NEWS IVYBRIDGE RESIDENTS URGED TO BE SMARTER ONSTREET PARKERS BY THE EMERGENCY SERVICES Poor and inconsiderate parking in streets across Ivybridge, which prevents emergency service vehicles from attending call-outs, has been highlighted after a recent incident when an ambulance could not reach a patient. A serious medical emergency was initially attended by co-responders, but when an ambulance was called the crew were heavily delayed due to bad parking in the area. Ultimately, the crew were unable to reach the house and had to park the ambulance at the end of the road. As a result, the timeliness of the patient’s care was greatly hindered. The emergency services are liaising about the issue, with a view of holding joint surveys of the roads in the town to assess the problem.

A free ‘essential toddler first aid workshop for grandparents’ is being held on Tuesday, 14th June, 10am-12.30pm, in the Beacon Room at Ivybridge Library. Aimed at grandparents who have regular childcare responsibilities, topics that will be covered include child and baby CPR, choking, burns and scalds, head bumps, febrile convulsions, meningitis and first aid kits. Attendees will receive a book to take away. Places are limited so booking is essential. Call 01803 862266 or email cvs@southhamscvs.org.uk

Think! The emergency services are urging people to think when they park on a busy street – could a fire engine, ambulance or the police get through if it was you and your family in need? It may be as simple as folding in wing mirrors, or making sure your wheels are not turning out into the road.

CHILDREN IN HARMONY WITH DEMENTIA SUFFERERS THROUGH MUSIC Woodlands Park Primary School hosted its first Music Café in April for members of the community living with memory loss. Selected pupils were on hand to join in the fun and offer support, if needed, during the musical activities which included singing, drumming and playing the steel pans. The Music Café is run by specialist music teacher Debbie Down in collaboration with Ivybridge Memory Café. “Musical aptitude and music appreciation are two of the last remaining abilities in people living with dementia,” said Debbie. “Because these two abilities remain long after other abilities have passed, music is an excellent way to reach beyond the disease and reach the person. “These workshops also give the children the opportunity to develop their empathy and understanding of dementia and become friends with the older

NEWS BROWNIE LEADER’S SURPRISE AT PRESTIGIOUS AWARD An Ivybridge Brownie leader has received a prestigious award in recognition of her service to the Girlguiding movement. Second Ivybridge Brownie leader Amanda Mead, or Tawny Owl, received the Devon Standard Award at a surprise presentation during a normal Brownie meeting in front of friends, family and past Brownies, and celebrated with tea and cake. The award recognises Amanda’s contribution and commitment to Girlguiding. A Brownie leader for over 20 years, she has in that time also taken on division roles such as treasurer and Commissioner, mentored new leaders, helped open new Brownie and Rainbow units and overseen many exciting and fun trips and residentials. Amanda’s highlights of her years in Guiding have been visiting Brownsea Island, the Big Gig, a sleepover in the Rainforest Biome and the local Girlguiding Centenary celebration, when everyone renewed their Promise in a barn lit by fairy lights! Most important though has been the teamwork involved with the local Leaders and seeing girls grow and mature from young Rainbows through the organisation and on to become Young Leaders and even Leaders themselves.

The Ivybridge Beginners and Returners Orchestra currently has spaces for all instruments, with the exception of cellos and clarinets. Rehearsals are held on alternate Mondays, 10.30am-12noon, at St Austin’s Priory (6, 13, 20, 27 June) and Saturdays, 9.30-11am, at The Watermark (4, 11, 18). î Email barwintersgill@ gmail.com for more details

Bike Week rides Small group-led bike rides celebrating Bike Week are being held on Sunday, 12th June. The two rides, each 31 miles long and following the National Cycle Network on circular routes, are being organised jointly by PL21 and Sustrans. The first ride starts from Ivybridge at 9.30am, going initially to Coypool before following the Drakes Trail through Plymbridge Woods to Clearbrook where it meets the Dartmoor Way Cycle Route. The return journey follows the Dartmoor Way onto the moors via Cornwood and Harford. The second ride starting at Coypool at 11am will follow the same route.

