Children of Manor Primary enjoyed an incredible day at Slapton Sands, where they found out more about Operation Tiger and the D-Day landings. The children recreated landings experienced by the soldiers during WW2, and tried to empathise, in some small way, with what it must have felt like to be in that most unthinkable situation.

From this, the children produced a video using photo and video footage taken during the day. The pupils found out a great deal during the day, and came away with a very powerful reminder of how lucky they are to live in today’s free, peaceful country.

KITCHEN FITTING HELP NEEDED An Ivybridge school which has raised £4,500 to install a teaching kitchen is appealing for to the local community to help with the finishing touches so that it can achieve its aim of having installed over the February half term. The Erme Primary School embarked on an ambitious fundraising drive to fund the kitchen, which will enable children to participate in cooking from a young age and is proven to be a great way to instil healthy eating habits, encourage creativity and provide them with essential life skills and confidence. The school is excited that it has been able to order the new kitchen, but to meet the planned half-term fitting, it is asking for generous local businesses to help with some of the finishing touches. A local electrician is giving up his time to wire in the kitchen, and the local B&Qs have come

together to offer paint. However, they still need warm and hard-wearing flooring and two window blinds to finish off the room. They would also be delighted to hear from any kitchen fitters who may be prepared to give up a little time to help fit the units. The room will be a bespoke kitchen area that will be used for regular after-school cookery clubs – already, there is a waiting list of children wanting to be involved. The teaching kitchen is a really exciting project for the school and an opportunity to provide the school with a great new resource, as well as a useful facility for the wider community – the kitchen will also be made available to other community groups and organisations to use. If you can help in any way, please do get in touch. î If you can help, contact Kay Winstone, PTA Chair, on 01752 691071, kay.winstone@sky.com

As Martin Luther King famously said, “before you finish eating breakfast in the morning you've depended on half the world”. This year’s Fairtrade Fortnight wants people to ‘Stand Up for Farmers, Sit Down for Breakfast’ and think about where their breakfast comes from and the farmers who produce it, both at home and abroad. Ivybridge, a Fairtrade Town, will again be joining in nationwide activities between 29th February and 13th March. If you would like to organise a Fair and local breakfast, contact the Fairtrade group and help put Ivybridge on the Fairtrade Breakfast map. Email Lorna Howell lorna.lukesland@ gmail.com or go along to the Fairtrade planning meeting at 10.30am on Saturday, 30th January, at the Wesley Cafe, Ivybridge Methodist Church. î Look out for details of Fairtrade events in our March issue

SCENT OF SPRING Janet Dungworth, an area demonstrator from Plymouth, filled the Henlake Suite at The Watermark with the scent of spring flowers when she was the guest at Ivybridge Flower Club’s January meeting. Her programme, ‘Flowers for the Soul to Enjoy’, consisted of designs of many different types – naturalistic, modern, and a monochromatic parallel exhibit in shades of red. Janet spent her flower allowance very wisely and the members who won her arrangements in the raffle went home with masses of blooms. Janet explained to members that she had failed her demonstrator’s test at her first attempt, but was not put off and travelled to Surrey to re-take and that time she was lucky. Members were reminded to sign up for classes being run, to decide on their menu choices for the dinner at Turtley Corn Mill and to purchase their tickets for the annual quiz on 29th February at The Rugby Club. The club’s next meeting is on 8th February, at the Henlake Suite, The Watermark at 7.30pm, when the demonstrator is florist Lisa Davies, whose title is ‘Romance’. Visitors are welcome, £6. SOCIAL LUNCH The New Year lunch meeting, including a pre-lunch ‘social hour’, of Ivybridge Probus Club was enjoyed by 29 members. After grace and before lunch was served, President Michael Bailey updated members of recent events. Firstly, he read out a card from David and Sheila Bence thanking members for the good wishes on their move to Suffolk. David was a long time member and regular participant. Next was a request for the go ahead from members to hold the 2016 ladies’ Christmas at Elizabeth House. Peter Cork, events secretary, also announced the Ladies’ Spring Lunch at Hope cove is booked for 13th April.

