Show jumpers at Ivybridge Community College are celebrating after qualifying for the national schools’ finals this month. The team of Courtney Fletcher, Ellie Smart, Caitlin Johns and Grace Dahle finished in second place in a competitive class of school teams

from all over the South West. Caitlin and her pony Tim were second individually in a class of over 70 riders, and also qualify as an individual for the championships. The college entered three teams in the different height classes at the

POPPY APPEAL LAUNCH

RNIB CELEBRATES 30 YEARS IN TOWN

This year’s Ivybridge Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal will be launched on Friday, 27th October, at 8pm at The Exchange. The evening, being held in conjunction with St Luke’s Hospice, will include horse racing and a raffle. All proceeds will be shared between the two good causes.

The Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) transcription service is celebrating 30 years in Ivybridge in November. Located on Davids Lane, the service provides specialist audio books, magazines, braille, large print, large print music and tactile diagrams to blind and partially-sighted people throughout the United Kingdom. Each month, over 4,000 pages of print are transcribed, over 50,000 talking book CDs are scanned and more than 16,000 memory sticks are sent out. The team of five staff and over 120 volunteers scan and edit books for braille, input music notation, check audio and read books and magazines in purpose-built studios. If a blind or partially-sighted person can’t read something and it’s not available in the library they can send it to Ivybridge and it is made accessible, tailored to the individual’s need.

Over the years, the service has developed to keep abreast of new demands and new technology. This year is no different, as it is expanding again to include the delivery of RNIB Talking Books on memory stick. About 600 USB sticks arrive per day, with the old titles being deleted and new books copied on to them. Gill Cowsill, the manager of the service, said: “We are just beginning to build a team of volunteers to help us with this challenge, so there are lots of ways people can get involved. “We are grateful to Hayman Joinery who have supplied us with wooden racks to process the USBs, to all the staff at the Ivybridge postal delivery office who help us with our enormous post each day and to members of Ivybridge Lions who packed over 11 crates, a total of 770 USB sticks.” î If you would like to volunteer, call 01752 690092 or email ivybridge transcription@rnib.org.uk

An invitation from the Mayor, Cllr Anthony Khong 2017 marks the 8th anniversary of our Christmas Day parties at The Watermark and it’s my pleasure to once again extend the Town Council’s warm invitation to those who are elderly and/or alone to spend their Christmas Day with us at The Watermark. If you, or someone you know, is dreading the thought of Christmas Day on their own, please do get in touch. To book a place contact the town hall on 01752 893815. If you have been hesitant about attending, please don’t worry – with the help of Ivybridge Ring and Ride and Ivybridge Caring we can accommodate your transport requirements and any other support you might need. Of course, we will again need the help of the wonderful community here in Ivybridge to ensure this year’s event is as good as previous years – businesses like Gribbles and Friary Mill, who have very generously made donations, as have other local suppliers. We absolutely depend on all our generous benefactors to make this event a success. Individuals or groups might like to consider volunteering on the day to help with serving our guests, giving lifts etc. We are hugely grateful to those, like Cllr Ray Wilson who (with his wife Jan) spend most of Christmas Day in the kitchen cooking the meal, to Tony Goldsmith who comes up with a new table quiz every year and to the students of Ivybridge Community College who kindly provide a beautiful array of gifts. IVYBRIDGE CARING WELCOME THEIR NEW CHAIRMAN Lesley Hughes is the new chairman of Ivybridge Caring. Elected to the role at the group’s AGM in July, Lesley is known to many through her role as Ivybridge Town Council’s town clerk, a position she has held since 2001. South Hams CVS originally

approached council some nine years ago to see if there was interest in having a caring organisation in Ivybridge, and Lesley worked with Carol Beeson and Frances Green to see if there was sufficient interest and the necessary volunteers to make it work.

She is delighted that the organisation has been so successful, her only disappointment being that while she is still working as clerk she won’t be able to volunteer as much as her predecessors. However, Lesley intends to be at as many events and meetings as she can.

SURVEY REPLIES DIRECT THE NEXT ACT OF COMMUNITY ART PRODUCTION Ivybridge Community Arts is leading a project to celebrate the centenary of the end of the Great War. They want to devise a piece of community theatre using ideas, family stories, mementoes, letters, poems and so on, all contributed and suggested by local people. They are also putting together an exhibition of artefacts to run alongside the production. The group was bubbling over with ideas – too many – so it sent

out a short survey to see what everyone else was interested in. Respondents told them to focus on Ivybridge – life in the town, returning home to Ivybridge, the stories of those lost to the town and of their families. As well as incorporating the ideas identified by the survey, the group will also include ideas and information about the many other aspects that it listed – such as food, entertainment, prisoners of war

and the role of women. The group would like to hear from anyone who has an artefact that they would like to share. The group’s next meeting is in the Henlake Room at The Watermark at 7 pm on 28th September, when it will discuss the “hidden stories” of the end of the Great War. î If you are interested in taking part, or have ideas to share, or a suggestion for the exhibition, email ivybridgecommunityarts@gmail.com

SIBLINGS COULD BE SEPARATED IF ADOPTIVE FAMILIES CAN’T BE FOUND A local independent adoption charity is appealing for potential adopters who will consider adopting a sibling group to come forward. Families for Children warn that if families cannot be found soon it is

likely that brothers and sisters will be separated. Research indicates that it’s often in the best interests of the children that they stay together, as separation can result in further traumatic experiences and anxiety.

