news JONAS WINS NATIONAL COMPETITION

Jonas with his competitionwinning child’s toy box

Jonas Ganderton has won an amazing tool hamper worth over £600 after submitting his GCSE project to an online national competition. “In the beginning of March I noticed that Axminster Tools & Machinery were holding a ‘MakeItInMarch’ competition which I thought I could enter my resistant materials project,2 said the Ivybridge Community College Year 11 student. “So, over the coming weeks I finished my child’s toy box. It features a marine theme, rope handles, coloured blocks and numbers, fun wheels and a safety stay. I learnt how to biscuit joint two pieces of wood, set pencils in epoxy resin and turn on a lathe, and use CAD/CAM techniques. “I then photographed it, and posted the pictures on Twitter along with #MakeItInMarch16U hashtag.” At the end of April, Axminster Tools & Machinery posted on its website that it had received over 300 entries and announced the winners. “I was amazed to see I had been selected as the winner for the under 16 category. Later that week I received a large box containing over £600 worth of tools including a Dremel, Bosch professional multi cutter, a wood plane and more. “I now look forward to the GCSEs finishing so I have some time to work on a new project.”

SCHOOL CHILDREN GET VISIBLE Children from Erme Primary School in Ivybridge will be highly visible next time they take an educational visit out into the community, thanks to a donation from Western Power Distribution (WPD).

The company has supplied high visibility vests to the school as part of its pledge to help youngsters stay safe when out on busy streets and in public areas. “It’s great that WPD recognises the

importance of road safety and is supporting us in this way to help keep children safe. The hi-vis vests will be really useful all year round,” said Kay Winstone from Friends of the Erme Primary.

TAKE A STAND AGAINST SCAMS Organised scams cost people in the UK billions of pounds a year. June is national Scams Awareness Month and Citizens Advice South Hams is joining with Trading Standards to stop more people from being scammed. The charity is encouraging people to report and talk about scams. Victims don’t always admit they have been targeted due to shame, stigma or not being aware a crime has taken place. It’s important to encourage more reporting because scams are a growing problem. Being scammed can ruin people’s lives. The things to be aware of include:

• A phone call, letter, email or text arriving unexpectedly • Winning a lottery or competition you don’t recall entering • Being asked to send or give money in advance for services or products • Someone ringing you and asking for personal details for security reasons • Being urged to respond quickly so there isn’t time to think or talk to someone Janie Moor, CEO of Citizens Advice South Hams, said: “Scams are perpetrated by ruthless individuals who will stop at nothing to defraud vulnerable and

unsuspecting members of our community. It can be devastating to those affected. “The more we talk about scams the more we reduce the crime. The best advice is to follow your instincts - if you are suspicious of anything at all, walk away, close the door or put the phone down.” i Citizens Advice can provide advice

and pass on details to Trading Standards - 03454 04 05 06. Report scams or suspected scams to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or visit www.actionfraud.police.uk To report suspicious mail talk to The Royal Mail on 03456 113 413 or email scam.mail@royalmail.com

Wendy Jamieson (front right) with her fundraising pilates class

A pilates class in Lee Mill is celebrating after reaching its target of raising £10,000 for St Luke’s Hospice. Started in October 2015 with just four people, the class now boasts 40 people and has had to be spilt

into two sessions. Organised by Wendy Jamieson, the classes take place in the function room at the Westward Inn, which landlady Louisa Hutchings generously lets the group use for free, ensuring every penny raised goes

to the Hospice. “From a small idea, ‘Pilates at the Westward’ has grown into something that is good for St Luke’s and good for the community. Onwards and upwards, our next goal is £20,000,” said a delighted Wendy.

