ONCE The Northeast Florida Premiere! May 1 at Thrasher-Horne Center

In 2012, “Once” was the recipient of eight Tony Awards, including Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical (John Tiffany), Best Book (Enda Walsh), and Best Orchestrations (Martin Lowe). This romantic, quirky show is based on the Irish movie of the same name, detailing the life-changing connection between a pair of musicians known only as Guy and Girl. He is a street singer/songwriter in Dublin who earns money as a vacuum repairman, and she is a Czech immigrant who sells flowers in order to support herself and her family. With music as the catalyst, Guy and Girl embark on a brief, powerful, and transformative journey. Tiffany, Walsh, and Lowe discussed the evolution and creation of “Once.” WHAT WAS YOUR REACTION WHEN YOU WERE INITIALLY APPROACHED ABOUT CREATING A MUSICAL BASED ON THE FILM ONCE?

truthful in that. People have said to me, ‘When I was sitting in the theater watching “Once,” I felt like was watching it with everyone I’ve ever loved, whether or not they’re still in my life.’

JT: When I was approached about “Once,” I hadn’t even seen the film. But one of my best friends said, ‘You will love the music.’ So I downloaded the soundtrack, and absolutely loved it. I’d never heard music like that, and the music is the reason why I wanted to do the show. Not just the music itself, but the fact that it’s a story about creating music, a story about the healing power of music.

THE MOVIE IS THE INSPIRATION FOR THE SHOW, YET YOU HAVE TO WALK A FINE LINE BETWEEN BEING TRUE TO THE FILM AND TRANSFORMING THE MATERIAL FOR THE STAGE. HOW DID YOU START?

EW: John called and said, ‘Let’s take two days, and we can read the screenplay, and listen to the songs, and talk about it.’ So I said, ‘Okay, we’ll do two days. And that’s all we’ll do.’ WHAT DID YOU LEARN DURING THOSE TWO DAYS? JT: Those two days convinced us that we wanted to do this show. We weren’t convinced before that. EW: Very quickly I thought I was a good match for the material. I tend to write characters that are inarticulate and lonesome, and something comes into their life that changes them. And from listening to the songs, I thought it might be good for me to do something about Ireland, which was so hurt in the recession. I thought it would be sweet to do a little love letter to Dublin. That was my way in. WHY DO YOU THINK “ONCE” HAS BEEN SO SUCCESSFUL AS BOTH A FILM AND AS A STAGE MUSICAL? JT: I think what’s very moving about the piece is how sometimes we meet people who we don’t necessarily stay with forever, but they give us the resources to move on to the next part of our life. There’s something very 10

April 2016 • iwantaBUZZ.com

JT: I knew from the beginning that the actors would be the musicians. At that point, I didn’t know the play was going to be set in a bar, but I knew before Enda began to write that we were going to move from one location to another in very simple terms. I told Enda, ‘Write this as if you’re writing a new play, and then let’s choose where the songs go in terms of telling the story.’ In some ways it was obvious, because we followed the structure of the film in terms of where the songs go. But we did make changes, although not radical in terms of the whole. EW: I think the big difference with this show is that we created a community. It’s like a spotlight is shone on these people in Dublin at a specific time, and around it grows romance and creativity. HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO CAST “ONCE?” JT: We need actors who can act brilliantly, move, and play instruments. In a way, casting the first production was the easiest, because we arranged the music around the instruments the actors could play. It was more difficult to cast London and the tour. We found amazing actors, but it took bloody ages. The good thing is Steven won’t compromise, I won’t compromise, and Martin won’t compromise, so if one of us vetoes an actor, then that’s it.

