NEWS Songs for hospice
A jammed-packed Ivybridge Summer Fete, which had over 30 stalls and entertainment for all the family, drew a large community crowd to Glanvilles Mill on 4th September. As well as traders selling quirky and unique products, there was live music, marvellous magic, dancing, face painting and makedo-and-mend workshops. The town crier, and members of Ivybridge Theatre Group in panto costume, greeted visitors to the fete. The fete was supported by Ivybridge Chamber of Commerce, who are working to raise awareness of what the town centre offers to the local community.
ENERGY CHAMPIONS ON MISSION TO REDUCE BILLS Two Ivybridge mums are on a mission to help local people save money on their fuel bills. Katie Reville and Sophie Phillips are energy champions and advisors for new local community energy society South Dartmoor Community Energy (SDCE). The society has been selected to take part in this year’s Big Energy Saving Network and is aiming to help hundreds of people in Ivybridge and across the South Hams to reduce their energy costs this winter. Katie and Sophie have both worked in the energy efficiency sector for many years and aim to deliver lots of outreach events and one-to-one support to local
residents. All the advice is free and impartial and can include home visits if necessary. Help is focussed on supporting people who have not switched suppliers before, who lack internet access, who have health issues or low incomes, and will include practical support to help people reduce their bills. This can include advice on choosing the best energy tariff, help with switching supplier, information about smart meters and details of energy efficiency offers. Katie and Sophie are looking for local community groups and events to attend over the next six months so that they can help as many people as possible, so if
your group, luncheon club or coffee morning would like the team to provide a talk or one-to-one advice session do contact them. Alternatively, Katie and Sophie can provide free and impartial advice on reducing your fuel bills and getting the best from your energy supplier. A programme of drop-in advice sessions is currently being organised and further details will be available at southdartmoor communityenergy.org shortly. To book a talk, visit or to seek advice from your local Energy Champions, call 0800 112 3044 or email katie@southdartmoor communityenergy.org, MondayFriday 9am-5pm.
HERITAGE GROUP RAISE BOUNDARY STONE FROM RIVER ERME A boundary stone, originally sited at the bend of the River Erme below the tennis courts at Erme Playing Fields and reported missing in 1996, has been found. Ivybridge Heritage & Archives Group (IHAG) and Ivybridge Town Council were delighted to discover that the stone has been spotted about 120ft further down
the river from where it was sited. On Wednesday, 31st August, with the help of NRS, the stone was lifted from the river and reerected as close to the original site as possible. Recently, IHAG has been working on identifying, locating and recording all the Ivybridge marker stones. With a small grant
from the Milestone Society, it has repainted the milestone on Exeter Road. In addition, the two local board marker stones, also on Exeter Road, which had gradually been buried over the years, were raised by DCC Ivybridge Neighbourhood Team, and are now standing proudly once more.

St Austin’s Priory hosted its sixth annual September Song, a fund raising concert in aid of Children’s Hospice South West, on 9th September. A large audience enjoyed a selection of songs from Three’s a Chord, a fine performance on the saxophone from Mackenzie Robinson, and the Modbury Ukulele Band raised the roof with a lively selection of popular songs. Organised by Ivybridge Friends of Children’s Hospice South West, just over £1,000 was raised. The Friends Group next event is a Bridge Afternoon on 11th October, at Bittaford Village Hall. Anyone interested in entering teams of four should contact Maggy on 01752 698041.
DAAT funds Runners from across the local area gathered in Cornwood on 5th September at the running injuries prevention workshop held by sports physio Nic Costiff. The workshop was attended by runners of all levels, with the proceeds going to Devon Air Ambulance Trust (DAAT).

Stowford School - Robins class
As part of their ‘Earth and Beyond’ topic, Year 5 pupils at Stowford School were treated to a whirlwind trip through space. Simon Ould’s Space Odyssey Dome took the children on a virtual tour of the International Space Station where they saw how astronauts, including Tim Peake, sleep, exercise and carry out experiments in space. The children had a fascinating experience gazing at the planets of our solar system,
as well as a selection of interesting stars in our galaxy, as they were projected onto the dome around them. Learning new terminology, such as gas giant, red dwarf and their favourite new word spaghettification, the students had a captivating morning. Year 5 teacher, James Nute, said: “It was a stimulating experience for the children, who returned to their classrooms full of enthusiasm and questions about their new topic.”

THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 RECOUNTING LIFE IN THE TOWN O OO REMEMBERING THE FALLEN
W
e can only imagine how difficult life was for those who lived in Ivybridge through the war. Yet, life went on. In fact, for some, the war made for busy times. Stowford Paper Mill had been badly damaged by a fire in 1914, and the top three floors of the Rag Loft had to be re-built. The bell tower was not replaced, and the bell itself was beyond repair, so a smaller bell was brought from the Lower Mill. This was mounted on the side of the new Rag Loft and rang to call workers on and off their shifts. The water turbine also had to be overhauled. Many workers were laid off whilst repairs, estimated at £14,000, were made. In 1916, a major development took place in the Ivybridge area. At a cost of £17,000, the Butterbrook Reservoir near Harford was opened to provide Ivybridge with a sustainable water supply. The reservoir was the officially opened on the 31st May, 1916, by the MP Major Francis Bingham Mildmay, who was home on leave. It came under the auspices of Ivybridge Urban Council.

FIND OUT ABOUT LOCAL SUSTAINABLE TRANSPORT Alternative ways to get around the local area will be showcased at a transport fair this month. Local group PL:21, in conjunction with Sustrans, is holding a Sustainable Travel Fair on Saturday, 22nd October, from 10am1pm in The Watermark. The event will include information stands on local walking and cycling routes, local bus and train services and even low emission vehicles. Exhibitors will include Great Western Railway, Stagecoach, Citybus, British Cycling (Breeze), local outdoor and cycle shops,
Dartmoor National Park and an ecar from Ocean BMW. The event will be attended by MP Gary Streeter, with groups expected to come from Plymouth and South Brent by bike. There will be the opportunity to have your bike looked over by one of the local shops and sit in a new electric BMW. Graham Wilson, who has been organising the event, commented: “We are really looking forward to spreading the word about all the alternative ways to get around our lovely town. “Ivybridge has a growing net-
work of cycle routes and public transport leading to Plymouth, local towns, Dartmoor and the coast. We also want to increase awareness of electric cars and are pleased to be supported by Ocean BMW. “And of course, some say healthy transport equates to healthy lives.” The event is free, and everyone is being urged to attend to find out more about local sustainable travel options and to contribute ideas to encourage more people to walk and cycle in the town. î Contact Graham Wilson on grahamwilson200@gmail.com
DOUBLE BILL CONCERT WILL HELP PROVIDE WATER IN KENYAN DISTRICT A music concert to raise money for an impoverished region of Kenya is being held this month. Money raised at the double bill concert will go to a water borehole project and towards helping farmers with natural farming methods in the Thika province of Central Kenya. Water availability is a severe problem in parts of Thika, and elsewhere in Kenya, and although Kenya’s economy is 6

growing, 42 per cent of the people live on less than $2 a day. Concert goers will be able to enjoy the harmonies of the Modbury Gospel Singers as they perform some of their repertoire of Gospel, folk and traditional songs from different parts of the world, including Africa. South Devon Big Band brings big band jazz in the style of Glen Miller, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Buddy Rich and many more;
music which of course has African origins. There will also be a raffle and a cash bar with light refreshments. The concert is at The Watermark on Saturday, 15th October. Doors open at 7pm, with the concert starting at 7.30pm.
î Tickets: £12 – £8 students and children. Available from The Watermark, by telephone 01752 892220 or online at www.ivybridgewatermark.co.uk
Dementia awareness conference A Dementia awareness conference for local churches and their congregations is taking place in Ivybridge. Remembering Friendship and Faith is on Tuesday, 25th October, in St John’s Church Hall, Blachford Road , 9.30am-12.30pm. The Four Rivers Dementia Alliance, Diocese of Exeter and Churches Together in Devon is holding the conference, aimed at the local church communities, to try and ensure local churches are as dementia friendly and inclusive as possible. With understanding and the right kind of support, people experiencing memory problems and those living with dementia can remain part of church life and keep in touch with activities and the comfort of their Christian faith. This free half day conference is an opportunity to gain new insights into dementia and a fresh understanding of how to help each other, especially in church settings. There will be information on local activities and support for people living with dementia, and on post-diagnosis support, and a Dementia Friends Awareness Session will be a key part of the morning. Everyone is welcome, but to help keep track of numbers please book your place by calling Joanie Harris, Church and Society, Exeter Diocese on 01392 294940 or by emailing Joanie.harris@ exeter.anglican.org

