70TH ANNIVERSARY JOY FOR LOVING COUPLE
Musings
from the editor
Love was in the air as happy couple Bob and Doris Kennard celebrated 70 years of wedded bliss . Bob, 90, and Doris, 92, who is a resident at Ivydene Residential and Nursing Home on Staniforth Drive, hosted a party for fellow residents, friends and family to celebrate their platinum wedding anniversary. The
A Happy Christmas is a local Christmas
This amazing ‘real’ Santa sleigh has been specially built to transport Santa to the Erme Primary School Christmas Extravaganza on Saturday, 13 December (see page 18). The Hayman Construction and Hayman Joinery team took on the top-secret mission and now the school is working hard to add magic paint, sparkle and of course fill it with presents for all those good children who can come to the event.
couple met at the start of the Second World War and got married when they found out that Bob had been called up to serve in India in the war. They had just one week to organise their wedding and the local community and the couple’s family and friends rallied round to ensure that their special day went smoothly, providing food from their own rations and live music for dancing. The couple married on 4 November, 1944, at St Paul’s Church in Chatham. When the couple’s children grew up, they moved to Devon to raise their own families, so Bob and Doris followed suit. When asked the secret to wedded bliss, Bob said: “Sharing everything and lots of give and take. We love absolutely everything about each other”, with Doris adding: “there is nothing about Bob that I do not love.”

THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918

RECOUNTING LIFE IN THE TOWN O OO REMEMBERING THE FALLEN
A Christmas Box
(unless otherwise stated)
B
A Christmas Box and (left) the contents sent to non-smokers
There were actually two basic sets of gifts. Smokers received one ounce of tobacco, a packet of 20 cigarettes wrapped in yellow paper and a tinder lighter; whilst non-smokers received a packet of acid tablets, a khaki writing case and a lead ‘bullet’ pencil (literally, a pencil that fitted inside an empty bullet cartridge). Nurses did not miss out – they received chocolates. Princess Mary, the only daughter of King George V, was a teenager at the time. The Christmas Box was her idea. Funds were raised by public donations launched in October. An estimated 335,000 Christmas Boxes were delivered by Christmas Day 1914, but a shortage of brass meant that some soldiers did not receive their packages until the summer of 1916. We may never know if all the Ivybridge lads got their boxes on Christmas morning, or whether they had to wait.
REMEMBRANCE DAY There was once again a huge show of support for the Remembrance Day Parade and Service in Ivybridge. Led by the Plymouth Pipe Band, the parade was headed with the Standards and Royal British Legion members leading many veterans and representatives of organisations and youth groups from the town. At the War Memorial, the service was conducted

by Rev Chris Osbourne and the two minutes silence was sounded by a Royal Marine Bugler from the band based at HMS Raleigh. After the silence, there was a flypast by a replica of a WWI Bi-plane SE8 A courtesy of David Silsbury (left) and wreaths and tributes were laid by many organisations and members of the public. The Parade halted at the American War Memorial before marching back down Fore Street to rousing applause. facebook.com/theivybridgemagazine

Some believed war would be over by Christmas, and now it was December y Christmas 1914, the 1st Devons were dug into their trenches close to Meteren, on the Franco-Belgian border; whilst the 2nd Battalion was recovering from their efforts near Neuve Chapelle, Northern France. Lieutenant Orlebar, son of Colonel and Mrs Orlebar of Ivybridge, was also near Neuve Chapelle with the 2nd Middlesex Regiment. The 2nd Devons captured a fortified position called the Moated Grange on 18th December at the cost of seven officers and 120 other ranks killed, wounded or missing. Sadly, the Germans re-captured it on 19th. Did these men take part in football matches during the Christmas truce? Did they receive their Christmas Box from the Princess Royal? We know that the 1st Devons received gum boots on 16th December – 50 pairs for a Battalion of near 1,000 men! The Christmas Box sent to all soldiers was a brass box, embossed with a profile of Princess Mary. These boxes contained a Christmas Card which said: With best wishes for a happy Christmas and a victorious New Year, from the Princess Mary and friends at home, a picture of the Princess, and other small treats.

