NEWS Victoria Park An Ivybridge teacher is celebrating double delight after winning two prestigious sporting awards. Ivybridge Community College head of performing arts Helen Reddy (pictured) picked up the Devon Sports Coach of the Year and Outstanding Contribution to Sport in Devon at the Devon Sports Awards. The highly-respected teacher, who runs Ivybridge Gymnastics Academy and is a high-performance coach at Honiton Gymnastics Club, was rewarded for her tireless work in the field of gymnastics. “It’s a real honour to be welcomed to collect an award in front of so many of your peers,” said Helen.
“National titles are never my primary goal – mass participation is – and our success is less about pushing elite performers and more about encouraging mass participation in gymnastics. “I believe strongly in the benefits that gymnastics delivers to students of all ages and abilities, so I encourage as many students – whatever their level of ability – to come along and have a go in our extra-curricular clubs, even if it’s only for 40 minutes per week,” Her recent successes include coaching and choreographing routines for the senior British Trio champions and Junior (13-19) Men’s 4 Champions.
Significant progress has been made on the new play area in Victoria Park. The playing surface and goals are being replaced, and the aim is that it will be ready for the new school term. On a less positive note, police are asking for any information people may have about the deliberate damage that was done to the young trees which have been recently planted.
Quiz night success The Friends of Ivybridge Library held a very successful quiz night in June. Twelve teams took part, helping the group raise nearly £300 in support of the Library.
Young footballers need your vote
NOMINATE YOUR LOCAL HEROES FOR TOP AWARD Nominations are being sought for two prestigious awards which recognise local heroes. Ivybridge Town Council is seeking suggestions for The David Britton Citizen of the Year Award and The Nick Cummins Community Group of the Year Award for 2017. The awards will be given to the individual and group whom the council feel have provided an invaluable input into the community and have made a difference through their involvement in the town.
There are many unsung heroes who work away, often behind the scenes, making an impact on the community. The council urges people to think who would be worthy recipients of the two awards. The criteria includes those who solely volunteer within the community and, as in previous years, the award does cover people living outside the town although they must have provided a service valued by people in Ivybridge. To nominate a person and/or group, write to Ivybridge Town
Council, Erme Court, Leonards Road, Ivybridge, PL21 0SZ or email the information to susanhocking@ivybridge.gov.uk giving full details of name/group, address and reasons why they should be put forward. Also include your own name and address. The nominations will be considered by the town council at its October meeting and the winners will receive a presentation from the mayor towards the end of the year. All entries must be received by Friday 13 October 2017.
Ugborough Football Club needs your vote after being selected as one of the local good causes in the latest round of the Tesco Bags of Help scheme. As a developing club, funds are much needed, so they are asking local residents to do their bit by collecting tokens from cashiers or at the self-scan tills at Tesco’s Lee Mill store and putting them in the Ugborough FC container within the foyer to give the club the best chance of winning the top prize. Voting is open until Thursday, 31st August, with the winners being announced at the end of September. The project with the highest number of votes will receive up to £4,000, the second placed project up to £2,000 and the third placed project £1,000.
CONTACT THE IVYBRIDGE MAGAZINE Two Ivybridge Rainbow groups have been raising money for Erme Valley Riding for the Disabled. Girls from the 1st and 5th Rainbows collected unwanted clothes, held cake sales and had ‘promise pots’ to collect rewards for being ‘kind and helpful’ at home. The two groups raised £138.55 and presented a cheque to Erme RDA on a visit to the centre. Rainbows are the youngest group in Girlguiding, for 5-7 year olds and meet either on a Tuesday or Thursday during term time.
The Bishop of Plymouth, the Rt Revd Nick McKinnel, visited Hannahs where he talked to the young people about life at Hannahs and the diverse activities they take part in. Following his visit, he said: “It is clearly an inspiring organisation and I have been telling everybody about it ever since”. Bishop Nick is pictured above with Dan Bradbury and Mary Watts.

