GUIDES LAUNCH BADGE IN COMMONS Three Ivybridge Guides visited the Houses of Parliament to take part in the launch of a new badge for the GirlGuide movement. The Breaking Barriers badge is about how girls across the globe can break through the barriers holding them back. The Ivybridge Guides, Becky, Anna and Dani, have been involved in the development of the badge and were excited to be able to share with politicians the purpose of the new award. At the special launch event, the girls met Justine Greening MP, the Secretary of State for International Development, who told them how the UK is helping girls around the world overcome barriers. The girls also had the chance to ask the minister questions suggested by other girls in the Ivybridge Guide unit. While in the Commons, the girls were presented with their badge by Justine and had a chance to meet Chief Guide, Gill Slocombe. Afterwards they also met the town’s MP, Gary Streeter, who always shows a keen interest in what the Guides are doing.

A “soft market test” by South Hams District Council has indicated that there is commercial interest in such a scheme, which would be a bespoke approach to Ivybridge to release potential of the site, as well as maximise the River Erme as the town’s greatest asset. A report, recently considered by the district council executive, recognised the unique challenges and opportunities the centre presents, including the potential to rebuild the leisure centre on-site alongside other uses, potentially including small-scale retail, a hotel and restaurant.

Well, spring is almost upon us and one of the things most associated with this time of the year are little lambs merrily skipping and playing in the sunshine. The lambing season also coincides with the ground nesting bird season and this is why you may start to see signs around the moor asking all dog owners to keep their dogs on leads, so as to prevent sheep worrying and to stop fragile birds’ eggs being trampled. The birds include the meadow pipit, wheatear, skylark, stonechat and ring ouzel to name but a few, and a lot of these birds are becoming endangered and on the brink of extinction in some cases. So please tread carefully whilst enjoying the moor and where possible try to stick to more defined paths and routes. As March is the end of our financial year, Ella and I will be finishing the last of our paperwork, surveys, chasing up contractors and generally getting prepared for year end. We will also be planning for the new financial year, including submitting our working rota for the summer, planning new volunteer and outreach days and looking at more large-scale works where needed. On Thursday, 30th April, Ella and I, along with South Hams Connect, will be parked up in The Watermark car park with our outreach van from 10am until 4pm, available to assist with any queries or questions regarding the National Park and South Hams District Council. The theme for Fairtrade Fortnight 2015 in Ivybridge is TEA! Many of the shops and businesses in Ivybridge now sell and serve Fairtrade tea, but only 9% of the total amount of tea drunk in the UK has the Fairtrade label. So there is still a long way to go to help more tea producers get a fairer price for their product. The Lions Club of Ivybridge is holding an auction and entertainment evening to raise money for the Devon Freewheelers. Entertainment will be provided by the Tamar Valley Male Voice Choir, who will be singing popular music and show tunes. There will be some amazing auction lots going under the hammer, including a hot tub experience with champagne, a ride on the South Devon Steam Railway with access to the train footplate, a full car service and much more. The Diana Boutique Fashion Show is a well-established event in the Ivybridge calendar, and aims to raise the profile of Ivybridge businesses as well as promoting the boutique and raising money for a different charity each time. Local MP to open local artist’s debut exhibition

An Ivybridge artist was delighted when the town’s MP offered to open her first exhibition. Eve Hayman had been showing Mr Streeter, who is the Conservative MP for South West Devon, some of her paintings, and he was so impressed with her work that he offered to open the exhibition. Eve was delighted by his offer and gratefully accepted; it also led her to painting his portrait for the display. Although often commissioned to paint pet and people portraits, Eve has never put her work on public display and is excited by the project, which she had not expected to happen. “After attending Plymouth Art College in the 70s, life, as they say, got in the way and I spent the next 30 years bringing up a family and working in the building industry jointly running Hayman Construction, first with my husband and then with my son, dabbling only now and again in watercolours,” said Eve. when asked about her art background. Art was always her first love and when she discovered oils about five years ago she found it was the perfect medium to paint portraits

