He’s a Jacksonville resident and a noted author. And this summer, Charlie Cobb is making the national media rounds. That’s because his look back at 1964 and the civil rights movement of that era has a somewhat different take than the narrative most of us have heard about.

First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross

Cobb’s new book coincides with the 50th anniversary of the 1964 Freedom Summeras civil rights demonstrators across the South and here in our area pushed hard for equality.

It’s called “THIS NONVIOLENT STUFF’LL GET YOU KILLED: How Guns Made the Civil Rights Movement Possible.” In this book, Cobb overturns the misconception that the nonviolent civil rights movement of the first half of the 20th century was actually “nonviolent.” Instead, as Cobb shows, a good deal of those apparently “peaceful” activists very readily embraced their constitutional right to self-protect, and in doing so he reveals one of the central paradoxes of the movement: that nonviolence only succeeded because it was underpinned by the threat of lethal force. Cobb has the perfect background to make this argument. He’s an award-winning civil rights scholar who served as a field secretary for the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, from 1962 and 1967, primarily in rural Mississippi. A veteran journalist, Cobb is also an inductee of the National Association of Black Journalists Hall of Fame, and his reporting has won multiple awards.

“People think it was just as simple as ‘Rosa sat down and Martin stood up,’” said Cobb. “The reality was more complicated- and interesting!” The First Coast is full of fascinating people like Charlie Cobb. It’s my privilege to get to meet and interview them, and I encourage you to tune in to First Coast Connect every weekday morning at 9 a.m. on 89.9 WJCT to hear the most compelling newsmakers of the First Coast!

LEADERSHIP JAX

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

An interview with a leader in the Jacksonville Community

MR. MICHAEL BOYLAN

“A Leader Forging Partnerships and Development” President & CEO, WJCT, Inc. Buzz: You have been President & CEO of WJCT for over 15 years, how did you come to WJCT? Tell us about your journey…. Michael Boylan: I guess you would say I have always been very industrious even as a young boy, but it was in my sophomore year of High School that I really started to embrace my entrepreneurial spirit. How did this exciting journey start you ask? ”Steak on a Stick”, bet you didn’t expect that answer! My uncle was a HS football coach and during the summers I worked with him on his concession truck selling “steak on a stick”! I grew up in Ohio and we would travel the Midwest on the carnival circuit, attending state fairs and local carnivals. Eventually I bought my own truck and travelled the circuit selling Italian Sausage Sandwich’s. This is how I paid for my education. I am a graduate of John Carroll University and received my Master’s degree in Telecommunications from Kent State University. I kind of fell into my career in television. I have been very fortunate…..After teaching at Kent State for a year, I had the opportunity to join the production crew for then popular televangelist Rex Humbard. What an amazing time and learning experience! We literally travelled the globe and I was able to learn everything from operating a camera to eventually being head of production. After four years of travelling, my wife and I were ready to start a family, we decided it was time to put down some roots. After years of cold Ohio winters, I told my wife, “I don’t know what I am going to do, but whatever it is – I am going to do it in Florida!” In 1980 I took a job with PBS as Producer/Director in Miami the rest you can say is history…. I am proud to be a part of the Jacksonville community and I feel privileged to oversee the day to day operation and implementation of long range plans and goals for WJCT. Buzz: This year you were recognized at the Legacy of Leaders dinner and in the Portrait of Leadership Gallery. What does being a “leader” mean to you? Michael Boylan: I am so honored to be recognized as a leader, the initiative of promoting positive leadership is such an important one. I believe a leader should be observant in all areas, celebrate those around you that are successful, and for those that need direction - empower them - give them the tools to succeed! I love the quote “Let your Sandbox be your Soapbox” – use the tools that you have to help effect change..... Buzz: What advice would you leave future leaders? Michael Boylan: Have a personal plan for your career and personal life and focus on your attaining your goals. Remember nothing is etched in stone, review your goals and be open to change! Be cognizant that you are a mentor – mentorship and bettering your community should not be an option but a priority.... Be consistent - “Walk the Walk” that you say that you do.