NEWS Beetle drive Brownies
The Bowls Devon flag proudly flew over Ivybridge Bowls Club when a club side put up a great fight against a strong Devon side.
The local team, which included some ladies from other clubs in their section area, fought hard in a losing cause – Devon scored 118 shots, beating their opponents by 60 shots – but did finish with two winning rinks. Julie Kinchin, Shirley Williams,
Sheila Robertson and Ruth Hocking won 17 shots to 15. Lorraine Hawkes, Elizabeth Lightowlers, Sandie Kellaway and Vicky Hingston won 20 shots to 9. As well as being the County vice president, Vicky is also the well-

The girls were presented with a hostess badge at the end of the evening as a result of their organisation and excellent hostess skills. Another highlight of the term was the bushcraft and wilderness skills trip to Cotehele Estate, where the Brownies learnt to use knives safely to

STOWFORD SCHOOL CELEBRATES INSPECTORS’ REPORT Following a recent visit by government inspectors, Stowford school has been recognised as a good school which is on course “to the highest standards of teaching and pupil’s achievement”. Pupils, staff and governors at the school are celebrating a very positive inspection which recognised the school as “a vibrant place of learning” as well as developing both “academic standards that are above the average alongside pupils’ good personal development”. Inspectors commented on the rich and vibrant curriculum, the welcoming ethos and the strong development of the children’s deduction and discussion skills. Delighted headteacher Sue Williams said: “It is very rewarding to have the hard work of the staff, children and governors recognised by OFSTED and we will carry on developing our school so it will go from strength-to-strength”. To find out more about the school, visit its website stowford. devon.sch.uk. To arrange a visit, contact the school office on 01752 894163.

Laura died at the end of May after an eight-year battle with cancer The session raised money for CoppaFeel!, the breast cancer charity, for which Laura was an ambassador and tireless fundraiser.
Modbury ‘Ukes of Hazard’ ukulele band struck just the right chords at the recent afternoon tea in St John’s hall. While they played a varied repertoire of tunes, people enjoyed a sumptuous afternoon tea of dainty finger sandwiches, a selection of cakes, scones and tea. The event raised just over £200 to help maintain the Parish Church of Ivybridge.

Waste warning Do you know who is taking away your rubbish? South Hams District Council has launched a campaign to alert residents of what to look out for when hiring someone to collect waste. Residents have a duty of care to dispose of their waste responsibly, even when paying someone to take it away. Residents need to be aware of whether the waste carrier is registered and licensed. Visit southhams.gov. uk/wastecarriers and check whether the person or business being employed is registered. Last year, SHDC dealt with over 650 fly-tipping incidents, leaving the taxpayer with a clean-up bill of over £37,000. THE IVYBRIDGE MAGAZINE

THE CHARTER FOR TREES, WOODS AND PEOPLE
STUDENT THEATRE GROUP’S MESMERISING WEST END MUSICAL MEDLEY WOWS AUDIENCE The musical theatre group at Ivybridge Community College transported the audience to the West End in London with a mesmerising array of musicals for its ‘A Cabaret Variety Performance’. Photographic shop captures the changing face of town centre An Ivybridge business which celebrates its 30th anniversary this month can truly claim to have ‘captured’ the changing face of the town over the years. Photocare on Fore Street has changed a great deal over the three decades it has been in business, developing from its origins in processing camera films as technology, tastes and needs have changed. The business was started by Eric Salter in 1987 in a unit on Lee Mill Industrial Estate, offering photo processing to chemists etc. Gradually, more and more people began to call at the unit to ask to have films processed, so Eric opened a small shop, with a mini lab, at 22 Fore Street around 1991/2. The shop, still offering photo developing from film, moved into Glanvilles Mill in 1995, and just under a decade later, in 2004, moved to the current premises on Fore Street. Eric’s son, Tim, was working with him, delivering the printed photos across the local area, so it was a natural progression for Tim to take the reins of the business when his Eric retired in 2007.