Lastly, two welcomes were extended by The President. One to Bruce Durrent who was to deliver a talk on shipbuilding after lunch. The other was to Keith Mason who is to become our latest member. Keith was introduced by Paul Jones and brings the membership to 35. After a delicious baked salmon lunch, followed by coffee and dessert, Bruce got into his talk. He started as an indentured shipbuilder in 1960. He took us through the process of building the hull of ships from the times of Romans, Greeks and Vikings. In all cases right up to modern times the process has remained unchanged. The difference now is computerisation. Whereas in the past wooden templates were made to form the shape of the hull and superstructure, computer controlled machines can cut, bend, fit together and weld steel plates to within millimeters. Today’s modern worldwide shipbuilding industry is the upshot from wood to steel. Gone are the deafening riveting machines in favour high-tech welding techniques and materials. Ironically, this technology is rooted in the construction of WWII liberty ships. Bruce ended with the other key shipbuilding development, modern cranes. They can lift up to 10 times their own weight – 500 ton lifts are commonplace with computer control precision to exact locations. Members gave Bruce a warm round of applause, led by a vote of thanks from speaker secretary, Howard Webster. The club’s next meeting will be the first Tuesday in February 2016. coming back to Ivybridge, along with all their old friends, and a few new ones, from the mysterious Land of Oz. The weather in Kansas turns very nasty again and, once more, Dorothy finds herself whisked away from home. Things are very different in Oz and Dorothy has a few problems to solve when she meets up again with the Scarecrow, Lion and Tinman. Together, the friends travel to the Mountains of Darkness, hoping to put things back to ‘normal’ and trying to avoid the clutches of their enemy, the Wicked Witch of the North. Aunt Em is not convinced about these adventures of Dorothy’s. “Your imagination, child”, she says. But Dorothy doesn’t show much imagination in the choice of names for her favourite animals. The last we knew, Toto was a dog … but not this time. Dorothy calls every single one of her pets ‘Toto’! Very confusing! What will she bring this time? Well, what would you take on a dangerous journey? Come along to see our show and see if you guessed correctly! We look forward to seeing you all there – something to look forward to at the start of February half-term. Ivybridge Theatre Company meet at Chapel Place, Fore Street, every Wednesday at 7.30pm. RECOUNTING LIFE IN THE TOWN O OO REMEMBERING THE FALLEN

T

he Ivybridge Parish Magazine provides us with a useful, if selective, view of what was happening 100 years ago. By the end of January 1916 a hundred and three men has attested as ready for military service under Lord Derby’s scheme. Many of them, however, did not pass the medical examination. Additionally, the armlets which were supposed to be worn by these men had not materialised. Chief Petty Officer William Harvey had been home on leave for a few days in February. Harvey had been awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal, an award for gallantry second only to the Victoria Cross. The Parish Magazine commented that “the

Distinguished Conduct Medal - King George V (version 1)

exigencies of the Service” prevented Harvey telling anyone particulars of his “gallant deeds”. On 26th February, James Yabsley married Susannah Grant.

Three men in their early 60s died: Sam Newcombe, Tom Goff and George Henderson. John Hannaford passed away at the “ripe old age” of 86 and was

buried in Widdecombe, where he had farmed. The girls of the Lady Rodgers’ School did very well in the Bishop Phillpots’ Prayer Prize exams and the Girls Friendly Society had been busy with socials and entertainment. £2/2/- (two pounds, two shillings) was donated to Church funds by Harold Alger, and £1/5/by Dr Cooper. A bonus of 1/3 (one shilling and threepence) was paid out to regular subscribers to both the Coal and Clothing Clubs. On 2nd February, junior members of the League of Honour presented a “Fairy Play entitled Sleeping Beauty” and collected £6/12/7 (six pounds, twelve shillings and seven pence), most of which was donated to the Sandbag Fund.

well Take better care of your heart rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, a type of fat that is good for our health. 4. Moving more: This will not only have a great effect on your heart, but also your mind. Head out for a walk or try a new exercise (we know a great place where you can start!) The heart is the most important muscle and just a small amount of intense exercise will keep it functioning properly. Workouts as short as 10 minutes a day can make a huge difference. 5. Work together: When couples work together they can achieve more, having a strong support for each other can help you quit smoking, work out together and change eating habits.

