COMMUNITY FOCUS

The Most Interesting Person I’ve Interviewed This Month Female CEO Starts Creative New Venture in Jacksonville with “Mee Mee TV” It’s a new opportunity for local talent to show off their skills on a brand new television platform for the First Coast.

First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross

“MeeMeeTV” is the brainchild of Kathryn McAvoy, CEO of the city’s Performers Academy.

“There’s a lot of talent here on the First Coast, and we plan to showcase it on television,” she said. “Mee Mee TV Jax” will air on local digital channel 18.1 and feature all things Duval- from local performers, to bands, to film shorts and more. McAvoy has built a studio behind the Performers Academy, which offers classes for budding actors, singers, dancers and filmmakers. “Now the television piece will bring it all together,” she said. “We’re going to showcase some amazing talent.” Open auditions for “Mee Mee TV” were held in March at the Performer’s Academy, and the performer’s who audition experienced an interesting twist. “The audition IS television,” said McAvoy. “Just like on ‘American Idol,’ if you show up to audition, it will be on TV!”

We Care Jacksonville WeCareJacksonville.org

Twenty years ago a small group of physicians met to tackle a community crisis- too many of our underserved citizens without health insurance were suffering from preventable diseases and coming to our emergency rooms where care was too late or too expensive. Today, We Care Jacksonville is an affiliation of 560 specialist, 12 independent free clinics, eight hospitals and one rehabilitation hospital. Care is provided without charge and occurs across the community, not only in free clinics but also in hundreds of private doctor’s offices, in hospitals and in imagine centers. Physicians, nurses, and other licensed health professionals participate in We Care voluntarily. In return, many are covered by Sovereign Immunity established by the State of Florida in the 1992 Access to Care Act.

The Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary CattyShack.org

The Catty Shack Ranch is dedicated to the rescue and care of big cats. We provide sanctuary to cats confiscated by the state for illegal ownership, improper enclosures or maltreatment. Educating the public on these beautiful wild cats is our passion. Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. Our primary focus is in the rescue of cats from serious situations. We are completely run by volunteers, so we are only able to be open certain days of the week. Please see our “Public Tours” listing for the days we are open on our website. Our current residents include tigers, lions, cougars, leopards, bobcats, arctic foxes, and coatimundis (the last two are “honorary cats”). Our events are our primary way of raising funds for our residents. 100% of proceeds to go our residents!

LEADERSHIP JAX

An interview with a leader in the Jacksonville Community

Improving Lives and Inspiring Others

DR. RICHARD GRIMSLEY

Orthopaedic Surgeon, Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute

BUZZ: Was it always your goal to become an Orthopaedic Surgeon? Tell us about your journey. DR. GRIMSLEY: I knew that I wanted to be a physician, but it wasn’t until medical school--when I realized how profoundly joint replacement surgery could improve the lives of people with severe arthritis pain--that I decided to specialize in orthopedics. I really enjoy watching my patients steadily improve after surgery. I find it extremely rewarding to act and see the impact of my actions on behalf of my patients. So, after medical school I completed a five-year residency in orthopedic surgery at NYU, and then added an additional year of fellowship training in total joint replacement.

April 2014 • www.iwantaBUZZ.com

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

For me, being a leader means ensuring that your actions are guided by a set of core values—honesty, compassion, integrity, and commitment—because actions are the real indicator of character. Talent is a gift, but character is a choice. I try to bring those values to my work. It’s important to me that my patients know they’re not just another number, that I am invested in their success, and that my team works very hard to bring them back to their fullest potential. A good surgeon measures personal success and accomplishment through the improved life of a patient and the skill of the surgical team. BUZZ: What advice would you leave future leaders? DR. GRIMSLEY: First of all, recognize that becoming a good leader is a lifelong process. Learn to be flexible. Follow through with excellence; keep learning, growing and improving. As a surgeon, I have to be technically adept. I also have to be able to change, to learn new ways of doing things if the outcomes warrant it. One truism in medicine used to be that great surgeons make big incisions, yet now we use much smaller incisions and I really focus on making procedures as minimally invasive as possible when the literature justifies that approach.

BUZZ: You were one of the leaders recognized at the Legacy of Leaders dinner and in the Portrait of Leadership Gallery that was held at Ocean 60. What does being a “leader” mean to you?

Second, accept that leadership doesn’t happen in a void. You’re not a leader just because you’ve got an M.D. after your name. You have to be comfortable as the head of a team, motivating them and exacting their best efforts, while accepting full responsibility for all outcomes.

DR. GRIMSLEY: First of all, I was honored by the selection, and proud to be featured with so many talented and personally inspiring people. It’s so important that we recognize leadership comes from all walks of life.

Finally, be motivated by something other than money. Find your motivation in a desire for personal development, and you’ll always be willing to take on an interesting challenge, or pursue a new opportunities.

THE ARTS

Arts Unleashed

Be On The Look Out For

Robert Louis Clinton

I grew up near Atlanta, Georgia and have lived in Jacksonville since 2007. I’ve had artistic abilities since I was young; it runs in the family. I formally studied art at the Art Institute of Atlanta and Georgia State and I casually study art everyday when I watch a movie, walk around downtown or ride bike trails. My main concentration has been painting black and white images on canvas using India ink, which began when I started using my collection of antique photographs as reference material”. - Robert Louis Clinton Jr.

Tiffany Wright always had a reputation for being smart. In middle school, she was an honor roll student. In high school, she was valedictorian of her class. She dabbled in the arts performing in school plays and enjoying liturgical dance, but primarily her intelligence held center stage. But, while attending college at University of North Florida, a shift took place. She began to delve into all manner of expression including writing poetry, dancing, singing, and acting. As she got more deeply enmeshed into a variety of performing arts, they took a more prominent position in her life, and her selfdefinition changed. She, now, was not only a scholarly person; but also an ardent lover of the performing arts. The two roles now shared equal billing. Others took notice and gravitated to Tiffany when searching for happening events, local auditions, and gifted talent. Because of her kind nature and immersion in the lifestyle, she readily had the answers and freely shared them. Over time, Tiffany recognized her role as an informational hub for the arts, and her business, The Performing Arts Link-Up was born. Through her organization, Tiffany provides a central source for all things related to her passion. It is a terrific resource, offering a calendar of events, audition information, a talent directory, and vendor listings. Webisodes on the site highlight special events and/or local talent. Although, a majority of the site services are free, t-shirts that identify the wearer as a performing artist are available for sale. And, you don’t want to miss the quarterly performer’s showcase that The Performing Arts Link-Up produces with super talent live on stage. When Tiffany Wright discovered her inner artist, the world gained a valuable resource. Now, we all can be in the “know” and be a part of the vibrant Jacksonville arts scene. THEATRE IN THE KNOW

By Todd Rykaczewski

Interviewing Colin Mochrie Two masters of improv comedy, Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood of “Whose Line is it Anyway?” have teamed up to present a night of hilarious improvisational comedy with their live tour, “Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood: Two Man Group.”

