‘HIDDEN GEM’ TO AWAKEN A ‘hidden gem’ lying on the edge of Dartmoor, nestled in the atmospheric landscape that surrounds it, is set to embark on a new lease of life The landowner of Redlake, whose chimney is visible from miles around, and local charity The Eddystone Trust are working together to give it a use that will put it firmly at the heart of the community. They are creating a community hub called The Clay Factory, which will offer exciting and flexible spaces available to rent by local businesses and charities alongside creative studios and airy open plan rooms where exhibitions, training and community events will be held. To launch The Clay Factory, The Eddystone Trust is holding a weekend of events in December. On Saturday, 12th December, there will be a pop-up art gallery featuring local artists, music, historical information, presentations, mulled wine and nibbles.

A HAPPY BIRTHDAY Ann Widdecombe was the special guest at the Septembers meeting of the University of the Third Age (U3A) in Ivybridge as the group celebrated its fifth birthday. The Watermark was packed to hear Ann’s talk on her “life and times”. With her well known sense of humour and direct talking the audience was taken from the often hilarious times she spent on “Strictly” and in Pantomime to a look back on her early careers and her time as an MP. Ivybridge U3A branch boosts over 350 members with 30 different interest groups. Open to anyone retired or no longer in full time employment, the U3A offers opportunities to enjoy monthly meetings and join the many activity groups, which include walking, industrial archaeology, natural history, local history, Tai Chi, watercolour painting, needlecraft, card games, bridge and etymology, to name but a few. The Ivybridge U3A choir, which has so far performed five concerts raising £5,650 for charity, is busy rehearsing for Christmas concerts on the 1st and 2nd of December in aid of Children’s Hospice South West (see page 16). PROBUS IN PARIS Eighteen members of Ivybridge Probus Club and their wives enjoyed a weekend visit to Paris in September. Staying at the Hotel de St. Germain on the Left Bank, the group were treated to ‘magnifique’ service from the French hosts as they embarked are a whirlwind tour of the French capital. The first evening was an excellent dinner of perfect French cuisine at Millesimes in Montparnesse. The next day was a busy day of sightseeing and shopping. Saturday evening was jazz night at Chez Papa – tres fantastique! A club with a cellar atmosphere, a very talented jazz trio and an equally talented chef. With the shops shut on the Sunday, the open top hop-on-hop-off bus tours proved a popular way of seeing the sights in the beautiful autumn weather. The day was finished off with an evening dinner cruise on the River Seine, the highlight of which was stopping to see the spectacularly illuminated Eiffel Tower. The children at Manor Primary enjoyed an incredible experience at Heatree House for their residential visit. They took part in many outdoor and adventurous activities, working brilliantly together as a team throughout the week. The children learnt how to build rafts and then had the opportunity to test them on the water. Stream scrambling was a really popular activity, as was the mountain biking and both resulted in very happy but muddy children. The climbing and abseil tower was a real challenge for some children, but they all had the chance to really push their own boundaries and achieve personal goals.

REPORTS

We hope you enjoyed seeing the delightful photos of the children who started school for the first time this September in our October issue. A big “thank you” to the schools for organising the photos and sending them to us.

Year 4 children of Manor Primary stayed for two days at Embercombe, the sustainable farm and education centre on the edge of Haldon Forest. As well as making the very food that they ate, the children enjoyed creating a huge dragon from pumpkins and squashes, shared songs and stories around the campfire and braved a late night walk through the dark of the forest. An exciting highlight of the children’s adventure was bedtime, as they slept in small yurts in an apple orchard!

Year 4 pupils at Stowford School had the chance to create and cook their own “fish fingers” from fresh fish as part of their topic ‘Just Add H2O’. As part of their science work, they have been investigating how different materials react when they are heated or cooled. Their challenge in technology was to understand the principles of a healthy and varied diet and to prepare and cook some savoury dishes. They made their healthy “fish fingers” from scratch, using a variety of fish, eggs and bread-

crumbs and, once they were cooked, the children had the opportunity to taste them and compare the taste with some shop bought fish fingers they had also cooked. Curlews’ teacher, Abi Hurdle, said: “The children were amazed at how easy it was to create homemade fish fingers. It was a lovely, practical way to investigate some of the irreversible changes that happen during cooking and I am sure that lots of the children will be keen to try out their newfound cooking skills at home.”

