NEW SEATS COMMEMORATE THE FALLEN New tree seats with designs that commemorate those who fought in the two World Wars are to be installed in Fore Street. The town council (with contributions from the district and county council) have commissioned the benches, which will be installed outside Lawsons. They are due to be installed the week commencing 19th October, and the Royal British Legion plan to mark this occasion at 11am on Poppy Appeal Launch Day, Friday, 23rd October. ‘EXTREME’ READING CHALLENGE Reading got off to a flying start at Stowford School this September, as staff launched their extreme reading photo competition and their new school Booktrack award scheme. Adults and children have been challenged to find a really unusual place to read their book and send in a photo. With prizes up for grabs in each year group for the most extreme place to read, the entries are starting to roll in, with some really extraordinary photos, including steering a boat and in the swimming pool. The photos will be displayed in the school hall to inspire the chil-

dren to read their books at any time, in any place. Alongside this, the school has introduced its own Booktrack award, which will challenge the children in each year group to read a variety of texts in return for rewards and stickers. The Booktrack “map” is based on the town of Ivybridge and the pupils have been invited to design a cover for the record sheet. The scheme will be managed and led by Jenny Medland, who runs the school library, and Lucy Burrows, a new member of staff, with the invaluable support of Year 6 volunteers.

Local doctors are strongly urging people over 65, and those aged six months to 65 years of age with a serious medical condition, to have a flu vaccination this winter. The vaccination is free on the NHS and clinics will be running at Ivybridge Medical Practice this month (see below). The greatest number of flu cases occur between December and March, and while for most people the flu is just unpleasant, for some it can lead to more serious illnesses, or even death. Saturday flu clinics at Ivybridge Medical Practice are being held on 3rd, 17th and 31st October. î To find out more, visit www.beaconmedical group.nhs.uk
Vote Erme School The Erme Primary School has been shortlisted for the Skipton BS Grassroots Giving initiative, and they need your votes to help them secure much-needed funds. The school is hoping to install a teaching kitchen, so that children can learn the benefits of cooking, and securing a grant will help them achieve the goal. As the town’s smallest primary school, they do not have many parents to vote for them, so they would really like the community to support them and register online votes. Voting closes at 11.59pm on Monday, 12th Ocotber. î Vote at skiptongrg.co.uk - click on ‘2015 Shortlisted Groups’
Christmas Tree Festival A Christmas Tree Festival is taking place at St John’s Church in December, and organisers are inviting local people, organisations and businesses to join them by decorating a tree. The festival, on Saturday 5th and Sunday 6th December, will raise funds for the church, which will be open all weekend for the public to view the trees. î Call Vicki on 07866 855103 to find out more

Poppy Appeal launch
Friends in tune for children’s hospice
The Ivybridge branch of The Royal British Legion will launch this year’s Poppy Appeal on Friday, 23rd October, with a night of entertainment at The Sportsmans Inn. The Mayor will open proceedings, which start at 730pm, and include members of Plymouth Pipe Band, a raffle, an auction and live music.
A delightful evening of music at St Austin’s Priory raised over £800 for Children’s Hospice South West. September Song 5, organised by Ivybridge Friends of Children’s Hospice South West, attracted a capacity audience, which was entertained by Three’s a Chord, the Modbury Ukulele Band and Mackenzie Robinson on the saxophone. The audience enjoyed songs from the shows, sang along with the ukulele band, and enjoyed the reflective sounds of the saxophone. The Friends wish to thank all those who contributed to another successful September Song.
Tee off ‘fore’ Poppy Appeal
To celebrate the opening, they are holding a Family Fun Day on Saturday, 3rd October, from 10am4pm. Everyone is invited to come along to see what is available and meet the staff; there will be fun and activities for youngsters – see page 14 for full details. î Palladium Building Supplies Blair Road, Ivybridge. www.palladiumbm.co.uk

