160km, in teams of three to four, with Japan chosen as this year’s hosting country. The expedition lasts 10 days and, with a limited budget, we were encouraged to find hospitality with the locals. Communicational skills are the key to this expedition’s success, as the aim of the trip is to learn more about a different culture. We were dropped off in the city of Okaiya, in the Nagano prefec-

ture, and had to make our way to Mt Togakushi, which was the final destination for all 17 teams. We planned our route so that we visited points of interest along the way, including the famous Matsumoto castle. We had some surreal experiences, including being offered a place to stay by a Buddhist priest in his temple! We completed various small projects, which could be anything

from helping with farming to learning a Japanese nursery rhyme. Alongside this was the vital, major project, which is unique and chosen by each team. We met so many kind and generous people along the way who helped us out tremendously, often offering us home-grown produce or driving us to possible places of hospitality. The Explorer Belt was a great opportunity to develop fundamental life skills that we will greatly benefit from in the near future. We fully recommend the Explorer Belt to anyone who has a desire to do some truly independent travelling in an unfamiliar country so that you can get first hand experience of the difference of another country’s culture and their people’s way of life.

Welcome to a packed October issue of The Ivybridge magazine. This, and previous October issues are, I think, my favourite ones of the year to work on as we run a very special feature, one which cannot help bring a smile to your face. I am once again delighted to be able to produce First Class, a photo special of the children who started school for the first time at the town’s primary schools at the start of the new academic year (page 12). I think you’ll agree they are super photos and it’s lovely to see the happy and enthusiastic faces – as well as a few cheeky ones too! – of the children as they embark on their education journey. I am sure you’ll want to join me in wishing them all the very best for their school years. Ivybridge Rugby Club is a fantastic asset of the town, providing excellent opportunities for young people to play rugby, as well as enjoying success with its senior teams. It is well-known across the region as being a wellrun, progressive club, so it is fantastic that the way the club is managed has been recognised with Rugby Football Union accreditation (page 38). There is a lot happening in and around Ivybridge this month, so turn to the most comprehensive What’s On guide (page 16) of any magazine in the area for details of events, clubs and activities. Informative, relevant community content is at the heart of what we do, and sets The Ivybridge magazine apart from the rest. This month is certainly no different, and I hope you enjoy reading our latest issue.

A local rugby player, who has a cochlear implant to support his hearing which prevents him from playing for his local club, has been selected for the England Deaf Rugby squad. Steve Moran took part in trials in August and was delighted to receive the news of his call up. Despite being unable to play for Ivybridge RFC, Steve is a committed and active supporter of the club’s

senior squad, including running the touch line for 1st XV matches. After the side’s first home match of the season, Steve presented his England shirt to club President Alan Knight in front of delighted players and supporters. “Steve is an extremely popular member of our club and we are all so pleased that he was successful in his trials and will now have the opportunity to play a

Manstow Football Club, which plays at Filham Park and runs a number of youth teams, are keen to improve the facilities at the park, but to do so they need a 15 year lease from the Town Council to access grant funding. The Town Council wishes to support them in their ambitions, but as this lease would be for more than seven years, they must advertise the proposal. If anyone has any objections, they should contact the Town Clerk at Ivybridge Town Hall. Photo special page 12

ADVICE SERVICE OPEN LONGER The Citizens Advice Bureau’s weekly drop-in service at The Watermark will be open for longer thanks to help from Ivybridge Town Council The service is now open between 10am and 1pm, and more pre-arranged appointments will be available. If you need advice, call into The Watermark on Monday mornings and you will be able to see an advisor that day. Followup appointments, if required, will then be made. This extension of the service is available until September 2015. The CAB office at Totnes is open more often and telephone (or online/email) advice can be given – contact 08444 111 444 MondayThursday 10am-4pm.

DOG FOULING WARNING An increase in dog fouling has led to the district’s dog warden to remind owners that they must clean up after their dog. “There is no excuse for dog fouling anywhere,” says South Hams District Council dog warden Tracey Weaver. “I have been made aware of the problem and will be making extra visits in the area. “Anyone breaking the law who is witnessed by the Dog Warden will be subject to a £80 on-the-spot fine, or a maximum £1,000 fine if taken to court. We will also act on information it receives. If we are pro-

vided with a date and time, together with the identity of an offender, we will issue a fine.” Dog faeces is known to carry the toxicara parasite, which can cause blindness in children, and there is also concern that E-coli may be caught by contact with dog faeces. The Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 states that dog fouling must be picked up and disposed of forthwith. If you have any information, contact the Dog Warden on 01803 861117. All information is treated in strictest confidence.