Smart meters are a new type of gas and electricity meter that replace your current meters. A smart meter will record your energy use and send readings directly to your supplier so you will no longer have estimated bills. Every household will be offered a smart meter by 2020. You do not have to accept the offer, but a smart meter can help you to save money: • Your bill will be based on actual readings and not an estimate. This avoids the nasty surprise of a big ‘catch-up bill’ after a few months of bills estimated too low. • If you want, you can have an in-home display unit which will tell you how much electricity and gas you are using in ‘real time’. It also shows your usage by week, month and year enabling you to see where you can save energy. • In the future, smart meters will allow householders to choose a ‘time of use’ tariff where the price of electricity will vary throughout the day depending on how much demand there is across the country, enabling us to change our behaviour and use energy at cheaper times if we can. You may have heard that current smart meters are not compatible across different fuel suppliers – this is true for the ‘1st generation’ meters; if you switch supplier they revert to being a standard meter. In 12-18 months, updated communication technology will resolve this, and they will be compatible without needing to be physically replaced. Next year, the ‘2nd generation’ meters will be launched and they will be compatible with all suppliers. If you would like a smart meter you can contact your energy supplier to find out if they are fitting them in your area. The installation will take 2-3 hours, and the engineer will show you how to set it up. Susan Wills Pope cheered up a dismal, wet evening for the members of Ivybridge Flower Club with a demonstration titled “sizzling September”. Susan has florist shops in and around Paignton and her flowers were beautifully conditioned and of the most gorgeous colours, which she mixed and matched in her differing arrangements with considerable skill. The first play, The Fat Lady Sings in Little Grimley by David Tristram, is a return to the hilarious ‘Little Grimley’ sagas. The querulous quartet – Gordon, Margaret, Joyce and Bernard –

are back to tackle yet another threat to their survival, this time in the shape of a rival am-dram, newly-formed in their village, determined to upstage them with their award-winning musical. The second offering is ‘Whodidit?’ by Neil Harrison – an engaging spoof on the country house murder mystery story, set in the 1920s. With a nominal setting, the focus is mainly on the richly-drawn characters. It is absurd, mysterious and packed with daft gags – a treat for everyone! At St Johns the Evangelist, Blachford Road, Ivybridge. Starting November 1st at 7pm Pilgrim takes a different approach to other Christian programmes. It approaches the great issues of faith not through persuasion, but participation in a pattern of contemplation and discussion with a group of fellow travellers. It starts at the very beginning and assumes very little understanding or knowledge of the Christian faith. The course is just six sessions in duration: Session One: Do you turn to Christ? Explores the attraction of Jesus Christ. What happened when people met him? What would happen if you did? Session Two: Do you believe and trust in God the Father? What do Christians believe about God? This session uses the Old Testament to look at how God is like a Father.

Session Three: Do you believe in his Son Jesus Christ? Looking in more detail at who Christians believe Jesus is, this session looks at what Jesusâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; baptism reveals about his identity. Session Four: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? Uses the story of Pentecost to show how Christians believe the Holy Spirit makes Jesus present today. Session Five: Do you repent of your sins? Looks at what Christians call sin: that inbuilt tendency to get things wrong and Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s great desire to put things right. Session Six: Do you renounce evil? Explores the reality of evil, and how the Christian faith invites us to set the moral compass of our lives.

MULTI-SPORTS SURFACE IN VICTORIA PARK A new community sports playground in Victoria Park was officially unveiled by Mayor Cllr Anthony Khong on the first day of the Autumn term. The synthetic multi-sports surface cost £40,000 to install, with money raised through three key partners – Friends of Erme Primary School, Devon County Council and Ivybridge Town Council. Pupils from Erme Primary School, county cllr Roger Croad and others attended the opening. The facility will be used during the school day by the children at the Erme but when the children are not using the sports area it can be used by the community at large.

Facebook/Google+: I like cake. Twitter: I’m eating #cake. LinkedIn: My skills include cake eating. Instagram: Here’s a vintage photo of my favourite #cake. Pinterest: Here’s a cake recipe. It’s easy to see that all these platforms provide an excellent opportunity to share news, products and services; most importantly, with a tightly-targeted audience, that can include both current and potential customers. Unlike other channels, social media provides an opportunity to engage in conversation. These “chats” build trust long before any meeting takes place, as well as cementing relationships with loyal customers. Commercially, an active social media presence can improve your search engine rankings as well as 20:37:04 maximising your advertising budget. But… it would be silly to ignore the downsides. It can be difficult to gain visibility in a noisy marketplace. To do it properly, creating posts that grab attention, requires time, an ongoing commitment and can be addictive. Not everyone uses social media. So, crucially, it’s important not to participate just because everyone else is. It has to be right for you – and the right platform. Facebook is essential for small business marketing. Counsellors and coaches share inspirational quotes and advice. Charities quickly and easily publish their events to a widening audience. Contests and giveaways attract visitors to your page. Instagram or Pinterest are the perfect visual choice for builders, crafters or artists to share professional and captivating images of their work. Another year of continued success Six years ago, we launched Ivy Counselling and we are both wondering where those years have gone. We are absolutely delighted with our success and being in a position to have helped so many clients through unsettling periods, helping them to make positive change in their lives. We all have times in our lives when we find it difficult to cope so the idea that counselling is mainly for people with mental

