In 2012, “Once” was the recipient of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical (John Tiffany), Best Book (Enda Walsh), and Best Orchestrations (Martin Lowe). This romantic, quirky show is based on the Irish movie of the same name, detailing the life-changing connection between a pair of musicians known only as Guy and Girl. He is a street singer/songwriter in Dublin who earns money as a vacuum repairman, and she is a Czech immigrant who sells flowers in order to support herself and her family. With music as the catalyst, Guy and Girl embark on a brief, powerful, and transformative journey. Tiffany, Walsh, and Lowe discussed the evolution and creation of “Once.” WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION WHEN YOU WERE INITIALLY APPROACHED ABOUT CREATING A MUSICAL BASED ON THE FILM ONCE?
truthful in that. People have said to me, ‘When I was sitting in the theater watching “Once,” I felt like was watching it with everyone I’ve ever loved, whether or not they’re still in my life.’
JT: When I was approached about “Once,” I hadn’t even seen the film. But one of my best friends said, ‘You will love the music.’ So I downloaded the soundtrack, and absolutely loved it. I’d never heard music like that, and the music is the reason why I wanted to do the show. Not just the music itself, but the fact that it’s a story about creating music, a story about the healing power of music.
THE MOVIE IS THE INSPIRATION FOR THE SHOW, YET YOU HAVE TO WALK A FINE LINE BETWEEN BEING TRUE TO THE FILM AND TRANSFORMING THE MATERIAL FOR THE STAGE. HOW DID YOU START?
EW: John called and said, ‘Let’s take two days, and we can read the screenplay, and listen to the songs, and talk about it.’ So I said, ‘Okay, we’ll do two days. And that’s all we’ll do.’ WHAT DID YOU LEARN DURING THOSE TWO DAYS? JT: Those two days convinced us that we wanted to do this show. We weren’t convinced before that. EW: Very quickly I thought I was a good match for the material. I tend to write characters that are inarticulate and lonesome, and something comes into their life that changes them. And from listening to the songs, I thought it might be good for me to do something about Ireland, which was so hurt in the recession. I thought it would be sweet to do a little love letter to Dublin. That was my way in. WHY DO YOU THINK “ONCE” HAS BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL AS BOTH A FILM AND AS A STAGE MUSICAL? JT: I think what’s very moving about the piece is how sometimes we meet people who we don’t necessarily stay with forever, but they give us the resources to move on to the next part of our life. There’s something very 10

JT: I knew from the beginning that the actors would be the musicians. At that point, I didn’t know the play was going to be set in a bar, but I knew before Enda began to write that we were going to move from one location to another in very simple terms. I told Enda, ‘Write this as if you’re writing a new play, and then let’s choose where the songs go in terms of telling the story.’ In some ways it was obvious, because we followed the structure of the film in terms of where the songs go. But we did make changes, although not radical in terms of the whole. EW: I think the big difference with this show is that we created a community. It’s like a spotlight is shone on these people in Dublin at a specific time, and around it grows romance and creativity. HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO CAST “ONCE?” JT: We need actors who can act brilliantly, move, and play instruments. In a way, casting the first production was the easiest, because we arranged the music around the instruments the actors could play. It was more difficult to cast London and the tour. We found amazing actors, but it took bloody ages. The good thing is Steven won’t compromise, I won’t compromise, and Martin won’t compromise, so if one of us vetoes an actor, then that’s it.

THE CLAY COUNTY AGRICULTURAL FAIR Come out and celebrate 30 years of Down Home Country Fun at the Clay County Agricultural Fair! The fair began on March 31 and will run through April 9. There will be 10 packed days of exciting exhibits and vendors, fair food, 40 rides, livestock shows and auctions, competitions, and more! With such a wide range of variety in events and musical performances, this fair will be no exception to the usual greatness. Bring everyone for the ultimate family experience. Enjoy the Clay County Agricultural Fair events, featuring pig races, caged motocross mania, lawn mower races, and more. There will be several performers on the community stage for all to enjoy, plus musical acts on the main stage starting on April 5. Enjoy the Main Street Parade with performances by the Dennis Lee Band, and Kip Attaways’ Music and Comedy Show. With performers such as Dewayne Spaw, Canaan Smith, A Thousand Horses, Travis Tritt, and Michael Ray, the music and entertainment will be worthwhile. In addition to the different events and performances throughout the fairgrounds, there will be plenty of vendors present to provide food, drinks, snacks, and more. The rides at the Clay County Agricultural Fair will be presented by Deggeller Attractions, who have been recognized and awarded the OABA’s Circle of Excellence, by virtue of their outstanding audit scores in management, presentation, training, and documentation. There is a wide range of rides in rate of intensity, so the attractions will be sure to appeal to all types of guests and all ages. When it comes to livestock, there will be an amazing assortment of many farming based species. Horses, goats, and pigs will be just a fraction of all the animals that will make up the Clay County Agricultural Fairs’ livestock. Shows for each animal will be held throughout different time and days during the fair. With so many options of different events and activities available at The Clay County Agricultural Fair, there’s truly something for everyone to enjoy. Elaine Carson began resettling refugees in 1988, volunteering for Lutheran Social Services to assist 30 Ukrainians. The World Relief Headquarters in Tampa, FL, heard of the work she was doing and asked her to resettle a family in Jacksonville. After helping resettle several families, they asked her to open an office here. In her 25th year as director of World Relief, Carson has resettled over 5,000 refugees fleeing countless horrors from all over the world.

THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON I’VE INTERVIEWED THIS MONTH He’s a prominent local attorney and former member of the Duval County School Board. But these days, W.C. Gentry is also known for his work in establishing the “Read it Forward Jax Coalition.” RIFJC is a nonprofit organization that promotes literacy among elementary school students in Jacksonville. And it’s work that is needed, because nearly half of Duval County students read below grade level and 80 percent of juveniles in detention are illiterate. As Gentry points out, the city’s serious issues with low child literacy rates, and high crime rates, are inextricably linked. He and others within the group are working to engage business, education, and faith leaders, among others, to financially and strategically support literacy efforts. Sandy Harrington Sandy Harrington is a native Floridian, and has painted for as long as she can remember. “I love to combine mediums and use gouache and acrylics a lot,” Harrington said. “My collage work is acrylic paint and altered and unaltered papers using gels. I continually discover new techniques for using color.” After working in the commercial art field for a number of years, Harrington made her living in the real estate field in the Daytona Beach area. Now that she is retiring to Jacksonville, she is enjoying painting like a kid again, experimenting with inks, dyes, and the use of color.
“Color is happy and vibrant and makes me feel that way too,” Harrington said. “I am interested in unique effects, colors that jump off the page, and vivid washy patterns.” She is also having fun exploring new ways to apply color to paper and canvas. Harrington works primarily in watercolors and inks, but she also values Dr. Martin’s radiant dyes, acrylic washes, and alcohol inks for their vivid colors. In 2015, Harrington was celebrated with an honorable mention for “Study in Red and Blue” at the Cultural Art Center in Ponte Vedra. BUZZ: How has being on tour with this musical been so far?
EL: Touring life has its’ ups and downs; you’re not in one place every week or every other week, but you do get to see and explore the world while working. It is a very exciting experience.
BUZZ: What is your favorite song to perform during the show and why? EL: “Dancing in The Street” is one, because mostly all of the cast is on the stage, and there’s lights, set,
and costume changes in front of you. It’s that whole magical broad way experience. I also love singing “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” by Stevie Wonder.
BUZZ: What was your musical and theatrical upbringing? EL: I come from a family of entertainment. Some family of mine wrote a musical called, “Momma I BUZZ: What is going to surprise people about this show? Want to Sing,” which became the longest running off-Broadway black musical in the history of American EL: I think people know a lot about Motown, but I don’t think they really truly know what went on theater. I starred in that for some time, and I was always in productions in school, and regional theater.

