LOCAL FREEMASONS SUPPORT RIDING THERAPY CHARITY A South Hams-based charity which provides riding and therapy for children and adults with cognitive and physical disabilities has received financial support from local freemasons. Erme Valley RDA Ltd, which is presently offering 3,000 rides a year, has been awarded £1,000 from the WAKE Fund, a trust conceived by the Right Worshipful Brother William Alexander Kneel, Devonshire Provincial Grand Master from 1970 to 1984, and the late owner of Kneels laundry and dry cleaners.

Deadlines for January 2016 issue Ad booking: Thurs, 10th Dec Editorial: Fri, 11th Dec Delivered: From 29th Dec

The fund, which now stands at £1.8million, distributes the interest earned annually to local nonmasonic organisations who are in need of help. This year, support totalling £40,000 was given to local organisations. Members from Erme Valley RDA Ltd attended the presentation evening, and took the opportunity to thank the freemasons. “We are very grateful for this donation, which will help us to purchase some new educational equipment,” said a spokesperson for the charity.

Historical Redlake’s Christmas extravaganza With over 50 stalls, a food court and various activities for all the family, Redlake, the historic former clay building with its distinctive chimney stack between Ivybridge and Bittaford, will come to life again this Christmas when it hosts a fabulous festive extravanganza. The Redlake Christmas extravaganza takes place on Sunday, 13th December, between 10am and 4pm. It will be formly opened by local personality Ian Calvert and Ivybridge Mayor, cllr David Gray. There really will be something for all the family to enjoy, including Party Pony rides, an amazing Christmas raffle, artists, crafters, bakers, wood turners and gift wrappers. Fresh Christmas trees will be on sale, and there will also be hands-on workshops, such as pottery, where you can try your hand at throwing a pot, and a children’s craft area, where little fingers can keep busy making those special Christmas decorations and cards for family and friends.

No Christmas event would be complete without a visit from Father Christmas, and the Redlake Extravanganza is no different, where he will be handing out gifts from his sleigh. There is still time to get involved – the organisers would love to hear from local schools or groups who could perform during the day. They are offering discounts for various activities throughout the day to any performers taking part. The Christmas extravanganza is just the first of a host of events planned for Redlake. The new owners of the site, The Eddystone Trust, plan to turn the historic building into a hub for communities from the South Hams to Plymouth. With free entry, free parking and located right on your local doorstep, why travel any where else to get those unique, locally sourced gifts and presents? Free range, local birds The Walters family rear free range bronze turkeys on their coastal farm in Kingston to provide high-quality Christmas dinners for local people, as Richard Walters explains. Turkeys are fascinating animals and have an amazing curiosity for life, so I am pleased that we are able to provide them with an interesting habitat. They have spent many hours enjoying the plants and insects of the paddock, as well as home-grown cereals and potatoes which supplement their rations. On rainy days, they have been entertained by brightly-coloured cans and CDs which are hung in their shed, an ongoing source of amusement for these busy birds. Rearing the turkeys is a family effort, as is the processing, which is all done by a small team on farm. This means that the live birds are not transported off the farm, ensuring the highest welfare from the first day until the last. Collecting a turkey from us may not be easy for everyone, so there are other options – please see our advert on page 8 for details of how to order and collection/delivery options.

A simple Christmas table arrangement By Ivybridge Flower Club

You’ll need: • Bunch of roses • Tree Ivy • Skimmia • 9 inch oasis posy pad with a plastic base • 2 candles • 6 cocktail sticks and tape • Christmas stars, baubles or other Christmas ornaments 1) Soak the oasis pad by letting it sink into the water – don’t press it down or dry air pockets will occur.

2) Tape 3 cocktail sticks to the base of each candle to add stability for when placed in the oasis. 3) Place the candles in the centre of the oasis at different heights. 4) Make three placements of ivy, followed by the roses. If you intend to light the candles, be sure the foliage will be well away from the flame. 5) Fill in with skimmia or other foliage with berries. 6) Place the stars, baubles etc within the foliage. 7) Fill in any gaps. Ensure the oasis is covered to give a pleasing edge to the arrangement.

Five tips for festive fitness

SUNDAY 20th Carols by Candlelight Ivybridge Methodist Church, 6.30pm Christmas Readings and Carols. 6pm. St Petroc Church, Harford.

