RECYCLING HEROES NEED YOUR VOTE Local people and groups who go the extra mile to help people recycle have been shortlisted for the Recycle Devon People’s Choice Hero Award, and now they need your vote to help them be crowned winners. Sustainable South Brent Community Composting Project’s Marsh Community Compost Site (pictured) has been nominated for the brilliant work it does. The project is open for villagers to bring any amount of their green waste, which they can exchange for compost. The fantastic project manages many tonnes of garden waste and provides a vital service to people who cannot easily access their local recycling centre. The project also brings people together and creates vital links within the community.

Another nominee is David Banks, who heads up Refurnish Devon. It supports low income families across the region through a chain of shops offering reused furniture to those in need. As well as helping the local community in this way, its social aims include

LET’S TALK ABOUT DEMENTIA A seminar about supporting people with dementia in our communities is being held this month. Let’s Talk About Dementia In Our Communities, organised by the Four Rivers Dementia Alliance, is on Friday, 2nd February at The Watermark in Ivybridge. If you want to find out how to support people with dementia, or let others know about what you are doing or need, or have some good community ideas, then you are encouraged to go along. The event, which runs from 9.30am until 3pm, is open to everyone – organisations, individuals, groups and carers. Attendance is free – thanks to sponsorship from town and parish funds – and a buffet lunch will be provided. i Let’s Talk About Dementia In Our Communities – Friday, 2nd February, The Watermark, Ivybridge, 9.30am-3pm. n editor’s letter Welcome to our seventh anniversary issue! We thought it was time for a freshen up, so our regular readers are sure to notice a few changes, not least the front cover and the shortened name – imag. The little ‘i’ still stands for Ivybridge, but also interesting and informative, which is what we endeavour to be. Welcome also to our new readers in Yealmpton, Modbury, Sparkwell and Lutton. We hope you look forward to receiving the magazine through your door every month. The magazine aims to celebrate our area and your stories. If you are involved with a local club or group, are organising an event, raising money for charity, or have done something amazing, we’d love to hear from you. We are always happy to support local good causes, community groups and charities with coverage in the magazine. If you run a local business, the magazine is a great way to reach local people. The emphasis on interesting and informative local content makes imag distinctly different from other titles covering this area, so get in touch to see how we can help build your business. We hope you enjoy reading this issue and here’s to the next seven years.

FOOD BANK THANKS

SEARCH FOR A STAR

Ivybridge and District Food Bank would like to say a huge “thank you” to all those who collected and donated food for them over the Christmas period. They received a record amount of donations and were able to help a record number of families, all thanks to the generosity of the community. People are continuing to give generously, but organisers stress that they cannot use out-ofdate food, packets already opened, unusual foods or those containing alcohol. It is difficult to dispose of such foods, so they are asking people to check the dates on foods before donating.

As part of its 10th anniversary celebrations, The Watermark in Ivybridge is on the look out for the best local talent. It is searching for up-and-coming artists to compete in a talent contest and find out, Has Ivybridge Got Talent? Singers, groups, musicians and dancers will be invited to perform in heats to find new local talent, with the judges picking a winner who will support Joey The Lips on The Watermark 10th Anniversary Stage at the Lions’ Fun Day on Saturday, 30th June. i For more details see page 21

news WORLD CLASS Four students from Ivybridge Community College have been praised for the way they helped organise a prestigious school awards ceremony. Year 13 students Olivia Brown, Hannah Doe and Adam Northcott, and Year 12 Peter Bull impressed those involved with the event with their “extraordinarily impressive” conduct, professionalism and maturity. The four were invited to project manage the World Class Schools Award Ceremony at Churchill College, Cambridge University, and certainly made an impression on those attendng. “It was the general consensus from those involved in the event, who are difficult to impress, that the conduct, professionalism and maturity of the Ivybridge students were extraordinarily impressive,” said Miranda Perry, World Class Schools Quality Mark Award co-director. “Dr Jerry Toner, director of studies for Classics at