Wi$e Money Week When a former executive of the Federal Reserve approached Family Foundations about an idea for financial literacy five years ago, they never imagined this concept would result in the biggest public-private partnership on money management in the country. Wi$e Money Week brings together over 100 partners with existing financial literacy curricula and events to create as much engagement as possible in a single week. This year, with Mayor Lenny Curry serving as honorary chairman, the goal is to achieve over 30,000 hours of education during Wi$e Money Week April 24 through 30. 2016 will prove to be a banner year, with Kids Savings Kits going to 1,500 VPK students at Quality Rated Child Care Centers; No Dough Dinners at the USO’s at Mayport and NAS Jax; seven elementary schools using Junior Achievement in a Day; an essay contest for middle school students to receive college scholarships; Protecting Your Identity at Senior Citizen Centers; classes taught by the United Way’s Real Sense volunteers at Jacksonville Public Libraries, and more. There’s something for everyone! Family Foundations’ vision is for every person in Jacksonville to be wise about money. Participate in this year’s Wi$e Money Week by taking a class, volunteering to teach a class or attending one of the events. Learn more at WiseMoneyWeek.org.

Making a Difference: nonprofit leaders in our community

My daily words consist of, ‘Hi! Welcome. Yes, you are going to be okay. You’re going to make it. Let me introduce you to our friends. They will walk with you though this new journey,’” Carson said. “How hard can that be? This is my life, my day. Are we making a difference? I hope so, but I know for sure they (the refugees) are making a positive difference in me and in our community.”

ELAINE CARSON World Relief Jacksonville

Elaine Carson began resettling refugees in 1988, volunteering for Lutheran Social Services to assist 30 Ukrainians. The World Relief Headquarters in Tampa, FL, heard of the work she was doing and asked her to resettle a family in Jacksonville. After helping resettle several families, they asked her to open an office here. In her 25th year as director of World Relief, Carson has resettled over 5,000 refugees fleeing countless horrors from all over the world.

First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross

THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON I’VE INTERVIEWED THIS MONTH He’s a prominent local attorney and former member of the Duval County School Board. But these days, W.C. Gentry is also known for his work in establishing the “Read it Forward Jax Coalition.” RIFJC is a nonprofit organization that promotes literacy among elementary school students in Jacksonville. And it’s work that is needed, because nearly half of Duval County students read below grade level and 80 percent of juveniles in detention are illiterate. As Gentry points out, the city’s serious issues with low child literacy rates, and high crime rates, are inextricably linked. He and others within the group are working to engage business, education, and faith leaders, among others, to financially and strategically support literacy efforts. The Coalition also works in close collaboration with the Duval County Public Schools. Learn more at RIFJC.org And tune into First Coast Connect each weekday morning at 9 a.m. on WJCT 89.9 FM to hear from the most compelling newsmakers of the First Coast! 14

Get Outside with the Timucuan Parks Foundation Did you know that Jacksonville is home to the largest urban park system in the United States? Jacksonville is a large, beautiful city with endless possibilities for fun in the sun! We often take the breathtaking beauty of our Florida landscape for granted, but there are parks all over the city just waiting to be appreciated. The Timucuan Parks Foundation (TPF) is an organization dedicated to preserving, promoting, and protecting the hidden gems of Jacksonville’s natural history. Family time is important and with the constant onslaught of technology that we use just to communicate with one another, it’s nice to go somewhere as a family and unplug from the everyday get-up-and-go. Stop and watch a sunset with your eyes instead of your iPhone. Say ‘no’ to Facebook for an afternoon and go kayaking as a family. The Timucuan Parks Foundation aims to connect the people of Jacksonville to their parks. From camping to

kayaking; bird watching to bicycling; the Jacksonville parks system has it all! TPF brings awareness to the people of our city about the natural resources that surround us every day. They tell the story of Jacksonville’s history in the hopes of developing an appreciation for our rich culture among park visitors. TPF describes these parks as, “special places,” natural treasures that have been given to us to experience and enjoy together. Sharing the natural beauty of Jacksonville parks with the young people who will someday inherit them instills an appreciation and respect for the beauty of nature. See a new side of Jacksonville while making memories with your family that will last for generations. Go to our updated website, TimucuanTrailParksFoundation. org to learn more and plan your next visit to a Jacksonville park.

“We are so fortunate to live in an area where state, federal, and city government along with private partners have proactively set aside spectacular natural and cultural resources for the enjoyment of the people. We have miles of unspoiled coastlines, beaches, forts, plantations, urban parks, and one of the largest estuary preserves on the Atlantic Coast. Having been raised in Florida, I understand what these special places mean to people, and am humbled to be responsible for the stewardship of these resources so that they remain unchanged for future generations.”