Re-discovering her passion for art and painting has been a life-long ambition and her work has received acclaim from far and wide, selling paintings in London and abroad as well as locally. “I particularly love painting children playing on the beach, trying to capture their concentration and

innocence, and painting people relaxing and enjoying themselves in lovely scenery,” commented Eve. The exhibition will be held in The Atrium at The Watermark. THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 RECOUNTING LIFE IN THE TOWN O OO REMEMBERING THE FALLEN

y March 1915, the Great War had been raging for six months. Those who had believed it would be over quickly were now having to reconsider. In Ivybridge it was beginning to have an effect. There were Belgian refugees in the village. More and more young men were enlisting into the army and the navy. Horses were being taken by the military – most for use as draught animals, rather than for the cavalry. The Stowford Mill archives tell us that prior to a visit by a military requisition team a worker was instructed to take one of the “best stallions” and hide it near the railway viaduct. Then, in late March, came the sad news of the death of another Ivybridge soldier. Private Arthur Horton was the son of Phillip and Elizabeth Horton. He was born in Plymouth, but in 1915 his parents lived at 5 Belmont Road, Ivybridge. Arthur had been a regular soldier. The 1911 census lists him as aged 21 and serving overseas with the 2nd Battalion, the Devonshire Regiment. He left the army sometime after that, but was still on the army reserve list. Arthur was a Reservist when the war broke out. The 2nd Devons had been based in Cairo at the outbreak of war and returned to England on 1st October, 1914. Arthur re-

The 2nd Devons were heavily involved in battle of Neuve Chapelle, fought between the 10th and 13th March, 1915 (the aftermath is depicted in the French postcard above). It was part of an Allied offensive in the Artois region of France, and 40,000 British and Indian soldiers took part in the attack on Neuve Chapelle. The British broke through the German defences, but were unable to exploit their success. They suffered appalling casualties: 7,000 British and 4,200 Indian troops were killed, wounded or missing. Arthur Horton was one of those killed as a result of the fighting at Neuve Chapelle. He died on 12th March, aged 25, and is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, France. Boulogne was about 50 miles from the fighting and in 1915 there was a British military hospital there. It can be inferred from this that Arthur was wounded and died of those wounds in the hospital.

Ivybridge Town Council considered its budget in January 2015 and approved a small increase of £3.25 per year per household for a Band D property. Any increase in Council tax is carefully considered and each Committee looks at the services being delivered for the year ahead and decides whether there needs to be an increase to enable the demands to be properly met. The Council also explores external funding options but these invariably need contributions to be found. Some of these might be provided by new developments due for Ivybridge and the borders of the town in the year ahead, so we work with South Hams District Council to ensure that they are aware of the pressures on our town which would be increased by a bigger population. Our voluntary groups are offering an increasing number of key services, whether supporting the police, via Street Pastors, or helping elderly people in their homes, via Ivybridge Caring. The local Methodist Church and

Salvation Army are being very proactive in a partnership with the Town Council, to offer new youth services following the withdrawal of Devon County Council. The big challenge is to try and establish what the town needs, consulting with users, and then seeking to provide it – generally in partnership with local voluntary groups, supported by the Town Council with grants. Another example is the Scout and Guide Groups who have been struggling with a very old building at Victoria Park. Already hundreds of young people and adults, some with disabilities, meet in the building each week but the adaptations needed will be significant and lottery funds tend not to support groups from areas like Ivybridge that are not considered to be deprived. Changes to the way The Watermark operates by sharing some space with the Library services and hopefully enabling more Library opening hours (eg Wednesdays) will benefit the town and offer increased opportunities and efficiencies. CREATING TAPESTRIES ROMAN BATTLE RE-ENACTMENT A Roman Army used a classic square formation with interlocking shields to defeat the Celts in the mock battle re-enacted by year 3 and 4 children at Woodlands Park Primary School. The great battle was the exciting climax of three days of workshops on the Romans and was watched by the parents and friends of the children.

The workshops were given by experts from the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter. The children had the opportunity to meet a Roman legionary soldier, learn Roman battle skills and drills using Latin commands. They were also given a chance to handle artefacts, try on costumes and compare Roman life with their own.