Adam Northcott, Lucy Ryder, Hannah Doe, Miranda Perry, Olivia Brown, Peter Bull and Dr Jerry Toner

Churchill College, asked where we had got ‘these exemplary students’ from?” As well as the four students helping to organise the event, Year 10 Lucy Ryder attended as she was one of the finalists of the World

Class School Essayists. She received an honourable mention for her essay. Year 12 students Ben Conroy and Ben Tuckley, Olivia and Hannah Doe, as well as ICC deputy principal Mrs Taylor received their

Qualified Assessor Awards. During the evening, the students received a personal tour of the Churchill College by Dr Toner, who also gave them an invaluable insight into the application process for entry to Cambridge University.

THE MARRIAGE COURSE A course to help married couples strengthen their relationship is starting in Ivybridge. Run by Mark and Carolyn Lawrence, leaders at Ivybridge Methodist Church, the seven session course is open to all married couples, whether they have been together a few months or many years, as well as to couples living together. You don’t have to be a Christian or church goer to attend, and your marriage certainly doesn’t have to be in any trouble. It is for any couple who wants to work at and invest in their relationship. The sessions run once a month on Wednesday evenings. Each session does follow on from the previous one, so it is best to attend as many as possible. Each evening should be like a ‘date night’ and begin with a meal as a couple, followed by a DVD presentation and then guided discussion,

GOVERNORS WANTED Woodlands Park Primary School is looking to appoint a new chair of Governors and a community governor. CARERS SUPPORT A new carers’ support service has been launched by Devon County Council. Building on current services, such as the close links with GPs, the single number helpline and having local support staff available, ‘peer support’ will be central to the service, with more opportunities for carers to support each other. There is also more help for those caring for people with specific and complex care needs and an increased focus on helping people understand and ‘navigate the system’. i Devon Carers helpline - 03456 434 435. feature TRAIN CHAMPIONS

A group which campaigns for better rail services to and from Ivybridge is inviting local people to join it. Ivybridge Rail Users Group (IRUG), set up in 2004, is a voluntary group, supported by the town council, and its main aims are to give local rail users a voice and to lobby for improved rail services to and from Ivybridge. IRUG is holding its Annual General Meeting on 1st March at 7.30 at Ivybridge Town Hall – everyone is welcome to go along to meet the group and share their views on the issues. Currently, IRUG is exploring the idea of rebranding Ivybridge station as a ‘parkway’ station and an integrated transport hub,

especially in view of the new town being built at Sherford, and numerous other housing developments around Ivybridge and to the east of Plymouth. The group campaigned successfully against cuts proposed after the takeover of the franchise by Great Western in 2006, and also for a number of direct London trains to include stops at Ivybridge from 2009. IRUG has established good links with Great Western Railway (GWR), and invite staff to its meetings; IRUG members attend TravelWatch SouthWest and GWR Passenger Panel-West meetings. Every summer, the group puts together a ‘Days Out from

Ivybridge’ leaflet with ideas for day trips by train in Devon and Cornwall, and they compile a handy Ivybridge mini-timetable every month. For those who may not have caught a train from Ivybridge, although the station isn’t staffed, you can buy tickets on the train – or at your destination station – at no extra cost. A £10 Devon and Cornwall Railcard gets you a third off most fares, too. The station has a large free car park, step-free and well-lit access to both platforms, and electronic information points. Currently, only 20 trains a day stop at Ivybridge on weekdays (compared, for example, with 70 at Totnes), including five direct

services to or from London. Some extra train services for Ivybridge have been promised by GWR from early 2019. Making more use of the services already available is the best way to persuade the train company to stop more trains at Ivybridge, so the group urges people to use the station whenever they can! The Department for Transport is currently consulting on the future of rail services under the GWR franchise. The closing date for responses is 21st February – www.gov.uk/government/ consultations/great-western-railfranchise. IRUG will be responding to the consultation too. i irugivybridge.weebly.com or call