turns out that Iolanthe is a fairy (so doesn’t age) and Strephon is “half a fairy” with Iolanthe for his mother and a mere mortal for his father. The Fairy Queen steps in to resolve matters, using her magic to bring about an ending in which everyone inevitably lives happily ever after.
NEWS Funding grants available Local community groups are being urged to apply for funding grants to help make their projects to provide or improve local facilities become a reality. If you would like to make a lasting impact on your local community there are funding opportunities available now through South Hams District Council fund. The council is calling all town and parish councils, together with local voluntary or community groups, to apply for the Community Reinvestment Projects Fund (CRPF). This annual fund is available to any communal project involved in providing, or improving, facilities such as community buildings, gardens, sports facilities or play areas. Previous grants awards have gone towards improving creative play opportunities within a young children’s play park and also the installation of a solar power system to reduce energy bills on a community building. Gardens have also had a makeover, with improvement of paving, shrub beds and benches in a community garden, and the improvement of rural community access of a pathway alongside a river. “We are eager to support local groups and urge them to apply before the closing date of 7th January, 2017,” said SHDC’s portfolio holder for customer first, Cllr Hilary Bastone. George Egg Anarchist Cook If you like food, you’ll like this. On 21 October The Watermark welcomes George Egg Internationally acclaimed comedian George Egg is also a rather fanatical self-taught cook with a somewhat anarchic approach to making meals. As obsessed with culinary matters as he is with comedic ones, and finding himself dissatisfied with the quality and cost of takeaways and room-service meals while touring the stand-up comedy clubs of the world, George embarks on a project to take matters into his own surprisingly capable hands. A surreal and absurd mix of stand-up comedy and striking innovation.

Plymouth Gilbert & Sullivan bring ‘Iolanthe in Concert’ to The Watermark on 22 October. Gilbert and Sullivan’s typically ‘topsy-turvy’ plot sees the pompous peers of the House of Lords falling en masse for the beautiful Phyllis, while she has eyes for the young and handsome Strephon – until she catches him with 17-year-old Iolanthe and refuses to believe him when he claims she’s really his MOTHER! All is explained (just about) when it

Latest news from Ivybridge Town Council CHRISTMAS INVITATION from Ivybridge Town Mayor, Councillor Dave Gray Taylor
“It’s my pleasure to once again extend the Town Council’s warm invitation to those who are elderly, with disabilities and/or alone, to spend Christmas Day with us at The Watermark. “We will, of course, once more need the help of the wonderful community here in Ivybridge to ensure this year’s event is as good as previous years – businesses may like to make donations or individuals might like to consider volunteering on the day to help with serving our guests, giving lifts etc. “We have been so fortunate to have the incredibly generous support of Gribbles Butchers, and many local benefactors over the years, that we hesitate to keep asking those same people, so please consider if you can help. “We are always keen to have live entertainment, as well as bingo, a quiz and Queen’s Speech on the big screen, so if you are a performer and able to spare time on Christmas Day, then we can offer you a free lunch! “Please get in touch, whether you are considering coming along as a guest or can offer help – contact the Town Hall or drop into the information desk at The Watermark. “If you have been hesitant about attending, please don’t worry – we can accommodate your transport requirements and any other support you might need. “Don’t be on your own – we have had guests attend each year and they have now made friends, so ask to sit together. Others are first timers, perhaps recently bereaved, and we always have kind table hosts who can help ensure you are as involved as you want to be. “Join us on Christmas Day this year and be amongst Ivybridge friends.”