Like most Americans, every time I would sit down to watch a show like “Whose Line,” I would also junk out. For me the junk food of choice is popcorn drenched in garlic salt. A snack that has a strong relationship with the couch, television and staring blankly at a screen. Leaving me with only two thoughts at the end of my interview with Colin Millions of fans enjoyed Colin Mochrie in the triumphant Mochrie, I really want to go to his show and now I really return of “Whose Line Is It Anyway?” this past summer, want some popcorn! which brought huge ratings to The CW channel. The show has been renewed for a second season, which BUZZ: Is there anything you would like to tell will also feature Brad Sherwood who was a regular Jacksonville about your show? co-star on ABC’s “Whose Line is it Anyway?” along COLIN: Come to our show, you won’t learn anything, with Mochrie. but there will be lots of laughs. Basically, it’s like a live version of “Whose Line,” big goofy fun. Also, the show Mochrie’s first appearance on “Whose Line is it Anyway,” is family friendly so everyone can come. the British version, was in 1991. His role on the American “Whose Line” got off to a rocky start when ABC wanted to BUZZ: Do you have any exciting projects coming up? drop Mochrie because they thought the comedian looked COLIN: Shooting “Whose Line” is my major focus too old and not hip enough. Thankfully those involved in right now. the show held their ground, and ABC was smart enough to see that talent and creativity were more important BUZZ: Have you reached all your goals than “hip” and the fans agreed, making Mochrie a popular as a performer? mainstay on the American “Whose Line” stage. COLIN: It’s an ongoing thing. I’m fortunate to have

created an occupation out of something that was not there growing up. I would like to do more movies and television.

BUZZ: If you couldn’t be an improv comedian, what job would you want to have? COLIN: I’m really glad this worked out; I have no skills whatsoever to fall back on. I guess I would do a cooking thing. BUZZ: Do you have a ritual before you go on stage? COLIN: We try and walk on stage with nothing in our minds. We don’t want to have a preconception of how the show will go. We want the audience to guide us along. Colin Mochrie and Brad Sherwood will appear at the historic Florida Theatre in Jacksonville on Friday, April 11 at 8 p.m. Tickets range from $28.50 to $53 and are on sale now at the Florida Theatre box office, by calling (904) 355ARTS, or online at FloridaTheatre.com.

Players By The Sea Dying for laughs: “The Lyons” is outrageous family comedy at Players by the Sea in April Audiences eager for great entertainment depend on Players by the Sea to bring them the best new plays fresh from Broadway. Jacksonville’s favorite theatre presents the local premiere of Nicky Silver’s 2012 Tony-nominated comedy “The Lyons” April 11-27 on the Studio Stage. A long-running hit, “The Lyons” distills the bitterness of angry adult children and aging parents into a sparkling and intoxicating comic brew. Rita Lyons, a Jewish matron with a cliché statement for every occasion, sits by the hospital bed of her husband Ben, waiting for him to die so she can redecorate. Ben’s response to imminent death is a stream of vicious profanity. Their children are the walking wounded of the 40-year war between their parents. Lisa’s self-esteem hangs by a thread as she struggles with a drinking problem, pines for her abusive ex-husband, and endures her mother’s endless nagging. Curtis is a glib would-be writer, whose sole career accomplishment is the elaborate imaginary relationship he has constructed with a perfect boyfriend who doesn’t exist. Yes, there’s no more dangerous place than the bosom of your own family. “The Lyons” is directed by Bradley Akers, who conceived last season’s hit production of “Dog Sees God” and joined the PBTS Staff as Education Associate, Communications Manager and all-around creative force. The cast includes PBTS past President Holly Gutshall as Rita and Lou Agresta, recently seen in “Glengarry Glen Ross,” as Ben. Pelican Award winner Lindsay Curry plays Lisa and Hiatt Woods is Curtis. Damon Cark and Kristin Alexander play key supporting characters. Performances are April 11,12,17,18,19,24,25,26 at 8 p.m. There is a Sunday matinee April 27 at 2 p.m. For information and tickets, call (904) 249-0289 or log onto PlayersByTheSea.org. JACKSONVILLE MOMS BLOG JaxMomsBlog.com Jacksonville Moms Blog was founded by two friends, Megan Kilis and Vicky Lane, who met through a local mom fitness group. Realizing a lack of resources for moms in the area, they sought to create an online community for local Jacksonville-area moms to connect with each other; discover local businesses and resources; and share experiences, ideas, and information. We want to encourage other Jacksonville moms to get out in the community and try new things. We strive to provide moms with relevant, timely and fun information about all things mom here in the greater Jacksonville area.

During the summer, it is best to go with a tube vs. kayak/canoe as there are many people on the river and this seems to ease the congestion. Ichetucknee Springs Park has different launching and ending points and you can choose to tube from 1- 3 hours depending on where you exit. SUMMER SAFETY with Cynthia Dennis Coordinator at Safe Kids Northeast Florida/ Wolfson Children’s Hospital

BUZZ: WHAT IS SAFE KIDS NORTHEAST FL?

THE TRUTH ABOUT SUNSCREEN

With Andrea Bailey, Licensed Medical Aesthetician Ponte Vedra Plastic Surgery, PVPS.com Are you really protecting your skin as well as you should be? Here are some common questions and misconceptions about sunscreen.

BUZZ: Can I rely on the SPF in my makeup to protect my skin? AB: Not really. Makeup wears off throughout the day, so it cannot be relied upon to thoroughly protect our skin. I consider SPF in makeup an added layer of protection, but sunscreen is most efficacious as a stand-alone product. There are now so many oil-free and elegant formulations available for the face and body; heavy and overly emollient sunscreens of years past are now virtually obsolete.

CD: It’s a local coalition of Safe Kids Worldwide and a part of the PLAYERS Center for Child Health at Wolfson Children’s Hospital and covers 6 counties in Northeast Florida. Our mission is to promote pediatric injury prevention by bringing together local organizations, and offer programs to prevent accidental injuries to children ages 19 and under. Since Safe Kids was founded in 1988, there has been a 55% decrease in the accidental injury rate among children 19 years and younger. Wolfson Children’s, as well as grants from Safe Kids • A: Avoid heatstroke-related injury and death by never leaving your child Worldwide and public and private contributors provide funding for our program. alone in a car, not even for a minute. And make sure to keep your car locked when you’re not in it, so kids can’t get in on their own.

BUZZ: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PROGRAMS OFFERED BY SAFE KIDS? CD: We offer a variety of injury prevention programs including car safety, sports

BUZZ: DOES HEATSTROKE ONLY OCCUR ON EXTREMELY HOT DAYS? CD: These injuries certainly occur more often in the hot summer months, but it does not have to be an extremely hot day for heatstroke to occur. It doesn’t have to do so much with the outside temperature, but just the sun beating down on a car. Your car can heat up 19 degrees in just 10 minutes and a child’s body heats up 3 to 5 times faster than an adult. Always have a plan in place in case your normal routine changes and create extra reminders to avoid forgetting a child is in your car.

CD: We provide free car seat inspections every Tuesday at our headquarters by appointment only and also once a month at Destination Maternity in the St. Johns Town Center and the Baptist Clay Medical Campus. For more information you can visit WolfsonChildrens.org and find us under Programs & Services and call 202-4302 to schedule your car seat inspection.

Sometimes we forget what a flourishing downtown scene we have right here in Jacksonville. We all know about our fantastic downtown Main Library and the frequent concerts (and fireworks) at the Jacksonville Landing, but downtown is much, much more than that. From unique modes of transportation to (free) tours of our own local robotics company (the Sally Corporation), downtown Jacksonville has plenty to do and see without breaking your budget! Other kid-friendly spots downtown include the MOSH, MOCA, Water taxi, Top to Bottom Walking Tour and the Jacksonville Skyway. Don’t forget to stop for lunch at the Skyline Café at the top of the Bank of America building or the Burrito Gallery in the heart of downtown.

EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT

AB: A broad spectrum SPF 30 is sufficient for dayto-day life. When you know you will be spending more time outdoors I would recommend a SPF 50 or higher with reapplication every hour to be safe. And of course, a wide-brimmed hat and sunglasses are always a good way to prevent exposure to the scalp, face, ears, eyes, and neck.

AB: Apply SPF 30 in the morning every day, and 50 for higher exposure, reapplying hourly. Remember statistics currently say 1 in 5 will get melanoma, so start applying sunscreen to your kids every single morning! And when they play outdoor sports also suggest to the coach they all wear either a ball cap or visor for extra face protection.

BUZZ: I’VE HEARD THAT SAFE KIDS HAS A CAR SEAT SAFETY PROGRAM AS WELL. HOW CAN PARENTS TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THIS PROGRAM?

Downtown Jax with Kids

AB: Absolutely. Sunscreen is the most important step in preventing skin cancer and skin aging and should never be omitted. Most of us are indoors during the day at the office or at home, but inevitably we get in the car or are exposed to UV rays through a window. And don’t let cloud cover fool you, UV rays penetrate clouds as well. The sun is our skin’s worst enemy, so if you don’t like skin cancer or wrinkles, then sunscreen is for you!

BUZZ: What is the minimum SPF for kids?

• C: Create reminders by putting something in the back seat of your car next to your child such as a briefcase, a purse, or a cellphone that is needed at your final destination. This is especially important if you’re not following your normal routine.

safety, walking safely, water safety including swimming lessons for low-income • T: Take action. If you see a child alone in a car, call 911. Emergency personnel want families, bicycle helmet inspections and fittings, and much more. you to call. They are trained to respond to these situations. One call could save a life.

BUZZ: Do I need to wear sunscreen every single day, even though I am indoors?

BUZZ: What SPF number should I wear?

BUZZ: OVER THE PAST FEW YEARS THERE HAVE BEEN NUMEROUS STORIES OF HEATSTROKE-RELATED DEATHS IN CHILDREN DUE TO BEING LEFT IN A CAR. WHAT HAS SAFE KIDS DONE TO TRY TO PREVENT THESE ACCIDENTS? CD: Heatstroke is the leading cause of non-crash, vehicle-related deaths for children. We created an awareness program, Never Leave Your Child Alone in a Car to help remind parents, caregivers, and the public to ACT:

The Oyster Jam will host the Shuck’n Contest on Sunday at 3 p.m. for shuckers to compete for CASH and a trophy for The Oyster Jam “Master Shucker.” It is sure to be another close competition as returning champion, Justin Armstrong, from The Fish Company in Atlantic Beach and runner up, Tim Foley, from Bluefish in Riverside, open oysters, clean shells and create a presentation for the GTM Research Reserve panel of judges. The GTM Research Reserve is a private non-profit citizen group who collected over 2870 lbs of shells at the 2013 Oyster Jam and recycled them to make new oyster beds. A new feature for 2014 is The Oyster Jam Cook-off on Sunday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Oyster Pavilion. Restaurants and chefs from all over N. Florida will be competing to WIN the title for the Best Classic Oyster Rockefeller and a Specialty Oyster from panel of celebrity judges and Peoples Choice Award. The Oyster Jam Music Festival is brought to downtown Jacksonville as a feature inside the 18th Annual Southeast US Boat Show. The Southeast US Boat Show three-day event includes boating and fishing seminars, a full schedule of events and a broad selection of power boats, sail boats, yachts, kayaks and marine accessories.

It was love at first sight for Tamara, a volunteer at the event. She had been looking for just the right cat to add to her family and found “the one” while she was helping find homes for other pets. She brought him home that day and named him Bob Dylan.

Find Unconditional Love in a Four-Legged Friend Mega Adoption Event Helps Empty Shelters

DATE: April 25-27 TIME: Adoption hours are 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. every day LOCATION: Jacksonville Fairgrounds No matter what kind of dog or cat you are looking for, you can find a new best friend at the April Mega Adoption event. For the third year in a row, Jacksonville will host a series of the largest adoption events in the country.

The $10 admission tickets provides access to BOTH The Oyster Jam Music Festival and the Southeast US Boat Show which includes the Oyster Cookoff, Best Trick at the Wakeboarding Slider Jam, the Boat Show Bikini Contest , the SUP Race, the Guide Shack, an Art Village and vendors galore.

First Coast No More Homeless Pets brings together Jacksonville Animal Care and Protective Services, Jacksonville Humane Society, and other shelters and rescues from across Northeast Florida for these events. They are part of a community effort to make northeast Florida no kill.

As a bonus, when you go by Lexus of Jacksonville or Lexus of Orange Park and test drive the Official Tow Vehicle of the Southeast US Boat Show you will receive a FREE TICKET!

The Mega Adoption events are a “one-stop shop” for adopting a pet, but they also serve another purpose. For years, FCNMHP and their partners in animal welfare have been working to make Jacksonville and the rest of Northeast Florida no kill. These adoption events give the shelters breathing room while other FCNMHP programs aim to decrease shelter intake and tackle pet overpopulation.

For more information on competing in any of the contests, becoming a vendor or for the updated schedule of events please go to TheOysterJamMusicFestival.com.

All pets at the Mega Adoption event will be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and come with a city license (if applicable) for just a $20 adoption fee. The Mega Adoption events are sponsored by PetSmart Charities. ABOUT FIRST COAST NO MORE HOMELESS PETS (FCNMHP) The mission of First Coast No More Homeless Pets is to end the needless killing of cats and dogs in shelters. Since 2002, more than 140,000 dogs and cats have been sterilized and have benefited from our programs. The euthanasia rate Jacksonville has been reduced by 90%. FCNMHP hosts Mega Adoption Events, provides funds for medically injured animals, provides outreach programs and runs the Jacksonville Pet Food Bank. FCNMHP.org

Until next time!

Jessica Cooksey Paulraj moved to India, after graduating college, to become a mission nurse in Baby Adam’s hometown. Jessica is a keen example of the support and good family values the Cookseys represent. In September 2011 Jessica was happily married to Doctor Raja Paulraj. The couple discovered Baby Adam when they arrived at work one morning. He was abandoned and left without family or the hope of survival. His condition, Bartsocas, left him with his legs webbed together, mouth and nose deformed, and missing his fingers and eyelids. Today Baby Adam is a happy addition to Jessica and Raja’s family, after they officially adopted him. Medically, the road is a long and difficult one ahead for Baby Adam. Numerous complicated and expensive surgeries are needed to improve his physical health and quality of life. UNC Chapel Hill has graciously been providing access to procedures Baby Adam would otherwise not able to obtain, and he has come over from India to receive their care and recover here in Jacksonville. Another blessed turn of events would be in Baby Adam’s future. Local artist Scott Morphew, of Black and White Ministries, picked up the newspaper one morning to see the heartfelt image of Jessica holding her son in an article describing the young parent’s commitment to their new baby and his challenges. What he saw was nearly a mirror image of a portrait he had completed only the night before – a popular piece aptly named “The Kiss of Life.” Scott took this as his cue to become Baby Adam’s most active advocate, and has launched a campaign through One Spark to gain awareness and donations to help Jessica and her family afford Baby Adam’s medical care. Scott participated last year in One Spark on Baby Adam’s behalf, and the results directly affected his health and progress in 2013. He has continued to help Baby Adam by contributing all proceeds from sale of the “The Kiss of Life” portrait to the cause. It is the goal of Scott and all of Baby Adam’s advocates to make this year’s One Spark entry a massive success, and help our tiny friend get the treatment he deserves. Help Baby Adam by visiting BabyAdamsJourney.com/ to learn more and donate, but especially do not forget to vote for entry #20001 (who will be located in the Visit Jacksonville building) at One Spark this year! Baby Adam thanks you.

