LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS WANTED Ivybridge Library is re-opening on Wednesdays and Devon Libraries is offering some exciting volunteering opportunities to local residents. They are looking for volunteers to help with the meeting and greeting of customers, assisting with the self-service machines and returning books to the shelves at various times during the week. A team of community minded volunteers is also sought to help on Wednesday afternoons, which will involve the same duties plus a small amount of basic IT work. If you are able to spare a few hours a week, or would just like to know more at this stage, contact Ivybridge Library by email Ivybridge.library@devon.gov.uk or call 01752 893140.
Ivybridge Childminders Association visited Ivybridge Fire Station to find out about the role of firefighters and learn about the equipment they use. Twenty children had a great time, seeing all the equipment that is carried on a fire engine and learning what it is used for, trying on some of the uniform, getting inside the cab of the fire engine, hearing the sirens and alarms and squirting the fire hose.
Loo petition
ELECTION RESULTS
A petition has been started to ask Ivybridge Town Council provide a public toilet in Filham Park. Although there are toilets nearby – at the Donkey Sanctuary and in the cricket club – these are not always open and all are not accessible for disabled users. The scores of families, dog walkers, older and disabled people, as well as local and visiting football teams, using the park do not currently have access to a toilet. The allotments alone have over 150 users, including several wheelchair users and a group from the Dove Project, and research has shown that women and children are one of the hard to reach groups when it comes to allotments because of the lack of appropriate WC facilities. The petition is asking for a fully accessible WC, open seven days a week, to be provided.
Gary Streeter was comfortably reelected as the MP for South West Devon, covering Ivybridge, with a majority of 20,109. In the district council elections, long-standing town representative Tony Barber failed to get reelected in Ivybridge East, with incumbent Kathy Cuthbert and former town mayor Karen Pringle voted in, while in Ivybridge West, incumbents David May and Michael Saltern were elected.
WEDNESDAYS AT THE WATERMARK The Watermark and the Library have undergone exciting changes. The Information Centre is now in the library, where it will continue to provide information about local services, timetables, dispense recycle bags, sell books, maps and guides and be the base for the Box Office selling tickets for all upcoming events, and the Coffee Shop has expanded to provide addi-
tional bright and spacious seating. The library will now be open on Wednesdays. Library staff will be on duty between 9am and 1pm, with library volunteers hosting a Library Extra session from 1-5pm. On Wednesday, 27 May, to celebrate the changes, activities and events to interest all the family, on a Naturally Healthy theme, are taking place throughout the day.
YOUNG CARERS NEED SUPPORT A charity which helps young people urgently needs volunteers so that it can continue to offer respite trips for the children and young people it supports. Young Devon works with carers as young as five years old and prides itself on the range and quality of the year-round programme of respite trips that it offers. But if it cannot find enough volunteers, some of the most vulnerable young people in the county will miss out on the breaks from their caring responsibilities that they so desperately need. Young Devon is looking to urgently recruit a small group of committed volunteers who have a few days spare to look after these inspiring young people as they

have a deserved day or two away from their caring responsibilities. “For many young carers it is so important that they have the chance to be with other young carers who understand what they are going through, have time to enjoy leisure activities and see that they are valued by others for their caring role,” said Katherine Mullan, project manager at Young Devon. “We don’t need volunteers to have detailed knowledge, just some time to give and the energy and desire to help local young carers have a great day out.”

All the children had a really informative morning, but it was apparent that there were several fire engine enthusiasts amongst the group who particularly enjoyed the visit! The group would like to say a big “thank you” to firefighters Matt and Rob for giving up their morning to explain their role as firefighters and let the children have a look around the engine and station.
î The petition can be signed at the refreshment van, and there is also a Facebook page (search for Filham Park) with a link to an online version.

clubs& groups DID YOU FIND A BOUQUET? May 1st was National Flower Arrangers Day and to publicise this members of flower clubs across the country were asked to leave ‘Lonely Bouquets’ in prominent places in their locality. Members of Ivybridge Flower Club did their bit and small bunches of flowers appeared in odd places, waiting to be found and taken home by members of the public. Each bouquet had a label attached to it and the club would love to know the end of their journeys. The title of Margaret Heal’s demonstration at the May meeting was “Hearts and Flowers”. She used interesting floral combinations – each arrangement used different varieties of anthuriums (which are heart shaped) and her knowledge of the plants used was excellent. Next month’s meeting takes the form of an imposed workshop – members have been given details of the materials they need to bring with them and on arrival they will find additional items which they may choose whether or not to include in their designs. Visitors are welcome, £5. FIND OUT MORE: Contact club chairman, Janet Weston, tel: (01752) 894643.
ARE YOU A SLEUTH? Calling all amateur sleuths! ‘A Shot in the Dark’, a murder mystery event organised by Black Ivy Mysteries, is taking place at The Watermark on Saturday 20th June, 7pm for 7.30pm start. The mystery is centred around a 1960s nightclub with the usual accusations and recriminations will you be able to solve the murder? There are prizes to be won and to add to the fun, why not come in 60s fancy dress? Tickets, which cost £20 for a twocourse hot buffet and welcome drink are on sale now from The Watermark box office, advance

