LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES FOR VOLUNTARY GROUPS Spring has sprung with a host of learning opportunities for Ivybridge voluntary groups. South Hams CVS (Community & Voluntary Services) is hosting a range of learning workshops as part of its spring learning programme. The programme has been put together following the Facing Forward to 2020 project launched at The Watermark, Ivybridge, in January. Celebrating 20 years of supporting local voluntary and community action, the Facing Forward to 2020 project will help strengthen VCOs that support older and vulnerable people across the district. Affordable and subsidised workshops on topics ranging from

marketing and social media to law and trust applications are taking place at venues across the South Hams. Forthcoming workshops are: • Marketing masterclass, May 5, Totnes, 9.30am-4pm • Writing good press releases, May 26, Ivybridge, 7-9pm • Social media masterclass, June 1, Ivybridge, 9.30am-4pm • Volunteers and the law, June 16, Dartmouth, 9.30-12.30am • Community fundraising techniques, June 30, Totnes, 7-9pm Tutors include Paul Courtney, chair of the Institute of Fundraising South West, Deirdre Makepeace of Makepeace Marketing, and Kyle Hannan of EcoMedia Collective.

For further information and a booking form, contact cvs@ southhamscvs.org.uk A further programme is planned for the autumn, with topics including dementia awareness, mental health awareness, emergency first aid in the workplace, effective communication, and managing volunteers. South Hams CVS has been helping local voluntary organisations, community groups and charities to flourish since 1994 by offering advice and information on a wealth of topics, including funding, volunteers, the law and governance. î Visit www.southhamscvs.org.uk, call 01803 862266 or email cvs@southhamscvs.org.uk to find out more

An Ermington school girl organised a cake sale at her school to raise awareness of epilepsy. Sophie Turner, 11, (pictured above) who goes to Ermington School, held the sale during a break time just before the Easter break to coincide with the Epilepsy Society’s purple day on 26th March to raise awareness for this condition. Sophie has had epilepsy since she was two years old, and, despite it being managed better since she was six, is still effected by the condition, which effects her concentration and she still has partial seizures. Sophie’s sale raised an amazing £314.99 for the Epilepsy Society.

NEWS Dementia conference

The annual Diana Boutique Spring Fashion Show took place on 5th April at The Watermark. The event not only showcases the fabulous fashion collections available at Diana Boutique, but also brings together local businesses to highlight the variety of other services Ivybridge has to offer. One hundred and twenty guests were able to enjoy a welcome

drink while browsing the stands of this years' show sponsors, Blue Mountain Family Chiropractic, Visualise Me (Colour Analysis), Footnote Shoes and jaz interiors. The fashions on show were modelled by customers and friends of the boutique in sizes 8-18. The show also raises money for a local charity, with this year’s beneficiary being the Yealm Branch of

the RNLI. Along with ticket sales, money is raised through a raffle. This year saw a sparkling array of prizes, with weekends away, beauty treatments and vouchers for outfits at Diana Boutique on offer. Almost £510 was raised, which, with matched funding by Santander Bank, means more than £1,000 will go to this worthwhile cause from the raffle alone.

IVYBRIDGE ENCOURAGED TO GET ON ITS BIKE Short guided bike rides every Wednesday evening have started in Ivybridge Organised by Sustrans, the rides will follow the National Cycle Network to South Brent and back and take about one and a half hours. The rides are open to everyone over 11. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. They will take place every week until 1st June. As well as the weekly rides, Sustrans has also organised a ride to the Avon Estuary on 2nd May, and are busy planning a National Bike Week ride on 12th June. PL21 Transition Town teamed up with the group, a leading UK charity enabling people to travel by foot, bike or public transport, for their first guided bike ride of the season on the National Cycle

Network from Ivybridge on Easter Monday. Cyclists dodged the showers to cycle the Dartmoor Way from Ivybridge to the South Devon Steam Railway at Buckfastleigh. The 24 mile route followed the foothills of Dartmoor with spectacular scenery and the group peddled through ancient woodlands, discovered hidden river valleys while all the time overlooked by Dartmoor’s southern tors. Ride leader Graham Wilson said: “Cycling around Ivybridge is always a mini adventure. There are lots of tiny lanes with something new around each corner. “The group’s rides are taken at a leisurely pace to give people confidence, have fun and essential ingredients include coffee and cakes on route.”

