FIRST COAST CONNECT with MELISSA ROSS Norman spoke in Jacksonville on March 29th at FSCJ South’s Wilson Center as part of the VyStar International Artist Lecture Series. Despite his iconic status as a trailblazing animator, Norman says that was never on his mind when he started his career.
“I had no social agenda when I came to Disney in my youth,” he said. “We were just a bunch of kids looking for a job. It was an incredible time to be at the studio.” Norman was named a Disney Legend in 2007. In 2008, he appeared as Guest of Honor at Comic-Con International, where he was given an Inkpot Award.
THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON I’VE INTERVIEWED THIS MONTH If you’ve seen classic films like “Sleeping Beauty,” “The Jungle Book” or the “Toy Story” movies, you’ve seen the work of legendary animator Floyd Norman. The 81-year-old Norman became the first African-American animator for the Walt Disney Studios back in 1959. In the decades since, he has helped many bring Disney and Pixar classics to life. Norman’s talents have touched The Jungle Book, Robin Hood, Mulan, the Toy Story movies, Monsters, Inc., just to name a few. He’s also worked on animated television productions like “Fat Albert,” “Cosby Kids,” and “The Smurfs.” 4

He’s also an author and the subject of a documentary film, Floyd Norman: An Animated Life. Norman is a man of unique talents who’s succeeded in a difficult industry and achieved iconic status, yet remains humble.

From working in transportation logistics to running a world-wide inflatable standup paddle board company, iROCKER owners Stephen Elder and Dave Erwin have skyrocketed their company into an iSUP sensation. How did iROCKER begin?

Trout Creek Park is a 16.5 acre passive park open free of charge to all visitors. The site features a double boat ramp with handy access to Trout Creek and the St. Johns River and an accessible boardwalk borders the canal and ramps. A half-mile nature trail meanders along the inside perimeter of the park. This park is great for the paddle boarder that wants to see the sights by foot and on the water.

Reddie Point Preserve is located at the bend of the St. Johns River and provides spectacular views of the St. Johns River and downtown Jacksonville. This park also offers a large fishing pier and docking station for boats, this park is great for the

LGBTQ young people are affirmed in their identities, confident in their futures, and are a valued asset in the Northeast Florida community. While programs and services are designed for those who identify as LGBT or Questioning, all youth are welcome at JASMYN! Affiliates of Wealth Watchers, Inc. have worked tirelessly for years to promote financial literacy and growth throughout Jacksonville. The organization was founded back in December 2001 by a group of bankers. Carrie Davis serves as president and CEO. She has obtained a degree in business management and has over 20 years of experience in community development, including construction. Davis believes it is pertinent for everyone to have basic knowledge of wealth and finance. She sees financial literacy as a path to leading fulfilling lives. “We know that everybody, regardless of income status, needs to understand the basics of financial literacy. Everyone needs to build wealth and understand how to accumulate assets,” Davis said. Wealth Watchers offers financial boot camp and other programs surrounding topics of budgeting, saving and investing; all while building properties for low to moderate income families to rent. Funding is also available to those who would like to purchase their own homes. Davis sees homeownership as a huge step in the right direction. “We know at Wealth Watchers, especially in low to moderate income communities, the way to build assets is through homeownership. We want to make sure that homeownership is done right,” Davis said. One of the things we talk about in terms of building health and finance is saving. Davis feels it is rewarding to be in a position where she can do her part to help the city flourish with the assistance of Wealth Watchers. She believes the organization has been a pillar in surrounding communities; on a mission to gentrify and enhance. “During the foreclosure crisis, Jacksonville was impacted significantly. There were a lot of vacant homes and vacant lots that were not being kept up,” Davis said. “Not only did we clean them up, we put back quality, affordable rentals.” Wealth Watchers continue to build and support with plans to have its services offered be ever-growing. “I want to ensure we have a strategic direction as an organization. The Guardian ad Litem Foundation of Florida’s First Coast, Inc. is returning with its famed Oz-themed fundraising event, There’s No Place Like Home, presented by Coker Law. The event will be held in a place as unique as Oz itself – the spectacular Duval County courthouse – on April 13, 2018, from 5:30-9:30 p.m. Proceeds from the event will go to support advocacy for abused and neglected children in the dependency court system of the 4th Circuit Guardian ad Litem Program, which serves Clay, Nassau and Duval counties. The Duval County courthouse does not typically open its doors to a charity for an evening fundraising event. However, because the impact of the voice that the volunteer Guardians ad Litem give to the children in the dependency court system and subsequent support the courthouse judges and administration give to Guardian ad Litem, the courthouse is home once again to this signature event. Julia Taylor will be the Honorary Chair for There’s No Place Like Home 2018. The Duval County Courthouse’s third floor atrium will be transformed into an Emerald City, highlighted by behind-the-scenes guided tours led by circuit court judges. Courthouse tours begin at 6:15 p.m. Due to security restrictions, courthouse entry will end at 7:30 p.m. The event will also include hors d’oeuvres, a live and silent auction, a champagne drawing and the swinging sounds of The Chris Thomas Band. Tickets for There’s No Place Like Home 2018 are $100 per person, or $75 for young professionals under the age of 35. Jacquelyn Pfaff-Pratt Jacquelyn Pfaff-Pratt has had a life long interest in the arts. As early as the sixth grade she made up her mind to grow up and be an artist. That is what she did. Jackie recently made Florida her new home, coming originally from New York then Easton, Md. She is very excited about being here in the land of almost never-ending summer. This one person show that will be at the Art Center at the Landing is about another interest of hers: gardening and flowers. She often asks herself if she was an artist first and a gardener second or vice-versa. However, she believes it was an artist. This is a subject that she often turns to for inspiration. The show will have colored pencil drawings, pastels and oil paint as these are the media of choice for her. Please stop by the Art Center at the Landing to view her artwork.
Cookie Davis Cookie Davis is a native of Jacksonville and has been involved in the art community since the early 1970s as both an exhibiting artist and a volunteer chairperson, board member and founder of a number of cultural organizations and events. Ms. Davis was recognized for her work in 2014 by the Jacksonville Cultural Council as Arts Advocate, receiving the first “Robert Arleigh White Award for Art Advocacy.” Cookie Davis’ work is in private and corporate collections, both nationally and internationally.

