The first Build A Story is on Saturday, 22 November, from 10am and will last approximately an hour, with a small charge of £1.50. A maximum of 10 children can be accommodated per session so those interested are asked to book in with library staff.

Ivybridge will sparkle this Christmas A new display of festive lights will illuminate Ivybridge this Christmas. The new lighting, costing nearly £6,500, will be switched on during the town’s Christmas Festival on 28 and 29 November. The festive fun commences on the evening of Friday 28th with exciting attractions for all ages and many of the shops open late for the event. Visitors will be able to enjoy the festive atmosphere while picking up some Christmas gifts from the shops. advent markets and Christmas stalls, with plenty of entertainment, refreshments and music on offer. There will be a special parade featuring guests from the South Devon carnival circuit, Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue fire engine and cadets, Heroes ‘n’ Villains in their amazing movie costumes, followed by the star attraction – Santa accompanied by his crew of elves arriving on

Santa will return to Ivybridge the following day when the Festival resumes from 10am, running into the afternoon, when families can visit Santa and his elves in his magical grotto in the Atrium on the 1st floor of The Watermark, and take part in other activities organised by the Guides. Saturday shoppers can delight in the vibrant advent markets around the town, and enjoy other festivities taking place including the Flower Club’s wreath making workshop in The Watermark (9.30am-noon – see page 19), and there will be a display of vintage cars outside The Watermark courtesy of Devon Vintage Car Club. See our December issue for full details of the Ivybridge Christmas Festival.

November is of course the month of Remembrance. The Royal British Legion Ivybridge branch can be justly proud of the Remembrance Day Parade & Service conducted in the town. An audience, in the thousands, of people young and old come to pay their respects to those who have fallen in service to their country. I am delighted that The Ivybridge magazine can support this occasion in a small way by publishing the timetable and order of service, which you’ll find on page 9. In his series Ivybridge during the Great War, Tony Rea looks at how the poppy came to be our symbol of Remembrance (also on page 9). It may only just be November, but no matter how hard we try, we cannot escape the ‘C’ word! Yes, Christmas is galloping towards us; my daughter already has a present list so long that Santa would need two sleighs to deliver them! As the article on the left reports, Ivybridge will sparkle this Christmas thanks to a new set of Christmas lights for Fore Street. These will be turned on during the Christmas Festival, which this year is on 28 & 29 November. A whole host of festive family fun is planned, and we will have a full pull-out-and-keep programme in our December issue. Before this, though, there is loads going on in and around the town this month. Our packed What’s On section has details of events, clubs, groups, shows, music, films and more, all good reasons to get out and about. I hope you enjoy this issue.

COFFEE MORNING SUCCESS A coffee morning for Ivybridge and South Brent Arthritis Research UK held in South Brent Old School Centre, South Brent, in October made £532, plus £200 was raised through the sale of Christmas cards. The group wish to thank all concerned in putting the event on and to everyone who supported it. The group’s committee is looking to enlist some new faces as a number of officers will be retiring from office in the coming year. The Santa’s Grotto at this year’s Erme Primary School Christmas Extravaganza could be a drab place unless local people and businesses can help with new decorations. The current decorations for the Grotto, the biggest attraction of the Christmas event, which this year is on Saturday, 13 December, are beyond repair and the Friends of the Erme Primary are seeking help to get new ones. REMEMBRANCE DAY SERVICE Local people of all ages are being invited by The Royal British Legion Ivybridge Branch to join them for their Remembrance Day Parade and Service on Sunday, 9 November - see page 9 for full details of the parade and service. Following the parade, they also invite everyone to join RBL members, veterans and the Plymouth Pipe Band in The Sportsman’s Inn for a small buffet and a great raffle and auction in aid of the Poppy Appeal. Last year’s Poppy Appeal in Ivybridge raised in excess of £22,000. The RBL is very grateful for the generosity and support of the town; very many local serving and ex-servicemen/women and their dependents received help.

Former MP and author Ann Widdecombe was the guest of honour at the recent Hannahs Ivybridge Supporter Group Autumn Fundraising Lunch at the Moorland Garden Hotel. After lunch, over 130 guests were entertained by Ann with stories rang-

ing from her days in Westminster to her experience on Strictly Come Dancing. The talk was followed by both serious and frivolous questions from guests. The lunch raised over £1,500 to support the work Hannahs does with children and adults with disabilities.

