Two teams of year 6 children from The Moorsway Federation took part in this year’s Junior Ten Tors event on 8th-9th June. The children from The Erme, Cornwood Primary and Shaugh Prior Primary navigated themselves to 10 of Dartmoor’s tors over a day and a half, covering approximately 18-20 miles. Following three months of training, the children met at Cadover Bridge to start the challenge. In ideal weather for walking both teams reached the campsite near Princetown in the late afternoon. There they put up their tents and cooked themselves a simple meal. Day two saw the teams pack up camp and hike to their last few tors before meeting their proud parents at Leeden Tor.
Dartmoor Zoo has unveiled it newest resident, a six-year-old male common marmoset who has arrived to become Marmalade the marmoset’s (right) new partner. The boisterous marmoset, named Marvin by Dartmoor Zoo fans in a public poll, has settled in well with Marmalade, a two-year old female common marmoset who was left searching for a new friend after her previous companions passed away. Marmalade and her new beau have already become well acquainted and can be seen frolicking in the high tree branches of their enclosure. The zoo hopes that the love affair continues to blossom, and leads to a new breeding programme.
Two Ivybridge Theatre Company regulars will be treading the boards at the Theatre Royal Plymouth this month. Robin Lee (inset) and Tom Ingham will be performing in Western College Players’ Oliver Twist, portraying Mr Bumble and Bill Sikes respectively. This year marks 70 years since the release of David Lean’s classic movie version of Charles Dickens’ masterpiece, and Plymouth’s longest-established drama company have crafted an exceptional piece of theatre bringing vividly to life such beloved characters as Oliver, Dodger, Fagin, Sikes and Nancy. A group of Ivybridge Childminders met at Ivybridge library to begin Elmer Day celebrations. Seventeen children aged 0-4 years and seven of their childminders listened to an Elmer story read by librarian Sue and learnt some sign language alongside the story. After the story they played a hide-and-seek game where the children had to find all the pictures relating to the story which were dotted around the library. They then all had the chance to complete some colouring or make some Elephant ears.
SKITTLES CLUB LOOKING FOR LEAGUE TEAMS Erme Skittles Club, which has just completed its 55th season, is looking for teams to join their league. Currently, six teams compete but ideally a minimum of eight teams would be perfect. A team consists of six players (two or three reserves are advisable) and matches are played on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Westward Inn in Lee Mill. The season runs from October to May with the fixture list published in July/August. A league programme consists of approximately 20 matches, plus various cup competitions. i Interested? ‘SEE’ A DOCTOR ANYTIME, ANYWHERE Ivybridge Health Centre patients can now have an appointment with an experienced NHS GP at a time and place that suits them. Beacon Medical Group has partnered with Doctor Care Anywhere (DCA) to offer virtual patient appointments. This new service gives patients the convenience of seeing a GP from wherever they are. Whether
they are at work or at home on the sofa, simply log-on for the appointment and speak to an experienced NHS doctor. The sign up process only takes a couple of minutes to complete. Patients will need to create their DCA profile on the website by entering simple information like their date of birth, postcode, phone number and email
address. Once they have a DCA profile a patient can download the app and will be able to book appointments to see a GP. In the app, which is available for Apple and Android, a patient can both book appointments and have a consultation with a doctor. i For more information and to sign

feature Unlock the secrets of your home – or indeed those of any of Devon’s buildings – at a unique archive situated in the South Hams. Whether historic or modern, humble or grand, start the study of your home at the Devon Rural Archive (DRA). The archive’s unique collection and expert team will help you uncover the history of the building and people who have lived there. The DRA is based in the grounds of Shilstone House near Modbury and is dedicated to the study of Devon’s building and landscapes. A growing reference library of historic documents, maps, images, books, journals and periodicals, as well as a special collection of artefacts, and unpublished material makes the DRA an invaluable resource for Devon’s historians. “If you would like to know more about the history of your home pop into the archive during our opening hours and one of our team will be happy to help you kick-start your research,” says Abi Gray, resident archaeologist. The library is also the sole repository for an ongoing research project into the history, significance and development of Devon’s manor houses, and their associated landscapes, by the DRA’s archaeological team. ‘Project Donn’, as it is known, was launched in 2006 and uses the 1765 map of Devon by Benjamin Donn to identify sites for inclusion in the study. More than 650 gentry’ seats were represented by Donn, and to date the DRA team has visited, surveyed and recorded over 150 of these. The premise of the project is that by the latter half of the 18th century these high-status houses were unlikely to have been constructed on greenfield sites. Instead,