Ivybridge during

THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918

A

popular view of the First World War is one of a frenzy of enlistment in 1914, with thousands of young men volunteering for army service, most of them joining ‘Pals Battalions’ that were to be wiped out at the Battle of the Somme. Ivybridge’s story is much more complex. Volunteering began almost as soon as the war started in 1914. Not surprisingly for a village close to the sea, there was a disproportionately large number joining the Navy. Of the 44 Ivybridge dead that we know about, 10 were sailors and two thirds (33) were soldiers. Over one third of these soldiers joined local regiments; 11 were in the Devonshire Regiment and one, Albert Hannaford, a Territorial battalion of the Duke of Cornwall’s Light Infantry. Of those 11 men who died whilst serving in the Devonshire Regiment, two were members of regular battalions and six were Territorial/ Yeomanry volunteers. Only three of those

killed were members of Kitchener or ‘Pals’ battalions (Lance Corporal Anstiss & Privates Damerell and Beable, all of the 9th Devons). Relatively few died in ‘famous’ battles, but: • Two sailors, both of them boiler room stokers, were killed at Jutland in May 1916

by tony rea

(Cecil Victor Screech on HMS Defence and James Henry Nichols on HMS Indefatigable). • In June 1916. Arthur Pearce, a shipwright, was aboard HMS Hampshire which was taking Lord Kitchener to a conference with the Russians. The ship struck a mine, sank and both Arthur Pearce and Kitchener died. • Lieutenant Robert Evelyn Orlebar died in the Neuve Chappel area of northern France two months before the Battle of Neuve Chapple in 1915. • Major John Bayly fought at Gallipoli and contacted an illness there which may have led to his death. Both the 8th and 9th Devons were heavily involved on the first day of the Battle of the Somme in 1916 and it is perhaps surprising that no Ivybridge men were killed – though men from Kingsbridge, Newton Abbott, Totnes, Plympton and Rattery died on the Somme that day. Sadly, three Ivybridge lads of the 9th Devons were to die in the Somme battle later in 1916.

RAINBOWS RAISE MONEY WITH A HOP, SKIP AND A JUMP Girls from Ivybridge and Bittaford Rainbows came together recently to raise money for Guide Dogs. The girls from the three units wanted to organise the event following a visit last year by Pam Gratton, community fundraiser at Guide Dogs, who explained that Guide Dogs do not receive any government funding. The girls set themselves the target of raising enough money to sponsor the training of a guide dog puppy for a year. Thirty one girls took part in a 30 minute circuit around Victoria Park which involved hopping, skipping,

running and jumping! They were sponsored by family and friends, who came along and showed their support, cheering the girls on as they completed the laps. Also present were Pam and retired guide dog Zorbee, as well as puppy walker Janet Steyn with pup-in-training Legend and guide dog owner Heather Siewruk with her guide dog Susie. Everyone enjoyed the delicious refreshments and had a go at ‘guess how many sweets are in the jar’. Sue Fricker, leader of 5th Ivybridge Rainbows, commented: “Rainbows promise to be kind

and helpful and the girls were very keen to raise as much money as possible to support the incredible work that Guide Dogs do. “The aim was to raise enough money to sponsor the training of a guide dog puppy for a year. The final total raised, however, was over £700, which far exceeded our expectations, and means we can sponsor two guide dog puppies which is fantastic!” Pam Gratton said: “It was brilliant watching the girls complete their challenge and I was really impressed by their efforts to support Guide Dogs.”

