After a two-year national search, the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens has a new CEO. Adam Levine started the job as 2019 kicked off. He replaces Hope McMath, who led the Cummer for years before going on to found the arts organization Yellow House. Levine comes to Jacksonville from a prior position as deputy director and curator for ancient art at the Toledo (OH) Museum of Art. Before that, Levine worked as collections management assistant in the Greek and Roman art department at the

That celebration dovetailed nicely with an important exhibit open right now at the Cummer, “Augusta Savage: Renaissance Woman.” “It’s exciting to spotlight the work of a local artist, Augusta Savage, who was an African-American woman from Green Cove Springs and became an incredibly important figure in the Harlem Renaissance,” he said. After that exhibit closes, Levine says patrons can look forward to a show of Impressionist and post-Impressionist paintings. “French Moderns: Monet to Matisse,” will feature 60 works of art from the Brooklyn Museum’s European collection. MAKING A DIFFERENCE Leaders in our community

Our collaboration supports both of our missions and also supports our health and wellness program at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Jacksonville by ensuring that our nutrition program always has a stable pantry of wholesome foods for our families.

RONALD MCDONALD HOUSE RMHC.ORG

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Jacksonville earlier last year partnered with Feeding Northeast Florida, a hunger relief organization and food bank that works with local grocery stores, manufacturers, and farms to rescue high-quality food and transform it into meals for those in need. The partnership, which entails Feeding Northeast Florida providing nutritional food items each week, further supports Ronald McDonald House Charity of Jacksonville’s health and wellness program. Each year, Ronald McDonald House Charities of Jacksonville supports the health and wellbeing of more than 1,000 families of critically ill children seeking care at local medical treatment facilities. Through Ronald McDonald House Charities of Jacksonville’s health and wellness program, families are provided three nutritious meals, including a home cooked dinner every day of the week.

Welcome to this month’s Fashion Focus— the best of the bold and unique bag trends for 2019. These top five bags are here to make carrying your entire make-up bag or a change of clothes super easy in 2019, with the oversized clutch. Traditional cross body bags are gone and the multi-strap bags of the coming season prove carrying your possessions by a single strap is just so last year. The ring handle bag has been around for a while. With the summer straw bag however, this season, they are bolder and more decorative, a true accessory to your outfit. Last year’s Bum bags had their moment again from Gucci. However, this year’s bag isn’t casual or slouchy, it’s useful, sleek, occasionally super teeny but definitely more up-market and chic. Finally feathers; From tiny little feathered clutches, right through to giant feather totes, the size is irrelevant —it’s the embellishment that matters for this trend. 6

Ronald McDonald House Charities of Jacksonville’s Executive Director, Diane Boyle said this of the new community partnership, “We are excited to enter into this important partnership with Feeding Northeast Florida. Together, we will make a difference in providing nutritious meals to our families. Our collaboration supports both of our missions and also supports our health and wellness program at Ronald McDonald House Charities of Jacksonville by ensuring that our nutrition program always has a stable pantry of wholesome foods for our families.” Feeding Northeast Florida President and CEO, Frank D. Castillo was pleased with the official launch stating, “So many families in Jacksonville and beyond are one unexpected life event away from needing food assistance. The work that Ronald McDonald House Charities of Jacksonville does on behalf of children needing medical treatment is critical. As the region’s largest hunger-relief network, we are proud to come alongside them in this effort to ensure that these families have the nourishment they need. Through this strategic partnership, we are making sure these families do not have to worry from where their next meal will come and can have the healthy food necessary for their child to get well.” Thank you Ronald McDonald House and Feeding Northeast Florida for making a difference in the Jacksonville Community!

ARTS UNLEASHED

Artfields ArtFieldsSc.org

Desiree Kantrim DesireeFineArts.com

Desiree was born on the border between France and Germany. She also lived in Canada and Costa Rica, and finally settled in Florida. She holds a BFA degree from Meisterschule Offenbach and her art is as varied as her background. Art has always been an integral part of her life. She could always be found drawing, sculpting in clay or designing and weaving textiles, but as of late has concentrated on her painting. Having lived and traveled all over the globe, from Canada to Costa Rica and from Capetown to Kathmandu, her art has been influenced and gone through many changes. Nature has always been a source of never ending fascination and even her abstracts are often grounded in nature itself. She has been featured in many local group and solo exhibitions, including the Karpeles Museum, Beaches Fine Arts Series, the Thrasher Horne Center, the JCA and the “ART after Dark” exhibit as well as in many private collections She is currently a member of The Art Center Cooperative and her work can be seen at their gallery at The Landing.

