NEWS Tough guys talk about Jesus

Hannah appointed World Literacy Youth Ambassador

Tough Talk is coming to Ivybridge this month. Tough Talk is made up of men with ‘interesting’ backgrounds, such as power lifters, body builders, ex bouncers and debt collectors, ex villains and hardmen, who tell their life stories and share how Jesus Christ changed their lives for the better. The men-only event is on Saturday, 10th June, at The Watermark, starting at 7pm. Tickets are £7.50 to include food. You can pay on the night but pre-booking is required via the email below by 8th June.  Contact Mark Lawrence revmark@live.co.uk / 07527 796319 to find out more

A remarkable young woman from Hannahwood, Hannahs young adult provision in Ivybridge, has been appointed as Youth Ambassador for the World Literacy Foundation. Hannah Lavell, 26, will be involved with literacy projects supporting vulnerable and disadvantaged children in the community as part of this new initiative launched last year. As well as this fantastic new role, Hannah has been elected official volunteer for this year’s Funky Llama Festival, a totally inclusive festival held in Plymouth every summer. She sat on the steering group of last summer’s festival. Hannah’s life was transformed in February 2016 when she moved into a bungalow at Hannahs, having previously spent six years in a nursing home.

Quiz night

GET SMART ABOUT COMMUNITY ENERGY South Dartmoor Community Energy is bringing Community Energy Fortnight to Ivybridge this month. They are hosting a series of events to help Ivybridge get to grips with what community energy is and why it is needed. Students at ICC will be taking part in a poster competition to explain important issues such as fuel poverty and how our energy use affects vulnerable people around the world through climate change. This is an opportunity for young people to get their voice heard and a chance to work on a real PR campaign to inspire people to make lifestyle changes.

The winning posters will be on display at the Energy Lab, a mini interactive exhibition on all things energy, on Saturday, 17th June, in the Pop-Up Shop in Glanvilles Mill. Open from 9.30am-1pm, there will be activities for all ages, including crafts and stories for the little ones, and science experiments and model building for the older ones. Adults can chat to the energy advice team or check out how to get involved in one of SDCE’s projects. “Community Energy Fortnight is our chance to raise awareness of what we do and we hope people

will pop in to see us at the Energy Lab on 17th June,” said SDCE director Sophie Phillips. There will be an opportunity for a more in-depth look at community share offers on 5th July in Ivybridge Library (7pm). There will be presentations from successful schemes running in Plymouth and you can find out how the community can benefit from the changes taking place in UK energy supply. SDCE is hoping to launch a share offer later this year.

A series of information events about adoption are being held by a local adoption agency. Families for Children, a specialist adoption agency and charitable trust, has a growing number of children waiting to be adopted and are looking for more adopters to come forward. The informal sessions are being held at Families for Children’s offices at Southgate Court, Buckfastleigh, on 7th, 14th, 21st and 28th June, between 5-6pm.  Tel: 01364 645480 / familiesforchildren.org.uk

LIFEBOAT LOOK AROUND

CONTACT THE IVYBRIDGE MAGAZINE

Ivybridge Childminders and their children recently enjoyed a visit to the lifeboat station at Salcombe. The children had a look around the lifeboat station, had a tour of the lifeboat and they also got to explore equipment on deck and in the cabin underneath. The children were given a colouring to take home and learnt a bit more about what the lifeboat crew do. The trip was part of a range of ‘People Who Help Us’ visits. twitter: @Ivybridgemag \\ facebook: @TheIvybridgemagazine \\ theivybridgemagazine.co.uk \\ 07516 539573 | 01752 426522

NEWS GIRLGUIDING SAYS ‘THANK YOU’ TO MARVELLOUS MERCY Mercy Matthews (pictured) was recently presented with a Girlguiding Thanks badge to show the association’s appreciation for all that she does for the local Girlguiding division. Mercy has been an enthusiastic member of Guiding throughout her life – many local mums remember her from their own guiding days and may remember her as Beaver – and she still enjoys being involved whenever the opportunity arises. Mercy is a regular badge tester at Brownies and is always happy to help with singing. She also runs the local depot, ordering uniform, badges and books for the whole division. Mercy is a member of Ivybridge Trefoil Guild (for adults in Guiding), which she helped found nearly 30 years ago.

