I HAVE BEEN conscious for some time that it could easily be assumed that the only way to get something in the magazine is if you have access to email, and that this may exclude some people from being part of it. Well, now there is a new way for you to drop me a line. I have teamed up with Ivy Cabs, who have agreed to let me put a box in their Fore Street office for anyone to post items for the magazine. There are more details on page five, including the deadline for posting items.
It was a lovely afternoon and everyone at the club made me, and my nine-year-old daughter Charlotte, who was chuffed to be allowed to have a go too, very welcome. If you are considering taking up bowls, the club would be delighted to hear from you and you can be sure of a very warm welcome. See page 29 for the contact number. THE MAGAZINE continues to go from strength-to-strength and I am looking for people to join me so that it can grow to its full potential – see page nine for details of the positions available.
INSIDE THIS MONTH The council has bid for government cash in a bid to boost the town’s economy – see page 5 for how they intend to spend the money. An Ivybridge laundry company is searching for a young sports enthusiast to back (page 6), Street Pastors are coming to Ivybridge (page 9) and an Ivybridge family gave a lifeline holiday to two boys growing up in the shadow of a nuclear disaster. Plus, there is the regular school reports, clubs & groups, sport, what’s on and columns you’ve come to expect. I hope you enjoy reading this issue!
All information, advertised or provided, is accepted in good faith as being correct at the time of going to press. Opinions expressed in the magazine are not necessarily those of the publisher and editor. I CARRIED OUT my first official engagement as editor last month when I opened the bowling green for the 2012 season! Following the feature on the Bowls Club in the April issue – which generated a great response, from members delighted to see their club in the magazine to residents surprised to learn that there was even a bowling green in the town! – the club kindly invited me to do the honours. I bowled the first wood of the season on the pristine green and played a few ends with members.

IVYBRIDGE TOWN COUNCIL has bid for edged that many of the £100,000 of Government money to fund a series of schemes aimed at boosting the town’s economy. Following an independent review of high streets by retail guru Mary Portas, the Government has invited local authorities to bid to become one of 12 pilot areas, which will each receive ‘Portas Pilot Funding’ of up to £100,000. The council has bid for the full allocation of £100,000 and in its application details eight initiatives to bolster the town – see Council’s £100K wish list opposite. A council spokesman acknowl-
ideas were not new but that they were local solutions to local issues and would in part try to redress past mistakes in the way Ivybridge was allowed to develop. The bid is supported by the Chamber of Commerce and Lavanter Properties, who own Glanvilles Mill.

IN A POLL ON OUR FACEBOOK PAGE, PEOPLE VOTED 7-1 AGAINST MOVING THE WAR MEMORIAL
War memorial move abandoned THE IVYBRIDGE branch of The Royal British Legion has withdrawn its support for a proposal to relocate the town’s war memorial. The idea prompted several complaints, particularly from relatives of some of the men named on the memorial. David Davis, chairman of the branch, said: “We, being a caring organisation, have no wish to upset peopleand have therefore withdrawn our support, and apologise if we offended anyone.”
Books on Wheels rolling again (with a little help from The Ivybridge magazine) IN THE FEBRUARY issue, we reported on the plight of the Home Library Service, which had lost the volunteers who ran the service and was therefore no longer able to run. I am delighted to say that Pam Mayall, local service manager WRVS Home Library Service Devon, contacted me to say that the article brought positive results and the service will resume shortly. Three volunteers came forward and are currently going through the process to become members of WRVS which will allow them to take out books.
Pam now wants to ensure that it is widely known that the service is available again, so if you know anyone who could benefit please do let them know. The service is free and as well as books they also supply large-print books, tapes and CDs and other material, eg special memory items for people with dementia. Anyone wishing to use the service can call the library on 01752 893140 or Pam on 01404 871397, or get a friend or relative to call into the library and the request will be passed on. Chris Jones, a former soldier who was injured in service and who we featured in the March issue, successfully completed his arduous Dartmoor Marathon challenge on 7 April. Chris was supported by his wife Leigh-Ann and son Max and around 30 other participants who cycled all or part of the route with Chris. Chris and supporters (pictured) set off from Burrator Reservoir at 9am and completed the
two circuits of the route, which took them to Princetown and back, well ahead of schedule to finish by 4.15pm. Chris did the marathon to raise money for The Royal British Legion and he is on course to break the £4,000 barrier. Leigh is keen to stress that the offer is open to any youngster, no matter what sport they take part in. “I was a show jumper, so I know how difficult it can be for less ‘fashionable’ sports to get backing.” To be considered you must be under 18 and need to apply in writing and deliver your letter by hand to Leigh at PLS in Costly Street. The closing date for applications is 1 June, 2012. 6