PAY UP TO SPEND A PENNY People will now have to pay to use the toilets in Glanvilles Mill car park, as well as in other locations across the South Hams. A fee of 20p will be charged, paid through a ‘pay on entry’ system which is to be installed in the toilets. South Hams District Council’s

executive decided to introduce the charge to raise money towards the running costs of the public conveniences. The council currently spends close to £1million per annum providing and maintaining public toilets. Cllr Rufus Gilbert, executive portfolio holder for commercial

services, said: “There’s no doubt that continuing to provide public toilets is important for residents, visitors and businesses in the South Hams. As a result the council was determined to find a way to protect them, despite the enormous pressures on our budget.”

HANDS-ON WITH STATE-OF-THE-ART MEDICAL EQUIPMENT A group of Year 9 students from Ivybridge Community College were given an exciting opportunity to experience current medical research when they visited the laboratories of Plymouth University at Derriford Science Park. The students had the opportunity to talk to the researchers, professors and graduate students about their work and how they entered their field, as well as use the state-of-the-art equipment in the laboratories.

HEATING OIL CONSULTATION Householders who rely on heating oil to heat their homes are being urged to have their say on a government consultation on how best to “decarbonise the 1.2 million homes across the UK that use oil for heating”. Over 76,000 households in Devon and Cornwall use heating oil and people are being asked to submit their views before the 11th June deadline. Current policy is to encourage rural households currently using oil heating to move to electrically-driven heat pumps in a bid to cut carbon emissions. The Energy Savings Trust estimate that the cost of installing heat pumps is at least £6,000. Data from Sutherland Tables, an independent source of comparative UK domestic heating prices, suggests an oil condensing boiler currently remains far cheaper than any renewable heating options. i To have your say, visit www. gov.uk/government/consultations/a-future-frameworkfor-heat-in-buildings-call-forevidence

n Ivybridge Flower Club SUMMER DELIGHT Sally Edgecombe, the owner of Watts Florist in Oreston, was the demonstrator at the May meeting of Ivybridge Flower Club. Her title, ‘first of the summer’ was very apt, in that the flowers and foliage Sally used were carefully chosen – many locally grown Canterbury Bells, delphiniums, lilacs and the snowball viburnum were used together with many early summer ferns and cow parsley. An evening of natural designs and pure summer delight. Club meetings are held at The Watermark on the second Monday of the month. The demonstrator at the meeting on 12th June will be area demonstrator Fiona Hammond, whose demonstration takes the form of an imposed demonstration entitled ‘pick and mix’. The club will provide all the containers, flowers and foliage and she will choose how to use the materials provided. Visitors are welcome, £6. i Contact Hilary on 01752 892647 for more information about the club

n Ivybridge Theatre Company A FIRST This autumn will see a first for this company as their production coincides with Agatha Christie’s birthday week anniversary celebrations. The company will be staging The Unexpected Guest at The Watermark from 20th-22nd September. This is Christie at her best, leaving lots of clues as to who committed the murder, but, as the play progresses, twisting and turning the plot and laying the blame at the feet of many, we are left more and more unsure as to who actually pulled the trigger. This is a dark mystery indeed and Christie devotees will be in for a night of suspense and disbelief, so the club urge you to put the dates in your diaries now – this is an experience you will not want to miss. Further details will be available soon. If you have any interest in performing arts or even helping back-stage Ivybridge Theatre Company would love to hear from you. i Contact Ron Davis on 01752 893308 or visit ivybridgetheatre company.co.uk

n Ivybridge Probus Club SPRING LUNCH The club held its annual spring Ladies’ Lunch, a great event when the club entertains its ladies as well as other guests of members, at The Cottage Hotel, Hope Cove in April. After the usual excellent lunch, new president Bob d’Silva offered the club’s thanks to all

those involved, and made a presentation to Bob Mailing who was retiring as secretary. At the club’s regular meeting in May there was some business to attend to after lunch. An afternoon of croquet at Avonwick will take place on 26th June. Details of the Ladies’ Christmas Lunch were confirmed – it will again be at The Moorland Gardens Hotel on Tuesday, 11th December. Michael Bailey has been asked to prepare some ideas for another overseas trip. There was then an unusual and interesting talk from Ed Welch entitled ‘Spike Milligan – His Life and My Part in It’. Ed worked closely with Spike Milligan for 25 years from 1973 and the talk was a fascinating chain of showbiz anecdotes involving Spike, himself and a list of names and showbiz acquaintances from the era. For the first time for some years, the club finds itself with room for a few more members. If you feel that it is something you would enjoy, based on a monthly lunch at Wrangaton Golf Club, then do please contact club secretary Steve Woodcock on 01752 691305.