HARVEST FOR THE WORLD
REPORTS TOILET HISTORY INSPIRES SCIENTISTS
Adam Hart Davis with Jack, Abi, Ollie, Alisha, Alice and Cameron
There was a global approach to the traditional Harvest celebrations when the Year 3 and 4 pupils from Manor Primary School performed recently at the Methodist Church. Encompassing their Rainforest topic, the children reminded their friends and families of the importance of nature and the responsi-
bility of everyone to care for the world around them while still providing enough food for all. They used songs, dances and acting to great effect to both inform and entertain the audience! The children brought food in from home to contribute to the Ivybridge Foodbank, which will be shared among local families in need.
The cast, Simon, Ceri, Sam and Lucia, with some of the KS2 pupils
Local scientist and broadcaster Adam Hart-Davis visited Year 4 pupils at Stowford School to inspire them at the start of their new Science topic. Adam began by looking at the importance of sanitation and clean water in our lives, taking the children on a quick trip through the toilets of history, from the communal ones of Roman times to Henry VIII’s velvet-covered one, before
comparing some of the current “hanging toilets” found in less developed countries with what we are used to in our country. He then introduced the children to some of the most important scientists in history and their inventions, from Galileo’s work on using pendulums to measure time to replicating Erasmus Darwin’s early speaking machine, with plenty of fun and laughter on the way!
SPECIAL MILL TOUR Over 65 children from Erme Primary School enjoyed a unique educational visit to Stowford Mill, the iconic paper mill which is set to be transformed into a mixeduse development. The visit by Years 3 to 6 is the basis of a four-week project incorporating maths, art and English, as well as providing a very real link to the children’s local history. From estimating the size of the mill, to undertaking an art project involving drawing and making models of the mill and experimenting with printing, the children also investigated the mill’s history, which will be incorporated into a news report. The children were given a unique opportunity to go inside the derelict mill and see where the various presses would have been. The chil6
The children were shown some of the plans for the site
dren were abuzz with questions about the mill’s history and future – from “How many bricks would have been used to build the mill?” to “How high is the chimney?” The visit was especially poignant for some of the children whose relatives had worked in the mill. “My granddad used to work here in one of the offices,” said Olivia, a KS2 pupil.

MUCKY PUP’S BULLYING MESSAGE Anti-bullying was the theme when touring theatre company, Theatre Alibi, visited Stowford School to perform their play, Mucky Pup, for Key Stage 2 children. The play centres on Ben, who hates germs and spends most of his time and energy worrying about things that never happen
WELLY GOOD EFFORT
and, as a result, struggles to make friends. When his Mum offers to look after Chatty, the hairiest, smelliest dog, who loves playing in mud and rolling on dead squirrels, it looks like a disaster is waiting to happen, until Ben discovers that Chatty has a really amazing secret. The youngest children at Manor Primary School are helping ‘Give Hunger the Boot’ after organising fundraising events for Farm Africa, which helps farmers grow themselves out of poverty and Give Hunger the Boot, forever, in eastern Africa. The children organised a ‘Wear Your Wellies Day’, a bake sale and collected copper coins in wellies, raising £133. Lloyds Bank kindly invited the whole class to the branch to pay the money in – they were even allowed a peek into the giant safe!

New nursery’s unique approach
n Ivybridge mum is set to fulfil a longheld ambition of bringing a unique approach to early childhood education to the area when she opens the town’s first Montessori nursery. Tracey Bruce, together with partner Caroline Lucas, is opening the Little Orchard Montessori Nursery Woodlands in the grounds of Woodlands Park Primary School, Abbot Road, working around the clock to transform the existing old nursery building ready for the planned January 2015 opening. “I am very excited about the new nursery,” said Tracey. “Montessori nurseries offer a real alternative to parents of pre-school children and Little Orchard Montessori Nursery Woodlands will bring something a little different to Ivybridge. “We have set ourselves a very challenging target to open the nursery so soon, but we cannot wait to welcome the first children.” The Montessori approach to education was pioneered by Dr Maria Montessori (1870 to 1952). Her philosophy was to give children freedom in an environment as an alternative method of learning and teaching. She believed that this helps unlock “the child’s true normal nature” and allows the children to develop in a natural way. “I really love this philosophy, as it means seeing learning through children’s eyes,” said Tracey. “I really do believe that children who at-
A
tend a Montessori nursery are better prepared socially. We encourage children to be self learners, giving them a lot of independence to do things for themselves. We also encourage them to work together, for example the older child helping out the younger ones. “By adhering to the Montessori philosophy, we provide, I believe, the best possible conditions to promote the physical, social, emotional, and intellectual development of the children who are in our care. “We are also helping the children to become creative thinkers, which will be so important for their future success.” As well as a completely different philosophy to what was provided before, the environment
is being transformed as well. The space is being completely re-purposed to make better use of it and the building is undergoing extensive re-decoration. Beautiful outside facilities will include raised beds, a sand pit and a hard floor area for water play and painting. The nursery will also be able to use the school’s playing field and Woodlands Park will be ideal for nature walks. “The environment in which the children learn is vital to the Montessori philosophy,” explained Tracey. “The changes to the building are, therefore, integral to us delivering the proper Montessori experience. “There will be a real ‘Wow!’ factor to the place, and the children will love coming here.” As well as being able to use the school’s grounds, the nursery will work closely with its early years team, including joining in activities, sharing best practice and joint staff training. Tracey and Caroline’s Little Orchard Montessori Nursery Sparkwell – which has grown from four children to being full for most sessions – will have been open five years in January and interested parents are welcome to visit to experience the Montessori philosophy. To arrange a visit, or to find out more about what a Montessori nursery can offer your child, call 01752 837883 or 07974901367, email littleorchard123@btinternet.com, or see the website – www.littleorchardmontessori.co.uk