Fridays have a new look at Manor Primary. Each week, all the children now take part in ‘enrichment afternoon’. The children choose a new activity each half-term and join a mixed aged group to enjoy pursuits such as cookery, art, bushcraft, singing, bookmaking and cross-country. New activities are being added and the children have the chance to work with and get to know different children and teachers. As part of their work about the Dark Ages, Curlews class have been investigating using vegetable and fruit to create dyes and learning about the Bayeux tapestry. The children learnt about how the Anglo Saxons would use natural products to dye the woollen material they had woven. They worked in groups to choose a vegetable or fruit to create a dye and then tested their concoction on white cotton. Having created some naturally-dyed material, they then went on to design a panel for a Stowford Tapestry inspired by what happens at school every day.

My eight-year-old son William (inset) is desperate to get something he has helped write in print, so when I was thinking about what to write this month he convinced me that telling others about the ‘growing pains’ he and other children experience would be useful for other parents and grandparents, and of course allow him to help with writing the editorial. William describes ‘growing pains’ as pains at night in the leg, especially in the thigh and shin area. They feel like severe stretching pain and tightness in the leg muscles and can wake him up from sleep. ‘Growing pains’ usually affect children aged between 3-12 years, and are more common after an ‘active day’. Despite being called ‘growing pains’, there is no clear evidence to suggest that growing pains are the result ofS growth spurts. This is why some doctors prefer to use the

If your child’s symptoms do not fit that of ‘growing pains’, or you are concerned, you should take your child to see a GP as they may have an underlying medical condition. You can give your child pain relief medication, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen, to manage the pain if required. Your child will ‘grow’ out of these aches and pains and although they can be distressing, growing pains do not cause long-term harm. If in doubt, please do see your family GP. WINTER FAREWELL The February meeting of Ivybridge Flower Club took the form of an in-house workshop, with members challenged to interpret ‘the last days of winter’. Each design was different in style and execution, with the appropriate plant materials and accessories being used. Hilary Newcombe was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a card from members to mark her Golden Wedding Anniversary. Members were reminded of the annual quiz night taking place at the rugby club on 24th February and a meal at Turtley Corn Mill being held in March. The club’s next meeting is on Monday, 9th March, at the Library, starting at 7.30 p.m. The demonstrator will be Catherine Gardner and her title will be ‘Super Springtime’. Visitors welcome, £5. Planting a plant well makes all the difference to its success and survival. • Avoid planting when the soil is either sodden or frozen. If this is the case, wait for better conditions. • When ready to plant, stand the plant in a bucket of water until no more bubbles rise from the compost and it is thoroughly wet. • Meanwhile, dig a hole twice the size of the pot. If the soil is dry, fill with water and allow to drain away. Fork over the bottom and add plenty of compost or well-rotted organic matter. • Remove the plant from its pot and put it gently in the hole, ensuring that the top of the root ball is just below the level of the soil. • Stake, if you are planting a tree • Fill the hole with soil and compost, firm well to avoid air spaces around the roots, mulch with a good layer of organic matter and water well. • Keep well watered, and continue to do so for several months until the root system is well established. • Protect newly planted trees, hedges and shrubs from the elements with a temporary netting windbreak if the spot is windy or exposed. Add suitable plant feed during the growing months to boost your plant's progress.

What to do in your garden this month General tasks and garden maintenance Frosts can still be a hazard, so keep vulnerable plants protected at night if frost is forecast. March winds are also notorious for their ferocity, so check exposed plants are well supported. Now is the time for a thorough spring clean; weed and dig over your borders incorporating as much organic matter as you can – those chilly winds will really help to dry out the soil. Mulch bare soil once you have done the work and remove moss and weeds from paths, terraces and driveways. They may be boring tasks, but if you don’t get on top of the garden now (especially the weeds!) it will be a nightmare for the rest of the season. Clean and repair your garden tools, book the lawn mower in for

a service and check garden furniture for any rot. When it is warm enough, treat sheds, fences and trellis with wood preservative; brushes and rollers are fine for most things, however a sprayer is well worth buying for tricky projects such as woven panels!

Lawns

If it is very wet, keep off the lawn as much as possible – damage to waterlogged lawns is easily inflicted, irritatingly hard to rectify. When the weather improves and the lawn has had a chance to dry out, give it a first cut with the blades on the highest setting –

don’t be tempted if conditions are wet! Reseed bare patches, neaten the edges with a half moon cutter or spade and remove molehills and wormcasts. If you are planning a new lawn, start preparing the ground for seeding or laying turf. Ask for advice in your local garden centre if you are unsure of how to begin.