n Ivybridge Camera Club BATTLE WINNERS Nature in Motion, a panel of five photographs produced by Ivybridge & District Camera Club, took first place in the Devon Photographic Clubs’ Battle at Paignton against stiff competition from Paignton Photographic Club and Exmouth Photo Group. Alan Davey had two prints in the successful panel; the other three prints were by Sue Joselyn, Ian Clements and David Rayner. The panel featured two wooded bluebell scenes, a bed of tulips and two images from flower beds photographed at the Garden House. All the images were creatively processed to produce or enhance a motion blur and had an ethereal effect applied that matched across the elements of the panel. Club chairman Alan Davey also gained the Best Print accolade for his Windy Garden House image. The Devon Photographic Clubs’ Battle, hosted by a different club each year, is open to every photographic club in Devon and is a competition to produce the best panel of five themed photographs.

SPEED WATCH Year 6 classes at Stowford School carried out a speed watch with Ivybridge neighbourhood police in April. It took place on Exeter Road, with groups covering an hour each between 9.30am and 2.30pm over two days. The children monitored the speed of 1,311 vehicles travelling into Ivybridge from the Bittaford direction, with approximately five per cent of these exceeding the speed limit, with the fastest driver caught doing 45mph!

Every driver speeding was stopped, tickets issued accordingly and interviewed by the children. The questioned included ‘How would you feel if you hit me or one of my friends?’ and ‘Why were you speeding?’ The drivers stopped included parents, teachers, delivery drivers and visitors to the area and the excuses many and varied. PC Dingley said: “Being caught and interviewed by children has a far bigger impact on the drivers than a fine or being sent on a speed awareness course.”

MAY DAY We are pleased to join the imag with news from our small school in Sparkwell. We started the month with our traditional May Day celebration including maypole dancing and the crowning of our May King and Queen. Year 3 and 4 children have enjoyed a residential visit to Slapton and we will be rounding off the month with the annual wholeschool visit to Delamore Arts and a Year 5 residential trip to St Ives. In a partnership with other local schools including Shaugh Prior, Cornwood, Erme, Manor, Ermington and Ugborough we are planning a ‘Blue Planet’ fortnight for the start of June to raise awareness of the environmental damage caused by plastic waste. STAY & PLAY On Wednesday, 6th June, we are holding three ‘stay & play’ sessions for anyone wanting to find out more about us ahead of considering school choices for September 2019. Call us on 01752 878855 to find out more or take a look at our Facebook page. There will also be an open evening in September.

THE TUDORS To start their Tudor topic off with a bang, year 3-4 children at Manor School enjoyed an exciting visit to Buckland Abbey. The highlight of the day was dressing up in a com-

plete Tudor outfit. Their guides told them all about Sir Francis Drake and his adventures. They now understand what it was like to be on board a ship and to travel around the world. Fur-

TEDDY BEAR HOSPITAL Reception class at Yealmpton Primary School launched their ‘People who Help Us’ topic with an exciting visit by medical students who are studying to be doctors at the Peninsula School of Medicine and Dentistry. The children learnt about how their heart works and how to keep healthy. They looked at bones in a skeleton and explored what’s inside a doctor’s bag! They also listened to their heart beat and measured their heart rate. The doctors were also able to make all the children’s teddy bears better, using bandages and plasters.

TAG RUGBY Stowford School won the right to represent the Ivybridge Learning Community (ILC) in the final of the South Hams Tag Rugby competition after being crowned ILC Tag Rugby champions. The squad of 12 children from years 5/6 won the competition at the end of April. The competition took the form of two pools of five teams, with the top two schools in each pool going through to the semi-finals.