HISTORIANS VERSUS ENGINEER The archaeology of Egypt in the bronze age, circa 2,500BC, was the subject of a fascinating talk by Peter Brooks at Ivybridge Probus Club’s September meeting.
Peter explained that the Egyptians were master builders, with the Pyramids and Valley of Kings probably their best-known building legacy. Learned historians, responsible for much exploration into this, held the belief that the monuments were hand carved using the chipping method; such is the beauty, smoothness and intricacy of the objects, chipping techniques were out of the question. Excavations and an open-minded approach eventually lead to the belief that only gemstones could have been used for cutting the hard igneous rock of which the statues and obelisks were made. Next, Peter spoke about the quarries upstream from Luxor at Aswan. Egyptologist and engineer Reginald Engelbach discovered a 1,200 tonne obelisk cut into the stone of one of the quarries such that it could be levered from its thin stone spine and eventually honed into a perfect square cross section. Peter was given a unanimous vote of thanks by members and answered many questions. The next meeting of the Club will be the first Tuesday in October. REDMOUNT RESIDENTIAL CARE HOME BUCKFASTLEIGH
Am I too old to be adopted? Older children waiting to be adopted are often likely to be in sibling groups or have additional needs and there’s currently a shortage of adoptive parents coming forward. Sadly, sibling groups, those with complex needs and children from black and minority ethnic families are amongst the children who wait the longest to be adopted.
Could you open your heart and consider adopting an older child?

Local health and lifestyle advice Are you confused and fed up with conflicting reports in the media of what is good for you? Should you drink that glass of red wine? Just how many portions of fruit and vegetables is the right amount without worrying about the sugar they contain? Hopefully all this confusing information will be explained at Ivybridge’s own Health and Lifestyle Fayre on Saturday, 17th October 2015. The Fayre will be held from 10.30am to 3pm in the Stowford Suite at The Watermark and is supported by the Town Council. Around 24 health-related organisations will be represented, from acupuncture to dementia, dentistry
to walking for health. There will be lots of help and advice from all sorts of different local sources. There will also be face painting for the children, courtesy of Seamoor Children’s Centre, and local groups such as the Donkey Sanctuary and U3A will be attending. Leading up to the fayre, local primary schools have been invited to select children from Years 2 to 6 to take part in a competition to design a poster for the event. The top three posters will be framed and hung in health centres around Ivybridge and Plympton. The event has been organised by the Patient Participation Group at

THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918
by tony rea
RECOUNTING LIFE IN THE TOWN O OO REMEMBERING THE FALLEN

