Scouts plant for future Ivybridge & District Community Transport Association volunteer enabler Richard Green has been recognised at a prestigious awards ceremony.
Richard received the accolade at the Devon Community Transport Awards at a celebration event at County Hall in Exeter. The awards recognise outstanding
contributions to community transport in Devon. Richard is pictured receiving his award from Devon County Council chairman, cllr Andrew Moulding.
MEN WHO LIKE SHEDS WANTED FOR EXCITING PROJECT Men who like sheds are invited to a public meeting this month to explore the development of a Men’s Shed project in Ivybridge. The meeting, on Thursday, 21st July, in the café area in The Watermark from 7-8.30pm, is open to anyone interested in finding out about the initiative. Men’s Sheds is a growing phenomenon across the UK. It usually involves a larger version of the typical man’s garden shed. A Men’s Shed offers this facility to a group of men, where members share the tools and resources they need to work on projects of their own choosing, at their own pace and in a safe, friendly and
inclusive venue. They are places of skill-sharing and informal learning, of individual pursuits and community projects, of purpose, achievement and social interaction. A Shed’s activities usually involve making or mending in wood (e.g. carpentry, joinery, turning, carving, whittling, marquetry, furniture renovation) but may include metalworking (milling, sheet metal, welding, etc.) bike repair, gardening, electronics, tool renovation, boat renovation, model engineering (model railways, planes) and even building a car! On the 21st July, Jo Phillips, from the Royal Voluntary Service, who
is the National Sheds Manager, will be on hand to explain how the projects work in other places and to provide ideas for how to make it happen in Ivybridge. If this sounds like something you’d like to get involved in or you know of a vacant workshop or garage that could be the perfect ‘shed’ please come along on the 21st July in the Watermark at 7pm to share your ideas. The initiative is being led by South Hams CVS, which has teamed up with Drink Wise Age Well and RVS for the project. Victoria Park was the focus of a community tree planting day by the enthusiastic 1st Ivybridge Scout Group. The Scout Movement is celebrating its centenary year, with each pack asked to plant an oak tree and the day proved the perfect opportunity to do so in the local park. The planting is part of a project to plant trees and shrubs to replace those lost in recent years, with a view to improving the park landscape with species popular in Victorian times.

A farewell Mass was held at St Austin’s Priory to mark the official end of the Augustinian Recollects in Ivybridge. Since 1932 the Augustinian Recollect Friars have been serving the Roman Catholic parish of Ivybridge together with Modbury.
Views wanted from event organisers
In the early days of the Priory, students from the Catholic priesthood in the Recollect Order received some of their training there before going to missions in the Philippines and South America. The Priory was built by a group of
French nuns in 1912 and the church was dedicated to The Sacred Heart. Fittingly, the service was held on the Feast of the Sacred Heart (3rd June) by Fr Sean Flannery O.A.R., the retiring Parish priest, and the Mass was con-cellebrated by nine priests.

