NEWS New operators at leisure centre

Five young people from Ivybridge attended a presentation at St James’ Palace, London, to receive their Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and certificate from Jo Bradshaw, explorer, mountaineer and expedition leader. Alyssa Oates, Adam Tremlett, James Boyne, Jack Tremlett and Dan Sansom, who all attended Ivybridge Community College,

volunteered, learnt a new skill, got fit, took part in a week-long residential and undertook an expedition in wild country in order to achieve their Gold DofE Award. During the presentation, HRH The Duke of Edinburgh took the opportunity to congratulate them on their award and asked them about their DofE journeys. Ivybridge Community College

teacher Andrew Mitchell said: “I’m extremely proud of all the youngsters at the college who undertake Duke of Edinburgh Awards, especially those who go on to complete their Gold award. “It’s a nationally-recognised scheme that helps young people develop key skills for life and work, such as confidence, commitment and team working.”

BUSINESSES WANTED FOR SOLAR PROJECT STUDY A community energy group has been awarded a grant to look at the feasibility of installing solar panels on the roofs of buildings on an industrial estate. Over 50 south-facing roofs on Lee Mill Industrial Estate have space for up to 3MW of solar photovoltaics (PV), which could generate enough clean energy to power up to 920 homes. South Dartmoor Community Energy has been awarded a grant to carry out a feasibility study to determine which of these

roofs are structurally suitable and which businesses can make best use of the solar electricity. They are looking for 10 businesses to take part in the study, with a view to installing the PV in 2017. There would be no cost to the business as the PV would be financed by a community share offer, allowing local people to invest in the project; similar schemes in the South West have given investors annual returns of 5-7%. The businesses would be offered reduced rate electricity and any

profits would be reinvested into a Community Fund and used to benefit other local initiatives. SDCE is a non-profit community benefit society based in Ivybridge, set up to help local communities become more energy efficient and involved in renewable energy projects. The group is holding a drop-in information event at the Westward Inn, Lee Mill, on Wednesday, 18th January, between 4-7pm. î southdartmoorcommunity energy.org / 0800 112 3044

LABOUR SELECT COUNTY ELECTION CANDIDATE Ivybridge members of the South Hams Labour Party have selected Tony Rea as their candidate for the county council elections in May 2017. Tony said: “I am honoured and delighted to have been selected as the Labour candidate for Ivy-

bridge. I’ve resided in the town for 16 years and think it’s a great place to live, but I also know first-hand about many of the issues here. “I am now looking forward to talking to people in the town about the things they are most concerned about and would like improving.”

Erme Valley Guiding celebrated Christmas together with a fantastic evening at Cornwood Church. Members of Erme Valley Senior Section organised the evening for the Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Trefoil Guild members in Ivybridge and surrounding area. During the celebrations the girls enjoyed Christmas tree-themed activities with a story, crafts and dancing to Christmas action songs.

SPOTTY MAD FOR PUDSEY

Have a cuppa for St Luke’s

With the final pennies and pounds counted it can be revealed that Woodlands Park Primary School raised an incredible £520 for this year’s Children In Need. The school went ‘spotty’ mad to raise money for children less fortunate. There was a ‘spotty museum’ full of ‘spotty’ objects for the children to look at, a ‘spotty’ drawing competition, and Lola and Sumer created a life-size colourful drawing of Pudsey that the children could attach coins to. The highlight of the day was a visit from the star himself, Pudsey, and the ‘photo booth’ was very popular.

Get together with friends this February for a coffee morning to raise much-needed funds to help local families receive vital care in the community. It is St Luke’s Coffee Morning month all through February and events can be as big or little as you like. Even £50 pays for an hour of intensive care from a St Luke’s specialist unit nurse. If you can do something incredible for your community, the charity is asking people to get in touch with the community fundraising team on (01752) 964427 or visit stlukes-hospice. org.uk/coffee.