DOWN MEMORY LANE ‘Evoking memories’ was the theme of the demonstration at May’s meeting of Ivybridge Flower Club. Childhood was the first memory of Christine Harrington, an area demonstrator from Callington, recalling receiving a Christmas present of a hoola hoop, before moving on to a white lampshade from her bedroom when first married in the 70s. A design on a driftwood heart – when her son got engaged – an arrangement of white arums on a large flat tray reminiscent of an arrangement she saw floating on a hotel lake while on holiday in Malaysia, and finally memories of her dad’s sheds (made out of wooden pallets). All the designs were cleverly thought-out and immaculately crafted, using very differing shapes and colours of flowers and foliage. Members were reminded of the upcoming Pud Evening – an evening to socialise and enjoy a selection of delicious puddings at a member’s house. The club’s next meeting is on 13th June, at The Watermark at 7.30pm when area demonstrator Elaine Reynolds will give a demonstration entitled ‘inspirational fun and flowers’. Visitors are welcome, £6.. FIND OUT MORE: contact Hilary Newcombe, tel: 892647 6

You will need: • 1 round oasis posy pad • 1 cylindrical container/ hurricane lamp/glass vase • 1 church candle • 10 or 12 red and orange mini gerberas • 1 bunch orange spray carnations • 1 bunch red/orange freesias • Hypericum berries (or similar) • Leatherleaf (fern), ruscous or foliage from the garden.

Send us your club’s report – we’d be happy to include a report from your club or group in future issues. See page three for how to send them to us.

TABLE CENTRE ARRANGEMENT By Ivybridge Flower Club

Soak the posy pad for about 510 minutes. Place the cylindrical container in the centre of the posy pad. Arrange the leatherleaf around the edge of the posy pad like a skirt. Decide on the height you want your flowers and cut the stems accordingly. Arrange the gerberas around the cylinder mixing the colours, then infill with the carnations, freesias and berries. Infill any gaps with the leatherleaf and ruscous to hide the oasis. Place the candle in the cylindrical container and your table centre is completed.

SUMMER COMEDY A comical double bill featuring two hilarious short plays from very different eras forms this year’s summer production of Ivybridge Theatre Company. ‘A Mad Breakfast’, by Isabel McReynolds Gray, is a one-act farce set in the dining room of a 1950s boarding house. The guests arrive for breakfast and hilarity ensues as chaos tops confusion, soon causing one of the new guests to fear for their life! ‘A Jolly Sinister Jape’, by Elliot Strange, is a fast-moving, madcap comedy, set in the 1920s, with a liberal sprinkling of hilarious period slang, along with mystery and thrills. The production is being staged at The Watermark on Friday 29th & Saturday 30th July at 7.30pm. Tickets are on sale from the Watermark box office (01752 892220) – £7 and concessions £6. Watermark Club Members get £1 off. Ivybridge Theatre Company meet at Chapel Place, Fore Street, every Wednesday at 7.30pm. If you have any interest or experience in performing arts or helping back-stage they would

love to hear from you! Annual membership is £15 for over 16s. FIND OUT MORE: Contact Ron Davis on 01752 893308 or visit ivybridgetheatrecompany.co.uk

RECALLING CAIRO The June general meeting of Ivybridge U3A is at 2pm on Monday, 20th June, at The Watermark. Speaker Janet Diamond will talk on “experiencing Egypt – three years in Cairo”. Containing numerous personal photos from her time there, including many street scenes of life in Cairo, this talk is a visual record of her three years in Egypt in the early 1980s. Janet will take a brief look at the many rich and varied historical and cultural influences over the centuries, and the political disruptions that Egypt had recently experienced, events that take in some Egyptology, an unusual visit to the Valley of the Kings; some lesser-known, but very important pyramids – and experiencing the assassination of the then president of Egypt. SCHOOLS Dave Smith, illustrator of some of the Horrible History books, visited Stowford’s year 4 classes to help them get their Egyptian topic off to a creative start. The children had started to think about Egyptian gods, so Dave showed them how to draw them by breaking images down into shapes first and then adding detail to build up the picture gradually. He also showed them how to add colour effectively.