Trees, shrubs & climbers

Plant and move evergreen shrubs, conifers and trees and remember to water them well until firmly rooted in. Plant evergreen hedges such as laurel, yew and box and again keep them well watered in dry spells. A good soak once a week is better than superficial watering on a regular basis.

and runner beans - this is really worth the effort! Dig a trench a minimum of a spade's depth and put in a generous layer of wellrotted manure or compost (as for sweet peas). Do the same for courgette plants. Plant out your early potatoes at the end of the month - or if you haven’t already done so, start chitting your seed potatoes - put them in a light, cool place with the end showing the most ‘buds’ uppermost - an old egg box is ideal. If you have a frost-free greenhouse, get ahead with the summer crops - sweet peppers, tomatoes, aubergines and salads can be planted inside (if it remains cold, check the temperature requirements on the seed packet and wait if necessary).

The latter also applies to forsythia (prune once it has finished flowering by cutting back flowered shoots down to a new shoot further down - all the new growth this season will flower next year) and to flowering currants (Ribes). Feed woody plants with general purpose fertiliser – this applies to roses, trees, climbers, hedges and shrubs. Feed acid-loving plants, such as camellias and rhododendrons, with ericaceous feed if you are on neutral or alkaline soil. A dose of sequestered iron also helps prevent the leaves turning yellow. Finish pruning your roses and start spraying them with fungicide to ward against black spot and mildew. Repeat every fortnight until the autumn. Prune hydrangeas – do not remove stems with a bud at the top, but snip off old stems bearing deadheads to just above the topmost healthy bud and remove weak shoots altogether from the base. Many vegetable crops can be sown this month - wait until the weather turns warmer, check the instructions on the seed packets and plant away! Broad beans, early peas, carrots, lettuces, spinach, salad leaves, leeks and chard are just a few ideas to get your healthy, cheap and homegrown food underway! Plant Jerusalem artichoke tubers bury them 1” deep and 12-18” apart - but remember they spread like wildfire unless you dig up every last one at harvest time. Plant shallots, garlic and onion sets as well as asparagus crowns in friable, well-drained soil. Harvest the last leeks, Brussels sprouts, sprouting broccoli and cabbages. We have also seen a huge increase in the number of pre-paid funeral plans being bought as funeral costs are rising so quickly, and a funeral plan guarantees the funeral is paid for at today’s price and for those left behind unpleasant decisions are avoided at a most difficult time.

Four-year-old Daisy-Jo Hosking had her long locks cut short to help a charity that makes real-hair wigs for children suffering with cancer. Daisy’s drastic haircut at the end of January raised £585.49 for The Little Princess Trust. As well as raising sponsor money, she also donated her hair towards making a wig. The real-hair wigs can cost around £350 to buy, but the charity give them to the children for free. Daisy’s mum Nina said: “A big, big thank you to everyone who supported Daisy! “Thank you to Kate at Serenity for doing the cut for free and to all the clients who donated money towards the cause.” • The Little Princess Trust provide real-hair wigs, free of charge, to boys and girls across the UK and Ireland who have lost their own hair through cancer treatment. home&garden Flower arrangement

SPRING BOWL For this naturalistic and loosely triangular arrangement I used: _ A favourite bowl 2-3” deep _ 2 bunches Tulips minimum _ 16 blooms; cost £5 FOLIAGE _ 3 branches of Contorted (twisted) Hazel with catkins _ 5 leaves of Arum Italicum pictum graduated medium to small _ 3 smaller leaves of Fatsia _ Large sprays of Fatsia seedheads _ Sprigs of Box both evergreen and variegated _ Sprays of Daphne Odora very scented _ Stems of unopened Camellia buds with leaves removed _ 2/3rds large block of Oasis(floral foam) _ Florists tape Soak the foam and secure to the bowl with tape. Place the hazel branches, tallest centre back and a shorter one to each side forward at the front to create a curved fan shape of wildly twisting stems which overhang the bowl. To the left front, group the Arum leaves and overlay to appear natural. At the back right, behind the hazel, group the larger Fatsia leaves similarly to create depth. Use sprigs of Box to fill in and conceal the sides of the oasis all round.