Photocare on Fore Street and (inset) inside, circa 2004
Film developing had started to decrease, so Tim quickly identified that he needed to offer other services. “We have always offered photographic services, and still do today,” said Tim. “You can still get photos printed here, have your passport photo taken, buy a photo frame and so on. But I could see I had to offer more to
survive.” Over the years, this has included printing vehicle number plates (Photocare is a DVLA-registered manufacturer of legal registration plates), photo gifts and t-shirt printing, to name but a few. The business has also had to navigate changes in formats and the rise of digital. Tim offers video-to-DVD transfer, can put
slides on a disc and with the Kodak Instant Kiosk people can print digital photos direct from their device, memory card etc. Bringing toys back in town has been a major recent addition to what Tim offers. Introduced last November, the shop is the only place in Ivybridge to buy toys from pocket money prices to models and radio controlled vehicles. It has been so well received that Tim is currently revamping the shop so that he can better display what is on offer. Tim has deep roots in the town. He went to what was then Station Road School (now The Erme) and Manor before attending the community college. So he has seen personally as well as professionally how the town has changed over the years. “I have certainly seen the changing face of Ivybridge,” he says. “On the business side, the decline in footfall in the town is very noticeable. It used to be busy and bustling, but now not so. “But you have to adapt, so I am going to build on the toys, while continuing to offer all the photographic services.”

The Clay Factory Diaries THE PROCESS OF COMING INTO EXISTENCE As we gear up for what will be the final event of our ‘emergence’ month, it is fair to say that it has been an unbelievable month at The Clay Factory. We kicked things off with Meet Up & Mingle, an event for friends of The Clay Factory and RedPod Enterprises for a sneak peak at the building before emergence. We’ve been working extremely hard to finish the new work spaces and as we prepared to launch they were met with lots of enthusiasm from our guests. For those that haven’t been out to us yet, we have converted shipping containers and built funky work spaces that would be best described as like tree houses in the heart of the building. They are filling up fast and proving to be a worthy addition to the building. A late addition to emergence was RedPod food pop-up lunches. As the name suggests, the idea literally popped up out of nowhere and we had a week to get the information out to the public. It truly was a ‘build it and they will come moment’ and we were bowled over by how many people came to eat what is undoubtedly some of the finest cuisine in the county. The events were such a success that they look set to continue, so check our website and social media for more details. And then… well, then, we are left with the present. We are beavering away to set up the Devon Artist Exhibition and RedPod Arts Open Studios. By the time you read this it will have been and gone but I am sure it will have been a success as it genuinely seems there is a real appetite for this project in Ivybridge; we can’t express our gratitude enough to those who have supported us, not only during our emergence month, but from the moment we opened our doors. The Clay Factory has now well and truly emerged and we have even more exciting news to share with you next month, so stay tuned. For more information on The Clay Factory events, including RedPod food pop-up lunches, visit theclayfactory.co.uk or email info@theclayfactory.co.uk

FLOWER POWER
Phillip Dredge with his wife Gill at the Buckingham Palace garden party
Area demonstrator Angela Hyland, from St Austell, made a return visit to Ivybridge Flower Club for its July meeting, taking as her title “Flower Power”. Every design consisted of a mixture of garden and exotic flowers and foliage in different styles and varying containers. She also shared details of her visit to Highgrove (Prince Charles’ home) where she met Alan Titchmarsh. Also at the meeting, flowers were presented to a member who celebrates her Golden Wedding anniversary later in the month and tickets were again on sale for the garden meeting on 26th July. The club do not meet during August, so the next meeting will be held at The Watermark, on 11th September, starting at 7.30pm, when the demonstrator will be Susan Wills Pope, and her title is “sizzling September”. Visitors are welcome, £6. ¢ Details on club activities are available from chair Hilary Newcombe on 01752 892647
SHOW SUCCESS
Members of Ivybridge Theatre Company have not had much time to bask in the glow of standing ovations and rave reviews for their recent performances of Bedroom Farce at The Watermark. No sooner had the curtain closed and props been packed away than preparations began for its autumn production. Play readings are in full flow ready for performances in November (9th11th), again at The Watermark. The group’s next event is a 1920s murder mystery on Friday, 22nd September, in Rochelle’s Bar Bistro in Glanvilles Mill. Tickets are £25 to include two-course dinner and arrival drink. Booking is essential, so contact Jo on 01752 698576. ITC meet at Chapel Place, Fore Street, every Wednesday at 7.30pm. New members are welcome. ¢ Contact Ron Davis on 01752 893308 or visit ivybridgetheatre company.co.uk