Cycle boost IVYBRIDGE COULD be set to become a cycling hub for South Devon. Sustrans, the UK’s leading sustainable transport charity, is planning to extend its network of cycle routes around the county and new links for Ivybridge feature high in its plans. Two new routes on the National Cycle Network are expected to come to Ivybridge. Within 12 months, it is hoped that The Dartmoor Way will be extended to pass through Ivybridge from Buckfastleigh to Tavistock and Princetown, and a completely new route is planned to go to Salcombe. Sustrans’ policy is that their routes are as safe as possible and, at the same time, by avoiding main roads take cyclists into some of the most scenic areas of Britain. Locally, it is expected that short-break cycling holidays will become more popular and Ivybridge train station could benefit, as most cyclists on these trips like to leave their cars at home.
Your voice DO YOU HAVE a view on how council services should be run? South Hams District Council is looking for local people who would like to be consulted on the development of plans and services in your area. Much of the consultation will be done online, but there will be opportunities to attend events and forums and participate in postal and telephone questionnaires. You can choose to be involved in all consultations or just with those on specific areas and services. Taking caring to the streets STREET PASTORS could soon presence, offering practibe on the streets of the town after the Ivybridge Street Pastors project was launched last month. To celebrate the launch, a special service and presentation was held at Ivybridge Methodist Church on 20 April, which was attended by a host of dignitaries and civic leaders. Street Pastors are Christian volunteers who go out on the streets of their local community as a positive
cal help or a listening ear to people on the streets, for whatever reason. The initiative was endorsed by the town’s MP, Gary Streeter, who said that it demonstrated “we, the people, taking responsibility for a problem and being part of the solution”. The Street Pastors project also has the support of the town council, South Hams District Council and the police.
Ivybridge Street Pastors involves all four of the town’s churches and the management committee, led by Caroline Hodgson, is now seeking volunteers to undergo selection and training to become the town’s first Street Pastors. To find out more, contact Malcolm Knightley on (01752) 894306, email ivybridge@street pastors.org.uk or go along to the Street Pastors’ meeting at the Methodist Church Hall on Tuesday, 29 May, at 8pm.

wo boys who are growing up in the shadow of one of the world’s worst nuclear accidents have been given the chance to enjoy a holiday in a clean and healthy environment thanks to an Ivybridge family. Vanya and Danik, both nine years old, stayed with Sarah and Richard
A HOLIDAY LIFELINE Stephens, and their three children Fletcher, 7, Hudson, 4, and Myleigh, 3, for two weeks during April as part of a four-week visit organised by the Totnes & South Hams link of the Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline charity. The Stephens are the first family from Ivybridge to host children for the charity. Vanya and Danik live in Belarus, which, 25 years after the Chernobyl nuclear explosion, is still dealing with the after-effects of radiation. It is estimated that four weeks in the clean and healthy environment of the South Hams can add two years to Vanya and Danik’s life expectancy. Sarah and Richard volunteered to