they occupied long-established dwelling sites which could hold evidence from the later medieval period, but possibly even pre-conquest data as well. By studying these sites, the standing structures and their environs, the DRA is able to reveal the evolution of architecture in Devon through the last millennia, and ensure the information is preserved for future generations. Shilstone, the home of the DRA, is a prime example of the project’s success. Here there is evidence of occupation from later prehistory to the present day. The earliest known dwelling on the site was an Iron Age farmstead, within an ovoid enclosure, in use from approximately the second century BC to
EARLY VICTORIAN DEVON: AN AGE OF OPULENCE AND OPTIMISM An illustrated talk by historian Dr David Parker Thursday, 5th July, at the Devon Rural Archive – starting at 7pm The early decades of Queen Victoria’s reign saw the country on the threshold of the modern world and besieged with radical new ideas and emerging technologies. Reverberating across Devon were the national controversies over the poor, mass education, and the franchise, and contentious Acts of Parliament that sought solutions. In this richly-illustrated talk, Dr Parker will

the second century AD. A high-status stone hall house, of three-room cross-passage plan, was at the centre of the site by the 14th century and, along with 16th and 17th century additions, was the structure recorded by Benjamin Donn. This house was demolished in the early 19th century and replaced by a courtyard mansion that was heavily truncat-

THE “IVYBRIDGE AEROPLANE” In 1918, the National War Savings Committee organised a movement to raise money for the war effort through the sale of War Bonds and War Savings Certificates. Local associations, including one in Ivybridge, worked tirelessly to sell these bonds and certificates, which were designed to be affordable for ordinary people. A £1 certificate cost 15s 6d to buy and could be redeemed five years later free of tax. Lending to the government was a secure prospect, assuming the war ended favourably. One-off weekly campaigns, targeting particular communities or professions, proved to be a successful tactic. For War Weapons Week (recorded in the Ivybridge parish magazine as being July 1st-July 6th, 1918), the authorities gave Ivybridge an incentive. If the local association was able to secure investments in War Bonds and War Savings Certificates totalling £4,500, an aeroplane would be named after the village. In August 1918, the parish magazine was pleased to confirm that a total of £4,600 had been invested, exceeding the target. The local members of the War Savings Committee were indebted to the
efforts of the community of Ivybridge, in particular to the ladies who canvassed the village and the Boy Scouts who distributed War Savings leaflets. The Royal Air Force, founded only a few months earlier, came to play an important role during WWI, as ground offensives slowed to trench warfare. Many types of aircraft emerged, from out-and-out fighters to reconnaissance aircraft, night bombers and ground-attack planes. Current research has been unable to trace a record of the Ivybridge aeroplane, suggesting that it never went into service, or perhaps was never even built with the end of the war only months away. However, the naming of an aeroplane provided some welcome cheer for the local community, amongst the steady stream of heart-breaking news and loss of young lives. i More details from the parish magazine of 1918 along

EGG-CITING After Easter, class 1 at Cornwood Primary School put seven eggs to incubate. The children’s patience was rewarded at the beginning of May, when tiny cracks started to appear and over the course of a week all seven hatched out. Unfortunately, three
sadly died but the school now has four healthy chicks living out on the lawn at school and are quite the celebrities! All the children love talking to them and looking after them every play time and lunchtime, and they are looking forward to them laying their very first egg!

PLASTIC FREE Sparkwell Primary School has been awarded the Plastic Free school award in recognition of the work they have been doing to raise awareness of the damage caused by plastic in the oceans. To achieve the award the school had to meet five objectives that included writing to Parliament, running a beach clean, contacting local businesses and reducing single-use plastic in schools. The school is looking forward to a busy few weeks before the end of term with many sports events, trips to Dartmoor, Saltram House, Plymouth University and the aquarium as well as our family camp and sports day.

BLUE PLANET As part of their learning for the ‘Blue Planet’ project, five artists from year 3 and 4 at The Erme had the opportunity to take part in an art day at Ugborough Primary School. The children learnt lots of new skills and used a range of materials to create artwork out of single-use plastic and other recyclable materials. Their creativity was inspired by jelly fish and the ocean. BEACH TRIP Year 3 at Yealmpton Primary School had a fantastic time at Wembury Beach. They explored rock pools, went on scavenger hunts and searched for minibeasts.

