AWARD FOR ARCHIVE GROUP Ivybridge Mill Archives Group is this year’s winner of the Nick Cummins Community Group Award. Since Stowford Mill closed, the group has undertaken detailed investigation, documentation and archiving of the paper mill’s 226 years in Ivybridge, enabling an important aspect of the town’s industrial heritage to be preserved. IMAG has also delivered eight public displays and presentations, recorded oral reminiscences and collected over 2,000 digital photographic records of the town. Next year, as well as consolidating its existing work, the group intends to broaden its research to include all aspects of Ivybridge heritage. It hopes to be working with the town council on two new projects and with Devon CC on restoring the Ivybridge boundary stones. IMAG will also begin to record all current material on a dedicated museum system which will eventually enable the archives to be digitally referenced by anyone with an interest in the town’s heritage. In the long run, the group hopes

that it will be able to set up an Ivybridge Heritage Centre at Stowford Mill when its development is completed.

Chance to invest in local solar farm In an exciting move to bring more community-owned energy to the area, Ivybridge group PL:21 Transition Initiative has teamed up with award-winning Bath and West Community Energy (BWCE) to give local people the chance to invest in a newly-built solar array. Local people are invited to a free public meeting on Wednesday, 13th January, at The Watermark, Ivybridge, at 7pm to find out more about the bond offer and how they can get involved. BWCE is offering investment in a two-year fixed interest bond with a 5.5% pa interest rate that will complete the purchase of a 4.3 Mega Watt solar farm at Lee Moor. The solar array is being constructed on brownfield land associated with the old china clay works at Portworthy Dams, and will generate enough clean energy to power about 1,300 average homes every year. As a

community enterprise it will also generate over £20,000 per year to support local projects. Peter Crone, PL:21 renewables expert, commented: “This is an exciting opportunity for people to get involved in a local renewable energy scheme. We look forward to working with communities across the area and to ensuring this solar farm becomes a successful community energy enterprise.” BWCE has agreed to raise the funds to purchase the solar farm with a view to it being taken on by a new, local community energy company – currently being developed by PL:21 – after two years. The bond offer is set to raise £1.68 million over the next seven weeks. IVYBRIDGE ‘EVEREST’ CHALLENGE An Ivybridge adventurer is set to ‘conquer Mount Everest’ in an extreme challenge in memory of his father. Richard Lander Stow will ascend and descend Western Beacon 41 times (around 77 miles of effort) to achieve the equivalent of climbing Mount Everest’s near 9,000 metres. Richard is due to set off from Davey's Cross at 6am on the 2nd January, 2016, and anticipates that it will take 12 to 18 hours to complete. People are welcome to run with him, or just cheer him on. Protecting your assets A seminar explaining how you can protect your home and your cash assets, to be passed on at a later date to your children or other beneficiaries, is being held by Richardson LS at 10am in The Watermark on 20th January. How Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and a variety of Trusts can be used to not only protect your assets but remove the need for Probate in the future, making things simpler and less costly for your beneficiaries, will also be covered. An Ivybridge school boy has received a reply from the Prime Minister in response to a letter he sent expressing concerns about driving and courtesy on the road. Luca Bond, 10, who is in Year 6 at Stowford School, became concerned about thoughtless and irresponsible driving he witnessed while travelling as a passenger. Instead of just grumbling, Luca decided to do something proactive and put his concerns in writing. The Prime Minister was clearly impressed, as in his reply he thanked Luca for his “well-written letter” and “the time and trouble he has taken to get in touch”. Luca’s letter has been forwarded to the Department for Transport who deal with such matters. Luca said: “I wasn’t happy about the standard of some driving in Ivybridge and Plymouth and I worry that, without some actions, the number of accidents will increase so I decided to do something about it. “I am now waiting for a response from the Department for Transport to my suggestions about how to tackle inconsiderate drivers, who put other motorists at risk through their thoughtless actions.”

Fairtrade Fortnight planning meeting Ivybridge Fairtrade Group is holding a planning meeting for Fairtrade Fortnight 2016 on Saturday, 9th January, at 10.30am at the Wesley Cafe, Ivybridge Methodist Church. Everyone with an interest in Fairtrade is welcome!

Christmas tree festival success St John’s Church Christmas Tree Festival could become an annual event after hundreds of people visited to admire more than 20 tress decorated by local community groups. The festival, which raised just under £1,000, proved so popular that the trees stayed up in the church all through the festive period.