be a host family after seeing an advert for the charity and have no regrets. “It has probably been harder than we thought,” said Richard. “Language is an obvious barrier but it has been very enjoyable and rewarding nonetheless.” Sarah and Richard kept to the normal family routine as much as possible and didn’t fall into the trap of thinking they had to treat the boys everyday. “We found that what we would regard as simple things gave Vanya and Danik most pleasure,” said Sarah. “We took them to Bantham beach and they were fascinated by the
sand, shells and sea. Being April, it was pretty cold but that didn’t stop them going in for a dip!” “It’s been good for our children too,” added Sarah. “They have had to learn to play and share with kids from a different culture, and find ways to overcome the language barrier.” Sarah, Richard and the children really enjoyed the experience of having the boys to stay and hope other Ivybridge families will come forward to give more children a lifeline. “It is predicted that one-inthree people over 65 will develop dementia”
Betty’s Memory Cafe makes a real difference to the lives of its users
Dealing with dementia
The Ivybridge Dementia Support Group is holding a quiz night at The Sportmans on Wednesday, 16 May, with all money raised going to the group and the Alzheimers Society.
A
fter living through the pain of seeing a loved one taken by dementia, Frances Reeves launched a dementia support group so that others with this cruel condition, and their carers, need not suffer alone. Frances lost her husband to frontal lobe dementia in 1997 and has first-hand experience of the distress this condition inflicts. “It is very hard to lose a husband under normal circumstances,” says Frances. “To witness him deteriorate as dementia took hold was heartbreaking.” “And, unfortunately, it is something that will be much more common in the future.” It is predicted that one-in-three people over 65 will develop demen-
tia, which will place a huge strain on the health care system. Groups such as the Ivybridge Dementia Support Group (IDSG) will have an important role to play in filling the inevitable gaps. Knowing when dementia starts is not easy to spot. “It takes many years to develop,” explained Frances. “Spotting its onset is difficult; when does our natural tendency to sometimes be forgetful morph into this distressing condition?” IDSG provides multi-faceted support for sufferers and their carers, including phone support for people struggling to come to terms with the disease and can act as a link between sufferers and care services available. The group’s most visible activity is Betty’s Memory Cafe, a friendship
group every other Tuesday in the Methodist Church Hall. The cafe provides a welcome social occasion for people with memory problems, many of whom are elderly, frail and isolated. As well as volunteers, there is always a dementia professional present and Mrs Gert Landers, a specialist counsellor who lost her husband to dementia, devises games and quizzes for the visitors. IDSG has developed links with five homes in the town and on the Tuesdays when the cafe isn’t open volunteers visit the homes. It has also linked up with Ivybridge Caring and Butterpark to develop training for volunteers. Following the government’s recent launch of the first-ever national Dementia Strategy, a plan which explains what needs to happen to radically transform the quality of life for people with dementia and their carers in the next five years, groups such as the IDSG will play a vital role in making sure the strategy leads to real improvements for people with dementia and their carers. Take the circular woodland walk to view the stunning carpet of bluebells together with wild garlic, wood anemones and yellow archangel. This small, seven acre wood was donated to the Devon Trust for Nature Conservation, later to become the Devon Wildlife Trust, in 1965 by one of Devon’s most famous naturalists, the late H G Hurrell of nearby Moorgate. The oak and ash trees tower over the hazel, holly and hawthorn providing a rich habitat for birds but the major conservation interest of the site is the dormouse. Some of the larger trees have been felled to allow more light to reach the ground so that bluebells, honey-

n exciting programme of events has been planned to mark the centenary of the town’s Catholic church. St Austin’s Priory, at Cadleigh, which has its origin in a convent built by a French Order of nuns, the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts, in 1912, has been the parish church for Catholics in this area for a hundred years. To celebrate, parishioners have been actively engaged in planning a whole series of festivities, highlights of which include: the crowning of the Queen of the May on Sunday, 13 May; a Concelebrated Mass with the Bishop of Plymouth, attended by the Plymouth Catholic Choral Society, on Friday, 15 June; a family barbecue on Sunday, 15 July; as well as another of the Priory’s very popular Flower Fr Sean Flannery with parishioners Mary Abbott and Monica Hefford Festivals from 14 to 16 September. 14

“The next 100 years could be just as varied and exciting as the last century,” says Fr Sean, parish priest, as he looks forward to the celebrations. “With the increase in the local population in recent years likely to continue, the Priory continues to develop service to the people of Ivybridge and is looking to the future with renewed confidence.” To find out more about St Austin’s Priory call (01752) 892606 or visit www.ivybridge.net/priory

