NEWS PET CARE HELPERS NEEDED

An all-singing, all-dancing cast of superstar children went ‘Around the world in 80 minutes’ for the Dance Lab Devon showcase. Featuring numbers from Mulan to Moana, Aladdin to Antartica, dance numbers featured ballet, tap, modern, and jazz. The youngest performers, just two-and-a-half years old, stole the show with their version of ‘It’s a small world’. Staying in the USA, the senior girls pulled out all the stops for the big finale, ‘42nd Street’. All the proceeds from a raffle and the programme money went to Children’s Hospice South West, a wonderful charity that helps so many young children. î To find out more about Dance Lab Devon, contact Charlotte on 07889719798 / admin@dancelabdevon.com

A charity which helps look after the pets of elderly people and those in the latter stages of a terminal illness urgently need volunteers in the Ivybridge area to help local residents. Volunteers from The Cinnamon Trust walk the dog(s) for a housebound owner, can foster pets when owners need hospital care, or simply fetch the cat food or clean out the bird cage or litter trays. Elderly or ill pet owners often worry about their ability to care for their pets, fearing that they may need to re-home them, but support from the Trust’s volunteers ensures they can stay together. î To find out more, and to register, call 01736 758707 or email appeals@cinnamon.org.uk

COMMUNITY ARTS GROUP DELIGHTED WITH GRANT A group which is planning to commemorate the end of the Great War with a piece of theatre has received grant funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Ivybridge Community Arts has received £5,300 from the fund’s First World War Then and Now programme. The award will be used to support the group’s “2018, Ivybridge Remembers” project set to take place in October 2018. The lottery funding supplements awards given by the Elmgrant Trust and by district councillors.

The focus of the project is to devise a piece of theatre to commemorate and celebrate the centenary of the end of the Great War. The performance will be built up from workshops and research, extracts of which will be on display at the final event. The group is inviting local people to share their ideas, family stories, letters, photographs, news items and other memorabilia to bring the period to life. A team of writers will then draw the material together to create

All past and present staff have continued to maintain the group with a policy of ‘learning through play’ ever since. PRE-SCHOOL IS 40

Lee Mill Pre-School was 40 years of age this year and celebrated the milestone with a party! Founded in 1977 by Sandra Barker as a playgroup for local children, the group soon attracted children from further afield. In 1979, Pam Beer joined as a staff member to assist Sandra and

PLASTIC FREE IVYBRIDGE

An Ivybridge man has set up a group which aims to reduce the amount of plastics used in the town. Tim Poate, a coastal scientist, working with PL:21 and Ivybridge Environmental Action Group, has set up Plastic Free Ivybridge as part of Surfers Against Sewerage’s Plastic Free Communities campaign, which aims to reduce single-use plastics and prevent the harm they cause to the ma-

rine environment. Tim would like to see Ivybridge gain ‘Plastic Free Community’ status, which would see the town council pass a motion supporting the reduction of single-use plastics both in council operations and within the town, businesses commit to stop providing single-use plastics, and community groups help educate people on the damage of plastics. The town would also need to

a script, which will encompass acting, singing and reading. The research will be preserved for the future enjoyment of the community and the performance will be recorded . Ivybridge Community Arts welcomes contributions, suggestions and ideas from local people and is keen to encourage others to join the project. No experience needed. The group’s next meeting will be early in January 2018.

undertake a bi-annual river clean to prevent plastics moving down to the coast. “Ivybridge is inextricably linked to the coast via the beautiful Erme,” said Tim. “As such, we can have a real impact on reducing the amount of waste that damages the marine environment.” î To get involved, contact Tim at plasticfreeivybridge@gmail.com or see the Facebook page facebook.com/ plasticfreeivybridge

A MUSICAL MASTERCLASS – BILLY ELLIOT AT IVYBRIDGE COMMUNITY COLLEGE Students at Ivybridge Community College put on one of the most gritty, poignant and emotionally moving shows when they performed hit musical Billy Elliot. The production was a triumph of comedy, high drama and musical prowess by all who participated. The world-renowned story, set in the North East of England in 1984 during the height of the Miners’ Strike, chronicles the story of Billy as he grows up against a backdrop of economic hardship and class warfare.

The students performed five shows over four days to sell-out audiences, who showed their appreciation through numerous standing ovations. The cast had to learn the Geordie accent, which they all mastered, to give the show true authenticity and the music was performed live by the college band. Reuben Elder, in Year 9, played the demanding lead role of Billy, which saw him in virtually every scene. The heartfelt duet between Billy and his deceased mother, played by Megan Ede, brought tears to the eyes of many in the audience.