COME AND JOIN THE FUN AT RAINBOWS Do you have a daughter or granddaughter aged 5-7? Would she like to make new friends and try lots of different activities? Rainbows are the youngest members of Girlguiding. Being a Rainbow is all about developing self-confidence, building friendships, trying new things and having fun. “Rainbows learn by doing – they get their hands dirty with arts and crafts, cooking and playing games,’ says Sue Fricker, leader of 5th Ivybridge Rainbows. “They follow a programme called the Rainbow Jigsaw, through which they can take part in lots of

different activities, both indoors and outdoors, with girls their own age.” 5th Ivybridge Rainbows are currently looking for new members!

Over two fantastic weekends, the St John’s Church Christmas Tree Festival was a resounding success, with more great Christmas trees as well as music, stalls, activities and food available in the hall, and lots of visitors. Organisers would like to thank all the local organisations and businesses who provided over 30 varied and beautifully decorated trees, and the many visitors who came and made the event so successful, helping to raise in excess of £1,000 in the process. in the

community By Hannah Whiting - Co-op Community Pioneer

There is absolutely no doubt that Ivybridge has a fantastic community at its heart, with so many amazing groups, charities, and volunteers and at Glanvilles Mill Co-op, we have been getting involved with as many community groups and events as we can. I have been a Community Pioneer for Glanvilles Mill Co-op since May 2016 along with my colleague, Paula. We co-ordinate all of the community involvement for our store and since June we have supported many local groups and raised over £680 for local causes and £326 for the British Red Cross. Most recently, we raffled a Christmas hamper to raise money for local charity Stairways, which provides activities for adults with learning difficulties. Many of their clients shop with us and we wanted to do something to raises funds for them. Also, over the last few months, Leah and Abby from the Alzheimer’s Society have been visiting our store and giving one hour workshops so all the store’s colleagues can become Dementia Friends. The workshops really changed the way we may have initially perceived dementia and have helped us understand the disease and how we can help those of our customers who are living with it. You can follow what we’ve been getting up to on our Facebook page: facebook.com/GMIvybridgeCoop. Alternatively, ask to see our community folder next time you are in store! We can’t wait to get even more involved with our community in 2017! If you know a local cause or group who might like us to get involved, please get in touch: email Hswhiting318@gmail. com or call 07592097033 / 01752 690361

CHRISTMAS DELIGHT

Members and visitors at the Christmas meeting of Ivybridge Flower Club were enthralled by the demonstration by Angela Turner, a national demonstrator from Dorset, entitled “All is Calm, All is Bright”. Her arrangements filled the stage area of The Watermark with a variety of shapes, designs and amazing colour combinations. Being a “national”, each design was much larger and used many more flowers, candles etc than normally seen at a club monthly meeting and the audience was not disappointed. Members had worked hard preparing for this meeting, making Christmas wreaths and a veritable feast of treats in the form of small Christmas cakes, mince pies, fudge, caramelised nuts etc, together with a visit from Phoenix Cards. The club’s next meeting at The Watermark is on 9th January, 2017, when the demonstrator will be florist Amanda Randall, and her title will be “spring nest”. Visitors are always welcome, £5. ¢ Contact club chairman Hilary Newcombe on 01752 892647

PLYMOUTH BOMBING Lawrence Axworthy will talk about ‘the bombing of Plymouth’ at the January general meeting of Ivybridge U3A on Monday, 16th January, at The Watermark, starting at 2 pm. The club was delighted to be jointly awarded the Nick Cummins Community Award, and pleased to share the success with Paul Jones, jointly awarded the David Britton Citizen of the Year Award. Ivybridge U3A has some 360 members and 30 different interest groups, including industrial archaeology of Dartmoor, natural and local history, music, philosophy, card games, art, science and technology. ¢ www.ivybridge-u3a.org.uk / ivybridge.u3a@gmail.com / 01364 724700

CHANGE OF DATE

Ivybridge Probus Club’s Christmas Ladies’ Lunch at Elizabeth House was an enjoyable pre-amble to the festive season. President Michael Greaves proposed the toast to the Ladies and other guests and thanked Keith and Ann Kiddell for their organisation of this much-anticipated annual event. The January lunch, which was scheduled for Tuesday 3rd,, will now be held on Tuesday 10th, as the hotel is closed for the first week in January. In February, the lunch will revert to the traditional first Tuesday of the month. ¢ 01752 892255

