VJ Day ceremony

Photos returned

The Ivybridge branch of the Royal British Legion held a short Act of Remembrance at the town’s War Memorial to mark Victory in Japan Day on 15th August. Led by branch Padre Ken Bromage, the service remembered the many casualties of the conflict, both military and civilian. The service was attended by the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, branch members, and members of the public. The Last Post, played by young bugler Torin, and a two minute silence was observed, which was followed by a wreath laying by the Branch President David Davis.

In last month’s magazine, we published a set of lost photos in the hope of re-uniting them with their owner. The Ivybridge magazine is delighted to report that, within a couple of days of the magazine coming out, we were contacted by family of the people in the photos, and the full set of photos have been returned.

THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918 RECOUNTING LIFE IN THE TOWN O OO REMEMBERING THE FALLEN

Their last days at primary school provided a range of unforgettable experiences for the Year 6 pupils at Manor Primary. They enjoyed a leavers’ disco, a camp night and a trip to Woodlands Adventure Park, rounding everything off with a nostalgic assembly for parents, pupils and staff.

M

any men volunteered for service soon after the war was declared. For example, by April 1915, of the 66 men living in Aveton Gifford eligible for military service, 60 had enlisted. Yet the image of every fit man in the country joining up in order to get a taste of adventure in a war that would be done and dusted by Christmas, is largely mythical. It was soon apparent that not enough fit young men were coming forward. Joint Parliamentary Recruitment Committees were formed and given the responsibility of ensuring Kitchener got enough recruits to fill his New Army battalions. By November 1914, the number of Devonshire men who had enlisted was approximately half of the national average (4.7% compared to 10.2%). Opposition to recruitment came from the trade unions and the Independent Labour Party. It was also opposed by some nonconformist clergy. The Church of England passionately supported recruitment drives and urged men to join up. The Lord Lieutenant of Devon, Earl Fortescue, put the blame for resisting the call to arms onto Devon’s farmers. There may have been some truth in Fortescue’s criticism, for rural recruitment was lower than that from urban areas at a national level. Also, the declaration of war

during the summer harvest meant there was certainly no rush to war by those engaged in agriculture. In 1915, Lord Lieutenant Fortescue began to publish the recruitment figures in local newspapers, perhaps in an effort to shame men into enlistment. The South Devon and Kingsbridge Gazette pointed out that “... British pluck was the same now as it was 100 years ago”, and there was no suggestion that Devon ‘pluck’ should be any less than average. According to the Dartmoor National Park archives, the picture above shows men of the 3rd (Special Reserve) Battalion departing from Bovey Tracey Town Hall during their recruiting march in 1915. The march through south Devon took four days and brought in just 56 new recruits. The 40 soldiers, including a band, were led by Lieutenant GSM Larder who had been wounded in action. They were billeted in South Brent one night and the next day marched to Kingsbridge by a circuitous route, stopping along the way for speeches and refreshments. They left Bittaford at 0920 bound for Ivybridge, Modbury and Salcombe, reaching the latter at 1630. At 1900 the troops reached Kingsbridge where they were joined by soldiers of the 10th King’s Own Regiment who were stationed in the town. Supper was given at the King’s Arms, Kingsbridge.

Second town centre bank set to close

Have you put forward your group or citizen?

A second bank is closing it’s Ivybridge town centre branch this autumn, with the announcement by Barclays that its Fore Street branch will close in November. Barclays said the decision had been made in response to ‘changing customer behaviour’, such as the increasing use of telephone and online banking, but that it had not taken the “difficult decision” lightly. The closure will mean the town loses one of its few cash point machines. Natwest announced earlier this year that its branch, at 62 Fore Street, will close at the end of September.

Nominations are being sought for the prestigious David Britton Citizen of the Year and Nick Cummins Community Group of the Year Awards 2015. The awards recognise individuals and groups whom the town council feel have made a difference through their involvement in the town. Criteria includes those who solely volunteer within the community; as in previous years, the award does cover people living outside the town although they must have provided a service valued by people in Ivybridge. To nominate a person or group, write to Ivybridge Town Council, Erme Court, Leonards Road, Ivybridge, PL21 0SZ, or email the susanhocking@ivybridge.gov.uk, giving full details of name/group, address and reasons why they should be considered. Entries must be received by Friday, 16th October, 2015.