What’s Happening at MOSH By Kristi Taylor

Unearthed Treasures Tell Jacksonville’s Civil War History Did you know Jacksonville is home to a National Historic Landmark? The Maple Leaf, a Union steamship, sank in the St. Johns River on April 1, 1864. One hundred and fifty years later, much of the wreckage remains undisturbed nestled beneath 32 feet of mud near Mandarin. THAT FATEFUL NIGHT On March 31, 1864, the Maple Leaf arrived in Jacksonville and was ordered to transport 87 horses and men from Jacksonville to Palatka the same day. The steamship never made it back to the city. On April 1, 1864 around 4 a.m., the Maple Leaf ran into a Confederate torpedo (what we would now call a mine) at Mandarin Point and sank to the bottom of the St. Johns River. The explosion tore the bow of the ship apart, ripping through the deck and killing four soldiers.

EXCAVATION The wreckage of Maple Leaf remained virtually undisturbed until July 1988. Divers from St. Johns Archaeological Expeditions, Inc. entered the cargo hold of the Maple Leaf for the first time and recovered in excess of 100 artifacts. In the spring of 1989, divers removed the cap rail section of the bow and brought it to the surface along with additional artifacts from the cargo hold. Some of the treasures uncovered by divers include Union soldiers’ personal belongings, U.S. Army-issued weapons, and pillaged good from southern plantation homes. MAPLE LEAF AT MOSH Many of the artifacts recovered by Keith Holland and his team are on display in the Museum of Maple Leaf Checkers Science & History’s regional history exhibit, “Currents of Time: A History of Northeast Florida.” A traveling exhibit on the Maple Leaf from the Museum of Florida History is also on display at MOSH through May 26. To learn more about this fascinating glimpse into Jacksonville’s Civil War history, visit MOSH Saturday, April 5 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for Maple Leaf History Day. John Winkler, Maple Leaf authority, will be at MOSH along with Maple Leaf model craftsman Dennis Cannady, the Florida Public Archaeology Network and the St. Augustine Lighthouse.

Two Thumbs Up

The Blue Crab Crabhouse

Article by Monica Stouder & Photos by Monica Lea Imagery

There is no shortage of seafood spots here in Jax, but I do appreciate a menu that specializes in cool crustaceans. And hooking into this Mandarin-based Maryland-style crab house is definitely one delicious bite! The interior at TBC is covered in fun little signage, novelty lighting, fish nets and colorful crab artwork. And feel free to add your own masterpiece to the walls here as well. Hundreds of folks have provided their own thoughts by scribing names, quotes and mini-masterpieces via Sharpie on the walls. Yes, this place has a lot of character indeed! Many folks have driven by the shack located on the frontage of this restaurant, thinking that this initial building is in fact TBC. Just pull in and drive a short distance back and you will spot the graveled parking area, and backset from the main road you will find the real crabby paradise. Many of the menu items are crab infused such as the crab balls, stuffed mushrooms, crab dip, soups, crab cakes, sandwiches and even a very special house-made Martini! TBC also has a house specialty of Garlic Blue Crabs which I intend to try upon my next visit to be sure. But on this Wednesday evening I enjoyed the Stuffed Crab Delight that came with a couple of homemade sides. The filling in my hard-shelled fare was seasoned perfectly and

Contact: 260-2722 BlueCrabCrabhouse.com

not overwhelmed with a boil spice or pimento – thank goodness. This was a very tasty bite! And the Cream of Crab Soup was a lighter chowder with a shockingly generous portion of crab. My specific server Jesse was knowledgeable, friendly, and very attentive. He explained that each menu entrée was in fact made-to-order. And while I did not notice a huge delay in receiving my food, just be aware that a “fast food” joint this is not. (Actually, when dining out I find that enjoying the company of my foodie friends and family is what this experience should be mostly about anyway. And if the food is good – I am completely cool with a little time prior to a fork frolic. TBC is definitely conducive to this kind of laid back eating experience.) So cast off to Mandarin (and here’s the bait) - good food, varied menu of Maryland-style fish favorites, smiling staff, unique atmosphere, great price points, locally-owned and operated – Yup…no tall fish tales needed, The Blue Crab is one tasty catch.

BUZZworthy Note: Some amazing weekly specials here to note! If you hit up TBC before 6 p.m. Tuesday – Friday you can order up one of the 3 Early Bird Special’s! 3 fish dishes that are only $6.95 and $7.95! On Tuesday’s from 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. a pitcher of Margaritas (on the rocks with salted rims) is only $5.00. Wednesday is a Fish and Chips special for only $4.95 and Thursday features Garlic Shell Pasta with shrimp and mussels for $6.95. Sunday spotlights some magical Mimosas & Bloody Mary’s for a crazy low cost of $1.95 each from 12:30 p.m. until 5 p.m. Additionally there is a pennypinching section of the menu where several dinners are only $9.95!

Arden’s KAfe & KAtering

know about this incredible gem. Now for those of you who have an aversion to buffets…stop reading… because this mouthwatering megaplex of food is a buffet-lovers Nirvana!

The FacTs What: Arden’s Kafe & Katering When: Wednesday Afternoon Where: 4555 St. Johns Ave. Contact: 240-1404 | Ardens-Kafe-and-Katering.com

There are so many positives about this eatery, but I’ll share a bit about the atmosphere itself; a totally unassuming, hole-in-the-wall, strip mall vibe. I visited on a Wednesday afternoon around 11:30 a.m. and the parking was ample. I was greeted with a super-friendly “Hello – sit where you’d like,” and was surprised to find that there were multiple rooms with tons of seating. Now this place is nothing fancy, homey even. And this extremely causal vibe is conveyed with simple tables and mismatched chairs, various chachki’s dotting the walls and one cheerful staff clad in t-shirts and blue jeans.

jalapeño fritters, biscuits, and bread pudding treasure trove of amazing eateries! add a whole other level to the eating experience. Dessert-lovers have their choice between many different cakes, puddings, cobblers and icecreams as well. Monday to Thursday: 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., $8.95, with different proteins rotating daily There is just so much more that I haven’t listed… Friday: Seafood buffet 10 a.m. – 3 p.m., $10.95, Open and it is ALL delicious! again 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. Seafood buffet $12.95

There is enough food here to feed a small country THERE IS ENOUGH FOOD – or at least the Jags defensive line. And to my surprise there were 2 large hot bars filled with HERE TO FEED A SMALL a multitude of proteins; meatloaf, liver and COUNTRY – OR AT LEAST onions, turkey and gravy, baked chicken, grilled and fried pork chops and legumes. Apparently THE JAGS DEFENSIVE LINE. the proteins change every day but some of the standards comprise a huge array of cooked vegetables – carrots, rutabaga, greens, creamed With the casual-cool vibe, outstanding peas, cabbage, pole beans, mashed potato and an service, variety of tasty, homemade food items, incredibly low price point and pretty amazing ample chicken wing area. local ownership, this outstanding spot for Additionally there is a cold salad bar stocked savory seconds is one I know I will revisit again Well thank you to the random post on Facebook with crisp veg and another salad bar with carrot, and again. for this delicious find. And even though Arden’s tuna, potato and edamame salads, etc. Hot soup has been in business around 10 years, I didn’t and other homemade items such as cornbread, Another shining restaurant gem in Jacksonville’s Serious stomach growling is not satiated with petite plates – unless you taste twenty. And when the wallet is waning tons of tapas can seriously blow up the budget - let alone doom extra dollars when a duo. So curb the cash and bring your fellow starving second to an all you can eat utopia at Arden’s Kafe and Katering. Because 2 can eat like kings for under $20 at this bountiful, homestyle buffet!