Visit Dartmoor and GWR have sponsored the group with a special poster advertising Positive Living by Walking and Cycling on Dartmoor, which is on display at Ivybridge train station. Ivybridge has the only train station with services every day within Dartmoor and it is within easy reach of the Two Moors Way as well as the National Cycle Network. Devon Active Communities contacted Sustrans with the idea to organise the short guided evening rides. If you would like to join the Wednesday evening short guided rides, meet at The Watermark at 6pm. î To find out more, including terms and conditions, visit www.sustrans.org.uk/events

Organisations who support people living with dementia and their families came together for a successful conference in Ivybridge in March. Representatives from local caring groups, Beacon Medical Group, dementia friendly parishes, Woolwell and Ivybridge memory cafes, local councillors and schools heard about the issues faced by people living with dementia. Keynote speaker Ian Sherriff, from Plymouth University, who chairs the Prime Minister’s Task and Finish Group for Rural Dementia, praised the work that is already taking place locally, but highlighted the need to raise awareness of dementia issues. The group considered how dementia friendly their communities are and what needed to be done to improve this. The Four Rivers Dementia Alliance – encompassing parishes around the rivers Plym, Erme, Yealm and Avon, hence the name – aims to improve the lives of people living with dementia and their families; to share ideas, good practice and resources and to develop projects to make the area dementia friendly.

Labour matters Over 80 people attended the ‘Why Labour for the South West?’ event at The Watermark in March. Ben Bradshaw, Gareth Derrick and Sarah Staples explained how Labour Party values can make a difference. Gareth was also confirmed as the party’s candidate in the Devon and Cornwall PCC election on 5th May. See page 9 for more on the PCC elections.

COMEDY COUNTDOWN Members of Ivybridge Theatre Company are busy rehearsing for its summer production to be staged at The Watermark in July. The comedy double-bill features two short plays from very different eras. A Mad Breakfast by Isabel McReynolds Gray is a one-act farce set in the dining room of a 1950s boarding house. The guests arrive for breakfast and hilarity ensues as chaos tops confusion, soon causing one of the new guests to fear for their life. A Jolly Sinister Jape, by Elliot Strange, is a fast-moving, madcap comedy set in the 1920s, with a liberal sprinkling of hilarious period slang, along with mystery and thrills. The show is on Friday 29th and Saturday 30th July, 7.30pm. ITC’s AGM will be held on Wednesday, 18th May, at 7pm at Chapel Place. Everyone is welcome to attend and refreshments

will be served afterwards. The group meet at Chapel Place, Fore Street every Wednesday at 7.30pm. If you have any interest or experience in performing arts or helping back-stage we would love to hear from you! Annual membership is £15 for over 16s. STUNNING PHOTOS The May general meeting of Ivybridge U3A will be held at The Watermark on Monday, 16th May, at 2pm. Keith Mason is returning with some more of his stunning photos ‘here there and everywhere’. The talk will include ‘snippets’ from China to the Alhambra Palace in Granada, to a hot air balloon flight over Ivybridge and a snowy trip in the French Alps. Other subjects will be a quilting exhibition and a traction engine rally at Sorley Cross, near Kingsbridge. In addition, members will ‘visit’ The Garden House at Poppy Time and the Blists Hill working Victorian Village near Ironbridge, and a visit to Venice and the Island of Burano in the Venetian Lagoon. “ FIND OUT MORE: Call the membership secretary on 01364 724700, visit www.ivybridge-u3a. org.uk or email ivybridge.u3a@ gmail.com