Fashion show date Friends of Erme Primary School is organising a Fashion Show and Sale on Friday, 16th October, at The Erme Primary School. See October’s magazine for more.

New recycling centre given go-ahead A new £3.7 million recycling centre is set to open in Ivybridge at the end of next year. The new centre will be located on the opposite side to the current facility on the slip-road off the A38 Westover junction. The budget for scheme, which gained planning permission last November, was approved by Devon County Council’s cabinet. Councillors were told that the existing centre is not big enough for the growing local population, including the nearby Sherford development, that it causes queuing on adjoining roads, and

@Ivybridgemag // facebook.com/theivybridgemagazine // theivybridgemagazine.co.uk // 07516 539573 // 01752 426522

it was argued that the small scale of the facility contributes to Ivybridge having a lower recycling rate than the rest of Devon – 72% compared to 81%. The new facility will include a resale area and support five fulltime equivalent jobs. The council cabinet also approved plans to carry out advanced drainage works at the nearby football ground to avoid disruption during the season. The budget of £3,703,000 includes a £750,000 section 106 contribution from the developers of the new town of Sherford. The Ivybridge magazine

SUCCESSFUL SHOW Ivybridge Theatre Company’s summer production, Agatha Christie’s Cards on the Table was successfully staged last month at The Watermark, playing to over 160 people. It was a typical ‘whodunnit’ with

suspicious characters, drama, tension and mystery as well as some possible red herrings. There were many twists and turns which kept the audience guessing until the very end, when the murderer was revealed by the Superintendent who laid his ‘cards on the table’. Did you manage to solve the murder?! ITC is now planning its next production, look out for details in future issues of The Ivybridge magazine. ITC meet at Chapel Place, Fore Street, every Wednesday at 7.30pm. If you are interested in performing arts or even helping back-stage, for example making costumes or props, lighting and sound, the company would love to hear from you! Annual membership is £15 for over 16s. FIND OUT MORE: Contact Ron Davis on 01752 893308 or visit ivybridgetheatrecompany.co.uk

EVENTS CONFIRMED There was a gratifying turnout of members at the traditionally quiet August meeting of Ivybridge Probus Club. Prior to the meeting, a caucus of members under the President’s leadership finalised details for the club’s visit to Paris this month, which will include three nights in a luxury hotel on the left bank. After a pleasant lunch at the

Smithaleigh Hotel, President Michael Bailey asked for an update from those members who were organising events. Past President Howard announced a quiz night for late September, and with his speaker secretary hat on confirmed a return visit by Peter Brookes to complete his talk on ““Egyptian Stone Masonry Mysteries – Part 2” for the September meeting. Michael Holman confirmed a rerun of the popular Probus golfing day in early October at the recently rejuvenated Wrangaton Golf Club. Events secretary Peter Corke confirmed a previous announcement that arrangements had been finalised for the Ladies’ Christmas lunch at Elizabeth House in Plympton. The president asked if other members had any suggestions, to which a member recounted a recent fishing trip made off Plymouth Sound and asked if any members would be interested in making a party. Details will be available at the next meeting. FIND OUT MORE: Contact secretary Bob Mailing on 01752 892255

Invitation from Town Mayor, councillor Dave Gray-Taylor It’s my pleasure to once again extend the Town Council’s warm invitation to those who are elderly and/or alone to spend their Christmas Day with us at The Watermark. And, of course, we will again need the help of the wonderful community here in Ivybridge to ensure this year’s event continues to be as good as previous years – businesses may like to make donations, or individuals or groups might like to consider volunteering on the day to help with serving our guests, giving lifts etc. Last year we had a wonderful local singer and our young pianist who provided entertainment, so if you have some talents (we will happily give you a Christmas lunch!) then please contact us. If you, or someone you know, is dreading the thought of a solo Christmas Day then please do get in touch – to book a place contact the Town Hall on 01752 893815. Alternatively, if you wish to discuss how you could contribute to this really worthwhile event please contact the Town Hall and ask to 18