MOSH is in Full Bloom This Spring! April is packed full of programming for people of all ages! And it’s all leading up to the summer exhibit, Darwin & Dinosaurs opening Memorial Day Weekend. April 2 - Community First Celebrates 75 Years of MOSH with 75 Cent Admission Celebrate 75 years of MOSH with an ode to MOSH’s beginnings. Meet Emmet, born in the ‘40s just like MOSH; learn about science milestones over the last 75 years with special planetarium programs; watch swing dancers; and more! Don’t miss a special presentation by OCEARCH on the results of their latest trip – they’ve been tagging sharks of North Florida’s coast. April 13 – Little Learners: Plants & Seeds Little Learners will investigate flora in the Hixon Native Plant Courtyard, identify parts of a flower, and plant seeds. Doors open at 9:30 a.m. for Museum exploration, followed by Little Learners circle time and sing-along, programming and community learning activities through 11:30. Admission is only $5 per person (ages 3 and up). April 19 – Seniors on the Go Seniors will journey to the Bryan-Gooding Planetarium to learn all about Pluto. Why is it no longer a planet? April 30 – Opening of 130 Years of Service: The History of the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department MOSH is excited to celebrate the opening this exhibit, presented in partnership with the Jacksonville Fire Museum. The exhibit features an antique pump wagon, historical photos and other artifacts. Opening activities will include fire engine tours, information on fire safety and hands-on activities for children. Active and retired firefighters and rescue personnel – and their families – will receive discounted $5 admission. As a ravenous omnivore accustomed to eating my way around Jacksonville’s most spoonable spots, I have to say what an incredible delight—to my palate and my constitution—it was to find This Chick’s Kitchen. Tucked away in Jacksonville Beach, this tiny, intimate spot serves up some of the most incredible socially conscious food that I’ve seen in the area in a long while. Owner Craig and Chef/Owner Rosaria Anderson shared with me that if the ingredients for the dishes here aren’t found from a farmer, then that ingredient is purchased from a facility where their neighborhood kids get a paycheck. This very cool, good karma concept in my book ultimately translates to the plate with Chef Rosaria’s uber-creative and healthy fare. Yes, vegans, vegetarians, gluten-averters, and paleo peeps can all mindfully dine with happy taste buds at This Chick’s Kitchen. Each item changes everyday according to what is fresh on the farm, so dishes such as kale and tomato onion quiche, salmon patties over sweet potato salad, and veggie lasagna may not be available for each visit. But that only encourages me to pop in more, simply to see what cool, culinary creation has made its way to the menu that day. My fellow omnivores and healthy food fanatics alike, you don’t miss out on the munchies at This Chick’s Kitchen. There simply is not enough copy space to explain the great vibes, food, and ownership there. Yes, the whole experience is that forking awesome! VS: Well for one we are a catering company, but we have a small pop-up
supper club at Bold Bean in Jax Beach. It really is a unique dining experience. Every month, the menu is always different, and most of the time the guests don’t even know what is on the menu before the evening. I love that every day is always different for us.
BUZZ: What is your most memorable kitchen experience? VS: When I worked in Switzerland, it was a Michelin Star restaurant. I both suffered and grew in that kitchen, and it really set the stage for the kind of chef I would become. BUZZ: Favorite kitchen tool? VS: My blow torch and Quenelle spoon. BUZZ: Most unusual dish you have eaten? VS: I have eaten Zebra before. The End.
RECIPE BOX
Chipotle Spiced Churros & Creamed Honey DIRECTIONS In a small saucepan melt butter, water, salt, sugar until warm. Mix in the flour and stir on medium heat until a ball of dough is formed.
CHURROS 6 tablespoons butter 1 cup water 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1 cup all purpose flour
Transfer to a mixer with a paddle attachment. Mix on low adding the eggs one at a time. Keep mixing until cooled. Place mixture in a piping bag with a star piping tip. Pour oil into a pot until it’s about 2 inches deep, heat on medium high.
Once oil is hot, pipe about 5 inches of dough into the oil. Use scissors to cut Vegetable oil for frying the dough at the tip. Fry for about 1 cup of sugar & 2 teaspoons 1-2 min. Remove from oil using a chipotle powder mixed for coating slotted spoon and toss the churros in the sugar mixture. the churros 2 eggs

Musician, actress, and producer Rita Wilson is currently headlining a spring 2016 tour featuring new material from her second studio album self-titled, “Rita Wilson.” The album is a collection of original songs that she co-wrote. Wilson’s tour will cross more than 20 cities including Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago, and more. Wilson is best known for her multiple acting roles. She starred in the 1993 film, “Sleepless in Seattle” as well as the 1999 film, “It’s Complicated” and much more. She also has a recurring role on the CBS show, “The Good Wife” and the HBO Golden Globe winning series, “Girls.” Wilson was born and raised in Hollywood Hills, with dreams of becoming a singer in the ‘60s and ‘70s after falling in love with The Beatles and Janis Joplin. Her debut album in 2012 featured classics from those years. But before she achieved success, Wilson had a part-time job as a ticket-taker at the Universal Amphitheatre as a way to see the popular acts of the day like Linda Ronstadt, Joni Mitchell, Carole King, James Taylor, and The Eagles.

Rashean Mathis The longtime Jacksonville Jaguars player has retired from the NFL. The former Englewood High School star and Bethune-Cookman star played nine seasons for the Jags before wrapping up his career with the Detroit Lions. Mathis was an All-Pro selection in 2006.
Andrew Robustelli Robustelli is a former Jacksonville University Dolphins’ star that has recently signed to play for the Jacksonville Sharks. He was a first team all-league selection in 2014 and 2015. Robustelli’s grandfather is New York Giants Hall of Fame defensive end, Andy Robustelli.
Storm Davis The former big league pitcher is now the pitching coach for the Jacksonville Suns. Davis pitched in the Major Leagues from 1982-1994, and won two World Series titles. Davis spent a couple of seasons as the head baseball coach at the Bolles School here in Jacksonville.
Yolett McPhee-McCuin The Jacksonville University Dolphins’ women’s basketball coach made school history when she led her team to the Atlantic Sun Championship and to the NCAA Tournament.