Has it really been a month since the last edition of The Clay Factory Diaries? What a hectic time we’ve had up at Redlake Trading Estate as we spent the majority of the month preparing for our second annual festive event. You came out in droves to shop at our arts market, meet the resident artists at the open studios event and to take in some art at our exhibition. Then in the evening, we held our second arty party as people enjoyed the delicious food from The Clay Factory’s very own RedPod Food. As the Christmas lights twinkled in the darkness we all enjoyed a mulled apple juice (or two) and the fantastic Tim Leay serenaded us with his music. There was some great art on show, too... As the lights were switched off and we plunged the building into darkness, it kind of felt that Christmas had finished early. So, what next for The Clay Factory? Well, it’s a new year and that means we have resolutions to keep and goals to achieve. We’re currently working on a website to keep everyone up to date with what is happening up the lane to the big chimney. We are also hoping to put in place a calendar of interesting events to bring the town’s folk to the building on a regular basis. There will be a few developments related to RedPod Food in the New Year and we already have more art shows planned for spring, summer and dare we say the c word again? In fact, there will be lots to tell you about in 2017, so keep your eyes peeled for the next edition of The Clay Factory Diaries to see what’s going on up the lane to the big chimney. Look out for our new website www.theclayfactory.co.uk and to see pictures from the festive edition of Art on the Edge visit The Clay Factory’s Facebook page.

SCHOOL REPORTS

KS1 performers

Foundation and Key stage 1 children at Stowford School presented a spectacular Christmas performance of Superstar to the rest of the school and their parents. The stars of the school ‘Celestial Choir’ are hoping to dazzle music teacher Mr Marrz as they vie for the ‘SUPERSTAR’ role in the nativity. Stella, who always tries hard but often gets things wrong, is chosen, to her surprise, to play the part of the Star of Bethlehem; the reason – because she understands the heart of the true Christmas message.

Soloists: Lucy, Alyssa, Alice, Grace, Alana

Superstar told the traditional nativity story with wonderful, up-beat songs and a ‘showbiz’ atmosphere. The older children delivered another amazing carol concert at Ivybridge Methodist Church with readings guiding the audience through the Christmas story. The concert opened with Alice singing the first verse of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ with Alyssa, Alana, Grace and Lucy accompanying her for the second. Every class performed a Christmas song, as well as joining together to sing some traditional and modern carols.

The Christmas Toy Story was this year’s Christmas production by Foundation and KS1 classes at Manor Primary School. Set on Christmas Eve, after Santa has brought toys for the children and put them underneath the Christmas tree, the toys come to life and wonder why they are there. With actions, words, songs and dances the toys find out all about Christmas.

The worthy award winners at Woodlands Park Primary School The children and staff at Woodlands Park Primary celebrated the final day of the autumn term with their awards ceremony, honouring the achievement of many of the children. The awards ceremony coincided with Christmas Jumper day, in aid of ‘Save the Children’, and the hall was a sea of Christmas jumpers. The school raised £270 for an excellent cause. 14

The Manor Primary School choir performed a variety of Christmas songs and traditional carols when they went carol singing at Ivydene Care Home. Residents and staff were delighted to hear the youngsters sing.

SCHOOL REPORTS Foundation classes at Manor Primary School visited Wembury Beach on a wonderfully sunny, if chilly, winter’s day as part of their work on the Bear Hunt story. At the beach, they searched for caves, went on a scavenger hunt, made sculptures and had a big picnic. At the end of the day the children were delighted to find some treasure in the sand.

Thomas, Jack and Nick

Year 5 pupils from Stowford School visited Langage Power Station as part of their topic about electricity. They had a tour of the plant, including the control room, and discovered how much energy the power station produces; it can produce up to 885MW of electricity, enough to power almost one million homes. The children found out how the electricity is produced – two gas turbines each drive an air-cooled generator and the heat produced is, in turn, used to power a steam turbine driving another generator! In the education room, they had some handson fun discovering which materials conduct electricity, how human pedal power can Little Orchard Nurseries Oct16_Layout generate electricity and a- test of their new1 14-Sep-16 9:31 PM Page 1 knowledge about power and energy.