THE ARTS

Be On The Look Out For Elliot Roffman “Ebox Glass”

“I

have always had an interest in glass. My parents were collectors of crystal and soft glass sculptures. My career in glass started when I met Lance Sanford, Micha Evans, Brian Knaus, and Josh Bergenson in Jacksonville Beach. They had created a company called Lucid Visions Glass Art. They gave me the opportunity to watch and purchase glass from them. Later, Sasha Hess and his wife introduced me to the art in more depth, giving me hands on tutorials about various glassblowing techniques. I was in school full time at UNF when I first started to blow glass part time. I knew that I wanted to be a glassblower for a living at that point, but I decided to complete my degree first. After I graduated from UNF I started working with a friend named Joel Halen, who helped me establish myself as a full time Glassblower. The American Glass Expo in Las Vegas, Champs in Denver, and The Degenerate Flame Off in Eugene Oregon are the first trade shows that I have attended, but they all introduced me to the beautiful community I am now apart of. My goals now are to work with as many artists as possible and keep innovating functional and wearable glass art.”- Elliot Roffman Contact Elliot at EBoxGlassArt@gmail.com.

I learned all my English here. It’s not always easy being in a different country, especially by myself, but so far it has been an amazing journey. As a person, I tend to take everything I do to the extreme. I am a very intense person. I teach zumba and capoeira professionally. As for my photography, I have a passion for creating striking images... You can create a whole world with a good picture. Feeling at ease, you let go of your babies knowing they will be safe in the bindings of this perfect story. The murals at Legacy Academy are not only a dream come true for parents and little ones all over Florida, but for those who paint them as well. With each mural costing a quarter of a million dollars, an artist can follow their passion and make a solid living as well. Each mural at the 50 locations will need a team of painters to complete, making this the perfect opportunity for any artist looking for work. The Mural Art of Legacy Academy LegacyJax.org By Todd Rykaczewski

It’s the beginning of the academic year and it’s time to drop off the little ones for their first day of school. Hesitant and probably more frightened than your kid, you walk to the minivan. Lunch boxes, safety seats and anticipation are all loaded up and buckled in. The drive over to the Legacy Academy is a quiet one, with the exception of some whining and the vibrating of your cell phone. After a few minutes your morning voyage safely ends at the front of a grand, yellow and white building. A fountain eloquently tucked in the courtyard provides a calming sound through its trickling water and charming design. With your kids hands tightly griped in yours, the three of you make your way up the stairs and to the front door. Bending down and kissing each little face and trying not to cry, you open the door and walk in. Instantly, it’s clear that you’re no longer standing in a building but in the pages of a magical fairytale. Your kids have loosened their grip from yours and the feeling of being nervous fades. Magic and wonder overcome any

Theater in the River City By Tamara McClaran, Northeast Florida Theater Enthusiast “Motherhood Out Loud” at Limelight Theatre Limelight Theatre’s “Motherhood Out Loud” should strike a chord – not only with mothers, but with all parents of children as well as children of parents. The contemporary comedy, which features a collection of monologues by more than a dozen writers, highlights the journey known as parenting and the relationships that connect children and parents. “This show is not ‘Ozzie and Harriet,’” said director Margaret Kaler. “’Motherhood Out Loud’ offers a funny, comprehensive and modern view of motherhood as it is today.” The monologues range from hilarious to heart wrenching, covering a wide range of topics including sleep deprivation, separation anxiety and caregiving. “’The show is a series of small plays that have been put together to make a larger play,” Kaler said. “The monologues fit together nicely.” While the show is funny and touching, its

Who is Todd Roobin? TODD ROOBIN Manager for City of Jacksonville Film & Television Office Interview by Todd Rykaczewski

BUZZ: WHAT ARE YOUR MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES

AS MANAGER FOR THE CITY OF JACKSONVILLE FILM & TELEVISION OFFICE? TR: As Manager for the City of Jacksonville Film & Television Office, my key responsibility is to help cultivate Jacksonville’s economy through job creation and retention by actively marketing and attracting film, television and digital media business to the area. I also assist local and visiting productions with obtaining permits, provide preliminary location scouting, and engage the local workforce and area businesses. I serve as the liaison between the city, the production company, the production industry and our community.