Staying fit over Christmas can feel like an uphill struggle, what with all the Christmas parties, family get-togethers and chocolates and sweets tempting you, says Claire Morgan-Hughes from Devon Fit Camp. But it doesn’t have to be the end of your diet, or the finish pole in your exercise routine. The festive period is a time when people often can go way overboard with their eating habits, and these bad habits make us lethargic and can set us back months in our fitness goals. It’s important to come up with realistic goals over Christmas, as everyone is going to slip from their normal routine and eat things they know they shouldn’t. I have come up with five ways to enjoy a healthy and happy Christmas for you and your loved ones.

CHRISTMAS EVE Crib Service 4pm. St John’s Church, Blachford Road. Carols at Bittaford Chapel 6.30pm Midnight Mass 11pm. St John’s Church, Blachford Road. Midnight Communion Service Ivybridge Methodist Church, 11.15pm CHRISTMAS DAY All Age Communion 9.15am. St Petroc Church, Harford. All Age Communion 10.30am. St John’s Church, Blachford Rd. Christmas Day Service Ivybridge Methodist Church, 10am

Focus on your goals and stay motivated: Stay focussed. Don’t skip a workout and don’t binge on junk food. The first days of Christmas, with all the tempting treats to hand, are always the hardest but willpower early on will be worth it in the end.

BOXING DAY Rugby - OXO Cup 12noon kick off. Ivybridge Rugby Club. Details: Tel. 01752 894392. THURSDAY 31st - New Year’s Eve

Try deer: It might scar the kids for life when you tell them you’re eating Rudolph for dinner, but venison is a very lean, low calorie and low fat meat.

Family New Year’s Eve Party @ The Watermark See page 19. New Year Party 8pm-12.30am. Ivybridge Rugby Club. Details: 01752 894392.

If you do cheat, do it properly: You will probably cheat on healthy alternatives at some point over Christmas, so when you do, make sure it’s worth it with only the best food available. Family walks: Walking the dog, or just going for a walk together, is a great way for everyone to burn calories and enjoy the winter scenery.

Claire shares a success story - see page 31

Moderation: Keep everything in moderation. Just because there are sweets and chocolate in the house doesn’t mean you have to eat them all at once.

clubs& groups CRAFTY CHRISTMAS MAGNIFICENT YEAR As it’s final big fundraising push approaches – the Christmas collections (see page 7 for this year’s Rotary Club Santa sleigh routes) – the Rotary Club of Ivybridge has been looking back at its fundraising achievements for President Adrian D’Cunha’s chosen charities of Devon Air Ambulance and Jeremiah’s Journey, as well as other local causes. The club has had a magnificent year of fundraising. In November, the club presented a cheque for £16,803 to ShelterBox in relation to fundraising for the Nepal Earthquake Disaster. The club is indebted to Devon Doctors, the out of hours medical service for Devon, who substantially contributed to the total. In excess of £2,000 was raised for Jeremiah’s Journey by the President’s run in this year’s London Marathon, and the club recently gave £2,000 to Ivybridge & District Community Transport Association (also known as Ring

and Ride). There have also been donations to St Luke’s, WaterAid and MacMillans. Ivybridge Rotary Club meet every Wednesday, from 6pm, at The Watermark. FIND OUT MORE: Contact Adrian D'Cunha on adrian.dcunha@ virgin.net

JANUARY JOLLY There will be no Jolly Dollies’ coffee morning in December, so the next JD coffee morning will be on Saturday, 23rd January, 2016, at 11am in The Watermark.

AUTUMN ARRANGEMENT Twenty-six members of Ivybridge Flower Club spent their November club night in workshop mode, with the task of designing an autumn table arrangement. Although the colouring of every arrangement was very similar – rich shades of golden yellow, orange, red and brown – there were many different styles and interpretation.

Ivybridge Crafters have been invited to decorate a tree for St John’s Church Christmas Tree Festival on 5/6th December, and they are also hosting two Christmas workshops at Endsleigh – see pages 4-17. n The Watermark cafe, Wednesdays morning, 10am-12noon 2nd: Calenders, £5. 9th: Christmas Book Tree, £5. 16th: Glitter decorations, £5. n The Watermark cafe, Thursday evenings, 7-9pm 3rd: Jewellery Gift set, £10. 17th: Glitter wine glass, £10. n Endsleigh terrace cafe, Fridays, 10am-12noon 4th: Christmas Book wreaths, £7.50 11th: Wooden calendar, £7.50. 18th: Christmas decorations, £5. Ivybridge Probus Club President Michael Bailey teed off first to get another successful club golf day underway at Wrangaton GC. Members and guest players enjoyed a course in perfect condition for the event, superbly organised by Mike Holman, on a beautiful autumn day. Back in the 19th hole, players agreed to waive score comparisons. They did agree, however, that the lady guest was ahead by a good margin.