in a brief farewell speech, President Michael Greaves highlighted the outstanding service that Philip had given to the club during the course of his membership. The good news was that member Philip Dredge, who had been taken into hospital the previous week, was reported to be home and returning quickly to his normal self. Howard Webster announced that the quiz night will take place on 23rd October at Wrangaton. Lunch was followed by an interesting talk by Peter Brooks, called ’a waste of waste’, which followed the club’s visit earlier this year to the new incinerator at Devonport. His well-developed argument was that waste should make money rather than cost it. He cited what he called the ‘stupid economy’ for the unnecessary and non-recyclable packaging; the manufacturing of disposable items replacing the traditional; and the pollution caused plastics and microbeads. He then turned to the heart of the problem, us! As we are not sufficiently committed to re-cycling,
we cause problems by not separating waste properly, citing examples experienced by the new plant in Devonport.
FLORAL YARNS Chairman Hilary Newcombe welcomed Ivybridge Flower Club members back after their summer break and introduced Alison Penno, area demonstrator from Launceston. Alison’s title was “floral yarns” and each of her arrangements made use of different types of wool; wrapped around containers and spheres, covering tubes used to give the flowers more height and structures adding interest. Her designs ranged from traditional to contemporary and her use of colour throughout was subtle and delightful. She spun yarns about her summer break to Portugal and her various foreign workshops and demonstrations. The club’s next meeting is the AGM, on 10th October, at The Watermark, starting at 7.30pm. RANGERS A time to breath, catch up and plan As the Moor undergoes the spectacular, colourful transition to the new season, it’s a time for the Rangers to take stock... and prepare for winter, says Andrea Roberts
Three local projects need your vote to help them win funds for exciting projects to benefit young people in our community
Autumn is here and Dartmoor takes on yet another beautiful dimension. The leaves are glowing brown, red and yellow and the beautiful heather is having a last burst of colour.
Bags for Help vote open The money raised from the 5p plastic bag charge in Tesco stores is being used to support community participation in the development and use of open spaces. Projects the funds will benefit include volunteer training, physical improvements of open spaces, equipment purchases, community events and sports and leisure activities. Administration of the local funding is being managed by the community charity with a green heart, Groundwork, which specialises in transforming communities and the local environment for the better. Winning projects from round one have received their funding and are underway.
Vote now in round two We are now starting voting for round two. Votes will determine how much each project receives – £12,000 £10,000 or £8,000. The three winning projects are n Ermington School – called Music, mud and mindfulness, it will provide a mud kitchen, an outdoor musical instruments area and a sensory garden. If they come first or second, they could also install an outdoor puppet theatre, more complex outdoor instruments and more tree and shrub planting. n Fit and Fun @Bittaford want to regenerate a multi sports and play area, including providing new equipment for a wider age range of young people and children and replacing worn out items already present. If they came first or second, their
improvements would include more new equipment. n Woodlands Park School – The Come Outside! Project will fund an outdoor classroom with cob and stone oven and seating area, allweather cobbled path, sensory garden, mud kitchen and wild flower bank for insect conservation. If they came first or second, they would install a dry stone wall habitat, a water wall and a climbing area. They’d also like to provide waterproofs for all key stage 1 children so they can go outside in wet weather. HOW TO VOTE Customers can vote in store at Lee Mill from Monday, 26th September. Tokens will be handed out at checkouts and a new voting station will be placed in the store entrance . Your votes will determine how much each project receives (£12,000 £10,000 or £8,000). Bags of help is changing To give customers a say more frequently on where the money goes, the scheme will now be permanently open for applications from community groups. Following a public vote, three projects in each Tesco region will receive a grant each month, with first place receiving up to £5K, 2nd up to £2K and 3rd up to £1K. Applicants need to apply online at www.groundwork.org.uk/Sites/ tescocommunityscheme/pages/Ca tegory/apply-for-a-boh-grant-tes2 Unsuccessful applicants from previous rounds are encouraged to reapply.
The Rowan trees (otherwise known as Mountain Ash) have really enjoyed a bumper crop of bright red berries this year, stocking natures cupboard for hundreds of birds and insects, and the blackberry bushes are producing lots of plump berries for our store cupboards. The summer season has been busy (as always) with more and more people enjoying a “staycation” and hopefully bringing money into the local communities. As usual, with more people can come more problems, such as litter, road congestion and your favourite “quiet spot” being crowded. Thankfully, as far as I’m aware, the moorland areas around Ivybridge are not too “abused” with recreational litter, in contrast to places such as Spitchwick / Newbridge, where over a four day period nearly 44 black bin liners of rubbish was collected by the Ranger team and volunteers. I know that in this area some of this may be down to the fact that there are a lot of “unsung heroes” out and about who, on their daily stroll or dog walk, will pick up any litter that they come across. So a big ‘thank you’, if you are one of these people. You may not think that you are making a difference, but you really are. I was lucky enough to be invited to the launch event of the new 10 year management plan for the Longtimber Woods area beside the River Erme. The sun shone and it was a good turnout of mostly local people interested in finding out what was planned for “their” woodland. This area really is a little jewel right beside Ivybridge and I know is enjoyed by many. Rupert Lane, the woodland consultant who has produced the plan, has been working with the town council for many years on Longtimber Woods and clearly has a real passion for it. On the guided walk around the woods I was able to explain to those present the work the National Park has undertaken within the woods (namely the rights of way) and what our future plans may be to improve the network of paths around the area. With the moors becoming a little quieter, this time of the year is generally when Rangers take stock of their work loads and try to knock off as many Public Rights of Way maintenance issues as possible. Our workloads don’t decrease, but just change focus slightly. This may be hanging new gates, repairing stiles and fingerposts and continuing with the vegetation clearance. Volunteer work programmes for the winter may be looked at and planned, including liaison with the land owners and our own internal departments, including archaeology and ecology. One thing I personally think about this time of the year is starting to dig out my thermals, re-waterproofing my coats and buying new hats and gloves ready for the winter months and the delightful weather that Dartmoor loves to throw our way.
If you are interested in finding out more about the Ranger service first hand, or think you may need their help please, contact them on: Ella – 07711104546 / ebriens@dartmoor.gov.uk Andrea – 07720509270 / aroberts@dartmoor.gov.uk