Stowford won the first round by three points, and then played Newton Ferrers, the runners-up in their pool, winning 4-2 to reach the final. In the final, they faced last year’s winners Ermington. In a close game, Stowford came out on top 4-3. Coach Mrs McIntosh said” “I am over the moon with the standard of play shown by the children and the way they supported one another to come together as a team.”

feature DEVON’S FORGOTTEN FEMINIST This year marks the centenary of The Representation of the People Act 1918, in which women over the age of 30 meeting certain property qualifications were granted the right to vote. Campaigns for women’s rights, including the right to vote, started around the mid-19th century, after Mary Smith delivered the first women’s suffrage petition to parliament in 1832. But it wasn’t really until 1897, when Millicent Fawcett founded the National Union of Women’s Suffrage Societies (NUWSS), that the campaign for women’s suffrage really gained momentum. These campaigners were known as suffragists and they believed that debate, petitions and peaceful protest were the keys to success. The Great Pilgrimage of 1913 was a march organised by the NUWSS. Women marched to London from all around England and Wales, culminating is 50,000 attending a rally in Hyde Park in July. Plans were drawn up for six routes from all over the country, one of which began at Land’s End. The march’s journey through Devon saw the women gathering at Plympton to stir up support and then they moved onto Ivybridge where they had a picnic in Victoria Park. Women from all social classes joined in the campaign for the vote and at the end of the rally in Hyde Park the motion “that this meeting demands a Government measure for the enfranchisement of women” was unanimously passed.

Mary Willcocks

Mary Patricia Willcocks has been described as Devon’s forgotten feminist. She was born at Cleeve, near Ivybridge. Well educated, she attended Plymouth High School for Girls and a Young Ladies’ College, before qualifying as a schoolmistress and working in Jersey, Edinburgh and Leamington Spa. In the evenings she wrote, but she was over 30 before her first novel, Widdicombe, was published in 1905 by John Lane’s Bodley Head. She would eventually publish 24 books, many based around the area of her birth, and she was a

contemporary of DH Lawrence, with whom she corresponded. As well as novels she wrote biographies, essays and translations. Apart from being a successful romantic novelist, Mary’s ideas were advanced for her time and she was a feminist, socialist and pacifist and a formidable lecturer and debater. She was interested in child health, the treatment of widows and orphans and industrial protectionism of women and was a supporter of education in prisons. She was a founder member of both the Exeter NUWSS and Exeter’s Worker’s Educational Association (WEA) and a regular speaker on the suffrage circuit. In June 1913, she joined hundreds of West country women in the suffragist march from Penzance to London, later describing how they were ‘stoned in Totnes’. In 1918 she stood for the Labour Party in the Exeter City Council elections In March 1919, Mary belonged to the National Union of Societies for Equal Citizenship (NUSEC), the new name for the NUWSS. This had close links with the Labour Party. It adopted a six-point reform programme and was finally disbanded after the passing of the Equal Franchise Act in 1928. i More information on Suffragists and Suffragettes along with many other topics can be viewed on the Ivybridge Heritage & Archives Group website

CPR, FIRST AID AND DEFIBRILLATOR TRAINING The local policing team, in partnership with Derriford Hospital, will be offering CPR, first aid and defibrillator training to local residents soon. Places will be allocated on a first come, first service basis, therefore those interested should email Tamsyn.Dingley@ devonandcornwall.pnn.police.uk as earliest as possible. ‘Ringing the Changes’ is still going on in Ivybridge. Police advice is simple – as a rule, you will know most of your customers, and if someone you don’t know comes in and starts asking to change notes, just say no.