THE FLORIDA PROJECT [15] Wed 10 Jan 2pm & 7.30pm. Sean Baker’s The Florida Project is a deeply moving and unforgettably poignant look at childhood. Set on a stretch of highway just outside the imagined utopia of Disney World, The Florida Project follows six-year-old Moonee and her rebellious mother Halley over the course of a single summer. ROH LIVE: RIGOLETTO Tue 16 Jan 7.15pm. The corruption of innocence is at the heart of Verdi’s potent tragedy in David McVicar’s production for The Royal Opera House. Rigoletto, court jester to the libertine Duke of Mantua, is cursed by the father of one of the Duke’s victims for his irreverent laughter. When the Duke seduces Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda, it seems the curse is taking effect. £16/£15/ £14. Club member discounts available. Film: TBC - Wed 17 Jan 2pm VICTORIA & ABDUL [PG] Wed 24 Jan 2pm & 7.30pm. Abdul Karim arrives from India to participate in Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee. The young clerk is surprised to find favour with the queen herself. As Victoria (Judi Dench) questions the constrictions of her long-held position, the two forge an unlikely and devoted alliance. As their friendship deepens, the queen begins to see a changing world through new eyes, joyfully reclaiming her humanity. EOS: CÉZANNE PORTRAITS OF A LIFE Thu 25 Jan 7.30pm (and Thu 1 Feb 2pm) One can’t appreciate 20th century art without understanding the significance and genius of Paul Cézanne. Featuring interviews with curators and experts from the National Portrait Gallery London, MoMA New York, National Gallery of Art Washington and Musée d’Orsay Paris, and correspondence from the artist himself, the film takes audiences beyond the exhibition to the places Cézanne lived and worked and sheds light on an artist who is perhaps the least known of all the impressionists – until now. £13/£12/£11. Club Member discounts apply BORG VS MCENROE [15] Wed 31 Jan 2pm & 7.30pm It’s the summer of 1980 and Björn Borg (Sverrir Gudnason) is the top tennis player in the world. There is only one obstacle in his pursuit of a record-breaking fifth Wimbledon championship – the highly talented but ferociously abrasive young American, John McEnroe (a perfectly cast Shia LaBeouf). With each man the antithesis of the other, both players delve into their formative memories as the climactic tournament draws near and anticipation reaches fever pitch.

SCHOOL REPORTS

CHRISTMAS PLAY After several weeks of rehearsals, Foundation and KS1 children at Manor Primary School performed their

Christmas Nativity play. ‘Born in a Barn’ played to a sell-out audience, with all the children singing and acting brilliantly, displaying real confidence and enjoyment. Members of staff were extremely proud of the children and their efforts. A big thank you, too, to all the families who came to watch and provided such super costumes.

YEAR 5/6 PRODUCTION Linked to the theme of World War II, ‘We’ll Meet Again’ told the story of a group of children being evacuated from Plymouth to the safety

of the countryside. The children’s acting was fantastic, and they sang a wide repertoire of songs. Both evenings were very well-received by the sell-out audiences.

GREAT FIRE OF LONDON Year 2 at Stowford School visited Greenbank Fire Station as part of their topic, the Great Fire of London. The children were given a tour of the fire station, including seeing where the on-duty fire-fighters sleep and rest and where the uniforms are kept ready for the firefighters to put on when an emergency call comes in. The children then had a safety talk before being able to look at the equipment in a fire engine itself, including power cutters and four ladders stored on top of the vehicle. Each child then had the chance to use the hose.

In the afternoon, back at school, parents joined the children to help them create junk-model buildings. These were taken out onto the field where they were arranged into a long street. Under supervision from the fire crew from Greenbank, the cardboard street was ignited and burned.

wellness SO MANY LOCAL OPPORTUNITIES Now in month seven of the initiative, Karen Highfield provides an update on the social prescribing service in Ivybridge The social prescribing service in Ivybridge provides one-to-one personalised support and links people with community and voluntary services to provide them with on-going help and support for their health and wellbeing. The pilot is set to run for 12 months and I am really delighted to have been able to meet and help people within our community over the last few months. Recognising that our health and wellbeing is affected by many factors, not all of them medical, is the idea behind social prescribing. There are many different areas the service can assist, from helping you to access social activities to helping identify volunteering opportunities. Volunteering is highly-valued and a way of putting something back, and you can make new friends, too! Perhaps you have a couple of hours a week to spare, or maybe you have recently retired and want to get your teeth stuck into something new. You may have been out of work for some time and want to improve your confidence, not to mention adding to your CV some of the qualities employers love! So, this New Year, whether you want to try something new or re-engage with an old hobby or interest and don’t know where to start, or perhaps you are suffering with the winter blues, or feeling isolated, get in touch and together we can identify opportunities in the local area. Contact me by email – karen. highfield@nhs.net – or by telephone at Ivybridge Medical Practice 01752 690777 or mobile 07756 826977. The social prescribing pilot is supported by South Hams CVS, Ivybridge Town Council, Livewell Southwest and Beacon Medical Group.