wellness exercise more, you will want to eat more food as you are using more energy – that’s natural. If you eat a healthy, balanced diet along with regular exercise, over time you will be on the way to achieving your goals and staying healthy. 4) Mix up your training. Often injuries come about as a result of over-doing something. Try to mix your fitness training up by including strength training, cardiovascular sessions, stretching and taking part in games. Always warm up properly by increasing your heart rate slowly to the level required to take part in exercise and then perform some gentle mobility drills for each joint. 5) Add some core work to your routine. Keeping a healthy spine will enable you to train well and injury free. Observe good posture and keep your back mobile and strong. The key is to have a plan, keep going regularly and make it a life style – not a chore to take part in exercise. Why not join the gym or seek professional advice from a personal fitness trainer. If you are worried about taking part

in exercise or have any injuries or illness, see your general practitioner or physiotherapist before taking part. Don’t make your new year’s resolution to get fit, make it to stay fit and enjoy exercise!

National Detox Month After all the excess over the festive period, January is the perfect time for National Detox Month and a great start for your New-Year resolutions, says Claire MorganHughes of Devon Fit Camp. We are all guilty of over-indulging during the party season! It’s a chance to let your hair down and spend time with family and socialising with friends. The only problem is, eating rich foods and drinking more alcohol than normal can take its toll on your energy levels as well as your waistline. We recommend adding these top five foods and drinks to your diet this month: 1) Water should always be at the

Try and continue this into February – it takes 30 days to form a new habit and this is a great one to add to your toolbox to fight weight gain. January is a time for new beginnings, resolutions and good intentions, writes Chris Dodd of Fitness at Home. For those of you planning to lose the extra pounds gained over Christmas, the temptation to purchase gym equipment in the January sales is the perfect solution. Or is it? Sales of home gym equipment sore in the month of January but how many of these items become dust collectors, stowed away in the garage, by the end of February?

DON’T SUFFER IN SILENCE By Rebecca Ellerbeck, Solicitor at Howard & Over

It’s sadly true that domestic abuse is much more common than people realise. Abuse is not only physical violence, but can include emotional or psychological abuse, sexual violence and abuse, threats, harassment and financial control. It can happen in all kinds of relationships and for any reason. On numerous occasions, abuse is witnessed by children, causing them significant distress and long-term emotional problems. Domestic abuse tends to follow a pattern and is designed to consciously control and dominate a partner/former partner or family member. While women are more likely to be the victims of domestic violence, men are also affected. The first step in dealing with domestic abuse is to recognise what is happening to you and understand that you are not to blame. It is also important to tell someone you can trust as soon as possible. There are remedies available to protect you and your family.

MONEY MATTERS

A court can make a Non-molestation Order, which forbids the abuser from abusing or threatening violence, harassing, pestering or intimidating you and any children. Such an order gives the police powers to arrest the abuser should the order be broken. The court can also make an Occupation Order, which enables you to enforce your right to stay in your home and for the abuser to move out. Howard and Over’s domestic abuse team has significant experience in dealing with injunctions and other work necessary to protect victims of domestic abuse. We can also put you in touch with support networks, who offer on-going support once all legal aspects have been dealt with and the appropriate protection afforded. Support networks include the Plymouth Domestic Abuse Service – 01752 252033 – and 24hour National Domestic Violence Helpline – 0808 200 0247. If you are affected by domestic abuse please do contact us. Don’t suffer in silence. During office hours, contact Rebecca Ellerbeck on 01752 690123. www.howard-over.co.uk

with Ivybridge Accountants Ltd Being an accountant, Simon Jilks can’t let January come and go without mentioning the dreaded tax returns

Taxing January... As a reminder, the deadline for submitting your 2015/16 personal tax return is 31st January 2017. This is also the deadline by which any residual tax for that year should be paid. If your return is not submitted by the deadline an automatic penalty of £100 is levied by HMRC. If it remains unfiled for three months then daily penalties apply, which add up! I would also mention that no matter when you file your tax return, the due date for your tax will always only ever be 31st January, so why not look at preparing your return ahead of time, at least then there is time to save for any tax. If you are in the fortunate position

of having a refund, then this is paid as soon as HMRC process the return. Payments on account can also take a little understanding, but in essence, if the overall tax liability is greater than £1,000, then payments on account also need to be made, which are 50% of the previous year’s liability each. Therefore, assuming a 2015/16 tax liability of £1,500, payments on account of £750 each will be due on 31st January and 31st July 2017. In this example, if payments haven’t already been made towards the 2015/16 liability, that too will be due for payment by 31st January 2017, making the total amount due on 31st January 2017 £2,250. As HMRC amusingly state, “tax doesn’t have to be taxing”, but we all know it can be surprising sometimes. As much as we try our best to minimise tax, it is fairly certain we will all have a bill to pay at some time or another, so my advice would be, plan ahead.