STUDENTS CONQUER TEN TORS CHALLENGE Students from Ivybridge Community College enjoyed success at this year’s Ten Tors expedition. Over the weekend of 12th-13th May six teams successfully completed the expedition. Three of the teams walked under the college name, with a further three representing local walking club the Erme and Yealm Valley Hillwalking Club. Four teams completed the 35-mile challenge, one team undertook the 45-mile challenge and one team conquered the 55-mile challenge. The teams set off from Okehampton Army Camp at 7am on the Saturday morning and experienced quite good conditions Some of the successful Ten Tors teams

over the weekend. All teams had returned to camp before 1pm on the Sunday, with several being the first to complete their routes. In addition to the six teams in the main event, a team of eight students also completed the Fresh Tracks Challenge. As well as completing a 13-mile route on the Saturday, they also had to lead a Dartmoor pony around with them. The exceptional success of all of those involved is a testament to the demanding eight-month training process that they have followed. This year’s training saw the group camping in snow as well as walking in unseasonably warm temperatures.

OSCAR WILDE SEASON LIVE: AN IDEAL HUSBAND Tue 5 Jun 7.15pm. A new production of Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband, to be broadcast live to cinemas from the Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End. Directed by Jonathan Church, this entertaining and still topical play brings an act of political sin into the heart of the English home. As an ambitious government minister, Sir Robert Chiltern’s smooth ascent to the top seems assured until Mrs Cheveley appears in London with damning proof of his previous financial chicanery. Tickets: £16/£15/£14. DARKEST HOUR [PG] Thu 7 Jun 2pm & 7.30pm. A thrilling and inspiring true story begins at the precipice of World War II as, within days of becoming Prime Minister of Great Britain, Winston Churchill (Academy Award nominee Gary Oldman) must face one of his most turbulent and defining trials: exploring a negotiated peace treaty with Nazi Germany, or standing firm to fight for the ideals, liberty and freedom of a nation. As the unstoppable Nazi forces roll across Western Europe and the threat of invasion is imminent, and with an unprepared public, a sceptical King, and his own party plotting against him, Churchill must withstand his darkest hour, rally a nation, and attempt to change the course of world history. THE MERCY [12A] Tue 12 Jun 2pm & Thu 14 Jun 7.30pm. The true story of amateur sailor Donald Crowhurst and his attempt to win the first Golden Globe singled-handed round the world yacht race in 1968. Partly filmed in Teignmouth. ROH LIVE: SWAN LAKE Tue 12 Jun 7.15pm. Swan Lake has had a special role in the repertory of The Royal Ballet since 1934. This season The Royal Ballet creates a new production with additional choreography by Artist in Residence Liam Scarlett. While remaining faithful to the Petipa-Ivanov text, Scarlett will bring fresh eyes to the staging of this classic ballet, in collaboration with his long-term designer John Macfarlane. Prince Siegfried chances upon a fl ock of swans while out hunting. When one of the swans turns into a beautiful woman, Odette, he is enraptured. But she is under a spell that holds her captive, allowing her to regain her human form only at night. Swan Lake was Tchaikovsky’s fi rst ballet score. Tickets: £16/£15/£14 Berliner Philharmoniker – Sir Simon Rattle Wed 20 Jun 6.30pm. The Berliner Philharmoniker orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle for the last time. On 14 November 1987, a promising conductor called Simon Rattle made his Berliner Philharmoniker debut with Gustav Mahler’s Sixth Symphony. Looking back Rattle says: “I felt that I was finding my voice on that day.” Mahler’s multifaceted work is again on the programme when Sir Simon appears for the last time as chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Tickets: £13/£12.

ARE WE LOSING THE ABILITY TO COMMUNICATE?

EMBARRASSING FEET?

