A member of the House of Lords visited Ivybridge Community College to encourage students to become more engaged with the political process. Lord Teverson met sixth form students to talk about the work and
role of the House of Lords, which was followed by a question and answer session on various aspects of the parliamentary process and life at the Houses of Parliament generally. The visit was arranged through the Lord Speaker’s “Peers in Schools”
programme, which sees peers visit schools, academies and colleges to give talks in support of the citizenship curriculum. The programme was established in 2007 and has so far involved around 90,000 young people.
APPLY NOW FOR FUNDING FOR COMMUNITY PROJECT Funding applications are now open for South Hams District Council’s Community Re-Investment Projects Fund, which supports community infrastructure projects within the South Hams where major development have taken place. Whether it is for natural play spaces, hand-carved benches, community building upgrades or safe pedestrian links, the fund welcomes applications for com-
munity infrastructure funding. The fund runs every year and was created using the New Homes Bonus from recent developments. The money is available to voluntary and community groups, as well as town and parish councils, in areas where developments are taking place. Last year, £153,900 was allocated. Since the fund began in 2013, it has supported over 25 projects from a variety of groups.
To apply, projects need to be near a recent development of more than 10 homes, or more than three homes in smaller parishes, and must have the support from ward councillors and the parish or town council. South Hams District Council’s has launched its “Are you ready for winter 2017?” campaign in a bid to help residents be prepared for any winter surprises. When an emergency happens or the weather takes a wintery twist, they are advising people to be prepared by signing up for social media alerts in advance. The campaign signposts people to where they can find information quickly and easily. If you want to be kept up-todate about floods – #floodaware – follow the Environment Agency on Twitter @EnvAgencySW. For the latest weather news, including weather warnings, follow @metofficestorms and @metofficeSWEng. Keeping on the move safely is vital when wintery weather strikes, so if you are worried about the road network in bad weather make sure you are following @Devonalerts and @highwaysengland For health matters, such as flu and winter bugs, follow @NHSchoices SHDC is also encouraging residents to get in touch with their local council early if they need help with information about the nearest store of sand bags or who they need to speak to about getting more. Ivybridge Artisan Market’s December market will take place in conjunction with The Watermark Gift Fair on Saturday, 2nd December, from 9.30am to 1pm. LIGHTING UP FOR LAURA The residents of Drovers Way are this Christmas again decking their homes with fantastic festive illuminations to raise money for charity. Local people are invited to pop by and see the amazing lights and decorations, and if they see fit leave a donation in one of the collection buckets. This year, the money will go to CoppaFeel! in memory of Laura Weatherall-Plane, who sadly died this summer after an eight year battle with cancer and who was an ambassador for the breast cancer charity. Decorations are going up on the second weekend of December, and Father Christmas will be visiting the close on 22nd December at 6pm.

HOW TO MAKE A CHRISTMAS WREATH
By Ivybridge Flower Club What you will need: • Metal wreath ring • Hay (from pet shop) • Reel wire and stub wire • Foliage – conifer, bay, eucalyptus ivy • Fir cones, berries (fresh or artificial), small baubles • Wired ribbon Method Cover the wreath ring with hay, binding it tightly with reel wire. Make small bunches of foliage, three pieces in each bunch
about 3-4” long. Secure each bunch with wire. Starting at the bottom of the wreath and one half only, using reel wire, attach three