hen the British army went to war in August 1914 each infantry battalion contained just one machine gun section; comprising two Vickers heavy machine guns. The army also had far too much cavalry. These were about to change. Experience showed that to be really effective machine guns needed to be deployed in much greater numbers and crewed by specially trained officers and men. So, the Machine Gun Corps was formed in October 1915. At about the same time, many cavalry units were dismounted and used as infantry. This included the local Yeomanry regiment. Reginald Sudlow Hawker was a captain in the Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry, a cavalry regiment. Reggie, as he was fondly known, was listed in the 1911 census as a wine merchant. He was the son of Ernest William Hawker, also a wine merchant, and Mrs Alice Hawker. The Hawkers lived at The Chantry – a large house which is still standing near Victoria
Captain Reginald Sudlow (spelt Sydlow on the 1911 census) Hawker, Royal 1st Devon Yeomanry / Machine Gun Corps. Captain Hawker wears the frock coat of the Royal 1st Devons
Park and the entrance to Longtimber Woods. The whole family supported the war effort and when Stowford Lodge opened as a VAD Hospital (in 1917) Reggie’s mother became the Assistant Commandant. When the Devon Yeomanry Regiment was dismounted it seems to have been too much for Reggie Hawker and he volunteered to serve with the newly formed Machine Gun Corps. This was not unusual, many ex-cavalry officers volunteered for the Machine Gun Corps or the Flying Corps. Perhaps these new units were seen as more glamourous or exciting. Just up the road from the Hawkers’ house was Ivybridge station, where John Higman had been the Station Master. His son, Thomas, joined up with the 13th Gloucesters, and Florence Higman worked as the Hawker’s cook at the Chantry. These families, once united by mundane peacetime domestic affairs, became united by tragedy. Reggie Hawker was killed in November 1917 and Tom Higman died in April 1918.
CHRISTMAS AT REDLAKE
A historic local building is being brought to life this Christmas. Redlake, the former clay works between Ivybridge and Bittaford, is hosting a Christmas extravaganza to re-launch the building as a hub for all communities in and around Ivybridge and the South Hams. The building, with its iconic chimney stack, will be dressed for Christmas by the custodians of the building, The Eddystone Trust charity. The festive extravaganza will feature ‘Redlake’s Past, Present and the Future’, a rolling presentation of the history of the building and site, with images showing current and future uses. There will be a children’s section, with workshops and craft activities, an inflatable and of course a very special guest... Other attractions will be a food area and an art gallery.
Organisers are now seeking local artists, crafters, bakers, wood turners, gift wrappers, hobbyists, food producers and more to help them make it a fabulous festive extravaganza for the relaunch of this historic building. The building is now run by the Eddystone Trust and throughout the year it will be host to many different types of events, both for the community and public and corporate bodies. Annette Laurie of Laurie Events & Projects, said: “This is a fantastic building with so much potential. I am so excited about liaising with Eddystone Trust to turn this fantastic, historical, building and large site into a destination.”
î The Redlake Christmas extravaganza is on Sunday, 13th December. Contact annette.laurie@ blueyonder.co.uk, call 07802 896505 or visit www.leapsw.com to find out more
Star gazing pupils go on space odyssey Pupils at an Ivybridge school “travelled into space” to get a close up look at the stars and planets. Year 5 pupils at Stowford School, who have been exploring stars and planets where man has never gone before, got the exciting opportunity courtesy of a visit from Simon Ould’s Space Odyssey Dome. Their Space topic got off to a flying start when they made the most of the opportunity to “travel into space” and take a close up look at the stars and planets that make up our solar system. With the help of images projected onto the inside of the dome, they explored constellations and planet orbits and Simon had plenty of the latest news from space to share. Year 5 teacher, Jayne Bremridge, said: “It was an amazing experience for the children and they were buzzing with ideas and questions as they left the zone. Their inspiration and excitement, as well as their new found knowledge, were evident during their science lesson the following afternoon, so it was a fantastic way to begin our new topic.”

Richard Digance Day Saturday 3 October Richard Digance is an evergreen performer who appeals to all ages, making him still one of Britain’s top comedy and music attractions. Comedian and folk singer Richard is now an accomplished artist and will be exhibiting his paintings at The Watermark from 1pm, with an opportunity to meet the man himself from 5pm until the start of his concert. Richard’s art will be available to purchase on the day. Admission to the exhibition is free. Tickets for his concert at 8pm are £15/£13. Later this month, in time for the Poppy Appeal launch, in an initiative supported by Town, District and County Councillors two new commemorative benches will be located in Fore Street to replace those removed due to damage. The seat pictured on page 3 commemorates WWI and a slightly different design depicts WWII, entitled The Landing.
Car parking The Town and District Councils are trying to see if people can be encouraged to stay longer in the town by offering a new parking fee structure. South Hams District Council will consider a proposal this month for a 50p charge for one hour parking (Glanvilles Mill car park), with Leonards Road car park 50p for one hour but also offering £2 for over an hour (for all day). We appreciate that many people want free parking, but regrettably the District Council has to generate income and even to achieve this proposal it could need some financial support, which has been put in place. For walkers and those who want to visit the shops and enjoy something to eat the new parking charges should offer encouragement for people not to 18