BUZZ: HOW IS THE FILM/TELEVISION INDUSTRY

SIGNIFICANT TO JACKSONVILLE’S CULTURE AND ECONOMY? TR: The film & television industry is significant to Jacksonville’s economy because productions hire a local, professional workforce, pay high wages and purchase goods and services from Jacksonville-based businesses. Television and film productions have proven to have a significant impact on the local hospitality industry. For instance, the HBO movie “RECOUNT,” starring Kevin Spacey and Laura Dern, had more than a $3.2 million direct economic impact and garnered 5,200 room nights. Crew and production executives who stayed at our hotels for up to two months patronized local restaurants and retail stores. Representatives from the national and international print and broadcast media traveled to the area to report on the production and the actors in it. Jacksonville’s Film significance dates back to the early 1900’s when the city was marketed as the “Winter Film Capital of the World.” Several studios of the era based their winter operations in Springfield, Arlington and Downtown, where they produced silent films.

BUZZ: WHAT ARE SOME WAYS YOU ARE CURRENTLY ENCOURAGING FILM/TELEVISION PRODUCERS TO CHOOSE JACKSONVILLE OVER OTHER CITIES? TR: We encourage producers to shoot in Jacksonville by connecting them with producers and production executives who have filmed in Jacksonville to share their stories.

We also provide cost saving comparisons. Jacksonville is a unique and diverse city, with an inviting climate and representing cultures from many different parts of the world. In the past, Jacksonville has doubled for the Amazon, Panama, South Florida, Upstate New York, Chicago, New England, New York City and South Carolina. Because he knows that films create economic impact, Mayor Brown is very supportive and will meet personally with prospective producers. And, the City of Jacksonville works hard to streamline the permitting process.

BUZZ: WILL JACKSONVILLE INVEST MONEY/RESOURCES ON PROJECTS FILMED IN JACKSONVILLE? TR: The Duval County Tourist Development Council has approved grants of up to $50,000 on past motion pictures and television movies that resulted in significant

local hotel room nights. The City assists productions in utilizing the State of Florida Film Incentive program, and provides the related applications and contacts. I am also currently actively lobbying to improve the state film incentive program so Jacksonville can garner more projects.

BUZZ: WHAT ARE SOME OF THE WELL-KNOWN LOCATIONS IN JACKSONVILLE THAT MADE IT INTO FILM/TELEVISION? TR: “Pointman” and “Brenda Starr” were both shot in Hanna Park. Huguenot Memorial Park was used for the filming of “G.I. Jane” and “The Manchurian Candidate.” City

Council Chambers, the Ed Ball Building and Jacksonville Beach City Hall were used in “RECOUNT,” and filming was also done at Cecil Commerce Center for “BASIC.”

BUZZ: WHAT’S BEEN THE LARGEST PROJECT YOU’VE TAKE ON SO FAR? TR: One of the biggest projects that filmed in Jacksonville was “BASIC,” starring John Travolta, Samuel L. Jackson, Connie Nielsen, Taye Diggs, Giovanni Ribisi, Tim Daly and

Harry Connick, Jr.

BUZZ: DO YOU CURRENTLY HAVE ANY MAJOR PROJECTS GOING ON? TR: The Film Office is currently working on several small-and medium-budget projects that will have a positive economic impact in Jacksonville. BUZZ: WHAT CAN READERS OF BUZZ MAGAZINE EXPECT TO SEE IN YOUR NEW BUZZ BLOG AND COLUMN? TR: The goal of our BUZZ Magazine blog is to provide readers with a better understanding of the Film Office functions, Jacksonville’s incredible film history, our

competitive film incentive program, the wonderful crew living right here in our area and more about the production business as a whole. Jacksonville has a unique perspective and we love sharing our stories.

BUZZ: HOW LONG HAVE YOU WORKED IN TELEVISION/FILM? TR: I’ve worked in the television & film industry for 30 years. BUZZ: WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST MOVIE WATCHING EXPERIENCE? TR: Probably “The Wizard of Oz” on television. I do recall going to the theater and seeing “The Planet of the Apes” in 1968, starring Charlton Heston and Roddy McDowall. Check out Todd Roobin’s column on page 44

Beating the Backto-School Blues… WJCT Knows A lot About That!

