Royal British Legion Ivybridge Branch chairman Dermot Roberts has completed a walk of the famous Two Moors Way to raise money for the branch to be represented at one of the key events to commemorate the end of the Great War. On 8th August, 2018, to mark the centenary of the end of WWI, over 5,000 RBL branch members and 2,500 standards will represent their local communities in Ypres when they march to the Menin Gate, representing an entire generation that served defending their country. Braving the recent miserable weather, Dermot walked the

165km from Lynton to Ivybridge over six days, averaging 27km per day. Thanks to Dermot’s efforts and the kindness of those who spon-
sored him, the necessary funds were raised to ensure Ivybridge Branch will be represented by the branch standard bearer and wreath layer.
GET LUCKY WITH THE LOTTO The SeaMoor Lotto is a new venture to to help local good causes raise money. Led by South Hams District Council and West Devon Borough Council, 60% of all money raised will go towards local good causes, 20% of ticket sales will be put towards prizes and 20% will go towards the running costs. The councils want to hear from any interested parties, such as community groups, charities, and good causes in the area so they can be invited to a launch event this month and find out how to sign up to become part of the SeaMoor Lotto. Cllr Keith Wingate, South Hams executive portfolio holder for business development, said: “Local authority-run lotteries are working very well for many other communities around the country. We are working with Gatherwell, the company who manage lottery initiatives nationwide and will provide the know-how. “Their mission is to help good causes raise money. With their support and guidance we are in safe hands and will be delivering a lottery service for our community and charity sector that will benefit everybody.” Tickets, costing £1 per draw,
will only be sold via the internet. When a player buys a ticket they will opt to support a specific good cause or contribute to the community fund, which will be administered by the council. The draw will take place every Saturday evening at 8pm and, as with other lotteries, the more numbers matched the bigger the prize. The two councils expect to launch the SeaMoor Lotto to the public in this summer. i To find out how charities, commu-
nity organisations and good causes can get involved, email lotto@ swdevon.gov.uk
IVYBRIDGE REMEMBERS AUDITIONS As part of a week-long series of events to mark the centenary of the end of the Great War, Ivybridge Community Arts is staging a specially-written play, The Armistice, on 18th, 19th and 20th October. The group is looking for six men and six women for the main speaking roles, and would love to have some ‘extras’, too. Auditions are taking place at The Watermark on Saturday 12th May, from 9am to 12pm. If you would like to find out more about the group’s other events – an indoor street party, a music hall evening, a documentary evening and an exhibition – email ivybridgecommunityarts@ gmail.com

TWO MOORS TO THE MENIN GATE
JOIN THE IVYBRIDGE BIG WALK A Big Walk is taking place this month as part of a campaign to “take the roads back from the motorists” and let them know that everyone shares the highways . Local transition town group PL:21 is organising a walk/ride on Tuesday, 29th May, from Ivybridge and surrounding areas to the Donkey Sanctuary at Filham Park, where participants will enjoy a picnic lunch. It is in support of the Sustrans’ Close Pass campaign, which is asking motorists to give at least 1.5m of space when overtaking cyclists. PL:21 also want to
highlight the rights of other road users such as pedestrians, wheelchair users, horse riders, dog walkers and pram pushers. Walkers are meeting at The Watermark, Ivybridge, at 11am to walk from there. They will be joined by some residents and staff who will be leaving from Dame Hannah Rogers and a group of cyclists riding from South Brent. Everyone is invited to join in, along with their children, dogs, friends and relations for a fun, short (ish) walk, jog or run from The Watermark to Filham.

