NEWS Vote on local plan in referendum A vote on the Ivybridge Neighbourhood Plan is set to be held this month. The town council is urging everyone on the electoral register who lives in the Ivybridge Parish, plus the houses in the wider plan area, to vote on the plan in the referendum on Thursday, 30th November. The question to be asked at the referendum will be: “Do you want South Hams District Council to use the Neighbourhood Plan for Ivybridge to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhood area?” î See page 8 for more details.
Children at Manor Primary enjoyed a fantastic residential at Heatree House near Manaton on Dartmoor. They took part in a wide variety of adventurous activities, including
stream scrambling, high ropes, mountain biking and a wilderness adventure which allowed the children to explore a corner of Dartmoor. For many this was their
first experience away from home, but they all thrived on every new challenge, working brilliantly within teams and getting the very best out of the whole experience.
ADVICE CHARITY LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS The biggest advice charity in the South Hams is asking people to come forward and help. Citizens Advice South Hams is looking for volunteers to join its training programme to become part of its advice team, giving free, confidential advice to anyone who has a problem with debt, consumer rights, benefits, disability issues, housing, employment, relationship problems, homelessness and more. Volunteers receive full training and are supported and supervised as they give advice. There are no specific qualifications or experience required, just an ability to be open-minded, be good at listening, enjoy helping people
and have basic computer skills. The advice line for problems is 03 444 111 444.l The charity are also asking people to join its new network of Friends and help with fundraising efforts so that it can continue its vital work and help keep its main office in Totnes and its outreach centre in Ivybridge. Janie Moor, manager at Citizens Advice South Hams, says: “Last year we helped over 4,000 local residents with over 9,000 issues. We are currently experiencing a rising demand on our services and would like to increase our volunteer numbers. “We offer an initial eight-week training course for volunteers

hedgehog friendly, which will not only provide the hedgehogs with more safe environments in which to roam and explore but also, hopefully, more suitable places for Linda to release recovered and rehabilitated hedgehogs. The Brownies hope to raise both awareness and some much-needed funds for their rescue and care.
They also hope to map sightings of hedgehogs across the town to better understand their movement and to learn in which areas populations are thriving. The Brownies will have a stall at Ivybridge Christmas market and you can report any sightings and keep up-to-date with their progress on their Facebook page.
2nd Ivybridge Brownies are starting a local campaign to ‘Help Our Hedgehogs’. The girls decided to act after hearing about the plight of the nocturnal creature from Linda Squires from Hedgehog Care and Rehabilitation. The Brownies are encouraging people to make their garden
to become ‘Gateway Advisers’ acting as the first point of contact for anyone coming to us with a problem. After volunteers have worked with us for a while they may wish to undergo further training to become full advisers. “We have also launched a new Friends group, [which] has started to help raise funds and awareness and would perhaps attract people who don’t feel they want to become advisers but would still like to help. “We would love to hear from anyone who wants to work with us and help make a difference to people’s lives.”