WI SENT RECORD NUMBER OF ‘LOVE IN A BOX’ FOR CHILDREN THIS CHRISTMAS Erme WI sent a record number of boxes to the Love in a Box charity this Christmas. The annual gathering of items for children of all ages had been under way for the past three months leading up to the November meeting, where members put the boxes

together (right). The ladies then turned their attention to the Christmas tree which was on display at St John’s Church Christmas Tree Festival. The theme was paper and all the items, including the design of the tree, were done by members.

Over one million people lose their homes to pay for care David Richardson, founder of Richardsons Legal Services

Over the last five years, over one million people have lost their homes to pay for care. Many people say to me “I have worked hard all my life to buy my own home and save for retirement and I want my children to benefit from it. Is there something I can do to ensure they inherit?”. The first thing I must tell you is that if you do anything to deliberately deprive the local council of

payment for care fees it is called deliberate deprivation of assets and will not work. This includes giving your home away or putting it in trust specifically to avoid care fees. There are, however, many good reasons to put your home in trust. One is that property in trust does not need probate when you die, thus saving probate costs, which can be substantial, if a professional person is used to obtain probate. Putting your property into trust also means less stress for the people left behind because they can deal with the property straight away, instead of waiting

typically six to 12 months for probate before they can do anything. Another good reason is, that with so many Wills contested these days under the 1975 inheritance act, property in trust cannot be contested in this way, ensuring those that you want to inherit do so. An interesting fact is that if you put your home into trust for any of these good reasons your property is automatically protected against all unforeseen eventualities, whatever they may be. It must also be remembered that not everyone goes into care in old age; about 1 in 4, although I must admit that is a lot.

Normally, if you do go into care you are only allowed to keep £17,250 of your total assets, including the value of your home, after which you have to make a contribution to care costs. If your assets total over £23,250 you will usually be asked to pay the entire cost. This is a complicated subject and not every case is the same. I am always more than happy to discuss your particular circumstances in order to advise you. For more information and a free consultation from David Richardson please telephone Richardsons Legal Services for an appointment on 0800 014 831.

Housing developments to the east and west of the town are already underway and we are hoping that work at Stowford Mill will commence soon. The Joint Local Plan, which looks ahead to 2034, will gather pace during 2017 and decide where future development is located. The sites selected and their impact on the way the town functions, in terms of transport, highways, facilities and services, will be vital. The council meeting on Monday, 27th February, will feature a presentation from Tim Mills of Fusion Lifestyle, who we expect will be outlining some exciting plans for the leisure centre, which we understand will see a huge investment in the swimming side, plus improvements in the other sports facilities. THANK YOU

The people of Ivybridge turned out in force on a cold, damp December day to support 140 bikers all dressed as Santa as they passed through the town on a charity ride to Little Harbour Children’s Hospice at St. Austell, the local children’s hospice. Friends of CHSW held a bucket collection which, thanks to the generosity of onlookers, raised £414.22. The money will help the charity to continue the work it does in making the most of short and precious lives.

ADOPTION EVENT

A charitable adoption agency is looking for adopters to come forward to provide loving homes to a growing number of older children, sibling groups and children with disabilities waiting to be adopted. Families for Children is inviting anyone interested in finding out more about adoption to an informal information session on Saturday, 4th February, 2017, between 10am and 12noon at its Buckfast office – Southgate Court, Buckfastleigh, TQ11 0EE.