CHRISTMAS IN&AROUND IVYBRIDGE YOUR CHRISTMAS SURVIVAL GUIDE You can survive – and enjoy – the festive season without piling on the pounds, says Claire Morgan-Hughes of Devon Fit Camp It’s Christmas time, which means mulled wine, mince pies, turkey, turkey leftovers, chocolate, alcohol, plus time off work – it’s a bad combination for our waistlines and our motivation. And it’s cold outside, too! So how can we survive the festive season without piling on the extra pounds that take weeks to shed? I’ve come up with the Top 10 ways to enjoy a healthy and happy Christmas. It is a time when people often go way overboard with their eating habits, which make us lethargic and can set us back months in our fitness goals. These are just a few handy tips that can help keep you on the straight and narrow so you don’t go completely off the rails and
undo all the hard work you’ve done this year. 1) DITCH THE SWEETS Swap sugary sweets for fruit – cranberries are great and have only 25 calories in half a cup. 2) FAMILY WALKS Walking the dog or just going for a walk together is a great way for everyone to burn calories and enjoy the winter scenery. 3) Supplements With the shorter days and flu season beginning, one of the best ways to stay healthy is through additional supplements. Even a basic multi-vitamin can help pep you up. 4) Alcohol alternatives Fruit cocktails are a healthy alternative, or of course you could offer to drive and stick to water, saving yourself a hangover and your friends a fortune on taxi fare. 5) Dance the night away If you are out at a party hit the dance floor and burn off those excess calories 6) Healthy Christmas dinner When it comes to the big event, pile your plate high with veg and
opt for a nice, lean turkey. Cauliflower is a great source of vitamin C and it’s good for your heart. 7) Workout Just because your normal routine’s gone out of the window it doesn’t mean you can’t work out – 10 minutes of HIIT training first thing will set you up for the day, or go for a 30 minute run, or dust off that rowing machine and give it a go. 8) Healthy start Start the day with a nice cup of hot water with a lemon slice. This will help to alkalise the stomach and settle your PH levels, important when you are eating a lot of rich acidic food throughout the day 9) Avoid some foods While it’s nice to indulge, you will help yourself if you can steer clear of the bread and cheese. Opt for a smaller plate and pile your plate high with salad at those Christmas
teas and go for meat rather than cheese. 10) Healthy seasonal snacks And finally, there are some lovely healthy choices to be had at Christmas time – make sure you try some tasty nuts or how about a delicious tangerine? COMPARING THE PRESENT AND THE PAST Photographs comparing how Ivybridge looks now with images from the past are currently the main feature on Ivybridge Heritage and Archives Group’s website. As part of a ‘Then and Now’ project, the group tasked members of Ivybridge Camera Club to reproduce old images of the town with current photographs. The results make for interesting viewing, illustrating how Ivybridge has changed over the years, or in some cases, how little the buildings have altered. The collection of photographs can be viewed at ivybridge-heritage.org Next year marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great War and Ivybridge Heritage and Archives Group is currently researching all the men in Ivybridge on the Roll of Honour
displayed at St John’s Church. The group is endeavouring to collect photographs and information of all the brave young men named on the Ivybridge War Memorial, which it hopes to display on its website and in the town next November. Ivybridge Heritage & Archives Group would welcome any photos or information that people may have relating to these two topics, or indeed anything relating to the history of Ivybridge in general. SCHOOL REPORTS HALDON FOREST VISIT The children in Dormice and Robins classes at Manor Primary School headed to Haldon Forest in search of the Gruffalo! It was the first time on a coach for some of the children and they really enjoyed spotting the big lorries on the way. When they got to Haldon they followed the green family trail and found lots to do on the way. One of the best bits was finding
a space in the forest where they could learn and play together; they made camp fires, added to old dens they discovered and found lots of ways to use sticks! Afterwards, they followed the trail until they arrived at the viewing area, where they stopped to have lunch. One last walk and the Gruffalo was found with orange eyes and purple prickles. Both classes had a great day!
THE ENORMOUS TURNIP At the beginning of November, KS1 at the Erme Primary School enjoyed a visit from a puppet show from The Theatre Royal in Plymouth as part of a current whole school drama project in conjunction with the theatre. The children became part of the storytelling and helped to use the props and puppets to act out the tale of The Enormous Turnip. They were enthralled by the whole experience as the puppets brought the tale to life, and excitedly helped the main characters to ‘pull up the turnip’ at the end!
REMEMBRANCE The children at Cornwood Primary School had lots of discussions about Remembrance, and the effect that war has on people. Every child made a poppy, in various materials and mediums, and the school made its own display, based on the wave currently in Plymouth. The school has also been selling poppies and wristbands for the Royal British Legion. 18

FOOTBALL Stowford football team took part in the Ivybridge Learning Community football tournament at Ivybridge Community College, on 14th November. Having won their pool in the previous round, Stowford played against two other Ivybridge School – Manor and Woodlands, the other pool winners. Stowford drew 1-1 against Manor and 0-0 against Woodlands. Woodlands then beat Manor, providing an exciting final, Stowford v Woodlands. The final score was 0-0, meaning the trophy was shared between the two teams.

SCHOOL REPORTS
WORLD WAR TWO The children in Year 5/6 at Manor Primary visited Slapton Sands – the site of Exercise Tiger – as part of their World War Two topic. The day brought history to life with the children seeing the Sherman tank which was dredged from the sea in 1984. They also spent time on the beach re-enacting the D-Day
landings and empathising with the soldiers who took part in that operation back in June 1944. To conclude the trip, they visited the Tor Cross memorial and reflected upon the impact of the war on civilians, with many residents having to leave the area and give up their homes for the American troops. The day was truly memorable.
BALL SKILLS FESTIVAL A team of pupils in years 5/6 from Woodlands Park Primary School took part in a ‘Ball Skills Festival’ at Ivybridge Community College on 7th
November. The team participated in basketball, volleyball, netball and handball games. The team enjoyed the experience and were delighted to learn new skills. FLYING START Erme Primary School KS1’s ‘Come fly with me’ project got off to a flying start with a visit from Ben Jackson, an air crewman from the Royal Navy base at Culdrose. Ben spoke to the children about his role on the Merlin helicopter. The children were particularly fascinated by the helicopter’s strength and aircrewmen’s skill in saving lives and helping people to safety.