Members of Ivybridge Probus Club have had a busy month. At the club’s July meeting guest speaker Prof. Bridgette Cusack, formerly of Edinburgh University, spoke about the ever-changing language which is English, highlighting the historical influences which have exerted themselves on the language – and the pronunciation – over the last 2,000 years. A party of members also visited Plymouth University Planetarium

led by Peter Brooks. Club members have been involved in two significant events. Firstly, Peter Brooks opened his garden to the public in aid of St Luke’s Hospice. Probus members helped in various roles, from traffic control to garden guides, at the enormously successful event, which raised over £2,000. Phillip Dredge, with his wife Gill, attended a garden party at Buckingham Palace. The club was thrilled for Phillip who, over the years, has put in so much time and effort for the benefit of ‘the town’. ¢ Contact secretary Bob Mailing on 01752 892255

SCHOOL REPORTS
The whole cast
The Lion King is a roaring success! Year 6 children at Stowford School brought the house down with their performances of ‘The Lion King’. Using the West End show script funded by the ‘Friends of Stowford School’, the children brought the dazzling show to life. Beautiful costumes, elegant dances and moving singing filled the school hall as a host of wonderful actors delighted friends and family. All the children decorated their
own costumes to represent the animals of the African plains and the headdresses of the main characters were simply stunning. There were magnificent group dances, phenomenal musical solos and uplifting ensemble numbers! The technical team had to produce the props and scenery, as well as mastering the lighting rig. clay pots inspired by the artist Barbara Hepworth. All of the children’s artworks, including their painted pebble homework projects, were arranged in the open air for parents and friends to admire.

Year 3 and 4 children at Manor Primary School have been creating wonderful artworks, inspired by their natural surroundings and the topic ‘the world beneath my feet’ on mountains, volcanoes, rocks and
fossils. All the children moulded, painted and glazed a clay ammonite sculpture and also drew a mountain scene with fabric crayons onto a linen square. They then sewed their picture onto a frame

SCHOOL REPORTS Presentation of books and (below) Sue Williams presenting scrolls
Thirty one youngsters graduated from Stowford Nursery at the end of the summer term. In a sunlit ceremony held on the music room decking, the children received scrolls and a book (Hullabaloo, Fairies, Vehicles, Nemo, to name a few) as a present from their keyworker. The children sang songs for their parents and grandparents and tossed their mortar boards high in the air with excitement. The children will be starting Stowford School in September. Year 3 and 4 children from Manor Primary School enjoyed great weather again for their family barbecue at Bigbury. Straight after school on 14th July, the year 3/4 teachers dashed down to Bigbury, ready to welcome Manor families and friends.
Mrs Babb fired up her barbecue so that parents could cook their own burgers and bangers on the beach, while the children swam in the sea, surfed on their body boards and dug a series of holes and tunnels in the sand to channel the incoming tide.
The children of Holbeton Primary School delivered an amazing performance for their end of year play Ali Baba and the Bongo Bandits. It was a spectacular feast of laughter, songs and eye-catching costumes. The play was directed under the watchful eye of Paula Curtis, with Mr White and Mrs Timothy appearing as a superb
cow. The year six children – Scarlet Purkis, Rosie Cumings, Agatha Garstang, Katie Meehan, Zak Norris, Kobi Prosho, Ben Edwards and Sonny Courtman – stood together to accept their standing ovation (above). It was another truly outstanding performance by the children of Holbeton Primary School.