Silver canisters were found inside the vandalised Yurt at Manor School

Say ‘no’ to NOSS There has been a rise in ASB/ criminal damage linked to groups of youths who appear to be using ‘NOSS’ – Nitrous Oxide (NO) – in small silver canisters. Recently, the Yurt in Manor School was damaged and a lot of the silver canisters were found inside it. When inhaled, NO it can make

people feel euphoric and relaxed. These canisters are used to give the user a relatively short-lived high when inhaled from a balloon. Although illegal to sell to people under 18, possession is not currently an offence. However, laws relating to legal highs are changing and will include powers to stop, search and seize substances used to obtain a ‘high’.

SCHOOL’S OUTSTANDING TURNAROUND RECOGNISED An Ivybridge school has been judged as outstanding in all areas by government inspectors. The Ofsted rating, which means Manor Primary School is now recognised as being among the best in the country, comes just two years after the school was judged as ‘requiring improvement’. The inspection team described both pupils and staff at the school as ‘motivated and supported... to aim for excellence’.

The report highlights a host of strengths at the school. Teaching is of a ‘consistently very high quality’, pupils’ ‘attitude to learning is exemplary...’ and, as a result, children make ‘rapid and sustained progress’, with academic standards significantly above national averages. Provision in the Early Years, where children get off to a ‘flying start’, was outstanding, as was the school’s ‘well organised and

imaginative’ curriculum, its use of extensive enrichment activities and provision for PE and sport’. Head teacher Karen Dixon said – ‘We are delighted that Ofsted has recognised the quality of provision here at Manor Primary School. Children are at the heart of all we do. It is a privilege to work with them, and it is our desire to provide the best possible education for them that drives us every day.” The Ivybridge magazine

The event, held at The Life Centre in Plymouth, saw teams from schools in the region competing and three of the Stowford teams qualified for the finals; the Boys B team missed out on a finals place by less than two seconds. In the finals, the girls raced first with Girls A team coming in a magnificent first place and Girls B team coming forth overall, just being pipped to a podium place. In the boys’ finals, Stowford Boys A team finished in second place overall, taking the silver medal. Boys A team

The Erme Primary School held a Mini Bake Off Competition to celebrate the launch of the new teaching kitchen. Pre school children right through to adults were invited to cook up something tasty to be in with a chance of winning an extra special prize, with a healthy twist. The competition raised £216.85, and the Friends of the Erme Primary School also received a very generous donation of £250 from David Richardsons Legal Services to help kit out the teaching kitchen space. The money will be put towards the finishing touches for the space, including installing window blinds so that the room can be used even on sunny days. The kitchen will soon be used for classes, and the Friends would like to thank everyone who helped them reach their target a that bit earlier than planned. Kay Winstone, PTA Chair, said: “We have managed to do everything we needed to apart from the specific flooring because the quote came in over £900. “We would like to say a big ‘thank you’ for all the support, both financial and hands-on, and to the volunteers who have worked tirelessly to create the new teaching kitchen, which has turned an unused area of the school into a fabulous asset for the children and school.”

Children who had stood out as having tried their best, overcome difficulties and have a great attitude to learning were recognised with Achievement Awards at Woodlands Park Primary School. Each term, a boy and a girl from each year group is chosen by the staff, for reasons many and varied, for a special achievement award to recognise their effort. @Ivybridgemag // facebook.com/theivybridgemagazine // theivybridgemagazine.co.uk // 07516 539573 // 01752 426522

SCHOOLS

Children from Woodlands Park Primary School visited Ivybridge Memory Cafe recently to entertain clients. As well as playing instruments and singing, they also showed cafe members how to play some of the instruments. As a result of the visit, the memory cafe and school have created a joint venture which will see some of the cafe’s members rehearsing to sing and play with the children at the school’s Woodfest on Saturday, 18th June.