STOWFORD PAPER MILL It is now over four years since Stowford Paper Mill closed, with its business transferred to a sister mill located in Aberdeen. On 21st November, 2013, the very last reel of paper came off No.2 paper machine, not only marking an end to paper manufacturing in Ivybridge after 226 years of continuous operation, but also closing an important chapter in the history of the town. The prosperity of Ivybridge is inextricably linked to the paper mill, which provided stable employment for generations of its residents. A paper mill was first established on the site in 1787 when a Plymouth businessman, William Dunsterville, purchased Stowford Estate. By 1796 the mill had a new owner following the sale to Henry Rivers, proprietor of the London Inn in Ivybridge. He in turn leased the mill to Francis Fincher. The first paper making machine was installed in 1837, transforming paper production. The mid-nineteenth century marked the golden age for the paper mill, under the ownership of John Allen. He purchased the mill in 1849, and, with his two sons, Edward and John, ran the mill for over 60 years. It is debatable that, without their investment and enterprise, the mill would have survived the second half of the century. In 1910, following the death of Edward Allen, the paper mill was sold to a syndicate, of which the Clapperton family, who already owned a paper mill in Oxfordshire, were prominent members. For the next 14 years they invested heavily in the mill, despite a major fire, the outbreak of WWI and the difficult trading conditions which followed. In 1924 Portals, the manufacturer of banknotes for the Bank of England, purchased the mill. Thus began another notable chapter in its history, with the introduction of security papers, which remained an important part of the mill’s business operations up until its closure. In 1925, Portals were awarded the contract for the supply of postage stamp paper and Stowford Paper Mill continued to supply stamp base paper until 1968, when British stamps dispensed with watermarks. By 1930, Wiggins Teape had purchased the mill and the business

continued to flourish. It was now manufacturing British postal order paper and pension and allowances paper. Additionally, it was producing all birth, marriage and death certificate paper bearing the General Register Office watermark. In 1991, Wiggins Teape merged with a French paper corporation Arjomari Prioux to become ArjoWiggins. The announcement of the impending closure of the paper mill, when

it appeared in the press in September 2012, prompted action within the local community to preserve its rich history. From numerous visits to the mill, countless old documents, scrapbooks and production records were rescued and remain with the group’s archivists. While the closure of the paper mill was a catalyst for the formation of the Ivybridge Mill Archives Group, its researchers have now shifted their focus to many other topics of

historical interest and the group’s archives continue to grow. The new name of Ivybridge Heritage & Archives Group reflects this expansion of research. i A much more detailed history

n Ivybridge Flower Club THE SHOW WENT ON Due to the sudden illness of the booked demonstrator, Elaine Reynolds, two members stepped in to demonstrate five beautiful arrangements. Hilary Newcombe and Janet Weston hurried around to find last-minute flowers and foliage so that they could provide members with wonderful colours and designs, including an arrangement in a bag, a Hogarth curve and a parallel and table decoration. Members greatly appreciated their talent and skills. The club dinner is on 12th February, so the next meeting at The Watermark will be on Monday, 12th March, with area Vivienne Thompson’s ‘anticipation’ demonstration. All welcome – visitors £6. Also in March, the club is holding a quiz evening at Ivybridge Rugby Club on Monday, 26th March, starting at 7pm. Tickets are £8 to include a buffet. i Contact Hilary on 01752 892647 for more information about the club

n Ivybridge Probus Club NEW YEAR, NEW VENUE The annual Christmas ladies lunch brought Ivybridge Probus Club’s 2017 to a successful close. Held at the new venue of the Moorland Garden Hotel, it was a great success, and members voted to return there again this Christmas. Everything about the occasion was faultless – except perhaps the extraordinary tie worn by Mike Holman, who won the prize for the most outrageous neckware. Thanks to Keith and Anne Kiddell for the time they put in to finding such a great venue. The club’s new year got under way with the monthly lunch on the 9th January. The meeting was held at Wrangaton Golf Club, which will be the permanent venue for 2018. Attendance was badly hit, mostly by an assortment of bugs which seemed to be going around. The talk was by David Halpin, a 10