By Jan Leggio Hodges-Check out her blog on iwantBUZZ.com

Phillip L. Standifer of Rockstar Gardens Philip L. Standifer is at home with plants and dirt. His alliance with nature easily morphed into a profession. If you are searching for a label, you might call Mr. Standifer a garden designer with a degree in horticulture, but be careful, as his skills won’t be so neatly contained. Certainly, in his business, Rockstar Gardens, he is called upon to design landscapes, but his love of vegetation sprouts into other arenas, as well. While dining in local restaurants like Lulu’s, España, or Gourmet Gourmet, you might coincidentally be enjoying his handiwork. These establishments look to Mr. Standifer for his expertise in botanical arts. Maybe, you have recently attended a wedding or intimate party. Again, Mr. Standifer is a popular choice for event planning. He does not act as a florist might, but rather has an eye for the entirety of the desired atmosphere, and works his craft from this perspective. His motto, “ambience is everything” depicts the importance he places on the total experience of the guest. He pulls from a wide range of experience and appreciates how special nuances like lighting can affect peoples’ moods and comfort level. His close relationship with nature results in other artistic endeavors, as well. For example, his carefully curled and treated sycamore leaves make beautiful decorations or keepsakes. His designs reflect his unique, honest, and straightforward personality, but this should not be confused with simplicity, as the authentic creations imbue sophistication and beauty.

If it is artistry you desire, Philip L. Standifer is undoubtedly the man you want. Do you have a special event, gem of a place, or outstanding individual in the Fernandina area that deserves recognition? Send suggestions to janleggiohodges@gmail.com

Paul Anka April 3 Times-Union Center

musicology Singer, songwriter, and entertainer Paul Anka is coming to Jacksonville for one night only! Among Anka’s proudest accomplishments was writing the Academy Award-nominated theme for “The Longest Day,” the 1962 film in which he also starred. Songwriting and performing “are what gave me the confidence to keep going,” he says. Becoming a junior associate of Sinatra and the Rat Pack also had its privileges. By the ‘70s, the success of “My Way” and a string of hits like “(You’re) Having My Baby” confirmed his status as an icon of popular music. His later achievements as a recording artist included “Hold Me ‘Til the Morning Comes,” a hit duet with Peter Cetera in 1983, the Spanish-language album “Amigos” in 1996, and “Body of Work,” a 1998 duets album that featured Frank Sinatra, Celine Dion, Patti LaBelle, Tom Jones and daughter Anthea Anka.

By the ‘70s, the success of “My Way” and a string of hits like “(You’re) Having My Baby” confirmed his status as an icon of popular music.

Anka’s two most recent albums – “Rock Swings” and now “Classic Songs, My Way” – ingeniously featured songs originally created by some of the biggest rock performers of the day – as well as other established artists across several genres. The twist: Anka did the songs “his way.” Rock Swings went Top 10 in the UK, and was certified gold in the UK, France, and Canada, hit No. 2 on Billboard’s Top Jazz Albums chart and went on to sell half a million units worldwide.

GRIZ

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

In a world where there seems to be only hardship and heartless desolation between strangers of the same flesh, we seek out the chirping of an everlasting song bird that sings of hope. Lucky for this generation we have been given just that. A Detroit producer and musician named GRIZ, born Grant Kwiecinski, who at the powerful age of 23 through his own fluid beats of passion has become one of the next artists to watch in the world of revolutionary music. We are no longer alone in the fight for more unique music. From atop a steel tree of his own perseverance, in effort to reach the tired and crumbling, he sings a tune. GRIZ gives the listener a sense of freedom through his music by allowing for growth in his talent and not restricting himself into any one style. Pulling from his youthful mentors like Squarepusher and Aphex Twin, GRIZ produces a sax-infused beat that can clear any dance floor of dust and decay to once again bring the people together. Some will say in years to come, this was the heartbeat that got the people motivated to heal the scaring graffiti off their building’s bones and rebuild hope. Passing his almost sporadic energy off the stage and delivering it to the crowd in the form of untamed passion. With only a flick of the beat the electric music lights up the darkness and the Blues undertone brings style to the deeper emotions that haunt both GRIZ and his fans. If you’ve been looking for that next addictive band that you simply can’t let go, this is it. GRIZ extends to you his positive alternative to living in silence and shades in a way that relates to everyone. Swaggering onto the Freebird stage on April 24th at 8 p.m., GRIZ will show you that you’re not out of moves and music can still be fresh, even if the air is not.

Thomas Wynn & The Believers STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: “Southern Rock Muscle ~ Soulful Rock n’

Blues” Orlando Sentinel.

A combination of blistering rock and southern soul, Thomas Wynn and The Believers is a 5-piece fiery ensemble playing the original music circuit, touring nationally and making “believers” wherever they go. If you like Tom Petty, The Band, The Black Crowes, CCR & Pink Floyd, you’ll love TWTB. Known for their powerful LIVE performances, TWTB is currently on tour with the likes of JJ Grey & Mofro and The Revivalists. REAX Magazine recently said… “For once, you have a Florida band that is truly Florida. They look like Florida, they sound like Florida – with a touch of Molly Hatchett, The Band, Neil Young, and The Black Crowes. Not fad hipster, not transplant Florida, but Florida Florida. These guys are on the leading edge of creating a new southern rock scene. The sum of the parts is the strongest live shows in the region. Powerful melodies and hooks, grinding jams with soaring guitars and tight drum work, and a front man that carries the audience to new heights.”

GreyMarket STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: GreyMarket is a rock

band hailing from Tampa, Florida. Influenced early on by the likes of Radiohead, Muse, and Led Zeppelin, drummer Michael Gargiulo and guitarist / vocalist Cave McCoy set about creating their own brand of epic rock music. Rather than disrupting their musical chemistry by trying to find other musicians with the same vision, the pair elected to fuse with laptop-powered electronics, adding sweeping strings, buzzing synths, and pounding sine-wave bass to their arsenal. The band’s single greatest asset is its ability to put on a compelling live show, fueled by commanding stage presence and technical innovation. In a close second place is the duo’s commitment to self-sufficiency, and willingness to do whatever it takes to get the job done right. This includes recording, mixing, and mastering their own material, booking their own tours, and creating and managing their web presence themselves. Oftentimes, the band reflects its cinematic influences more than its musical ones. Though inflections of Supertramp, Gomez, and Genesis may creep through, more evident are the likes of “2001: A Space Odyssey,” “Blade Runner,” and “Star Wars.” After all, every song should tell a story.