CHAMPIONS The Year 5 rounders team from Stowford School will compete in the County Summer Games at Brickfields, Plymouth, after winning the rounders tournament at Okehampton. The team won all three matches in their pool before beating Newton Ferrers 10½-6½ in the final, with Josh completing four solo rounders. The success followed on from the team coming out on top in
the earlier round of the competition held at ICC, where Stowford faced Newton Ferrers and the top three teams from the Kingbridge learning community, Averton Gifford, Dartmouth and Loddiswell. By the end of the competition three teams had the same number of points so the total number of rounders scored was used to determine the winner – Stowford with a total of 27.5.
MUSIC WORKSHOP Two pupils from year 5 at The Erme had an exciting opportunity to visit Manor Primary School to take part in a music workshop led by the musician David Haines. The children were able to share their knowl-
edge about plastic pollution in our oceans and work collaboratively with children from other primary schools to write their own song. Mr Haines is busy producing their song and the children cannot wait to hear the finished final piece.

and spun tricks on mountain boards. Two highlights of the week included a record turnout for the brisk early morning swim in the Bude sea pool and the children who volunteered for karaoke in the evening.

lunch on the field, followed by a tea party in the afternoon for the whole school community, with cakes brought in by the children and prizes for the best decorated. The event raised a fantastic £330 for ‘Surfers Against Sewage’ – one of the charities chosen by Harry and Meghan to benefit from this special occasion.

There will be family fun on The Yealm at this year’s annual Yealmpton duck race on Sunday, 15th July, starting at 11am from Torr Bridge. As well as the race, there will be a barbecue and refreshments at Pimple Rock. Prizes will be awarded at Yealmpton Sports Field at 3pm. Ducks are £1, available from local shops. South Brent Folk presents the 7th annual South Brent Folk Day on Saturday, 7th July, with singing, music, dancing, workshops and concerts around the village. what’s on YEALMPTON SHOW Celebrate all that is great about country living at this year’s Yealmpton Agricultural Show on Wednesday, 25th July. The show at Kitley Lawns opens at 9am and promises fun and entertainment for all the family. Across the showground there will be show jumping, cattle, sheep, pigs, poultry, homecrafts, floral art, horticulture and trade stands. The main ring has a packed programme including Landrover display, vintage tractors, parade of hounds, YFC tractor pull, livestock parade and Pony Club mounted games. The main attraction is undoubtedly The Devil’s Horsemen’s fully choreographed show of trickriding, a Roman-riding race, liberty acts, carousel displays and a classical high school dressage display with full commentary and background music. PIONEERING PROGRAMME TO PREVENT DIABETES An innovative new programme to prevent people developing Type 2 diabetes has been launched in Devon to coincide with last month’s National Diabetes Week. Healthier Devon is a new support programme for people at the highest risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Once referred by their GP, these people will receive sustained help, through a combination of one-to-one and group sessions, over a two-year period to make positive changes to their lifestyle. Around 79,000 people in the county are at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. Many of the risk factors associated with developing Type 2 diabetes are preventable through lifestyle changes. Devon County Council’s cabinet member for health and well-being, Cllr Roger Croad, said: “This programme, which is the first of its type in the UK offering two years of sustained support, has the potential to make a significant impact on the health

By tackling it early enough, the programme not only enables people to turn their health outcomes around in the short term, but also provides the support to help people sustain long-term changes to their lifestyle, and their health.” Sarah Miller, Healthier Devon facilitator at Exminster-based charity Westbank Community Health and Care, who are coordinating the initiative, said: “Our supportive programme will include sessions on healthy eating, nutrition and cooking, exercise, and positive mental well-being. Participants will create realistic goals which we will help them to work towards over the two-year programme.” Patients who are eligible to join Healthier Devon will be referred for an appointment by their GP surgery through the Devon Referral Support Service.

WILLS: THE HARD FACTS Ask anybody why they must have a Will and the standard answer is: “because I have to”. Yes, you have to... But why? Why go to a professional Will writer, when you can simply pop to your local supermarket, write a few things, ask your mates to witness it, and voilà! Job done... Let’s imagine (in my case it’s not imagination, because I have seen it happen not long ago) what is going to happen... In the past, you had fallen out with your son, so he is not in your Will. Your ex-wife, who has not remarried, is also not in your Will; did you know that they have claims on your estate under the Inheritance Act 1975? You left your children that compensation that you never got, or