vybridge is getting ready to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in style, with a number of events being organised to bring the town together. The main event is the Diamond Jubilee Party on Tuesday, 5 June, in Victoria Park. The fun starts at 2pm and the activities and entertainment goes on into the night, finishing at 9.30pm. The party line-up includes musicians, singers, choirs and poets on the main stage, performances by dance troupes, party games, craft workshops and more, and many of the activities will be free. Refreshments will be available or you can bring a picnic. A Big Jubilee Lunch will launch the town’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. The MacAndrew’s Field Big Jubilee Lunch on Sunday, 3 June, is being or-
ganised by the Friends of MacAndrew’s Field, who invite everyone in the community to join them for the celebrations. The afternoon gets underway at 12.30pm and there promises to be fun for all the family. As well as games for the children, there will also be a ‘Best Crown’ competition – the Friends would love children to come wearing their crowns to make this a right Royal occasion. You can bring a picnic for yourself or food to share. There will be plenty of room for picnic blankets and chairs, even your garden gazebo if you wish to bring it. A marquee, kindly loaned by Ivybridge Scouts, will also be on hand in case the sunshine is of the liquid variety. The MacAndrew’s Field Big Jubilee Lunch will be a great opportunity for the community to get together and enjoy fun and friendship.
Celebrate in verse – still time to enter Budding poets still have time to mark this auspicious year for our Monarch, Queen Elizabeth II in verse by entering the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee poetry competition. Poems should to be submitted to either the library or the town hall (both in Erme Court) – or you can email your poem to deptown clerk@ivybridge.gov.uk – by Friday, 18 May, 2012, along with the entry form printed on page 13 of the April issue of The Ivybridge magazine.
ARE YOU ORGANISING A DIAMOND JUBILEE EVENT? If so, send us the details and we will publicise it in the June issue. You can email us at events@theivybridgemagazine.co.uk or post the details in our new drop box in the Ivy Cabs office in Fore Street. Deadline for inclusion is 12 May. LOU HAWTHORNTHWAITE
Editor bowled over to open green Checking to see who won the wine
THERE WAS A great turn the first, ceremonial out of members and visitors when I had the honour of opening the town’s bowling green for the 2012 season on 14 April. After I had bowled
wood (pictured), members took part in the traditional spider challenge, where they spread out around the green and bowl one wood towards a jack
in the middle, with the nearest bowl winning a bottle of win. They then made up teams and played a number of friendly ends, and were good
enough to let me join in too. After some competitive bowling we then enjoyed a sumptuous tea provided by the members.

hildren from three of the town’s primary schools – Manor, Stowford and Woodlands – joined singers and musicians from Ermington, Holbeton and Ugborough schools to perform two sell-out concerts at The Watermark. The children wowed the crowds with a varied line-up of performances, which included pop hits like Breaking Free from High School Musical, The Beatles’ Yellow Submarine and Queen’s We Are The Champions fused with Boney M’s Rivers of Babylon on steel pans, a samba band and a great Oasis Wonderwall Medley mix
by an up-and-coming rock band. There was also the more traditional choir and ensemble performances. The show was closed with a marvellous performance of the title song, This Is Our World, by the combined choir. The concerts were filmed and a DVD is available, either via the schools or contact Jim Burns Computer Solutions.

CELEBRATION OF DANCE Adam, Joseph, Harry and Paul
New course tests runners
A SHOWCASE OF the dance work that had being going on throughout the school was put on for parents at Stowford School . During the term, children in both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 had been working with specialist teacher Sharon Kee to produce a dance closely linked with their topic work. The work culminated in two spectacular shows, which saw the children performing dances on a wide range of themes, from the three little pigs and penguins, to India and space.
THIS YEAR’S ANNUAL Primary Schools’ Cross Country event was as popular as ever, with over 130 girls and over 150 boys taking part in the races at Ivybridge Rugby Club. A new, slightly longer, course certainly tested the children, whose determination, especially as Harvey from Manor, who they battled it out in the home straight, was writ- took the boys’ race ten clearly across the children’s faces. Mat Manor School was the top team from the town, (Stowford) with Harvey first home in the boys’ race and the Manor team winning the boys’ trophy.
Shannon, Luke, Josh, Connor and Alfie as pirates below deck
Children from the Swifts and Swallows classes at Stowford School entertained their parents and other pupils with two pirate plays they had written. Pirates and Storms was their topic. Swifts told the story of Captain Two Beard and his crew who went in search of Party Island, a place to celebrate 30 years of piracy, while Swallows entertained the audience with the tale of Captain Brownbeard and his crew who adopted an octopus as their mascot after it saved their treasure. A play about the difficult dilemmas they anticipated that they might face in the next few years wowed parents of Year 5 children at Stowford School. The children have been focussing on how they will grow and some of the challenging situations they might have find themselves in and took six ideas from this and wrote playscripts to illustrate the dilemmas and suggest ways of dealing with them. The scenes covered issues including internet bullying, being offered drugs and making friends in cyberspace.
leaving their classroom was a treat for Year 4 children at Stowford School. Two classrooms were turned into French cafes and the children were invited to come in for a French breakfast. A selection of French food was on offer but the children were only served if they ordered in French!