The children in the CAIRB at Manor School (above) visited Pennywell Farm at the beginning of May as part of their topic on animals and classification. The children enjoyed learning about different animals, and how to care for them and how to handle them. Max and Lucy found milking a goat trickier than anticipated, but eventually managed to master the technique. The children also learnt how to make up milk for the lambs. The children were very privileged to be able to visit the three-day old piglets, who were incredibly cute but too young to handle. They did get a cuddle with one four-month-old piglet, which fell asleep in the children’s arms.

RNLI lifeguards visited The Erme Primary School to teach them about beach safety and explain the work of the RNLI. The children found out about different warning flags that are used at the beach, and how to keep safe in the sun and water. The lifeguards came in one of their custom trucks and the children had the opportunity to set off sirens and flashing lights, and some children were given the chance to use the loud speaker, which is used to warn people about dangers on the beach.

Foundation class at Manor Primary school visited Plymouth City centre and the Hoe to compare how big the city was to Ivybridge. They had their first go at sketching outside, making impressive

drawings of the civic centre. They walked to the Hoe and looked at the fabulous views and after a walk of nearly two miles they had an ice cream and a well deserved ride on the train at West Hoe.

Year 1 and 2 at Manor primary school hiked up to Henlake Down to find inspiration for their writing. They used their senses to observe things around them and collected small treasures such as feathers and bark.

COMMUNITY FOCUS

Fifteen years of caring An Ivybridge-based charity which offers support to pancreatic cancer sufferers and their families is using the celebration of its 15th anniversary as a springboard to expand coverage of its vital services across the country. Operation Henry is a unique charity which works with specialist nurses and oncologists to support people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and their families. Pancreatic cancer is the fifth deadliest cancer in the UK, and around 9,000 people will be diagnosed with it this year. Of those, only 1% will survive the disease for 10 years or more, just 3% will survive for five years or more,

I have been liaising with Operation Henry for a few years now. The support and services they provide to people diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and their families is invaluable. They are able to provide that little bit extra support that can make a real difference to their lives.

{|

Claire Goulding – HPB Oncology Nurse Specialist at Derriford and only 21% will survive their disease for one year or more Operation Henry provides a unique kind of support to those diagnosed with the cancer by working with them to identify and fulfil their individual needs. The charity’s assistance falls into four broad categories: • Helping create cherished memories through a respite break with their family, • Financial advice and support • Arranging domestic help around the house • Transport to and from hospital. However, the whole ethos of its work is the needs of the patient and they will help in whatever ways they can to support the family through what is an extremely traumatic time. Operation Henry was started in 2001 by David Snelling after his father died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 62. He committed himself to create a registered charity which would provide benefits to those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, as well as raising awareness of the disease. Fifteen

Angela needs to get to Derriford three times a month from her home in Wembury to receive chemotherapy treatment. Dreading the stress of parking at the hospital, and facing the journey home after her treatment, she approached the charity after being told about Operation Henry by her oncology nurse. years on, David can proudly reflect that he has achieved this, and much, much more. While David’s passion still drives the charity forward, the day-to-day running of the charity’s operations is now guided by an executive team. Sophie Trinick, charity manager, Marina Leadbetter, head of fundraising, and Sam Foley, head of IT, work closely together on the management of services, raising awareness of both the

charity and condition, and fundraising. All are playing a key role in fulfilling David’s ambition that the charity’s help is available to pancreatic cancer patients wherever they are in the country. Operation Henry has achieved much in its first 15 years, and has ambitious plans for the future. It is calling on local people to continue supporting them so that they can continue to help those diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.

The charity is asking organisations to commit to raise £1,000 each, with all the money raised going to help Operation Henry reach more people so that they can benefit from the range of support services they offer. From muddy runs and cake bakes, to office raffles and sponsored leg waxes, fundraising ideas are endless! In return, Operation Henry will shout about it and let everyone know about your community support with a page on their website dedicated to your company and your fundraising efforts. î For more details visit www.operationhenry.org/ team15

off. Becoming aware was like looking at oneself in a mirror and not liking what could be seen. The easy option would have been to quit, a new person was emerging and this was terrifying. It seemed for a while there was 2 of me, one I disliked but felt safe with, the other I was starting to like but was afraid of. Whilst in training, personal counselling was mandatory, for me it was such a challenge, at the time I think I would have preferred to have climbed Mount Everest, however after many sessions, I finally accepted, I may, if I allowed myself, to benefit from this experience. The counselling I received was nurturing, I didn’t feel I was being judged and I felt my saviour but my calling. It is a privileged relationship that I have experienced and believe in with a passion. At Ivy counselling all the elements are in place for anyone to feel listened to, heard and be able to flourish to possibly find their own unique life changing experience.