well HEALTH HORROR STORIES BY CLAIRE MORGAN-HUGHES Devon Fit Camp
The horrors of Halloween are here again on 31st October, and I want to use this scary time of year to tell people some of the more frightening facts about obesity and poor health. The facts on obesity are enough to give anyone nightmares, but if we’re going to get fitter and healthier, we have to face the demons head-on. We are getting more aware of just how unhealthy our lifestyles have become, but there’s a lot more to understand about diet, fitness and what we can do to get healthier. If you’re thinking of joining a local fitness class, I hope you don’t think all fitness professionals are scary people – we really do just want to help! We offer free taster sessions so you can meet us, enjoy a training session and meet the team before you commit to a D membership. Visit our website to book your place.

Frightening facts... • Sugar is as dangerous to our health as tobacco. Due to the high hidden content and food companies using 257 different names for sugar in their ingredients you can consume up to 12 grams of sugar daily without even realising. Sugar intake of this proportion is driving the obesity epidemic and causing health issues from heart disease to diabetes. • Obesity in the UK it has trebled (and doubled worldwide) since 1980. One billion people, including around 155 million children, are now obese. • Obesity costs the NHS £5.1 billion a year (and the UK economy an estimated £20 billion a year). This could bankrupt the NHS if it continues. If you’d like to know more about these Halloween health horrors, or would simply like to know how to get started to a healthier lifestyle, please get in touch. Claire x

well Physiotherapy for sports injuries in Ivybridge BY NIC COSTIFF Sports injury specialist
Taking part in sports and activities has many health benefits, including weight management, bone health, reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes among many others. An active lifestyle and participation in sports also brings with it an increased risk of injury. This can vary from a mild contusion or sprain, to a complete ligament rupture that requires surgery and rehabilitation. Nic Costiff specialises in the treatment and prevention of sports injuries and is delighted to announce the opening of his new sports injuries clinic within Ivybridge Leisure Centre. Nic has a unique approach to treating sports injuries, combining his career as a Royal Marine physical training instructor and rehabilitation specialist with evidence-based physiotherapy techniques to ensure that each
client gets a comprehensive treatment plan to get back to their sport(s) quickly and reduce the recurrence of injury. In order to achieve success in any target activity, a comprehensive rehabilitation programme should address all of the performance components of that activity or sport. Progressing the athlete from initial injury through to sport conditioning commonly takes place in three phases. Phase 1: Biomechanical movement screening Sports injury, whether as a result of trauma (ie a football / rugby tackle), or overuse injury, often results in altered movement patterns as a protective mechanism in order to prevent further injury. However, this new movement pattern can often prevent optimal movement long after tissue healing. Therefore, initial physiotherapy treatment involves reducing pain and unwanted movements or stiff joints and facilitating nor-