If you have been hesitant about attending, please don’t worry – with the help of Ivybridge Ring and Ride and Ivybridge Caring we can accommodate your transport requirements and any other support you might need. Do join us on Christmas Day this year and be amongst Ivybridge Friends. Best wishes, Dave Gray-Taylor

Stop smoking without relying on will power Quitting smoking doesn’t have to be a battle of will power and nicotine replacements. Hypnotherapy is an effective and proven alternative, and is more effective than both put together. This is because rather than being particularly physically addictive, nicotine is psychologically addictive. It reduces your will power and changes the chemical reward systems in your mind, making it difficult to break the vicious cycle. Hypnotherapy deals with that subconscious part of your mind that is maintaining this habit. Furthermore, because it deals with the subconscious processes in your mind, you are less likely to suffer from cravings or side effects of any kind. BY YVONNE AND DIANE Ivy Counselling

Award-winning consultant set to expand groups I have been a Slimming World consultant based in Ivybridge for the last five years and through my natural understanding and empathy have instilled confidence in hundreds of local ladies, gentlemen, pregnant ladies, folk with health issues such as diabetes and young slimmers, supporting them toward a healthier lifestyle and losing weight in the process. With the latest government figures revealing that two thirds of the population are now over weight or obese, the need to open another group in Ivybridge has never been more important. Obesity is becoming such a huge issue across the UK. When I first joined Slimming World as a member, I never dreamed that I would end up helping other people to lose weight. It’s a privilege to be able to pass on the experience, insight and understanding that helped me, so that I can give my members

the support they need to get to target. As a slimmer myself, I know how hard it can be. Sharing recipes and other ideas and overcoming disappointments, as well as celebrating success, was and still is for me all part of the journey, so there’ll be lots of support, encouragement and fun at group. My additional Slimming World group will be held at Ivybridge Chapel Place every Tuesday at 3.30pm from Tuesday 8th Sept. For more information, or to join the new group – or indeed any of the other sessions held in Chapel Place on Mondays 5.30pm and 7.30pm, or Tues 9.30am,11.30am or 5.30pm – either pop along to a session or phone 07930 473 542.

What sort of Will should I make? David Richardson, founder of Richardsons Legal Services

There are many reasons to make a Will. If you are young with under age children and you had a fatal accident without making a Will, the state will decide who is going to look after them and they could go into care and be fostered out. A simple Will ensures that the people you nominate as guardians will become the guardians. For a typical young married or unmarried couple whose main asset is the family home, a pair of simple Wills is better than nothing, but does not guarantee that your wishes are carried out on second death. The only way to ensure this will happen is to put a trust in the Will which comes into being on first death and protects that half of the prop-

Become a hedgehog champion Two local hedgehog sanctuaries are struggling to cope with the number of hedgehogs they are receiving. A number of hedgehogs have recently been rescued from Ivybridge alone, which have been either injured, sick or underweight hoglets. These are being cared for at the sanctuaries before, hopefully, being released back into the wild near where they were found. Could you help the sanctuaries? They are looking for peo-

erty for the eventual beneficiaries while allowing total flexibility to the partner left behind to live in the property and still move home when the time comes. For an older widowed person or couple who are retired I would recommend putting your home into a free standing trust to protect it and so that no probate is needed after death, and if you do this a simple Will or pair of Wills is generally enough. Should you own a property and want to ensure a partner or other

person can remain in the property for life or a fixed period of time while leaving the property to someone else, perhaps your children to be sold at a later date, you will probably need a Will with a right to occupy trust in it. These are just a few different circumstances and types of Will. Always get professional advice on what you will require. Richardsons Legal Services – 0800 014 8031. How to make a table decoration using flowers from your garden

Items needed: • A small plastic tray - you can use a small plastic food container • 1/3 of a block of oasis, soaked in water until the bubbles stop. • Green foliage - a mixture of size, texture and shape • Flowers, eg honeysuckle, montbretia ,daisies, hebe. Method: Place the foliage in the oasis with the longer stems in the centre. Aim for the overall height to be approx 17cm. The foliage should cover the green oasis. Add the flowers of your choice, placing them throughout the foliage as shown in the picture, keeping the stems quite short.