Woodlands Park Primary School celebrated Harvest Festival with a whole school assembly. This year the school prepared hampers containing packet and tinned items for the Shekinah Mission in Plymouth. Helen Pearce, a representative from the Mission, came along to the assembly and told

everyone of the important work they do. The centre receives around 50 adults a day and is often the first point of contact for many people and provides many helpful services which include hot meals for disadvantaged adults. The school hopes that its contributions will help support their great work.

RANGERS www.turkeysfromdevon.co.uk

Lots of people are still visiting the moor, says DNPA Ranger Andrea Roberts

Autumn is definitely here and the moors are looking stunning at the moment. The “Indian summer” experienced in October is certainly encouraging lots of people to continue to visit and enjoy the moor, which is great to see.

Moor looking stunning

October was the official start of the swaling season on Dartmoor, where farmers, commoners and landowners will burn areas of moorland to encourage new fresh vegetation to come through. This is done in conjunction with DEFRA and is carefully managed and organised as per the Heather and Grass (Burning) Regulations 1986. Don’t panic if you see an area of moorland on fire, but, as always, if you are in doubt phone Dartmoor National Park on 01626 832093 or the Fire Service on 999. Next volunteer day We had another very successful volunteer day clearing vegetation at the Glasscombe Corner stone rows (South Brent). The next date when you can help us look after the moor is on Sunday, 6th December. These days are proving very popular as it’s an ideal opportunity to come and enjoy the stunning scenery, learn about the fascinating history and to “do your bit” and help to conserve this unique site. For further information or to book please contact myself on 07720 509270 or Ella Briens on 07711 104546. For more information about other volunteering opportunities across the moor, visit the National Park website – www.dartmoor.gov.uk Are you winter ready? Now the days are shorter, colder and wetter, it is time to check and repack your rucksacks. Take out the suncream and replace with a woolly hat, gloves, torch etc. It’s also important to let somebody know where you are going and what time you are expected back. Many, many times over the years members of the ranger team have received phone calls at dusk from lost people, caught out by the dying light and the sudden change in weather conditions. As beautiful as Dartmoor is, it can still catch you out unexpectedly, even if you are local and familiar with the moors.

If you are interested in finding out more about the Ranger service first hand, or think you may need their help please, contact them on: Ella – 07711104546 / ebriens@dartmoor.gov.uk Andrea – 07720509270 / aroberts@dartmoor.gov.uk 22

he photograph shows the Manley’s tailoring shop on Fore Street. Tom and Mary Manley’s only son, Arthur, served with the Royal Engineers. Arthur had worked in Stowford Mill before the war and was engaged to a Miss Hill. Arthur was reported missing in February 1917 and confirmed dead in April 1918. Looking again at the picture, it is clear that the building is still standing and is now the Chinese takeaway. It occurred to me that there must be a number of houses in Ivybridge that were the homes of soldiers and sailors killed in the Great War – perhaps you live in one of them. Starting with the big houses on the outskirts of Ivybridge, Lieutenant Orlerbar’s parents lived at Rutt House, Captain Hawker at the Chantry and Major Bayly at Highland House. It is possible to walk around the ‘old’ centre of Ivybridge to see some of the other residences. Starting at the Watermark and walking along Costly Street, Stoker James Henry Nichols lived at number 5 and William Roskelly, 5th Devons, at number 8. Across the main road, Petty Officer Ernest Lang lived at 7