Jody Hetchka of Kayak Amelia “Amelia Island is surrounded by state and national parks. These protected, ‘wild’ lands are perfect for wildlife viewing and just getting away from it all. We also realized that these fragile environments need to be protected from human encroachment. The best way to accomplish this is to get folks to spend time in the parks.” Kyriaki Karalis of REI “At REI, we believe that a life outdoors is a life well lived. We’ve been sharing our passion for the outdoors since 1938.”

Andy Fraden of All Wet Sports “The parks are for everyone to get out there and do it. Once you purchase the equipment, these watersports are inexpensive. And, it doesn’t hurt if you fall in the water; water is forgiving. In Jacksonville, you hit water in any direction in about 10 minutes.” Joe Crespi of Beach Marine “We love seeing more tourists who are discovering our park system, and that the city, state, and national parks work together to provide a seamless experience for locals and visitors alike.”

Their best-selling lures are the Tournament Series, available for purchase at Strike Zone Fishing, Browns Creek Fish Camp, and Palm Valley Outoors.

THE ARTS

Sandy Harrington Sandy Harrington is a native Floridian, and has painted for as long as she can remember. “I love to combine mediums and use gouache and acrylics a lot,” Harrington said. “My collage work is acrylic paint and altered and unaltered papers using gels. I continually discover new techniques for using color.” After working in the commercial art field for a number of years, Harrington made her living in the real estate field in the Daytona Beach area. Now that she is retiring to Jacksonville, she is enjoying painting like a kid again, experimenting with inks, dyes, and the use of color.

“Color is happy and vibrant and makes me feel that way too,” Harrington said. “I am interested in unique effects, colors that jump off the page, and vivid washy patterns.” She is also having fun exploring new ways to apply color to paper and canvas. Harrington works primarily in watercolors and inks, but she also values Dr. Martin’s radiant dyes, acrylic washes, and alcohol inks for their vivid colors. In 2015, Harrington was celebrated with an honorable mention for “Study in Red and Blue” at the Cultural Art Center in Ponte Vedra. She is the recipient of many other awards, and her work can be viewed at SandyHarrington.com.

ELJIAH AHMAD LEWIS

as Stevie Wonder in MOTOWN THE MUSICAL APRIL 19-24 AT THE TIMES UNION CENTER

BUZZ: How has being on tour with this musical been so far?

EL: Touring life has its’ ups and downs; you’re not in one place every week or every other week, but you do get to see and explore the world while working. It is a very exciting experience.

BUZZ: What is your favorite song to perform during the show and why? EL: “Dancing in The Street” is one, because mostly all of the cast is on the stage, and there’s lights, set,

and costume changes in front of you. It’s that whole magical broad way experience. I also love singing “Signed, Sealed, Delivered” by Stevie Wonder.

BUZZ: What was your musical and theatrical upbringing? EL: I come from a family of entertainment. Some family of mine wrote a musical called, “Momma I BUZZ: What is going to surprise people about this show? Want to Sing,” which became the longest running off-Broadway black musical in the history of American EL: I think people know a lot about Motown, but I don’t think they really truly know what went on theater. I starred in that for some time, and I was always in productions in school, and regional theater.

And also, the untold love story of Dianna Ross BUZZ: How did you find the inspiration to take on the role of a legend like and Berry Gordy. Stevie Wonder?

EL: Berry Gordy has this saying, “the truth is a hit,” and I totally believe in that 1,000 percent. We were BUZZ: How is “Motown The Musical” different from other projects you