Every year, the Walters family rear free range bronze turkeys on their coastal farm in Kingston to provide high-quality Christmas dinners, as Richard Walters explains This year, our turkeys have very much enjoyed the extended summer romping around their field. They are fascinating animals and have an amazing curiosity for life, so I am glad we are able to provide them with an interesting habitat. They have spent many hours enjoying the plants and insect of the paddock, as well as homegrown cereals and potatoes which supplement their rations. On rainy days they have been entertained by brightly coloured cans and CDs which are hung in their shed, an ongoing source of amusement for these busy birds. Rearing the turkeys is a family effort, as is the processing, which is all done by a small team on farm. This means that the live birds are not transported off the farm, ensuring the highest welfare from the first day until the last. Living on a coastal farm in Kingston we appreciate that collecting a turkey from us may not be easy for everyone so there are other options. This year, for the first time, we are offering free delivery to addresses in Ivybridge town. You can order by phone - call 01548 810259 - or via our website www.turkeysfromdevon.co.uk If you prefer, you can still collect your bird, either from our home farm or from another farm in Wembury. 18

‘Scandinavian’ Christmas Flower Arch BY IVYBRIDGE FLOWER CLUB To make this attractive table or window decoration, you will need: • 10 inch posy pad with foam base (not the hard plastic one). • Several wooden kebab sticks • Decorative pins • Tray (at least 30 x 15 cm) • Evergreen leaves (bay, ivy, laurel, camellia) • Short snippets of filler foliage (sprigs of conifer, small hebe, pittosporum, ivy) • Small flowers such as spray roses, freesias, spray carnations, button chrysanths etc. • Seasonal berries, small baubles, candles. 1. Cut the oasis pad in half and soak in water for a few minutes. Place oasis sides together (wet foam sides together, hard foam sides on outside). Push a wooden skewer through all layers to secure them. Push a second skewer through about 10cm away. Cut off flush with the hard foam. 2. Cover the hard foam with the leaves starting from the semi circular edge, neatly place the leaves side by side and slightly overlapping and secure with decorative pins. Try to create a pattern with the pins and the leaves. Work down the foam to the bottom. Trim the bottom edge to let it sit flat if necessary. Silver backed leaves, bay, laurel or camellia will all look attractive. 3. Using short pieces of foliage, cover the wet foam to create a base for your flowers. The foliage should be roughly the same height and should reflect the semi circular shape. Now add small flowers, berries and tiny baubles. 4. To place your candles in your arrangement, attach two cocktail sticks to the side of each candle at the base with sticky tape. Let the sticks protrude from the base by about 5cm. Finally place your candles in the foam so that they stand upright. Place your arrangement on a tray to prevent the water in the foam from damaging your table or windowsill. Warning – do not leave this decoration unattended when the candles are alight.

Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council MAYOR’S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
I am honoured to serve this community as its Town Mayor and continue to be very proud of community life and look forward to seeing as many of you as possible in 2015. I would like to take this opportunity to wish every one of you a very Merry Christmas and a healthy, happy and prosperous New Year. Councillor Karen Pringle Town Mayor
Ivybridge Neighbourhood Plan
The Town Council, assisted by representatives from South Hams District Council and the local community, is working to develop a plan for the town for the period to 2031. It is recognised that housing development of around 500 homes has already been allocated in previous plans and some of those are in the planning system, so the Steering Group is concentrating on developing the work undertaken by the Town Team, led by Gary Streeter MP as well as the Princes Foundation, rather than going back to square one. The feedback from the community on those plans, the questionnaire in the summer and other development plans (eg Stowford Mill) has enabled us to gain an understanding of the important issues for residents. The vision for the plan is: “Ivybridge, a Friendly Mill town, offering the opportunity for healthy and sustainable lifestyles with a future which embraces its edge of Moor, bridge and riverside location.” Steve Hitch, Chairman of the Ivybridge Neighbourhood Plan Steering Group, has years of experience working to enhance healthy lifestyles through his work in rebuilding the South Devon Tennis Centre, a Trustee of Tone Leisure, as well as being a past Chairman of the Ivybridge Regeneration Group combined with his professional expertise as an Architect. The group is fortunate that he is leading the team in developing this plan for Ivybridge. Focus or theme groups will be established later this month to consider how, over the next 15 years, Ivybridge can respond to the challenges, not least of which is an ageing population and how we achieve the infrastructure needed to support people through their whole life, including addressing transport and highways matters. The feedback from our summer questionnaire about what people most liked about Ivybridge was the friendliness of the people and a sense of community – this is something that we want to build on and if you want to be a part of the Neighbourhood Plan process, helping us to make Ivybridge an even better place to live then please contact Lesley Hughes at Ivybridge Town Council or see the website www.ivybridge.gov.uk for a list of the Steering Group members, to make your views known. An exhibition of the proposals will be held in the early part of 2015 and will be advertised in the local media.

The Noise Next Door
At first glance, with their matching shirts and ties, five-piece The Noise Next Door could be just another all-male sketch act. In fact, these guys offer something different. Their shows are 100% improvised, relying on audience suggestions to inspire the creation of comedy gold. These young guys (Matt Grant, Charlie Granville, Tom Houghton, Tom Livingstone and Sam Pacelli) have acutely sensitive funny bones and a fantastic chemistry that makes the whole thing work. See them on Sunday 21st December. To book tickets call the Box Office on 01752 892220. Make a night of it with a pre-show basket meal.

The 12 days of Christmas advice Keep these 12 messages in mind and keep yourself, friends and family safe this festive period.
On the 1st day of Christmas I went out shopping... Do not leave mobile phones on pub or cafe tables, keep chequebooks and cheque cards separate, avoid carrying large amounts of cash and never carry your PIN number with your card. On the 2nd day of Christmas I shopped online... Make sure that you are using a secure web site and look for a green address bar showing the exact name of the company
you are trading with and web address beginning HTTPS: one letter difference can mean fraud. On the 3rd day of Christmas I had wrapped all the presents... Keep windows and doors secure at all times, keep presents and valuables from outside view, avoid stockpiling large amounts of gifts under the tree too early and keep garages securely locked if using to store larger items. On the 4th day of Christmas it was our work’s party... Never accept a drink from someone you don't know or trust, never leave a drink unattended and when out with your friends keep an eye out for each other. On the 5th day of Christmas I needed to drive home... Beware of the morning after. You
could still be over the limit. Don't offer an alcoholic drink to someone you know is planning to drive and don't accept a lift from a driver you know has drunk alcohol. The only safe limit is none. On the 6th day of Christmas I got lots of new presents... Marking your property is an extremely effective method of deterring thieves – making it clearly identifiable means its more difficult for the thief to sell and often reduces the value to the thief. On the 7th day of Christmas I was enjoying a drink... Binge drinking refers to drinking lots of alcohol in a short space of time and for men this means drinking eight or more units of alcohol in one session and for women drinking more than six units.
On the 8th day of Christmas we had an argument... Many people are violent when they are stone-cold sober. Blaming drink or drugs is an excuse, a way of denying responsibility and both may be the trigger for a particular attack, but they are not the underlying cause of Domestic Abuse. On the 9th day of Christmas I was walking home alone... During darkness you are safest in well-lit and busy areas and cover up any expensive looking jewellery, mobile phones, keys, cash and cards. On the 10th day of Christmas a big freeze kicked in... Check the condition of your vehicle
such as tyres, wipers and lights and before setting off make sure the windscreen is fully cleared and headlights are on if required. On the 11th day of Christmas we visited family... Beware of icy conditions, particularly during early mornings, and consider leaving a little more time for travelling so you can take extra care. Rushing your journey can lead to errors of judgement which can result in a serious accident. On the 12th day of Christmas we threw a New Year Eve party... On New Year’s Eve you can let fireworks off until 1am but it is an offence to store fireworks for private use for more than 14 days.

