BRANCH AWARD The Ivybridge branch of the Royal British Legion has been honoured for its proactive activities over the past year or so. The Crediton Cup was awarded to the branch in recognition of the initiative shown by the branch. Chairman Dermot Roberts received the award from Devon County RBL President Commodore JK Moores OBE at the Devon County AGM held at Crownhill RBL. The award recognises initiatives such as creating Harry’s Patch in partnership with other Ivybridge organisations, including the town and district councils. Also of note is the branch’s partnership with the Argyle Fans Trust, including the Poppy on the shirt project and fundraising on match days at Argyle’s Home Park. î Find out more about the town’s

Free membership to South Hams CVS for Ivybridge groups

Voluntary and community groups in Ivybridge are being offered the chance to join South Hams Community and Voluntary Services (CVS) for free. Ivybridge Town Council has agreed to cover the cost for local groups to join the CVS for a year in a bid to support voluntary and community groups. The CVS offers advice and support to voluntary and community groups, charities and social enterprises. Working with Ivybridge Town Council, it is offering its Local Supporters Package, which gives discounts on training and events, a monthly funding bulletin and more dedicated time of the CVS Group Development Officer, to name but a few benefits, for free to Ivybridge groups. The CVS provides a wide variety of support, including advice on organisational structures and

from the editor Choice and value in ‘nearBUYS’ This issue marks the fourth anniversary of the launch of The Ivybridge magazine. In that time, it has evolved somewhat (to say the least!), but it has, I hope, always contained informative, interesting community content relevant to you. I have always regarded anniversary issues as a good time to introduce changes, and this issue is no different with two new sections this month. nearBUYS(page 3) is a ‘shop local’ campaign which aims to highlight the choice, convenience and affordability of using local shops and businesses, which is not always the perception of local people... The second new section is ‘Homes & Gardens’ (page 23), which has inspiring features for the home and garden, and showcases the local tradespeople and businesses which can help you fulfil your ambitions.

YOUTH CENTRED Ivybridge Town Council has demonstrated its commitment to supporting activities for the youth of the town by providing financial support for the redevelopment of Victoria Hall. Councillors agreed at January’s full council meeting to give the hall trustees a grant of £50,000 towards redeveloping the building. The hall, used by the Scouts, Guides, Brownies and Cubs, as well as other community groups, is in urgent need of modernisation. The council’s support – £5,000 a year (£6,000 with interest) over a 10 year period – will enable the trustees to apply for match funding now that this money is in place.

Would you be willing to host a tea party for about 8-10 elderly Ivybridge people? Contact the Elderly, a charity addressing the challenge of lonely elderly people in the community, is looking for volunteers to host a tea party in their own home. Once a month, older people have Sunday afternoon tea at the home of a volunteer. With 11 volunteers already, one more person offering to host would mean no-one had to do it more than once a year. Ivybridge police officer honoured

An Ivybridge police officer’s distinguished service has been honoured by the Queen. Sergeant Oliver Tayler, 42, was one of 16 officers across England and Wales awarded the Queen’s Police Medal. Sgt Tayler, who joined the force in 1993, has most recently been heavily involved in road safety initiatives, including the Honest Truth Young Drivers Project. The campaign has teamed up with thousands of drivers nationally to provide life-saving safety messages to young people during their driving lessons.

Fish shop closes

Ivybridge Fish Company has ceased trading. “We are absolutely devastated, but there is no other option,” said proprietors Kev and Tasha. “We have put our hearts and souls into our business, but sadly rising overheads mean we are not able to survive in this current climate. “We would like to say a huge thank you to all our fantastic customers. We have loved getting to know you all and will miss seeing you all. “Your support and appreciation have been the biggest reward of all.”