SPORT

Community RANGERS

l netball

Re-kindled passion for netball has led to major success for an Ivybridge club. Ivy Ladies Netball Club was only formed in 2014 after a message was posted on social media asking if there were any local ladies interested in forming a netball team. The post attracted great interest from like-minded ladies, many who had not played for many years – some since their school days – and Ivy Ladies was formed in September 2014. The team joined the Plymouth & District Netball League in December of that year (mid way through the season) but still ended up winning the division and being promoted to Division 4. Success on the court followed the next season, too, when Ivy Ladies won their final game of the season to win the division and achieve promotion to Division 3.

Meanwhile, interest had grown so great that a second team, Ivy Ladies Too, was formed for the 2015/2016 season. The team finished a respectable mid table in Division 5 in its first season. Both teams have made steady starts to the 2016/2017 season. Ivy Ladies Too are currently third in their division, having won six of their nine games. Ivy Ladies have settled well into the higher level of Division 3, winning four of their seven matches to sit in fifth place in the division. The club trains at Ivybridge CC every Sunday morning between 9.30-11am (cost £4) under the guidance of coached by Gaynor Bartlett. The club would like to thank Lewis Marine and Kingsbridge Auto Repair & Rescue Ltd for their invaluable sponsorship over the past two years. Anyone interested in playing netball should email Emma Jones at ivyladies@gmail.com

Harriers show their stamina l athletics There is no shortage of stamina as far as athletes from Erme Valley Harriers is concerned. Pride of place goes to Jean-Baptiste Rouvelin, who completed three marathons in five weeks. All the marathons were tough, but that did not stop Rouvelin recording good times at the Eden Project (3.52.01), Snowdonia (3.48.48) and recently at the Cornish Marathon (3.26.49). Tom Packer ran two marathons recently at Dartmoor Vale (3.27.49) and also the Cornish Marathon (3.19.34). Richard Lander-Stow also ran at the Eden Project (4.05.32) and an even tougher challenge at the Brecon Beacons Ultra over 46 miles. Lander-Stow ran an impressive 8 hours and 48 minutes, finishing 22nd overall. There was a good turnout at the 30

popular Bicton Blister. This race is ‘off road’ and covers 10 miles at Bicton College, in East Devon. Tom Packer was the first Harrier home in 30th place (1.10.16) and

was followed by Emma Lake (1.13.38), Sarah Hirons (1.16.58) and Simon Swift (1.18.05). At the Devon County Cross Country Championships at Exeter, which also included the Westward League series, the Harriers senior lady Emma Lake was 2nd overall in the Championship and was part of the bronze medal winning team with Kate Medlicott and Linda Bracher. They were also bronze medalists in the lady vet team. Katy Mogridge was the gold medallist in the vet 50 category, while Owen Parkin was 2nd male in the U20 category. In the Junior races, Olivia Travers was 6th in the Championship. Anna Lake had an exceptional run to finish 10th Devon runner. The team was 4th, with Ella Isaias the 3rd scorer.

Stuart Hooppell reports on a patrol to monitor scramblers misusing the Moor Although I focus much of my energy on east Dartmoor, the adventurer within was quick to accept Ranger Ella’s kind invitation to the south west Moors to monitor and gather intelligence on scramblers mis-using Dartmoor. Ella and I patrolled the Commons straddling the road from Cadover Bridge through to Cornwood, periodically reporting to Tamsin and Jim of Ivybridge Police, who have been working hard over recent months to nip such activity in the bud. The police and ranger service are pushing to impart a lasting message that motorbike scrambling can damage a much-loved environment, as well as being detrimental to wildlife, archaeology, industry and local relations. Local communities have been very supportive, forming a threepronged response alongside the police and ranger teams. The informed approach taken by the police has impressed me. They recognised that in some instances incorrect information had led to honest misuse of common land (ie scrambling), and are instead directing their efforts towards organised group activities. During our patrol we gained details of a suspected ‘lookout’, which is being investigated by the police. Details were also taken of a van, thought to be transporting motocross bikes, and an associated vehicle. We also witnessed a truck, with a trailer loaded with several motocross bikes, immediately turn round upon sight of the police car. I was surprised by the level of organisation of the scramblers, and the police are monitoring social media to identify organisers and repeat offenders. The ranger team will continue to educate and engage with the public on matters threatening the national park, as well as strive to promote and encourage everybody to enjoy Dartmoor responsibly. Take Moor Care.