you have left the house to a friend of yours... You also didn’t date your Will... Now what? There are an increasing number of home-made Wills being contested and of home-made Wills not being attested properly – just what solicitors are waiting for!! Not only is there heartache for those left behind, but so much money must be spent that the cost of litigation outweighs any saving you might have had by not going to a professional Will writer. Why are Will writers so important? The obvious answer is they are trained to do exactly that – write Wills. But writing Wills doesn’t consist only of jotting down notes about what somebody wants to leave to whom. It involves making sure that people who give Will
instructions have got mental capacity, that they understand what they are doing and that they are not influenced by anybody else. A Will writer is also an estate planning Practitioner and this skill comes in handy with clients who have big estates. Advice can be given to better protect assets and make sure that beneficiaries inherit them. Perhaps a Home Protection Trust is needed. After a Will writer sees a client, he/she must write extensive notes on the client’s mental capacity, whether there were contentious issues in the instructions and what is the advice to that particular client. A court will give great importance to the Will writer’s notes should a Will be contested. Will writers’
notes become evidence at a later date when somebody has passed away and can no longer explain what he/she has done. So, a Will writer is not only “somebody who writes a Will”. They are somebody on your side that will make sure that your Will reflects what you want and who will protect your wishes by writing notes every time he/she sees you or when something important has been discussed on the phone. IN THE SUMMER TIME So far, May and most of June has seen the moor bask in glorious sunshine. Weekends have been busy with locals and visitors enjoying the landscape, beautiful riverside sites and generally having fun. After a very wet winter, the ranger team has finally been able to start catching up on some of its rights of way work across the 500 miles of footpaths and bridlepaths which criss-cross Dartmoor. You may find during July that some paths become impassable due to vegetation overgrowth. DNPA has a policy of not strimming or clearing the paths until the end of the bird nesting season
(end of July) as it is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 to disturb nesting birds; paths will be cleared in August and September. We’ve recently been discussing with the landowners of both Harford and Ugborough moors the ongoing erosion problems in these areas. Both landowners and DNPA have been monitoring and recording the erosion sites and are now working together to find suitable solutions/repairs. The long hot days have encouraged one of the rarer and less seen animals on Dartmoor to come out of hiding and bask in the sun – we are getting increased

There are three types of snakes to be found in Britain (descriptions from www.woodlandtrust.org.uk): n Adder, Vipera berus The only venomous reptile in the UK, but is generally shy and non-aggressive. Fairly small and stocky. It can be variable in colour, with males being usually grey and the females reddish brown. Both sexes have a distinctive diamond shaped or zigzag pattern along their backs. n Grass snake, Natrix natrix Non-venomous, it is the largest snake in the UK. The dorsal surface is green or brown with dark bars and a yellow or cream and

Similar to the adder but the dark spots or stripes on the back are not the well-formed zigzag pattern of the adder. It is very rare for people to be bitten by snakes, however dogs can often disturb the snakes and can get a nasty bite, normally on the nose. If this happens try to stay calm, try to keep your dog calm and take your dog to the nearest available vet where normally an anti-venom can be administered.

THE BURDEN OF ARE YOU A MICROBEING AN EXECUTOR ENTREPRENEUR? The death of a loved one is a traumatic experience, and dealing with your loved one’s estate can be overwhelming. Each institution has different requirements to release monies. In many instances, a Grant of Probate may not be required. However, even if the institutions will pay monies without a Grant, if the assets exceed £5,000 (including half of joint assets), then a Grant should be obtained. Executors have various legal duties and responsibilities to ensure that the estate is dealt with correctly, eg dealing with the tax office, paying debts and placing monies into trust. Executors have personal liability if they fail to deal with the estate correctly and may find themselves in the position of having to personally pay debts or claims by beneficiaries if they fail in this duty.
Executors should put in place Statutory Notices (not family death notices) to protect themselves. Failing to do so may result in creditors pursuing the executor personally for up to six years. They must also ensure beneficiaries are not bankrupt by undertaking appropriate searches and should wait six months from the Grant before paying monies to beneficiaries. Although many people attempt to deal with the estate themselves, they often ask a solicitor to simply obtain the Grant for them to save stress, worry and time. Having a neutral third party also helps where executors and beneficiaries come into conflict with one another. NATIONAL CUP WINNERS
Year 10 student Jack Craigie cycled 100 miles from the North Coast of Devon to the south coast to raise money for Crohns and Collitis UK. Jack was diagnosed with Crohns Disease in 2015 aged 12, following seven months of his parents fighting to get a diagnosis after their, once very active son,

struggled to keep food down and battled chronic fatigue. Jack now has regular infusions and daily medication to help manage his condition. Through his fundraising, he hopes that other children and their families won’t have to go through the long drawn-out diagnosis process that he endured.
It was third time lucky for Ivybridge Community College when they won the English Schools Football Association Under 13 National Cup for B Teams in May at Stoke City’s Bet365 stadium. Having twice been losing finalists in national football competitions, the Year 8 team thrashed Wright Robinson College, from Manchester, 9-3. Kyle Duffy opened the scoring after just 90 seconds, capitalising on a goalkeeping error, before
notching again three minutes later and completing his hat-trick inside 10 minutes. Wright Robinson College pulled two goals back before Duffy scored his fourth goal five minutes before half time. The second half was one-way traffic, with Jay Lapthorn also netting a hat-trick to make it 7-2. Wright Robinson College pulled a goal back before Lapthorn and Duffy scored one apiece. At the final whistle the Ivybridge players celebrated making College history, before captain Josh Howley lifted the trophy.