RAINBOWS LOOKING FOR HELPERS Rainbow units in Ivybridge are appealing for adult helpers who can give up just one evening a week to make a real difference to local girls. Rainbows are the youngest members of Girlguiding, aged from five to seven. Girls get the opportunity to enjoy a wide range of exciting activities and experiences and learn new skills. The units take girls not just from Ivybridge but
also surrounding villages, so there is a chance to make new friends as well. The units meet for an hour on either Tuesday or Thursday evenings and adult helper duties include playing games with the girls and helping them with various crafts and other activities. Rainbows leader Sue Fricker said: “We have recently had a surge in the number of girls wanting to join the units and we really
need more volunteers so that we can offer more places. “Being an adult helper is a really rewarding experience and as it’s only one evening a week it isn’t too time consuming. “Any volunteer would need to be over 18-years-old and will need to undergo a DBS check but Girlguiding will arrange this.” i For more information call Sue

PLASTIC FREE CHAMPIONS Plastic Free Ivybridge was pleased to help The Watermark celebrate its 10th anniversary at the start of April. The event gave the group the chance to present some of the items that have been found in the River Erme during river cleans and the stories behind some of these finds, including a camera lost six years ago with photos still intact – now returned to the owner. PFI was especially keen to support The Watermark, as they have taken big steps and are truly plastic free champions in Ivybridge. The Watermark team has lead the way by replacing single-use plastic bottles with glass alternatives, swapped non-recyclable take-away coffee cups for compostable ones and replaced plastic straws with paper ones. Importantly for The Watermark, and other businesses, the costs

of making such a switch is minimal, yet the environmental impact is huge. Plastic Free Ivybridge wants to support as many businesses as possible, so any organisations looking for ideas/alternatives on how to make their work more sustainable should get in touch and
PFI can help find local suppliers. PFI’s top plastic free tip: replace single-use cling film with beeswax wraps – these are sustainable and can be used for a host of applications in the kitchen. i For more information contact
South Brent School Association (PTA) is bidding to bag a massive cash boost from the Tesco Bags of Help initiative. Tesco’s community funding scheme sees grants of £4,000, £2,000 and £1,000, raised from carrier bag sales in Tesco stores, awarded to local community projects. South Brent School Association (PTA) has been shortlisted for the current round of grants and now needs shoppers votes to get the top grant. The PTA wants to replace the school’s current sports equipment and storage so that the it can provide enhanced extra curricular provision at the school. Tesco shoppers can vote in store during May and June on who should receive the awards.
AIR QUALITY CONSULTATION Air quality on Western Road in Ivybridge fails to meet the national and international levels for Nitrogen Dioxide, and South Hams District Council wants to hear your views on improving air quality. The coucil is now exploring ways that it can improve air quality, with a focus on the district’s Air Quality Management Areas (AQMA), which includes Western Road, as part of its legal responsibility to produce an air quality action plan. The council has produced a Clean Air Strategy, which brings together all of the council’s proposed actions for managing air quality. After being scrutinised by the ‘executive’ at South Hams, it was agreed that there would be a public consultation before any decisions are taken about what course of action might be the best way forward. The eight-week consultation on the council’s Clean Air Strategy is now open and runs until 20th June. i To provide feedback, email air.quality@swdevon.gov.uk

BUSY MONTH It has been a busy time for members of Ivybridge Flower Club. The annual quiz was held at the rugby club, when 53 members and friends enjoyed an evening of friendly rivalry and banter. Quizmaster Lisa Setters kept everyone thinking with a good mix of general knowledge and music questions, and Liz Mills and her helpers served an excellent supper. The club also provided the refreshments at the Devon and Cornwall Area of NAFAS council meeting at Tavistock on 9th April, before the monthly meeting held that same evening when Pam Sparks, a long-standing member of the club, demonstrated. Pam’s topic, ‘Table Talk’, gave members many differing designs of arrangements suited to differing situations. Her choice of colours of the well-conditioned plant materials lifted the room. Club meetings are held at The Watermark on the second Monday of the month. The demonstrator at the meeting on 14th May will be florist Sally Edgecombe, whose title is “first of the summer”. Visitors are welcome £6. i Contact Hilary on 01752 892647 for more information about the club