Also at the meeting, the club’s new President, Lyn Bance, was presented with her badge of office by outgoing President Anne Glanville. The club’s next meeting is on Monday, 14th December, at the Henlake Suite at The Watermark at 7.30pm, when the demonstrator is Julie Collins, whose title is “Something for Christmas”. Visitors are welcome, £6. FIND OUT MORE: Contact club chairman, Hilary Newcombe, on 01752 892647

SUPERSONIC SPEAKER Guest speaker Brian Portch was welcomed to Ivybridge Probus Club’s November meeting to deliver a highly-anticipated talk on Concorde. Before Brian’s talk, members enjoyed a delicious lunch and Barry Seaward the lucky winner of a bottle of Bordeaux red wine in the raffle. It was also announced by Michael Bailey that the recent successful golf day (see above) would be repeated. combined with an eclectic repertoire ensures a rare treat for any listener. Kathryn Roberts & Sean Lakeman are proud to announce their album Tomorrow Will Follow Today, their boldest musical statement to date. “An absolute masterclass in how to do it right” says festivalsforall.com After being voted “Best Duo” in the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2013 and also nominated for “Best Original Song” (The Ballad of Andy Jacobs), in 'Tomorrow Will Follow' they add two rarely covered traditional songs to eight confidently written compositions to create a superb new album. This husband and wife duo had been absent from the music scene for almost a decade before their highly-acclaimed “Hidden People” CD (2012) was released; Sean busy touring the world with brother Seth's band whilst Kathryn remained in Devon bringing up the couple's twin daughters. The Roberts-Lakeman name has become synonymous with “quality” during their musical careers which started when they were signed to a major label as teenagers. Now after nearly two decades in music, Kathryn's sublime vocals merge seamlessly with Sean's deft and inventive live guitar work on stage and his award-winning sonic skills in the studio. In addition to his chart topping hit records for brother Seth Lakeman, Sean has this year alone produced albums or tracks with The Levellers, Billy Bragg, Frank Turner, Imelda May and Bellowhead .....as well as a string of other folk/acoustic acts.

he second Christmas of the war was approaching. Last year, I wrote about Christmas 1914 in the trenches, this year I have taken an extract from my book South Devon in the Great War which takes us to nearby Kingsbridge. Army units from other parts of the country were stationed and billeted in South Devon. One of these army units was the 10th Battalion, the King’s Own Royal Lancaster Regiment (King’s Own for short). The 10th King’s Own was based in Devon from the outbreak of war and a special relationship of sorts seems to have developed between the people of South Devon and the battalion. The 10th Kings Own was formed in August 1914 under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Bonomi, and soon moved to B Kingsbridge. By Christmas that year, 250

Christmas went very well. Parties for the men were given in both the Wesleyan and Congregational Church schoolrooms in Kingsbridge, where roast beef dinners were served, followed by plum pudding. These were followed by music and singing – ‘Tipperary’ and ‘Hold Your Hand Out (you naughty boy)’ – and, according to the local paper, a stage performance by Private Hughes who turned out to be ‘a first class comedian’. On Boxing Day there Soldiers of the 10th King's Own in Kingsbridge, 1915 was a smoking concert in soldiers from the King’s Own were billeted in Kingsbridge Town Hall which reportedly the town. went ‘with a merry swing’ and in January the What effect did the posting of so many men sergeants of the battalion gave a whist drive in and around Kingsbridge have on the local and dance for the town. population? REPORTS

The children at Manor Primary enjoyescsdas;lcjsa

Children at Erme Primary School came to school dressed in the clothes of the future career they aspire to. A wide range of jobs were represented, including cooks, comedians, farmers and footballers. There was even a tiger! The day also helped raise money for a teaching kitchen, which is the school's current fundraising project, and the children took part in a competition for the Royal Mail which involved writing a letter of application for their chosen job.