BOWLS CLUB NEEDS YOUR VOTES TO BAG CASH Ivybridge Bowls Club is asking for your vote as it bids for a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. The club is one of the three local groups on the current short list, which sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000 awarded to community projects depending on the number of votes they receive. Voting is open in store throughout June. Customers can cast their vote for the club by using the token given to them at the check-out each time they shop.

The bowls green is the centrepiece of the club and essential to the game. Volunteers at the club maintain it to a first-class

condition, mowing it to a fine smooth surface To help them continue to do this, the club will put the money they receive towards the purchase of a new high-quality mower. Bowls is a popular sport played by all ages and Ivybridge Bowls Club provides a great social meeting place. The club are hoping local people will support them by giving their vote to them and helping then secure the top £4,000 grant. î To find out more about Bags of Help, visit tesco.com/bagsofhelp

CONSULTATION ON DISTRICT COUNCIL’S PARKING PERMIT PROPOSALS Parking permits valid for Leonards Road car park in Ivybridge could change if proposals put forward by South Hams District Council are approved. In a bid to simplify parking permits across the district, the council is proposing to introduce new town centre, peripheral and rural permits to replace full and commuter permits. In order to make permits clearer

for customers, the changes include: • New town centre permits valid in certain town centres. • Peripheral permits valid in car parks on the outskirts of a specific town. • Rural permits valid in some South Hams car parks in rural locations. To reflect these changes, the costs of permits would be

reduced. New permits would be paperless and limited to one vehicle registration number, with permit holders able to change the registration number online at any time. A consultation on the proposals is open until 9th June. î To view the proposals and have your say, visit www.southhams.gov. uk/consultations

One of 2nd Ivybridge Brownies’ birthday friends has been lost and they are hoping someone will be able to help them find her. The Brownies have four friends, Little Owl, Big Owl, Pixie and Brownie, who stay for a week with each Brownie when they have their birthday. They are all pretty elderly now and have visited many homes in Ivybridge over the years, but they are nonetheless looking very good for their advanced age. Unfortunately, a while ago Big Owl went out and didn’t come back. The Brownies are very sad to have lost Big Owl and would dearly like her to come home to roost. If anyone sees her or knows anything about her whereabouts, please can they send her back to St John’s Church or hall so she can continue staying with Brownies on their birthday for many more years to come.

Ugborough FC celebrate

Ugborough FC marked its 10th anniversary by officially opening its new stadium at Uggie Park and holding a fun social event to raise money towards new goalposts. The event included football-themed activities, fun family games and raffle. Together with an amazing barbecue, the event raised a whopping £266 for the benefit of the club.

NEWS The candidates to be your MP These are the people who would like to be the MP representing Ivybridge, which is part of the South West Devon constituency.

PHILLIPPA DAVEY - Labour and Co-operative Party Concerned about rising use of foodbanks, homelessness, young people struggling to rent or buy properties and rural transport links. “It’s time SW Devon had an MP that put people, not Westminster, first,” she says. Councillor for Stoke ward in Plymouth since 2011.

Ivybridge Caring Volunteers accept a cheque for £3,781 from the Co-op community fund. Carol Beeson, chairman, and Peter Corke, treasurer, (centre) received the cheque from Caroline Boyles,

Co-op Funeral Care arranger (far right), and Co-op Glanvilles Mill store manager Chris Barnes. Accepting the cheque, Carol Beeson said that Ivybridge Caring Volunteers were delighted with the

award and thanked the Co-op for its continued community involvement. Other Ivybridge organisations are also in line to receive awards from the Community Fund, which will benefit the whole of Ivybridge.

LOCAL DOCTOR SMASHES MARATHON GOAL An Ivybridge Rotarian and GP has been reflecting on completing one final marathon to raise money for good causes. Dr Paul Fletcher, 68, ran this year’s London race, 11 years since his last marathon. Setting a personal goal to raise £6,000 for his chosen charities, Paul easily surpassed this, with the current total standing at £7,800 and money still being counted! The money will be equally split between Arthritis Research UK,

the British Heart Foundation and local children’s charity Jeremiah’s Journey. Arthritis Research UK was selected as Paul had a personal aim to prove that you can overcome the effects of arthritis of the knee, through exercise, and this proved the case. Paul finished in a time of five hours, 46 minutes and 40 seconds – 77 minutes longer than he ran 11 years ago! Paul said “I am extremely grate-

JUMPING FOR JOY AFTER GRANT DONATION Friends of the Erme Primary School jumped for joy after receiving a grant of £5,000 from Hays Travel towards the Victoria Park playground development. Following a record-breaking fundraising year, the Friends have virtually reached the goal to create a community sports space free for everyone to use in Victoria Public Park. 6