It is being staged at The Watermark on Friday 14 and Saturday 15 August at 7.30pm. It’s a typical whodunnit - with many red herrings and skeletons in the cupboard before the murder is solved. pleased to find themselves in some of the pictures, notably the carnival float and the tapestry. Ivybridge WI Committee supplied a mouth-watering tea with sandwiches (including cucumber, of course), cheese scones, small cakes, and a magnificent 95th Birthday Cake, made by Geraldine Sampson, a past President. Visitors are welcome to join us on the first Tuesday of each month at 2.30pm at Ivybridge Methodist Church Hall.
SPRING LUNCH Members of Ivybridge Probus Club and their wives gathered at The Cottage Hotel, Hope Cove, for the club’s annual Ladies’ Spring Lunch. The sea was like a millpond, the sky Mediterranean sea blue and the temperature perfect, with many of the party enjoying aperitifs on the balcony over looking the beautiful cove. After a delicious three course lunch, outgoing president Howard Webster proposed a toast “to our lovely ladies” before introducing new president Michael Bailey and his deputy Michael Greaves. Howard ended his address by thanking the club for its support of his endeavours. It was, he remarked, “very satisfying that so many of the members were singularly or jointly involved with proposing and organising events. The hallmark of a vibrant club made more so by the wide spectrum of members careers and backgrounds.” The brief handover ceremony concluded with the Past President bestowing the chain of office to the incoming President and in return receiving the Past President’s necktie. REPORTS
Baley the Barn Owl and handler Jo Plant, from Ashburton’s Barn Owl Trust, visited the Year 4 children at Stowford to help them understand the impact people have had on the barn owls’ natural habitat. Jo used a special picture drawn on a blackboard to help her tell the story of a Devon farm and how it had changed over the last 100 years and how that had affected the
Years 3 and 4 children at Manor Primary travelled back in time on Dartmoor to enhance their topic on the Anglo Saxons, and learn about using navigation skills in a real situation. They first climbed to the top of Haytor, then down through quarries and past the old, abandoned granite tramway. They carried on over rivers and moorland until, tired and hungry, they finally arrived at Houndtor Medieval Village. Here, they were met by a woman from Saxon times who told tales of ‘Hairy Hands’ and creatures who had been turned to rock. After exploring the medieval village, they climbed to Houndtor summit and finally stumbled back to the waiting bus, grubby, tired and elated!
barn owls living at the farm. She explained how making fields bigger had resulted in the loss of two barn owl nesting sites and the building of a new road had also resulted in a loss of “hunting ground”. The highlight of the visit was most definitely the opportunity to meet Baley, a barn owl who was handreared at the Trust, and watch him in flight.
The youngest children at Manor Primary have been learning about where their food comes from with some exciting hands-on experiences. They visited Fowlescombe Farm,at Ugborough, where they were lucky enough to meet a calf that was a few hours old, collect Year 6 children from the Erme Primary School have been testing their stamina as well as their new kit as they train for the Junior Ten Tors Event. Regularly walking between 10 and 14 miles on each training walk, the children have put new waterproofs, compasses and tents, bought with a grant obtained by the PTA, to good use in deepest Dartmoor. The children have given up their time to spend most Saturdays on Dartmoor where they have been
learning how to navigate using maps and compasses. Other skills they have had to master are how to cross streams safely and look after each other on the moor, how to put up tents and use stoves to cook simple meals. These skills, and more, will be put to the test when they take part in the event in June, when they will spend two days on the moor walking 18 miles and camping overnight, supported by their headteacher and two adults.
freshly-laid eggs, feed the lambs and sheep, plant seeds and ride on the little blue tractor. Back at school the children have made butter and cream and learnt about different types of eggs and meat, and they will soon be building their own scarecrows.
Children at The Erme Primary learnt about Britain's parliament and voting system by voting for The Erme Primary Prime Minister. Candidates put up placards, banners and badges, and read out their manifestos in assembly during a question and answer time. On Thursday, 7 May, children were issued their very own voting cards which they took to a polling station, set up in the school atrium, where they could cast their vote in the privacy of the polling booths.