Free autism advice for adults Local adults affected by autism, their families and carers are being invited to attend free drop-in information and support sessions at Ivybridge Library. The sessions, being run by the National Autistic Society (NAS), aim to give people affected the advice they need to plan and make important life choices. Support brokers will be available at Ivybridge Library on 9th February between 10am-2.30pm and on 26th February between 3-6pm. Autism is a lifelong condition which affects how they communicate with and relate to others, as well as how they make sense of the world. Many people with the condition find it difficult to make decisions and often need support to do things others take for granted. NAS Support Brokers work with these people to identify their support needs and develop plans to help them to live fulfilling and

n wars, people die in very many ways. Most soldiers killed during the Great War died as a result of artillery shelling. The next most likely cause was being shot by rifle or machine gun fire; fewer men were killed by gas, grenade or bayonet. A tiny proportion were shot by firing squads. A soldier might be killed in action, died of wounds or may have died many years later. Some were simply listed as missing. Also, a great many soldiers sent to India, Turkey and the Middle East contacted diseases such as malaria and typhoid from which they died. Airmen were shot down or burned. Sailors might have been blown up by a torpedo, burnt or drowned. It should not be forgotten that civilians died, too. Zeppelins dropped bombs on British towns and German battleships occasionally shelled the East coast. Civilians were killed when passenger ships sank. In Belgium, France and Russia, countries overrun by warring armies, many more civilians died than here in Britain. Charlie DeVille was the son of John and Hannah DeVille who

HMS Exmouth in 1906 lived at 3 Western Road, Ivybridge. He joined the Navy and by 1915 when he was aged 36, he was a Leading Stoker on board HMS Exmouth. HMS Exmouth was a Duncan Class battleship, launched at Birkenhead in 1901. She joined the 6th Battle Squadron in the Home Fleet on the outbreak of the war. The Exmouth was armed with four 12 inch guns in turrets, twelve 6 inch guns, twelve 3 inch guns, six 3 pounder guns, two Maxim guns and four torpedo tubes. She had a top speed of 19 knots and a complement of 750 men. In February 1915 HMS Exmouth was docked at Chatham, Kent. Charlie DeVille and some shipmates went ashore on leave. On returning to the ship on 16th February Charlie fell into the water and drowned. He is buried in Gillingham (Woodlands) cemetery, Kent.

STORYTELLING MAGIC A professional storyteller visited Stowford School to spread a little of his magic to both Year 4 and Year 1. Steve Manning spent a morning transporting Year 4 children back to the Dark Ages. They learnt about life in Anglo-Saxon times and how to prepare themselves for a Viking attack, before having the opportunity to meet Alfred the Great himself! Not only did they get to hear Alfred’s story “firsthand”, but they also had the chance to question him about his achievements and experiences. In the afternoon, Steve took his storytelling chair to Year 1 and entertained and enthralled the children with a variety of tales which both captured their attention and developed their listening skills.

Families, staff and pupils at Manor Primary School were treated to a real spectacle when the children in Years 5 & 6 performed the pantomime ‘Aladdin Trouble!’. With colourful costumes and backdrops, the stage was set for a highly polished performance. The children had rehearsed hard to make sure that they were word-

perfect, and their singing, dancing and acting combined to create a show that wowed every audience!

ENJOYABLE & EDUCATIONAL TRIP TO EDEN Year 3 and 4 children at Manor Primary School enjoyed a wonderful trip to the Eden Project as part of their Amazon Rainforest topic, write Stefanie and Beatrice. They became Rainforest Explorers, embarking on a quest of discovery and finding out how the rainforest can provide the essentials for life. The children were encouraged to think about how plants are adapted for life in the tropics, how they can be used for human survival and how indigenous people have adapted them for their own everyday use. The children have since used this exciting experience to enrich their own writing and topic work.

ACHIEVEMENT REWARDED

Children at Woodlands Park Primary School whose efforts stood out during the autumn term were rewarded with a special achievement award at the end of term. Her arrangements were fresh and colourful, using spring flowers including hyacinths, various narcissi, tulips and forsythia as well as garden foliage, and gave members ideas for making the most of a spring bunch. SCHOOL’S SHOWSTOPPER CHRISTMAS FAIR The Erme Primary School put on a spectacular showstopper Christmas Fair which raised a “jaw dropping” £1,470, the best ever total, for the benefit of the children at the school. The magic included a real Santa sleigh, made in a top-secret mission by Hayman Construction and Hayman Joinery team. As well as Santa himself, Elsa from Frozen made a guest appearance, much to the delight of the children. Beautiful handmade Christmas treasures crafted by the children were all snapped up, thanks to the generous parents and friends.