Health Beauty Fitness Wellbeing A forward focused solution to fit your life BY TIFFANY ARMITAGE Tiffany Armitage Hypnotherapy
As we approach the festive season, we can all understand how it feels when things get on top of us. Money worries, family issues, too much to do... we can struggle to cope. Using Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (SFH), I can help you get back in control and enjoying life – dealing well with whatever life has in store for you. SFH can reduce anxiety and excessive worrying. For some, it helps them get a good nights sleep. For others, it can improve physical health issues or even to change habits that have become a negative part of life. After only 12 sessions my life has changed for the better! I can now cope with work, stress and life in general. The whole process has been amazing and it has made me a better person. Thank You.

Chris, Paignton. June 2014
SFH is the modern approach to therapeutic change. It is based on the findings of neuroscience and the clinically proven aspects of other talking therapies. It is a forward focused therapy that means we don’t delve into the past, we work towards the solutions that fit in with your life. The sessions are therefore relaxing, positive and safe. While Christmas ‘tis the season to be jolly, lots of people find the festive period can leave them feeling far from merry about their weight. However, Slimming World Consultant Leanne, who runs the Ivybridge Slimming World group, says there’s no need to give up on Christmas cheer this year because you’re stressed about your weight, thanks to a new recipe book. A Slimming World Christmas shows people how to enjoy a super-slimming seasonal spread so they can keep their weight loss on track and look forward to a lighter, brighter new year. It features more than 60 recipes to help slimmers dish up a very happy – and delicious – Christmas, including traditional festive dishes, Christmas-party platters and great ideas for leftovers. Leanne says: “Christmas Day is centred around food and sitting down to a satisfying, delicious meal with your loved ones. Slimmers might think that they can’t enjoy turkey with all the trimmings but by making just a few small changes to the way you prepare and cook your dishes you can enjoy all your festive favourites without gaining pounds.” A Slimming World Christmas includes starters, mains, sides and sweets – and the clever new book includes a pick ’n’ mix menu which will enable even novice cooks to create a fabulous three-
All wrapped up! BY NIKKI SMITH, MCSP South Hams Physio
At the time of writing (mid-November), most people are on countdown to Christmas... Arrrhh! We all know someone who is ultra-organised, has bought all their presents and maybe even wrapped them by now! I like to be organised, and often do Christmas present shopping throughout the year (yes, I know), but when it comes to the wrapping, I always seem to leave it until the last minute and think that it won’t take too long and could even be enjoyable sitting down with a mulled wine and Christmas TV! How wrong am I? It always takes longer than you think, I often run out of paper or tape at a crucial moment and for some reason the postures we adopt when wrapping, eg sat on the floor, hunched over the dining room table etc, lead to aches, pains and cramp! Hopefully they resolve themselves after changing posture and moving around but some don’t – leading to repetitive strain injury. Repetitive strain injury (RSI) is a general term used to describe the pain felt in muscles, nerves and tendons caused by repetitive movement and overuse. The condition mostly affects parts of the upper body, such as the forearm, elbow, wrist, hands, neck and shoulders. The symptoms can vary, but often include pain or tenderness, stiffness, tingling or numbness and cramp. RSI is usually associated with doing a particular activity repeatedly or for a long period of time, just like my Christmas present wrapping marathons!