BY CLAIRE MORGAN-HUGHES Devon Fit Camp

February is National Heart Month and organisations and charities like the British Heart Foundation are asking everybody to pay attention to their hearts and start living healthier lifestyles. In the UK, there are an estimated seven million people living with some form of heart disease and every three minutes someone in the UK suffers a heart attack, of which around 30% are fatal. I’m really keen for residents of Ivybridge to use February’s National Heart Month to start introducing some exercise and lifestyle changes and help prevent the spread of heart disease. Most people know someone or have themselves been directly affected by heart disease and the saddest part is a lot of times it is avoidable by changing lifestyle habits. Keeping your heart healthy is the most important thing you can do to help prevent and manage heart disease. A healthy diet reduces the risk of coronary heart disease and prevents weight gain which puts pressure on your heart, the introduction of a healthy diet also helps to prevent further worsening of existing heart disease. It’s NEVER too late to start eating healthily.

Free couples workout To help prevent heart disease, I’ve has come up with a few changes to make to your lifestyle so you can take better care of your heart. 1. Quit smoking: Stopping smoking is the single best thing you can do for your heart health, and the good news is that the risk to your heart health decreases significantly soon after you stop. 2. Reduce salt/processed food: A lot of people believe that by

well Watching your step BY NIKKI SMITH, MCSP South Hams Physio

According to The Telegraph, fitness trackers were the third most popular Christmas present given in 2015. So this year many of us are trying to reach our 10,000 steps per day target by walking that bit extra, or running up and down stairs to achieve over 10 sets, all for the visual reward on the ‘app’ or buzz of the device on your wrist! It’s a craze many are getting involved in and it’s easy to see why when we take a look at a few of the benefits of walking: • Good for your health – it has numerous benefits including reducing your risk of diabetes, coronary heart disease, high cholesterol, stroke. • Older people who walk six miles or more per week are more likely to have a reduced risk of dementia.

diabetes. Which is good news for those of us that want to reduce high impact on joints. Regular walking gives your joints a good workout, increases your muscle strength and can help to keep your bones strong. It is an excellent choice of exercise if you already have joint problems because it doesn’t put much impact on them. Before hitting the streets consider

your walking posture: Choose shoes with proper arch support, a firm heel and thick flexible soles to cushion your feet and absorb shock. Ideally you should keep your head up and look forward, not at the ground. Your neck, shoulders and back should be relaxed, and try swinging your arms freely so there is a gentle rotation in your body. Try tightening your stomach muscles slightly (pull your belly button into your spine) and keeping your back straight. Aim to walk smoothly, rolling your foot from heel to toe. Walk at a pace that encourages you to take deeper breaths, enjoy it and don’t forget to wear your fitness tracker!

well Fallen out of love with your pelvic floor? Try physiotherapy! BY HELENA COSTIFF Cornwood Physiotherapy

‘Tis the season of romance but many women struggle to regard their pelvic area with any affection. Physiotherapy can offer straightforward, but often highly effective, solutions to pelvic problems such as bladder and bowel incontinence, prolapse, sexual pain – without the need for surgery or medication. The only potential side effect is improvement! Many people worry about what seeing a women’s health physiotherapist might involve. We are specially trained to perform internal examinations to assess the muscles and function of the pelvic area, but this is never compulsory and many patients derive significant improvements from education and advice alone. I am passionate about promoting

women’s health at all stages of life – knowledge is power! So, with cupid in mind, here are five top tips for showing your pelvic floor and organs a little tender, loving care... 1) Breathe! Breathing deeply allows your diaphragm to move efficiently up and down, effectively giving your pelvic organs a massage and improving circulation and digestion. 2) In the words of Disney; Let it go! Relaxing your pelvic floor is as important as tightening it – don’t be constantly “tensing”. 3) Sit on the toilet! Avoid hovering. Sitting helps your pelvic floor to relax properly, reducing constipation and promoting effective bladder emptying. 4) Have a look. Know what your “bits” look like. Breast self-examination has become the norm and so should genital examination. “Knowing your normal”, so you

can recognise if something changes, could save your life. 5) Ignore people who say that leaking when you cough/jump/ laugh is a normal part of having babies/getting older/being a woman. It’s not. Never has been. Live, love, laugh – without leaks. To find out how physiotherapy