n The Arts Society THE AZTECS The Aztecs and their Civilisation is the subject of speaker Chloe Sayer’s talk at the Art Society’s May meeting on Wednesday, 30th, and Thursday, 31st May, 2018. The Aztecs (known also as the Mexica) flourished in central Mexico between 1325 and 1521. Often described as warlike and bloodthirsty, The Aztecs’ creative achievements were breathtaking. Arts Society meetings are held in Kingsbridge Methodist Hall on Wednesday evenings at 7pm for 7.30pm, and again on Thursday mornings at 10am for 10.30pm. All are welcome on payment/donation of £8. Tea/coffee available. i For more information, visit theartssocietykingsbridge.org.uk
n Ivybridge Theatre Company SHOW SUCCESS Ivybridge Theatre Company’s latest production, Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland has just completed a successful run of four shows at The Watermark with audience numbers exceeding 350. The play stayed true to the original story, revealing all the weird and wonderful characters to Alice as she went on her journey through Wonderland. Most of the cast played multiple roles, with many frantic costume and makeup changes! All the actors were superb and immersed themselves into their diverse roles. They were complimented by the
colourful, fantastic costumes and skilful make-up. No sooner had the curtain closed, the music stopped and the props and costumes been packed away than preparations began for the company’s next production, Agatha Christie’s The Unexpected Guest, to be staged at The Watermark on 20-22 September. If you would like to audition – on 9th May at 7.30pm – please contact ITC. If you have any interest in performing arts or even helping back-stage Ivybridge Theatre Company would love to hear from you. i Contact Ron Davis on 01752

n Ivybridge Probus Club SPIN Unusually, the April meeting saw the annual handover of the club’s presidency. Outgoing president Mike Fletcher explained that for the first time since joining the club in 2005 he has to miss the annual spring ladies’ lunch due to a grand family re-union. In formally handing over the office to the incoming president Bob D’Silva, he expressed his thanks for the support of the club, continuing, “it has been an honour and privilege to be your president, not just once but twice”. In addition to a new president, this year saw a general reshuffle of the officer’s duties. Steve Woodcock is taking over from Bob Mailing as secretary, with Michael Greaves replacing Steve as treasurer. Howard Webster will continue as entertainment secretary and Michael Bailey as press secretary. After the chain of office was safely transferred to him, Bob D’Silva announced that his vice president for the year would be George Beable.

feature LOCAL GOVERNMENT IN IVYBRIDGE
Members of the Urban District Council inspect the new drains being laid along Western Road in 1904.
The urbanisation of Ivybridge during the 19th-century reflected changes that were happening throughout England. Starting in 1834 with the reform of the Poor Laws, the responsibilities of parish officers were progressively given over to Local Boards, comprised of public-minded local gentlemen. Each board was tasked with a particular aspect of local government and in areas not always restricted to the traditional parish boundaries. In Ivybridge, with the diminishing significance of the four parishes, an Ecclesiastical District of Ivybridge was formed in 1836. However, it was not until 1872 before a purely civil area could be formed, with the adoption of the Local Government Act and the establishment of the Ivybridge Local Board for public health. Consisting of 11 members, its responsibilities included providing a clean water supply, good sanitation, lighting and maintaining the cemetery. This new board took care to define its area of influence within the four parishes by placing carved stones at chosen points on the boundary, inscribed with
the large letters ‘ILB’. Many of these boundary stones still exist today where modern development has not encroached. In total, there are 10 boundary stone locations around Ivybridge. Another Local Government Act in 1894 permitted the Ivybridge Local Board to raise its status by becoming a full civil parish under the title ‘Ivybridge Urban District’ taking in land from Cornwood, Harford, Ermington and Ugborough, with a population of around 1,800.
T
he ancient tradition of ‘Beating the Bounds’, still performed in many towns and villages across Britain, is linked to boundary stones. It is a very old custom of walking around the parish boundary. It dates from a time when ecclesiastical parishes set different taxation rates, meaning it could be beneficial to know which parish you lived in! Participants would carry long sticks to hit the ground and the boundary stones along the way. i Details of the exact location of each of the boundary stones can be found on the Ivybridge Heritage & Archives Group website, along with many other topics of historical interest, at