HARRIERS SUPPORT TEAM LEO Erme Valley Harriers presented a cheque for £200 to Team Leo, a charity which raises funds to make new medicines available to children with muscular dystrophy. The money will go towards Team Leo’s key goal to raise £10,000 for Muscular Dystrophy UK’s Fast Forward Campaign, which aims to speed up access to medications for children with Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The charity is also being supported by Lawsons of Ivybridge, who have made Team Leo their chosen charity this year. ing Devon /Cornwall, enjoyed an amazing day at the event at the Red House School of Performing Arts in Plymouth. Her results were (Primary A category): 1st in reel; 2nd in hop jig; 3rd in light jig; 5th in rally reel; joint 4th in the combined reel; and a brilliant 1st in the trophy reel. Summer’s next feis is in London this month, then three more venues early next year to try and gain a place at the world championships in Ireland in the middle of the year. Summer also performs in dance displays, dancing with senior girls to Lord of the Dance. She did a wonderful dance in the Stowford celebration assembly, along with showing off her medals, trophies and champion sash. The Ivybridge magazine

The December meeting of Ivybridge Flower Club has always been well attended by members and visitors alike, as it is always the Christmas meeting, and this year was pleasingly no different. The demonstrator was Julie Collins, joint director of The Academy of Floral Art in Exeter. Her title was ‘something for Christmas’ and Julie showed the audience how to make various types of Christmas wreaths, traditional designs suitable for table decoration and a Christmas tree made of copper mesh covered in air moss, decorated with artificial baubles, wooden stars and complete with battery-operated lights. Julie also told of the busy year she has ahead in 2016, which includes an invitation to take part in a symposium on floral design

The pre-lunch ‘social hour’ at Ivybridge Probus Club’s December meeting gave members the chance to welcome back Clive Hunter after a few months unavoidable absence. Twenty seven members enjoyed an excellent lunch before president Michael Bailey thanked Howard Webster for organising a highly entertaining evening at Devonport Playhouse watching Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, and Michael Holman, in absentia, for organising the second golf day at Wrangaton Golf Club. Reflecting on 2015, the club has enjoyed a wide range of social events including two evenings at Devonport Playhouse, the Ladies’ Spring Lunch at Hope Cove, a behind the screens look at Plymouth Magistrates Court, a

Maggie, Ben, Nick, Oliver, Annalise and Chantal with the RMVCC Corps of Drums

Stowford children were treated to a special performance when the Corps of Drums from the Royal Marine Volunteer Cadet Corps visited the school. Nathan Brown, an ex Stowford pupil who belongs to the unit, brought his fellow drummers to visit the school. After having played for all the children at the start of the day, the cadets then ran workshops for some of the older classes.

FOUNDATION FIND THE GRUFFALO As a finale to their topic about the Gruffalo, Foundation class at Manor visited Haldon Forest, near Exeter, (below) to follow the Gruffalo Trail. This was a very exciting day and involved lots of walking and adventure. After nearly two miles of exploring through the forest they found the Gruffalo! This was their first educational visit and was a great success.

Selected children from key stage 2 at Woodlands Park Primary School performed at The Famous Lee Mill on its Christmas evening. They sang carols to a busy crowd at the festive evening, which also included festive food and drinks.The most well received carols were “Midnight” and “Little Donkey”. The whole evening was a great hit and the children sang beautifully while thoroughly enjoying themselves.

Pupils in years 2 and 4 at Stowford School had the opportunity to deepen their understanding of world faiths when the grandmother of two pupils came in to talk about the beliefs that are important to Jewish people. Mrs Pollak, who has granddaughters in both year groups, came in to explain some of the ideas and festivals that are important to people who follow Judaism. She described the Shabbat celebration that their family observe every week to remember that on the seventh day of creation, God rested. She also talked about the Sukkot festival that is held around harvest time, where Jewish people build a shelter that is open to the sky to remember how, once Moses had

led them out of slavery in Egypt, the Jews lived a nomadic existence until they found homes in the Promised Land.

She also brought in a variety of Jewish artefacts, including Hannukah candles, a kippah and a Jewish prayer book.

Year 5 and 6 children at Erme Primary School have had the opportunity to take part in Bikeability. The three Bikeability levels are designed to improve cycling skills, no matter what is known already. Children who achieved level 1 can now get on and off a bike without help, start off, pedal and stop with control, pedal along using gears and control their bike. At Level 2, the children took to the streets of Ivybridge. To achieve a level 2 badge they must be able to successfully start and finish an on-road journey, recognise typical hazards, know where to ride on the road and how to pass parked vehicles and side roads. It was thoroughly enjoyed by all children! The Ivybridge magazine

EXHIBITION ON SCREEN COMES TO THE WATERMARK Goya, Visions of Flesh and Blood, opens a season of Exhibition on Screen at The Watermark. Francisco Goya is Spain’s most celebrated artist and considered the father of modern art. Not only a brilliant observer of everyday life and Spain’s troubled past, he is a gifted portrait painter and social commentator par excellence.

Goya takes the genre of portraiture to new heights and his genius is reappraised in a muchanticipated landmark exhibition at The National Gallery, London. The film, showing on Monday, 11th January, at 7.30pm uses the exhibition to look in-depth at Goya’s eventful life. Tickets £12 (buy all three in this series for £30).