Erme Road. Turning left up Highland Street, pausing perhaps at the church to look at Captain Hawker’s stone cross memorial, Harold Edwin Folley, 2nd Essex, lived at number 10 Highland and Robert John Anstiss of the 9th Devons also lived somewhere on this street. Number 3 Crescent Road was the home of William and Sibilla Hannaford, two of their sons Albert and William were killed. Down the hill and across the Ivy Bridge Private Alf Couch, 6th Devons, lived at 2 Charlton Terrace and George Hattrick, Royal Navy, at number 17 Bridge Park. On the western side of the town, Stoker Charlie Deville lived at 3 Western Road and Petty Officer Edwin Joseph Penwill at 2 Kimberly Villas. Sergeant Millman, Royal Army Medical Corps, lived at 2 Keaton Road and Cephas Hurrell, 4th Devons, at number 22. Nearby Stoker Cecil Victor Screech lived at number 5 Belmont Road and Arthur Horton, 2nd Devons, at number 11. Perhaps Ivybridge Town Council could consider commissioning some blue ‘lived here’ plaques commemorating these men?

Helping people who would otherwise be unable to use local facilities and be at risk of being cut off from their communities has been at the heart of a community service which has been serving elderly, disabled or isolated local people for over 20 years. Ivybridge & District Community Transport Association was started in 1994 as there was no suitable transport at that time for the elderly who wanted to do their shopping in Ivybridge. It now provides an invaluable service to people who have difficulty using public transport, either because there is none available or they have physical difficulty using conventional transport. I&DCTA is supported by the county and district councils and a number of town and village councils. It offers two services, ring and ride minibuses for shopping and a voluntary car service for more personal journeys.

Day trip every 2 weeks on a Friday..........................£5 A trip further afield to towns like Tavistock and Newton Abbot. All times are approximate and dependant on who needs to be collected. Please contact I&DCTA for more information.

well MISSION LITTLE BLACK DRESS BY CLAIRE MORGAN-HUGHES Devon Fit Camp

We really are in the throws of autumn, but that hasn’t dampened spirits at Devon Fit Camp! It has been a bumper month for us with so many exciting things going on! Check out our blog on the website (see below) for up-todate news. I’d like to introduce Mary. She’s been training with me since July of this year, joining purely to “feel healthier” – and she certainly does! She recently sent me her pictures (right) and I am delighted to share them with you; I’m so proud of her. She’s turned her life around, and feels so much more positive since she started. “I’m so proud of how I’ve taken control of my life and turned it around in such a short space of time. I feel better, healthier, mentally in control and so much more positive.” Her words to you are “If you are determined enough and want it enough you can achieve what you may think is impossible” Mary has lost in excess of 28 inches in just three months and is still counting. Her goal posts have moved and she’s flying towards her next mission – Christmas. One in front of the camera, not behind it this year! Our training sessions are not only fun and motivational, but challenging too. You work to your own level and as your body changes shape, you tone up and lose the lbs and your fitness improves. We have a fabulous venue to train at, with beautiful surroundings and a surface which is super kind to our joints. Our members attend Devon Fit Camp for a number of reasons: to get fit, to lose weight, to decrease their stress levels and to train in a motivational and supportive group.. • Are you fed up of year after year having to

opt for a dress for the Christmas party that hides the lumps and bumps? • Would you like this year to choose the one you want to wear? The one that makes you feel a million dollars! • Wouldn’t it be good to wear that dress that shows off your figure, not hide it away. The one that draws loads of compliments and makes you feel sexy and desirable. Whatever your motivation, you’ll always be very welcome.

It really isn’t too late – find out more and apply for your place either online or at Camp. We’d love to see you and help you with your Mission Little Black Dress this winter. Remember to ask us about how you can win your camp for FREE! Keep happy and healthy, Claire. Devon Fit Camp 01752 426223, claire@devonfitcamp.co.uk, devonfitcamp.co.uk, facebook.com/devonfitcamp

Tackling head injury

well

BY NIKKI SMITH, MCSP South Hams Physio

Although disappointing that the England team was knocked out in the pool stages of the Rugby World Cup, it was still an amazing sporting spectacle – sheer power and speed together with ruthless tactics. It is therefore not surprising that the number one injury in this sport is concussion or head injury. Head injury is ‘an injury or any trauma to the scalp, skull, or brain. The injury may be only a minor bump on the skull or a serious brain injury. Head injury can be either closed within the skull or open (penetrating)’. Head injuries can present very differently from person to person and depending on severity. The symptoms of a minor head injury are usually mild and short lived: • A mild headache • Nausea (feeling sick) • Mild dizziness • Mild blurred vision If anyone experiences these mild symptoms after a knock, bump or blow to the head, you should go to your local A&E department for a check-up. There is not normally any treatment for minor head injuries, but getting the appropriate assessment and advice is important. Severe head injuries require immediate medical C attention because there’s a risk of serious brain damage. Signs include:

• Unconsciousness – either brief (concussion) or for a longer period of time • Fits or seizures • Difficulty speaking or staying awake • Problems with the senses – such as hearing loss or double

It is so rewarding to visibly see the difference in someone who has accessed counselling, and to witness how this affects their lifestyle; when clients are able to acknowledge that ‘YES’ they do matter and ‘YES’ their mental wellbeing does count. I offer the first session free so that you can see for yourself how easy it can be to talk, without the fear of being judged. I work with all ages including children and young adults, on a wide range of issues including depression, anxiety, anger management, relationship issues, low self esteem, bullying, bereavement, eating disorders, suicidal thoughts etc. I firmly believe that Counselling should be available to all, when that person is ready, not dependant on a waiting list. You may not think so right now, but YOU hold the key to unlocking significant change or simply acceptance of how things are for you. vision • Repeated vomiting • Blood or clear fluid coming from the ears or nose • Memory loss (amnesia) If you experience any of these symptoms after a head injury, go immediately to your nearest A&E department or call 999 and ask for an ambulance. If in doubt always seek medical attention. There are many incidents of missed head injury diagnosis due to the potential slow onset or initial presentation of mild to minor symptoms that then develop over time. Current advice is to ensure you monitor the person who has sustained the head injury for 24 hours to ensure the symptoms do not change or deteriorate. Long term effects of severe brain injury can be life changing, therefore, fast action and medical intervention is paramount. Happy Birthday Ivy Counselling BY YVONNE AND DIANE Ivy Counselling

“We would like to thank all our clients, past and present, for putting your trust in us and allowing us to be part of your journey. ”

{|

As we move into our fifth year, we are reflecting on some of the clients we have had the privilege of facilitating with sometimes very painful periods in their lives. We would like to share some of the most recent testimonies that we have received based on experiences with Ivy Counselling. “Going to Ivy Counselling is the best decision I have made. It took a lot of strength but I am so glad to take the step and asked for their support. Tracy was so warm, welcoming, non judgmental and understanding and feel so lucky to have met her and am so thankful that I now I have my old self back and can look forward to a better future.” JH

This summer a new member has joined the Ivybridge Hypnotherapy team. He’s a scruffy, friendly little dog called Jasper, who is winning the hearts of my clients! Jasper is a clumber spanielpoodle cross, which makes him a hypoallergenic and laid back little chap. Already at five months he’s joins me for most sessions (unless the client prefers he stay away). There is a lot of science behind the use of dogs in therapy. Their presence is known to “How can I adequately give justice or express the gratitude I have for service that very probably saved my life. It’s impossible! Diane took me in as someone who was clawing, desperate and exhausted for a reason to live and provided the life line needed and so expertly given. She then guided me with great care to work through a myriad of painful lifelong issues, enabling me to

ease the symptoms of stress and sadness in humans, and release feel-good chemicals. For me as a hypnotherapist, that is great news. Unlike traditional talking therapies, the modern approach of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is based on our current scientific understanding of emotions and the brain. We don’t dig back into the past, so sessions are forward focused, relaxing and fun. Having Jasper has other beneemerge as someone with self generating worth and a chance to have a well balanced, emotionally healthy fulfilling future. Such a life changing process is simply priceless and I will never forget the patience, selflessness and professionalism of your work, thank you so very much.” HC “I really would like to thank Yvonne for everything she did for me; she helped me to see things