GUILT-FREE YULE LOG
Serves 12. 50 mins + cooling & chilling
• 6 eggs, plus 2 yolks • 85g caster sugar • 60g self-raising flour • 50g cocoa powder, + 2 tsp to dust • 6 sheets of leaf gelatine • 150ml skimmed milk • 3-4 tbsp sweetener, to taste • 1 level tbsp cornflour • 1 tsp coffee essence • 2 tsp icing sugar, to dust Preheat the oven to 190°C/Fan 170°C/Gas 5. Put the six eggs and the sugar into a large mixing bowl and whisk until doubled in size. Sieve the flour and cocoa powder into the eggs and fold in. Line a 40cm x 30cm Swiss roll tin with baking parchment, pour in the mixture and bake for around 10 mins or until springy to the touch. Leave to cool slightly. While the sponge is still warm, turn it out on to a sheet of baking parchment with a damp clean tea towel underneath and gently roll it up. Put the gelatine sheets in a bowl of cold water for 10-12 mins or until soft. Heat the milk in a saucepan over a medium heat until hot but not boiling. Meanwhile, put the extra egg yolks into a bowl with the sweetener, cornflour and 150ml of water. Stir well and tip this mixture into the hot milk then heat gently until thickened, stirring occasionally. Squeeze the excess liquid out of the gelatine sheets and add the sheets to the milk along with the coffee essence. Stir well, then remove from the heat and leave to cool. Unroll the sponge and spread the mixture over it evenly. Roll up carefully and leave to set in the freezer for 3-4 hours or overnight if possible. Transfer to the fridge for about an hour or two before you want to eat it. Dust with the extra cocoa powder and icing sugar and slice to serve.
course menu in just 60 minutes – what greater gift could a Christmas-day chef ask for? Leanne says: “Paired with the care, friendship and shared ideas that they’ll find at the Ivybridge Slimming World groups, the book really will help people to make their festive weight loss wishes come true.” For a taste of A Slimming World Christmas, try this can’t-believe-you-can-eat-this, guilt-free Christmas chocolate yule log (above).
Certain things are thought to increase the risk of RSI, including: • Doing a high-intensity activity for a long time without rest (when wrapping, remember to take breaks to sip your mulled wine!) • Poor posture or activities that require you to work in an awkward position (when wrapping, walk to the kitchen to get yourself a Christmas treat to encourage posture change regularly!) • Stress (don’t leave all your wrapping to the last minute, and ensure you have a large stock of paper and tape!) • Cold (wrap up warm or sit next to the fire!) RSI can be divided into two types. Type one is when the pain is the result of a specific medical condition, such as carpal tunnel syndrome or tennis elbow. The second type is when no specific cause can be found and is often referred to as non-specific upper limb pain/RSI. The first step in treating RSI is usually to identify and modify the task or activity that is causing the symptoms. If necessary, you may need to stop doing the activity altogether. Your GP can advise on anti-inflammatory medication to combat the inflammation associated with RSI. You can see a physiotherapist for advice on posture and how to strengthen or relax your muscles. Try and ensure you reduce your risk of RSI by maintaining a good posture, taking regular breaks from long or repetitive tasks, and trying relaxation techniques if you are stressed. Wishing you a happy, healthy festive season from all of us at South Hams Physio. GREAT SERVICE
SOME TESTIMONIALS SO FAR... Rebecca Taylor Estate Agents offer a friendly, professional service. I found the staff to offer a more friendly service than other estate agents I have used in the past. No hard sell or pushiness. I was completely kept up-to-date on the sale of my property. I can’t recommend them highly enough. Brilliant service and I would definitely use them again in the future. Mrs Mitchell
I have so far found this whole process very stressful, as most I’m sure. Out of all the estate agents you have been the most approachable and relaxed - I have met some believe it or not
that have actually been rude and of course very pushy. I would definitely recommend you to anyone I know looking to sell. Mrs C
Hi Rebecca. Just a note to say what a great job you did for us in selling our house. You not only got us the asking price but you got a buyer for us in a matter of a few weeks. A job very well done. I would definitely recommend you to anybody.” Mr Ryder
Would like to thank you and your team for the amazing job you have done in making the sale of my house as smooth as possible.
You did way beyond what any other estate agent would have done and so so friendly. My mum thought you were a neighbour or long lost friend when you popped in to say goodbye. Thank you all so much. Will certainly recommend you to anybody thinking of selling a property. Mrs Ryder
Thank you Rebecca Taylor for making the sale of my mother’s house after her sad death as easy as possible. Your caring support, kindness and willingnes to go beyond the call of duty helped me through this difficult time. After selling my mother’s house I then decided to sell mine and once