Year 2 children at Manor Primary enjoyed an experience to remember at an end of term camp night. The children helped set up camp on the school field before enjoying a fun swim session in the outdoor pool. They then went on a treasure hunt around the grounds before a late supper prepared by the staff, and had story time before they were tucked up in their tents.

Dealing with Probate yourself Katherine Millman, Howard & Over

In tough economic times, it comes as no surprise that people are cost-cutting at every possible opportunity. This can, however, come at a large cost. When a loved one dies, you may be left with the responsibility of dealing with their estate, whether through a Will or through the Laws of Intestacy. The role as a personal representative/executor is an important one, it is however one that should not be undertaken lightly. It is a common misconception that debts die with the deceased. If the estate is able to make payment of the debts, then you are under a duty to ensure that the debt is paid. You are not, however, personally responsible for the payment of debts owed by the estate if it is unable to pay it unless if you have made a mistake in the distribution. If you take on the role as an executor you may be personally responsible for:

(a) Reduced value of estate assets (if you could have reasonably avoided it). Eg if you accepted a below-market price for the sale of a property. (b) Fines/interest imposed by the Revenue. (c) Expenditure which is normally reclaimable out of the estate (eg estate agents fees) where there is not sufficient money. (d) Overpayments to beneficiaries. Executors also have a duty to use an appropriate degree of care and skill which includes ensuring that the assets are distributed in a timely manner as well as making sure that assets are secure/insured. Executors should put in place Statutory Notices (not family death notices) to protect themselves as failing to do so may result in creditors pursuing the executor personally for up to six years. If you are given the responsibility of administering someone’s estate, make sure you seek legal advice as soon as possible to ensure you’re not out of pocket. Katherine Millman is a solicitor specialising in Wills, Probate and Lasting Powers of Attorney at Howard & Over

This time of year is busy for the Ranger team, as DNPA Ranger Andrea Roberts explains

With the school summer holidays almost behind us, the pace on Dartmoor has slowed down a little bit as people return to school and work. However, September and October can still be busy for the Ranger team. One of our priorities at this time of the year is to continue clearing the surface vegetation from the network of footpaths and bridleways which cover the moor. We do this working with volunteers, voluntary wardens, contractors and landowners. For instance, the footpath which runs around Henlake Down( which is a long path) will be cleared by a charity called Skills South West this year, enabling Ella and myself to continue strimming some of the smaller paths on our own. Some additional help that the Ranger team have had this year has come from two Bicton College students. Sara-Jane and Rabi, who are studying a countryside management course at the college, have been coming out and helping with various tasks including litter picking, strimming, stile building and assisting at shows. If there is a path that you regularly use on Dartmoor that has become overgrown we will get to it as soon as we can, however please feel free to let us know about the paths which need clearing as this can help to prioritise the paths in order of popularity/ priority clearing. Dartmoor has an abundance of formal and informal car parks dotted all over, allowing access to popular walks, picnics areas and beauty spots. Unfortunately, these can offer rich pickings for the criminal element out there. The park authority is aware of several car breakins across the moor over the last month or two. We are, as always, working closely with the police to try and combat these crimes, but please be MOOR AWARE and don’t leave any valuables in your vehicle, not even tucked away in the boot. If you do happen to experience a break-in, please report it to the police. This helps to build up a picture of where the crimes are happening, which can then help in planning how to combat these crimes, for instance with the use of covert capture cars or more patrolling in targeted areas.

Another of the Harriers’ talented crop of young athletes, Sam Trigg, won the UKA National Championships U23 Triple Jump at Bedford. Meanwhile, a host of Harriers athletes have continued in impressive form at recent races. There was success at the Chudleigh Carnival 6 for Allister Bristow, 5th overall and 1st male vet 40, and Cleo Perry, 2nd lady and 1st female vet 40. Harriers turned out in force at the Haytor Heller.