On the last day of the Spring term the children and parents at Manor enjoyed a special Easter tea after school. The choir sang to the parents while they enjoyed a lovely cup of tea and a slice of cake. The Easter bonnet competition was really popular and the winners each won an Easter egg.

Easter came early for the children at Stowford School when they won Heart FM’s Eggy Baby competition. Year 6 pupil Izzy and her mum, Val Law, entered the school in the competition to win 500 Easter eggs for a school in the South West if breakfast presenter Caroline’s son Jack could say the word “egg” before Easter. The eggs were unveiled live on air in front of a large audience of staff, pupils and parents.

The fair, which will be open from 10am until 4pm, is being promoted throughout the South West and it is hoped that the Fair could become the largest in the region. well Top tips to work out exam stress Learning hypnosis for childbirth BY CLAIRE MORGAN-HUGHES Devon Fit Camp

May is the start of exam time, which of course can be a stressful time for parents and students alike. Did you know that your diet and lifestyle can affect your exam performance? The right nutrition and exercise plans can energise your mind and body to get you through revision time and sharpen your memory, improve concentration and boost confidence. Conversely, choose the wrong diet and you can become sluggish and tired. The key to boosting your energy and keeping your concentration levels up are nutritious foods, water and oxygen. My top tips for exam success are: 1. Stay away from caffeine Energy drinks and tea and coffee will give you a short burst of energy but will burn out and give you a sugar crash. 2. Keep your body hydrated Herbal drinks and water hydrate your brain and get it to function at

optimum level, delivering nutrients to the brain and eliminating toxins. 3. Avoid snacking on junk food and ordering takeaways Easy to fall prey to this mistake because you are so busy revising. A long exam is like a mental marathon so endurance is crucial and the right diet is a no-brainer. 4. Get a good night’s sleep Tempting as it is, cramming a week’s worth of revision into one night is never a good idea. Much better to get a solid 8 hours’ sleep. 5. Exercise Exercise can help boost energy levels, clear the mind and relieve stress. Just 20 minutes of fresh air and exercise a day will boost your mood and concentration too. I have supported clients for the last five years who have all felt a huge benefit for taking some time out to get some training in. If you would like more information on how I can help coach you or your child through exams, please feel free to get in touch. Good luck and try not to stress too much.

well BY YVONNE AND DIANE Ivy Counselling / Brighter Futures

Since Ivy Counselling took over Brighter Futures South West a particularly encouraging aspect we have witnessed is the positive effect our unique, specialist anger management programme is having on new clients. Anger can be described as a positive emotion, and is felt by most, if not all, of us at some time. But when anger gets ‘out of hand’ this is when it becomes an issue. Seeking help can be the first step towards understanding the concept of anger. Working collaboratively with us and following our bespoke package will open self awareness and encourage and facilitate change. Coupled with new knowledge, this will help create a ‘Brighter Future’ for yourself primarily, but also family and friends who may have been effected by your anger. Do you... Have a short fuse? Just lose it? Hit out at people? Throw objects? Blame others? Have controlling traits? Are you verF bally aggressive?

Based on clients who have committed to work with, us, we have experienced a 100% success rate We appreciate it takes courage to understand that your angry behaviour is not acceptable. We always start by saying “you cannot change your past, but you can change your future”. We offer a choice of locations, with our Ivybridge and Saltash premises having disabled access. For more information, please contact us.

Specialist Anger Management Counselling

Why Anger Management Counselling? Some people experience difficulties with managing their feelings and emotions and often this can result in feeling resentful and blaming others for the way that they feel. This can often result in becoming frustrated and angry, leading to intimidating, aggressive and abusive behaviour which can ultimately result in violence. People with anger issues can become impatient very quickly which will have a negative impact on their mental and physical health and wellbeing.