The event was really well attended and the school would like to thank all those who donated items for the mega draw (over 25 prizes!) and helped make it the best Christmas Fair yet.

Helping your child talk more PAMPERED SHOPPING Stowford Friends are holding a Pamper and Shopping Evening at Stowford School on Friday, 20th March. There will be craft stalls, jewellery, cakes and cards, plus you can indulge in a choice of pampering treats (for a small charge). Doors open at 7.30pm, and entry is just £1. Communication is a vital skill that all children need to learn. Children develop communication skills from birth and they rely on speech, language and communication to be able to learn at school and play with their friends. At the Seamoor Children’s Centre, they have been running a successful ‘Let’s Talk More’ Group for children around two years of age with communication and language difficulties. It looks at strategies to help children with their attention and listening, understanding and expressive language. The eight week course involves lots of games and activities to support the skill that they are trying to develop. General tips to help your child with their speech and language development: • Keep ten minutes free each day for a ‘special time’ for talking and communicating with your child. • Being face to face is very important. Get close to your child and make plenty of eye contact. • When you are speaking, use shorter sentences and talk slower. This will help you to make your speech more interesting to listen to by making it more ‘tuneful’. • Let your child take the ‘lead’ during your special time, this may be making animal noises or pulling faces, but this is still a kind of interaction with you, so you copy them, do what they do and have fun! • When you can, say back to your child what they were saying in their sounds, eg if your child says ‘ah’ when cuddling her teddy you say, ‘ah teddy, soft teddy’.

Point to what you are talking about around the house, when you go out, or when looking at books. Remember to talk about what you can see happening as well as naming the things you can see. • Use the same little sayings when doing your daily routine, eg “open the door…. close the door…. coat on…. coat off…. up the stairs ”. This will help your child expect to hear these sayings at those times and join in them with you. • Avoid the temptation to put pressure on your child to make noises or say names of things, eg “Oh look Ellie a car, say car Ellie, say car for mummy”. If your child does copy your words and sounds then that’s great, but don’t try and make them because this stops communicating being ‘fun’. • Above all else, when sharing your ‘special time’ together have plenty of cuddles, use lots of eye contact, and most important of all enjoy yourself! Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council Encouraging the use of local renewable energy

Ivybridge Town Council is keen to encourage the use of local renewable energy resources and over the past few years we have supported studies into harnessing the power of the River Erme and have had solar panels installed on the Town Hall to help keep our costs down for the Ivybridge community. Local environmental group, PL:21 Transition Initiative (PL:21), have also been trying to identify a renewable energy project that could be community owned and last July an organisation called Communities for Renewables CIC undertook some research across Ivybridge and the wider area. The company first looked for suitable sites for large ground and roof mounted solar panel schemes. They then reviewed all of the previous studies that have been undertaken into the hydropower potential of the River Erme, looking at the weirs and previous mill sites. They updated the calculations with today’s costs to check whether the projects are financially viable. As PL:21 covers the whole PL21 postcode area, the research considered sites at Lee Mill and Anna Mill, near Wrangaton, as well as fields at Filham and a site near a local china clay works. The conclusion from this latest research is that the Stowford Mill site in Ivybridge has the best potential for a local renewable energy project, but the new site owners are already in an agreement with a company to try and progress this. Roof-mounted solar panels offer the second best option and PL:21 is trying to get a foot in the door with the larger organisations on Lee Mill Industrial Estate to see if they are interested in working with PL:21 to develop a scheme. The plan would be for local people to buy shares to fund the installation of solar panels and the profits from generating the energy would eventually go back into other projects to help local residents and organisations save energy and money in their homes and buildings. Another idea is for the Ivybridge community to bulk buy solar panels to get them installed on residents roofs at a reduced cost and for a small percentage of the income from them to be put into a community pot. Acupuncture is increasingly being used to assist in improving women’s fertility. Women are often delaying starting a family, which can sometimes cause a problem conceiving. Unexplained infertility causes a huge amount of stress and upset which, from a Chinese point of view, interrupts the flow of energy within the body and makes the problem worse. Acupuncture regulates menstruation and increases blood flow to the uterus, whilst improving the uterine wall, helping endometriosis. All of these factors can greatly improve the chances of conceiving. Acupuncture enhances fertility treatments such as IVF and ICSI, greatly improving their success rates. A British Medical Journal (February 2008) report suggests that acupuncture could improve IVF success rates by up to 65%. This can alleviate common problems such as back or neck pain, headaches, and fatigue. Firstly, you need to identify good posture. Good posture is nothing more than keeping your body in alignment. Good posture while standing or sitting is a straight back, squared shoulders, chin up, chest out, stomach in, feet forward, your hips and knees in a neutral position. To teach your body what it feels like to stand in a good posture, stand with your back against a wall, with the back of your head, your shoulders and your bottom just touching it – this is a good exercise to practice regularly and