mal patterns of movement at a low level. There is a strong respect for pathology, tissue healing and optimal loading. Phase 2: Corrective conditioning This phase builds upon restored movement patterns and adds a functional component to rehabilitation. Your core stability, proprioception and balance will be challenged in order to replicate your activities and sports, and a comprehensive resistance training programme will be prescribed to maintain stability and strength at each joint. Phase 3: Full body integration This level returns the healed and pain-free client to full-body integrated movements and sportsspecific strength and conditioning. Functional strength training is primarily guided by the body’s response to increasing speed, load, time-under tension, rest periods and periodised programming. Furthermore, this phase integrates whole body movement patterns and explores the sporting needs of the athlete to achieve complete recovery, such as development of maximum strength, dynamic stability, and explosive power. Nic has worked at all levels of sports, from local rugby teams to the London 2012 Olympic games. He has extensive military physiotherapy experience and has also played sports to a high level. If you need any advice regarding your sports injury or training, then call Nic at the Ivybridge clinic on S 07870 655816 or 01752 837724
BY DEBBIE BAKEWELL Side By Side Counselling It is so rewarding to help clients put aside their mask and acknowledge that ‘YES’ they do matter, and ‘YES’ their mental wellbeing does count, to visibly see the difference in someone who has accessed counselling, and to witness the knock-on effect this has on their life. I offer a FREE first session for you to see how easy it can be to talk, without the fear of being judged. I will give you the space to collect and make sense of your thoughts and feelings in a safe, confidential space. I work with all ages involving a wide range of issues, including depression, anxiety, anger management, relationship issues, low self esteem, bullying, bereavement, eating disorders and suicidal thoughts. I believe that counselling should be available to all – and when that person is ready – not dependant on a waiting list. This is reflected in my fees – with some concessions available. You may not think so right now, but you hold the key to unlocking change/acceptance of how things are and can be for you. For an informal chat, please do contact me. well ATHLETE’S FOOT BY HELENA HUTT Footcare Southwest
Tinea Pedis, or athlete’s foot, is a common fungal infection of the feet. It is frequently found between the toes, but can occur on the top of the foot or around the edges. It usually presents as red, scaly or blistering rash, and in some cases patients can present with bleeding macerated splits in between their toes. Patients often complain of extreme itchiness. Infection of the sole of the foot can be in patches or affect the entire foot, and the skin can be dry, flaky or cracked, red, sore and irritated. It is usually a mild condition and once correct diagnosis has been made can be effectively treated. However, if left untreated it can spread to the toenails, making the condition harder to treat. Also, other areas, such as scalp, hands or even the groin, can become infected, especially if you use the same towel for feet with the condition as the rest of your body.
Athlete’s foot can be passed from one person to another, and is easily acquired in swimming pools, gyms and communal showers and changing rooms. People who wear industrial boots or footwear for long hours are predisposed to infection, as are sports people. Harmless bacteria and fungi live naturally on our skin, however under the right conditions these organisms can multiply on the skin and ultimately cause infection. A group of fungi called Dermatophytes are responsible for causing athlete’s foot. Dermatophytes thrive and feed of dead skin tissue, and particularly like the dark, moist environment created inside shoes and socks. Hot warm climates are particularly conductive to clinical manifestation. Poor foot hygiene, not thoroughly drying feet after bathing/showering and poorly controlled diabetes can also pre-dispose a person to athlete’s foot. Is your child settled into school? BY TIFFANY ARMITAGE Tiffany Armitage Hypnotherapy
October may seem a little late for talking about back to school anxiety. Most will have settled in by now, however, for some it is still not quite so simple. Emotions can run high when kids are worried about school, and this can turn into physical stress symptoms, especially for younger children. For older children and teenagers, they frequently refuse to go to school. There can, of course, be many underlying reasons for this, ranging from family changes to bullying. However, because stress comes from the way we think about a situation, rather than the situation itself, it may not be obvious to parents why there is a problem. As a practitioner of Solution Focused Hypnotherapy, I commonly help kids get back into school, and settle into a more positive school life. I use a range T of techniques to utilise the child’s
current resources and capacity, and in doing so, support them in finding their own solutions. It’s important to reduce the child’s general anxiety, for which hypnotherapy helps enormously. As well as encouraging talking to the school, I also guide parents towards the following: • Arguably most important is exercise. Exercise reduces the levels of stress chemicals in the body and improves mood. • Social interaction – make sure your child is interacting with people in a positive way at some point in the week. • Self efficacy. Improving self efficacy improves our ability to approach all the challenges and goals in our life with confidence. Practically, this means finding the one thing that your child really enjoys, and help them pursue their involvement in that activity. There are two ways that a property may be jointly owned. The terms used are “joint tenants” and “tenants in common” and they apply even if the property is freehold; they are not tenants in the normal sense. Property owned by joint tenants passes to the survivor(s) automatically if one of them dies, regardless who would otherwise be entitled under his or her Will or by virtue of the law of succession. Where there is a tenancy in common, the shares of the owners are defined; they may be equal or in some other proportion, eg one third and two thirds. On the death of a tenant in common, his or her share passes according to the terms of his or her Will or, if there is no Will, according to the law of succession (intestacy). Note that spouses, former spouses,
children and other dependents may have a claim to ‘reasonable provision’ out of your estate, regardless of what your Will or the laws of intestacy provide. Many married couples buy as joint tenants. The same applies to partnerships between persons of the same sex that have been registered under the Civil Partnerships Act 2004. However, it may be that because of the needs of tax planning (especially important if the value of the property is over the Inheritance Tax threshold), the need to provide for children of a previous marriage or some other reason (eg unequal contributions were made to the purchase price and so you wish to own the property in the proportions of your contributions) that you would prefer to be tenants in common. If you wish to discuss altering your ownership status or tax planning, please contact our offices on 01752 690123.