LEARN HOW TO RELAX AND REMAIN CALM WHEN THINGS ARE DIFFICULT Exiting news! I will be running a series of stress management and relaxation classes in 2018 says Tiffany Armitage Entitled Calm - Coping - Relaxed, the aim of the classes is to support you in learning how to relax and to remain calm when things are difficult. In the classes you will be introduced to the most up-to-date research on effective relaxation techniques and stress manage-

ment principles. The findings of neuroscience will be explained in an easy to access and useful way. At the classes, I will guide you through the techniques (such as positive visualisation, mindfulness and self hypnosis) which you can then take forward and practice in your every day life. I will be running the classes with Lara Lewis – we are both experienced therapists, specialising in Solution Focused Psychotherapy and Hypnotherapy.

I noticed those changes on the inside much sooner than the ones on the outside. But once my self-image caught up with my weight loss, I felt ready to do something that meant the world to me. At the girls’ next kick-boxing session, I stopped hiding at the back of the hall and got right into the action. “Ruby and I decided to exercise together more regularly. We joined a ladies-only gym and also went running together. As I continued losing weight, I noticed I was looking more toned, and in March last year I reached my target of 10st 5lbs. IVY COUNSELLING IS CELEBRATING ITS 6TH BIRTHDAY! By Yvonne and Diane of Ivy Counselling / Brighter Futures

Another year of continued success Six years ago, we launched Ivy Counselling and we are both wondering where those years have gone. We are absolutely delighted with our success and being in a position to have helped so many clients through unsettling periods, helping them to make positive change in their lives. We all experience times in our

lives when we find it difficult to cope, so the idea that counselling is mainly or only for people with mental health problems is a few decades out of date. People contact us for counselling from across a wide social spectrum, including social workers, police officers, directors, managers, nurses, parents and student counsellors to name a few. Many tell us they can obtain counselling from their place of work for free, however, they choose to engage with us as they know it is a confidential service and it is not time limited, therefore, we can work at their pace. We have recently taken on another qualified counsellor with a raft of experience, who has undergone a rigorous selection process as we will not falter from the high standards and professionalism we demand of ourselves here at Ivy Counselling. We believe YOU, the client,

Some of the issues we’ve worked through with clients include divorce & separation, depression, self harming, sexual problems, stress, trauma and anger management. How do you measure success? Over the last six years we have been moved and encouraged by the feedback from our clients and witnessing their growth, change and positive outlook as they leave the counselling relationship. We wish to thank everyone that has been involved over the last six years in helping us sustain what we set out to achieve – that is, a professional space for clients to access when they feel there is no light at the end of the tunnel.

wellness NEW YEAR, NEW YOU!

Royal Marine Rob Colley lives with his family in Ivybridge. Here, he talks about why F3E works for him. “You have to be fit and robust to be in the Marines. Keeping up my fitness and health is an important part of who I am. With a busy life working away a lot of the time, and as a husband and a dad, time off needs to be spent wisely. One way to do that is to enjoy keeping fit and healthy as a family. Even though Amy and I have completely different body types and training needs, we can workout together and enjoy an effective full-body workout in the same session. “Being able to train with Amy is really important. We can even bring the kids. We can workout on the same team and both benefit. It’s been really great for our relationship too!”

Dee Pickering’s winning culinary creation

A stunning scene of Santa sitting at a beautifully dressed table tucking into Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, made by care assistant Dee Pickering from Ivydene Residential and Nursing Home, was the winning creation in this year’s nationwide Sanctuary Care Christmas Cake Competition. Dee’s fabulously festive creation also scooped the vote for best design. Speaking about the win, Dee said: “I was over the moon and

shocked! I brought the cake into Ivydene to show the residents before the judging and they loved it, so it will be a lovely treat for them to have on Christmas Day.” Dee is a self-taught baker, perfecting her skills with videos on You Tube. Now in its 10th year, the cake contest tasks staff from Sanctuary Care’s homes across the country to make a traditional fruit Christmas cake, iced to their own unique design.