• Using a firmer mattress will help by maintaining proper back support. • Sleeping on your back will help keep your shoulders straight, and it is usually more comfortable for the back than sleeping on the stomach. • If you prefer sleeping on your side, try slipping a small, flat pillow between your knees to help keep your spine aligned and straight and ensure your pillow is the correct size to support your head and neck in neutral, ie not bent forward or extended backwards or down, but in a straight line with your spine. • Use a pillow to provide proper support and alignment for the head and shoulders. Don't overdo the pillows—–too many, and your head can be bent in an unnatural position; this will hurt your posture and you'll wake up R feeling stiff and sore.

he late 1990s, early 2000s saw a seismic shift in kitchen ‘couture’. When retired couple Keith and Betty Mason wanted to update their wills they decided to take advantage of an initial free consultation with David Richardson of Richardsons Legal Services. Betty said: “After our meeting with David we explained everything to our son and daughter so

that they were fully aware of our intentions. “We now have real peace of mind about the future, which means we can get on with enjoying our retirement.” Keith spent more than 20 years as a bass guitarist in a dance band and also worked at famous instrument makers Boosey & Hawkes as an engineer for more than 25 years. A keen photographer and avid fan of needle-point and crossstitch, Keith is now in demand as a speaker at groups such as the WI, U3A, Townswomen’s Guilds across Devon and Cornwall. “I have a whole range of illustrated talks from ‘New England in the Fall’ to ‘Making Instruments’,” said Keith. “People seem to like my style…I guess all the years spent in front of audiences with the dance band have helped my confidence.” Former personnel manager Betty is also keen on needlepoint, patchwork quilting and cross-stitch and is a member of Ivybridge U3A. She said: “We would have no hesitation whatsoever in recommending Richardsons Legal Services to other people like us.”

HARRIERS IN GOOD FORM

Erme Valley Harriers runners who took part in the 'Oh My Obelisk! race

l athletics Athletes of Erme Valley Harriers have started the New Year in good form. At the South West Cross Country Championships, at Bicton College in East Devon, Cleo Andrews and Allister Bristow both ran in the senior races and did well. Andrews was the second scorer in the Devon team. In the U17 race, Will Battershill had a tough battle, but came out on top in a thrilling finish. Owen Parkin finished 12th overall and was 3rd Devon scorer. Unfortunately Nathan Brown had to drop out with breathing difficulties. Joe Perry ran well in the U15 boys and Molly Northmore did well in the U13 girls. Olivia Travers was the club’s sole representative in the U11 race. Several athletes tackled the tough ‘Oh My Obelisk!’ at Dawlish, a demanding 11.5 mile cross country race with lots of mud and hills! Tom Packer was the first Harrier home, in a time of 1.25.35, and

was closely followed by Mike Hoskin (1.27.39) and Sarah Hirons (1.29.38). Ken Summers (1.38.47) was 2nd mv60. The Harriers had a good turnout at the January Jaunt 10k in Plymouth, with Matt Brown the club’s first athlete home. Paddy Trinder, Mike Hansen and Richard Stephens all had good runs.