The once neglected pond area in Woodlands Park has been transformed thanks to the initiative of a group of residents. They contacted SHDC to offer help to clear the pond after it had become overgrown and contaminated with weeds and various items of household rubbish. Since then, the area has been meticulously maintained by local resident Roger Richards, who not only keeps the pond free from contamination, but has also planted shrubs and hundreds of daffodils in the pond area. The space is now a pleasant area to picnic, chat or simply enjoy the surroundings and the wildlife that the pond provides a habitat for.
Pet shop birthday Erme View Pet Supplies in Glanvilles Mill will celebrate its first birthday on 18th July. Sandra Coker took the plunge and opened the new business last year and hasn’t looked back. If you organise events in your town or village, South Hams District Council is giving you the chance to have your say on how it supports local events in the future. SHDC has launched a consultation with residents and other interested parties on the way it helps communities and local groups to organise and run events. A large number of events are currently supported across the district, from major festivals and regattas to smaller village and community events. The way the council supports these events varies depending on the event and how it is organised and whether it is organised for commercial or community gain. “At the moment, we support events in a variety of ways, from leasing land, to organising an alcohol licence and clearing up after an event,” explained cllr Ian Bramble. “But before we write a new policy on how we should offer these services, we would like to hear from those people who use them.” The consultation will help the district council determine its future event management policy, including determining which elements should be chargeable, and what any charge should be, and which shouldn’t. RECOUNTING LIFE IN THE TOWN O OO REMEMBERING THE FALLEN
T
he Battle of the Somme has somehow become one of the iconic actions of the Great War and many local men were involved in it, experiencing the horrors of battle at first hand and for the first time. Three battalions of the Devonshire Regiment (the 2nd, 8th and 9th) were put to the test. The 9th Battalion was one of the few British units to reach its initial objectives on the first day of the battle, an achievement that came at terrible cost. The 9th Devons jump off point was a trench close to a small woodland called Mansell Copse, and their objective was the village of Mametz, held by the Germans. Captain Duncan Martin was worried by a German machine gun located beside the shrine in a civilian cemetery which overlooked the open ground his men would have to attack across – known as Shrine Alley. Martin was right. Of the 775 soldiers of the 9th Devons who attacked at dawn on July 1st, 463 were dead, missing or wounded. All save one of the battalion’s officers was unscathed. Much of the damage was inflicted by that machine gun. Meanwhile, the 8th Devons formed part of Brigade reserve on 1st July. It was soon in action and suffered 208 casualties. A and B companies were decimated by the same machine gun overlooking Shrine Alley. At about 3.30pm C Company, 8th Devons was ordered forward. The officer commanding C Company was Lieutenant Eric Savill. Having seen the carnage taking place in Shrine Alley, Savill used his initiative and chose to take an alternative route. Using cover provided by a slight rise in the ground to the north west of Mansell Copse, C Company achieved its objective – the Hidden Wood – with light casualties. At the end of the first day of the Battle of the Somme the bodies of 161 soldiers from the
The digitised records of the burials in St John’s churchyard have been handed over to the Rev Chris Osborne by Ivybridge Heritage and Archives Group. This ambition project has chronicled the 5,500 records of the Woodlands Road Cemetery and the churchyard. Burials from 1835 to date are now in alphabetical order, together with their location and dates. Many enquiries are received asking for information about ancestors who lived in Ivybridge, from as far away as Australia and Canada, and these can now been answered. Devonshire Regiment were retrieved from where they had fallen. They were carried back to the front line trench position and buried in a section of it. On 4th July a ceremony was held at the burial site. A wooden cross was put up at the time by the survivors. Carved on the cross was the inscription: “The Devonshires held this trench, the Devonshires hold it still”. The graves were left in this position when the cemeteries were rebuilt after the war and 163 graves are now contained in the ‘Devonshire Cemetery’. The words of the original inscription are now on a stone memorial at the cemetery entrance. The dead include Captain Duncan Lenox Martin and the poet, Lieutenant William Noel Hodgson. Given the carnage of the first day of the Battle of the Somme, it is surprising that not a single Ivybridge soldier was killed that day.
BATTLE OF THE SOMME REMEMBRANCE EVENT Ivybridge residents are invited to a special commemoration event to mark the centenary of the start of the Battle of the Somme, and honour those who fell. The town’s Royal British Legion is hosting a candle-lit service at Harry’s Patch on Friday, 1st July, at 9.45pm where the community, together with RBL branch members and local dignitaries, will collectively commemorate the start of the Battle of the Somme 100 years ago to the day. People are invited to bring candles or lanterns and gather at Harry’s Patch where there will be poem readings as the dreadful losses 100 years ago, including the grave losses experienced by the Devonshire Regiment on the first day of the battle, are remembered.

Year 3 children from Stowford School rounded off their work on the “Amazing Amazon Rainforest” with a trip to the Eden Project. The visit gave them the chance to experience first hand the humidity of the rainforest climate and to learn more about the plants that grow there. The main focus of the visit was to take part in the Rainforest Rangers’ experience, where the children got the opportunity to role play what life was like for rangers working in the rainforest. Afterwards they headed into the rainforest Biome with their guide, looking for plants that could give water, shelter or food.
Manor Primary School’s ‘Helpful Club’ (above) made a birthday card for the Queen and were thrilled to receive a reply and a photograph of the monarch. Her Majesty thanked them for their good wishes, and an accompanying letter informed them that she had enjoyed their art work and their kind words.
FRIENDSHIP DAY Activities to highlight the importance of being a good friend took place during a special Friendship Day at Manor School. Families were invited to a special breakfast, and each class created a ‘friendship tree’ with pictures of their friends and words to describe them and their special qualities.
Pupils in years 4 and 6 at Woodlands Park Primary School have enjoyed trips to residential adventure centres. The annual year 6 residential at Bude was a tremendous success for children in their last year at the school. Activities included kayaking and high ropes. For the first time, pupils in year 4 went to the Heatree Activity Centre on Dartmoor National Park. The River Scramble, whereby the children followed the course of a river upstream, overcoming natural obstacles like small waterfalls and fallen tree trunks, proved to be the children’s favourite.