NEW CINEMA FOR IVYBRIDGE
After months of fundraising, Ivybridge can now look forward to having a fully-fledged cinema. The Watermark has always shown films, but the impending upgrade will mean that the variety and frequency of films will increase. It will also be able to show films much quicker, within days or weeks of release, rather than months later as at present. This has been made possible thanks to the support of South Hams District Council through the Community Project Reinvestment Scheme and Ivybridge residents who generously supported a Crowdfunder campaign. Local family business Ivor Jones and Co Ltd also sponsored the project as well as the Crowdfunder. Cllr Roger Croad was able to support the project through Devon County Council’s ‘Invest in Devon’ Fund and district councillors Mike Saltern, Karen Pringle and Kathy Cuthbert added to the pot from their Sustainable Community
Locality Funds. There were also many other generous cash donations from the public and local groups including the Rotary Club, and the rest was funded by Ivybridge Town Council. The new cinema will be up and running later in the summer. The new set-up will allow those with hearing or sight problems to enjoy the films alongside the rest of the audience through a new assisted listening and audio description system. Jonathan Parsons, business manager for the town council, said: “We are really pleased to be bringing a much-requested facility to Ivybridge. Our research and the support from the community has cemented our belief that this will be a much-used service, particularly by younger people under 30, as our research showed nearly all would start using the cinema, or use it more, if we were able to show more recent blockbuster releases. “We are also pleased to be able to improve the accessibility of the system for all.”

MARINE BIOLOGY Five Year 5 children from Manor School spent the day at the Marine Biology Association in Plymouth. They learnt about how to classify different shells that might be found on our shores, and then they enjoyed a tour of the tanks and saw baby rays and cat fish. They also had the opportunity to look through microscopes at samples of sea water and were amazed to see close up how diverse the sea life was. Finally, the five had the chance to explore the libraries and gained a better understanding of how modern fishing is affecting the oceans. The children came away having had a great day, and having learnt an enormous amount about their local waters.

SPORTS Children at South Brent School competed against other schools from across Devon in many different activities during the spring term. For the first time, the South Brent year 5 and 6 Sportshall Athletics squad qualified for the county finals. The children had to compete in a range of sprint events, as well as throwing the javelin and shot put and jumping for height as well as distance. The children participated to the best of their ability, resulting in them achieving a top 10 finish out of every primary school in Devon. The school’s four gymnastic squads which had qualified for the partnership finals attended Somersaults Gym in Newton Abbot to display the floor routines and vaulting skills that they previously learned in school. The competition was again in-

credibly strong, but the children demonstrated their ability to compete against much larger schools by finishing in the top 10 in each of the competitions the four squads competed in.
The children are looking forward to a summer term filled with an array of different sports for all abilities, starting with the much-anticipated Devon Hockey County finals.
n Erme Primary School EGG-CELLENT More than 140 mini eggs were up for grabs at The Erme Primary School for its Easter festivities. Donated by Bidfood, they were used for an egg hunt in the school grounds. Pupils had to collect eggs as part of its Easter festivities, as well as solve educational challenges in teams to win an Easter prize.

MATHS CHAMPS Holbeton Primary School was delighted to be invited to compete in a Devon-wide contest for users of mathematical software ‘sumdog’, after early success in trialling the website and app. The contest rewarded the average amount of questions answered correctly over the course of a week. The school’s score of 534 points was well ahead of the 300 scored by the second placed school and clinched top prize, a six month’s access to all of the premium features of the software. Pupil Harry Godefroy finished fourth in the individual table, narrowly missing out on the podium. When signing up to software, the school wanted to improve fluency and speed when answering questions (especially times tables). The improvement has been rapid and the difference can already be seen in the children’s learning in school.

We use the highly-acclaimed Montessori Method to ensure we bring out the very best in every child. Our nurseries are small enough to enable us to deliver a personal and individual approach to your child’s development, but big enough to allow your child to engage with others and learn important social skills. Our nurseries have a variety of outdoor spaces and are in great locations, enabling us to take the children on walks, trips and visits.