The Pantaloons present Macbeth This is not a story for the fainthearted. It's the story of how old King Duncan died. It's a story of murder and betrayal. It's a story of supernatural sorcery. And it's a story that's going to be retold as you've never seen it before... Taking their cues from film noir, gangland Britain and the clowning tradition (yes, really), the criticallyacclaimed Pantaloons Theatre Company put their own contemporary spin on Shakespeare's most dangerous play. Tragic and hilarious in equal measures, this innovative take on 'The Scottish Play' (Macbeth) features femmes fatale, high-speed chases, killer lines, killer crimes and some seriously weird sisters. Sunday 1 November 7pm. Tickets: £12/£10. Suitable for ages 12+. have to rush back to their cars, but to linger more and enjoy our town. We hope that more people will come into Ivybridge because until the numbers using our shops increase then we are unlikely to be able to attract the type of shops that people say they want. Opening a new shop when footfall/visitor numbers are low is a huge risk so please try to shop local at least once a week and lets help those traders that are here to stay and hopefully attract more…
New councillor and vacancy Gareth Derrick has been Co-opted to represent the Ivybridge East Ward. He completed his career in the Royal Navy two years ago and since then set up a blue cheese manufacturing business (sadly now closed) and developed a role running a commercial dispute resolution business, as an accredited mediator. Playing on Saturday 7 November 8pm The Churchfitters are a folk band like no other. A bass guitar made out of a frying pan. Heartwrenching vocals accompanied by a musical saw. Foot-stompingly fast fiddle mixed with infectious funk-rock bouzouki. And traditional tunes reinvigorated with mesmerising jazz sax. Virtuoso musicians from England and France strut their stuff on a stage that bristles with instruments - adding flute, banjo, dulcimer, tin whistle, guitar, ukulele, stand up dustbin bass and a sackful of percussion to their ensemble. And let’s not forget the unique ‘bing-bong’ machine made out of hack-saw blades. Throw in some exquisite harmonies, a slew of startlingly original songs and a few jokes that create instant rapport and you’ve got a high energy show that always leaves
audiences cheering. How do you adequately describe such a musically diverse, uplifting band? You leave it to Mike Harding, a selfconfessed ‘huge, huge fan’. He calls them 'totally brilliant and beautiful'. Tickets: £12/£10.
Baxter& Blofeld - Rogues on the Road Henry and Peter are back with a brand new show crammed full of even more wonderful (and occasionally outrageous) anecdotes from two extensive careers. Bastians of the beloved Test Match Special with over 80 years in the commentary box and touring the globe between them, Henry and Peter have some tales to tell. They’ve seen plenty of shenanigans so come ready to be shocked and entertained by good men behaving badly Saturday 14 November Tickets: £18.50.
Autumn in the Coffee Shop Following the success of the cooked breakfasts they will be continuing throughout the Autumn. In October your £5 breakfast will also include a regular tea, Americano coffee or orange juice. Enjoy a hot jacket special each day with a choice of winter warmer fillings.
Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council Ward was declared in September. The vacancy will be filled in October, so if anyone would like more information about being a Councillor then please contact the Town Hall or one of the Councillors listed on the website, and we will be pleased to assist.
Behaviour at meetings Recently some controversial planning applications have been considered by the Town Council, and it appears that some members of the public seem to believe it is compulsory to be antagonistic and rude. Councillors are unpaid volunteers, giving up their time to try and represent the community and work within a legal framework. They are not in the pocket of developers,
they are governed by a Code of Conduct and consider each plan on its merits – as Town and District Councillors are required to do. They all have to work within the National Planning Policy Framework so grounds for objection need to be reasoned and coherent – not irrational and insulting. We understand that people are passionate about the town – as are we, but this doesn’t excuse bad behaviour. Ivybridge Town Council does its best to accommodate those who wish to make their point at meetings. There is a procedure, although all Chairmen try to adapt it to accommodate those attending where they can (especially where people are unfamiliar or nervous when speaking in public) but meetings are legally required to be conducted in a certain way, and we would urge those attending to respect the process and make their points clearly and concisely within the permitted three minutes.