Once a month, on a Sunday afternoon, some of the older residents of Ivybridge enjoy a lovely tea party and a social afternoon as guests in somebody’s home. Those who attend look forward enormously to their monthly treat and wouldn’t like to miss it. Contact the Elderly is a national organisation which changes the lives of people aged 75 and over who live alone and rarely get out on their own. But the lovely occasion depends on volunteers who would be willing, once a year, to host a tea party in their own home for about 8-10 guests. They also need more drivers who could take elderly people to and from a tea party in Ivybridge, with the commitment no more than once a month on a Sunday afternoon. They would also like to hear from older residents who would like to join them for a change of scenery, conversation and laughter and of course lots of tea and cake! Please get in touch with Christine, who would be delighted to hear from you and give you more details. Ring 01752 892460 or email treharne2@gmail.com

Carol bows out... Described by fellow trustees as the ‘ultimate volunteer’, the chair of Ivybridge Caring, Carol Beeson, a founding member and a trustee of the Charity since 2009, is retiring. There were four trustees then and Carol was in charge of recruitment and training of volunteers. This description, however, stops well short of her involvement with the charity. She was always on hand to deal personally with clients in emergency situations, to answer the phones during holiday periods, everprepared to go the extra mile to help a client. Despite the fact that she has spent most of her working life in the service of others, on the eve of her retirement she states – unequivocally – that volunteering is one of the most rewarding things to do and can, and does, make a real difference to the lives of others. Truly, the ‘ultimate volunteer’.

HELP US KEEP THE MOOR TIDY THIS SUMMER
By Christine Pascoe – Endsleigh Charity Champion
COMMUNITY INVESTMENT Endsleigh are keen to offer support in the local community with gift card donations and help with fundraising for local schools, charities and good causes. Many local good causes collect in-store on a regular basis and gift card donations have been made to a host of organisations. So far this year, these include the Ivybridge and District branch of Arthritis Research UK, local charity The Donkey Sanctuary and Rowcroft Hospice. If you think that your organisation would benefit from our support please contact me at Endsleigh on 01752 898989 or by email endsleigh@ wyevalegardencentres.co.uk
CHARITY FUNDRAISING I am delighted to report that your donations to our chosen charity, Marie Curie, have now raised a tremendous £3,563 so far this year, nearly half way to our target of £8,000 for 2017. The money raised equates to approximately 20 overnight nine-hour nursing shifts in a patient’s home. Funds being raised last month in store were from our second-hand book sale and swap shop, the everpopular Wishing Well and the ‘tea for two’ raffle of a pretty blue bistro set with white china tea set. During August there is the chance to win a barbecue set with accessories. Pop along to the reception desk to get your raffle tickets. Our intrepid team will be out on the road, attending the Cornwood Show on 12th August with children’s activity ‘paint a pot and plant a flower’ continuing to raise funds for Marie Curie. We are getting really excited about the sunflower competition, which will be judged on Friday, 8th September, and are looking forward to receiving your measurements and photographs. Keep watering and feeding your plants, and if you think you’ve grown a whopper send us your details before the closing date. Either bring a photo and measurement to the reception desk or email them to endsleigh@wyevalegardencentres. co.uk There are super prizes of Wyevale gift cards or equivalent gardening equipment for the three largest specimens! Once again, a big thank you to all our amazing customers for your continued generous support of our fundraising projects and raffles, we really couldn’t do it without you.
What a cracking summer we are having!