ANTARCTIC SIGHTS The February general meeting of Ivybridge U3A will be held on Monday, 19th February, starting at 2pm at The Watermark The speaker will be Mathew Upton, whose talk is called ‘Antarctica – a description of a research visit to Halley Base’. In January 1997, Mathew travelled by ship from Uruguay to the British Antarctic Survey Halley base on the Brunt Ice Shelf in the Weddell Sea. The reason for his visit was to set up a research

laboratory that would be used to detect human contamination of the pristine environment surrounding the base. Mathew will touch briefly on the science side of the trip, but

mostly he will talk about the sights and animals that he saw on the journey to the base, and then back out to the Falkland Islands where he left the ship.

retired consultant from Torbay Hospital, who put before members a (conspiracy?) theory that Dr David Kelly, of Iraq war fame, did not commit suicide but was killed. An interesting proposition, which divided the attending membership, it demonstrated that even 15 years on, there are clearly strongly held views about the circumstances leading up to the Iraq war and the actions surrounding it.

n Ivybridge Theatre Company CARROLL’S CLASSIC Preparations are well underway as Ivybridge Theatre Company gets set to travel into Wonderland for its next production. Join Alice on 13th, 14th and 15th April as she falls down the rabbit hole into a land full of lively characters and perilous danger. Will she find the White Rabbit? Will he find his handkerchief? Will the Mad Hatter ever get his watch working? With two evening shows and two matinée performances at The Watermark, there will be plenty of opportunities to find out. The whole family is invited to enjoy this masterful retelling of

Lewis Carroll’s classic Alice in Wonderland. The show is sure to be fun for all ages, just remember to keep your head! n The Arts Society NAME CHANGE A society renowned for its high-quality lectures and presentations from national and international experts has had a change of name to better reflect the wide ranging subject areas it covers. In line with the national change, the local branch of the National Association of Decorative and Fine Art Societies is now called The Arts Society Kingsbridge. Meetings are held in Kingsbridge Methodist Hall on the

last Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm, repeated the following Thursday morning at 10.30am. Meetings take place from September to June. Visitors are always welcome for a suggested donation of £8. You don’t need any previous knowledge of art or history, just an interest. The title of fine arts could give the impression of subjects being limited to paintings and antique furniture, when in fact lecturers interpret this freely, with talks about the history of golf, social history as seen through silver table wear, Turner and his time in Devon, foreigners in London and many more. The change of title to include all arts has meant the subjects can now be even more wide ranging. As well as monthly meetings, there are also visits to places of interest in the South West, often not normally opened to the public. Members of the local association are also entitled to join ‘study days’ organised by other areas, anywhere in the country and abroad, further broadening subjects and their appeal. i For more information, visit

But what about getting to a hospital appointment at say Derriford or Mount Gould? Getting there by public transport is possible, but pretty difficult and time consuming. This is reality for many, especially the elderly, infirm, and those unable to drive any longer for health reasons. The problem is many times worse if you live in one of the surrounding rural villages like Cornwood, Ugborough or Sparkwell – here there is very little and infrequent public transport. The “ring and ride” service (strictly speaking IDCTA – Ivy-

bridge and District Community Transport Association, a registered charity) has been providing a means for the elderly and infirm to attend appointments at the hospital, or the doctors, opticians, chiropodist or stroke support etc for many years, and covers not only Ivybridge but all the surrounding settlements. The Community Car Scheme operates similarly to a pre-booked taxi (but is considerably more affordable), and can be booked by calling the association’s office in The Watermark between 9am and 12.30pm on weekdays. The service relies entirely on voluntary drivers, who use their own cars and give up their time to help others. Ring and Ride is currently looking for more people to help by becoming volunteer drivers. Being a driver is a great opportunity to give something back to your local community by helping the elderly and sometimes the most socially isolated. You would be paid a mileage rate of 45 pence, which is not subject to income tax, and you do not have to commit to a regular schedule – you can do as little or as much as you wish. To find out how you could make a difference as a volunteer driver, call Alex or Judith on 01752 690444 (9am to 12.30pm weekdays) i ringandride.net

We use the highly-acclaimed Montessori Method to ensure we bring out the very best in every child. Our nurseries are small enough to enable us to deliver a personal and individual approach to your child’s development, but big enough to allow your child to engage with others and learn important social skills. Our nurseries have a variety of outdoor spaces and are in great locations, enabling us to take the children on walks, trips and visits.