The 1st May will see a change at the recycling centre. Sita UK have won a competitive tender to run 17 (out of 20) of the recycling centres in the Devon, one of which is here in Ivybridge. In 2010/11 the Ivybridge centre took in some 5,000 tonnes of mixed material at a cost of about £85 per tonne (Devon average £80 per tonne) and recycled about 74% (Devon average 79%). The main reason why the facility is a little more expensive to run and recycles slightly less is because it is such a small and cramped site – when the containers need picking up and removing, the whole site comes to a virtual standstill. I am working on a plan to overcome this in the future. Apart from this, I am quite sure that you will see several improvements at the site – the staff have been working under a number of constraints in the past and I know that Sita have some interesting ideas.

Students work in the spotlight
The students who worked on the school report
Hands-on experience
IVYBRIDGE COMMUNITY COLLEGE hosted the BBC School Report day in March. Some of the college’s Able and Talented Year 8 and 9 students had been working over a number of weeks to produce the school report. As well as visiting the BBC Spotlight studios, they also worked with a variety of producers, cameramen and presenters. The School Report Day was the culmination of their efforts in partnership with the BBC, when the College hosted a live ‘Question Time’ format on BBC Radio Devon Show hosted by David Fitzgerald, while simultaneously recording it for television and producing a variety of news reports for the BBC website. The guest speakers on the ‘Question Time’ panel were college principal Mr Rob Haring, Michaela Breeze, PE teacher and Olympian, Iain Grafton, chair of the college’s Academy Trust Board, and Matt Evans, chief executive of Active Devon.
today? Other questions focussed on the school curriculum, the cost of the Olympics and what academy status means for the college. The conclusion of the students’ work was showcased on BBC South West’s flagship news programme, Spotlight.
Students made up the ‘studio’ audience and asked many challenging questions, including what advice the panel members would give to school leavers, is the media amplifying bad news about the economy, should British forces still be in Afghanistan and are youths treated unfairly
STUDENTS WHO HAD successfully completed a reading challenge were rewarded at a special presentation evening at the college. The Books and Beyond Gold Medal Celebration Evening was attended by 159 Year 7 students and hosted by famous children’s book authors Steve Barlow and Steve Skidmore. The two Steves performed ex-
tracts from their popular children’s books, as well as presenting the medals to those who had successfully completed the initiative. May 2012 THE IVYBRIDGE MAGAZINE

Take BETTER PHOTOS More tips on how to improve the images you take using your digital camera from David Rayner of Ivybridge & District Camera Club
IT’S SAID that the early French photojournalist Cartier-Bresson first coined the term the Decisive Moment for photography. Capturing exactly the right moment was a cornerstone of his work and he certainly called it the Decisive Moment when he wrote about it in 1952. The Decisive Moment has long been a key consideration for many photographers, so today we’ll look at what this means, the tools you have for it, and how you can improve your images by using this tip. It might be obvious, but it still bears mentioning that in order to photograph the right moment one must always think ahead. Whilst it’s true that for some images we may have to take into account the delay time in the camera, for the majority of cases choosing the right moment has nothing to do with speed or technology. I waited almost half an hour for the old man with his wife in a wheelchair to come along and complete the idea I had for the image above. To emphasise the theme I also used a very slow shutter speed, but the image was only made possible by thinking ahead and waiting for the right moment. One might easily have to wait a year or more for some scenes to appear. A new leaf busting forth would be an example, but the average photographer would hardly be ready with his finger on the button all that time! Scarcely any type of photography escapes un30
scathed from ignoring this tip. For just some examples, think of these genres: Landscapes – waiting for the clouds to match the contours of the hills; waiting for the shadows to fall on un-important parts of the image; waiting for the wind to drop so foliage is not blurred; choosing the best time of day for the direction and colour of light. Portraits – catching the subject with eyes open; waiting for an unforced smile or other expression. Seascapes and beach scenes – waiting and testing for the best wave position on the beach; waiting for the wave to recede. Street photography – catching people with legs in the right position; choosing a shutter speed (in S mode) that gently emphasises movement. Learning to plan and pick the right moment will make a step-change in your photography skills. Having thought ahead and planned your desired image, you will notice that
THE IVYBRIDGE MAGAZINE May 2012
For nature photography, anticipating the shutter delay is important
waiting for the moment to occur is also key in every situation. Of course, photo opportunities frequently present themselves and there may not always be time to wait, but do specifically take extra time to make a Decisive Moment photograph now and again. For some types of photography, nature or motor sports for example, anticipating the shutter delay is important. If these are your main interests than you will need an expensive camera to get a very small shutter
delay, but for the rest of us, here are a few tips: • Set the camera to Shutter Priority (S or Tv) and experiment with selecting a suitable shutter speed and possibly a higher ISO setting that shows just a little blur in wings or wheels. Keep that setting for the rest of the day at that place. Try-out and learn to anticipate the shutter delay. • A part of the delay is in focussing the camera, so get into the habit of prefocussing at the point where you expect the subject to be and then keep the shutter half-pressed until the subject arrives at that point. • A technique called panning is a skill that is worth learning. Turning from the hips, not the shoulders, the subject is followed with the camera and the shutter finally squeezed fully down just ahead of the desired background position. The result is a blurred background and a sharp subject. The skill takes a while to perfect, but it’s fun and the results are worth it.