SUPPORTING SPECIAL CHILDREN By Hannah Whiting & Jess Butland A local charity which supports families with children who experience all forms of disabilities would like to thank the generous people of Ivybridge who helped it raise over £100 at the Lions Club funday. Friends and Families of Special Children help families from South Brent to Liskeard with children who experience all forms of disabilities, additional needs and difficulties with guidance, support and activities. A really worthwhile activity they are able to offer is regular ‘family time’ sessions at Hannahs in Ivybridge. The sessions give families the opportunity to have a fun, relaxed day in an understanding, supportive environment. Families are able to access many of the specialist facilities at Hannahs, including the hydrotherapy pool, sensory room and rebound and soft play, as well as enjoy arts and crafts activities and
refreshments. It is really important for families with children who have additional needs to be able to access leisure facilities like this without worrying about access issues, social anxiety issues or crowded environments, and equally important to be able to attend and enjoy as a family. In order to provide the extensive services the charity offers, they need to do as much fundraising as possible and are holding a quiz night at The Sportsman’s Inn on Wednesday, 16th August, at 8pm. If you would like to know more about Friends and Families of Special Children, or make a donation to support its work, please get in touch – ring 01752 204369 or email hannah@friendsandfamilies.org.uk To find out more about fundraising activities, such as skydives, quizzes and fashion shows see their Facebook page.
RED-HOT RECIPES FOR A DELICIOUS BARBECUE Barbecue season is well and truly here – from sizzling summer parties to laid-back family gatherings, there are plenty of opportunities to fire up the grill. Leanne Tancock, who runs the Ivybridge Slimming World, groups said: “Slimmers worry they’ll have to miss out on social gatherings to avoid derailing their weight loss, but the good news is that with a few simple swaps, it’s easy to stay on track while eating delicious food.
“Turn up with a dish from Little Book of Barbecue and friends and family won’t believe you can eat this well and still lose weight!” Every recipe in the book is perfect for those following Slimming World’s food optimising eating plan. Slimming World in Ivybridge is held in Chapel Place on Mondays 5 & 7pm, and Tuesdays 9.30am, 11.30am, 3.30pm and 5.30pm. Feel free to come along or call on 07930 473542.

First of all, thank you very much to those volunteer wardens and path volunteers who helped with the work on the boardwalk below Wilkies Moor on the Cornwood footpath through Longtimber woods. We are so grateful for people giving their time to help us at the National Park with our path projects. On a less positive note, a different plea for help. The busier summer months usually mean, unfortunately, more litter on the moor, and Andrea and I are continuing with the two minute litter-picks as part of the solution to this. If you are able to spare a few minutes, please do come along to one of our local events: l Sunday, 6th August –
10.30am-12.30pm. Rangers at Cadover Bridge with the National Trust team – meet us at the main car park, come and join us for two minutes or more! ‘Otter Spotter’ will be there, too, to lend a paw! l Tuesday, 8th August – 10.30am-12.30pm. Rangers at Shipley Bridge Car Park, with Otter Spotter. l Sunday, 20th August – 10.30am-12.30pm. Rangers at Shipley Bridge Car park, with Otter Spotter. So we are not only having a tidy up, there will also be our information van, including the ‘Otter Spotter’ Otter – look out for the Moor Otters. How are you getting on with your otter spotting? We have had a great response to this project so far, with people out and about otter spotting everywhere. It is not too late to pick up a leaflet, start collecting codes and enter the prize draw. Hope to see you on the moor, Ranger Ella