n South Brent School ROMANS Year 3/4 children at South Brent School travelled back to Roman times for an amazing learning experience. They learnt about life as a Briton during the Roman invasion and they had the opportunity to examine genuine artefacts from that era and had the chance to try on some items of armour and clothing.
The Roman day ended with a battle. Year 3/4 were drilled by visitor Oly Martin in Roman military tactics, with the Year 5/6 children providing worthy opposition, but it was the Romans who prevailed! The two days gave the children a great insight into life during that period and lots of amazing learning experiences took place.
n Holbeton School BEACH CLEAN Several school and pre-school children from Holbeton Primary School took part in a successful beach clean on Mothecombe beach, organised by Jo Rogers from Surfers against Sewage. Although Mothecombe beach had no visible rubbish thanks to daily cleaning by Dave Howard for the Flete Estate, Jo demonstrated and explained the wide-

Unfortunately, millions of them were released accidentally, and are being consumed by fish. Jo has been invited into school to explain more, and enlist the help of the school’s Eco Warriors on their fortnightly Beach School.

CONTENTIOUS WILLS AND PROBATE Contentious Wills and probate lawyers get busier every year, with more and more people making a claim against an estate after someone has died. The most common claims are made by people under the Provision for Relatives and Dependents Inheritance Act 1975, which gives certain classes of people a right to an inheritance, or more correctly, the right to reasonable financial provision in a Will. Classes of people who can claim and usually be granted an award are: a spouse or civil partner, an ex-spouse or civil partner who has not remarried, a child of the deceased, someone who has been partly or wholly maintained by the deceased, a child of someone else who is treated as a child of the family, a couple who have co-habited for two years or more. There are no fixed rules as to how

They should look at the circumstances, such as the size of the estate, the financial circumstances of the person claiming an award, the circumstances of the beneficiaries who are also entitled to reasonable financial provision. One thing is certain, however,
CORNWOOD SPRING CLEAN
Around 50 volunteers of all ages turned out to spruce up their village on the annual ‘parish spring clean’ in Cornwood.
Organised by Nicholas Downing, a local of the village for around 35 years, things got off to a civilised start with tea and coffee and
and that is that these classes of people are most certainly entitled to reasonable financial provision in a Will. A person entitled may also claim that there was undue influence exerted on the person making the Will to leave them out, or that the person making the Will did not have the necessary testamentary (mental) capacity, or it may be that the Will is invalid because it was not signed correctly or not in the presence of two independent witnesses; witnesses must be over 18 years of age and must not be a beneficiary or married to a beneficiary, as this would lose them their inheritance. The best way to avoid this is to have the Will signing overseen by a solicitor or Will writer. It can also be claimed that the testator (the person making the Will) did not have the requisite
knowledge or did not approve the Will. Interestingly, if you put your home or other assets, such as cash savings, into a Home Protection or Asset Protection Trust the assets in trust are safe from all unforeseen eventualities and cannot be challenged under the 1975 Inheritance Act. Other benefits also apply to property in trust, for instance no probate is needed for property fully in trust which means no probate fees for the trustees to find and no delay in dealing with the assets after death as they can be dealt with straight away without an excessive wait for probate. a briefing, before the volunteers got straight out there to spruce up their village. In just two-and-a-half hours the group accumulated around 70 bags of litter and miscellaneous items, from bits of vehicles and car hubs, bicycle wheels and bits of kids bikes, to a toilet cistern and an adult DVD! To add a bit of fun to the task, there were first and second prizes for the adults and kids for the most unusual item found. The winning items, as voted for by the team, were; Adults 1st prize was for the naughty DVD; Adults
second prize, the toilet cistern; Kids 1st prize was for a Christmas decoration, small hazard sign and a bike light; And kids 2nd prize to a toilet bowl. The spring clean would not have been possible without support from the parish council, Elaine Budd and the team from WOLF minerals, SHDC for equipment and support, Preston of the ‘coffee stop’ for his hospitality and support and Mr Dollard for his lending of a quad and trailer. But most importantly, ‘thank you’ to the amazing volunteers for doing such an epic job.