Kela, Joseph and Luke

Bats and Hedgehogs classes from Manor Primary school went on a steam train ride from Buckfastleigh to Totnes as part of their topic on transport. The children had the opportunity to sketch some of the engines, before visiting the station’s museum. All the children enjoyed the anticipation of waiting on the platform as the steam engine chugged into the station. For many, it was their first ride on a steam train and they were surprised by how noisy and smoky it was! A great and memorable day was had by all.

All of the children at Manor Primary enjoyed taking part in World Maths Day. Parents and carers also joined KSI children in the morning to share maths games. The children were set a variety of mathematical challenges throughout the day, such as finding as many different ways as possible to make the answer ‘10’. Ideas varied from repeated addition to complex calculations involving multiplication, division and even square roots.

Daniella, Amelie, Jamie and James with minister Ralph Ward

Children in KSI at Manor Primary enjoyed preparing for an amazing apple tea event. It began with picking apples from the school’s fruit trees and then using these to bake delicious apple cakes to serve at the tea. During the children’s Friday enrichment lessons, they made pom pom apples, book marks and pictures. Parents and carers joined the children and enjoyed tasting the children’s cooking, browsing the stalls and then visiting and enjoying story time in the school’s new yurt. 26

The Ivybridge magazine

As part of their RE work on people that inspire you, Stowford’s Year 4 classes invited Ivybridge Methodist Church Minister, Ralph Ward, to visit them and explain why Jesus still inspires people 2,000 years after his death. The children had prepared some questions to ask Ralph, to help them understand more about why Christians follow Jesus. These included: When and why did you become a Christian? How do you become a Christian? Do Christians have to go to church? Can people who are not Christians believe in God? What made you become a priest?

Ralph willingly answered all the questions, and then talked to them about why he believes that Jesus is such a special and amazing person who still inspires people today. He explained how people were drawn to him, giving up their homes, jobs and families to follow him and how he befriended some unexpected people, such as a tax collector. He also talked about the miracles Jesus performed, from walking on water and controlling the weather, to healing all range of illnesses and raising his friend Lazarus from the dead.

Is your house made of money? Patrick Goddard Independent Financial Adviser - Manning and Company

Life expectancy in the United Kingdom has increased to 78.7 years for men and 82.6 years for women, that’s up by 26% for men and 14% for women in the last 20 years.Good news, of course, but a long retirement leaves many people with the very real challenge of how to make savings and pension pots stretch. Equity release is a real opportunity for retirement age home owners who are ‘asset rich’ but perhaps ‘cash poor’. It’s a means of freeing up money from your home to cover everyday expenses, or just to enjoy life a little more, without having to move. There are other possibilities, too. Would you like to help your children get on the property ladder with a lump sum? Or maybe you

The Friends of the Erme Primary School put on a real show with a stunning Fashion Show and Sale to raise money for a teaching kitchen at the school. The well-attended event, which raised over £470, would not have been possible without the help of volunteers and a cast of models to strut their stuff. The Friends’ next big fundraiser is the school’s Christmas Fair on Saturday, 12th December - see page 7 for details.

need to pay for care at home in your later years? With equity release you can do this AND stay in the house that you love. You don’t have to move. Some people worry about how they may lose state benefits, or eroding any future inheritance, or even entirely losing the home they have worked so hard for.

Although these may be legitimate concerns, equity release plans have changed significantly in recent years. Nonetheless, equity release is a major decision and it is vital to obtain the advice of a suitably qualified and experienced professional to be able to make clear and informed decisions.

well Tis the season to be jolly! BY NIKKI SMITH, MCSP South Hams Physio

We are of course fast approaching the big ‘C’ and with that comes parties and works do’s. For this year’s work do, I quite fancied food and a boogie at a cheesy disco, however my more sophisticated colleagues suggested a nice meal with good food and company! Which will reduce the risk of party related accidents, injuries and bruises that you can’t quite remember occurring! According to studies, more than 80,000 people a year need hospital treatment for injuries such as falls, cuts and burns during the festive period. Alcohol can be the chief mischief maker, so the obvious advice is to enjoy your Christmas party while enjoying alcohol in moderation, or make sure you have an understanding friend who will help you home safely! Festive accidents are not all related to over indulging in ChristR mas spirit, though. Beware of

your Christmas tree, that Norwegian spruce is not as innocent as it looks. About 1,000 people a year are injured while decorating their tree. The advice is to safely use a step ladder to place decorations high up, or ensure you have a tall friend or family member to help decorate the tree! Other accidents include cuts from scissors while wrapping or burns from cooking. Good advice is to slow down and not rush to complete all the tasks that we often pressurise ourselves to do. After all, for most of us it isn’t the perfectly folded napkin or symmetrically cut carrot batons that brings us happiness, it’s the joy of spending time with loved ones that makes Christmas special. Edith, Mackenzie, Rosie, Molly and Frankie with Mrs Langridge