Douglas Anderson School of the Arts Theatre Department presents their fourth show of the school year, Picnic. bread, for dipping, I voted this my new favorite dish. Moving to the entrée portion my companion ordered the Buttermilk Fried Chicken served with Yukon Gold mashed, alongside sizeable grilled Okra pods and Baby Carrots. The chicken was steaming, with a crispy outer layer and when cut open the aroma of the chicken meat triggered the Pavlov response in my mouth. The potatoes, creamy and buttery, were faultless, and the grilled vegetables picture perfect on every level. My choice was the nightly meat special, a filet served Oscar Style, accompanied by grilled halved asparagus spears and zucchini slices. Now if you’re big into presentation this would have been the dish to order, stunning, almost too perfect to eat, I just wanted to take the pictures. The filet cooked medium rare as requested then topped with a substantial portion of lightly browned Blue Crab Cake. Once I began eating, the experience was heavenly, meat flavorful and cooked per my request. The Crab Cake so tasty and sweet, could have been an entrée, the grilled veggies cooked a perfect al’ dente. There was no room for any sweets, but to me, that is cause for a return visit. I can only say make this a not to be missed experience. From the beautifully appointed dining room to the rooftop bar that hands down offers the best views of Jacksonville, this is the place to be. We met up on Wednesday night for dinner around 5 pm; people were already drifting in for early cocktails or dinner, and within the hour the dining room was full; that is how popular River and Post has become in just a few short months. After much “oohing” and “ahhing” over the menu we made what turned out to be one spectacular dinner. Starting with two of what we felt were the best offerings for us were the Steak Tartare and a dish that is on the lunch menu, the Sherry-Glazed Chorizo with sweet Cipollini Onions alongside sliced and grilled crusty bread. It is nice to see Steak Tartare fit into current restaurant trends, I love the saltiness of the raw meat. This particular dish provided me with all the elements I look for: cold, salty, fatty and rawness that a true carnivore loves. The presentation was top notch as well. Now, the Glazed Chorizo, well that was something else. Not usually a fan of Chorizo, but this particular dish was so unlike any Chorizo I have ever sampled. The textures and flavors coming from the meat and that sweet Cipollini caused me to sit and think about it. With the addition of large slabs of well-grilled