Artfields is an art show held in Lake City, South Carolina showcasing the work of artists from nine southern states. The idea of Artfields was conceived by a group of town leaders that were trying to find a way to revitalize a town that had significant economic impact from the loss of their local tobacco industry. They saw art as their salvation and started Artfields six years ago. Florida is one of the nine states included, but the Jacksonville area had not had a lot of participation. However, local artist Deborah Reid made a fortuitous visit to South Carolina and learned of the show. Deborah invited Jamison Mady, Program Manager to tell their story to Jacksonville artists. Barbara Colaciello hosted the event at Bab’s Labs to a house full of local artists. Many left the event excited about this “new” opportunity and applied. At the beginning of the year, 11 area artists received the news that their entries had been accepted. Included were: Kevin Arthur, Mary Atwood, Count Calloway, Jeffrey Luque, Ed Malesky, Jan Tomlinson Master, C. L. McCain, Laird, Masha Sardari, Jim Smith, Traci Mims. There were only 400 entries selected in total, so this is a testament to the great art this area is producing. Artfields is from April 26 to May 4th.

Osake Buffet offers crab legs, New York strip steak, jumbo shrimp, and cooked to order Hibachi table, an array of freshly prepared sushi and Asian cuisine favorites, plus fresh salads and fruit, and dessert. On the weekend lobster is included on the buffet.

Welcome to my Foodie Minute! Traveling overseas can sometimes create some confusion when it comes to the do’s and dont’s of dining. I’m here to remind you of what NOT to do when you’re abroad. Lets start in France! DON’T order your steak well done. The chef is going to prepare it rare to medium rare regardless, so if you don’t like it a little red, steer towards the chicken. Another big no-go: DON’T ask for bread before your meal! But don’t worry, the bread will finally show up with your meal. Lets head over to Italy! You’ve ordered the perfect seafood dish and you want to add a little cheese? DON’T do it! Italians do not believe in altering the delicate flavors of the perfect seafood dish. While I’m at it, let me remind you, YOU must request your check when you are ready. Otherwise you will sit there all night! It is considered rude to rush a diner in Europe. Ciào!

We indulged ourselves with many of the offerings, and much to my delight everything I sampled was well prepared, tasty. All the items were to the correct temperature plus the staff was keeping the buffet trays full and counter areas clean. With my cravings for all things Asian I can certainly back this newest entry into the Jacksonville food scene and will make a return trip. Seating is plentiful, plus there are several rooms set aside for large family style dining, first come first serve. Osake Buffet is the perfect

venue to bring your family and friends for an evening of feasting.

THE BYRDS

Roger McGuinn and co-founder Chris Hillman, of the 1960’s folkrock group, The Byrds teamed up with Country artist Marty Stuart and his Fabulous Superlatives Monday night. The Ponte Vedra Concert Hall was nearly sold-out and the venue was part of the band’s year-long tour named Sweetheart of the Rodeo.

Blue Jay is a beautifully sacred, intimate space that allows you to come listen, expand your musical knowledge and share in an experience you will never forget. With several different bands every night, you can enjoy a variety of genres as bands from near and far come to perform.

The audience clearly enjoyed McGuinn’s stories leading up to the creation of some of their most famous tunes. Artists such as Bob Dylan who wrote the lyric for Tambourine Man had a completely different beat than the Byrds. McGuinn demonstrated that difference, before launching into their famous version, brings the crowd to their feet.

Other notable tunes on their set-list were My Back Pages, Mr. Spaceman, and Drugstore Truck Driving Man. Roger McGuinn is scheduled to return on the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall on March 16, and tickets are for sale at PVConcertHall.com. NAME web

CATCHIN' A BUZZ

NIGHTLIFE TOP 5

Interview by Anna Eatz Jax

MARLON HALL Bartender

LIVE MUSIC every Sunday night

MLG

LynchsIrishPub.com

Chilula is a dance band from St. Augustine and is featured every Sunday night at Lynch’s. Chilula provides new, fun twists on your favorite songs, from Afroman to Jason Mraz. Catch them March 24.

Is there a philosophy behind the MLG drinks program?

Our idea is to give people what they want to drink. We have an extensive bar but are trying to stay away from craft cocktail. I think the craft industry has come and gone, Jacksonville is 10 to 15 behind cities like New York, Chicago or San Francisco. We want to give them a good drink that they don’t have to wait 10 or 15 minutes.

Writing the Cathchin’ A BUZZ column is one of my favorite assignments. It allows me to meet some of the most exciting people in the food and beverage industry; today was no exception. I made my way down to the newest hot spot in downtown Jacksonville MLG to meet with Marlon Hall for an early morning interview and learn more about what makes Marlon tick and what a fun morning it was.

Tell me a little bit about yourself and how you got into the business?

I have been in the service industry since 1995. I started as a server, then one day someone did not show up for their bar shift, I was asked to fill in the rest is history. I then left home and went to New York to study acting and like most actors do you wait tables, and bartend between gigs. My experience was a little different, I was surrounded by passionate people and learned that I could make an excellent living working in the bar industry. I moved from New York to Jacksonville and started working at some of Jacksonville’s great iconic restaurants, and my career blossomed from that point forward.

How did you get involved with MLG?

So Ted Hayes, who is the restaurant manager here at MLG and I opened Candy Apple together. Once Marcus Lemonis who owns this building housing Sweet Pete’s brought his idea here for the restaurant, he asked for us to return, and when Marcus Lemonis calls you answer.