Children of all ages at Ivybridge’s primary schools had a right royal knees-up to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. At Manor Primary (above), the children learned about the Royal Family while preparing for a Royal garden party. All the children’s families were invited, as well as local elderly residents. All the children and staff dressed in red, white and blue, the younger children made royal crowns to
wear and in the morning everyone joined in with a whole-school rendition of the National Anthem. There was plenty of artwork on display for the afternoon, with each class contributing to a whole school collage of the Queen, and each child had also painted their own portraits which were on dis-
play. Stowford School celebrated the Queen’s 90th birthday in red, white and blue fashion. In the run up to the celebration, all the children designed and made crowns, in honour of her majesty’s wonderful hat collection, and flags. They also learnt to
sing the National Anthem and learnt to sing Gary Barlow’s Diamond Jubilee song. On the day of their special birthday party, they had a picnic and then met in the school hall to sing the songs they had learnt and to watch a special birthday broadcast from Windsor Castle.

RANGERS What’s on this summer on Dartmoor? Dartmoor Rangers are not only busy with path works and managing honey pot sites during the summer, says Ella Briens. They are ‘out and about’ on the Dartmoor National Park stands at local shows and events We try to attend most of the major agricultural shows but also go to other family, wildlife and community events around Dartmoor. I was at the Buckfastleigh Fun Day on the millennium green, with activities and information all relating to Dartmoor – not forgetting the ‘duck-race’ too! Shows give us the chance to demonstrate the work of the authority and also the opportunity to promote ‘up and coming’ guided walks, archaeological and wildlife events, volunteering tasks, Ranger Ralph Club and Junior Rangers. This summer we have a whole variety of events, across Dartmoor, that we are attending and/or running, including: Rangers at shows: Sunday 31st July – Totnes Show, Bill Allen; Thursday 11th August – Okehampton Show, Ian Brooker; Saturday 13th August – Manaton Show & Fayre, Bill Allen; Sunday 14th August – Hennock Fayre, Simon Lee; Thursday 18th August – Chagford Show, Pete Rich; Saturday 20th August – Christow Show, Simon Lee; Tuesday 13th September – Widecombe Fair. The things you need to consider if you’re starting your own business Starting a business can be exciting and rewarding, but also very frightening. Simon Jilks shares some basic things to consider as you ponder your business start-up idea A good place to start would be finance – what do you need, and how are you going to get it? This is a topic all in itself, which I will elaborate more on next month, but it’s vital to know what initial set up costs you are going to need to cover. This might include deposit and rent for your office or shop, initial stock, equipment, fit out, branding/advertising, insurance, to name but a few. Make a list but keep it simple, I’ve seen too many new businesses over spend in the early stages, putting huge pressure on cash flow for years to come, so try and concentrate on the vital things; you can always replace or upgrade as you grow. This might sound boring but put together a cash flow forecast, does it work? A business should make financial
sense and without some sort of estimate of income and expenditure it’s easy to lose control. This is the main reason most businesses fail in the first year or two, rather than the idea itself wasn’t good in the first place. Make sure you register with any regulatory bodies such as HMRC, who will need to know you’ve started in business, as well as any other bodies specific to your business. Consider VAT registration. If you expect your annual turnover to be more than £83,000, then you should register. Consider which business vehicle is best for you – ie sole trader, partnership, LLP or company. All have their merits, but it is important to know the difference. Last, but not least, get advice from a good, local accountant!