At the Stuffed Beaver, on the corner of Oak and Barrs Street, you will find 15 seats with some Canadian decor specializing in French Canadian comfort food. One must try the many variations of poutine along with a Castor “Beaver” tail. At the Stuffed Beaver, Canadian hospitality is everywhere eh! Broiled Gulf Coast Oysters
Gilbert’s Hot Chicken + Shrimp + Fish Well, I made it back to the beach to get the full effect of the new Gilbert’s Hot Chicken + Shrimp + Fish, and I as expected, came away a happier person. I don’t know if it was the food, the drink, the atmosphere or a combination of all elements but I will undoubtedly be spending more time at the beach this year. Let’s talk about the food. Depending on which dining room you choose, the first floor is a smaller more casual room and the top floor is still casual but with marvelous views of the ocean and a more extensive seating area: the menus are interchangeable. I opted for the upper level, merely to enjoy the beauty of the day. For this outing I chose items from the casual menu, starting with the KG’S BLT. Stacked full with Smoked and Fried Chicken Boneless Chicken Thigh, Jalapeno Cheddar Drop Biscuits, Picked Green Tomato, Remoulade, Pork Belly and Butter Lettuce. Two nicely sized offerings, perfect for sharing or as a meal for one. I found the chicken moist and smoky which is a preference for me. The biscuits were generously stuffed Jalapeno pieces, adding a nice bit of heat, and if you know about or have eaten at any of the other “Gilbert’s,” then you are already aware of how spectacular the Pork Belly is and this visit was not any different.

I spotted the word Foie Gras on the menu and immediately ordered the Broiled Gulf Coast Oysters, slathered with generous amounts of the Foie Gras Butter, Pomegranate Molasses, Andouille Sausage, Gilbert’s Greens, finished off with Corn Bread Gratin. Warm and salty oysters are a perfect bite, a dish I would order again. I wasn’t going to, but my server was very persuasive in steering me to the Southern Curry. Usually, I would not touch Collards, but when Chef Gilbert turns them into a velvety well-spiced broth who am I to resist. I opted for the chicken with this dish and it was the right choice. The texture and sweetness of the coconut rice tempered the heat from the curry and the chilies. This dish with its simple ingredients provided me with many textures and flavors to ponder. Again, this is a dish I would like to remain on the menu. Overall my visit was well worth the travel time, and I do see myself spending more time at the beach this year to satisfy my food needs.

The Jags made a splash in free agency by getting the best guard available in Andrew Norwell. The former Ohio State Buckeyes standout was an undrafted free agent out of college and signed with the Carolina Panthers. He played in a Super Bowl with the Panthers and in 2017 was an All-Pro. He signed a monster deal with the Jags including $30 million guaranteed.
The Jaguars see some upside in the former Indianapolis Colts wide receiver and the payoff for the Jags offense would be huge if they are right. Donte Moncrief has 18 touchdown catches in his career but seemed to struggle with the absence of Andrew Luck in Indy. Moncrief gets a fresh start and will take over for Allen Robinson as the Jags physical presence at the receiver position.

This is a move that excites Jags fans. Tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins is only 25 years old and caught 50 passes last season with the Jets. Seferian-Jenkins has overcome admitted alcohol issues in the last few years. He’s been sober for more than a year and could just be finding his stride as an NFL player.

The band’s self-titled debut EP was released in late 2005, finding an international audience through Myspace and music forums, and quickly becoming an underground sensation. THE DESCENDENTS STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:
The DESCENDENTS invented pop punk. Overstatement? Perhaps, but spend ten minutes scanning FM or the idiot box and you’re bound to witness a ditty or video that tips its hat to a musical genre that was refined to a high art — if not created outright — by the ‘Dents. Formed in 1978 against the fertile musical backdrop of Los Angeles’ South Bay scene (see: Black Flag, Minutemen, SST Records, etc.), the caffeine-addled crew released their first 7″ single “Ride The Wild” as a trio in 1979. Not long after, the boys recruited one Milo Aukerman (microbiology Ph.D. in waiting and poster boy for adolescent ne’er-do-well alienation) for vocal duties. With the introduction of new members Karl Alvarez and Stephen Egerton on bass and guitar respectively, the release of 1987’s “ALL” full-length saw a band that had truly come into its own. While the tongue in cheek delivery remained intact, the music had become at once visceral and from the gut, a complex balance of straightforward delivery (“Clean Sheets”, “Coolidge”) and fringe-y, free jam inflections (“Schizophrenia”, “Uranus”). The band toured incessantly throughout the mid and late ’80s; all that time on the road paid off in spades in the form of two live albums, “Liveage!” and “Hallraker.” And then Milo went back to college. The extant members went on to form the band ALL with ex-Dag Nasty vocalist Dave Smalley, continuing their prodigious musical output while maintaining a hectic tour schedule. It was not until 1996 that we’d see another DESCENDENTS release with “Everything Sucks,” a perfect return to the pop punk form that the band had become known for. Fast forward to 2003, and lo and behold, the DESCENDENTS are back in the saddle with two new efforts slated for the release in 2004: a four song EP entitled “‘Merican,” and a bona fide full-length LP’s worth of new material that goes by the name “Cool To Be You.” Seeing as how punk is now a household name, and the ubiquitous “girl song” milieu infests the airwaves, will the DESCENDENTS reclaim their title as Kings of the Lovelorn Anthem? Only time will tell, but this much is certain: If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, the DESCENDENTS must go to sleep with flushed cheeks every night of the week.