NEWS
ENERGY ADVICE DO YOU HAVE A ‘VIRGIN LOFT’? The weather is turning colder and we’re digging out our winter coats, so now is a good time to make sure that your home is wrapped up warm, too. Heat escapes through the walls, roof, windows, floor and drafts. For many houses in Ivybridge simple loft and cavity wall insulation can make a big difference to how warm your home feels and how much you spend on fuel over the winter. The good news is that there are grants available, and we can help you apply for them.
This is the lovely group of children in the new Foundation Class at Erme Primary School. The school is very pleased to welcome the new children and has been really impressed at how well and how quickly they’ve settled in.
FUNDING FOR ‘INSPIRING’ HOUSING SCHEME AGREED Funding for a new housing scheme in Ivybridge for people with learning disabilities has been given the go ahead by district councillors. At an executive meeting, members of South Hams District Council approved plans to allocate £130,000 of S106 money to Ivybridge Town Council’s housing project. The scheme would provide affordable accommodation for people with learning disabilities and transform the former care home at Butterpark into six homes, plus a three bedroom learning and training house. Cllr Kathy Cuthbert, ward member for Ivybridge East, said: “The project has grown from a tiny seed into a fantastic project. Ivybridge is such a supportive community for people with learning disabilities
and because of that, many parents were looking at how they can move forward as their adult children wished to live independently in their own homes. “This project has grown from that wish and I am so pleased that SHDC has approved the funding.” Section 106 money is paid to SHDC by developers, which the council uses to support communities where development takes place. Cllr Hilary Bastone, joint portfolio holder for customer first, said: “I must congratulate Ivybridge Town Council on this inspiring project, they’ve done a brilliant job.” Ivybridge Town Council is now in the process of purchasing the land and is currently working with social services, care and support organisation The DOVE Project
and Brook Housing to provide supported living arrangements for potential residents. Deputy mayor of Ivybridge, Cllr Ann Laity, who is the council’s representative on the steering group for the Butterpark project, said: “The council is delighted that the money has been allocated for this innovative project which will deliver rented accommodation for people with moderate learning disabilities. “As the leader of Stairways, I know all too well the difficulties in finding suitable, secure tenancies and the Ivybridge parents of adult children are hugely relieved that we are making a start at tackling this issue. “We welcome the vote of confidence from SHDC in our scheme and the release of the money will enable us to deliver the project.”
MENTAL HEALTH PROJECT AIMS TO IMPROVE SUPPORT AND OPPORTUNITIES A project which aims to contribute to improving the quality of life for people with mental health conditions living in Ivybridge and the South Hams has been launched. The South Hams Mental Health Project was launched by South Hams CVS to coincide with World Mental Health Day on 10th October.
It will map all current services, find out what further community support may help, examine what support local organisations need to develop their services, as well as develop and promote volunteer opportunities and physical activities for people with mental health conditions. South Hams CVS hope that local
people and community groups will become involved in this project. You can find out more about the project at the next South Hams Voluntary Sector Forum on the morning of Wednesday, 22nd November. The forum is free, but booking is essential. Call 01803 862266 or cvs@southhamscvs.org.uk

The insulation is likely to be free if you are receiving benefits, and discounted in all other circumstances. Loft insulation grants are only available if you have a ‘virgin loft’ (no insulation) or less than 10cm already. There are even government grants available towards new boilers and night storage heaters for people in receipt of certain benefits. And we have a small stock of oil filled radiators available to borrow if you need short-term emergency heating. If you are worried about keeping warm this winter please get in touch with us. Our Energy Advice Team will be available at: • The Pop-Up Shop in Glanvilles Mill all week from 30th Oct - 4th Nov, 9am-3pm; • In the foyer at Tesco Lee Mill on Thursday 16th Nov, 9.30am4pm and; • Ivybridge Library, Mon 20th Nov from 10am-12.30pm. WELCOME from Reverend Ken Bromage, Branch Chaplain A Reading from the Gospel of John – Chapter 14:27 The Prayers Our Father, which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy Name. Thy Kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth, As it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, As we forgive them that trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, But deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, The power, and the glory, For ever and ever. Amen Hymn I vow to thee, my country, all earthly things above, Entire and whole and perfect, the service of my love, The love that asks no question, the love that stands the test, That lays upon the altar the dearest and the best, The love that never falters, the love that pays the price, The love that makes the undaunted the final sacrifice. And there’s another country, I’ve heard of long ago, Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know, We may not count her armies, we may not see her King, Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering, And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace. The National Anthem THE EXHORTATION They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn, At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them. 93-year-old author tells his wartime story in first novel A vivid portrait of life in the RAF in the Second World War is the debut book by a local author. of EARTH and SKY, by 93-year-old Owen Crispin, is a novel based on the true wartime story of the author. It tells the story of a young man’s journey from farmer’s boy to wartime service with the RAF. “On a crisp, bright day in 1942, Chris Anderson was called from his work on his family’s farm to join the RAF. Like so many young men of the time, his transition into
adulthood would be a strange and dramatic one. “Over the course of the war he would lose friends, struggle with guilt and find himself caught up in horrific accidents, but he would never let go of his love of the sky.” Owen was helped by Trudy Fuller, a library assistant at Ivybridge Library, who typed up most of the book and described it as “a labour of love for the both of us”. There is a display of the book in Ivybridge Library.

Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council
A friendly mill town – along the river, beside the moor – offering healthy, creative, sustainable future lifestyles
Ivybridge Neighbourhood Plan October 2017
Produced by the community of Ivybridge, led by Ivybridge Town Council in partnership with South Hams District Council, Devon County Council, and neighbouring Parish Councils
Neighbourhood Plan
Neighbourhood plan referendum In 2015, Ivybridge Neighbourhood Plan group consulted with local residents about the emerging plan for the town and had feedback from organisations and individuals. A leaflet and advertisement in The Ivybridge magazine ensured that everyone had information on the plan, supplemented by short videos on the council’s Facebook page and group members explaining the proposals at places like the Lions’ Funday and outside the Co-Op. Since then we have endeavoured to keep people up-to-date on our progress using our website – www.ivybridge.gov.uk – with our plan having been submitted to South Hams District Council in Autumn 2016. It all went rather quiet for a long period of time, but in the summer an examiner was appointed and she considered the proposals and policies in the plan, producing a report (copy on the website) seeking some minor alterations to some policies which the group accepted. The final version of the plan can be seen on the website. Referendum We now move to a referendum and WE NEED YOUR VOTE! On Thursday, 30th November, 2017, the Ivybridge Neighbourhood Plan will be put to the vote and we need everyone on the electoral register who lives in the Ivybridge Parish, plus the houses in the wider plan area, to vote.

If we receive a majority in favour of the plan it will then be adopted to be used as planning guidance. Please do not confuse this plan with the Joint Local Plan being considered for the whole of the South Hams. We have not included housing development to the east or the west in our plan – that is being allocated by South Hams DC. Our plan focuses more on the town centre – seeking the improvements that are gradually starting to emerge already, like the swimming pool. The question to be asked at the referendum will be: “Do you want South Hams District Council to use the Neighbourhood Plan for Ivybridge to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhood area?” Chairman of the Ivybridge Neighbourhood Plan Group, Steve Hitch, welcomed the news that the plan would finally be going to referendum. “We have been working on developing the vision and the plan itself since 2014, so this has been a very long haul,” he said. “I do hope that, as so many people have given time to develop the policies, you will be able to vote “yes” on 30th November.” More information can be found on the South Hams District Council website – southhams. gov.uk – or the documents can be viewed at The Watermark, the Town Hall or from reception at Follaton House in Totnes.

Join the Uproar!
On Saturday, 4th November, witness an astonishing comedy sensation. The Noise Next Door are causing a commotion with their fourth nationwide tour, an anarchic evening of side-splitting jokes, jaw-dropping characters and mind-blowing songs. Join the quickest wits in comedy as they transform audience suggestions into a fantastic, fresh new entertainment experience. Tickets: £14. Suitable for 15+.
Back by public demand
The New Jersey Boys return with their highly-acclaimed show on Friday, 24th November, featuring the music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, plus a tribute to another great rock and roll band, Showaddywaddy. The packed two-set programme is continuing to sell-out shows across the country. Featuring all the hits that made the Jersey Boys one of the most successful groups ever, early booking is recommended. Tickets: £17/£16 concessions.
The Pantaloons with A Christmas Carol
The critically-acclaimed Pantaloons Theatre Company present a brand-new adaptation
@ The Watermark of Charles Dickens’ fantastical festive fable. It’s Christmas Eve and tight-fisted Ebenezer Scrooge is meaner than ever... but will timely visits from the Ghosts of Christmases Past, Present and Future change his miserly ways? Performed by a multi-talented cast in The Pantaloons’ own inimitable style, this will be an evening out to remember. Featuring live music, audience interaction and absolutely no humbug. See them Sunday, 10th December, 7.30pm Tickets: £12/£10.
There are rumours that Santa is in Love
Maybe you’d like to know where the fairy on top of the Christmas tree comes from, or why you never see a Christmas elf, or what exactly happened to Frosty
the Snowman? Or maybe you’d like to know the greatest secret of them all... the one about Santa Claus and the thing he secretly loves best. Could it be presents? Could it be reindeer? Could it be snow? You’ll never guess, so if you want to find out then join Santa and his friends in this funfilled family musical complete with games, giggles and all your favourite Christmas songs. Santa will be available after the show to meet your little ones and give them a present, so don’t forget to bring your camera to capture the smiles! Pick from two showings on Wednesday, 20th December, 2pm or 4pm Tickets: £9.
Warm up at The Coffee Shop
The Watermark look forward to welcoming you to the popular Christmas Gift Fair on Saturday, 2nd December, 10am-1pm. More than 30 stalls of local craft and gift ideas for Christmas to suit all budgets. Free admission and a warm, festive, friendly atmosphere.
Winter is on its way, so why not try our winter warmer drink selection? Choose from favourites like Pumpkin Spice Latte and Mint Hot Chocolate. Start the day with a cooked breakfast, still only £5.60 including two rounds of toast and a tea or coffee. On Remembrance Sunday (12th Nov) the coffee shop will be open from 9am-12pm serving bacon and sausage baps with a regular tea or coffee for £3.50. In conjunction with the Christmas light switch-on, the coffee shop will stay open later on Friday, 24th November, serving mulled wine and mince pies.