Julie As a result of my upbringing and other significant events, I was left with a very poor self image. I felt very ashamed of who I was. I did all I could to hide it from myself and the rest of the

I feel that I have arrived both in the physical and emotional being I am today as a result of every aspect of my personal history. I have loved and lost in every sense of the word. I thought there could not be anything more painful after experiencing my ‘perfect family life’ being blown apart by the divorce of my parents but that was nothing in comparison to watching them both leave me permanently through their premature deaths. In between came an abusive marriage to an alcoholic who stripped me of my confidence, self esteem and at times, even the will to live. This was the moment when I first entered into personal counselling and I witnessed the benefit of being listened to in a safe, non judgemental space created for me by my counsellor. I was able to explore and make sense of how external life events had impacted on me, something I had never given thought to. Gradually I climbed out of the deep, dark void that I had fallen into. My mother’s death was hugely life changing, she had given me life in every sense of the word and I watched as her life came to an end. I questioned if my world would ever be the same and of course it never is when someone who has been so inspirational is no longer there. Once again counselling came into my thoughts and I enrolled on my first safe to be me, this new person, whom I was starting to accept without being afraid. It was at this point I started to believe in the concept of counselling. I appreciate counselling is not always easy so when I say to clients it takes courage to enter into a counselling relationship I say this sincerely, as I

world, but over time it took it’s toll. I believed myself to be defective in some way. I was too ashamed to tell anyone and suffered in silence to the point where I was ridden with anxiety and consequently, depression. Often I was too afraid to leave the house. I carried on like this for years, always dissatisfied. I was constantly searching outside of myself for relationships and jobs to quench my need to feel worthwhile. This is what led me to start training as a counsellor. I believed it would fulfil that need... a worthwhile job. I soon came to realise however, that it wasn’t the job that would give me what I needed. The training forced me to face myself and others with what I believed to be the truth about myself. It was in this disclosure, that I found people who did not judge me, who were able to

counselling course, I felt mum would have approved and I needed a focus. I would like to say that I never looked back but in my 5 years of training that would be a lie, I uncovered aspects of myself that I either embraced or wanted to close the door on. There were some incredibly painful moments but they provided the next stepping stone in my journey not only to a new career but more importantly, the discovery of who I was and who I have become. I once wrote that I have no regrets, they have no purpose; I can only learn from my past and move forward. ‘Life is like a book, some chapters sad, some happy and some exciting but if you never turn the page, you will never know what the next chapter holds’.. know the courage it took me. I have no regrets with my life and would not wish to change any of it for I have confronted the things that plagued me so I could pursue a meaningful

empathise with me and accept me regardless. I soon entered into my own personal counselling relationship, and this combined with the training changed both my inner and outer worlds. So, here I am, on the other side. I made it through, and now, I am in the privileged position of offering to my clients, what my classmates and counsellors offered me all those years ago. The counselling experience really can change lives, I am living proof of it. It’s so important to have a place where we can express ourselves freely, without the the usual fears of judgement and rejection. In the counselling relationship we can do just that, giving us the opportunity to heal from past wounds, and to uncover our true, unique and wonderful selves.

10 benefits of bouncing

BY BROOKE GRADDON Beat Bounce leader

Are you looking to get fit for summer, but don’t fancy the gym or pounding the streets running? If that sounds like you, then I may have the perfect class for you. Beat Bounce blends fitness, dance and exercise to music, all on a mini trampoline. This new hourlong fitness class is a great way to kick-start your fitness lifestyle, and it is being held in the heart of Ivybridge at The Watermark. I am a former international high board diver and after giving up following 18 years a full-time athlete I wanted to bring a class to Ivybridge that would push me and others to their limit and Beat Bounce does exactly that. Beat Bounce has two distinct different stages to it.