By Yvonne and Diane of Ivy Counselling / Brighter Futures

Please talk to me In today’s age of technology, when we appear to be engrossed by Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap Chat etc, are we losing the ability, or the want, to communicate and take an interest in others lives by talking? We acknowledge there is a place for social media, however, is it about being socially aware and creating a balance? It feels sad that so many of us have

Experts in Musculoskeletal & Neurological Physiotherapy Brain injury Shoulder pathologies & injuries Back & neck pain Spinal injury Stroke Muscle and joint injuries Mulple Sclerosis Parkinson’s Disease Mobility problems Complex mul-trauma injuries

resorted to technology. While we are going around in our day-to-day lives, we often witness families out together but all focused on their phones rather than communicating with each other, talking about what they are sharing and discussing what they are experiencing. We are finding that clients accessing our service due to relationship difficulties are identifying that the main contributory factor is a breakdown in communication. As counsellors, we are committed to help people communicate their thoughts, feelings, fears and expectations. We sit with them while they delve into their worlds and unpick what is impacting on their lives. We become aware that we might be their only source of inter-personal communication. How about giving yourself time away from your mobile and talking to those around you? You might find you enjoy it! i Ivy Counselling - 01752 891929 / ivycounselling.co.uk | Brighter Futures Plymouth - 01752 891929 / brighterfuturesplymouth.co.uk

It’s not too late to get your feet looking great for summer, says Jackie Thomas of Abbey Road Podiatry Are your heels cracked and sore? Perhaps you have painful corn or callus. There is nothing worse than going on holiday and not enjoying walking because your feet hurt or feeling embarrassed about your feet. There is plenty we can do to help you. A routine podiatry treatment can help with your hard skin and cracked heels. We can professionally cut your nails and treat any thickened or ingrowing ones. If you really want a bit more luxury and pampering, we offer the Prendé Orb warm wax treatment. This is an intensive moisturising

treatment which has the added benefit of soothing aching joints, ideal for those with joint or muscle pain and hard skin. We use essential oils in the wax to create a lovely aroma and a relaxing atmosphere. Damaged toenails can be restored with our Wilde Pedique prosthetic nails. They are so realistic that no-one would even know that you’ve had them treated. Once done they can be treated like normal nails – cut, filed and painted as you like. Just a quick update on Steve and his running... He went out for his first run about three weeks ago, but unfortunately, he sustained an injury to his Achilles tendon which has set back his training. This only goes to show how important it is to ramp up any exercise slowly. We wish him a speedy recovery and hope he gets back to running soon. i Call 01752 426075 or visit abbeyroadpodiatry.com Jackie Thomas BSc (Hons) is a fully qualified HCPC registered podiatrist. FUNERAL PLAN? YES, PLEASE! it’s no concern of ours what the funeral is going to cost and how it is going to be... or is it? There are two sides to a funeral plan: one financial and one extremely emotional. By buying ourselves a funeral plan, we are buying the funeral that we want at today’s prices; the cost of a funeral is going up and up. Big deal? Well, actually yes. First and foremost, our family will not have to try and find the money to pay for our funeral. Moreover, if our estate is liable for Inheritance Tax, paying for a funeral plan is taking that money out of the estate, thus reducing Inheritance

Tax costs. Everything to gain for those left behind and nothing to lose. Then there is the emotional side. I am getting really personal here, because I went through it myself nine years ago. In those difficult times, we need to keep a clear enough mind to organise the care of our loved one, to choose a coffin, church arrangements, flowers, viewing of the deceased. At a time when you only need to be allowed to grieve, these arrangements slap you in the face. When organising a funeral, even if we try and do it the way our loved ones would have wanted, we struggle to think about what

Local broadcaster and reporter Dave Gibbons is hosting a Friends of Ivybridge Library quiz night at The Watermark on Thursday, 7th June, starting at 7.30pm. Teams of four. £5 per person to include nibbles. The bar at The Watermark will be open.