GAME FACE

BRENT MARTINEAU

Sports Director at

Local Athletes of Jacksonville Red Bryant

Jaguars<Defense

The Jacksonville Jaguars newest big man on the defensive line is Red Bryant. The 324 pounder played for Gus Bradley in Seattle and won a Super Bowl with the Seahawks this past year. Bryant signed a four year deal with the Jaguars at the age of 29. He is considered a leader in the locker room and a perfect fit for the defense the Jags employ with Bradley as the head coach. Bryant’s given first name is Joseph and he has blocked four field goals in his career.

WILL GRIER

Gators<Quarterback

Will Grier could be the future quarterback of the Florida Gators. The highly touted recruit is a freshman from North Carolina and will look to compete for the starting job with Jeff Driskel during spring and summer camp. Grier once threw for 837 yards and 10 touchdowns in a high school game. He also made news recently during spring break when he gave his shoes to a homeless man.

CHAD HENNE

Jaguars<Quarterback

The Jacksonville Jaguars re-signed quarterback Chad Henne in March. The veteran signal caller agreed to a two year deal with the Jaguars after earning the support of the upper management in the 2013 season. Henne threw 13 touchdowns against 14 interceptions last year, but the Jags now have a quarterback they can rely on to start or come off the bench in 2014. Henne is a Michigan graduate who spent the early part of his career with the Miami Dolphins.

LOUIS NIX

TBA<Defense

Louis Nix is an NFL Draft prospect out of Raines High School. The defensive tackle played his college ball at Notre Dame and is considered a first round prospect despite injuring his knee during the 2013 season. The 331 pound man in the middle was an all-state player for Raines in 2009. Nix also played basketball for the Vikings. He is a great follow on twitter @1IrishChocolate.

THE PLAY BY PLAY

WITH COLE PEPPER

CHRIS PETERS

General Manager of the Jacksonville Suns

Chris Peters is the General Manager of the Jacksonville Suns. Entering his 6th year with the Suns, Peters is a Florida graduate who has spent the bulk of his career in minor league baseball in the Sunshine state. His year kicks into high gear as the Suns season opens April 3 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. BUZZ: What does a minor league GM do? Is it at all the same as a major league GM? Chris P.: Being a Minor League GM is much different than a Major League GM. In the Major leagues you are in charge of all player personnel decisions. At the minor league level the GM oversees advertising sales, ticket sales, stadium operations, promotions and much more. Our job is to make sure that each fan has an enjoyable time when they come to a game and that they have a great experience. BUZZ: Anything new for fans in 2014? Chris P.: In 2014 we do have some exciting new promotions that we can’t wait for. On June 6th Mountain Man from Duck Dynasty will be making an appearance at our game and signing autographs for fans. Another promotion is on Saturday, May 10th the Suns will be wearing Pink jerseys during the game that will be auctioned off to raise money for Breast Cancer Research. Opening Night we will be debuting our Legends of Jacksonville Baseball display and the first 3,000 fans will

get a card set of all of the legends. We will also be adding an all you can eat Shrimp Buffet on all Saturday night home games with our friends from Sea Best. BUZZ: Are you expecting big crowds in April? Chris P.: April is always a big month for us. You can always feel the excitement as the season starts and baseball season begins. The weather is beautiful and we have some great promotions to kick off the season as well. BUZZ: Thursday Throwdowns and Sunday games are very popular. Is there a “hidden gem” kind of day that you particularly enjoy? Chris P.: We have something great on every day of the week but one night that does fly under the radar is our Belly Buster Mondays. On all Monday nights you can get a HomePlate Box Ticket plus an all you can eat buffet of hot dogs, burgers, popcorn, soda and ice cream for just $20. April 2014 • www.iwantaBUZZ.com

Training for your next Triathlon

Training for a triathlon can seem a bit overwhelming to someone new to the sport. You have three sports to train for and may only have a limited amount of skill and time to train. Finding a good program is the best way to go about starting your training regime. Here is what a beginner or first-timer should look for in a triathlon training program: 1. COACHING: Since you may be new to one or more of the events, it is important to have proper coaching. A coach can help you improve technique and become more efficient at a sport. 2. DAILY TRAINING CALENDAR: A calendar will help you stay on target with your goals and will help you organize your training so that it does not interfere with your regular schedule and life.

FLEXIBILITY: Families, jobs, commitments and hectic schedules keep us busy. It is important that the program you choose allows you to be flexible. If you can’t make it to a pool to swim, you can go for a run or head to the gym for strength training. 4. SUPPORT AND GEAR (SAG): As you get closer to your event, your training’s should become longer and more intense. Having support in the form of water and food stops, and equipment and gear support will be important. 5. TEAM: Training for a triathlon on your own can be difficult. Find a program that provides and encourages a team environment. It’s easier to get out of bed on a Saturday morning if you know that others will be there with you. 6. A CAUSE: It is often easier to train for an endurance event, such as a triathlon, if you know the ultimate goal is to support a good cause.

What is the First Coast Sports Injury Symposium presented by Florida Blue and its importance to our community?

This symposium is an annual educational event organized by the Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program (JSMP) for our area health care providers. With the increasingly large number of sports participants each year there is an increased risk of injury including, sports related concussion. This symposium brings in local and national experts to address this topic and other deadly risks in sports.

What educational value is there for our physicians, parents and administrators?

This symposium provides an opportunity for our local Pediatricians, Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine physicians and Orthopedic Surgeons to become updated on the latest research and knowledge in sports medicine. Certified athletic trainers, physical therapists and health care workers will also benefit from this program as well as the general public. School administrators and teachers also benefit from this level concussion education as sometimes academic accommodations are necessary during recovery. In addition, parents require proper concussion education, as they are often the first people to recognize that something is not right and need to be able to identify signs and symptoms that may help physicians diagnose a concussion.

What is a Notice to Appear in a criminal case? A notice to appear (NTA) is a piece of paper the officer will hand you if he is not going to arrest you right there on the spot. The NTA will tell you to schedule your court date to appear in front of the judge. So, in reality an NTA is an order to appear in court. If the officer gives you an NTA, he does not think that you are a flight risk. This does not happen in DUI cases. A typical example when a NTA is given, would be for a first time petit theft.

What is a misdemeanor in Florida? Misdemeanors are divided into categories: • 1st degree misdemeanors are more severe and carry a maximum penalty up to 1 year in jail and up to $1000.00 fine. • 2nd degree misdemeanors have a maximum penalty of up to 60 days and $500.00 fine. INSIDE LOOK

Tell us about the Treasury?

The Treasury on the Plaza is a grand wedding and event venue, rich in heritage and located at one of the most prestigious addresses in America’s Oldest city. Positioned in St. Augustine’s first and only skyscraper, the six-story edifice and its mezzanine typify the glamour of the 1920s in this Mediterranean revival building.

What’s unique about this amazing venue?