1. Everyone can do it. It's suitable for all ages, abilities and fitness levels. 2. It’s extremely effective for body fat loss. Plus it’s fun! 3. It’s an amazing workout to tone up your whole body. 4. It speeds up your metabolism. 5. It strengthens joints and helps circulation. 6. It helps with stress release, anxiety and depression. 7. It will help you improve your balance and co-ordination. 8. It is proven to be 68% more effective than running. 9. Cardio exercise decreases the risk of a heart attack. 10. It will make you smile and laugh, and it is great fun. Beat Bounce is hard work, but you’ll see great results and it is something you can do with friends. Come and join me on Tuesdays, 6.-7pm and 7-8pm at The Watermark.

well Pelvic floor tips for a happy summer Happy to share us and our journeys BY HELENA COSTIFF Cornwood Physiotherapy

Summer holiday season is here, heralding an increase in activity as people are tempted outside. Many of us also jet off on holiday to enjoy different climates and cultures, and to sample local foods and drinks. These changes to our usual routine can often present a bit of a challenge to our pelvic floors, so here are my top tips for a happy pelvic summer... 1. If you are exercising harder than usual or trying a new activity, then put simply, if you are leaking, have pelvic pain or are feeling pressure and heaviness “down below” then STOP! See your GP or physiotherapist and modify the activity. 2. New environments and new routines can lead to constipation in the first few days of a holiday. A shot glass-size portion of prune juice or orange juice with bits in before bed followed by your pre-

ferred hot drink in the morning can be a pretty effective remedy. 3. If you are heading to hotter climes, try to maintain your fluid intake of at least 1.5-2 litres. Aim for an ideal number of 4-7 wees a day. 4. A touch more alcohol than usual and spending all day in a wet bikini or swimming costume are the perfect ingredients for a urinary tract infection. Change out of wet clothes as soon as you can and change into breathable cotton underwear. 5. If you are heading off to somewhere where the loos are of the ‘squat’ variety, don’t immediately dismiss the idea! We were designed to squat and you might actually find it makes it easier to go to the toilet without the need to strain! If continence or pelvic floor issues are threatening to spoil your summer, please do contact me. Cornwood Physiotherapy Tel: 01752 837724 / 07737891059 www.cornwoodphysiotherapy.co.uk /womens-health

We use the skills, knowledge and experience we have gained in order to help you to help yourself. It is not usual for counsellors to 'self disclose' to clients, however, there are occasions when it is felt appropriate. The decision to do so is not taken lightly, but is done to enhance the counselling relationship. We thought it may be useful if you were able to know the Ivy Counselling and Brighter Futures team better, and read about our personal journeys into counselling, which you will find in the centre pages. We never lose sight of how difficult it can be to take the first step

well Exercise can help reduce the risk of falling for those most at risk BY NIKKI SMITH, MCSP South Hams Physio

Following our free walking aid check and drop-in clinic last month, it is clear from the feedback we received that it was useful to those that attended and that there is a need to help those who are at a high risk of falls take part in exercise to reduce their overall risk of falling. Falls can cause not only physical injury but also loss of confidence, self-esteem and reduced independence. Here’s a reminder of what you can do at home to help reduce the risk of falls:

Avoiding falls at home • Mop up spillages immediately so you don’t slip on them. • Move loose wires away from walk ways and keep hall ways clear of clutter. • Use non-slip rugs and mats, or remove mats completely. • Use lights at night to make it easier to see.

• Organise furniture to keep twisting, stretching and bending to a minimum. • Wear non-slip footwear and do not walk in socks or tights. Make sure footwear is well fitting. Exercising to prevent falls The following exercises are simple and easy to perform at home without the need for any fancy equipment: 1. Heel-to-toe standing/ walking: With fingertips on something solid to help balance, stand heel-to-toe, bend your knees slightly and keep still for 10 seconds. Vary the exercise by walking slowly, placing your heel to touch the toe of the other foot. This helps keep balance when you have to walk through a narrow space. 2. Knee raises: With fingertips on something solid to help balance, lift a knee to hip level and hold it for five seconds. Repeat with the other leg. Then repeat eight times.