Councillors back arts festival IVYBRIDGE’S FIVE DISTRICT councillors – Michael Saltern, Tony Barber, Kathy Cuthbert, Louise Jones and David May – have each contributed £100 from their sustainable community locality budgets towards the first Ivybridge Arts Festival to be held in October. South Hams District Council has released £1,000 from the Tesco section 106 fund, ring-fenced for Ivybridge, to the Ivybridge First initiative – see page 7.
Each year, he and his owner take part in the ‘Dartmoor Challenge’, which regulars at The Exchange call ‘Bonzos’ Great Adventure’. This year’s adventure is on Sunday, 29 April, when Bonzo will walk 14 miles from Princetown to The Exchange in Fore Street. This is the fourth year in a row that Bonzo has walked and so far he has raised just over £4,000. Bonzo has received great support from customers of The Exchange for his Dartmoor Challenge, as well as from Coastal Timbers, Ivy Cabs and Pheonix Solicitors. Last year’s walk was interupted by torrential rain, so Bonzo is hoping for more favourable walking weather this time. If you would like to support Bonzo there is a collection bucket on the bar of The Exchange. All the money goes to Derriford Children’s Cancer Ward.

Pets’corner Pet health advice from Woodlands Veterinary Group By Jane Hitchings BVSc MRCVS - veterinary surgeon I hope you had a happy Easter. Many of us will have given or received chocolate eggs or bouquets of flowers at this time, so this prompted me to make you aware of two common incidences of poisonings that we encounter at Woodlands – chocolate poisoning in dogs (which can be serious but is often not fatal), and Lily poisoning in cats (which is always serious and often fatal). The chemical in chocolate is theobromide, which is related to caffeine and causes central nervous system stimulation and increases heart and body muscle contractility. Everyone with a Labrador knows just how much they love chocolate and Easter egg hunts! The concentration of theobromide is highest in dark chocolate (high cocoa solids), lower in milk chocolate and very low in white chocolate. So the more expensive the chocolate, the higher the coca solids are likely to be and the more toxic it is likely to be to the dog. Signs are usually seen within 4 hours
Double danger for pets
and include vomiting, tender tummy, drooling, thirst, racing heart, excitability, maybe even convulsions, tremors and rigid muscle spasms. Treatment is to empty the stomach and give repeated doses of activated charcoal. Sedation and rehydration may be necessary. Most cases are successfully treated if the dog is taken to the vet. Lily poisoning in cats does not always have a happy outcome, however, because of the irreversible kidney failure that results if emergency treatment is not started within 18-24 hours of ingestion. All types of lily (Lilium sp and Hemerocallis sp) are extremely toxic
and all parts of the plants equally toxic. Cats are affected as they like to rub up against the flower arrangement and get pollen on their fur and they are also prone to nibbling the leaves or petals. Signs 2-6 hours after contact include vomiting and depression and then from 24-72 hours, kidney failure ie increasing thirst, either increased urination or no urine passed, severe depression, convulsions and death. If you suspect lily poisoning, call your vet immediately, if the cat has pollen on her fur wash it off. The vet will induce vomiting if ingestion has been recent, may flush the stomach and give activated charcoal and will start intravenous fluid therapy and will monitor kidney function. The sooner you get the cat to the vet the better the chances of survival. Obviously, prevention is better than cure, Make sure chocolate is out of reach of dogs and either take Lilies out of an arrangement and have them in a room that the cat has no access too or be very, very vigilant.
Woodlands Veterinary Group is on Cornwood Road, Ivybridge, and offers a friendly veterinary service for all your pets. See their advert on page 4
Tim shows he cares in the long run A WIDOWER has said ‘thank you’ to the people who cared so wonderfully for his late wife by raising over £820 with an epic twocounty run. Tim Peters ran 104 mile from Ivybridge to Penzance in four days to raise money for the Beaconville nursing home and Ivybridge Caring. Tim, who is now a volunteer with Ivybridge Caring, said: “The care given to Jill by Beaconville was wonderful and the respite time that I was given by Ivybridge Caring was a lifeline. This run was a way of saying thank you”
ARMY SELECTION BOARD SUCCESS AN IVYBRIDGE teenager has been awarded a prestigious Army Sixth Form Scholarship. Ivybridge Community College student Miranda Hardacre, 16, was one of only 28 youngsters out of 140 to pass a two-day scholarship competition at the Army Officer Selection Board at Westbury. Candidates from all over the country were assessed on their mental ability, physical fitness and leadership aptitude under the watchful eye of senior army officers. The scholarship, which is dependant on GCSE results, gives Miranda a bursary while she takes her A levels and continues to university, and guarantees her a place at Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, for officer training on completion of her studies.
Miranda’s achievement is even more remarkable as she was one of only a few applicants not already an Army cadet, but she is in no doubt that she has made the right decision in choosing to commit to becoming an Army officer at this early stage. At the end of an exhausting two days she declared it had been “an amazing experience”. May 2012 THE IVYBRIDGE MAGAZINE