New, friendly faces await to give you a warm welcome at Footnote, the independent footwear shop in Glanvilles Mill in Ivybridge

Best foot forward at Footnote “I SHOPPED here myself and liked what was sold so much I bought the business,” said Pat White, paraphrasing the famous 80’s catchphrase of Victor Kiam. Pat and sister-in-law Rose Clapcott are the new owners of Footnote, the independent shoe shop in the centre of Ivybridge. They have already stamped their own style on the shop, with a complete change to the layout to make it more open, lighter and welcoming, and have exciting plans for the future. The have been keen, though, to ensure all the positive attributes of the shop remain, such as the extensive range offered and value for money prices, and intend adding new ranges and services. Building on its reputation for it’s excellent range of ladies and men’s shoes, Pat and Rose are keen to offer the same for all the family, so are introducing more footwear for children – they have introduced Geox children shoes

for their quality and fit – teens and young people. “We have a tremendous range of footwear to offer, including formal, casual and party shoes, boots, trainers, slippers, gardening shoes and wellies,” says Rose. “We think local people will be hard pressed to find a shoe shop close by stocking such a diverse range of footwear, and at prices to suit all purses.” The right fit is crucial for comfortable footwear, and Pat and Rose will offer a full fitting service from October when Rose completes the final part of the assessment to become fully qualified. Plans for the future include continually updating ranges so that current trends are reflected in the shop, a Facebook page to engage with customers and a new website. But for now, Pat and Rose want to stress to local people that affordable fabulous footwear for all the family is available in the heart

LEGO LANDS AT THE LIBRARY Thanks to the Friends of Ivybridge Library, lego is now available in the library to use for the children’s story reading time. Play has been shown to improve creativity, problem solving skills, memory, language and attention span. It encourages children to experiment, create words and rhymes, learn new vocabulary and practice letters and numbers using lego bricks,

developing the foundation of early literacy skills in young children. Friends of Ivybridge Library also raised funds for a new settee in the children’s area so that it’s more comfortable for parents to read with their children. The Friends group hold a range of events to raise money to support the library and hope the community will continue to support its fundraising efforts.

Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council An Invitation from Ivybridge Town Mayor, Cllr Karen Pringle

2014 marks the fifth anniversary of our Christmas Day parties at The Watermark, and it’s my pleasure to once again extend the Town Council’s warm invitation to those who are elderly and/or alone to spend their Christmas Day with us at The Watermark. We will, of course, again need the help of the wonderful community here in Ivybridge to ensure this year’s event continues to be as good as previous years – businesses may like to make donations or individuals or groups might like to consider volunteering on the day to help with serving our guests, giving lifts etc. Last year, we were able to benefit from the free magic show from Christophe Lombardi, so if you can offer your services please contact us. If you, or someone you know, is dreading the thought of a solo Christmas Day then please do get in touch – to book a place contact the Town Hall on 01752 893815. Alternatively, if you wish to discuss how you could contribute to this really worthwhile event please contact the Town Hall and ask to speak with Julie, or drop into the Information Centre at The Watermark. If you have been hesitant about attending, please don’t worry – with the help of Ivybridge Ring and Ride and Ivybridge Caring we can accommodate your transport requirements and any other support you might need. Do join us on Christmas Day this year and be amongst Ivybridge Friends. Best wishes Karen Pringle

Youth services

Many of you will know that the Devon County youth service is closing in Ivybridge from October 2014. We would like to thank the youth workers for the services they have provided for the town over the years and wish all of them well for the future. Cllr Ray Wilson, of Ivybridge Town Council, has been hosting meetings to try and see what service can be offered after the end of September and it has been agreed that the Town Council will continue to support the very popular youth nights, at the Leisure Centre, which run from 7pm until 9.30pm every Friday evening. These are aimed at young people aged from 13-17 and cost £2 per session but the support from the Town Council will enable Tone Leisure to recruit staff to ensure that the events can continue. We all hope that arrangements can be made to keep these going beyond March 2015 and we will be searching for grants/sources of funding for the future. In terms of the Youth Venue itself the building will be in use during the day and then still be available for youth activities in the evening. Discussions are still ongoing to see what can be offered with the Youth Trustees working hard with Devon County Council to finalise options. Volunteers are seeing what can be done and if any young people who had been volunteering before with youth nights want to contact us to get involved then we would be delighted to hear from you. Young Devon is also concerned that its Young Carers’ Group needs a venue and drop-in counselling services have stopped, but again with the support of local voluntary groups, along with our County and District Councillors working with the Town Council we believe that those services can continue. Health, beauty, fitness & wellbeing Exercise key to managing arthritis BY NIKKI SMITH, MCSP South Hams Physio

We’ve all been enjoying the Indian summer – I wish it would last until Christmas – but realistically the weather will change and with this, many of our clients find their arthritis ‘playing up’. Although there is little scientific evidence for this, some link it to the change in air pressure affecting the arthritic joint pressure, causing discomfort. It appears to happen in some cases, but not others. Arthritis means ‘inflammation of the joints’. There are some 10 million people in UK with arthritis. It can cause stiffness and painful swelling in joints. Arthritis can affect people of all ages, young and old alike. There are over 100 joint conditions which are covered by the term arthritis, including some soft tissue diseases.