This exercise helps with climbing stairs and getting in and out of cars and on and off buses. 3. Side leg raise/sideways walking: With fingertips on something solid to help balance, stand on one leg and raise the other sideways, holding it for five seconds. Repeat eight times. Repeat with the other leg. Extend to walking sideways, with slow steps alongside a bench or table. This improves stability when you have to take weight on one leg and helps you step sideways to avoid tripping. 4. Heel raise: With fingertips on something solid to help balance, lift both heels off the floor and stand on your toes for three seconds, then slowly lower your heels to the floor. Repeat five times. Helps with walking and climbing stairs. 5. Stepping up a step: Holding onto a rail, go up and down a single step. Repeat five times. This improves stability on steps, paths and uneven surfaces.

6. Sit to stand: Stand up slowly from a chair, keeping your knees slightly apart. To make it harder, cross your arms in front of your chest or hold them out in front of you at shoulder height. Then lower yourself back down into the chair. Repeat five times. If this is too strong for your knees, start by using a chair with armrests. This helps with getting up and down from a chair or toilet and in and out of the car.

Accidents happen Accidents and ill health are a risk to all of us, not just older people, writes Donna Butler, SWLaw Private Client Solicitor. If you suffer a serious accident or period of ill health, you may not be able to make decisions for yourself or manage your affairs for a period of time. Without powers of attorney (POA) in place, those closest to you cannot make these decisions on your behalf without a costly and time-consuming application to Court. For those with children or other dependents and for business owners, the situation can be even more serious. The last thing that you will want to face when recovering from a serious accident or injury is financial hardship or even a legal battle. The cost of others not being able to manage your affairs can often run into thousands of pounds. Even your nearest and dearest cannot make decisions on your medical treatment without your prior consent. And yet, there is a simple solution and why you should make Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPA) a priority. They are surprisingly easy and inexpensive to set in place. Furthermore, they can be used for a temporary period while you are unable to make decisions, with decision-making reverting to you as soon as you have recovered. There are two types of LPA; Health and welfare Property and financial affairs You can chose to make one or both, appointing different attorneys to each if you wish. A Health and Welfare LPA will give your attorney(s) power to make decisions on issues such as life-sustaining treatment, as well as your general medical and personal care. A Property and Financial Affairs LPA allows your attorney(s) to manage your bank account, pay bills, manage your pension or benefits, and sell your home if necessary. You can restrict their powers, and place conditions on what your attorneys can do. What matters is that your affairs are in the hands of those you trust, should they ever be needed to act for you. Making a Power of Attorney now will safeguard your future, and the futures of those closest to you.

H

MS Hampshire had taken part in the Battle of Jutland (see last month) and immediately after was ordered to carry Lord Kitchener on a diplomatic mission to Russia. Sailing alone in heavy seas, Hampshire was off the mainland of Orkney when she struck a mine. The explosion holed the cruiser between the bows and bridge. She began to sink and within about 15 minutes had gone down. When they were lowered, many of her lifeboats were smashed against the side of the ship by the heavy seas. Of the 655 crewmen and seven passengers aboard, only 12 managed to reach the shore

HANNAHS’ DAMES JOIN RACE FOR LIFE A group of girls and staff from Hannahs at Ivybridge are to take part in the Race for Life in Plymouth on 19th June. The group, known as ‘The Dames’ after Dame Hannah Rogers who founded the charity, are young ladies with a range of disabilities who will be walking rather than running round the course, accompanied by their support workers. . They will be joining thousands of ladies across the UK in raising money for Cancer Research UK.

“We receive so much support from others that it’s nice to be able to give back,” says Gemma Otter of Hannahs. “The Race for Life is a very vibrant and lively event. The young ladies will be organising a fancy dress outfit in traditional pink to complete the walk. Our friends and families will be coming along to support us. We are excited to be able to take part and in our own way be able to make a difference.” î To sponsor The Dames go to justgiving.com/Thedames

RING AND RIDE MINIBUS

The current government has announced a raft of changes over the last couple of years which imply that it don’t really much like landlords, says Simon Jilks, so does it still work?

Minibuses are equipped with wheelchair tail-lifts. Door-to-door service. The driver will load & unload shopping if necessary WRANGATON, BITTAFORD IVYBRIDGE AREA INCLUDING & UGBOROUGH

Every Monday: Newton Abbot..............................£4.50 First off, what have been the recent changes? There is now an additional 3% stamp duty payable on property purchases if you already own a property.

