers were well represented with seven teams. The ladies team of Alison Thorn, Emma Lake, Cleo Perry and Alison McEwing were first female team; McEwing also ran the fastest female leg. The Harriers top team of Owen Parkin, Paddy Trinder, Allister Bristow and Andrew Perry were sixth overall. A popular entry in the race was Team Leo – which is a campaign to raise money for Muscular Dystrophy UK’s Fast Forward Campaign, which works for quick access to new medicines for children with Duchenne and other types of muscular dystrophy, and who entered 25 runners in the Ivybridge 10K – and the Harriers were pleased to do-

The Harriers also won the men’s and ladies’ team categories. At the Torbay Half Marathon there were several good performances, with Neil Holmes 19th overall in a time of 1.19.43 and 1st male vet 50. The Six Moor Miles was another popular event, with 13 Harriers completing the course. Allister Bristow was 2nd overall and 1st male vet 40, whilst Sarah Hirons was 2nd female.