well A PAIN IN THE BUM! Sacroiliac dysfunction
Sacroiliac dysfunction is generally more common in the young or middle-aged women. I would personally like to think it is a young women’s problem as I have been suffering with this on and off during my attempts at running, but who am I kidding (middle age is upon me!). Dysfunction in the sacroiliac joint is thought to cause low back and/or leg pain – it may feel similar to sciatica – and generally accounts for up to 25% of back pain. There is often one clear difference with the pain felt from the sacroiliac joint compared to pure back pain and this is that the person can often point directly to the area of pain, which is usually in the buttock area. During assessment of sacroiliac dysfunction the physiotherapist will do a series of tests and if three or more tests are positive this will usually indicate the sacroiliac joint is involved rather than the spine. The sacroiliac joint (right) lies next to the bottom of the spine, below the lumbar spine and above the tailbone (coccyx). It connects the sacrum (the triangular bone at the bottom of the spine) with the pelvis (iliac crest). The joint typically has the following characteristics:

and/or hip and may radiate into groin area. Treatment for this type of dysfunction involves muscle strengthening to improve stability and will usually involve lots of glute (buttock) exercises. Taping of the joint can help symptoms while strength and stability is worked on. • Too little movement (hypomobility or fixation): The pain is typically felt on one side of the low back or buttocks, and can radiate down the leg. The pain usually remains above the knee. Treatment for this type of dysfunction involves mobilisation of the joint by a physiotherapist and mobility exercises to continue at home. Medically, if the symptoms persist injection into the joint can help alleviate pain, but the underlying cause of either hyper or hypo mobility needs to be addressed with physiotherapy. Thankfully for me, my physiotherapy colleague Will Hawling is a dab hand at assessing and treating this condition so I can no longer use this as an excuse not to go running!
• Small and very strong, reinforced by strong ligaments that surround it. • Does not have much movement. • Acts as a shock-absorbing structure. While it is not clear how the pain is caused, it is thought that a dysfunction in the normal joint movement may be the culprit that causes sacroiliac pain: • Too much movement (hypermobility or instaS bility): The pain is typically felt in the lower back

Sunny days turning into dark lonely nights? BY YVONNE AND DIANE Ivy Counselling
{|
“Turn the negative into a positive!”
As the nights begin to draw in, many enjoy the closing of curtains, the warmth and perhaps sound of crackling fires, feeling cosy and a sense of safety. However, for others it can be the exact opposite, low mood emerging, feelings of apathy, loss of energy, irritability and losing the capacity to experience pleasures. Some may find themselves withdrawing and not able to fully function, negative thoughts become evasive and difficult to dismiss. Negative thinking devotes itself to defeatist attitudes, unhappiness C and frustration, whilst positive thinking embraces good

As the weather begins to cool and the days begin to draw in, we often believe we should be enthusiastic about the approaching festive season. However for some, the shorter days can lead to a seasonal lowering of mood. For others, busy times and financial pressure can leave them feeling fraught and anxious, R rather than full of joy.