The plan is to provide new hard and safety surfaces, play markings, robust, accessible and stimulating play equipment, goals for football, netball and basketball Kay Winstone, chair of the Friends, said: “We cannot thank Hays Travel enough. They are so engaging with every step of the project, supporting us along the way.”

ful for the huge support received from family, friends and fellow Rotarians. None of this would have been possible without their support. “A special thank you has to go to the board of Devon Doctors, who very generously supported my cause and helped me achieve this remarkable total.” î Find out more about Rotary by contacting Adrian D’Cunha at adrian.dcunha@virgin.net or find them on Facebook

IAN ROSS - UKIP “I will fight for my constituents rights and ensure their views are represented across the constituency without fear or favour,” he says. Works as an engineer in the defence industry and stood in the recent county council elections in Ivybridge. WIN SCUTT - Green Party Mr Scutt pledges to make protecting local A&E services, funding for Devon’s schools and securing a referendum on the outcome of the Brexit negotiations a priority. “I shall stand up for SW Devon so that we see improvements in our libraries, leisure facilities and services,” he said. Works for English Heritage and has lived in Ermington for 22 years. GARY STREETER - Conservative First elected in 1992, this will be Mr Streeter’s seventh General Election campaign. He served as a minister under John Major and in the front bench teams of different leaders in opposition. “I aim to bring all of that experience into the next Parliament,” he says. CAROLINE VOADEN - Liberal Democrat She was “devastated” by the result of the EU referendum and wants a public vote on the final Brexit deal. “We are the only party that can provide a positive and hopeful alternative to the Tories. We need a different approach to Europe, immediate investment in our NHS and a chance for every child to go to a good school.”

SCHOOL REPORTS

Year 4 children from the three schools in the Moorsway Federation joined forces to experience living in the wild. Pupils from Cornwood C of E, The Erme and Shaugh Prior Primary experienced a residential adventure living in an old quarry on the

Raleigh Estate, near Dartmouth. Their adventure focused around what the children needed to survive – shelter, water, fire and food. Activities on the first day included learning how to make a fire and then making and cooking their own pizzas on the fire, problem

solving activities which enabled them to get water to the camp, and building their own porch on an already existing shelter. Day two was based around learning how to work together through different challenges such as discovering a lost world,

climbing high trees, canoeing on the river Dart, and collecting enough fire wood to keep the camp fire going. The children had a fantastic time, making new friends and learning a lot about themselves, as well as acquiring new skills

Three enterprising Year 6 girls at Manor Primary School organized a charity cake sale in aid of St Luke’s Hospice. Harriet, Tilly and Emily raised £100 to support the work of St Luke’s. The money was presented to the charity at a celebratory school assembly.

“It was really fun setting up the stall,” said Harriet. “We would like to thank all pupils and staff who bought and enjoyed the cakes. “Special thanks to Bethany, who helped sell the treats during break-time, and Harriet’s mum, who baked over 60 cakes!” said Tilly and Emily.

The Erme Primary School Year 3/4 tag rugby team of Jake, Tom, Marcus, Holly, Chloe, Issy and Luke competed against eight local schools in a competition at Ivybridge Rugby Club. Despite losing their first game against Stowford, team spirits were high for the second fixture,

which saw tries by Tom and Issy set up an impressive win. They couldn’t carry on the good form in the next game, however, losing to Ermington. The team notched up several wins, with the team showing great skill and enthusiasm, finishing in an impressive fourth place.

TO NEW FRIENDSHIPS With each month that passes, we get ever-nearer to our launch month and as promised we have some news for you regarding our activities. We’ve been itching to let you all in on some exciting news for a while now...

Michael Greaves hands on chain of office to the new Ivybridge Probus Club president Mike Fletcher

The club’s next meeting, on Monday, 12th June, will be a ‘hands-on’ workshop led by Hilary Newcombe . For details on materials needed contact Hilary. On Saturday, 8th July, the club is holding a floral spectacular workshop led by Amanda Randall, Master Florist and Chelsea Gold Medal, winner at Bittaford Village Hall, 9.30am-12noon. PROBUS CLUB