By Robin R. Warren, WJCT Education Outreach Coordinator

As we move toward the beginning of a new school year, I can only hope that heading back to school—after a summer of sun and fun—will be so effortless. However, for many children, the start of the new school year means the end of fun and free time. If most kids had it their way, summer would last forever. But we already know that’s never going to happen, so instead, help them see that there’s a way to return to school buses, backpacks and books with a genuine smile on their faces. Here are some helpful tips from WJCT for beating the back-to-school blues. Get reacquainted with old friends. With summer camps and family vacations, sometimes your kids don’t see their school friends until that first day back. Reconnect with buddies a week or so beforehand to get reacquainted. Play dates or, for older children, an easy endof-summer BBQ in the backyard are great ways to do this. Suggest that your child call up a friend and coordinate a pre-school meet up. Maybe they can arrange to walk into school at the same time on the first day. A phone call to a friend three or four days ahead can help calm your child’s concerns about going back to school. Get Your Kids Psyched Two weeks before school begins, print up small posters with numbers counting down the days, and have your kids help decorate them. On certain days plan events — 14 days to go is school shopping day, 12 days to go is a special craft project, 10 days to go is an outing to the amusement park, eight days to go is a visit to the library to get a book for the

WJCT2 Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood-Margaret Just in time for the first day of school, the neighborhood of Make-believe welcomes Daniel Tiger’s little sister Margaret with a one-hour special event airing on August 18, followed by a week of all new episodes. Watch on WJCT-TV 7.1 (Comcast 8 & 440) at 11 & 11:30am.

school year, and so on. With all the fun anticipation, the kids get increasingly excited for the big day to finally arrive. The week leading up to the first day, help kids get in the mood by reading books about going back to school. My favorite is “First Day Jitters,” by Julie Danneberg, which follows a girl as she’s getting ready, but you can’t see her face. She’s really anxious, wondering what it will be like and if people will like her, and at the end we learn the girl is actually a teacher! It just goes to show that everyone gets a bit nervous about the first day of school. Make the First Day Memorable Get up early and make a real home-cooked breakfast, or

pack a special lunch with some little surprise for the kids to find at lunch. Start a school scrapbook project. For each year on the first day of school, snap photos of your child(ren), add other info such as their height, weight, and shoe size. It’s fun to look back and observe how they’ve grown and changed over the years. Switching from a summer to a school schedule can be stressful to everyone in the household. Use these tips to help your little ones and you avoid first-day-of-school mayhem. Until next month!

What’s Happening at MOSH By Kristi Taylor

Christina Science

Back to School Buzz How can it be? Summer is coming to an end and First Coast students are gearing up for another year of school. If you’re an educator, you’re probably in full lesson planning mode. The Museum of Science & History is here as an educational resource whether you’re a public or private school teacher, a homeschool parent, or a pre-school parent looking for a little extra enrichment for your child.

MOSH offers dozens of program choices all designed to bring textbook learning to life. Topics include science, history and astronomy and they all meet Sunshine State Standards so that the kids are actually learning while covering grade-appropriate curriculum. Field trips are designed to fit your needs. Want to attend a history program and a program in the Bryan-Gooding Planetarium? Or a science program only? MOSH can customize a trip just for you. And, all groups will of course be able to explore Museum exhibits, even special exhibits like Megalodon: Largest Shark that Ever Lived through September 14 and Odyssey’s Shipwreck! Pirates & Treasure opening October 11. Megalodon tells the remarkable story of a predator who ruled the seas more than two million years ago and Shipwreck puts visitors at the helm of marine exploration as they explore shipwrecks and recovered treasure. Once a month, MOSH presents special programming for homeschool families and groups. Each program consists of a 45-minute interactive educational show as well as suggested “Try this at Home” experiments or activities to deepen the learning experience. Due to popular demand, MOSH also incorporates workshops for the homeschool educators that will give them tips on teaching methods. And, don’t forget about the popular Little Learners program held the second Wednesday of every month. Program goers get early access to the Museum and two special programs for the discounted rate of $5 per person (ages 3 & up). Can’t make it to MOSH? Museum Educators are also available to visit your school to present traveling versions of on-campus programs. To make reservations for any of MOSH’s Education Programs, contact the Educations Program Coordinator at 904-396 -MOSH (6674), ext. 226.