PROTECTING YOUR ASSETS By John Armitage of Richardsons Legal Services
Richardsons Legal Services have recently been holding free seminars to groups of people interested in protecting their assets. Because everyones’ circumstances and aims are different, these seminars are painted in the broadest of strokes, but that notwithstanding, they have informed the public about what steps they may take to ensure that the assets amassed over their lifetime are placed into the hands of their choice (almost universally, family) after their passing. It soon became apparent that many people didn’t know what options they had, and many were labouring under some major misapprehensions. Firstly, about two-thirds of adults have not even taken the first steps to protect their assets – namely, making a Will. Many
ALL CHILDREN DESERVE A LOVING FAMILY AND SAFE HOME Local people who have ever thought about adoption are being urged to consider opening their hearts to an older child, sibling group or those with extra needs, children who wait the longest to find a loving family. Families For Children is using National Adoption Week (19th-25th October) to appeal to people not to hold back so that these children need not wait any longer than necessary to find a safe, secure, loving home. The charity is facing a shortage of people willing to give children a new home, as potential adopters are failing to come forward because it has been widely reported that there are fewer young children and babies available to adopt.
people think that their assets will automatically go to their spouse or children. Wrong! If you do not make a Will, the government will make one for you. It has it’s own strict set of rules, which may not be what you would choose. This could put your loved ones into a vulnerable position Secondly, people rarely count themselves as an asset – even though it is they who have made the family fortune, control it, and distribute it. It could be strongly argued that their person is a very important asset, and that it needs
However, there are still many ‘hard to place’ children desperate to find a family. These are sibling groups, older children and those with special needs. There are people out there who have the skills or the will to give these children a home, claim them as their own and give them a family they deserve, and FFC is urging those people to come forward. FFC is holding a special event at the Rolle Building, Plymouth University, on Wednesday 21st October 5-7pm, where people can see how the charity prepare and support people who adopt through them. î Families For Children: 01364 645480. www.familiesforchildren.org.uk
it’s own protection. A Lasting Power of Attorney would give someone the power to speak for them if they were not able to speak for themselves. An Attorney could have wide-ranging powers, from paying your bills right up to making decisions about life-saving medical procedures Thirdly, many people do not know that by creating a Home Protection Trust, they can ringfence their assets against many unforeseen circumstances that would otherwise attack their estates. RANGERS Catch up time Now is the chance to do jobs that have been on the back burner, says DNPA Ranger Ella Briens Now that summer has drawn to an end we are busy catching up with jobs that have been put ‘on the back burner’ whilst we have been helping visitors, advising campers, attending local shows, leading guided walks and clearing litter from busy sites. Recently, I have also been working on activities with our Junior Rangers (12-15 year olds). After they had completed conservation tasks and helped at local shows it was time to explore another aspect of Dartmoor, and we cycled the Granite Way from Meldon reservoir to Lydford Castle and back. It is a fascinating route and not too steep for those who are looking for an off-road route for all of the family. Back to the south of the moor... We are now gradually catching up with the local paths that we clear and sorting out other rights of way issues with contractors and volunteers. We have also started our next programme of volunteering activities on archaeological sites. We had a great couple of days back in August, despite the torrential rain, with an excellent turnout of volunteers (sorry we cannot help the weather!). Our Archaeologist Andy Crabb is thrilled that we have almost completed the whole multiple stone row site – he can’t believe it! Volunteer We have some more days planned – the next one is Wednesday, 7th October. We will be clearing vegetation from around the remaining stones that form the multiple stone rows near Glasscombe corner. We are usually on site from 10am until 3pm and use hand tools to carefully remove the vegetation so that these features become prominent in the landscape once more. If you would like to join us then please get in contact to book and get all the details (so we know how many biscuits to bring!). It is always an interesting day – Andy gives an intriguing insight into the local archaeology that is on Ivybridge’s doorstep. Do get in contact if you would like to join us on the 7th, or would like more information about other volunteering opportunities or our Junior Rangers programme. If you are interested in finding out more about the Ranger service first hand, or think you may need their help please, contact them on: Ella – 07711104546 / ebriens@dartmoor.gov.uk Andrea – 07720509270 / aroberts@dartmoor.gov.uk

PUB CRICKETERS’ TOUGH SEASON l cricket A pub cricket team has raised over £1,000 for charity following its debut season playing league cricket. The Old Smithy pub cricket team marked the achievement with an awards night held at the pub. The team had a tough introduction to the rigours of league matches, managing just a single victory all season. Nevertheless, the purpose of the venture was to have some fun and raise money for Guide Dogs for the blind and so far, the amount raised totals over £1,000 thanks to the generosity of players and supporters. At the awards evening, Josh Zimmerman scooped two of the three major awards, but special mention must go to Kenny Cole for receiving the less prestigious ‘Blowers’ award for a complete inability to correctly put on a pair of cricket pads! The team plan to continue next season and possibly introduce a Sunday team to help raise even more funds for a worthy cause.