There were tears as well as laughter as staff and children at Stowford School said goodbye to a much-loved member of staff. Gail Langridge worked at the school for nearly 20 years as a teaching assistant and touched the lives of many pupils, both past and present. Renowned for her patience and compassion, she also brought a real flair for art to her role. Her final act was to judge the entries for a book competition, in which children had to draw their favourite character from a story in order to win a book token. In a special assembly, Gail took centre stage as the children read

messages they’d written for her and shared their special memories of things she had done for them. She was presented with gifts, flowers and cards and she told the children that she had always considered her job a pleasure, not work, and would miss them all. Headteacher Helen Tipping said:“When I asked “who has Mrs Langridge helped?” in our special assembly, nearly every hand in the hall went up. That is a true reflection of just how special Gail is. She will be really missed by all of us and we wish her all the best in her retirement, but we hope she’ll visit us frequently.”

I’m delighted to share Ruth’s story with you. “When I started with DFC, I was despairing at my weight and shape,” explains Ruth. “I have always tried to keep fit, but also always struggled with my weight. I finally realised that I couldn’t do this on my own anymore and called DFC. “Joining is one of the best decision I have ever made, and probably one of the hardest. The classes were great, but emphasised my lack of fitness and ability

due to being so over weight. “Now, I have completely changed my way of eating, following the DFC clean food approach. I feel a million times better and have lost three stone!” We are looking to help people who are really serious about improving their health, improving their energy levels and challenging themselves. If you are looking ahead to a New Year where a New You is at the helm, then have you thought about the benefits of using Solution Focused Hypnotherapy to help you to achieve your goals? Perhaps you want to stop smoking? Or maybe you’ve vowed that this will be the year when you (finally) get on board that aeroplane and get off to the sun – without a care in the world. Or, maybe, you’re deciding that you want to do something about feeling less stressed and that you are looking to become calmer, more relaxed, and less snappy? It could be that maybe you want to diet a bit more and take control of what you eat? Tiffany Armitage is a fully qualified and insured Solution Focused Hypnotherapy practitioner who is based in Ivybridge and at

Christmas cheer to local causes David Richardson founder of Richardsons Legal Services

This month I am going to depart from my usual ramblings about legal services and talk instead about two local causes I support. The All Stars Theatre Group is run by David and Jan Halifax, who live in Plympton. They have a daughter, Emma, who suffers from learning disabilities and 10 years ago they set up the All Stars Group to help adults with learning disabilities have enjoyment and an interest in life. They meet every Saturday morning to rehearse a show which they perform twice a year at The Muse Theatre in Plymouth. This year’s Christmas show is called Janners Panto and it is a fun musical with not-too-serious slapstick comedy. The show is on Saturday, 12th December, starting at 7pm and

Long-awaited work on a sodden path is a great end to a productive year, say DNPA Rangers Andrea Roberts and Ella Briens All our Christmases have come at once! Finally, work has taken place on the Kings Gutter path in Longtimber Woods! Historically, this path has always been wet as it was designated as a footpath despite being a leat! In the past, we have worked with the army, Tavistock Taskforce, Stover School and other volunteers to keep it usable. Thank you to our contractor Mike Bassett and his team for not only bolstering the previous work on the route, but also adding a new drainage point which will really benefit this path. Also, can we thank the patient walkers of Ivybridge who 'walked around' as the work took place. May we also take the opportunity to thank everyone who has helped us over the last year with our Stone Row conservation project. Just a reminder that the last session on this site will be Sunday, 6th December – please do get in touch if you would like to join in. And a final thanks to all those unsung heroes in the community who regularly litter pick and keep an eye on Dartmoor – especially our Dartmoor National Park Volunteer Wardens. Christmas for us is still a busy time of year as the Ranger service will be out patrolling over the festive period every day, apart from Christmas Day, so do give us a wave if you see us out and about. Merry Christmas and best wishes for 2016, Ella and Andrea If you are interested in finding out more about the Ranger service first hand, or think you may need their help please, contact them on: Ella – 07711104546 / ebriens@dartmoor.gov.uk Andrea – 07720509270 / aroberts@dartmoor.gov.uk