THE BALLOONS HAVE GONE UP

‘Stage One’ of an exciting geography project has been ‘released’ by the children of The Erme Primary School. The pupils created postcards describing to another person what their favourite toy looks like, which were then attached to fully biodegradable balloons. These were then releases to see how far they would travel. The children are looking forward to receiving information on how far the balloons have travelled, which will be plotted on a map to help them learn more about the landscape, wind direction and measuring distances.

Year 4 pupils at Stowford School enjoyed a mouth-watering end to their topic based on water. Jim Portus and Karen Pringle, from South Western Fish Producer Organisation Ltd (SWFPO Ltd), brought in the “taste of the sea” for the children to sample. SWFPO Ltd, which serves the needs fishing communities from Brixham to the South West coast of Scotland, is based in Ivybridge and Mr Portus and Mrs Pringle were only too happy to help out with a cooking project to encourage the children to try fresh fish. They brought along some fresh lemon sole fillets supplied by Ivybridge Fish Company and plenty of egg, flour and bread crumbs to give the children the opportunity to make their own ‘fish fingers’. They also brought along some prawns, as well as some frozen fish fingers so that the children could compare the taste. Jim explained the benefits of including fish in your diet and showed them a lemon sole fish so that they understood where their fillets came from. Then the children got busy making homemade fish fingers.

Children at Manor Primary have been enjoying a range of exciting outdoor experiences. Year 6 spent a fantastic week at Heatree Activity Centre on Dartmoor, the Year 5s had a day of bushcraft at Spirit of Adventure, and the Year 4s were sent ‘back to basics’ with a two-day residential trip to Embercombe, near Exeter. There have also been numerous wellie walks and rambles around Ivybridge and a Year 3/ 4 evening picnic at Mothecombe beach... all valuable learning experiences which have given the children some wonderful memories! 6

SOCCER SUCCESS FOR MANOR The keen footballers at Manor Primary have made a great start to the season by finishing in joint first place at the Ivybridge Learning Community Festival. A brilliant team display saw the team share top spot with Stowford. The Girls' football team (right) went one better when they won the ILC School Games Festival outright by three clear points.

Pupils at Stowford School went on a cultural ‘visit’ to France to celebrate European Language Day. All the children, from Foundation to Year 6, had the chance to try a French breakfast of croissants, brioche and hot chocolate at the various “temporary cafes” that sprang up around the school. Pupils had prepared Frenchthemed bunting, headbands and table cloths prior to the event to help create to right atmosphere. In the afternoon, the Key Stage 2 classes had the added bonus of visits from language students at ICC to give them an extra opportunity to practise their oral skills.

s November sees the first Remembrance Day to fall within the centennial of the Great War, it seems appropriate to write about the poppy. To be clear, in 1914 the only poppies in Ivybridge were those growing wild in the fields around the village, and these held no particular significance. Poppies captured the popular imagination after the war. The Royal British Legion was formed in May 1921 and, according to its website, the firstever Poppy Appeal was held later that year with the first Poppy Day on 11 November. Why is the poppy our symbol of Remembrance? It has been suggested that poppies were the only plant to flourish in the wardamaged fields between the WWI trenches, and that the red colour was appropriate as it represented bloodshed. However, whilst there is little doubt that poppies flowered in Flanders and the Somme, the countryside was not universally devastated by war. Additionally, the poppy has a very short flowering period. I am arguing, therefore, that for most of the time the war zone of the Western Front would have been devoid of red poppies.

Much of the mythology surrounding the poppy probably comes from the poem In Flanders Fields, written by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a field surgeon in the Royal Canadian Artillery. He is thought to have written the poem in slack periods between managing the treatment of the injured at a field hospital in Flanders during the second battle of Ypres (1915). McCrae’s verse is a call to arms and it was much used for propaganda purposes in Britain, the Commonwealth and the USA. Perhaps that image of red poppies dancing in the wind between rows of crosses simply struck a chord with the public. Since I started writing these monthly pieces, I have received much support from local people who have shared details of family members who volunteered, fought, died and survived. I have listened enthralled to stories retold. For example, of the airship that crash-landed on Dartmoor close to Ivybridge, of Guardsman Barter – the tallest soldier in the British army – and of the Indian troops billeted near Modbury along with their elephants! A Crafters’ Christmas Christmas will be the theme for the Ivybridge Crafters at their November and December session. The weekly Friday morning sessions will focus on gifts for Christmas along with making decorations, calenders and cards. The Crafters offer weekly themed crafty coffee mornings at the Endsleigh Terrace Cafe between 10am and noon. It is just £5 per workshop, which includes all materials. Probus meet the Landed Gentry! Chat at the bar at October’s Ivybridge Probus Club meeting, held at the regular Smithaleigh Hotel venue, centred around the visit to Mothecombe House and the postponed Golf Day. The Mothecombe visit was private and by appointment with Mrs Mildmay-White, who conducted the visit to this beautiful and historic house. Sitting on the Flete estate since