The casual atmosphere here is beautiful! Dark woods and tile floors give this cozy eatery a contemporary warm and elegant feel. Service was equally as impressive and within minutes of my smiling server seating me there was a piping hot (and complimentary) tempura-battered crabmeat appetizer on the table for me to sample. This terrific tapa was drizzled with a sour eel sauce and was an indication of the phenomenal fish dishes to come.

presentation of my sushi lunch. This work of art had 6 large pieces of fresh, premium sushi (chef’s choice), California Roll and was a complete visual treat. A radish painstakingly carved into a flower, glowing lighted accent, beet ribbons and small twig tower was just gorgeous. I simply could not believe that so much detail went into a “lunch special”! I truly did not want to ruin my fantastic food display by eating this amazing art initially, but a thousand pictures later and the comfort of knowing that this masterpiece was carefully archived, sushi consumption delightfully began. The fish was incredibly fresh and this was affirmed again by management stating that their fish delivery happens 4 times a week. Cuisine Eighteen years ago, Ted and Carol Emerson settled in Jacksonville and bought the place where they now prepare Ted’s signature fish chowder. The tomato base chowder is filled with fish, shrimp, potatoes, vegetables, and the right hint of spices. The chowder is served with garlic toast, and it comes in little cooking pots with handles. Makes it easier to get every last drop.

CHOWDER TED’S Photo by Dorothy Fletcher

today CHOWDER TED’S TacoLu.com Whenever I want to immerse myself in the real Florida, I head north on Hecksher Drive. I cross the majestic Dames Point Bridge, pass bustling Blount Island, and marvel at marshes, swamps, and wetlands teeming with wildlife. I see shrimp boats, Navy vessels, and the Mayport Ferry, but the best part is finding restaurants along the way that provide wonderful Florida seafood. Just before the bridge that crosses Brown’s Creek, there is a great place called Chowder Ted’s that is just what I am talking about. It is not fancy, since it is actually a converted ice cream and hotdog store once called Jabber’s. One can still see the sliding window in the wall where ice cream cones were delivered to hot customers.

My husband Hardy and I enjoyed a lovely lunch at Chowder Ted’s recently. Along with the chowder, Hardy ate the Oyster Po’ Boy while I had the fried grouper sandwich on a Kaiser roll. Both meals were inexpensive—$9.00 for the Grouper Sandwich, $6 for the Oyster Po’ Boy, and $4.25 for each small pot of chowder. Good thing we had cash, though—no credit or debit cards are honored there. Chowder Ted’s is closed Sunday and Monday, but is open Tuesday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. the Mayport Ferry to get there. MIAMI

First head down to Miami a little early and enjoy all that it has to offer. Miami, Florida, has always billed itself as a travel destination. Warm weather, sandy beaches and bright sunshine were selling points more than 100 years ago, just as they are today. But Miami’s allure extends beyond its shores. People from all over the Caribbean and Latin America have settled in Miami, giving the city its distinctive, lively international character. The warm-weather fun is still a big attraction, but the biggest draw is the cosmopolitan flavor coupled with all the great restaurants, sports teams (Dolphins, Heat, Hurricanes and Marlins) and upscale sheen—plus a long list of TV shows that have “Miami” in their titles. South Beach, with its cheerful, sherbet-colored art-deco buildings and palm-tree-lined avenues, is the center of Miami’s trendy dining and nightlife scene. Other corners of Miami, including Coconut Grove and Coral Gables, offer their own versions of fine living and colorful happenings. And don’t overlook the natural world—though you may have to drive to the Everglades to get a good view of it. MUST SEE OR DO Sights—The breathtaking view of the city from the MacArthur Causeway at night; Everglades National Park;

GREAT STIRRUP CAY

Great Stirrup Cay is Norwegian Cruise Line’s private Bahamian island. The 250-acre/100-hectare island recently underwent a major, two-phase renovation: The company invested US$20 million on the upgrade. During the first phase, NCL created a new entrance channel for tenders and built a new arrival area, allowing for an expansion of the island’s main beach area. Additions in phase two included food and beverage areas, a marina, private beachfront cabanas, a bandstand, a straw market and a children’s play area. Following the renovations, the island has significantly more activities, including a stingray-encounter experience, personal watercraft and a floating Aqua Park.