Since 1928, the towering venue served as St. Augustine’s landmark bank on Cathedral Place. The newly designed Treasury on the Plaza embraces its past from the Roaring 20s yet looks toward a new, celebratory era as a refined destination for dramatic wedding receptions, gala events, business functions and distinctive private parties. The renovation of what many St. Augustinians still call The Exchange Bank Building adds another jewel to the historic district and the business area surrounding the Plaza. In addition to its core mission as a commercial wedding and event destination, The Treasury on the Plaza will also serve as a meeting place for events in the St. Augustine community, including the Cathedral Basilica next door and the City of St. Augustine.

e were able to speak Co-owner Brenda Bushell regarding the details on her and John Arbizanni’s new business venture, Treasury on the Plaza. This former bank, now beautifully renovated, 1920’s spot for new nuptials, gorgeous galas and private parties, is sure to be one magnificently memorable location for event planners and fun-seeking social gatherers!

Interview by Monica Stouder

What made you want to start this adventure?

John Arbizanni, my business partner and I are both involved as volunteers with our neighbor to The Treasury, The Cathedral Basilica. When we heard the bank was vacating the building and there were plans to turn it into a marketplace, John suggested we join forces and renovate it as an events venue.

Any interesting historical or renovation stories regarding this location?

Everything about our renovation and new business has been inspired by the fact that this building, built in 1928 and listed on the National Register of Historic Properties - has always been a bank. Our name - The Treasury on the Plaza, The Vault - providing the perfect location for a very sexy bar, The Banker Lounge - now a club like space for the Groom and his groomsmen, The Plaza Lounge - a wonderful place for the Bride and her attendants to gather, The Exchange Gallery - an adjacent gallery space for weddings and cocktail hours, inspired from the original name, The Exchange Bank. This jewel of a location and historical space has found new meaning for the future - completely inspired by its’ past.

Sourcing Suds By Brain Little

Brew Time By Marc Wisdom In the early years of the Church, springtime in Bavaria meant the observance of Lent and a time of fasting for devout Catholics and monks. So, to maintain nutrition, the ever resourceful monks devised a means of staying nourished while still staying within the rules of the Church by brewing and drinking beers of the Bock style.

Follow me on twitter @beerapostle

There are many sub-styles of Bock that range from the rich, but relatively mild Bock to the uber-strong Eisbock that generally drinks smoothly, but tops out at over 12% ABV. The Bock families of brews are generally strong, malty, big-bodied lagers that present little or no hop character. The brews tend to be sweet and intense or deceivingly dry and smooth. But, all are traditional lagers of spring in the land of edelweiss. The style was first brewed in the 14th century by German brewers in Einbeck. Later, in the 17th century, the style was adapted to the lager style of brewing, but retained the name Einbeck. Due to their Bavarian accent, citizens of Munich pronounced “Einbeck” as “ein Bock” and thus the beer became known as “bock.”

Serve these strong, satisfying beers with spicy German sausages or strong cheeses. GOLDEN TAP BEER OF THE MONTH

“Sourcing Suds” is a new column by the Beer Apostle, Brian Little. Sourcing Suds recognizes locally brewed beer being served at locally operated beer spots. As the Beer Apostle, Brian seeks to spread the good-news-message of craft brews, and acknowledges the people and places making the Jacksonville beer community what it is. Join him each month as he highlights a different craft beer location and a locally-brewed beer from their tap list. SOURCE: Brewer’s Pizza, Orange Park, BrewersPizza.com Handcrafted pizza and beer, there may not be a better combination. Brewer’s Pizza is Orange Park’s only brewpub, providing a unique combination of locally made pizzas and brews.

The monks of the St. Francis of Paula order (Paulaner) began brewing the flagship of the bock style – dopplebock – in 1634. The thick and creamy beer featured chocolate and toffee-flavor notes and alcohol contents of six to seven and a half percent per volume. Later in the spring, the eyes of young Bavarian men may turn to the tasty brews known as Maibocks. These brews are thick and chewy, presenting deep roasted flavors of caramel malts and fruity esters.

Marc Wisdom is man who still believes in the Easter bunny, but still loves hasenpfeffer – he is deeply conflicted. Read more about his favorite beverage at: JaxBeerGuy.com

Brewer’s is also home to, Pinglehead Brewing Co., and has been serving Brewer’s patrons Pinglehead beer since 2011. According to Chief Beer Officer, Steve Halford, “Pinglehead beers are brewed for beer-lovers seeking aggressive beer flavors and styles.” Beer with Attitude, as Pinglehead’s slogan goes.

Upcoming Events:

SUDS: Mind Drive Extreme Imperial Porter

Meet fellow wine enthusiasts and beer lovers in your area to taste and learn more about libations from local aficionados, Marc Wisdom (Jax Beer Guy) and Brian Little (The Beer Apostle). All are welcome, whether you are a novice or connoisseur. The mission of this “Meetup” is to have fun and enjoy your favorite drinks with new friends!

Mind Drive is an “Extreme” Imperial Porter with an alcohol by volume level of nearly 14%. It’s a two-time, medalwinning beer that has started to create a bit of a name for itself. Mind Drive has taken home a Gold and Bronze medal, respectively, in each of the past two years at the Best Florida Beer Championship. Mind Drive is a rich and boozy porter that provides bold and complex flavors. It’s an aromatic beer that delivers on all levels. It boasts a stout-like appearance with deep flavors that come to life on the palate. Milk chocolate sweetness, raisins, and roasted grains are followed by coffee, molasses, and vanilla. The finish is slightly bitter with a robust smokiness that is a pleasant surprise. This full-bodied beer lives up to its name of being an extreme imperial porter, and is most certainly a “Beer with Attitude.”

Anchor Bock Beer is a satiny, dark brew from the San Francisco brewer that is brewed from a complex blend of malts, and fresh, whole-cone hops. The beer presents flavors of caramel and brown bread with a hint of molasses, but the malts almost take a back seat to the spicy, earthy, herbal hops, with hints of licorice, green leaf, grape, and a noble floral perfume. Definitely more hops than is typical for a bock but it works. Serve with rich game such as venison or even rabbit or with dark chocolate deserts like German Chocolate cake.

My Brother John and I wanted to do a high-end burger concept with a prohibition theme. We began coming up with different names as a nod to the era and wanted to stand out with our brand. “The Blind Rabbit” we believe is a unique concept offering a great mix of spirits and burger. Burgers.Whiskey.Moonshine.

Yes! Our entire draft line is dedicated to local breweries. We don’t just pour locally produced beer - it’s the relationship that we have with these breweries. We are huge supporters of the Craft Beer Scene and the great people behind it! Intuition Ale Works, Bold City Brewery, Green Room Brewing Co., Engine 15, Aardwolf Brewing Co., Pinglehead, Swamp Head, Cigar City! We also use as many spirits we can find produced nearby.

What is unique about your bar area? We started with a selection of over 100 bourbons and whiskies and now we carry over 200. We offer a niche market for the whiskey drinker. We can accommodate from the beginner to the sophisticated whiskey drinker. We also carry over 40 moonshine varieties at the bar. Tell us about your best selling drink Blackberry Lemonade – Four Roses Small Batch Bourbon, Fresh Blackberries, Mint, Lemon. This is a great refreshing cocktail for the beginner or the pro. Well rounded sweet, sour, herbal and the perfect punch!

What do you want more people to know about your business? We make everything from scratch - from the juice and the bar bitters in the cocktails to the fries. We are out to produce the best product we can and great service. We believe in the community and are very excited to be a part of The Beaches Restaurant Scene.

What was the last big change you made to your drink menu? We change it constantly. Weekly we try to keep with the seasons. The Plant City Strawberry Mint Julep!