Barbara Harris says goodbye to Manor School

GOODBYE MRS HARRIS After nearly 30 years teaching at Manor Primary School, Barbara Harris retired at the end of last term. The school held a special assembly, featuring emotional speeches, fond memories, gifts and good wishes. This was followed by a tea party for friends and col-

leagues past and present, and a few past pupils, too. Mrs Harris has left many lasting legacies at the school. She started the first ecology club at the school and dug the school pond, which is still a brilliantly fun and educational resource in use today. The staff, parents and pupils

bought Mrs Harris a digital sewing machine so that she can continue to create wonderful crafts and artwork at home. Mrs Harris surprised the children by buying them something, too – five large fruit trees to be planted in the school grounds, and a beautiful piece of artwork.

n Woodlands WARBURTONS BAKE Children at Woodlands Park Primary School were given a healthy eating and practical food workshop courtesy of Warburtons. They learnt about healthy eating and food hygiene, as well as about the history of Warburtons. Donning hairnets and aprons, the children shaped dough, which was then baked in time for them to take it home. Warburtons also kindly donated lots of Warburtons goodies to the class. twitter: @Ivybridgemag \\ facebook: @TheIvybridgemagazine \\ theivybridgemagazine.co.uk \\ 07516 539573 | 01752 426522

GUIDE DOG VISIT Stowford School’s Year 1 classes were treated to a very special visit by Jo Woodcock and her six-year-old guide dog, Eunice, who helps to keep Jo safe when she goes out. The children heard about the life of a guide dog, which begins at six-weeks-old when they go and live with a puppy walker. Here they learn many useful skills such as going to the shops, travelling on public transport and even going to a firework display. The children discovered that Eunice’s puppy walker trained her until she was a year old, when she then ‘graduated’ to guide dog training school where she learnt how to cross roads safely and keep her owner safe while using the stairs. By two years old, Eunice was ready to be paired with Jo. Jo explained how Eunice knows that when in her guide dog harness – which lets the general public know Eunice is a working dog and is therefore allowed in shops and other places – she is in ‘work mode’ and showed the children how she responds to different commands. Year 1 teacher, Hannah Brown said: “The children were captivated by Eunice and Jo and were amazed at the amount of training a guide dog has to undertake before they are ready to be paired with an owner. They especially enjoyed stroking Eunice at the end of the session.” THE IVYBRIDGE MAGAZINE

Carmen receiving a signed copy of I Think I Murdered Miss from Billy

AUTHOR VISIT Key Stage 2 classes at Stowford School were treated to a visit from Billy Bob Buttons, the award-winning children’s author. Billy Bob Buttons (the pen name of Edward Hugh Trayer) has written 13 children’s novels, including Felicity Brady and the Wizard’s Bookshop, which was long-list-

ed for the International Rubery Book Award in 2011. In 2012, Tor Assassin Hunter was runner-up in the UK People’s Book Prize and I Think I Murdered Miss won the UK People’s Book Prize in 2014. Other titles include The Gullfoss Legends, Muffin Monster and Drowning Fish.