“Different down there” 10 signs you might have a prolapse – and what to do about it BY HELENA COSTIFF Cornwood Physiotherapy
To my surprise I discovered that June was ‘Prolapse Awareness Month’. It wasn’t very well publicized, but that was no surprise as neither is the issue of prolapse. But here’s the thing – at least 50% of women who have had a baby by vaginal birth will have some degree of prolapse. That’s a lot of people. So even if you aren’t living with a prolapse, someone you know will be. Pelvic organ prolapse occurs when the ligaments and connective tissue that support the bladder, bowel or womb become weakened or strained and this may allow them to lean or lower a bit in all sorts of different directions. There are many different signs of prolapse but you might become aware of: • Sensation of heaviness or
pulling in the vagina
• Distinct bulge in the vagina • Persistent ache in the low back or groin and/or… • Trouble passing urine or stools • Incomplete bladder emptying • Bladder leakage with coughing, sneezing • Bladder or bowel urgency • Frequent passing of urine

• Painful or difficult sexual intercourse or difficulty using a tampon. Don’t worry! Help is out there! See your GP and/or seek a specialist physiotherapy assessment. The correct pelvic floor rehabilitation has been shown to dramatically reduce the symptoms of

prolapse and in mild to moderate cases to structurally improve it. So much so in fact that I treat many people referred to me by consultant gynaecologists with the expectation of avoiding surgery. Even those people who eventually require surgery stand to benefit from improving the function of their pelvic floor before and after surgery. In the meantime, to lessen your risk it’s worth avoiding heavy lifting, constipation and high impact activities as well as watching your weight and stopping smoking – all things that can weaken and put extra pressure on your pelvic floor muscles. Trusts – the facts, not internet misconceptions There is a lot of incorrect and misleading information on the internet regarding Trusts. There are many different types of Trust – for example, our life interest Home Protection Trust is not the same thing as a Protective Property Trust or a totally discretionary Trust. This is a very specialist subject, so it is easy to misinterpret some of the information out there, leading to unnecessary worries if you are considering a Trust. Therefore, we have brought together some frequently asked questions and the answers to help you sort fact from fiction. Q. When does protection start? A. Protection starts immediately after you put anything into the Trust, be it your home, cash assets, shares etc. Q. Can my beneficiaries sell my home and spend the money after my death? A. Yes they can. They can sell it and split the money in accordance with your Trust instruction, or they can rent it out. And they can do these things immediately.

Q. Do I have complete control of my property in Trust? A. Yes you have absolute control just the same as now. Q. Do I have flexibility to do whatever I want with my property in Trust? A. Yes. Everything you can do now you can still do. Nothing changes. You can move home and the new home automatically goes into Trust. You can downsize and spend the money left over. You can even sell your home and spend the money as you like. Q. What if the government changes the law? A. Trust law is well established over centuries and even if loopholes are plugged in the future the government has never made this retrospective. There would be such an outcry if they did this, and remember that many MPs themselves have Trusts.
Q. What happens if I want to move home? A. Your put your home up for sale in the normal way and your conveyancer will automatically convey your new home into Trust. Q. How do I put money into my Trust and how do I spend it? A. You simply go to your bank and ask them to open a Trust account for you. You then deposit money into the account in the normal way. You may wish to open a savings account and a current account. You can then get interest and transfer money between accounts and write cheques for whatever you want. Q. Are there any ongoing costs to a trust? A. No. There is nothing really to do once the Trust is set up. It could be, however, that you want to add or remove a beneficiary or trustee, in which case there is a small amount of paperwork we will do for you at a very nominal cost. Unlike a Will, which would need to be rewritten, the Trust does not need to be rewritten; it is just a supplementary piece of paperwork that has to be raised.
Q. What happens if Richardsons Legal Services goes bust and have not finished our work? A. Very unlikely situation, but if it were to happen, the Society of Will Writers and Estate Planning Practitioners would appoint another local firm to complete the work and pay for it. As full Society members we have paid into a disaster fund to cover this eventuality. And for after sales service the Society would appoint another local member to look after our clients' future needs. Q. What happens if I need advice in the future? A. We do not charge for advice, we only charge if we do work for you. Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council Ivybridge Neighbourhood Plan
Last summer, Ivybridge Neighbourhood Plan group consulted with local residents about the emerging plan for the town and had feedback from organisations and individuals. A leaflet and advertisement in The Ivybridge magazine ensured that
everyone had information on the plan, supplemented by short videos on the Town Council Facebook page and group members explaining the proposals at events like the Lions’ Funday and outside the Co-Op. Since then, discussions have been held with public sector bodies and other organisations that are required to ensure that policies in the document do not conflict with national planning policy and that any proposals can be properly enforced. This had taken rather
longer than had been hoped but full background to the decisions which were taken by the Steering Group at their meeting in May 2016 can be viewed on the Town Council website – www.ivybridge.gov.uk Once the amendments have been made, the plan is submitted to South Hams District Council and then onwards to an Inspector. When it has been considered and any amendments made it will then be put to a public vote to ensure that Ivybridge residents support
the proposals made. We have to ensure that our plan conforms with the existing South Hams District Council plan, but we are also mindful that the new district-wide plan will be open for consultation in the summer, so we have had to be careful that our policies don’t conflict with those in the emerging district-wide plan (which is quite difficult as we don’t yet know what is in that!) We hope that everyone will agree with our Vision for the town – as shown in this article – which aims to be broad enough to reflect our ambitions for Ivybridge, reflecting feedback from focus groups and residents, but not too generic that it could be any town in the country! INSPIRATIONAL TALK Members of Ivybridge Flower Club were delighted to welcome florist Elaine Reynolds to their June meeting. Elaine, from Delabole, has visited the club on previous occasions and always entertains with her tales of her work with the cast and crew of Doc Martin, which is filmed in Port Isaac. Elaine is a very talented florist and used an excellent assortment of well-conditioned flowers and plant materials in her designs based on the title ‘inspirational fun and flowers’. Also at the meeting, tickets were on sale for a Cream Tea garden meeting in July and details of the final two classes being held before the summer break were announced. The club’s next meeting is on 11th July, at The Watermark at 7.30pm when the demonstrator is Area Demonstrator, Joan Trewin, whose title is “Essence of summer”. Visitors are welcome, £6. SUMMER COMEDY Members of Ivybridge Theatre Company take to the boards at The Watermark later this month for a comedy double bill. The Comedy Double Bill features two short plays from very different eras. ‘A Mad Breakfast’ by Isabel McReynolds Gray is set in the dining room of a 1950s boarding house with various guests arriving for breakfast. Misconceptions abound and hilarity ensues as chaos tops confusion, soon causing one of the new guests to fear for their life! ‘A Jolly Sinister Jape’ by Elliot Strange is a madcap comedy set in the 1920s, with a liberal sprinkling of hilarious period slang, along with mystery and thrills. It wouldn’t be a mystery without a large house on a stormy night with a thunderstorm thrown in...