Osteoarthritis, often known as ‘degenerative joint disease’ or ‘wear and tear’, is the most common type, followed by rheumatoid arthritis and gout. Most of us over the age of 30 will have some wear and tear in our joints, but it’s not arthritis until it displays inflammatory signs and symptoms. Different types of arthritis are caused by different factors. • Genetics – it can run in families • Some types of arthritis are more commonly found in women and some in men • Some types of arthritis start later in

life, whereas some types commonly start in young adults • Some injuries, infections or allergies can trigger some types of arthritis • Lifestyle, including diet and smoking, can be significant contributory factors to arthritis Physiotherapy plays an important role in managing arthritis. RANGERS Thank you - especially to our volunteers - says DNPA Community Ranger Ella Briens

We recently finished two days of important scrub clearance work on archaeological features - considered critically in need of clearing. This work included removing gorse, slashing and bruising bracken and exposing the features beneath using hand tools such as pruning saws, loppers and hazel sticks. This was labour intensive, but the results looked great, the weather was kind and we also enjoyed plenty of tea and biscuits to keep us going! We were working amongst prehistoric settlements on Wigford Down, near Cadover Bridge, and cleared two hut circles. Then, above Corringdon Ball, South Brent, we finished clearing a double stone row. These features now look prominent again in the surrounding landscape - brilliant! It was also refreshing to get out into the quieter areas of the moor, enjoy the amazing views from these locations and meet people that wanted to help Dartmoor. The sites were chosen in co-ordination with our National Park Authority Archaeologist Andy Crabb and the workforce included National Park and National Trust Volunteer Wardens and recruits that had answered our requests for help either from our web pages or local posters. We have a number of other sites that we would like to restore and are planning two further local work party days on the 22 and 23 November 2014. We also have other volunteering opportunities on our web pages. If you think you might like to give us a hand then call Ella 07711104546 or Andrea 07720509270 to find out more. If you are interested in finding out more about the Ranger service first hand, or think you may need their help please, contact them on: Ella – 07711104546 / ebriens@dartmoor.gov.uk Andrea – 07720509270 / aroberts@dartmoor.gov.uk 30

Couple who now have no worries about providing for their disabled daughter ADVERTISING FEATURE

Plympton couple David and Janet Halifax have cared for their disabled daughter Emma ever since she was born 34 years ago. But with both David and Janet now retired and David suffering ongoing health problems, the couple knew they needed to ensure Emma was provided for in the future. David said: “We had been thinking about sorting out our wills for some time, but had never quite got round to it. Then a friend recommended us to David Richardson of Richardsons Legal Services. “He drew up special Wills for both Janet and I with a Disabled Trust in each Will. This ensures that if anything should happen to us, the Disabled Trust will provide funds for Emma which will be administered by the trustees, our older daughter Lisa and her husband Shaun. “The Disabled Trust also has the additional advantage that funds can be released to support

Emma, without affecting any state benefits she may be receiving,” he added. Janet said: “David Richardson could not have been more helpful. Nothing was too much trouble for him. He fully understood our situation, advised us of the best way forward and explained everything very clearly. He also provided us with a fixed price for the work involved, which meant there were no hidden extras.” Frustrated by the lack of activities for adults with learning

difficulties, David and Janet launched the All Stars Theatre Group 10 years ago. The group of adults aged between 20 and 60 plus meets regularly for rehearsals and perform at a variety of events each year, including two special theatre-based shows. They invited David Richardson and his partner Alison to their 10th anniversary show and David was so impressed that Richardsons Legal Services is now sponsoring the All Stars Theatre Group. David Richardson said: “The show was absolutely fantastic. Some of the members of the group have difficulty speaking, yet they danced and sang and told jokes. “The group is a very worthy cause and they have difficulty finding funding, despite the fact they have 200 adults with learning difficulties on their waiting list. I was delighted to offer my support and a share of our profits will now go to the group to help them provide this fantastic service and to continue to put on shows.”