What can you tell us about the MLGs drink menu? So being in this building and attempting to do our own thing yet stay true to the candy store and the child-centric nature of the structure we have a mix. We offer a few dessert style cocktails on the sweeter side and a few classics as well. We cater to everybody, you can have a Chocolate Martini, a Classic Daiquiri, or you can order a shot and a beer. That’s what our menu entails. We could evolve into a craft cocktail bar, we are so new here and feeling out our client base to see what they want to drink. Making the cocktail is the part I like the best; I usually request a cocktail with the recipe, Marlon has his agenda so we will have two smashing cocktails this go round.

MARCH HOROSCOPE

by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

ARIES (MARCH 21- APRIL 19) Three words this month, “one night stand.” That is all the advice you will need. Temptation will be swimming all around you, but zero chance on love. So go with the flow; have fun and be try to be responsible. Smiles for everyone.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 22) Blah, blah, blah. Oh, you’re talking about yourself again. Shocker. If you keep talking only about yourself, you will be stuck with just that. How about less you, you, you, and maybe…shut-up. Listen and watch people hate you less.

TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20) Space and lots of it. Instead of being your normal clingy self, you are craving space. You know that breathing room you never give anyone else? Yeah, feels good doesn’t it? Enjoy some solitude and independence before you go latching on again next month.

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 – NOVEMBER 21) Your current love interests are going to bore you this month. Not necessarily a bad thing. Boring things are just a delight. That’s why we all aspire to be boring. Oh wait! That’s the opposite of true. When one becomes boring change him or her, or just change relationships.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 21) Seriously, what’s up with all the questions? (Did you catch that pun?) You need to quit asking so many questions. Not only are you annoying your mate or any future love connection, you are also annoying me. Relax and fake some confidence.

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 – DECEMBER 21) It’s not a falling out. Keep telling yourself this. Those mated Sagittarius will need to rekindle that “fire” in their relationship and singles need to keep swinging even though striking out has been second nature of late. It’s just a lull. Keep telling yourself this.

CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 22) Crazy nights are in your future. Grab a close friend, spouse, maybe an Aries, whomever, and take a run on the “fun” side. Everything you read about and see on Las Vegas commercials could become a tiny sliver of reality this month for you.

CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 – JANUARY 19) Oh wow, you’re just on fire this month. Cupid struck you and you’ve be hot ever since. Other signs will fine you oozing with mojo and magnetism. You absolutely make me sick (with jealousy of course, for I am not a Capricorn). Take your oozing mojo and enjoy life.

LEO (JULY 23 – AUGUST 22) Unfortunately, work is more important to you than love this month. Got to pay the bills, right? Sure, but try and bust out and see what adventures are around a few times. It’s just work, you can always find another job. I hear they are just everywhere.

AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 – FEBRUARY 18) People won’t exactly be smashing down your door to get to you this month Aquarius. It’s a good month to perfect that recipe on your favorite comfort food. You will be eating a lot of it. Lonely won‘t be forever, it’s just going to feel like it.

VIRGO (AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 22) Looks like things are weighing heavy on you this month. Literally. So you’ve put on some weight and wasted another resolution, but now you can start a new one. Eating Contest Champion has a nice ring to it.

PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20) Look at you Pisces, ya little flirt. Feeling good about yourself are ya? Well, you should. There is a love connection on the horizon, and it could involve you. Yes, you for once Pisces. Just play it cool and not so, “oh no, someone finally likes me!”

By Linda Johnson, Certified Cicerone®

Alewife Craft Beer Bottle Shop and Tasting Room has kicked off its new, expanded “Beer School” program for 2019. Led by co-owner Kelly Pickard, Certified Cicerone®. “Craft Beer 101,” an introductory session for those new to craft beer or those who just want to learn more about what’s in the pint glass, bottle or can. New for 2019, the program will feature 22 classes, including three different tracks designed for beginners, those with existing beer knowledge, and those in the service industry. The “Beginner” track consists of 12 topics, with classes focusing on each of the four main beer ingredients (malt, hops, yeast,

water), and classes delving into specific beer styles. The “Intermediate” track features six classes about style distinction with bling beer tastings, off-flavor training from the Cicerone® program, barrel aging and fermentation, beer sensory training, food-andbeer pairing basics, and beer cellaring and aging. Lastly, the Service Industry segment covers beer ingredients and the brewing process, beer storage and service, beer styles, and draft systems and maintenance, from the Cicerone® program and from Kelly’s personal experience. Since offering its first classes in 2015, Alewife has increased not only the number of classes, but also the topics covered.

Kelly Pickard obtained her Certified Cicerone® credential in 2016, and is one of only a handful of individuals in the Jacksonville area to have achieved the designation, after completing a course of study leading to passing of the two-part, four-hour exam which covers beer, beer history, brewing processes, beer styles, food and beer, off-flavors, and beer tasting and identification. Take a look at the full schedule for Alewife’s 2019 Beer School. Classes generally run for approximately 90 minutes and include beer samplings.