Ivybridge Probus Club enjoyed its annual Ladies’ Spring Lunch at The Cottage Hotel at Hope Cove on 26th April. After lunch the out-going president, Michael Greaves, thanked Keith and Ann Kiddell for all their work in organising the lunch. He went on to thank the officers of the club, including Bob Mailing, Steve Woodcock, Miles Grindrod, Michael Bailey and Howard Webster, for their support during his year as president. His final thanks were to Mike Fletcher, who has taken over as president, at which point he passed over the chain of office. Michael Fletcher in turn expressed the club’s thanks to the outgoing president for a highly successful year. Michael presided over his first meeting on 9th May at The Rose & Crown, Yealmpton. The speaker was member Peter Brook who, standing in at very short notice, talked about ‘geology from the Big Bang’ and delivered a most interesting talk recounting the development of the Earth over the millennia, using a mixture of

slides which were both explanatory and stunningly graphic. The club’s next meeting is at Wrangaton Golf Club on Wednesday, 7th June. ¢ Contact secretary Bob Mailing on 01752 892255

WALKING CLUB

Ivybridge Walking Club has two walks planned for June on Sunday 4th and 18th. Visit the club’s website – iwcdevon.org.uk – for details.

FARCE IN THE MAKING

Rehearsals are at an advanced stage for Ivybridge Theatre Company’s summer show, A Bedroom Farce, by Alan Ayckbourn. The production is on between 6-8th July at 7.45pm and tickets are on sale at The Watermark for just £7.50. On the Friday night (7th) there is a special Gala Night, with the proceeds going to the mayor’s charities, Ivybridge Foodbank and Ivybridge Youth projects. The evening will involve a cheese and wine reception at 6.45am, hosted by the Mayor, before watching the production. Tickets for the Gala event are £15 per person. Normal tickets, at £7.50, will still be available for the Friday night show. The play promises to be an absolutely hilarious evening with all the wit one has come to expect from Alan Ayckbourn. ITC meet at Chapel Place, Fore Street, every Wednesday at 7.30pm. If you have any interest or experience in performing arts or helping back-stage they would love to hear from you. ¢ Contact Ron Davis on 01752 893308 or visit ivybridgetheatre company.co.uk

We have struck up a friendship with one of the largest independent arts organisations in Devon through RedPod Arts. The result is very exciting not only for The Clay Factory but Ivybridge also. Devon Arts Network is a membership organisation set up to promote artists and makers in Devon, annually hosting successful events and exhibitions. They paid us a visit earlier in the year and were so bowled over by the work we’re doing with RedPod Arts that they have decided that their next art exhibition, which will hopefully attract artists from all over Devon, is going to take place at The Clay Factory in July. We hope it will be another event to not only get the town talking but people visiting our unique building once again. The good news doesn’t stop there. We feel it would be a crying shame not to make the most of such a big opportunity, so we can officially announce that RedPod Arts will be hosting an open studios event to run alongside the Devon Arts Network exhibition. It will offer the chance to meet our resident artists on site and see the fabulous work they do on a daily basis in Ivybridge. July will be a busy month at The Clay Factory as we will also be opening our doors to the community to showcase what we have on offer at ‘the place up the lane by the big chimney’. More good news about our exciting month will follow.

The tradition of grazing on Dartmoor National Park dates back to medieval times. Today, there are literally thousands of animals still grazing on Dartmoor Commons. When visiting Dartmoor remember to GIVE WAY to Cattle, Sheep and Ponies. They are most prevalent along roadside verges and they have the right of way, so take MOOR care. Warning: Animals will sleep on the roads at night to keep warm. Hitting an animal with your car on Dartmoor can be deadly and very costly. If, despite careful driving, you are unlucky enough to hit and injure an animal on Dartmoor, you must: 

STOP and check the animal and then

Report the incident to the police by calling 101 or the Dartmoor Livestock Protection Society on 07873 587 561 (or 999). This is a legal requirement. You must do this as quickly as you can, whether the animal is killed or not.  