Lots of news around the Jax craft beer community, and this month we’re taking a look at what’s happened and what’s ahead. Days are longer now, and there’s more time to sip some suds after work and on the weekends! One way to take advantage of that is to visit the renovated beer garden at Wicked Barley Brewing on Baymeadows Road at Goodby’s Creek! Smoothed out and with an all-new synthetic grass surface installed by Southwest Greens, the beer garden is now easier than ever to move around and take in the sunshine or a sunset at the picnic tables under the umbrellas. And, don’t forget that walk to the dock along the creek! Brewery-in-planning Legacy Ale Works has announced its location, after months of searching for the perfect site. Owners Matt and Liz Jacobs have signed a lease on 3300 sf of space in the city’s Bartram Park neighborhood, at 14965 Old St. Augustine Rd., at the intersection of US 1 in the Shoppes of Durbin Creek plaza. Plans for the neighborhood brewery and tap room include a 1000sf brewery operating from a 3.5 barrel brewhouse, and a 2300sf tap room. Matt has

conducted several tastings around the area and has appeared at several beerfests to introduce the public to Legacy Ale Works. A Q&A interview with Matt and Liz appears on this site. The brewery now begins the permitting stage. Congratulations to local Jacksonville area breweries for taking home medals in the annual Best Florida Beer Championships in Tampa in March! With around 815 entries in 38 medal categories, the judges narrowed it down to the top three in each category and also awarded Best of Show winners. It was a happy afternoon for several local breweries which brought the hardware back to the Jax area: • Main & Six Brewing, Gold: Handsworth Brown Ale • Wicked Barley Brewing, Gold: The Passionate Mango (Small Batch) and Best of Show Runner-up Small Batch; Silver: Brazilian Mead • Amelia Island Brewing Company/Amelia Tavern: Gold: Sm’kn M’rtha • Veterans United Craft Brewery: Gold, Scout Dog 44; Silver: Raging Blonde; Silver: Farmers Little Helper

Another new brewery in the works is Strings Sports Brewery, coming to Main Street in the Springfield area. The brewery announced on March 14 that its loan has been approved, and construction will be underway soon. Strings Sports Brewery introduced several of its beers at the PorchFest event last fall. What we’re watching: More new breweries continue to enter the Jax metro area, with three expected to open soon. We’re watching Reve Brewing, in the Mayport area, the second brewery for Green Room Brewing owner Eric Luman (see prior article on this site); Ruby Beach Brewing, the rebranded brewery of the former Zeta in Jax Beach; and Blind Rabbit Brewing, an addition to the Blind Rabbit Burger & Whiskey Bar in Jax Beach. What do you love most about Jacksonville’s Beach nightlife? I love that all ages that come out. Beginner drinkers to more experienced cocktail aficionados.
Do you serve any local liquors or brews? Yes. Atlantic Beach Brewing Company, Intuition, and Bold City
Do you all have music or any events? Friday and Saturday nights, 6 pm to 9 pm we have acoustic sounds, Blues, and Bluegrass vibes. 9 pm to Midnight plus we have different bands that rotate playing Blues, Southern Rock, Motown, and Bluegrass.
What is unique about your bar area? We feature Moonshine & Bourbon/Whiskey Cocktails in Gilbert’s Southern Kitchen and Bar, Gilbert’s Hot Chicken, Fish and Shrimp, Seachaser’s Lounge and, the soon to be open, Gilbert’s Beach BBQ. There are four unique bar/ restaurant spaces within the building. You can spend an evening with us and experience it all.

What do you want more people to know about your business? I am passionate about bringing authentic Regional Southern Cuisine and Libations to Jacksonville Beach. My family is from St Augustine, and I am very proud that I can bring some of my Heritage to the area.