NASSAU

Located on the island of New Providence, Nassau is the capital of the Bahamas. You’ll find the islands’ best sightseeing and historic buildings there. Also expect to find a crowd: Nassau is a very busy place, thanks to the high volume of cruise-ship passengers. In addition to the attractions in Nassau proper, there are a number of tourist sites on Paradise Island, a spot of land off Nassau that has been transformed into a high-rise gambling and leisure haven. It’s connected to the capital by two arched, oneway bridges. To have a good time in Nassau, approach the port with an open mind. Even though it’s an international city and commercial center—and firmly a part of the present— it still maintains its old-world island flavor. Things may take a little longer than you’re used to. Slow your pace as you explore Nassau’s rich history, tranquil beaches and turquoise waters—one of the best commodities of the Bahamas.

MUST SEE OR DO Sights—The Georgian government buildings and Garden of Remembrance in Parliament Square; the Nassau Public Library and Museum, a jail-turned-library; Fort Fincastle and Queen’s Staircase; Fort Charlotte; Bay Street Straw Market; the calm setting of the Versailles Gardens and 12th-century Augustinian cloister on Paradise Island. Museums—Bahamian art at The National Art Gallery of the Bahamas; history exhibits at Pirates of Nassau. Memorable Meals—Graycliff for the old mansion’s architecture; homemade pasta and filet mignon at Cafe Matisse; the fresh catch at The Poop Deck near the marina; elegant and romantic Luciano’s of Chicago for its great views; the fish-fry true Bahamian vibe of Arawak Cay at Twin Brothers Seafood and Steakhouse; contemporarychic atmosphere at Dune. Late Night—The casinos of Cable Beach and Atlantis Resort; sophisticated drinks at Bullion Bar; dancing at Charlie’s on the Beach or Club Waterloo. Walks—Climbing the Queen’s Staircase; strolling along the white sands of Cabbage Beach on Paradise Island; visiting the shops and restaurants along downtown’s Bay Street and sidestreets. For those who are children of the 90’s, Panic! at the Disco evokes memories of the middle school years. The phase where styles and personalities changed weekly, bad hygiene and hair were acceptable and hanging around skate parks was the most popular past time. Middle schoolers could be found cruising down school hallways singing along to hits like “I Write Sins not Tragedies” and “New Perspective.” While only in high school, the group easily climbed the top of the charts with their first demo album. With seven albums and numerous awards and nominations under their belt, Panic! At the Disco is the anthem of this generation.

As a young turk on the contemporary jazz scene, saxophonist Jackiem Joyner is far from complacent and unadventurous in his sound and style. Not afraid to challenge the fan base that took him to No. 1 twice and Top 3 two more times on the Billboard chart, Joyner was daring on his fifth album, “Evolve,” by Artistry Music/Mack Avenue Records. It’s his first which he wrote and produced the entire set. The album included “Generation Next,” an up-tempo urban-pop track with vibrant flashes of strings that provide a contrast to Joyner’s gentle melodic sax.

The Offspring, having just released the seminal album “Smash,” lead the rising tide of California punk alongside Bad Religion and Pennywise. Those same headliners will join together for the first time since that memorable moment and bring the event across North America. ELLIS PAUL STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