JAKE QUALIFIES FOR THE HORSE OF THE YEAR SHOW SUPPORTING ‘THE ROWING MARINE’ A mufti day in aid of the ‘The Rowing Marine’ charity raised an amazing £2,083.41. College principal Rachel Hutchinson presented Lee Spencer, aka ‘The Rowing Marine’, with a cheque on one of his visits
to the school. Lee has visited the college on several occasions to give moving, inspirational and motivational speeches across a number of year groups, and on the day of his visit he addressed an assembly of Year 10 students. Year 9 student Jake Myers has qualified for the Horse of the Year Show for the second year running. Over the spring bank holiday weekend, Jake competed at Southview in Cheshire at the 138cm Horse of the Year Show qualifier. He competed on Eddy (The Agent) and not only qualified once again for the Horse of the
Year Show, but won the class, being the only treble clear. This remarkable achievement mirrored the previous year in which he was again the only treble clear. Jake and Eddy have already this year qualified for the Royal International Horse Show at Hickstead at the end of July, as well as Bolesworth International.

Erme Valley Harriers’ Emma Lake has been particularly busy in recent weeks and has done exceptionally well in the Plymouth Half Marathon, Bere Pen 10K and the gruelling Dartmoor Discovery. In the Plymouth Half, Craig MacLellan was the first Harrier home in a time of 1.28.30. Emma Lake (1.30.56) was 4th lady and 1st fv40, while Cleo Perry (1.31.33) was 7th lady and 1st fv45. Rebecca Lee continued her recent good form with a personal best time. In the Bere Pen 10K, Emma Lake continued her good form as she was 3rd lady, while Simon Swift was 1st mv50 and Ken Summers 1st mv65. There was a great turnout by the Harriers’ at the 20th anniversary of the Dartmoor Discovery. This tough race covers 35 miles on Dartmoor. Mike Hoskin (5.09.28) was the first Harrier home and was closely followed by Emma Lake (5.13.48) and Sarah Hirons (5.16.48). Lake was 3rd lady and Hirons 4th lady. Both ladies won their age categories. Ken Summers also did well and was 2nd mv65. Meanwhile, Neil Holmes had a fantastic run to finish in 5th

place in the Race the Tide run. This started in Mothecombe, with Holmes covering the 28.4 mile distance in 4.44.35. Patrick Wakeley (2.29.54) and Mark Livermore (3.08.24) competed in the 15 mile race. In the Ottery 10K, Andy Newcombe was 35th in 42.56 and Dan Marks 87th in 49.30. Paddy Trinder (40.22) was 15th in the Burrator 10K, with Alison McEwing just behind him in 40.25. Suzie Spooner was successful at the Buckland Bounder 6 mile multi-terraen race at Buckland Monachorum as she was first lady in 52.07. TEIGNMOUTH is an historic port on the mouth of the Teign Estuary with two different characters. Along the seaward edge of the town is “the Den”, a large area with lawn and flower beds running between the promenade and an elegant Georgian crescent. There is a pier, theatre and children’s play area and a miniature lighthouse. There is a long beach and on the northern end of the beach a sea wall which separates the railway line from a long footpath. On the estuary side, the town is alive with waterside inns, a busy harbour with boats for hire and a ferry to take you across to picturesque Shaldon just across the water. DAWLISH is a pretty resort famed for its black swans in the heart of the town beside the river. In the centre of the town there is a park called the Lawn, an attractive spot for families to play and relax amongst chestnut trees, the river, colourful flower beds and tall palms. Another glorious train journey – this time up the beautiful Luxulyan Valley – to the seaside family favourite of Newquay. Whilst providing a surfer’s paradise with the iconic Fistral Beach, Newquay offers many gentler bathing beaches well suited to families with young children (for example, Harbour and Towan Beaches). Take a trip on the scenic Looe Valley Line and explore the natural beauty of South East Cornwall.