20

Remember Grazing Animals have Right of Way Animals, like children, are unpredictable and will run out in the road unexpectedly. Never exceed 40mph on Dartmoor roads and reduce your speed dramatically at night and during poor weather It is against the law to ride motorcycles, bicycles or motor vehicles off-road on Dartmoor (£500 fine)

Dartmoor provides an important stronghold for otters (a globally threatened and protected species), who use Dartmoor’s rivers, but also venture onto other habitats including blanket bogs where they search for a meal. The Otter sculptures, which have been decorated by local and national artists and are wonderfully varied – from fine-artwork to more fun pieces such as the ‘Dart Knight’ and ‘Potter Otter’ – can be found at various places in and around Dartmoor such as hotels, holiday parks, restaurants and local tourist attractions. Complete one of the many trails or try and spot all 100 – prizes to be won! Once the project is finished the Otters will be auctioned off to help raise funds to support our Junior Ranger programme and fund vital conservation work across the Moor. For more information pop into one of our Visitor Centres or visit moorotters.co.uk With the usual mix of spring sunshine and showers, the vegetation is really starting to grow wild. While beautiful in most instances, it can be a bit of a pain while trying to navigate a footpath or bridlepath. You may notice some of your local paths becoming quite overgrown and from late July onwards we start to strim and clear the vegetation. We tend to leave it until then because the bird nesting season is still going strong in May and June and, under the Sampford Principle, conservation should take precedent over recreation. However, if there are any paths near you that are becoming completely unusable with overgrown vegetation please let us know and we can try to prioritise those. We are often helped by local charities, volunteer wardens and volunteers clearing the nearly 500 miles of paths on Dartmoor – no small feat. If you are out and about and see them clearing a path, stop and say hello, it’s often appreciated by the volunteers to know that they are doing something useful that will benefit others.

wellness WHAT’S THAT SPOT? IS IT A VERRUCA? By Jackie Thomas of Abbey Road Podiatry Verrucae, or plantar warts, are a viral infection found on the feet. Depending on where they are they can be painful. Verrucae can occur on any part of the foot and will look like a tiny dot, or cluster of dots. If they are in a non-weight bearing area of the foot they can look raised and warty. The virus itself is not painful, but it encourages the growth of lots of hard skin around them that can be uncomfortable. It causes the lower layers of the skin to proliferate into lots of folds, bringing up little blood vessels to the surface, which are the black spots you can see. Verrucae do not have roots – these are the capillaries. How can you tell whether you have a verruca or something more sinister, eg a malignant melanoma? A suitably qualified medical professional, such as a podiatrist or dermatologist, should be able to diagnose them before

Some people thrive on change, whilst others do all they can to resist it. Change can be scary and uncomfortable only if we look at it that way; it is the way we deal with the changes we are faced with that will determine the negative or positive impact on our life. So many of us struggle with change as we believe that it will have a negative impact on our life, but by challenging this automatic thought into a more positive statement, change can be seen as an opportunity for adventure. No matter how

process. Once your body knows what the verruca looks like it can learn to kill it. Different treatments will suit different people, so it is important that you speak to a HCPCregistered podiatrist to discuss the best for you. Summer arrangement using a supermarket bunch By Ivybridge Flower Club The supermarket bunch comprised one large rose, a head of hypericum berries, three gerberas, four spray chrysanths – two with larger, spiky blooms and two with much smaller, daisy-like flowers – and a stem of laurel foliage. First, place half a block of soaked oasis into a shallow, waterproof dish, secure with tape. Arrange five hosta or similar large leaves in the oasis around the base to hide the dish. Cut the largest flower of the bunch (in this case, the rose) quite short and place it at the front, slightly off centre to the 24

right. Place the gerberas in a curved line on the left, grading their height. Add the hypericum

berries in front of the lowest gerbera, next to the rose at the front. Cut individual long stems from the larger spray chrysanths and place them to follow the line of the gerberas, to ‘shadow’ them and accentuate the curve. Add one large chrysanth at the base, to the left of the lowest gerbera. Cut the centre ‘fan’ from the laurel and place it behind the rose and the lowest gerbera. Cut short sections from the daisy chrysanths and add to the righthand side, curving from the back to the front, extending beyond and below the rose. Fill the back and any gaps with short lengths of filler foliage, such as pittosporum.

Deeds of variation and inheritance tax David Richardson, founder of Richardsons Legal Services Unwanted inheritances do occasionally occur, particularly when the person receiving the inheritance knows that when they die their estate will be charged inheritance tax. Inheritance tax is charged at 40% on everything in a person’s estate over £325,000. This includes cash savings, property etc. For a married couple, who leave everything to each other on first death, there is nothing to pay on first death and the remaining spouse gets a transferable allowance which means that they have a £650,000 allowance. Additionally, anyone who resides in their own property and leaves everything to their children when they die now gets a Residential Nil Rate Band allowance giving them an addition £100,000 tax free allowance, and this is set to rise over the next few years to £175,000. You could of course give the inheritance you have just received to someone else, your children for example, but unfortunately it is still fully counted in your inheritance tax calculations for three full years after you gave it away, and it is not technically fully out of your estate for seven years; this is known as the seven year rule. For an example, let’s look at someone who owns their own home, worth say £500,000, and has savings of £500,000. And let’s assume they have a transferable allowance from a deceased spouse and are leaving everything to their children. They currently have allowances of £750,000 and their heirs will have to pay 40% of £250,000 to the government from their inheritance, £100,000. However, if the unwanted inheritance was say £250,000 and they created a Deed of Variation within two years of the death of the person who left them their inheritance, the inheritance is technically out of their estate straight away without having to wait seven years.