DEALING WITH PROBATE YOURSELF

NEW YEAR MARKETING RESOLUTIONS January wouldn’t be complete without a set of New Year resolutions and marketing is no different, says Jocelyn Wood of Fearless Marketing From my experience of working with various local businesses, here are my top five resolutions if you want to strengthen your marketing activity this year. 1. Be clear about what you want to achieve. Don’t just aim to increase sales – ask, from where? Which products? Who will you target? And include numbers, “to increase visitors to my website by 5% in three months”. Really focus the mind. 2. Set a budget. Experts suggest you set a budget of 7-8% of turnover if you want to grow your market share. But link it to activities with a purpose rather than just setting an amount and then working up (or down) to that figure. 3. Change your mindset. Marketing is an investment to create wealth, not a necessary but unwanted cost. Focus on what marketing can achieve, not “how can I save money?” or. “where can I cut costs?”. 4. Write a marketing plan. Fail to plan and you plan to fail. Just the rudimentary “What? Why? Where? When? Who? and How?” will suffice. It doesn’t need to be more complicated than that, but you could rotate through the cycle a few times by product or by market or by campaign – or just to clarify your thinking. 5. Define your market. Who are your customers? No really, who are they? Describe them like you would describe your mum. Then create tightly targeted but co-ordinated campaigns to specific groups of people rather than just putting your message “out there” and hoping it lands in the right place. It doesn’t matter whether you are a one man band, a family-owned business or employ a significant workforce, why don’t you create your own set of marketing resolutions? Don’t know where to start? FEARLESS MARKETING Be fearless in your marketing. If not now… when?

In tough economic times, it comes as no surprise that people are cost-cutting at every possible opportunity. This can, however, come at a large cost. When a loved one dies, you may be left with the responsibility of dealing with their estate, whether through a Will or through the laws of Intestacy. The role as a personal representative/executor is an important one, it is, however, one that should not be undertaken lightly. It is a common misconception that debts die with the deceased. If the estate is able to make payment of the debts, then you are under a duty to ensure that the debt is paid. You are not, however, personally responsible for the payment of debts owed by the estate if it is unable to pay it, unless you have made a mistake in the distribution. If you take on the role as an executor you may be personally responsible for: • Reduced value of estate assets (if you could have reasonably avoided it) – eg if you accepted a below-market price for the sale of a property. • Fines/interest imposed by Inland Revenue. • Expenditure which is normally reclaimable out of the estate (eg estate agents fees) where there is not sufficient money. • Overpayments to beneficiaries. Executors also have a duty to use an appropriate degree of care and skill, which includes ensuring that the assets are distributed in a timely manner as well as making sure that assets are secure/insured. If you are given the responsibility of administering someone’s estate, make sure you seek legal advice as soon as possible to ensure you’re not out of pocket.

RESOLVE I INNOVATE I SERVE I EXCEL www.GAsolicitors.com I 01752 203500

After the Christmas holidays, after all the mince pies, and the Christmas pudding with brandy butter, we all feel the need for a detox, perhaps, or to go to the gym. Our New Year’s resolutions are usually in terms of going on a diet and to the gym at least three times a week. Well, it is the same with putting your affairs in order. Fair enough that you don’t want to think about your Will or Lasting Power of Attorney over Christmas. But in January... With an entire year ahead, we should have a look at our Will and consider whether it needs updating. How long ago was it made? Have we perhaps divorced and remarried, or are we about to remarry or to enter into a civil partnership? Have we fallen out with one of our children? Or perhaps made up again? All these issues definitely call for a new Will and for some of them it would absolutely call for a Home Protection Trust, the ultimate bastion to protect your assets. A Home Protection Trust, amongst loads of benefits, makes sure that the assets you have put in it don’t need probate, thus reducing probate costs considerably. Perhaps now it’s time to think about it. And have we got a Lasting Power of Attorney? Yes, we now have all our marbles in the right place, but none of us know what the future holds? Do you know that, even if you have a joint account with your spouse, should you lose mental capacity, that account would be frozen? Do you know that should we be put into an unsuitable care home, there is no one legally enabled to fight our battles for us unless we have a Lasting Power of Attorney. The list goes on... So now think about it and most importantly, take those steps to protect your assets and, ultimately, the ones you love. For further information on any of our services please contact Richardsons Legal Services on 0800 014 8031. RLS is fully regulated and insured.

Erme Valley Harriers athletes have competed in considerable numbers in recent races at Newquay and Exeter (incorporating the Devon Championships). A junior netball club urgently needs more coaches so it can continue to provide opportunities for over 60 children to enjoy playing netball. At the moment, Ivbridge Junior Netball Club, which is open to all abilities from school year three upwards, has just one coach for the whole club. It is urgently appealing for level 1 or 2 coaches, or parent helpers, who can help with training. Without more coaches the club could fold in the New Year. Club training is on Wednesdays – yrs 7&8 5-6:15pm, H5 years 3-6 6:15-7pm and 7-8pm for yrs 9+ – in the main sports hall at Ivybridge CC. Matches are played on a Monday (older kids) or on Sunday for the five-a-side H5 games. î If you can help, contact club chairman Maggie Barker – kmugborough@gmail.com Joe Battershill and (left) Nathan Brown