well

Everyone worries, sometimes. Worry is part of what makes us human, part of that wonderful ability to imagine what possible futures may be like. In fact, a brief period of worry after something difficult has happened can make us feel better and help us work through the possibilities for the future, and therefore plan effectively. However, if we worry for too long, or too much about something, it can spiral out of control – sometimes to the point where it can have a devastating impact on our mental and physical health. It can stop us performing at our best and doing things in life that we’d really like to. Even the greatest of people can suffer in these ways. Sir Winston Churchill once said: “When I look back on all these worries, I remember the story of the old man who said on his deathbed that he had a lot of trouble in his life, most of which had never happened.” Tiffany Armitage is a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist who can work with you to break the cycle of worrying, to help you think more positively and calmly about your future. Dog microchipping - new laws 6th April, 2016 A microchip makes it much easier to reunite a dog with its owner. It will be compulsory for all dogs in England to be fitted with microchips by 6th April, 2016, following the gov.uk consultation in 2012. This will help tackle the growing problem of stray dogs, and will help to reunite owners with lost or stolen pets more quickly. It will relieve the burden on animal charities and local authorities and protect the welfare of dogs by promoting responsible dog ownership. Local authorities and the police will not be checking whether responsibly-owned dogs are microchipped, as they do not have the time for this, however, if a dog without a microchip comes

£1 MILLION FUNDING TO SUPPORT YOUNG ATHLETES Talented athletes have until 20th February to apply for financial awards of up to £1,250 Applications are now open for talented young sports men and women from Ivybridge and the surrounding area to apply for a share of a £1million funding pot, which aims to help young sporting stars realise their dreams. The funding is thanks to Tone Leisure in partnership with the GLL Sport Foundation (GSF), the largest independent athlete support programme in the UK, operated by charitable social enterprise, GLL. To be eligible for a grant, young sportsmen and women must live or be in education in a partnership where GLL or its partners operate; or be affiliated to a sports club that has a training base at a GLL or partner operated sport and leisure venue.

Each of the successful applicants will benefit from financial and/or training awards. Financial awards of up to £1,250 will support athletes associated travel, competition and equipment costings during the next 12 months. Recipients will also benefit from sports performance sup-

port and training awards that allow free sporting access to more than 200 sport and leisure venues managed by GLL and partners across the UK. The programme works in partnership with sport national governing bodies through the national charity SportsAid to support the next

generation of sporting talent. With the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games approaching, the programme is supporting athletes who will look to compete at these games including ambassadors Tom Daley, Dina AsherSmith, Aled Davies and Lutalo Muhammad. The programme is equally focussed on athletes that are aiming for the 2020 and 2024 Games and with over 70% of award recipients being aged under 21, the focus is very much on the next generation of sporting talent. The GSF was launched in 2008 by Sally Gunnell, OBE. Since then, the programme has provided over 8,700 athlete awards with support worth over £4.9million to athletes across, England, Wales and Northern Ireland. î For further details about the scheme and to apply, go to www.gllsportfoundation.org Applications for 2016 awards are open until 20th February 2016 The Ivybridge magazine

What is a Home Protection Trust ? l What does it protect? l How does it work? l What other assets can it protect? David Richardson, founder of Richardsons Legal Services

First, we create a Trust which we call a Home Protection Trust as that is the main asset most people want to protect. The Trust is a very special document and drafting a Trust Deed is a restricted legal occupation which our specialist Trust Barristers are able to do. Once it is created we transfer your property into the Trust where it is ring fenced and immediately protected from all unforeseen eventualities. The word unforeseen is crucial. We all know that one day we could run into financial difficulties for no fault of our own, or go into a care home, or cause an accident and be liable for a negligence claim, but provided these things are not anticipated at the time of transfer into trust they are

absolutely protected. Most people want to hand their home down to their children one day and as we get older we start to worry that our children or whoever are our beneficiaries might not inherit, for no fault of ours. A Home Protection Trust has many more advantages. Property in Trust does not require Probate after we are gone. It is available

instantly to our beneficiaries saving the stress of applying for Probate, a long wait of months before anything can be done, and saving Probate costs which can be substantial if a professional is appointed to obtain Probate. Another benefit is that property in Trust cannot be lost to an aggrieved relative, as it cannot be challenged under the 1975 Inher-

itance Act, which can happen when property is left solely by Will and not protected by a Trust. Other assets can be put into the Trust such as cash savings, shares etc, but not ISAs as they have an individual tax advantage to you. Brilliant Burrator