Andy told members of his work in transcription and explained that there were openings for anyone who wished to help out, in any way they felt able, by just giving up a few hours during the week. Members were told that the club had enjoyed a good year, so much so that the treasurer recommended that subs remained at the current rate. Lynn thanked the committee for their hard work during the year, before presenting her badge of office to the incoming President, Margaret Hinchliffe. Margaret told members she was pleased to accept the office and said that Lynn

DOUBLE WINNERS
Erme WI achieved the double when they added the Anstice cookery cup to the Anstice handicraft cup they won in the spring. This was a fantastic achievement for the Ivybridge institute in a competition against other WIs in the area. The winning team in the latest competion, entitled ‘a royal tea for two’, were Sheila Hancox, Rosamund Shinner, Sharon Hosgood, Betty Fowles, Lynne Douglass, Betty Rowe and Sue Wilson. Members have again given generously to the ‘love in a box’ appeal, where parcels are sent to children at Christmas.
Ivybridge Theatre Company’s cast are ready to tread the boards in two adult comedies at The Watermark on Thursday 9th, Friday 10th and Saturday 11th November at 7.30pm. The Fat Lady Sings in Little Grimley, by David Tristram, is a return to the hilarious ‘Little Grimley’ sagas. The ‘famous four’ are back to tackle yet another threat to their theatrical survival – this time in the shape of a rival am-dram. They devise an ingenious military-style plan that doesn’t quite go to plan. ‘Whodidit?’ by Neil Harrison, set in the 1920s, is a rather bawdy parody of the Agatha Christie murder mystery with a richly-drawn gallery of ridiculous yet recognisable characters. The arrogant novelist husband, his absurdly conventional wife, his mad uncle and a very strange butler, to name but a few. A country house is thrown into chaos as an innuendo-obsessed inspector struggles to uncover the identity of the killer before anyone else meets their untimely end! Tickets are on sale from The Watermark box office tel. 01752 892220. Price: £7.50 and £1 deduction for Watermark Club Members. The plays are suitable for 15years+. Black Ivy Mysteries recently performed a 1920s-style murder mystery ‘Death on the River’ at Rochelles Cafe/Bistro. A spiffing time was had by all and they look forward to performing more mysteries at this venue in the new year. ITC meet at Chapel Place, Fore Street, every Wednesday at 7.30pm. If you have any interest in performing arts or even helping back-stage they would love to hear from you. ¢ Contact Ron Davis on 01752 893308 or visit ivybridgetheatre company.co.uk

SCHOOL REPORTS SPIRIT OF ADVENTURE Year 5 children from Manor Primary School had an amazing survival experience when they took part in a one-night residential at the Spirit of Adventure camp in Dittisham, near Dartmouth. They practised many skills which served them well during their stay, such as whittling, cooking pizza, constructing fires and a zip-wiring experience. The children learnt many valuable bush craft techniques on this brilliant twoday adventure! Finn, Isaac and Shannon
FARMWISE All of KS2 at Cornwood Primary School headed to Westpoint in Exeter for a jam-packed day learning about everything related to farming. This included cooking, making and tasting a range of foods and stroking cows, sheep, pigs and chicks. The day taught the children about where food comes from, the combines and tractors used to harvest it, and how we can recycle it all afterwards. A PLAY WITH NO WORDS… The children at Stowford School were captivated by a production of ‘Apple John’ written by Daniel Jamieson and performed by Theatre Alibi. The play tells the life story of a man called John and the growth of an apple tree from a pip cast HARVEST FESTIVAL Stowford School donated all the produce kindly brought in by the children, to the Ivybridge Foodbank. Jutta, a volunteer at the foodbank, accepted the donations and told the children about how the food bank helps families who need a little help from time to time. Jutta said “I’m staggered by the generosity of the children, parents and staff at Stowford School. I would like to thank each and everyone who donated.”
out the window of a train by John’s mother. The two lives are explored side by side: John as he journeys from childhood through adolescence and eventually to old age, and the apple pip from a tiny seed to a mature, fruiting tree. Each face challenges along the way including illness,
sadness, heavy snow and a hurricane, as well as blossom, fruit, babies and love. The play is superbly told through music, puppetry and clever use of a projector but without a single word. Some classes will be lucky enough to use the experience as a source for their English lessons.