At Brighter Futures, we understand conflict, intimidation, aggression, anger, rage and violence very well and the associated feelings and emotions.

Some of our clients have come under their own volition and self referred, others have been assigned to us by Social Services, Education and the Court system.

We work with male and female clients of all ages to empower and enable them to understand anger and we have comprehensive programme strategies that will help those who want to change and become non-abusive, to live fruitful, responsible, caring, happy and meaningful lives.

Some feedback from anger management counselling clients: “Taking the first step of recognising that I had problem and I needed some help to change was tough but I was treated like a human being which was more than I did to people.”

“I wish I had done it years ago. My life was so black and white and my way had to be right. Now I say that my life is full of different colours and I don’t need to be right all the time.” “I use to blame others for my behaviour but now I recognise that the anger is within me. This was a light bulb moment for me and I was so relieved because it meant that I only had to work on changing myself and not the many other people that I used to blame.”

Do you want to change? We are waiting for your call. The first step to a Brighter Future is 07909 498655.

well Overactive bladder – when you can’t hold on WHY FOOT HEALTH MATTERS BY HELENA COSTIFF Cornwood Physiotherapy

It’s a conversation we’ve probably all heard: “Where’s mum?”, “In the toilet”, “Again? She only went 10 minutes ago...” We would ideally urinate about four-seven times a day and perhaps once at night. For many women (and men), the need to regularly urinate more than eight times a day (in the absence of an infection) could be a sign of an overactive bladder. Alongside this increased frequency, the urge to urinate can also be very strong and sudden and may mean you leak on the way to the toilet – the condition is also known as “urge urinary incontinence”. It happens because the bladder muscle contracts more forcefully and frequently than would be ideal. There can also be triggers for this urgency, such as the sight and sound of water, or putting the key in the front door – “latch-key syndrome”.

Lifestyle habits adopted in response to a small leak of urine, or the fear of leak, like drinking a bit less, going to the toilet “just in case” and generally urinating more frequently, often make the problem worse. It can have a real impact on your life; not going out or taking long journeys, constantly calculating where the nearest toilet is, turning down social or job opportunities. Thankfully, well-functioning pelvic floor muscles can help to inhibit the bladder muscle overactivity and improve these symptoms. Physiotherapists can help you ensure your pelvic floor is doing all it can to support you and also guide you through lifestyle adaptations and bladder training to help you to hold on longer. So as summer approaches and holidays (and long journeys) beckon, why not see how physiotherapy can help you hold on? Youth services

Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council Western Road meeting The public meeting on 6th April was well attended and provoked a lively debate, with a number of ideas were put forward. Investigations will continue and where new development can contribute to relieving pressure, rather than making the infrastructure deficiency worse, then every effort will be made to achieve that outcome. The Ivybridge Neighbourhood Plan has recognised the problems and has been trying to find solutions, but not all are within our Parish so it makes it harder to succeed. Our thanks to James Kershaw of South Hams District Council for persevering and trying to tackle the problem of air quality, as well as to Dame Hannahs for coming

Ivybridge Town Council is currently working with voluntary sector and professional youth organisations to ensure that a basic level of youth service continues in Ivybridge following the withdrawal of youth services by Devon County Council. Youth counselling is our main focus, as accessing help for homelessness, struggles with life or sexual health can be critical, and we are working with Young Devon to offer drop-in advice sessions each week on Thursday and Friday afternoons on the top floor at The Watermark. In response to the suggestion that Ivybridge has a celebration for the Queens 90th Birthday on the weekend of 11/12 June we are delighted to advise that Dame Hannahs will be hosting a “Hannahs Royal Garden Party” on Sunday 12th June and the Friends of MacAndrews Field will similarly be having a party. In addition for those who live around the open space in Gorse Way a local resident is looking to arrange a childrens games/picnic event and would welcome support from others. Watch out for more details or contact the Town Hall if you wish to offer support at any of these events. Please contact Lesley Hughes or Julie Gilbert if you would like to know more on any of the issues raised above – the contact details are below.

THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918

RECOUNTING LIFE IN THE TOWN O OO REMEMBERING THE FALLEN

T

he Battle of Jutland hit the area badly. It was fought in the North Sea from 31st May to 1st June and was by far the largest naval battle in the war. Both sides claimed victory, but historians believe Jutland was largely indecisive. Two Ivybridge sailors - James Henry Nichols of Costly Street, a leading stoker aboard HMS Indefatigable, and Stoker 1sr Class Cecil Victor Screech of Belmont Road, who was serving aboard HMS Defence - were killed during the battle, trapped and drowned in the bowels of their ships. When those two ships went down there were just three survivors out of a combined crew of around 2,000 men. A Kingsbridge family lost two sons: Able Seaman Percival Charles Ferris (HMS Defence) and his brother Able Seaman John Langley Ferris (HMS Indefatigable) were both killed. There were many more men from south Devon lost at Jutland – their names are carved on the Plymouth Hoe memorial. RIGHT: HMS Indefatigable

What with two bank holiday weekends, half term and also events such as Ten Tors, it will be busy on the moor this month. Andrea and I will be out and about, so give us a wave if you see us! We have been busy over the last month with a variety of activities, including GPS mapping all of the swaling (controlled moorland burns) and also the unplanned fires. This information is held on a database that we have been adding to over the years, and the information is shared with Natural England who are able to cross-check what was planned and what was actually swaled; all important information for the management of the moorland. We have also popped into local visitor information points dropping off the latest Enjoy Dartmoor edition, which can be found at The Watermark centre if you would like a copy. In addition, we have been making time to visit local parish council meetings where possible, to update local councillors on the work of the Rangers and pass on any wider authority business. Rangers visit these meetings annually to catch up with local news and events and of course take back any queries and usually update the council of the works on rights of way and up and coming events. Currently our paths are being checked (thank you to those that are volunteering their time to do this), and repairs are being made to infrastructure whilst we wait to see how our Public Rights of Way budget is prioritised and divided up (and therefore what proposed larger scale works are to be agreed). Each sector Ranger submits works that they would like to resolve in their area, and these have to be scored and considered under a ‘Dartmoor wide’ approach. This usually means that the ‘worst’ routes are tackled and remaining jobs get added to the ongoing ‘wish-list’. Unfortunately, our budget does not go very far and this was why I recently got involved in the British Mountaineering Council ‘Mend Our Mountains’ campaign – looking to raise £100,000 for environmental projects on some of Britain’s most iconic peaks. This is a crowdfunding project that aims to raise money for some of the nation’s most popular routes within National Parks. In return for donating there are numerous ‘rewards’! It is possible to donate towards a specific route, eg our Dartmoor South Hessary eroded bridleway, or indeed other National Park projects or a central pot. For more information please visit the site at www.crowdfunder.co.uk/mendourmountains See you on the moors…

If you are interested in finding out more about the Ranger service first hand, or think you may need their help please, contact them on: Ella – 07711104546 / ebriens@dartmoor.gov.uk Andrea – 07720509270 / aroberts@dartmoor.gov.uk

BUSINESS NEWS Local solicitor Donna Butler (pictured) has joined SWLaw Solicitors, based on the Lee Mill Industrial Estate. Previously, Donna was private client partner with Howard & Over in Plymstock. She will be continuing this work with SWLaw, which includes wills, lasting powers of attorney, probate and estate administration, as well as challenges to Wills. Donna said: “This is a very exciting position for me. SWLaw offer a very high level of service to clients in a wide range of disciplines, including estate and tax-

ation planning. This is typically carried out alongside a comprehensive review of the client’s cir-

cumstances in preparation for a Will.” Many SWLaw clients also take advantage of advice from the associated practice, SWLaw Investment & Financial Planning. The two firms work closely together to enable clients to benefit from holistic financial and legal advice and carefully planned long-term solutions. Donna added: “We are very close to Tesco at Lee Mill, so why not see me first to chat about your Will, before popping to Tesco to do your shopping? After your shopping trip, you can

What small businesses need to know about the Budget

We have moved!