Year 4 Isla examines the information plaque and ruins of Longstone Manor

Year 3 and 4 pupils at Manor Primary School recently visited Burrator Reservoir as part of their Geography topic on rivers. The children enjoyed a quiz and a talk at Burrator’s new hands-on Discovery Centre, where they found out how a reservoir works, and also learnt how to identify the wildlife that is attracted to this popular beauty spot. Afterwards, the children took part in a woodland walk around the reservoir to view the two dams and see Longstone Manor, an old Medieval manor house that still remains at the water’s edge, even after the valley was abandoned and submerged. Despite the damp start, it was a wonderfully informative and exciting day and really inspired the children to find out more about water back in the classroom.

At the end of this month you will notice the Lambing and Bird Nesting signs (above) appearing over the moor. This is a reminder to dog owners to please keep dogs under close control. Every year we still get complaints from local landowners and farmers regarding livestock attacks by dogs. In addition, ground nesting birds are very easily disturbed so please consider your walking routes during this time. We are looking for helpers on the 28th February for a working party at Burrator. We will be clearing an archaeological site and any ‘hands- on’ help is greatly appreciated. If you would like to regularly receive information about our volunteering opportunities please follow the link below which allows you to sign up to our regular newsletters www.dartmoor.gov.uk/aboutus/news/e-news. As you have gathered by now we are always asking for help! We always have fun on these events and as people keep coming back that must be a good sign – nothing to do with chocolates and cakes!!! If you have a particular interest in Public Rights of Way and like working independently then let us know as you may be interested in becoming a community paths volunteer. After initial training you may enjoy checking local paths and undertaking maintenance duties including keeping paths clear of vegetation and helping with signage. Give in touch if you would like to find out more… See you outside.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Ranger service first hand, or think you may need their help please, contact them on: Ella – 07711104546 / ebriens@dartmoor.gov.uk Andrea – 07720509270 / aroberts@dartmoor.gov.uk

GREAT BRITAIN CALL-UP FOR ALYSSA

A student from Ivybridge Community College has received a call-up for Great Britain’s Senior Elite Underwater Hockey Ladies team. Eighteen-year-old Alyssa Oates (above) will be Great Britain’s youngest player when she competes at the World Championships in South Africa. She will also be one of the youngest players at the 2016 Championships. Alyssa made her international debut at the age of 12 playing for England under 19s, and has continued to train hard and fight off stiff competition to reach an Elite level and be selected for the GB squad. Alyssa trains at the Plymouth Life Centre, where she plays alongside her dad, who introduced her to the sport at the age of seven. Very proud to be playing for her country, Alyssa was delighted that she made the Elite Ladies’ team, something she has always aspired to do.

BATTERSHILL AND PERRY IN GOOD FORM Erme Valley Harriers’ Will Battershill finished 2015 in fine style by winning the under-20 men’s title at the South West Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships at Bicton College. Battershill, running for Devon, clocked 33.06 for the tough course, with Wells’ Philip Bridge second in 34.51. Battershill also helped Devon to the under-20 team title. There was also success at Bicton for Battershill’s Erme Valley team

mate Cleo Perry (pictured above), who clocked 26.40 and was third senior women behind Avon’s Charlotte Green and Cornwall’s Emma Stepto. She was also first in the over-35 category. This year has started relatively quietly, but the Harrriers’ were well represented in the Oh My Oblelish! – a tough 11-mile multiterrain event, with lots of hill and mud! Jean Baptiste Rouvelin was the first Harrier home in 35th place and closely followed by

Russ Mogridge in 44th place. At the January Jaunt 10K in Plymouth Richard Stephens was the first Harrier home. The conditions were extremely wet for the Westward League Cross Country meeting at Westward Ho! Nathan Brown took second in the under 17 boys’ race, whilst Cleo Perry was second in the senior women’s race and first over-40. î For more information go to www.ermevallyharriers.co.uk