MACMILLAN COFFEE MORNING The Erme held a MacMillan coffee morning... with a twist. Each class was invited to a mini ‘coffee’ afternoon where cakes and squash were available for a donation. The children’s generosity was matched by parents and carers, who generously made and then purchased cakes at a morning cake sale.

Enticing people to shop local this Christmas
NOVEMBER ON THE MOOR
What can local businesses do to entice us to shop in Ivybridge this Christmas? Jocelyn Wood, of Fearless Marketing, shares some creative ideas I don’t know about you, but I love living in Ivybridge and I also love Christmas. But it saddens me that we seem so willing to give our money to faceless corporations, travelling out of town or shopping online, rather than supporting our own local businesses. What can our local independent businesses do during this peak season to entice us to shop in Ivybridge rather than slogging down the A38 and joining some madding crowd? Here are a few of my favourite creative ideas. Create a strategy. Data is everything. Look at last year’s sales figures and identify those best sellers that you need to stock up again. Don’t limit your analysis to just your products. Think about your customers – create a description. Are they all the same? Where can you find them? How can you make Christmas shopping easier for them? Have a quick brainstorm with your team. Create targeted Christmas gift guides for kids, adults, bakers, crafters, music lovers, sports fanatics... Have fun with it. Make your lists easily available instore, on Facebook, your website and your blog. Post them around Ivybridge and consider sending them to related community groups; maybe offer their members an exclusive discount. Personalisation is key. Create a Christmas competition – instore and on Facebook. Create entry rules that will increase engagement. Check the relevant platforms rules and abide by them. Create eye catching social media posts in advance. Use scheduling platforms like Hootsuite or Buffer that make it quick and easy to set up posts that can be sent out throughout the Christmas season. Create and invest in Facebook ads. Take full advantage of the incredible level of detail available by creating offers to users based on age, location, interests and much more. Entice people with benefits such as free gift wrapping or mulled wine. If you want my full creative Christmas checklist please drop me an email – jocelyn@fearlessmarketing.solutions. Enter my free prize draw. Tell me how many times the word “Create” appears in my column and share your creative idea on my Facebook page where you can find full terms and conditions.

Thanks again to all of our volunteers who help keep Dartmoor a special place. This month we are hosting our annual Volunteer Warden AGM at our HQ at Parke, Bovey Tracy. One of the guest speakers will be Fiona Freshney from the RSPB who will be updating us on the Dartmoor Moorland Birds project. Dartmoor provides a refuge for many bird species that are in decline elsewhere. These include the Ring Ouzel, Curlew, Skylarks and Meadow Pipits. We will be interested to learn more about the project and will keep you updated about possible ways to help.

ble finishing positions. The other children took the girls’ lead, with further top 20 finishes in both the year 3/4 boys race, and year 5/6 girls race. Eleven South Brent boys lined up at the start of the year 5/6 boys race. From the off, it turned into a ‘two horse’ race between South Brent’s Eddie Lauri and Bovey Tracey’s leading boy. Eddie took a strong lead, and his perseverance enabled him to hold off the challenge to cross the line first and be crowned Partnership champion.
Did you know that there is an old gunpowder factory at Powdermills near Postbridge? It’s a fascinating place with lots of old buildings and chimneys still on site. It is on open access land and well worth a visit. If you are planning to have fireworks this year, please do not set them off on the moor. They can disturb the livestock and wildlife, and also have the potential to start wildfires. The spent fireworks cases can severely injure livestock. Dartmoor is full of archaeology from throughout the ages and we often work with our archaeologists to help uncover and preserve these special sites. One of the sites we may look at working on in the future is the old Napther site (and latter China Clay workings) at Shipley Bridge – watch this space for further information. In the meantime, we have some volunteering dates for people to come and help us. No need to book, just turn up! • November 12th – Cadover bridge car park. Two minute litter pick 10.30am-12pm. • November 14th – Diamond Lane ditch dig. Meet at Shipley Bridge car park. 10am. • November 25th – Roborough Rock volunteers. Meet at the Rock at 10am for a day of vegetation clearance on the dispersal bays.