Billy’s literacy workshop to Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 had a balance of helpful writing tips and humorous anecdotes, which will surely inspire many children in their future writing and story planning. The children were captivated throughout and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

ECO WARRIORS Emily Mitchell, the newest member of staff at Holbeton Primary School, has been busy planning a host of initiatives with the school’s group of enthusiastic eco warriors. Emily is passionate about ensuring the environment is treasured to pass on to the next generation, fitting right in with the school’s outdoor education ethos. She has already organised outreach work with the RSPB, and has started an application for the Green Flag. Emily also plans various ‘clean up’ events. She said: “It is so important that all our children understand the effects our actions have on the wider world. We are so lucky that our school has such beautiful grounds, with access to such wonderful local areas like the orchard, the wood and Mothecombe Beach. They understand and want to ensure that we need to keep it special. It is so heartwarming to see how enthusiastic and passionate they are already.” 01752 426522 | 07516 539573 \\ theivybridgemagazine.co.uk \\ facebook: @TheIvybridgemagazine \\ twitter: @Ivybridgemag

wellbeing n Abbey Road Podiatry

PAINFUL HARD SKIN ON YOUR FEET? Would you like to be comfortable again? We can help you says Jackie Thomas of Abbey Road Podiatry

As you get older many people lose the fatty pads under the heels and balls of your feet. This removes the natural cushioning effect and increases the pressure on the skin from the bones underneath. A normal podiatry treatment will painlessly remove the hard skin. This is made easier if you treat your feet regularly with a Ureabased cream – like the Ureka footcare cream or the Ureka heel balm – because the urea actually breaks down the keratin in the skin, making it softer and more supple. We also offer Medi Pedis, which can follow up your normal treatment with a soothing massage, Prendé orb wax treatment or a range of spa treatments. They will help in making your feet baby soft and smooth again. Please ask for details or check out our website. i Jackie Thomas BSc (Hons) is a fully

n RICHARDSONS LEGAL SERVICES By Monica Salvioni Reeder – Operations & Client Services at Richardsons Legal Services

PROTECTING ASSETS A good way to think of a lifetime trust is to think of it as a lawyer-created “safety deposit box” into which you can place your home, savings, stocks and shares, life insurance and/or any other assets that you wish to keep safe as you go about your daily life. While in the box, you still have full use of the contents and can add to them, sell them, replace them, borrow from them or pass them down to your family as you wish. However, if a third party or outside body tries to claim them, they cannot get access and cannot force you to give them the key. After your death, the safety deposit box (the trust) and its contents pass down to the beneficiaries that you have chosen to receive them and they can

either carry on using the trust themselves, enjoying the same protection that you had, or they can bring it to an end and share the contents out. The reason that a trust can safeguard your assets and property so effectively is that the law regards the trust itself as a completely separate entity to you and, if the property in which you live and the investments from which you receive an income are (in the eyes of the law) owned by someone other than you, it is very difficult for anyone to take them from you. It is also important to note that trusts have been used for hundreds of years to safeguard assets and property. They are used every day by banks, insurance companies, local authorities

and even the government itself. This means that the only way to prevent them being used by ordinary people to protect their own assets and property is to completely rewrite the law.

FIRST-TIME BUYERS DID YOU KNOW... first-time buyers in England, Wales and Northern Ireland no longer pay Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) on residential properties at the value of £300,000 or less. First-time buyers purchasing a residential property for between £300,000 and £500,000 will pay 0% on the first £300,000 and 5% on the remaining balance, saving them up to £5,000 compared to the previous SDLT rules. Any first-time buyers purchasing for over £500,000 will not be entitled to any relief and will need to

pay SDLT at the normal rate. A first-time buyer is defined as an individual or individuals who have never owned an interest in a residential property in the UK or anywhere else in the world and who intend to occupy the property as their main residence. The change is designed to help first-time buyers get on the property ladder by reducing the upfront costs. For example, under the old SDLT rules, a first-time buyer purchasing at a price of £200,000 would have paid £1,500, but with the new rules this money can