This is a simple, but pleasing arrangement which would delight any recipient. You will need: • A gift carrier bag • Cellophane paper • 2/3rds of a block of Oasis foam • Bunch of mixed flowers, leaves and berries Prepare your bag by cutting the cellophane so that it is taller than the bag. Place this inside the bag, with the edges above the bag. Wet your Oasis foam (place it in a bowl of cold water and let it soak until it begins to sink and turns dark) then place it in the bottom of the bag. Prepare your flowers by trimming the stems and removing any leaves which would be too far down inside the bag. Place your foliage at the edges of the bags and then fill your bag with your flowers/berries, placing them in the foam at angles as well as upright. Mix the flowers so that the differing shapes/colours are not massed together.

they told us in the past, if they ever did so. A funeral plan makes sure that those left behind don’t have to make these decisions, A funeral director will already be appointed and all the details arranged. The surviving family will be allowed to grieve, who will smile through their tears, being grateful that they’ve been spared this pain. Funeral Plan? Yes, please!

For some, discussing matters like a Will is not an easy task. There is this feeling that, once we have discussed a Will and its provisions, suddenly the Grim Reaper will appear and take us away. Obviously, such a thing is not going to happen... Much, much worse is a discussion about a funeral plan because it forces us to imagine our funeral, our coffin, the hearse and people crying for our loss, all dressed in black. However, have we ever thought to move the focus from ourselves to the ones we are going to leave behind? It could be argued that we are going to be dead anyway,

DEALING WITH PROBATE PASSING ON WEALTH In tough economic times, it comes as no surprise that people are cost-cutting at every possible opportunity. This can, however, come at a large cost. When a loved one dies, you may be left with the responsibility of dealing with their estate, whether through a Will or through the Laws of Intestacy. The role of personal representative/executor is an important one, it is also one that should not be undertaken lightly. It is a common misconception that debts die with the deceased. If the estate is able to make payment of the debts, then you are under a duty to ensure that the debt is paid. You are not personally responsible for the payment of debts owed by the estate if it is unable to pay it, unless you have made a mistake in the distribution. If you take on the role as an executor you may be personally responsible for:

• Reduced value of estate assets (if you could have reasonably avoided it). Eg accepting a below-market price for a property. •Fines/interest imposed by Inland Revenue. •Expenditure which is normally re-claimable out of the estate (eg estate agents fees) where there is not sufficient money. •Overpayments to beneficiaries. Executors also have a duty to use an appropriate degree of care and skill, which includes ensuring that the assets are distributed in a timely manner and making sure that assets are secure/insured. If you are given the responsibility of administering someone’s estate, make sure you seek legal advice as soon as possible to ensure you’re not out of pocket. Please contact Katherine Millman (solicitor specialising in Wills, Probate and Lasting Powers of Attorney) Partner at Howard & Over for further details.

expedition, it is acceptable to backpack camp for one or two nights in some areas of open moorland, well away from roads or settlements using a ‘no impact’ approach. Planning and preparation is essential for this type of activity. This includes having the right equipment and navigational skills to survive safely ‘well away from civilisation’ for a couple of days, and crucially, knowing where you are permitted to camp. This is the only type of camping permitted on open moorland, however, it is not permitted on all open moorland, so checking the interactive camping map on our website is essential to find out where you can pitch. • Travel light – a well-prepared backpack contains sufficient equipment for a basic overnight stay. If this is not enough and you need more stuff and facilities – use a campsite instead. • Stay out of sight – backpackers should use very small and lightweight tents which easily

blend into the landscape. Part of the enjoyment of experiencing Dartmoor is its unspoilt and vast landscapes, so it is important that other people’s enjoyment of the Moor isn’t impaired by tents dotting the view. • Tread lightly – Dartmoor is beautiful, don’t spoil it by lighting fires or leaving waste behind. Put everything back in your backpack and take it home. If you worry about carrying your rubbish out, need a bin or a toilet, then this type of camping isn’t for you, use a campsite. To find out more about the different types of access you have to the Dartmoor countryside, including backpacking camping areas, campsites, camping barns, youth hostels and bunk houses, view ‘Where to camp on Dartmoor map’ on our website – www.dartmoor.gov.uk. There is also useful information about camping within the military ranges and emergency information. To find out where you cannot camp view schedule 2 of the byelaws.