I know, I know. You’re thinking, “Beer, grapefruit, brie and grandma’s apple crisp? What the what?” Welcome to the delicious world of craft beers! This Schofferhofer Grapefruit Brie Apple Crisp will conjure up some of those wonderful grandma’s cooking memories, but it will also bring you into the new(ish) & exciting world of craft beer, and all the fabtastic foods you can create. Alone, this Schofferhofer Grapefruit hefeweizen is refreshing to the taste buds and nose, worthy of any spring fling or summer pool party. With some fresh fruit and brie, it becomes Oscar worthy. Because of the brie, this dish can be used as either an appetizer or dessert. I personally tried some for breakfast, and it was incredible. Because I run on the hedonistic side, I also tried equal parts of Schofferhofer Grapefruit and champagne. Move over mimosa, there’s a new sheriff in town! YUM!!! I hope that you get as much enjoyment out of this recipe as I have!

SCHOFFERHOFER GRAPEFRUIT BRIE APPLE CRISP INGREDIENTS 5 lbs. apples, peeled, cored & cut into wedges 12 oz. brie, cut into very small cubes 1/2 cup Schofferhofer Grapefruit 1/2 cup sugar 1 tsp. ground cinnamon 1/4 tsp. nutmeg 1 tbsp. tapioca 1 1/2 cups flour 1 cup sugar 1/2 cup light brown sugar 1/2 tsp. kosher salt 1/2 cup finely chopped almonds 1/4 tsp. cinnamon 1 cup oatmeal 1 cup unsalted butter, cut into very small cubes

DIRECTIONS Combine apples and next 6 ingredients. Pour into greased 9×12 inch baking dish. Combine remaining ingredients in food processor by pulsing and just until combined. Drop over apple mixture. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit until topping is browned and filling is bubbly. Let stand for a few minutes before serving. It’ll be VERY hot! Enjoy!

Etiquette Essentials

PROFESSOR DUBIOUS IS THE MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE PERSON IN THE WORLD BY A LARGE MARGIN. HERE, HE DEIGNS TO RESPOND TO YOUR ILL-INFORMED QUERIES.

Gym Class Etiquette One day my son brings me a teacher’s note. It concerned some minor misbehavior. Not finishing assignments, not taking his lessons seriously, and talking out of turn… he had overall bad etiquette in class. I asked my son if I could see the assignments. He brought me a paper with a list of exercises he was supposed to complete each week. I looked at the note again, and realized it was from the gym teacher. This is third grade, and he’s in trouble with the gym teacher.

What is the purpose of the appendix? - J. Hatbilder; Seattle, WA

Professor Dubious Says: The appendix is

part of the nervous system and functions as an extra brain. It is called on by the main brain when an important decision is to be made and a second opinion is needed. For instance, say you’re trying to decide what to buy your wife for her birthday and you’re considering a blender. Your appendix might remind you that the last time you bought her a kitchen implement as a gift, your wife got really passiveaggressive and started over-salting your food. Eventually most people’s brains will come to realize that their appendix is too high-maintenance and more trouble than it’s worth, and stop consulting it altogether.

Why do dogs sing show tunes when they’re hungry? - S. Louis; Bearton, IN

Professor Dubious Says: You’re

confusing dogs with my Uncle Felix. Dogs wag their tails when they’re hungry, whereas when my Uncle Felix is hankering for a feeding, he belts out selections from “Bye Bye Birdie” in a fedora and a “Hello Kitty” scarf. The other difference between the two is that dogs turn around several times before they sit down, whereas Uncle Felix has a goiter with such a malodorous stench that he’s been banned from the local mall, all Denny’s restaurants, and the bed he used to share with my Aunt Huffy.

I wasn’t trying to undermine the guy’s authority, but how could I help laughing. This was funny to me. My son was getting a warning for not completing his gym homework… But in the end, I told him he’d have to do the exercises. Three weeks later, I get a report from the gym teacher concerning my son’s progress. He was completing assignments on time now, and taking better interest in the “lessons.” The gym teacher ended up giving him an award for greatest overall improvement in the class. He also preached to my son several times about the importance of extracurricular sports. After which, my son decided he’d tryout for the basketball team. Now my son is in high school. He’s a star player on the basketball team, and one of the top distance runners in cross-country. He constantly lectures me about the dangers of smoking, drinking coffee, eating unhealthy foods, and only sleeping four hours a night. He pesters me to get off the computer and jog with him… which I sometimes feel obligated to do. But I rarely make it to the end of the street before I have to sit down and beat my chest until my heart starts again. To this day, I hate that freaking gym teacher.

April Horoscope

Written by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

ARIES (MARCH 21- APRIL 19)

Your birthday is very near. Thus, expect a more dynamic social life now. It’s a new game for relationships, so freshen up your appearance. If you can’t freshen up yours, take your less attractive friends out with you. That should help some.

TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20)

Something is brewing with a friend this month. You will find yourself bonding with said friend that is more than just casual. A friendship may be burnt if you’re the only one falling in love, but I am sure you have plenty of friends to take a test run on.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 21)

Romance is strong for you right now. Even if the object of your affection isn’t available, you can’t past this up. Find someone else for the time being and try explaining it later. Carpe diem!

CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 22)

Try getting your surroundings in order, and surprisingly, this will lead to an upgrade in your personal life. And upgrades are always good. Speaking of, let’s try letting go of that lazy anchor called your mate, who’s been holding you back. Toss him/her overboard already.

LEO (JULY 23 – AUGUST 22)

No one likes a nag, especially you Leo. So why don’t you save us some headaches and quit being one yourself. So things aren’t falling your way as they usually do. Deal with it. The rest of us manage this every month without launching into a complaint machine.

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 22)

I notice you are still looking for that perfect situation before you will jump into it. Well, if you have not caught on, they don’t exist and you won’t be jumping anytime soon. Go ahead; keep waiting while life passes you by. Great plan.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 22)

horrendous for the rest of us. This is all you will talk and talk and talk about for the next month. Can’t wait to hear about these same stories forever.

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 – NOVEMBER 21)

Scorpio, love is heating up rather quickly on you. So fast, you may not know what’s going on, or where your next move is going. But don’t worry it will be over soon. Seeing you won’t be able to control it, you will ruin this fun in no time.

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 – DECEMBER 21)

Seems the person you’re with, or working on, isn’t quite getting the picture. Maybe they’re just plain dumb. I’m sure that’s what it is. So quit any games and tell them straight out how you feel. If they still don’t get it, buy them a lollipop, pat them on the head and forget about them.

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 – JANUARY 19)

Looks like you are up to no good this month. Playful is always a fun time. Go crazy and see what romance you can strike up. But don’t wait around; next month isn’t looking to be as good as this one. Mischievous and on the prowl; get to it.

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 – FEBRUARY 18)

This is where I say a bunch of crap about you taking the first step in a relationship instead of trying to play it cool. But you won’t listen, so we could just jump to the end and I can say I told you so. You want to play this out? Fine. Be more assertive and you will find love this month.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20)

The Moon wraps up his monthly visit to your romantic sector and will attempt to convince you of what’s possible. Your job now is to believe what your heart is telling you. Which we both know isn’t much and the Moon is just wasting his time.

Some fun nights are on the horizon for you Libra. The type that could be mind blowing fun. That’s great for you but April 2014 • www.iwantaBUZZ.com