health problems is a few decades out of date. People contact us for counselling from across the whole social spectrum, including social workers, police officers, directors, managers, nurses, parents and students, to name a few. SUPPORT FOR ASTHMA SUFFERERS By Tiffany Armitage Over five million people in the UK are currently receiving treatment for asthma, with one in 11 of these being children, according to the charity Anxiety UK. They also report that 69% of people with asthma consider stress as a trigger for them. This trigger is thought to occur because the stress hormones that

are released for the “fight and flight response” create physical responses in the body. These responses, such as an increased breathing rate and tense muscles, put asthma sufferers at higher risk of all their usual symptoms (such as tightness in the chest). As well as being a trigger, asthma can also contribute to anxiety and depression, due to the long-term stress of suffering from this persistent illness. There is a large body of research that demonstrates the effectiveness of hypnosis, guided imagery and relaxation in reducing asthma in both adults and children. A review in 2000 of scientific papers showed that studies consistently demonstrated an effect of hypnosis on asthma. Although more research is needed, the studies showed that its efficacy is enhanced in subjects where the practitioner is experienced, when it is administered over several sessions, and when it is reinforced by patient self-hypnosis. >

LIBRARY LAUNCHES FUN PALACE Ivybridge Library is launching its first-ever Fun Palace event on Saturday, 7th October. Ensure your children inherit David Richardson, founder of Richardsons Legal Services As we grow older, we start to worry about all the threats which might prevent our children, or other chosen beneficiaries, from inheriting one day. We may worry that we have left someone out of our Will who is entitled to a reasonable financial provision from our estate when we die; and they may well be entitled under the 1975 Inheritance Act. If we have left any of our children out of our Will, even for very good reasons, they are still entitled to something. An ex-spouse who has not remarried is also entitled to something, and various other classes of people, too. Increasingly, many Wills are challenged these days and just because you have decided to leave everything to charity, for instance, is no guarantee they will get it. If the Will is challenged it is up to a judge to decide how much they will get, and there are no hard and fast rules. You may also worry about the government getting a big chunk through inheritance tax, or losing your home to pay for care fees. Or it could be that a slate may fall off your roof and kill someone and you will be faced with a large claim and no insurance to pay for it. The threats are endless. Most people in retirement begin to think of these things and, although there may not be an answer for every eventuality, it is worth having a free consultation to find out what can be done, particularly by putting assets such as your home into trust to protect it against all unforeseen eventualities and claims under the inheritance act. At the same time, it is worth considering giving someone you trust the legal power to deal with your affairs if you become incapable of looking after things yourself, temporarily or permanently. Also worthy of consideration is a pre-paid funeral plan, which pays for your funeral in advance at today’s prices with no more for your family to pay in the future. Somebody did ask me recently when the litter picking campaign would stop – I replied “when there is no more litter to pick!”. October is the official start of the swaling season on Dartmoor, when farmers, commoners and landowners will burn areas of moorland to encourage new, fresh vegetation to come through and to reduce the amount of gorse. The swaling season runs from now through to the end of March, with most swaling taking place after Christmas. It is done in conjunction with DEFRA and is carefully managed and organised as per the Heather and Grass (Burning) Regulations 1986. We have recently had complaints from horse riders about cars being parked in front of gates, blocking access. For areas such as Harford Moor Gate, where a cattle grid obviously stops animals crossing, cars parked in front of the adjacent gate prohibits access for horse riders and any dog walkers. Please consider where you are parking your car and make sure that gates are kept clear at all times. It can be especially frustrating for the local farmers, who often need access through gates for entry onto their own land to continue their day-to-day work. Erme Valley Harriers athletes who made the trip to Cardiff did very well. Andrew Perry (36.18) was the first Harrier home, closely followed by Craig MacLellan (36.34) and Joe Perry (36.59), who had outstanding runs and achieved personal best times. At the Armada Trail Run, eight Harriers tackled the demanding race, which was made more difficult with rain leading up to the race creating deep river crossings. Neil Holmes was the first Harrier home and was closely followed by Russ Mogridge. Holmes was running his first race for some time due to injury. There was also a fun run, with Harrier Liam Hollows winning the race and Jamie Frost coming second. Some athletes like to run long distances. Mike Hoskin completed a 100-mile run on the North Downs Way (Farnham in Surrey to Ashford in Kent) in 22 hours, 24 minutes and just a few weeks later completed the New Forest Marathon in 3.30.56. Elsewhere, in the ‘Big Day Out’ Dave Church survived ‘The Crossing’ – a 34-mile race across Dartmoor in 7.54.00.