Is your garden ready to go public? Are you proud of your garden, and would love to share it with the general public? If that sounds like you, St Luke’s Hospice Plymouth would like to help you show off your green finger magic in 2016. St Luke’s is looking for gardens with the best and the brightest blooms in the area to open for visitors during its 2016 Open Gardens programme. This year’s programme had a total of 22 garden dates, including 11 completely new locations, most of which opened exclusively for St Luke’s. In total, the gardens attracted 5,609 visitors and raised £54,000. Among the highlights was the opening of the stunning Flete House (above) for the first time in 10 years. People born in the onetime maternity hospital flooded through the gates, with 1,000 visitors entering in three hours. For the 2016 programme, the charity is piloting a ‘by appointment only’ scheme alongside the regular events. This will mean gardeners will arrange directly with those interested in visiting

them to open at a mutually agreed time and date. This will hopefully allow smaller gardens to open without the parking and refreshment challenges experienced at larger events. Wayne Marshall, St Luke’s community fundraiser, said: “We’re looking at ways to make it easier for people to take part in the Open Gardens programme and we’ve been touched by the enthusiasm for this new idea. We’ve already agreed some stunning locations opening for us in 2016 and we’re hoping to add even more!” To date, next year’s schedule already includes five new gardens opening on the Harrowbarrow village walkabout on Sunday, 2nd July, 2016, and eight gardens opening in Horrabridge village on Sunday, 17th July, 2016. The instantly-recognisable free Open Gardens 2016 brochure will be available from your local garden centre or St Luke’s charity shop early next year. To sign up, or if you have any questions about Open Gardens 2016, please contact Wayne on (01752) 246594.

Rugby club celebrates 40 years

Ivybridge Rugby Club celebrated its 40th anniversary in style with a dinner and dance at the Duke of Cornwall hotel in Plymouth. The event coincided with the exact date 40 years ago that a group of players met in a local pub and decided to form an Ivybridge team. Founder member and current president, Alan Knight, revealed that the original idea was actually the brainchild of his wife, and he paid tribute to all the wives, girlfriends and volunteers over the years who have supported the players and help give the club its family appeal. Players, both past and present, were well represented and VIP guests included the mayor and deputy mayor of Ivybridge, MP Gary Streeter, who played for the club in the past and speaker. Martin Aldridge. The 200 guests’ night finished with dancing to local band Sweat.

HARRIERS’ YOUNGSTERS SHINE l athletics It has been a great few weeks for two of Erme Valley Harriers’ brightest young stars. Great Britain junior international Will Battershill produced a fantastic performance in the senior mens’ race at Newquay. Battershill, only 17 but competing in the Under 20 category incorporated within the seniors’ race, won the race and beat many experienced athletes. Owen Parkin (pictured), also 17, has had a few weeks to remember. Parkin won the Tavy 5 and made his half marathon debut at the Grand Pier Half Marathon in Weston-Super-Mare with a 4th place finish and a time of 1.18.04. However, his 3rd place finish (35.09) at the Plymouth 10K was exceptional as Parkin was beaten to 2nd place in a sprint finish involving former talented club member Travis Bramley. At the Tavy 5, young Joe Perry was 2nd and 1st U15, Alison McEwing was 4th and 1st lady, whilst Alison Thorn was 5th and 1st fv40. Still in the Tavistock area, the Harriers were well represented in the annual seven mile road race. Allister Bristow was 3rd overall and 2nd mv40, whilst Cleo Perry was 2nd lady and 1st fv40. Dave Hawke was 2nd mv70. Cleo Perry, Sam Perry and Mandy Plummer were 2nd ladies team. It has been a busy time on the marathon front, with four Harriers completing the tough Eden Marathon. Mike Hoskins was the first Harrier home in a time of 3.36.35 and was followed by Dave Lloyd (4.17.13), Mark Livermore (4.37.58) and Kevin Paull (4.50.23). A week later, seven Harriers completed marathons at different locations. Andrew Perry (3.08.06), Neil Holmes (3.12.57) and Mike Hoskin (3.27.11) ran at the spectacularly scenic but extremely tough Snowdonia Marathon. Holmes was 3rd mv50, whilst Hoskin did particularly well as he ran his second marathon in a week. Elsewhere, Andy Trigg finished 29th overall and 1st mv50 with a time of 3.05.39 at the Leicester Marathon. Craig Macalpine (3.32.37) and Neil Travers (3.40.26) ran the new Bristol & Bath Marathon, which for the first half was flat but hilly for the last 11 miles! Richard Lander Stow