Devon Fit Camp members took on the Plymouth 10k last month in memory of former member and friend Laura WeatherallPlane, who recently lost her life to cancer after an eight-year battle. Laura was an ambassador for CoppaFeel! and her friends recognised her as a true inspiration for the work she did to help promote awareness for the illness she was sadly fighting. The team ran in turquoise t-shirts, lots of glitter and plenty of smiles (and tears) at the Plymouth 10k on 8th October. Turquoise was Laura’s favourite colour. The team ran, jogged and walked around the 10k route in gorgeous October sunshine. For those that knew her, knew she was an amazing beacon of light and brightened everyone’s
day. She was a true inspiration to all of us at DFC, all those she taught, in her fundraising and in living life to the full. Taking part in the Plymouth 10k wasn’t about getting a fast

wellness such a fantastic cause. It was an emotional day for so many reasons – we wanted to make Laura proud and carry on her good work. WORLD DIABETES DAY November 14th is World Diabetes Day and this year the International Diabetes Federation is focussing on women with diabetes as it’s theme. The campaign is being backed by all major health organisations to draw attention to the issues especially attributed to diabetes and to keep the disease firmly in the public spotlight. I feel it’s important for everyone to get involved and promote prevention of Type 2 Diabetes and help prevent future generations of women suffering from the disease. There are currently over 199 time, it was all about getting out million women living with there and remembering Laura diabetes and this total is and her amazing legacy. It was projected to increase to 313 fantastic to see so many of our million by 2040. cause for the spread of the condition. It’s only through a shared effort and responsibility that we can get the numbers to fall. Healthy living and exercise is still the best way to treat and prevent Type 2 Diabetes and all the health complications associated with it. Across Great Britain, only 29 per cent of women are meeting recommended physical activity levels so it’s crucial to start to reverse the tide and prevent diabetes from affecting more people this way. I’m happy to talk to anyone who has been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes recently and offer some free advice on the positive changes they can make to their life, starting today. wellness of picking up the telephone and admit that help is needed. Counselling involves you talking about sensitive issues and revealing personal thoughts and feelings. For counselling to be effective, it is important to build a trusting and safe relationship with your counsellor. We say a good counsellor will focus on you, ensuring you are central to the relationship, whilst listening without judging or criticising, this would provide a platform for which exploration could evolve and together we could learn what is impacting on you, and perhaps those around you. It is not about you being told what to do and how to do it, your friends and family can do that, we provide a safe space for you to explore, moving to a deeper level and this is all achieved by working at your pace. You can then draw your own conclusions – after all, YOU have the answers within, YOU just don’t know it yet. All our counsellors here at Ivy Counselling are experienced and

it for later use. People with type 1 will need to inject insulin to replace the body’s own supply. Type 2 often occurs in mid to late life when the body is unable to use the insulin that the pancreas produces. This is known as insulin resistance, but people with type 2 can also produce insufficient insulin. If your blood sugars are not well controlled, your small nerves can be damaged so they may not feel heat, cold or pain. This is called peripheral sensory neuropathy. When this happens, it is very easy to injure your feet without realising it. Your arteries can be damaged too – they become stiff and clogged up. This is called peripheral arterial disease. If your blood supply is impaired, it reduces the body’s ability to heal itself. So you can imagine getting a new pair of shoes that rub a bit and cause an ulcer, followed by poor circulation preventing the wound healing is a recipe for disaster. It is very important to check

If you are considering selling, or have sold, an asset such as a buy-to-let property, shares or a business, you may well end up paying capital gains tax. You are allowed to make gains of up to £11,300 a year before CGT is due and depending on what you sell and your level of income the rates of tax vary from anything between 10% to 28%. What if there was a way of potentially getting rid of that as well as getting 30% income tax relief? Well, there is. The rub is that you need to invest at least as much as the gain you made (not the proceeds) to make all of the CGT go away. You can invest only some of the gain, you are then limited to how much CGT you save, but it’s still
worthwhile. The investment goes into an Enterprise Investment Scheme (EIS), which an IFA can talk to you about. We can then defer the gain until the investment is sold, which could be over several years, using your annual exemption as mentioned above, meaning you get all of your money back (maybe plus a bit of growth if you’re lucky), tax free, saving the CGT. To make it even better, you then also get 30% of your investment off-set against your income tax over the last two years, so chances are you will receive an income tax refund as well, meaning potentially up to 58% tax relief! There are certain time restrictions you need to observe to qualify for the various reliefs and specialist advice is needed before you make any investment, but even if the investment itself doesn’t give a great return, the tax savings alone make EIS investments well worth a look.