We are not in the days of 1520% returns, as we were back in 2000, but the right property could still return 8-10%, far out stripping what you can get from the bank.

Tax relief on mortgage interest is being restricted to basic rate relief, so any landlords with total earnings over £43,000pa will pay more tax.

This assumes that you have spare cash to invest. If you need to borrow more than 75% of the value of the property it probably isn’t worth considering due to the difficulties in getting a mortgage.

Wear and tear allowance for furnished properties has been abolished from April 2016, and, finally, the reduction in the capital gains tax rate of 8% does not apply to residential buy-to-let properties.

Over long periods, properties should still appreciate in value, too, providing they are properly maintained, so perhaps they constitute a good pension pot.

All in all, not great news. The government line is that landlords are pushing up house prices, making it impossible for first time buyers to get onto the ladder... make of that what you will!

An option for landlords would be to form a company to potentially reduce tax by using the company to contribute into a personal pension and maybe handing shares in the company to children to reduce Inheritance Tax.

Despite all these changes, investing in property can still work as a long term investment.

Being a landlord doesn’t come without it’s headaches, but in short, it can still work.

Give us two minutes and help beat the litter louts

CYCLING

RANGERS

However, one of the constant elements of our job, no matter what season, is sadly responding to and picking up litter. This tends to be split into two categories, flytipping and recreational litter. Flytipping is legally the responsibility of the landowner and is normally dealt with by the landowner and/or the local district council. Our role is to pass this information on to them with location, grid references etc. Recreational litter, although ultimately the legal responsibility of the landowner and the councils, is normally cleared up by us, helped very often by a band of unsung hero volunteers. Basically, anything that we can safely put into a black bin liner we will clear. As an authority we currently spend over £20,000 per year disposing of litter (this does not include our time or fuel). At the end of May we launched a new project to help to tackle this unsightly and costly problem. Working with the globally successful #2 minute beach clean charity we have brought this campaign inland and onto Dartmoor. The idea being that it asks people to simply take two minutes of their time to litterpick the area where they are visiting, leaving it clean and tidy and a safer place for the next visitors and the local wildlife and stock. Pretty much everybody hates litter and this is an ideal way to be proactive, get involved and have pride in the areas you love to visit. Six, large, ‘A’ frame boards, with litterpickers and bags, will be taken to various locations on the moor over the weekends and school holidays to encourage community and visitor involvement. Once the litter is collected the local rangers and volunteer wardens will dispose of it. There is then the option to “post” your photos of the litter collected onto various social media outlets – more information about this are on the boards. By highlighting the problem of litter, hopefully the message will start to get through to those irresponsible people who think it’s OK to drop it. Now that the warmer weather is here, it is the perfect time to plan a camping trip. You are permitted to wildcamp on Dartmoor in various locations – basically where you have walked out onto the moor and are planning to pitch-up overnight in a remote location. Too many people are abusing this privilege, however, and are driving to a car park, taking out a large tent and pitching it beside the road or within 50 meters of the car park – this is NOT wild camping. For more information please look at the website or contact HQ on 01626 832093.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Ranger service first hand, or think you may need their help please, contact them on: Ella – 07711104546 / ebriens@dartmoor.gov.uk Andrea – 07720509270 / aroberts@dartmoor.gov.uk

Wills and their dangers David Richardson, founder of Richardsons Legal Services

A Will is your first line of defence to ensure that your assets go to your chosen recipients. It is not fool proof, however, and sometimes a Will is contested, for example, and an award made by the courts to someone you did not wish to inherit. Certain groups of people are entitled to reasonable financial provision in your Will under the 1975 Inheritance Act. All you children, a spouse, an ex-spouse who has not re-married, a partner who has co-habited with you for two years or more, and someone who is partly or wholly supported by you at the time of your death. We will advise you how best to minimise these risks when we see you to take your Will instructions. If you have underage children and you die without a Will in place, your children will probably be taken into care and may be

fostered because there is no one with the legal right to become their guardian. There is a simple answer to this. You can nominate guardians in a Will and they then have the legal right to become guardians. Very often, when someone dies leaving a spouse or partner, with the passage of time that person meets someone else and changes their Will. This can result in your children or other nominated beneficiaries getting nothing. All problems have an answer and the best solution for most people over 60 who are retired or semiretired is A Home Protection or Asset Protection Trust. For those of working age, the solution is usually different. There are a number of Trusts which can be built into a Will. The most useful are Protective Property Trust (not to be confused with Home Protection Trust) Discretionary Trust of Residue. And for parents with a disabled child, a Disabled Trust really is essential to ensure that child is looked after from the Trust without losing state benefits.