As DNPA rangers, our work involves mostly being out on Dartmoor trying to do the best for the people who live, work and visit there. We also work to ensure that Dartmoor remains a special place, with its conservation and rich archaeological history remaining intact for future generations. The job is sometimes the best in the world. What’s not to love about being outside in this stunning landscape, meeting and advising all sorts of people from all walks of life? There are times, however, when it can take on a more sombre role – for instance, dealing with an injured sheep attacked by dogs, or trying not to get abused or run over by illegal scramble bikes who are churning up the moor. We also work closely with the police and other emergency services across the moor. Before Christmas, rangers were present at the River Dart helping to deal with a tragic canoeing fatality. Over the Christmas period, again on the River Dart, we helped police recover a car which had left the road and crashed into the river. We were also reporting on and monitoring a large-scale rave being held in Fernworthy Forest

on Boxing day, with over 1,000 people in attendance. More recently, we joined the search in and around Ivybridge for a missing person. Our job roles (and contracts) are very clear about what our responsibilities are, but we tend to get involved in most things because of our contacts, our knowledge and our willingness to help. Some of the recent requests I have had include: “we have found a lost dog – can you sort it out?”; “can you clear that tree that has fallen across the road?”; “can you sort out the car which is blocking the field entrance?”; “can you sort out that fly tipping?”; “can you take away my dog poo bag?”; and, “can you remove that homeless man living in a tent?”. None of the above are anything to do with rangers, but through my contacts and knowledge I was able to advise or sort out most of these things. We will always try to help where we can. People often wax lyrical about what a fantastic job we have (followed very quickly with the question “what is it you actually do?”)... I couldn’t agree more with them about our jobs – it is fantastic!

TRY RUNNING It’s a quiet time at present on the race scene, but four Erme Valley Harrier athletes completed the January Jaunt 10K in Plympton on a bitterly cold and windy day. Simon Swift (42.34) was the first Harrier home and was followed by Russ Mogridge (43.00), Katy Mogridge (43.00) and Phil Warren (64.14). At the Oh My Obelisk in Dawlish, three athletes survived this tough race, which was extended to a half marathon this year. Ken Summers (2.10.30) did well and was closely followed by Craig MacAlpine (2.08.14). Carol Hansen (2.43.27) also had a fine run. This quieter part of the running calendar has been a good opportunity for new chairman Mark Livermore to reflect what he wishes to achieve for the club. Building on the hard work and successes already achieved by the club, Mark is keen that the Harriers attract runners from all abilities and age ranges this year, including beginners embarking on couch to 5k training, people just wanting to improve fitness and well-being, as well provide specific skill sessions for people who wish to run quicker and or further. The Harriers’ TRY Running Group is for complete beginners and meets in the coffee shop at Ivybridge Leisure Centre on Monday mornings at 9.30am. Formed in July 2014, the motto is ‘every accomplishment starts with the decision to TRY’. This small group has three leaders and has helped many individuals to accomplish their goals, whether it be their first 3k, 5k, 10k race or a social group to run with for general fitness and wellbeing. Sessions are tailored to suit everyone’s ability but most importantly to develop running at your own pace. The mixed sessions are free for adults and can be booked through runtogether.co.uk/groups/ The main club night is weekly on Tuesdays, meeting at Ivybridge Rugby Club at 6pm. Various group runs are arranged to help improve either speed or longer distance running. Sessions are aimed to be completed by 7:30pm. 34

There are changing and shower facilities, as well as a bar and tea/coffee making facilities should anyone wish to stay behind for a chat afterwards. On Wednesday evenings at 5.45pm there is another session aimed at total beginners to those looking to improve their performance.

Meeting at Ivybridge Community College sports reception, runs are tailored to everyone who turns up. This session now incorporates a ‘Couch to 5k’ group. If more speed is your aim, the club’s Thursday night session at 7pm is for you. The group meets at the rugby club and welcomes intermediate and above runners who are looking to improve their race times. The Harriers has had a thriving junior section for over 30 years, which meets on a Thursday evening at Ivybridge Community College. It is split into two sessions, the first, from 5.45-7pm, is for young athletes (8-11 years) to develop a wide range of athletic skills in running, jumping and throwing. The second session, for athletes from 11-18 years, starts at 7pm for an hour until 8pm. It is a more specialised session to help to develop athletes with their preferred discipline. To finish the week, there is a social run on Friday nights, starting from the rugby club from 6pm. For all abilities, everyone runs together as a group. i To find out more about Erme Valley Harriers, go to ermevalleyharriers.co.uk or call Mark Livermore on 07850 044672