A newly-formed local swimming club is celebrating after enjoying medal success at its first official competition. A squad of eight swimmers from Dartmoor Darts Aquatic competed in the Exeter Open meeting held over two days at the Life Centre in Plymouth. All the competitors, aged between 11 and 27 years, finished in the top three of their event and set many personal best times. The
final tally of 24 medals included 12 gold, seven silver and five bronze. “It was a proud moment seeing the swimmers perform so well at our first official meet,” said performance director Matthew Henry. Dartmoor Darts Aquatic (DDA) was validated by Swim England in August and is a swimming squad pursing a bespoke programme focussed on performance swimming. î dartmoordartsaquatics.co.uk
There was incorrect information in paragraph 3 of Richardsons Legal Services’ August editorial, “Deed of Variation and IHT”. Paragraph 3 should read: “Let’s just look then at someone who owns their own home worth, say £500,000, and has savings of £500,000. And let’s assume they have a transferable allowance from a deceased spouse and are leaving everything to their children. They currently have allowances of £850,000 and their heirs will have to pay 40% of £150,000 to the government from their inheritance ie £60,000 - Inheritance tax bill.”

EPCs and the private rental sector
PUTTING AFFAIRS IN ORDER David Richardson, founder of Richardsons Legal Services
By Jo Melvin of Howard and Over DID YOU KNOW… the Energy Efficiency (Private Rented Property) (England and Wales) Regulations 2015 establish a minimum level of energy efficiency for privately-rented property in England and Wales. This means that, from April 2018, landlords of privately-rented domestic and non-domestic property in England or Wales must ensure that their properties reach at least an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of E before granting a new tenancy to new or existing tenants. These requirements will then apply to all private rented properties in England and Wales – even where there has been no change in tenancy arrangements – from 1 April 2020 for domestic properties, and from 1 April 2023 for non-domestic properties. The regulations were subsequently amended in June 2016 to postpone the dates on which the Private Rented Sector Exemptions Register will open to domestic and non-domestic landlords. The domestic property regulations will be enforced by local authorities. The non-domestic property regulations will be enforced by local weights and measures authorities. We can provide guidance and advice on: • Scope of the regulation: the steps you, as a landlord, should take to determine whether your property is covered by the regulations, and what you can do to ensure your property complies with the minimum level of energy efficiency; • Relevant improvements: how you can identify appropriate energy efficiency improvements for your property; No-upfront Cost Funding (domestic only): how you can investigate the availability of no-cost funding to cover the cost of improving a domestic property; • Exemptions and exclusions: the steps a landlord should take to register a valid exemption; • Enforcement: the options open to enforcement authorities when policing compliance with the minimum standards, including information on fines and other penalty options; The National PRS Exemptions Register Where you believe your F or G EPC rated property which you rent out qualifies for an exemption from the minimum energy efficiency standard, you should be aware an exemption must be registered on the National PRS Exemptions Register. This register service is currently running as a pilot. Landlords who wish to register an exemption for a domestic or non-domestic property as part of this pilot should e-mail the BEIS minimum standards team at PRSregisteraccess@beis.gov.uk 26

CHARITY GOLF DAY FOR EPILEPSY Ivybridge district councillor and chairman of South Hams District Council Kathy Cuthbert raised over £2,800 for Epilepsy Action hosting a charity golf day at Bigbury Golf Club. Thirty teams teed-up, including Ivybridge Rugby Club and David May Motors. Cllr Kathy Cuthbert said: “It was a splendid day. I cannot thank everyone enough for turning up and supporting this charity,
which is so close to my heart. “I have chosen Epilepsy Action because I too have epilepsy. However, I think of myself as one of the fortunate ones because I have it totally under control. “But for some people epilepsy can be totally debilitating. “I am passionate about raising awareness of epilepsy and I am delighted that so many people have come out to support the event.”

WILLS, TRUSTS & PROBATE
CONVEYANCING
INJURY
DISPUTE RESOLUTION
BUSINESS
Just this year, I have had a client pass away the night before she could sign her new Will. Another client thankfully just made it by taking out a Lasting Power of Attorney in the early stages of dementia before it was too late. A further client wanted to put his property into trust too late after his wife was diagnosed with dementia. The message must always be to do it now, as none of us knows just what is around the corner. For young families without a Will, do it now, if only to safeguard your children by naming guardians in case anything happens to you. Without guardians in a Will, there is no guarantee that those you would wish to look after your children will be appointed to do so. For the over 60s, it becomes increasingly important to give someone you trust the legal power to make decisions for you if you become incapable. Even a spouse has very limited legal power to act for his/her partner. A Lasting Power of Attorney is the answer. A Home Protection Trust can protect your home from all unforeseen eventualities – making it easier for your beneficiaries and often save thousands of pounds in Probate costs – but only if taken out early enough. The message is always, put your affairs in order, and do it now while you are able.