Money matters There could be cash benefits to voluntary VAT registration, says Lisa Lines Many small businesses don’t need to worry about registering for VAT as they fall below the £83,000 turnover threshold where registration becomes compulsory, but could it be worth registering voluntarily? The flat rate scheme for VAT can be beneficial for businesses whose customers are VAT registered and who have very few costs where VAT is paid, such as staff costs. This scheme allows traders to pay over a rate below the standard rate of 20%, whilst still charging the full rate to customers, resulting in a small advantage for some. There is also
GIVE A CHILD A BETTER LIFE
When to register for VAT a 1% discount on the flat rate where the scheme is used in the first year of VAT registration. Other businesses may supply zero rated goods or services where the rate paid across to HM Revenue & Customs would be zero, but they are still able to claim back the VAT on business expenditure, and so voluntary registration can be a good idea. Some may be concerned that VAT would need to be paid across before money is received from customers, but with the cash accounting scheme available this needn’t be a worry. This scheme is available where turnover is below £1.35 milllion. Of course, voluntary registration
does mean an administrative burden as VAT returns have to be submitted each quarter, with penalties and surcharges issued for late submission. But where there are real cash advantages to registration, small business owners may be happy to take on this task. We regularly review our clients’ affairs to ensure they register for VAT at the right time, be that when their turnover is approaching the registration threshold, or where advantage can be obtained from using a scheme. If you would like to talk to us about whether voluntary registration would be a good idea for your business, give myself or Simon a call.

To mark National Adoption Week (17th-22nd October), local adoption charity Families for Children is once again appealing to those who have ever thought about adoption in the Ivybridge area not to hold back, and possibly consider opening their hearts to an older child, sibling group or those with extra needs. The agency is also looking for families who may wish to consider fostering to adopt – a new service which places babies and very young children with adoptive parents. There are a lot of myths still surrounding adoption, so FfC is inviting people to come and talk with them at an information session being held in the Terrace Room at Endsleigh Garden Centre on Thursday, 20th October, between 10am and 12noon. (There is another session at FfC’s offices at Southgate Court, Buckfastleigh, on Saturday, 22nd October, again between 10am-12noon.)

Retired? Worried about losing your home? David Richardson, founder of Richardsons Legal Services
On Wednesday, 12th October, we are holding a FREE seminar at the Beefeater at Marsh Mills to explain how you can protect your home and yourself against all unforeseen eventualities. The seminar is for people living in Ivybridge, Plymouth and Saltash to enable you to learn more about this subject. Refreshments are available from 10am and the seminar starts at 10.30am, lasting about 90 minutes with opportunity to ask ques-
tions, find out the costs of various legal services, and stay for a buffet lunch at midday if you wish. As we get older (including myself) we begin to worry more. Will my children inherit or will something happen to prevent them inheriting, such as a sudden financial calamity or having to go into a care home? Then there is the question of who will look after my affairs if I get dementia or am unconscious in hospital after a fall. Even a spouse has no legal rights to deal with your financial affairs, or fight your battles for you if you are being sent to a poor care home, or even fight the local authority, NHS or social services if you are
being overcharged for care (as so many people are). The solution is straightforward, however, and that is to have a Lasting Power of Attorney drawn up which gives your Attorneys these rights. You can have up to four Attorneys who can be trusted friends, a spouse, your children etc; typically most people have two or three Attorneys. A Lasting Power of Attorney really is an essential these days, as is a Home Protection Trust and an up-to-date Will. Contact Richardsons Legal Services on 0800 014 8031 for free advice or make an appointment. We are fully qualified, insured and approved by Trading Standards.