A veteran, constantly touring troubadour, Ellis Paul is one of the most respected artists in the folk/singersongwriter genre. He has performed 150 to 200+ shows for 20+ years appearing at Carnegie Hall in NYC, the Kennedy Center in Washington,DC, and clubs, festivals and coffeehouses all over the world. Since even before Ellis’ song “The World Ain’t Slowin’ Down” came out as the title track to Jim Carrey’s blockbuster film, “Me, Myself and Irene,” singer-songwriter Ellis Paul has been impressing audiences and earning loyal fans around the world with his meticulously written songs and compelling live shows. As one of the top American singersongwriters, Ellis has won numerous awards including an unprecedented 15 Boston Music Awards. He is the 2014 University of Maine commencement speaker and honorary degree recipient and will be inducted into the Maine Music Hall of Fame along with Don McLean and Howie Day as well. It’s Paul’s literate streak that inspires television and film to frequently feature his songs in numerous TV shows as well as several Hollywood films such as the aforementioned: “Me, Myself & Irene” and “Hall Pass” and “Shallow Hal”, directed by his big fans, The Farrelly Brothers. Ellis was heavily influenced by the folk stylings of Woody Guthrie, and some have said Paul has successfully bridged the gap between traditional and modern folk music.

In 2012, The Dog Apollo released their first EP called “Buffalo Fire” and soon after that they began working to hone their craft for their second EP “Pariah” which was released the following year. Fans have drawn comparisons of their work to that of Interpol, The Nationals and The Smiths, but the indie rock band describes their sound as honest and sincere. “I feel like

THE BAMA GAMBLERS STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Rock music’s origins rely heavily from sounds originating in the American South. Many stars from the first wave of 1950s rock and roll such as Bo Diddley, Elvis Presley, and Jerry Lee Lewis hailed from the Deep South. The Bama Gamblers are no exception.

This Auburn, Alabama-based rock band formed in 2010 during their time attending Auburn University. The band started off like most bands - as a strict cover band - but much like releasing an animal into the wild, The Bama Gamblers quickly acclimated into the music industry by writing their first collection of original songs. Lead guitarist, Matt Alemany explains, “we started mixing our original material amongst the Lynyrd Skynyrd and Marshall Tucker Band covers and people started asking us, ’who wrote that last one?’… Our fans were surprised when we told them it was one of our own tunes.” The Bama Gamblers’ influences shine through during live performances like headlights on a stretch of empty highway. With a classic, polished,

southern vibe soaked in dueling electric guitars and honky-tonk piano, the band’s free-spirited attitude on stage is reminiscent of the rock n’ roll greats before them. Lead vocalist and bassist, Bo Flynn comments, ”in 2014 it’s tough to try and produce something that hasn’t already been done by another band. In my opinion, rather than hiding behind the fact that you are heavily influenced by a certain artist, why not bare it all and let everyone know who your heroes are.” While headlining shows at notable music venues in eight different states, The Bama Gamblers welcome the opportunity to play alongside other bands chasing the same dream, and have made some great friends along the way. In May, The Bama Gamblers released their debut album ”Iron Mountain” that Flynn describes as the “perfect playlist for a good night out ... and then waking up in the morning.”

JOE BENNETT FROM WORLD GONE

Hailing from a rusted old shed behind a trailer park on the Westside of Jacksonville, World Gone is preparing to assault your life and senses with a freak audio apocalypse like none before. Years of pent up aggression and disgust with state of our so called civilized society and clustered masses of trendy spineless media outlets have bred a wholeheartedly honest and vigorously explosive combination of volatile ingredients forming the thing know as World Gone. Singer and front man Joe Bennett is no newcomer to the storm known as the music business. Formerly with platinum selling artist Cold and other local Jacksonville heavy hitters like Snagglepuss and Order by Chaos, Joe has set out to make a difference not just for one group of listeners but all listeners.

BUZZ: In music and out, who are your mentors? Joe Bennett: Band wise it’s probably Kiss, AC/DC, Van Halen, Alice Cooper, and Black Sabbath for starters. I

listened to a lot of Ozzy, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and Motörhead after that. Those bands built my foundation. Scooter Ward from Cold was a huge influence on helping me understand the way the music business works and what it’s like to be on a major label tour. I was with them for the “Year of the Spider” tour as a sound guy. Later, I was asked to join Cold and played guitar for them on the 2009 reunion tour. Terry Balsamo from Evanescence was also on that tour so I was surrounded by veterans and learned a lot.