the 18th Century, the house has many precious paintings and pieces of art. Sir Edwin Lutyens left his mark on the house during the 20th Century. The 20 members of the party were all in agreement as to the house’s style and beautiful grounds. After this recent beautiful autumn weather, the golf day was unfortunately fogged out. So poor was the visibility that one could not see across the car park. A new date will be fixed in early November.

President Howard Webster handed out tickets to the club members signed-up for the Devonport Theatre visit to see Chorus Line. The Club’s Ladies’ Christmas lunch, arranged by Peter Corke, will, by popular demand, be at St Elizabeth’s House. After four years organising club events Peter would like to hand over to another member and President Howard thanked Peter on behalf of members. Peter did confirm he is hoping to finalise the visit to Plymouth Magistrates Court later this month. Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council A MESSAGE FROM THE DISTRICT’S DOG WARDEN

Dear Dog Owners – The mornings and evenings are now darker, which means that we all need to be extra vigilant when we are exercising our pets. Please ensure that you are properly prepared for a stress free walk by having a torch so that you can see where you dog has fouled, and plenty of poo bags so that you can clear it away and dispose of it as required by law (SHDC Dog Control Orders 2013). Please remember that dogs have their own welfare needs and should be walked for a minimum of 20 minutes, twice a day. This is their time, and should be used to engage with the dog. I frequently see people walking their dogs but not taking any notice of them – frequently on the phone or chatting away to their friends. This is not fair on the dog, and it can also lead to the owner being unaware that the dog has fouled. Many dogs are on their own for several hours during the day, so please do try to make your time with him count, by giving him/her your full attention – this will ensure that you have a happy and contented pet and best friend! My attention has recently been drawn to an article in a National Farmers’ Union magazine concerning the fact that faeces are often left on public footpaths which cross agricultural land, and the effects that this has on livestock: Neosporosis can cause abortions in cattle and is thought to be responsible for the highest percentage of all cattle abortions reported in the UK. Neospora eggs are produced by infected dogs and excreted in their faeces. Cattle will then become infected if they eat food, ie: grass, or drink water contaminated with the eggs. Sarcocystosis is also caused by parasites, which can use dogs as intermediate hosts, and similarly the eggs are produced and excreted in faeces. Sheep will become infected if they eat food or drink contaminated by the eggs. In terms of both these diseases, faeces from infected dogs can contaminate pasture and animal feed, water or bedding. There is currently no licensed vaccine or drugs available for these diseases. Please, therefore, consider your surroundings more carefully and reduce the impact of dog faeces on people, livestock, and land. There is no excuse for any dog fouling anywhere in SHDC towns, villages or the surrounding fields. If you use a footpath which crosses farmland, please ensure that you bag your dog’s faeces, and take it home with you. And finally... Having just moved house, with all the bending and moving boxes that entails, I have become aware of occasional twinges in my back – even physios feel pain! Back pain causes 180 million working days to be lost a year, and costs health and social services an estimated £1.6 billion. Physiotherapists spend much time assisting people with persistent LBP. Back pain is a ‘musculoskeletal disorder’ (MSD). MSDs are a main cause of people being off sick from work. Physiotherapy is extremely effective with MSDs. In one study, 80% of people who had physiotherapy for their MSD were able to carry on working and did not have to go off sick. Back pain has a wide variety of causes, such as picking up heavy objects incorrectly, spending too long in one position, or degenerative changes. It is a sad fact that performing arts is declining in England’s schools just as countries around the world are embracing it. A recent report by the Department for Education stated that drama and performing arts had been dropped in nearly a quarter of schools. Performing arts are widely spoken about as being one of the most positive influences on a child’s life. In her publication, The Importance of Theatre and Performance to the Development of the Child, Professor Maggie Kinloch argued that the theatre provides a host of benefits for children, and not only for those that want to go on and make a career on the stage. Performing arts stimulates all children’s creativity, helping them make sense of their emotions, develop their ability to understand, challenge their preconceptions, develop language and communication skills, and introduces new ideas to them and allows them to express opinions. Ideally, performing arts should be accessible to all children in state schools, but the reality is that this is often not the case. This is where affordable, part-time theatre and dance schools really come into their own.