well Does your flip leave you in a flop? BY NIKKI SMITH, MCSP South Hams Physio
Here comes the sun... and that means most of us will be digging out our sandals and flip flops. The structure of the flip flop means that it does not give extensive support. They do not have straps that support around the ankle, therefore sprains and twists can occur more easily when wearing these shoes. One study found people tend to scrunch their toes as the heel is lifted in the air while walking, causing fatigue of the small muscles in your feet and calf and leading to head, neck, and hip problems if this style of walking alters your posture. The thin, flexible soles do not provide enough cushioning for the heel and the lack of arch support causes the foot to collapse and lie unnaturally flat on the shoe. When walking, flip flop wearers take shorter strides and turn their ankles inward, putting the wearer at greater risk of ankle injury. Heel pain such as planta fasciitis is a growing concern among young people who do not normally have foot problems and flip flops are believed to contribute to this. Common injuries seen in flip flop wearers include foot fatigue, in-
Tips for choosing your next pair of flip flops: » Choose flip flops with a sturdier soles for better cushioning. Shoes of any kind should never fold in half or sideways. They need a built-in arch support and high quality straps help prevent blisters. » Limit wearing flip flops for short periods of time. Eg walking on the beach, hanging by the pool etc. Do not wear to walk long distances. » Never wear flip flops while playing sports. » Try to replace thin-soled flip flops every 3-4 months due to the lack of cushioning for your feet.
fections of the feet, cuts/scrapes of the feet, heel injuries, postural aches and pains and bunions. I don’t completely disapprove of flip flops, in fact I do have a pair myself, but if I’m being honest they are not the most comfortable and are only worn for short periods of time. If I am planning to go walking for longer or further then I usually wear my more supportive sandal. BREAKING DOWN THE STIGMA BY DEBBIE BAKEWELL Side By Side Counselling
Mental wellbeing is just as important as physical wellbeing. The difference is that it can’t be bandaged like a broken limb. Nonetheless, it still deserves the same quality of support, without the stigma and embarrassment that we, as a society, place on mental health issues. The Duchess of Cambridge is Royal Patron for the children’s charity ‘Place2Be’, and has recently made it her mission to break down the stigma surrounding mental health, encouraging parents not to be embarrassed in seeking help. I firmly believe that with early intervention and by working through
those difficult thoughts and feelings that are causing you pain, in a safe, confidential space, you can take back control. I work with all ages including children and young adults, involving a wide range of issues. I firmly believe that counselling should be available to all and not dependent on a waiting list, which is reflected in my fees – with concessions available for young people. I offer an initial one-hour session free of charge, so that we can meet, you get an idea of how counselling may work for you and to see whether you are ready to embark on your journey. Get back in the driving seat BY YVONNE AND DIANE Ivy Counselling
{|
“Do you dread getting into a car?”
Fear of getting into a car and travelling, as either a driver or a passenger, can be a reaction following an accident. This can have a profound effect on life in general both mentally and physically. Anxiety at the thought of approaching the car, putting the key into the ignition, holding the steering wheel, feeling the car move or even sitting in the seat as a passenger, can lead to not only thoughts racing but debilitating physical symptoms of panic which often prevents people from “sitting back in the driving seat”. Does this sound familiar? The loss of driving can mean different things to different people, getting to work, relying on public transport, taxiing the children, friends and family, the inconvenience and frustration of

For a lot of people, the anxiety of speaking in front of people is a very natural fear that can cause a degree of anticipation and stress – especially when it’s for something important, like a wedding speech or work-related. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help to unlock confidence that can feel illusive for some people. I see a lot of clients looking for ways to improve their confidence to help them in both their personal lives and also in business. Using SFH it is possible to achieve a crucial change in thinking that can make a real difference. I work with someone over a period of weeks to help them cement the change that they want to make. By taking small, regular steps towards achieving their aims we soon see a set of positive changes that allow them to focus on real and attainable goals in many areas of life – from the boardroom to the football pitch and from the workplace to home life. I work by helping people to reduce their stress levels to a point whereby they can feel calm, confident and relaxed and so take life in their stride.

Lasting Powers of Attorney Everyone should have one. If you lose mental capacity no one, even your spouse, has the legal right to make decisions for you. Your bank may even freeze your joint account if you have one, the authorities may decide to send you to a nursing home which your family do not want as they feel they would like to look after you. Losing mental capacity could be that you have been diagnosed with dementia or it could be that you are unconscious and in a coma after a fall.

How to make a simple basket arrangement Items needed are: • 1 block of oasis (soaked and slightly higher than the edges of the basket/trug) • 1 dish to hold the oasis (if basket lined with plastic, you don’t need to put a dish in the bottom) • Pieces of foliage and flowers of your choice – chosen to take into account the scale of your design. The foliage should be a mixture of size, shape and texture – to add interest. (The arrangement pictured uses spray carnations and sprigs of golden rod, with camellia leaves, sedum and stems of pieris.) Method Place the heavier camellia leaves in the oasis at the bottom of the design, bringing them over the edge of the basket to break the line. Add the sedum and pieris higher and nearer the centre of the arrangement, to give added weight.