Same Great Service, New Central Plymouth Location Find our new office at Suite 41, Genesis Building, 235 Union Street, Plymouth PL1 3HN Simon Jilks takes a considered look at some of the measures revealed in George George Osborne’s budget and how they could effect small business owners Whilst I appreciate the spring budget is yesterday’s news, it is always the details that we need to be aware of and how they potentially impact you as business owners. The chancellor’s decisions over the last few budgets will impact small businesses.

I’ll begin with potentially the most controversial, dividend tax, announced last year. Until now, any dividends received, as a basic rate tax payer, were effectively free of tax, which made them a very tax efficient way to extract money from your limited company. As from 6th April 2016, every person can receive only £5,000 per year tax free, the rest attracting tax at 7.5%. If your income is greater than £43,000 then the rate is 32.5%. So what can be done to minimise this? Unfortunately the time has passed to extract as much as possible before the changes (advice we gave to our clients), but perhaps consider transferring some shares in your company to your spouse to take advantage of their £5,000 allowance. Perhaps you should also be asking yourself “is it still worth using a company?”. The amount you can invest in equipment and gain tax relief in the year you buy it is now £200,000. Remembering vans and double cab pick-ups qualify as well as very low co2 rating cars. Business rates should either reduce or disappear for smaller business premises, which is very welcomed as we rent an office in Ivybridge. Auto enrolment was announced a few years ago now, but the next 18-24 months will see the smallest of businesses forced into the scheme, do you know your staging date? The budget covered many areas and if you want to chat about changes that possibly impact you, then please give us a call.

Are you Road Fit? On average, every third day a collision involving an older driver occurs on Devon’s 8,000 mile road network, with four-out-of-five of those incidents take place on a rural road. Devon has an ageing population and older drivers are over-represented in both national and local collision figures, especially considering the lower number of miles in general travelled by older drivers. Over the last 10 years the number of people injured in crashes has been going down, both nationally and locally, however collisions involving older drivers are showing a rise, particularly those involving serious injury or fatality. The two most common contributory factors in police reports are “loss of control” and “failed to look properly” which is the same for all ages of drivers. The sort of road safety intervention that would help reduce these collisions needs to address driver error, impairment and distraction factors. Then when we look at older drivers in isolation, the third most common factor was reported to be “illness or disability”, so a focus on this area is also important in reducing older driver collisions in future. With that in mind, Devon County Council has designed the Road Fit driver support scheme to help older drivers cope safely behind the wheel. CIt is aimed at any driver who has: • Experienced a loss of confidence in their

The scheme enables individuals to take a short assessed drive with one of our local professional driver trainers. Advice is given about the driving performance and a written report is given at the conclusion of the assessment. The drivers’ GP will be sent a copy of this report. This will help the driver and doctor decide the best course of action to take to reduce the chance of problems occurring when behind the wheel. To access the Road Fit scheme you can either be referred by your GP or other health professional, you can refer yourself, or you can refer a family member or friend. The Road Fit driver trainer does not have

any role regarding your driving licence. In the event that a driver is considered unsafe, this will be included in the report to the doctor, who has a duty to act on this information. The General Medical Council guidance emphasises that when they diagnose a patient’s condition, or provide treatment, doctors should keep the patient’s ability to drive safely at the forefront of their minds. However, if a patient does pose a risk of serious harm to the public by continuing to drive when they are not fit to do so, the doctor is advised by the GMC that they should contact the DVLA or DVA, even if they do not have the patient’s consent to do so. These steps should only be taken as a last resort, if efforts to encourage the patient to act responsibly fail. Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council cabinet member for highway management, said: “The key is for older drivers to remember that Road Fit is here to help them and it enables them to work with their doctor on this issue. Road Fit is about doing the responsible thing to help drivers cope safely behind the wheel.” There is a fee payable for the Road Fit driving assessment. î For more advice or information contact Devon Travel Academy on 01392 444773 email drivers@devon.gov.uk or visit www.max-driver. co.uk/courses/roadfit-assessment