For boys, who especially struggle with literacy, an action research project by the Lancashire Literacy team, which focused on improving boy’s writing through visual literacy and drama, found that “stimulus from drama and visual approaches has also resulted in a greater control of voice, style and pace, and a positive attitude to writing for specific purposes”. Siblings facing separation if families can’t be found NATIONAL ADOPTION WEEK 3-9 November

A local adoption charity is appealing for potential adopters who would consider adopting a sibling group to come forward. Families for Children has warned that if adoptive families cannot be found soon, then it is likely that these brothers and sisters will be separated. The plea comes after national figures suggest that just under half of all children waiting for adoptive families are sibling groups – brothers and/or sisters who need to be placed together. Caroline Davies OBE, and

CEO of the charity, says: “Most of the sibling groups waiting for adoption are two children who want to stay together. Research indicates that it is often in the best interests of the children that they do stay together as separation could result in further traumatic experiences and anxiety for them. “Adopting a sibling group may be a daunting prospect, and while there will be challenges, the benefits and rewards for both parents and children are huge.” Ahead of National Adoption Week this month, the charity is launching its “Children who play together should stay together” campaign and have set up a

unique project, Family for Me, specifically to find families for sibling groups. The project currently has seven sets of sibling groups, of varying ages and gender, to find families across the county. FFC provide adopters with lifetime support for their families should they need it, ranging from practical advice on everyday parenting to therapeutic counselling and birth family tracing. RANGERS Autumn is here

Summer has proved a very busy time for myself and the other rangers in the team, writes Andrea Roberts With the warm summer weather following on from a wet spring, the vegetation grew wild along the footpaths and bridleways of Dartmoor. Clearing the paths of vegetation to allow access is the responsibility of the landowner, but historically the national park has always cleared the paths. With over 500 miles of paths to check, maintain and clear this can be a very time-consuming job over the summer months, but an instantly satisfying one when done! By now the eroded path under the Viaduct will finally be repaired after several months of waiting. Unfortunately, when contractors are involved these types of jobs can become lengthy, due to our policies and procedures and the availability / workload of the chosen contractor. This is the second time in the past three years that this work has had to be carried out at this location and I’m hoping the last time for a while! At the end of October work is also scheduled along the Kings Leat Guttor Path which sits higher above, and runs parallel to, the River Erme. This path has always been flooded in areas due to the nature of the path sitting in the line of an old leat. Some of my colleagues in the Conservation Works Team are planning to come and take down a section of the wall/bank, create a “Buddle” hole for drainage and then rebuild the wall above it. This will by no means entirely resolve the issues along this path, but it’s a good start to try and reduce the sitting water and mud, which is synonymous with this path. For the next couple of months I will be continuing to catch up on any late strimming and start undertaking some erosion surveys on the moor, something that is done annually to try and give a clearer picture about the state of the moor and the causes of erosion, be it walkers, cattle, water, quad bikes or ponies.

THERE HAVE been many outstanding performances by athletes of Erme Valley Harriers in recent weeks, but for the team of Alison McEwing, Alison Thorn and Cleo Andrews to finish third ladies team in the British Half Marathon Championships at Cardiff is exceptional. Alison McEwing (1.22.25), Alison Thorn (1.24.15), Paddy Trinder (1.24.35) and Cleo Andrews (1.26.45) all got under the 1.30 barrier in this prestigious event, which attracted an entry of over 21,000 athletes. Thorn was also 3rd fv40. The Harriers also had a successful time at the Bridgwater Half Marathon, where McEwing was 1st lady and Thorn 1st fv40. Thorn was also in great form at the Taunton 10k as she was 18th overall, 2nd lady and 1st fv40 in a time of 38.28. The Harriers have some of the best ladies in the South West and at the Newton Abbot Ladies 10K Cleo Andrews was 5th (41.46) and Emma Lake 8th (43.05). Andrews was 2nd fv40, whilst Lake was 3rd fv35. The Harriers men have also enjoyed some success, with Tom Packer 3rd at the Hanger Up ‘n’ Down race. Simon Swift was 2nd mv45 and Neil Moffatt 3rd mv45. The Cross Country season got underway in good dry conditions at Central Park in Plymouth. The Harriers juniors did particularly well, with Olivia Travers 1st U11 Girl, Ben Scott 2nd U11 Boy and Molly Northmore 2nd U13 Girl. Owen Parkin had a fine run as he was 3rd U17 Man.