T
he Ivybridge parish magazine of June 1915 had much to report. Ernest Hoskin and Eliza Bovey had married; Annie Kitson had died aged 80; the Sick and Poor fund held a balance of £17, 1 shilling and a ha’penny. A Girls’ Club had started meeting in the Church Hall on Monday nights and was busily knitting mufflers, socks, mittens and cuffs to be sent to soldiers and sailors. It was recorded that another nine young men had joined up, though the magazine was rather late in publishing some names – they joined earlier in 1915. These were Henry Hall, John Sherrill, John Damerell (right), Albert West, James Bond, Sydney Exworthy, the twins Frank and Rupert Downing and John Frederick. The magazine also tells us that a former resident of Ivybridge,
Sergeant Hall of the Royal Marine Light Infantry, died when HMS Goliath was sunk. HMS Goliath was commissioned in 1900 and served in the Far East until 1905, at which time she joined the Mediterranean Fleet. From March 1915, she took part in the Dardanelles Campaign in support of the landings at Gallipoli in April. On 13 May, 1915, HMS Goliath was sunk in Morto Bay off Cape Helles by two torpedoes from the Turkish destroyer Muâvenet-i Millîye. 570 of the 700-strong crew died, including her commanding officer, Captain Thomas Lawrie Shelford and Sergeant Hall. Thanks to Tom Maddock, who allowed me to look through old copies of the Ivybridge Parish Magazine; and to Mrs and Mrs Stacey of Ivybridge who provided the photograph of their relative, John Damerell.

MARATHON SUCCESS FOR THE HARRIERS l athletics Athletes of Erme Valley Harriers have been competing in top events far and wide. There were many fine performances at the London Marathon. Alison McEwing set a new ladies’ club record (2.53.03) by taking six minutes off her own record, whilst marathon debutant Cleo Perry (pictured) broke the long-standing vet 40 record with a time of 3.01.31. Emma Lake (3.08.47) had a fine run and beat her previous best time in London, whilst Jo Edwards (3.30.24) was just outside her own vet 45 record. Neil Travers (3.40.26), Patrick Wakeley (3.46.37), Phil Lord (3.54.13) and Richard Lane (4.24.40) also completed the race. Mike Hoskin had got the marathon season underway with a fine run at the Taunton Marathon and a time of 3.16.23. The hot conditions at Taunton meant several athletes opted for the Half Marathon, with Tom Packer (1.29.02), Sarah Hirons (1.33.06), Kent Watson (1.33.36) and Laurence Harris (1.39.15) all surviving the conditions. The Harriers had several athletes

in the Plymouth Half Marathon. Andy Norris (1.18.00) and Neil Holmes (1.19.52) did particularly well – Norris was 1st mv40, whilst Holmes was 1st mv50. Richard Stephens (1.33.53), Laurence Harris (1.38.10) and Adrian Woodhouse (1.41.28) all ran well. The Ivybridge 10k was a great success and is now regarded as one of the best 10k races in the South West. There was nearly 700 finishers – 50 up on the previous year, and many fast times.

FC Bridge Inn were the surprise package of the Sunday Plymouth and West Devon Combination League 2014/15 season after an unexpected promotion to the top division. After a mixed start to the season, a fantastic run of results saw them win an impressive nine out of 11 fixtures after the new year. The club of Ivybridge-based players finished the season in an impressive 4th place. The team carried their fine league form into cup competitions, knocking out a host of fancied Plymouth clubs en route to the semi finals of the showpiece Devon Senior Cup, finally bowing out to Exeter-based Heavitree Social FC. The club would like to thank Ink Inn for its generous sponsorship, and commend the players and support team for their effort and commitment in what was an epic season. The 2014/15 Squad were: T. Appleby, J. Armstrong, C. Barnard, L.Brown, O.Brown, M. Byford, R. Christophers, L. Cox, T. Davidson, D.Hatch, M. Hancock, B. Hugill, G. Jones, R. Jones, J. McCreery, R. McClements, S. McClements, D. Mortimore, S. Passmore, V. Reeves, B. Rowell, S.Saunders, S. Sutton, M. Swift, J. Zimmerman
Owen Parkin was the first Harrier home and first local in a time of 35.42 (8th place), whilst there were also good runs from Paddy Trinder (27th - 38.25), Christian Cutcliffe (35th - 39.00), Simon Swift (68th - 41.36) and Shaun Bell (82nd - 42.27). Bell was also 1st local vet. Some Harriers like a challenge
and running nearly 24 miles, taking in the Yorkshire peaks of Peny-Ghent, Whernside and Ingleborough, in driving rain, snow and low temperatures, is probably as tough as it can get, so well done to the Harriers’ hardy threesome Craig MacAlpine (3.55), Don Rigby (4.17) and Jean Baptiste Rouvelin (4.31).