It was a match of firsts for Ivybridge U15s when they took on Plymstock Oaks in the Devon Plate semi-final on 23rd March. It was their first run out for their new sponsors, Royal Air Force

careers, and their first experience playing under floodlights The hard-fought match, which drew an impressive number of supporters, saw Ivybridge triumph 45-24 to progress to the

HECTIC TIME FOR THE HARRIERS l athletics It has been a busy period for athletes of Erme Valley Harriers, who have been competing in races far and wide. There was a tremendous turnout at the very tough ‘Grizzly’, a demanding race over 20 miles of hills, beaches and bogs! Neil Holmes, who has a terrific record at the event, was first Harrier home in 14th place in a time of 2.37.08. Other good performers were Craig MacAlpine (2.55.31), Jean Baptiste Rouvelin (2.58.19), Russ Mogridge (3.00.10) and Emma Lake (3.02.02). At the Bath Half Marathon, Alison Thorn was 3rd fv40 in a time of 1.24.22, whilst Sharon Terry (1.53.28) also had a good run. Sarah Hirons continued her impressive recent form by winning the ladies’ title at the Granite Way 20 mile race in a time of 2 hours and 27 minutes. A few weeks earlier, she ran well in the 11 mile Bodmin to Padstow Great Cornish Run, completing the course

in 1 hour and 16 minutes and was 1st female home and 3rd overall. Richard Lander-Stow finished the Larner Tree off-road marathon in 4 hours and 17 minutes, coming home 70th out of 303 finishers. New member Michael Miners won the Tavy 5 in a time of 18.42. At the Mad March Hare 10K in Plymouth, three Harriers ran well, with Matthew Brown (38.42) first home, followed by Jaine Swift (43.20) and Adrian Woodhouse (45.37). Swift was also 2nd lady. In the Age UK 10K race at Exeter Mike Hansen was 31st overall and 1st mv55 in a time of 39.55. Bridgitte Worth (52.23) and Carol Hansen (52.28) both did well and achieved personal best times. At the Fast Friday 10K, Will Battershill was 3rd man and achieved a pb with a time of 32.17, whilst Alison McEwing was 1st lady in 40.19. Tony Doonan, aged 72, had a great run and achieved a pb with a time of 52.20. Wind and rain at the Cardiff Half Marathon made conditions very difficult, despite this Steve New-

combe (1.23.27) and Cleo Perry (1.24.25) and 1st fv40, did well. At the Yeovil Easter Bunny 10K Jaine Swift was the first Harrier home in a time of 42.56 and was 3rd fv45. Swift was closely followed by husband Simon (43.08). Jo Edwards was 4th fv45 in a time of 43.35. At the Guernsey Easter Runs, Dave Hawke, aged 71, ran the 5K in 26.25 and the 10K in 55.22. Andrew Perry had a good run at the Taunton Half Marathon with a time of 1.20.46, whilst Nick McMahon completed the course

in a time of 1.47.24. In the marathon, both Craig MacAlpine (3.18.24) and Mike Hoskin (3.19.26) did well. Harriers turned out in force in the midweek Exeter 5K series, with young Joe Perry having a great run and breaking 18 minutes (17.57) for the first time. Perry was also 1st U15. The ladies also did well, with Alison McEwing (18.24) 2nd lady, Cleo Perry (18.37) 1st fv40, Jaine Swift (20.11)1st fv45 and Jo Edwards (20.58) 2nd fv50. î ermevalleyharriers.co.uk