Slimming together helps mother and daughter shed the stones

People who try to get healthy together are three times more likely to be successful as those who go solo, recent research has shown. And one happy mother and daughter from Ivybridge are delighted that they embarked on their weight-loss journey together, which helped them lose a combined weight of almost 12st. Sandra and Rachel Clifton have transformed their lives since joining the Ivybridge Slimming World group. The pair followed the club’s Food Optimising healthy eating plan, which en-

courages slimmers to satisfy their appetite with ‘Free Foods’, foods that are filling but low in calories and fat, while still enjoying small amounts of the foods that most diets rule out, like chocolate, crisps and alcohol. Sandra says: “We were still able to have all of our favourites like roast dinners and curries just by changing the way we cooked and prepared them, and we enjoyed trying new recipes together too.” Rachel says: “At first, I was nervous about joining but everyone was so friendly and supportive, and now we look forward to seeing everyone each week.” Leanne, who runs the Ivybridge SW group, said: “Seeing Sandra and Rachel's weight come down week after week has been a joy. RANGERS Happy New Year Make joining a volunteer day one of your resolutions for the New Year, say DNPA Rangers Andrea Roberts and Ella Briens The wet and windy months of November and December has caused a few issues on the footpaths and bridlepaths which myself and Ella and currently looking into. Blocked drains and surface water end up eroding paths making them difficult to use, but of course we are lucky in comparison to the floods which occurred up North. Over the next couple of months we will also be looking at our yearly erosion surveys. This is where certain areas of the moor have suffered erosion over the years for varying reasons. It might be a popular linear route from a moor gate onto a tor, or where farmers drive up to feed /check on their livestock over the winter months or even where a popular archaeological site is frequently visited. We take photographs of the area, measure the erosion (depth and width) and also record what we think is causing the problem i.e. stock, 4 x 4, water run-off, walkers etc. By doing this every year we have built up a good picture of the erosion sites and can plan our work program accordingly to try and tackle some of these problems. Erosion on public rights of way is monitored / captured when we conduct our path surveys throughout the year and is not included in this set of surveys. Although the winter has seen a drop in the number of visitors and recreational users to the moor we have unfortunately seen an increase in anti-social behaviour including off-road scrambling bikes and fly tipping. If you do come across anything like this please don’t hesitate to pass on any details to us that might help in a prosecution. As we are now CSAS accredited with the police we have stronger links with them to be able to follow up on these types of issues. Ella and I are planning more volunteer days for this year so if you would like to get involved, please check our Dartmoor National Park web pages or keep an eye out for this column where details will be listed.

Children and staff at Stowford School said a fond goodbye to Peter Wycliffe-Jones as he retired from the Governing Board after 28 years of service. Peter became involved with the school not long after it opened, initially as a parent and then as a governor. More recently, he has held the post of chairman, playing a major role in the development of the school and sitting on the interview panel for the majority of staff currently at the school. At a special assembly to mark his leaving, Peter was presented with

a special card, created by children throughout the school, explaining why they thought Stowford was such a special school. Staff and governors gathered at the end of the day to wish him well, thank him for all his hard work and present him with a specially-engraved letter opener. The school is currently looking to recruit new governors, particularly anyone with HR, accounting or legal knowledge from the business world. Harriers success at county championships l athletics

Athletes of Erme Valley Harriers performed extremely well at the Devon County Cross Country Championships held at Exeter, which was held within the Westward League Cross Meeting. Harriers won medals across the board. Owen Parkin was 2nd U20 Man. Allister Bristow was 1st mv40, Andy Norris 2nd mv40, Russ Mogridge 3rd mv50 and Ken Summers 2nd mv65. The men were also 3rd male vet team. The ladies also did well, with Cleo Perry 1st fv50, Emma Lake 2nd fv40, Jaine Swift 2nd fv45 and Sharon Terry 3rd fv55. The ladies were also 1st female vet team. Bristow was 1st mv40, with Cleo Perry 2nd fv40, Emma Lake 3rd fv40 and Ken Summers 2nd mv65. At the popular Bicton Blister, a tough 10 mile multi-terrain event across Woodbury Common, Allister Bristow was the first Harrier home in 7th place and 2nd mv40. out of over 400 finishers. At the Cockington Christmas Caper Harriers turned out in force, with Allister Bristow again in great form as he was 3rd overall and 1st mv40. The victorious Stowford athletics squad

STOWFORD ARE SPORTS HALL CHAMPS l schools’ athletics Eleven local primary schools competed at Ivybridge Community College for a place in the South Hams area Indoor Athletics Competition early this year. Teams of 12 Year 5 and 6 pupils from each school went head-tohead in various races, the vertical jump, standing long jump, speed bounce and chest push events, accruing points for their performances throughout the afternoon. Winners of the Learning Community Tournament would go forward and compete at the area

finals, which will be held this month. It was a fiercely competitive event, with all the youngsters keen to give their best efforts. Overall winners were Stowford School with 308 points, ahead of Manor School in second place with a score of 292 points. Stowford team coach, Gill Gilbert, said: “The children worked brilliantly as a team and showed real determination to give their best possible performance. We are looking forward to the next stage of the competition.”