MONEY MATTERS

THE NEW WAY OF SAVING UP TO £175,000 FROM INHERITANCE TAX

with Ivybridge Accountants Ltd So you’re thinking of investing in property, asks Lisa Lines Historically, property investment has been an effective way to invest and save for retirement, but the last decade has seen the benefits of property investment eroded. Between the house market crash in 2008 and the more recent attack on landlords through the tax system, how do you get the best from your property investment once you’ve found the right property? More and more, people are using companies to own property so they can take advantage of planning opportunities, such as making company pension contributions to reduce the tax payable on the rental profits. Using a company to own property also affords the opportunity for inheritance tax planning by allotting shares to other family members, such as children. Using a company does not avoid the need to pay the additional 3% stamp duty if you are buying a second or subsequent property. If you are going to buy property to “do up” and sell on you are seen as trading by the tax man and this means all of the gain on the eventual sale is treated as income instead of capital. This can result in 40% tax rates being paid if you are already earning at the higher end of the basic rate threshold. Using a company reduces the tax on this trading income to the corporation tax rate of 19% and allows you to spread the personal tax cost by drawing the proceeds as dividends over a period of a few years in order to make use of the 0% rate of tax on dividends and any remaining basic rate band where dividends are taxed at 7.5%. Property investment still works, but in these times you have to plan harder to maximise the benefits.

Did you know you could extend the tax free amount you leave to your loved ones on your death of up to £175,000 by 2021? Currently, everybody has a tax free sum called the Nilrate Band (NRB) of £325,000. Where spouses are leaving everything to each other this can be transferred, so on the second death, they could have up to £650,000. From 6th April, 2017, the new Residence Nil-rate Band (RNRB) allows a further tax free amount that can be left in respect of the deceased’s Property. Some of the basic conditions are: • The death must be on or after 6 April 2017 • The deceased owned a home, or share of a home (or recently disposed of one in some circumstances) • Direct descendants (for example, children or grandchildren) are inheriting the home or a share of it • The whole estate value does not exceed £2million Currently, £100,000 is the maximum RNRB but this will increase each year until 2020-2021 when it will reach £175,000. Like the traditional NRB, the RNRB will be transferable between spouses, even if the first spouse died before 6 April 2017; therefore, after April 2020 a couple could leave up to £1million tax free if all the conditions are met. Everything over the relevant NRBs is likely to be taxed at 40% (subject to any other available exemptions and reliefs). The legislation does come with some restrictions, including where Wills have certain types of trust, or gifts are left in particular ways, so we recommend you review your Will to ensure that you are making best use of your available allowances. Even if you do not have a Will, you can contact us to see how the changes in legislation may affect you and your estate. To arrange a free consultation to make a Will, review a Will or just discuss estate planning queries in more detail, you can contact Howard & Over on 01752 690123 or drop into our office on Fore Street.

The Easter Sunday car boot sale proved to be enormously popular with traders and buyers alike, with all due thanks for tremendous organisation of the event by our charity partner Tony Cobbold. With the warm weather and over 100 traders a fantastic £741 was raised for Marie Curie, plus a further £90 from donations and sales of books. Funds have also been raised instore from our second-hand book sale and swap shop, the Wishing Well and the raffle of a yummy Easter Hamper in April. The sunflower growing competition has been in full swing between April and May as we continue to build our fundraising total towards the 2017 target of £8,000.

Matt, Christine and other helpers have also been out to visit local schools to help the children plant a sunflower seed and give advice on how to look after their seedlings. We are looking forward to receiving all the entries with photographs and stories about growing your giant sunflowers. The competition winner will be decided on 1st September, with super prizes for the winner, second and third largest specimens. Good luck to all and don’t forget to keep watering and feeding your plants! Finally, a huge thank you to all our customers, without your generous donations we would not be able to support charities such as Marie Curie in their work.