Ivybridge has many incredible volunteers, who do a fantastic job in the town and there is never an exception, nonetheless, we are delighted to announce that The Nick Cummins Community Group of the Year Award has been given to Ivybridge Foodbank. The award is recognition of the work undertaken by volunteers to allow those in crisis locally to visit and collect necessary food parcels, as well as providing a sanctuary to listen, have tea and provide support in signposting clients to other organisations who may be able to help further. The David Britton Citizen of the Year Award has been given to Kay Winstone in recognition of the tireless

ENERGY ADVICE SUPPORT FROM ENERGY SUPPLIERS Energy suppliers are not always our favourite organisations to speak to, but if you do have to get in touch with them there are a few useful things to ask about: 1) Ask them if you’re on their best tariff. Most of us are on their expensive Standard Variable Tariffs and could save money by moving to a one or two-year fixed tariff. Being loyal to a company does not mean they automatically give you the best price, so be brave and ask! 2) If you, or anyone in the home, has any sort of health problem or additional needs, ask to be put on their Priority Services Register. This means you’ll get better customer services and priority help during power cuts. This is especially important if you have medical equipment that uses electricity, you have a stair lift or if you keep medication in the fridge. Extra benefits can include more regular meter readings so that your bills are always accurate, setting up password schemes so you know who’s calling, bills produced in better formats or sent to a nominated person, and sometimes free gas safety checks. 3) If you receive any benefits due to your health or household income it is worth checking if you qualify for the £140 Warm Homes Discount. This grant is available from most of the big energy suppliers and is credited to your electricity or gas account. People on Pension Credit get it automatically, but others must apply now by contacting their supplier because it is awarded on a first come, first served basis.

So here we are again, the nights draw in and Christmas is around the corner. As an employer, how generous do you feel towards your employees? According to my wife, who is a HR manager, all staff should be rewarded well for their work, resulting in an engaged workforce. Who am I to argue? So, what better way than a Christmas party, or maybe a mid-year barbecue? Per year, you can spend up to £150 per head on staff parties and such. This can actually go quite a long way. You can have as many parties as you like – the limit is per year, not per party. You can also give employees trivial benefits – up to £50 cost – providing its not a voucher, or cash, with no tax or NIC implication. So this would be things like Christmas hampers, birthday gifts, etc (it may be a push to make a gift for their cats birthday!). Incidentally, cash bonuses are always taxable. If you want to go a step further you can look at other benefits, but these unfortunately will attract tax and NIC. That isn’t to say other benefits shouldn’t be considered. For example, private healthcare, which could be invaluable to an employee, may not cost huge amounts and the employee, at worse, will only pay 40% of the cost of the cover through their tax, dropping to 20% if they earn less than £43,000. For several years it has been possible to give employees mobile phones for private use with no tax implications, but of course, this is not without risk! Company vehicles can be worth a look, but unless you’re looking to go electric or a van, then this option is far less appealing than it was. Merry Christmas!

By Kelly Grigg of Howard & Over When a child is taken from its mother and put into care for adoption, the mother tends to grieve for the loss of this child. Many mothers deal with this grief by having another baby. However, on many occasions this baby is also removed for the same reasons. A study conducted by Lancaster University found that in 2014, 7,000 mothers in England were in this position. In 2016, this number had risen to 11,000, involving 32,000 children. Former Judge Nicholas Crichton has argued for many years that the only way to break this destructive cycle is to help parents deal with their problems. Suffolk County Council have introduced a project to do just this. The Positive Choices Project in Ipswich helps mothers who have had their children taken away and placed for adoption by giving them the support they need to improve their lives and move on. The Government, in recent years, has given several millions of pounds to help fund projects like these. However, this is not enough, with this work only able to help several hundred women out of the 1000s suffering. Researchers say that the rise in the number of women having numerous children removed from their care shows that a different scale of intervention is needed. More women need to be given support for dealing with this type of loss and grief. Access to nationwide projects and psychological therapy needs to be improved. But this is only the start. It is only a matter of time before a change in statutory legislation is needed to help tackle this rising issue. ACTION-PACKED PLYMOUTH VISIT Children in class 3 at Cornwood School enjoyed an action-packed day in Plymouth. The trip started with a visit to Plymouth’s Synagogue, where the children were told about the history of the building, some of the key practices of Judaism and the links between Judaism and Christianity. Some children dressed up and role-played being a rabbi and other key personnel, and everyone was able to handle artefacts. Next stop was the ‘We The Peo-
ple Are The Work’ exhibition at the Council House. The children looked at the work of Peter Liversidge before choosing protest slogans which were painted on to placards to take back to school. While at the Council House, the group also found out about how local government decisions are made and had a tour of the council chamber. They also visited an exhibition about the reconstruction of Plymouth after World War II. The final stop was to see the Poppy installation on the Hoe.

Since our last column, we celebrated RedPod Art’s first birthday in style with many of you coming out to our Making a Scene Exhibition in September.