wellness PODIATRY AND CHIROPODY – WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? By Jackie Thomas of Abbey Road Podiatry This is a question that I get asked at least once a week! There is actually no difference between podiatry and chiropody. The change came about in 1993, when we wanted to align ourselves with Europe – most of their podiatrists start with the prefix pod-, eg podólogo in Spanish or podologue in French, so we changed to podiatrist. The prefix pod- comes from the Greek word for foot. Chiropod is also from the Greek 4. Don’t work out between 12noon and 4pm which means hand and foot. SUMMER FITNESS DOS AND DON’TS Summertime sunshine inspires many to tone up, lose weight and get in shape, says Claire Morgan-Hughes. I have 10 dos and don’ts to help you enjoy working out in the heat without wilting under the sun. Summer is my favourite season as it opens up a whole load of activities to mix up your workouts – bike rides, long walks, games in the park, outdoor jogging or running, swimming in the sea on holidays. The motivation to get out and do something is far greater than when it’s cold and miserable outside. But there are potential pitfalls, so here’s my guide on how to get the best out of your summer workouts. 1. Do drink lots of fluid Hot weather and sunshine causes the body to sweat more, which will increase during even mild exercise like walking, so make sure you replace the fluids you are losing or you will run the risk of dehydration. Try to drink a pint of water about an hour before working out and also rehydrate after your workout. 2. Don’t eat protein before working out Eating protein can increase your core temperature, which when working out in warm temperatures could cause heat shock. Much better to re-load on protein after your workout. 3. Do lower your core temp before working out Drinking ice-based drinks about an hour before exercise, or having an ice cold bath or shower, can lower your core temperature which will help you maximise your performance and delay the effects of the warm weather on your body.

HELPING CLIENTS FOCUS ON THE SOLUTION You may be aware of the “solution focused” approach. It is applied in a wide range of fields that support people and organisations. The approach is based on the principles and tools of Solution Focused Therapy (SFT), which I use – in combination with hypnotherapy – to help clients meet their mental health and performance goals. Given this, I thought it may be interesting to briefly explain what SFT is! At a basic level, SFT recognises that the client, and not the therapist, is the expert in their life. The client is therefore the best person to work out the solutions to their problems. Going further, SFT also recognises that the client already has the solutions within their life. No problem happens all the time, therefore during these times of exception, the client is using their own skills and resources to overcome the problem. It is the job of the SFT therapist to help you recognise these skills and resources so that you find a way to apply them to achieve the outcome that you want. And that leads nicely onto
another important SF principle: When we focus on what we want, rather than what we don’t want then we find change starts to happen more easily. With this future-focused, strength-based stance, we become more flexible and creative in our problem solving. The therapist is like a catalyst. Changes are decided upon, implemented and practiced by the client, and it’s therefore very empowering and lasting. When I was introduced to this approach it resonated strongly with my belief in people – that everyone has the ability to live, perform well, and thrive in their life. I therefore embraced it wholeheartedly! I am always amazed and inspired with what a little bit of Solution Focused thinking can achieve. So what do you want to be different in your life? And what will you notice about yourself when it’s happening? Tiffany practices in Ivybridge and is one of the South West’s leading Solution Focused Hypnotherapists. Contact her via hypnotherapist-plymouth.co.uk where you will also find more information about her work.