Place a large spray of Fatsia seedheads just to the left of centre front as a focal point. Prepare the tulips by removing all lower leaves. The top leaves can be rolled back to add contrast and variation in shape. Arrange the Tulips amongst the twiggy hazel with one tallest centre back, one shorter just behind and one each side at left and right front of the bowl. Fill between these with more tulips and as you come forward shorten the stems maintaining a loose triangular shape, approx 10” deep front to back. Place the Camellia buds and the Daphne Odora sprays amongst the Tulip stems. Fill any gaps, not forgetting the back, with sprigs of Box, Daphne and Fatsia seedheads, and any tulips left. It should look good from any angle. Note that your Tulips will not stay `put` exactly as they carry on growing, and their heads follow the light changing your arrangement a little daily. Quite amusing to see. To refresh, water the oasis regularly. Alternative foliage to use; hedgerow hazel with catkins, bergenia leaves, Ivy leaves and trailing variegated form, forsythia, hebe, pussy willow and Mahonia flower spikes. Your gardens will soon have daffodils, narcissi, and camellias blooming, so your arrangements need cost nothing more than some absorbing leisure time, as members of Ivybridge Flower Club can testify.

Harriers enjoy the ‘first chance’ l athletics

Erme Valley Harriers were out in force at the popular First Chance 10K at Exeter, with some excellent results. The course is mainly flat and the conditions were good for running, as it was a dry but cold day and no wind. Allister Bristow had a particular fine run, coming home 5th overall and 2nd mv40. Paddy Trinder continued his good start to the year with a fine run. Alison Thorn and Cleo Perry also had excellent runs. Thorn was 1st fv40 and Perry 2nd fv40. Sam Perry also did well and was 1st fv45. At the Braunton 10 mile road race, Alison McEwing had a superb run and was 1st lady in a time of 63.55. Several Harriers’ youngsters in the under 11 age category enjoyed their cross country outing on the Parke Estate, near Bovey Tracey. 38

TEAM OF THE YEAR

Ivybridge Rugby Football Club were the winners of the prestigious Team of the Year award at The Herald Sports Personality of the Year 2014. The club were announced as Team of the Year at a glittering ceremony at The Pavilions. The award followed a highly successful 2013-2014 season. Former Welsh rugby international Gareth Thomas gave the keynote speech while Olympic silver medal winner Sharron Davies copresented the evening. Achievements were recognised for these proud award winners

Netball ladies’ winning start Ivy Ladies Netball Club has made a winning start to its maiden campaign in a local league. The club, which was only started in September, has won three of its first four fixtures in the Plymouth & District Netball League, which is played at the Life Centre in Plymouth. On and off the court the fledgling club is thriving. A good number of players turn out for Sunday morning practice sessions at Ivybridge Community College, they have a sponsor and a coach is now helping the group to progress. Club secretary Emma Tayler said: “Many of the ladies hadn’t played since school, but enthusiasm has taken hold and its surprising how quickly everything comes back to you! “When we don’t have a match,

many of the group are keen to meet up for additional fitness sessions, it’s a very friendly bunch.” The team have new kit and dresses thanks to sponsorship from Manning & Co Financial Advisers. Additionally, Devon Active have provided funds to help with training. The team is hoping to build on its early success and progress as the season continues. The club meets at ICC sports hall every Sunday between 9.3010.30am for practice. Time is spent working on ball skills and tactics, and everyone gets to play in a game. The sessions are open to all and are £2.

SWIMMERS CELEBRATE YEAR’S ACHIEVEMENTS A successful year of achievements was celebrated at Dinnaton Swimming Club’s annual Presentation and Awards evening, held this year at Boringdon Golf Club. Olympic gold medalist and world record holder Ruta Meilutyte, as

well as Plymouth-born Olympian and Commonwealth silver medalist Antony James, were on hand to present the awards. Achievements were recognised from Learn To Swim through to Senior Squad members and Masters (over 18). Youngest recipients were just 5 years old, through to Girls Club Captain Charlotte Craigie, 15 year old Jack Northmore and 12 year old Cole Haigh, who all walked away with an armful of trophies. The club can now boast a large number of swimmers who can compete regionally, as well as young Cole Haigh who is on the cusp of competing nationally.