Remembrance is actively supported by 1st Ivybridge Scout Group, and is always an important time in the Scouting calendar, and this year was no different. On Saturday, 8 November, the Cubs helped the Royal British Legion with Poppy selling at Tesco Lee Mill, while the Scouts not only sold poppies but also packed bags in aid of the poppy appeal. On following day, the 1st Ivybridge Scout Group joined the Remembrance Day Parade and Service. ERME VALLEY HARRIERS team of under 17 men performed fantastically well in the recent National Cross Country Relays in Mansfield, finishing 13th out of 63 in an extremely high standard field. Owen Parkin led the team off over the 3K undulating and twisty course and came back in 40th place, recording a time of 9.59. Nathan Brown was

next to go, pulling the team up to 31st with a 10.07 leg, with Will Battershill running a great anchor leg to bring the Harriers home in 13th place; Battershill recorded the 4th fastest time, clocking 9.03. Vets at the club have been performing well at recent races, too. Mike Hansen has had a superb few weeks by breaking two male vet 55 club records dating back to 1996. At the Dartmoor Vale Half Marathon, Hansen was 8th overall and 1st mv55 with a time of 1.26.40, while at the Bideford 10, Hansen was again 1st mv55 with a time of 1.04.07. The Harriers had other successes at the Dartmoor Vale races. In the half marathon, Sarah Hirons was 2nd lady and Carol Hansen 3rd fv50. In the 10K race, it was a great day for the club with Alison McEwing 3rd, Paddy Trinder 5th, Alison Thorn 7th and Cleo Andrews 8th. McEwing was 1st lady, Trinder 1st male, Thorn 1st fv40 and Andrews 2nd fv40. Rose Bralsford was 2nd fv45 and Nicky Chatfield 3rd fv45. There was further success for the Harriers at the Bideford 10 with Alison Thorn continuing her impressive form by finishing 1st lady and 1st fv40. Carol Hansen also did well and was 3rd fv50. There was a good turnout at the Plymouth 10k, which attracted an entry of over 2,000. The relatively flat course produced many fine performances and several personal best times. Cleo Andrews was 3rd lady and 1st fv40, and Richard Stephens, Laurence Harris, Dan Marks and Liz Bowden all achieved personal bests. î ermevalleyharriers.co.uk/

A SUCCESSFUL season at all levels of the club was celebrated by players, officials and fans at Ivybridge Cricket Club’s presentation evening. There were no surprises among the 1st XI winners, with the batting award going, in his absence, to Sri Lankan Jeewan De Silva. He was the leading run scorer in the B Division, with 642 runs at an average of 69, which helped the club to third place, its highest-ever finish in the Devon League and just missing out on promotion. The 1st XI bowling award went to Ivybridge colts product Pete Abraham, who took a personal best 26 wickets in the season. The 2nd XI celebrated promotion from C Division and the awards had some familiar names who were at the heart of that success. Club chairman Des Solomon is still showing everyone how to score runs at the age of 54, having scored 333 runs at an average of 55 to secure the

batting award, and Paul Veale, for so long a first XI regular, finished leading wicket-taker in the division with 33 wickets. The Sunday XI player of the year was Tom Hall, another Ivybridge youngster, who finished leading wicket taker with 12. Hall played a couple of useful tail-end knocks and also put in some useful performances for the 2nd XI later in the season. The most-improved player award went to Adam Huxtable, who cemented a place in the first XI thanks to some powerful middleorder hitting and finished second in the 1st XI batting averages. Young wicketkeeper George Thompson won the Chris Forward Young Player of the Year trophy. His excellent wicketkeeping for the first XI had an influence on a number of games during the season, including assisting in seven dismissals in the home win over eventual champions Tavistock, including four stumpings. Thompson also
scored his maiden career ton in a friendly against Abbotskerswell. The Clubman award could have gone to a number of dedicated volunteers, but the 2014 winner was Andy Johnson. He coached and managed the club’s Under-11 sides to unprecedented success in 2014, completing a league and cup double in the Palladium League B Division and reaching the A Division cup final. With the assistance of Martin Templar, Andy developed a strong squad, with a large number going on to West Devon representation. Andy also helped, whenever possible, on the ground, with his knowledge from his day job as a greenkeeper invaluable in continuing to improve the ground at Filham Park. He also still manages to find the time to play for the first XI and play a full role in the social side of the club. The evening was staged in the club’s pavilion at Filham Park. î www.ivybridgecricket.co.uk