LANDLORDS BEWARE NEW TAX YEAR Landlords beware – new requirements for minimum EPC ratings came into force on 1st April. In England and Wales, properties must have a minimum EPC rating of E before a landlord can grant a new tenancy to new or existing tenants. This requirement will then come into force to all private rented properties, even where there hasn’t been a change in tenancy, from 1st April, 2020, for domestic properties and 2023 for non-domestic properties. Local authorities can impose a financial penalty of up to £5,000 for non-compliance in respect of domestic properties. Visit www.gov.uk/government/ publications/the-private-rented-property-minimum-standardlandlord-guidance-documents for guidance on the following: • How to determine if your property is affected by the regulations • Steps you can take to ensure
your property complies • How you can identify appropriate energy efficiency improvements for your property • If you are eligible for no-cost funding to cover the cost of required energy efficiency improvements (domestic properties only) • Exemptions and exclusions and how to register if applicable • Enforcement, including information on fines and other penalties • The appeal process. Separate regulations, effective from 1st April, 2016, allow tenants of privately rented domestic properties to request consent to install energy efficiency improvements in the property they rent which a landlord cannot unreasonably refuse. Go to www. gov.uk/government/publications/ tenants-energy-efficiency-improvements-provisions-guidancefor-domestic-landlords-and-tenants for further information.

COMMUNITY RANGERS
MAY ON DARTMOOR May tends to be a busy time on the moor, with two bank holiday weekends, half term and Ten Tors. Youngsters from across the region have been training, in all weather, since the beginning of the year to tackle either the 35-, 45- or 55-mile routes. Organised and monitored by the military, this year’s event is on 12th/13th May. We have been busy over the last month with a variety of activities, including GPS mapping all of the swaling and also the unplanned fires. This information is held on a database that we have been adding to over the years, and the information is shared with
Natural England, who are able to cross-check what was planned and what was actually swaled. We have also been around to local visitor information points dropping off the latest free Enjoy Dartmoor magazine, which can be found at The Watermark in Ivybridge if you would like a copy. DNPA has launched its new ‘Love Moor Life – The Rangers’ Code’ campaign, which focusses on six key points to remember while enjoying the moors: • Keep your dog on a lead • Close gates • Camping: Use a campsite or check the website
THE WOMBLES OF LEE MILL ARE THEY Noticing more and more litter appearing on the streets, pavements and verges of her village spurred a long-term resident to daunting task of picking up action and do something about it. litter in Lee Mill, and soon local Wendy Jamieson started the residents noticed what she was Bill Lomas - Dec16_Layout 1 17-Nov-16 8:04 PM Page 1
Ranger Andrea Roberts encourages people to follow the new ‘Love Moor Life’ code when on the moor • Bag up litter and take home • Share roads and bridleways • Don’t feed the ponies The campaign will highlight a different behaviour depending on the season and will start with a focus on the dog message to coincide with lambing and ground nesting birds (see page 10). The ground nesting bird season runs from March through to July and in order to help rare bird species such as the snipe and lapwing, it’s important to keep your dog under close control and not let it run through the grasses and heather where the nests may be disturbed.
Litter is a problem highlighted in the new campaign. The ranger team has been running volunteering events under the #2 minute litter pick campaign for the past couple of years, encouraging people to get involved and help, for just two minutes, in keeping Dartmoor free of litter. Get involved at one of these events: May 7th – Dartmeet car park – 10:30am-12:30pm. May 19th – Roborough Rock, Yelverton 10:30am-12:30pm. May 20th – Cadover Bridge 10:30am-12:30pm. No need to book, all equipment provided.
doing and dubbed her “Wendy the Womble”. Other villagers said they’d like to get involved, and now there is a fine little posse of Wombles in Lee Mill. With support from Lee Mill Community Association, which brought the group’s litter-pickers and bag-hoops, and Tesco, the
volunteers will now meet once a month. There isn’t a set date or time, but it will be on Sundays and is weather dependent If anyone in Lee Mill wants to get involved, they can contact Wendy at wendywolf@hotmail.co.uk i See Lee Mill Community Facebook

SPACE, NOT QUITE THE FINAL FRONTIER
There’s a quote that we love and use quite a lot at The Clay Factory. It’s by the American astrophysicist and author Neal deGrasse Tyson and it goes something like: “I think of space 37_TIM_Dec16_The_Ivybridge_magazine 18-Nov-16 6:07 PM Page 37 not as the final frontier but as the next frontier. Not as something to be conquered, but to be explored.” /