HARRIERS’ GOOD FORM CONTINUES l athletics Athletes of Erme Valley Harriers’continued their good form with success at the Run Exe Relays. Each of the four athletes had to run a 4km loop. The Harriers U20 team (Joe Battershill, Joe Perry, Sam Yearling and Nathan Brown) along with the Ladies (Cleo Perry, Sarah Hirons, Jaine Swift and Emma Lake) won the team prizes. There was a good turnout at the Muskies Madness, with many fine performances. Russ Mogridge was 2nd mv50, Emma Lake 3rd lady and 1st fv40, whilst Mike Hansen was 2nd mv55. Emma Lake, Carol Hansen and Katy Mogridge won the team prize for the Ladies. At the first running of the Burrator 10K the Harriers’ athletes were in superb form with Allister Bristow 2nd mv40, Paddy Trinder 3rd mv40, Michael Miners 1st mv35 and Cleo Perry 1st fv40. Richard Lander Stow made the long trip to Scotland to run the Edinburgh Marathon. The trip was worthwhile as Lander Stow achieved a personal best time of 3.30.01, knocking some 9 minutes off his previous best time. W Three athletes completed the very demanding

Dartmoor Discovery Ultra Marathon. This race covers some 32 miles across the hills of Dartmoor. Craig MacAlpine (4.47.59), Jo Edwards (4.59.26) and Don Rigby (5.36.28) all achieved good times. Edwards was also 2nd fv50. At the Run Exe Summer 5K Series Alison McEwing was the first Harrier home and Alison Thorn was 1st fv40, Jaine Swift 1st fv45, Mike Hansen 1st mv55 and Jo Edwards 2nd fv50. There were many superb performances at
the Plym Valley Challenge. This is a tough mainly ‘off road’ 7 mile race. Neil Holmes was 3rd overall and 1st mv50, whilst Jaine Swift was 3rd lady and 1st fv45. Mike Hansen was 1st mv55 and Ken Summers was 1st mv65. Holmes along with Mike Miners and Lee Eastley won the Men’s Team prize.wards (21.02) 1st fv50. î ermevalleyharriers.co.uk