SPORT Cricketers set for busy summer
Send your sport report to: sport@theivybridgemagazine.co.uk
IT IS SHAPING up to be a busy summer for Ivybridge Cricket Club at its Filham Park ground, both on and off the field. Adult fixtures started at Filham on 21 April and continue through to September, and junior matches began on 23 April. “It should be a fantastic season of cricket – the busiest yet at Filham,” said club chairman Steve Ansell. “There will be matches in all forms of the game.” Steve is particularly pleased that all the teams have found local sponsors. The U/11 sides are sponsored by Graddon Vending, the U/13s by Gribble’s Butchers and the U/15s by Bandvulc. “We are hugely grateful to the local businesses who have been generous in supporting
our youngsters in this way. “We think that our sponsors recognise that we are firmly rooted in the local community and doing our best to provide a healthy and safe outlet for the youngsters of Ivybridge, and that is why they have been happy to come forward and contribute.” The club will be equally busy off the pitch. The clubhouse bar will be open at weekends and on many weekday evenings to show live Euro football matches, starting with the England v France match on 11 June. The clubhouse will be open again on 27 July for the opening ceremony of the Olympics and will open regularly in the evenings to show events.
Records tumble for Harriers THE OUTDOOR TRACK and field season got off to a recordbreaking start for two of the junior Erme Valley Harriers at City of Plymouth AC Spring Warm-up meeting. U11 Samantha Harris set Jacob Abraham new club records for the 75m and 150m, also winning the long jump, while U17 Carie Robertson broke the 300m hurdles record, and won the long jump and 300m sprint as well. A great meeting for the club saw the youngsters land an impressive haul of medals. A freezing cold and very windy Exeter Arena saw a smaller turnout for the season’s second meeting on 14 April. In spite of the adverse conditions, the club’s eightstrong team brought home 16 medals and impressive new PBs for Nathan Brown in the 800m, Jacob Abraham in the long jump and Carie Robertson in the 200m. It hasn’t only been the juniors smashing records. March saw Emma Lake break a 10-year-old club record at the Bideford half marathon and in the same race Alison Thorn set a new female vet 35 record, repeating the feat the following week in the Southbourne 10k. Jaine Swift set a new female vet 40 record when finishing first lady at the Liverpool Half and Alison McEwing was definitely not fooling around on April 1st when she set a new senior women’s record in the Taunton half marathon, finishing in a fantastic 1.24.38. SWIMMERS ENJOY SUCCESS COMPETITION AT this year’s Devon County Championships was extremely tough but Dinnaton swimmers performed well with many excellent swims and PBs. Megan Bowen (pictured right) is the County Champion for 200m f/c and 200m IM, and she set a new competition best time for her age in the 50m f/c.
Young swimmers at the awards
Annual prize giving Dinnaton Swimming Club held its annual prize giving at The Watermark at the end of February. Over 150 members enjoyed food, dancing and trophies. All swimmers who competed in the club championships were rewarded for their efforts. Town Mayor, Cllr Trevor Parsons was taken aback by the high standard of swimmers.