Before you make an appointment to give your Will instructions, you should think about: 1. Who are going to be your executors? We recommend trusted family and friends – more than one but no more than four. We do not recommend having a professional as an executor unless there is no one else. 2. Who are to be your beneficiaries? 3. Who are to be guardians for any underage children? 4. What assets have you got –

@Ivybridgemag // facebook.com/theivybridgemagazine // theivybridgemagazine.co.uk // 07516 539573 // 01752 426522

ISAs, cash in the bank, etc – and how do you want them distributed? You can make fixed gifts of money and you can also give percentages of your estate. Don’t worry about thinking everything out, Whoever you appoint to write your Will can discuss your wishes on the appointment and the answer usually becomes crystal clear quite quickly. Theft from vehicles We are continuing to have reports of thefts from vehicles in different areas of Ivybridge – 14 crimes reported since the beginning of April. Unfortunately, the majority of vehicles have been left unsecure and items such as iPods, SatNavs, sunglasses and loose change are being stolen.

Tips to keep your vehicle safe

• Secure doors, windows, boot and sunroof every time you leave your vehicle.

• Don’t leave items on display

when you leave the car, including your SatNav. You should also try and remove the mount when your vehicle is unattended, and clean any suction marks, if visible. • If you have to leave items in the vehicle, put them in the boot out of sight. • Lock your vehicle. The thefts have been in different areas of Ivybridge and sporadic, so it makes it difficult for us to monitor a specific area. All the targets have been unsecure vehicles, and the culprits seem to be wearing gloves, meaning forensic evidence is difficult to collect. We cannot stipulate enough, please secure your vehicle. Should you become a victim, and you failed to lock your car, the result may be that your insurance company will not settle a claim.

Stowford School held its 4th Tag Rugby Festival in April, and this year's event received the backing of Ivybridge Rugby Club, with three 1st XV players joining the children

to referee the games and show their support for school rugby. The main aim of the festival is to promote the enjoyment of rugby for primary children and give as many

children as possible the chance to play. With 11 teams taking part, there was plenty of rugby on offer throughout the afternoon. This not

only gave the children plenty of game time, but also the opportunity to develop skills and become more proficient at playing as a team.

Cricketers targeting promotion push

The victorious Stowford tag rugby squad, who will represent the South Hams in the Devon Summer Games

STOWFORD CLAIM SOUTH HAMS TAG RUGBY TITLE l schools’ tag rugby The top six primary tag rugby teams in the South Hams met at Kingsbridge Community College to battle it out for the chance to represent the South Hams at a county competition in this month. Holbeton, Ugborough and Stowford, from the Ivybridge learning community, took on Kingsbridge, Loddiswell and Church School Federation from the Kingsbridge area in an afternoon of highly competitive, quality rugby.

Each team played one other in the round robin tournament, scoring points depending on whether they won, lost or drew. At the end of the tournament Stowford, with four wins and a draw, had accrued the most points, meaning that they reclaimed the South Hams Cup that they had to relinquish to Kingsbridge last year, and winning the chance to go forward as South Hams representative at the Devon Summer Games.

Kelvin Trent is Ivybridge Cricket Club 1st XI’s new captain for the upcoming season. The club welcome back Sri Lankan all-rounder Jeewan deSilva for another summer. The standout player in the Devon B Division for the past few seasons, he will play a crucial role in a squad which is regarded as possessing the ability to challenge for promotion again. The 2nd X1 are largely unchanged from last season, and will be looking to improve on last term’s mid-table finish. 20/20 cricket also returns to Filham Park, with games against local rivals Cornwood and Plympton.