We have always had quite a lot of space here at The Clay Factory. The nature of space can be daunting and overwhelming, whether you are contemplating the space you look at on a clear, starry night or a vast physical space – both are brimming with potential wonder and myriad possibilities. The space here at The Clay Factory is not something we wish to conquer. Rather, as those who have been with us from the very beginning will know, our exploration of the building and its use has changed as new people have joined our community. This exploration has seen us build art studios, funky new workspaces, host art exhibitions, facilitate popup cinema screenings and open up a plant-based food business. It would be easy to think that our exploration was complete, but, as we amble into summertime we are once again actively seeking to engage with new individuals,

A young Ivybridge woman is looking forward to competing at the World Underwater Hockey Championships in Quebec, Canada, this July after being selected for the Great Britain elite ladies team. Alyssa Oates, 20, fought off strong competition to make the final squad of 12. It will be Alyssa’s fifth world championships and she is really excited about representing her country again. “It’s not been easy, trying to fit in my training alongside my studies and attending monthly weekend training camps in Sheffield, however, it all seems worth it now I’ve made the team,” commented Alyssa after hearing of her selection. Alyssa, a member of Plymouth Underwater Hockey Club, which trains at the Plymouth Life Centre, is currently studying to be a PE teacher at Plymouth Marjon University where she has earned an elite scholarship in recognition of her national and international playing standard. Team GB coach Tim Dale said: “Alyssa is a fantastic athlete who plays with a cool head
under pressure. I’m delighted to have selected her for the elite squad where she’ll bring real dynamism to our game. All her dedicated training has paid off.” Underwater hockey is seen as a minority sport in Britain, which means the players have to self-finance all their training and competing costs. Great Britain’s Elite Ladies Team is trying to raise £25,000 towards the costs of competing at the 2018 World Championships and would welcome any support via their crowdfunding page – www.crowdfunder. co.uk/gbladieseliteunderwaterhockey

VET RECORDS TUMBLE AT TAUNTON Athletes of Erme Valley Harriers enjoyed a very successful day at Taunton, with four vet records being broken. The Harriers had athletes in the marathon and the half marathon, cheered on by supporters who travelled up with the athletes on a coach organised by the club. In the marathon, Ken Summers (4.03.38) was 2nd mv65 and created a new male vet 65 club record, while Carol Hansen (4.45.36) set a new female vet 55 club record. Suzie Spooner (3.56.47) and Kevin Paull (3.56.47) also completed the marathon. There were many fine performances in the half marathon, too, with Cleo Perry (1.29.05) 1st female vet, David Engledew 2nd male vet 50 and Alison Engledew (1.40.12) 1st female vet 55. Perry set a new female vet 45 club record, while Engledew set a new female vet 55 club record. Patrick Wakeley (1.38.28), Donncha Scollard (1.47.23), Allister Bristow (1.48.17) and Liz Bowden (1.48.17) all ran well. Perry had previously run well at the Granite 10, where she was first lady in 69.09 and set a new club female vet 45 record. Sarah Hirons was third lady in 73.06. Both Perry and Hirons were first in their age groups. Alison McEwing completed the longer 20 mile race and was first lady and eigth overall in 2.16.08. The weather conditions were horrendous for the very tough ‘off road’ Grizzly at Seaton and due to the snow the race was cut from the usual 21 miles to around 11 miles. The Harri-
Alison Engledew (left) and Cleo Perry at the Taunton half marathon
ers had a good turnout with Ewan Lake, Patrick Wakeley, Suzi Spooner, David Church, Kevin Paull, Steve Watson, Ken Summers, Liz Bowden and Allister Bristow completing the much shorter version of the race. Meanwhile, in the Good Friday 10K in Exeter Nick Bristow was 41st in 41.55. The Harriers popular 10K on Saturday, 12th May, is now full with the race limit of 825 being reached a month before the race. The race starts at 6.30pm at the station car park and finishes at Ivybridge Rugby Club. i For more information about the Harriers visit