MONEY MATTERS with Ivybridge Accountants Ltd
David Richardson, founder of Richardsons Legal Services
Where do we stand with the Making Tax Digital initiative asks Lisa Lines HMRC have now succumbed to pressure over the Making Tax Digital initiative, further delaying its implementation until April 2019 for businesses over the £85,000 VAT threshold, and full-blown quarterly reporting not being implemented until “at least 2020”. While that means businesses don’t have to digitise for a few years yet, does that mean they shouldn’t? Cloud-based software can be purchased relatively cheaply now and offers some effective time savings with the use of bank feeds and email invoicing. For businesses with repeat customers, recurring invoice profiles can be used to regularly invoice with minimal input from the business owner. They can also provide a useful database of customer information which can be exported to use for marketing purpose (taking into account the changes to data protection legislation being introduced of course). Any software, of course, is only as good as the information entered into it! We are happy to provide training on many software solutions or assist with bookkeeping and VAT returns for our clients. Whilst Making Tax Digital is still a thing of the future, the Treasury has said “the main concern is the pace of the change. We recognise that businesses need longer to adapt and so that is why we are saying that companies will not have to use quarterly reporting until at least 2020.” Now is the time to get ahead and put in place digital systems so that you are prepared. With such delays in the implementation, it’s unlikely that HMRC is going to be sympathetic to businesses who are not ready when compliance becomes compulsory. Unwanted inheritances do occasionally occur, particularly when the person receiving the inheritance knows that when they die their estate will be charged inheritance tax. Inheritance tax is charged at 40% on everything in a person’s estate over £325,000. This includes cash savings, property etc. For a married couple, who leave everything to each other on first death, there is nothing to pay on first death and the remaining spouse gets a transferable allowance which means that they have a £650,000 allowance. Additionally, anyone who resides in their own property and leaves everything to their children when they die now gets a Residential Nil Rate Band allowance giving them an additional £100,000 tax free allowance; and this is set to rise over the next few years to £175,000. You could of course give the inheritance you have just received to someone else, your children for example, but unfortunately it is still fully counted in your inheritance tax calculations for three full years after you gave it away and it is not technically fully out of your estate for seven years – this is known as the seven year rule. As an example, let’s look at someone who owns their own home, worth say £500,000, and has savings of £500,000. And let’s assume they have a transferable allowance from a deceased spouse and are leaving everything to their children. They currently have allowances of £750,000 and their heirs will have to pay 40% of £250,000 to the government from their inheritance, ie £100,000 inheritance tax bill. However, if the unwanted inheritance was say £250,000 and they created a Deed of Variation within two years of the death of the person who left them their inheritance, the inheritance is technically out of their estate straight away without having to wait seven years.

An educational roadshow to help inform both dog and non-dog owners about some of the dog-related issues faced by the district council is coming to Ivybridge. South Hams District Council has teamed up with Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, for a series of educational roadshows, following up their campaign to overcome dog-related issues within the district. The roadshow will be at Ivybridge Market on Thursday, 25th August, and everyone is welcome to the
visit the stands, which will be manned by locality engagement officers from SHDC, together with a member from the Dogs Trust. At the stand you can find out how to be ‘Dog Smart’ and how to be a responsible dog owner. “The council is determined to address the dog-related issues in the district and we encourage you to come along to the roadshow to find out more about dogs,” said SHDCs portfolio holder for commercial services, Cllr Rufus Gilbert.
The first-ever Ivybridge Summer Fete is being held this September. Miss Ivy Events and the Ivybridge Chamber of Commerce are organising the fete, which will take place on Sunday, 4th September, 10.30am-4.30pm. There will be an array of amazing artisan and gift stalls, fabulous ‘make-do-and-mend’ workshops and a vehicle display. Musical entertainment will be provided by the wonderful Becky Brine, alongside plenty to keep the children amused, such as face
painting, magic shows and balloon modelling. Ivybridge’s local theatre group will be in costume to promote their next production, and some vibrant dancers will be sure to get you in the groove. Delicious refreshments, served by local businesses, will be available throughout the day, and Ivybridge’s great shops will be open and supporting the event. It’s set to be a great day to soak up the atmosphere and support the thriving local community.

Dogs Trust education and community officer Gemma Lewry said: “Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity with expert knowledge in dog behaviour. Our hope is that simple advice such as never leave your child alone with any dog, never tease a dog, don’t approach a dog you don’t know and always ask the owner before you approach a dog could prevent more dog attacks. “We all remember the Green Cross Code and we want Be Dog Smart to be just as well known.”

Year 6 swimmers from Woodlands Park Primary School competed at the English Schools Swimming finals held in Sheffield, racing against the top 24 schools, many private and sports institutions, in the country. The team of Jasmine D’Cunha, Sophia King, Megan Harris and Thomas Jones (Madison Oman, who helped them qualify for the finals, unfortunately could not compete) travelled with PE teacher Paula Clough to the competition. Out of 24 teams competing in each category, they made it to the B Finals for both events. In the freestyle relay they finished 3rd, ranking them 11th nationally, and topped this by winning the medley relay, earning them 9th place nationally.