did well at the Dartmoor Vale Marathon with a time of 3.39.11. In recent weeks Jean Baptiste Rouvelin completed the Cornish Marathon in a very good time of 3.31.07, whilst Richard Lander Stow tackled the tough ‘off road’ Gower Marathon, completing it in over 6 hours; a very tough race, the winner took over 4 hours. There was success at the Dartmoor Vale 10K as Simon Swift (41.38) was 1st mv45, Jo Edwards (44.39) 1st fv50 and Jaine Swift (46.23) 2nd fv45. In the half marathon, Harriers’ only representative Tom Packer (1.24.53) was 5th and 1st senior man. At the Templer 10 there was a great turnout at this multi-terrain event in the grounds of Stover School, Newton Abbot. Jo Edwards was 4th fv45, whilst Jaine Swift was 1st fv45 and Sam Perry 2nd fv45. Tony Doonan was 1st mv70. Edwards, Swift, Perry and Jo Melvin were 2nd ladies team. The Bideford 10 proved to be an excellent event for the Harriers. Allister Bristow (57.14) 2nd, Alison McEwing (62.41) 2nd lady and Cleo Perry (64.16) 4th lady. The Harriers turned out in force at the wet and windy Plymouth 10K. Apart from Parkin’s fine performance, other Harriers did well. Allister Bristow (35.26) was 6th and 1st mv40. Alison McEwing (38.49) was 2nd lady, whilst Cleo Perry (39.04) was 4th lady and 1st fv40. Alison Thorn (39.32) was 2nd fv40. The Harriers also won both team prizes, with Owen Parkin, Allister Bristow, Steve Newcombe and Paddy Trinder representing the men. The ladies team comprised of Alison McEwing, Cleo Perry, Alison Thorn and Clair Dexter. At the Drogo 10, a popular but tough ‘off road’ race, Neil Holmes ran well to finish 8th overall and 1st mv50.

Becky’s national and international success l trampolining An Ivybridge trampolinist is celebrating double success. Becky Jarrett, 26, was crowned National Champion for level 8 on double mini trampoline (DMT) at Telford International Centre in July. On the back of this success, Becky was invited to compete in an international competition, The Antwerp Cup, in Belgium. She travelled to Antwerp on 25th-28th September, where she competed as a senior lady for the first time, and was crowned Antwerp Cup Senior Lady International Champion. “I am absolutely delighted with the results this year,” said Becky. “After having to take time out last year due to injury, it has been tough getting back to fitness.” Becky, who works full-time, travels to Taunton three times a week for high performance coaching from Jason Richardson. She is also heavily involved with Plymouth Phoenix Trampoline Club, where she trained for over 10 years and now coaches the up-and-coming trampolinists. She also finds time to dedicate two hours a week to coach at Ivybridge leisure centre.

l swimming A club record haul of medals was the reward for the team of 36 swimmers who represented Dinnaton Swimming Club at the Plymouth Cities Championships in October. The squad achieved 117 medals, including 30 gold. Highlights included Reid Jones, 13, who won five golds, and Jasmine D’Cunha, 9, and Hollie Steer, 13, who both picked up four golds apiece. The Dinnaton relay teams came in third in both the boys and girls events, with Charlotte Craigie, Quinn and Reid Jones, Hollie Steer and Will Green all making it to Championship Finals as well. To cap a stunning performance, Reid Jones and Hollie Steer will receive the Neptune age group (11-13) achievement as part of the city

of Plymouth Lord Mayor’s awards on 16th November. Hollie will also receive the Titan best girl Salver. New head coach Matt Henry takes the reins at the club at the end of November. He will lead the team out for the first time at Bristol, where swimmers will be looking to finalise their Devon qualifying times. Dinnaton Swimming Club is one of the top competitive swimming clubs in the country. From beginners’ lessons through to Masters sessions for adults, the family-orientated club provides the opportunity for families to learn to swim or improve their techniques together. î For more information about Dinnaton Swimming Club visit dinnatonswimming.co.uk