dog welfare charity with expert knowledge in dog behaviour. Our hope is that simple advice such as never leave your child alone with any dog, never tease a dog, don’t approach a dog you don’t know and always ask the owner before you approach a dog could prevent more dog attacks. “We all remember the Green Cross Code and we want Be Dog Smart to be just as well known.”
The Erme Primary School has achieved the silver School Games Mark Award for the 2016/17 academic year. The School Games Mark is a government-led award scheme, launched in 2012, facilitated by the Youth Sport Trust to reward schools for their commitment to the development of competition across their school and in the community. The school’s sporting achievements include engaging at least 20% of pupils in extra-curricular sporting activity every week, and to provide the opportunity through inter-school and intraschool competition for both boys and girls. The school has seen many children compete in local inter-school competitions, and is proud of their dedication to all aspects of school sport As part of the application, the school had to fulfil criteria in the areas of participation, competition, workforce and clubs, and is pleased that the hard work of everyone at the school has been rewarded.

NEW HEAD COACH IN AT THE DEEP END
l swimming
The new head coach at Dinnaton Swimming Club has been firmly ‘thrown in at the deep end’ with back-to-back competitions over three successive weekends. Former English international swimmer Aaron Rickhuss, who took over in September, led a strong team of nine swimmers to the Exeter Open meet at Plymouth Life Centre. The swimmers came away with 21 medals, including seven golds.

THORN IN GREAT FORM
INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS FOR BEN
l athletics
An Ivybridge triathlete has been reflecting on a successful season which saw him compete in GB age group qualifiers for both the European and world championships. Ben Oman, a full-time firefighter, recounts three major races where he represented team GB at age group level as the highlights. On 18th June he travelled to Kitzbuhel, Austria, for the ETU Standard Distance European Triathlon Championships. In hot conditions, Ben finished in 32nd position overall in his category – and was the 16th GB athlete across the line – in a time of 2.22.52. Later in June (24th), the action moved to Dusseldorf for the ETU Sprint Distance European Triathlon Championships (a sprint distance race is half the distance of a standard race). Racing around the city, Ben finished with a time of 1.13.40 gaining an overall position of 24th place in category and was 11th GB athlete. On 17th September, Ben stepped
Erme Valley Harriers athlete Alison Thorn has been in great form in recent weeks. Thorn finished 2nd fv40 at the Taunton 10K in a time of 38.25 and was then first fv40 in the prestigious Cardiff Half Marathon in a time of 1.24.35. Two weeks later, Thorn, this time representing Devon, was 2nd lady and 2nd fv40 with a time of 1.24.54 at the Great West Run held in Exeter. Devon ladies and men also won the team prizes. Also at the Great West Run in Exeter, Martin Battershill (1.28.45) had a fine run, while Rebecca Lee achieved a personal best time of 1.49.51. Harriers athletes continued to compete ‘far and wide’, with Patrick Wakeley (1.40.52) and wife Dinah (2.10.01) completing the Bristol Half Marathon. A week later, Patrick Wakely (3.34.28) and club colleague Neil Moffatt completed the Loch Ness Marathon. Jean-Baptiste Rouvelin made the trip to Copenhagen for the half marathon and despite a thunderstorm a couple of miles from the finish achieved a personal best time of 1.29.52. Andy Trigg journeyed to Austria for the Graz Marathon in Austria and, despite being under the weather, had a great run. He recorded a new club record for a vet 55 with a time of 3.09.46 as he finished in 51st place overall. Closer to home, Richard Lane completed the very tough and extremely 34

Linda Bracher and Kate Medlicott took part in a triathlon at Hever Castle in Kent.

Although the race was not initially on Ben’s schedule, he again performed well, finishing in 54th place overall in his category in a time of 2.14.17. “I have had a good season, and am really pleased with my performance in both the European and world events,” said Ben. “In all three races my overall
In the Plymouth 10K, young Sam Yearling and Mike Miners did particularly well. Miners was 19th in 37.34, with Yearling just one second and one place behind. Emma Lake had a good run to finish in 89th place in 41.46. Nathan Brown had a terrific run to win the first race in the Armada Athletics Winter 3K Series in Central Park, Plymouth, with Mike Miners 5th and Liam Hallows 9th.