fits, too. Getting some exercise is one of the best ways to fight off depression and reduce stress. And we all need to maintain a sensible life-work balance. We can all find our own way to make our lives joyful, and for me that is walking with Jasper up the beautiful Erme valley. Come and say hi if you see us around! If you need help to lift anxiety or sadness, or perhaps to get a good night’s sleep, book a free initial consultation in Ivybridge or Plymouth. HIGHER DIVISION HOLDS NO FEARS l rugby Ivybridge Rugby Club 1st XV have made a stunning start to life in National Three South West, winning four out of their first five league games. Following two consecutive promotions, the side got off to a dream start when forward Alex Hall scored a try in the opening minute of the opening match. They went on to record a 13-9 win against Old Patesians – with Matt Grieveson accounting for their other points – in front of a large crowd at Cross-in-Hand. The fixture list conspired to draw five consecutive derby matches for the newly-promoted side, with the first a tough trip to Barnstaple. Ivybridge came within a couple of minutes of winning on the road, but a late converted try saw them lose narrowly, 25-23. The big games kept coming, with last season’s runners-up Exmouth next, at Cross-in-Hand. But the young Ivybridge side were not overawed, and secured a bonus point 29-20 win. In a ding-dong first half the lead changed hands several times, before a converted W try saw the home side go into the

half time interval ahead. Despite Ivybridge edging ahead soon after the re-start, the visitors got within two points, before finally succumbing after a late converted Bridgers try. Team Green’s impressive form continued when they beat previously unbeaten Brixham 20-12 at home, which saw the side climb to third in the division. Ivybridge raced into 13-0 lead thanks to tries by Alex Hall and Ben Watts and an early drop-goal from Matt Grieveson. Brixham got back into the game after the interval with a converted try, but Ivybridge increased their advantage with less than 15 minutes to play when player-coach Lewis Paterson went over. A late Brixham try proved no more than a consolation effort. A tremendous away win at Devon rivals Newton Abbot was Ivybridge’s first success on the road and saw them move up to second in the table. They ran in five tries, courtesy of Dan Jones, Billy Pinkus, Tom Scoles, Mike Cox and John Morgan on the way to a 27-20 bonus

HARRIERS’ LADIES WIN BRITISH HALF MARATHON CHAMPIONSHIP BRONZE l athletics Erme Valley Harriers’ ladies team returned to Cardiff and again took the team bronze medal in the British Half Marathon Championships. The trio of Alison McEwing (1.22.59), Alison Thorn (1.23.56) and Cleo Perry (1.24.21) matched their performance from a year earlier, also in the Welsh capital. A special mention also to Sarah Hirons (1.29.21), who was just outside the cut to be counted as part of the three-person team. Thorn was also 3rd fv40 and Perry 4th fv40, with Perry and Hirons also running personal best times. There were also good runs from Harriers’ men Allister Bristow (1.16.17) and Neil Holmes (1.20.52). There was a strong Harriers’ turnout for the return of the popular Autumn Trail Run, a popular ‘off road’ event run in the picturesque ground of Newnham Park. Andy Norris recovered from a spectacular fall at the last river crossing to finish 3rd, and 1st mv40. Close behind was Allister

Bristow in 5th, and 3rd mv40. Sarah Hirons had a great run to finish 1st fv35, whilst Russ Mogridge was 2nd mv50. Emma Lake was 3rd fv40 and Ken Summers did very well to finish 1st mv65. Erme Valley also won the men’s team prize. Harriers’ ladies had performed well in recent weeks. Sarah Hirons was 3rd lady at the Dart-

moor Volcano 10 mile race and also 3rd lady at the Truro Half Marathon. At the Ladies’ Newton Abbot 10K, Cleo Perry (39.44) was 2nd overall and 1st fv40, whilst Jaine Swift (47.06) was 2nd fv45. Alison Thorn (38.51) ran well at the Taunton 10K where she was 1st fv40. At the same event, Mike Hansen (39.35) was 1st mv55.

Elsewhere, Tom Packer had a good run at the Burnham Half Marathon with a time of 1.26.13. Graham Reed achieved a personal best time of 61.38 at the Oldbury 10, whilst Andy Newcombe achieved a time of 43.26 at the Newquay 10K. î For more information go to www.ermevallyharriers.co.uk