MAKE A DIFFERENCE This year’s Health and Well Being Fair is titled ‘Make A Difference’ and has been extended in order to showcase more of Ivybridge’s groups and associations. As well as seeing the wealth of opportunities that are available in the town, you will also be able to get advice and maybe even sign up to volunteer. Confirmed attendees so far include Contact the Elderly, Good Night Baby, Devon Senior Voice, U3A Ivybridge, Bee Healthy Bee Beautiful, Forever Living, the Stroke Association and Ivybridge Caring. The Watermark are supporting the event by showing Pay it Forward in the afternoon. The film is based on the idea of repaying favours for others, thus developing a network of good deeds. The Health and Well Being “Make A Difference” Fair is on Wednesday, 22 October, 10am-7pm in the Library and 10am-1pm in Stowford Hall.

I don’t have a Lasting Power of Attorney, what can go wrong? by SELENA AYLETT LLB Wills & Trusts Expert

If you lose capacity and don't have a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) then... 1. Someone will apply to the Court of Protection to be given the power to make your decisions for you. This will involve Court and Legal fees as well as delays and enormous stress on your family. 2. The “person” who is appointed could be your Local Authority. 3. If there is a dispute, you will probably have to pay the large legal bills. 4. The person who is appointed as your Deputy will probably be subject to restrictions and there is a Supervision fee that you will have to pay. 5. If a professional deputy such as the Local Authority or a Solicitor are appointed, you will have to pay their fees. If you are afraid of creating an LPA, remember that it involves a chat, some advice and then just signing some forms, all over a cup of tea. Call me today, get the forms done, and get rid of the stress!

PROUD LAURA STUNNED BY AWARD An Ivybridge teacher who has worked tirelessly for a charity which aims to stamp out late detection of breast cancer after being diagnosed with and treated for the disease five years ago is the 2014 West Country’s Pride of Britain Fundraiser of the Year. Stowford teacher and CoppaFeel fundraiser Laura Plane was one of four inspirational regional fund raisers short-listed for the award. Wayne Sleep, who chose the winner, said that Laura had done so much and was giving as much back as possible whilst she was able to. Laura has raised almost £30,000 through running marathons, cycling events, charity balls and auctions, cake sales and football tournaments, all with the invaluable support of husband Jon. The pair are off to Peru later this month to trek Machu Picchu and more money for CoppaFeel. In addition to her charity work and her teaching, Laura is a “boobette”, an ambassador for the charity, visiting schools and businesses to promote the early detection of breast cancer by encouraging women to check themselves regularly. Seth Conway from ITV West Country surprised Laura at work to present her with the award. Laura said: “I am stunned and honoured. It was a real

shock when the TV crew appeared in my classroom and the children were very excited! CoppaFeel do such an important job raising awareness about breast cancer and I am delighted to be part of their team.” Laura, along with the other 16 regional finalists, will head to London this month for the Pride of Britain Awards, where the national winner will be announced.

Can I really avoid nursing home fees?

W

ith increasing media attention being given to ‘Horror Stories’ about Inheritance Tax and nursing home fees, it is no wonder that Brits are becoming increasingly concerned about losing the assets they have worked hard for all their lives. Transferring your property to your children, placing the property in trust or creating a ‘family trust’ can sometimes be helpful, however in the majority of cases it could land you with a large tax bill, usually capital gains tax. It is important to remember that you lose all control over the property. For example, you

may transfer your property to a child only to find that they become bankrupt or divorced – if this happens your home may be sold as part of the bankruptcy or divorce. The regulations regarding nursing home fees are very broad. If your intention is to avoid nursing home fees, the local authority has the power to ignore the transfer or trust you have created. Given the above and the fact that the cost of setting up the unnecessary trust can run into thousands of pounds, it is vital that you take advice from a solicitor or accountant before

More accolades for successful rugby club l rugby

IVYBRIDGE RUGBY CLUB has followed up its success on the pitch last season with a rewarding summer off the field. The Club achieved Ruby Football Union (RFU) accreditation, a prestigious award that not only recognises what the club is achieving in terms of providing rugby opportunities for all age groups, but also enables the club to apply for RFU funding for future projects. The club was also one of the six in the whole country shortlisted for the RFU President’s Award for club management. Club chairman Jim Burns and president Alan Knight were invited to Twickenham for the day as a result, and, while Ivybridge didn’t emerge as overall winners, it was an extremely rewarding and productive experience in terms of taking the club forward. “After our highly successful season last season, we are really excited about making the most