Of course, we’re in the day and age where we have resources like YouTube too, where EL: Motown is the soundtrack to our lives. No matter what generation or decade you’ve grown there’s a lot of information. up in, Motown has been around. So, when you come to the show and you hear certain songs or phrases, I believe if you stay true to all the research you’ve done and everything Mr. Gordy’s given you; the audience it’ll take you back, you’ll remember where you were, who you were with. It’s something that will forever will receive your truth. So every night I do get a little nervous because it is Stevie Wonder, but I believe in live inside you. So just being able to sing this music every night and being able to live this story, it’s the artist that I am, and I believe in the work that I’ve done to pay homage to an incredible artist like him. an historic moment. As a ravenous omnivore accustomed to eating my way around Jacksonville’s most spoonable spots, I have to say what an incredible delight—to my palate and my constitution—it was to find This Chick’s Kitchen. Tucked away in Jacksonville Beach, this tiny, intimate spot serves up some of the most incredible socially conscious food that I’ve seen in the area in a long while. Owner Craig and Chef/Owner Rosaria Anderson shared with me that if the ingredients for the dishes here aren’t found from a farmer, then that ingredient is purchased from a facility where their neighborhood kids get a paycheck. This very cool, good karma concept in my book ultimately translates to the plate with Chef Rosaria’s uber-creative and healthy fare. Yes, vegans, vegetarians, gluten-averters, and paleo peeps can all mindfully dine with happy taste buds at This Chick’s Kitchen. Each item changes everyday according to what is fresh on the farm, so dishes such as kale and tomato onion quiche, salmon patties over sweet potato salad, and veggie lasagna may not be available for each visit. But that only encourages me to pop in more, simply to see what cool, culinary creation has made its way to the menu that day. My fellow omnivores and healthy food fanatics alike, you don’t miss out on the munchies at This Chick’s Kitchen. There simply is not enough copy space to explain the great vibes, food, and ownership there. Yes, the whole experience is that forking awesome! Kudos to the Andersons for opening up something completely different for Jacksonville’s diverse diners. Definitely a Two Thumbs Up experience!

“We make a strong conscious effort to serve our community good whole food cooked with a lot of love.” - Owner and Chef Rosaria

BUZZworthy Note: This Chick’s Kitchen offers catering as well as a delivery service. So, easy access to deliciously healthy dishes are simply a phone call away. Also, make note that there is a backroom in the restaurant that can be rented out for eating events or other fork-based festivities. April 2016 • iwantaBUZZ.com

YOUR LEGAL

CORNER ASK THE ATTORNEY APRIL HOROSCOPE

Written by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

Aries (March 21- April 19) Your birthday is very near. Thus, expect a more dynamic social life now. It’s a new game for relationships, so freshen up your appearance. If you can’t freshen up yours, take your less attractive friends out with you. That should help some. Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Something is brewing with a friend this month. You will find yourself bonding with said friend in a more than casual way. A friendship may be burnt if you’re the only one falling in love, but I am sure you have plenty of friends to take a test run on. Gemini (May 21 – June 21) Romance is strong for you right now. Even if the object of your affection isn’t available, you can’t past this up. Find someone else for the time being and try explaining it later. Carpe diem! Cancer (June 22 – July 22) Try getting your surroundings in order, and surprisingly, this will lead to an upgrade in your personal life. Speaking of, let’s try letting go of that lazy anchor called your mate, who’s been holding you back. Toss him/her overboard already. Leo (July 23 – August 22) No one likes a nag, especially you Leo. So why don’t you save us some headaches and quit being one yourself. So things aren’t falling your way as they usually do. Deal with it. The rest of us manage every month without launching into a complaint machine. Virgo (August 23 – September 22) I notice you are still looking for that perfect situation before you jump into it. Well, if you have not caught on, they don’t exist and you won’t be jumping anytime soon. Go ahead; keep waiting while life passes you by. Great plan.

Libra (September 23 – October 22) Some fun nights are on the horizon for you Libra. The type that could be mind-blowing fun. That’s great for you, but horrendous for the rest of us. This is all you will talk and talk and talk about for the next month. Can’t wait to hear about these same stories forever. Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) Scorpio, love is heating up rather quickly for you. So fast, you may not know what’s going on, or where your next move is going. But don’t worry, it will be over soon. Seeing you won’t be able to control it, you will ruin this fun in no time. Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) Seems the person you’re with, or working on, isn’t quite getting the picture. Maybe they’re just plain dumb. I’m sure that’s what it is. So quit any games and tell them straight up how you feel. If they still don’t get it, buy them a lollipop, pat them on the head, and forget about them. Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) Looks like you are up to no good this month. Playful is always a fun time. Go crazy and see what romance you can strike up. But don’t wait around; next month isn’t looking to be as good as this one. Mischievous and on the prowl; get to it.