CP: How about football. Where are you going with JU football? DH: We are comfortable being in the Pioneer football league. We’re comfortable being with our 10 sister institutions that share our love of academics and couple that with a love of athletics. Athletics is a fabric of what we are (at JU). Of our 4,000 graduate and undergraduate students, 12% are student athletes, 10% are student veterans, so you have a one in four chance when you bump into a student on campus that they have some kind of an athletic inclination, either a division one varsity athlete or someone who is a student veteran.

CP: This is the first time that you have had this specific role and what did you not know you didn’t know before you starting this? DH: I knew that there would be a lot of things I wouldn’t know. First thing I did after I was appointed, I called two buddies who are affiliated with athletics. I asked “what are the four things that are going to get me in trouble.” They said “compliance is number one, it’s numbers two, three and four.” And budget and finance. And making sure you have good relationships with the coaches and to synchronize CP: There has been talk about where football might with the mission of the university. be going. There was talk about moving to a bigger conference. That’s not on your radar? CP: Where are things going with JU Athletics? What does the future look like? DH: Not at all. Not right now. We’ve started a programmatic review. DH: JU Athletics is very stable and moving in the right direction. We want to see how the financials compare by student athlete and We’re going to make JU basketball relevant again. We have great by sport. This university is on a great glide path and it would be coaches with Tony Jasick on the men’s side and coach Yo (Yolette absolutely ridiculous not to synchronize exactly what we’re doing McPhee-McCuin). Let’s face it, the history of JU sports is most closely with athletics with the admissions office. Right now, it’s about maintaining and promoting excellence.

Jacksonville Sports Council Makes a Splash When Alan Verlander helped launch the Jacksonville sports council, he knew he had to make a splash to motivate sports fans in northeast Florida to join. Part of his strategy was to bring in big name, nationally known speakers for quarterly JaxSports luncheons. And in Jacksonville, what better way to start than talking football? ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit has the honor of being the speaker at the first luncheon, set for August 21st at the Hyatt Regency Jacksonville Riverfront. “These luncheons are a benefit to the members of the Jacksonville Sports Council (JAXSPORTS) and are provided to foster enthusiasm and excitement for sports in Jacksonville,” Verlander said. “This first luncheon is the only one that will be open for the public to purchase tickets. To attend the rest of the quarterly luncheons, you must be a JAXSPORTS member.” The council currently has 350 members with a first year goal of 500 members. Memberships start at $24 per month. The luncheons won’t only be centered around football, though. “The Speaker Series luncheons will feature very high level, season appropriate speakers chosen to provide our members with an inside scoop on the wide world of sports, not just football,” Verlander said. The Jacksonville Sports Council has plans of bringing big sporting events to town that will provide an economic shot in the arm for the city and create great events for the resident of northeast Florida to enjoy. Already, JaxSports has partnered with House of Fame MMA to bring four annual mixed martial arts events to the Jacksonville Veterans Memorial Arena per year. The first of these events is scheduled for September 6. And after that? “You’ll have to be a member to find out,” joked Verlander. “We are currently reviewing over 40 bids and determining which sets up best for Jacksonville, along with trying to create some Jacksonville specific events as well.” These are just the first step of a new venture, but Verlander has some goals for the future. “We want to look back and make sure first, we have accomplished our mission: ‘To enhance and positively impact quality of life and community pride, along with generating economic impact and growth for Northeast Florida through professional and amateur sports,’ Verlander said. “Then I see us at the hub of all youth, amateur and collegiate sports and strong partners with all the professional sports teams and organizations. In addition, we will be partners with the City of Jacksonville, Visit Jacksonville and area CVB’s ensuring that Jacksonville is recognized as a global sports city and leader.” Check out more blogs at iwantaBUZZ.com. What is heat illness?

Heat illness occurs when the body builds up heat faster than it can be dissipated. Consequences can range from mild heat exhaustion to severe, and possibly deadly, heat stroke. Heat illness can affect many systems in the body, including your brain, gut, muscles, kidneys and liver.

What are the signs and symptoms of heat illness?

Symptoms can range from fatigue, thirst, and muscle cramping to dizziness, nausea, and headache. As heat illness progresses, it can even cause disorientation and collapse. Sweating may be heavy; however, sweating can even stop altogether and the skin can instead be hot and dry.

Who is at risk for heat illness?

Anyone that spends time outside while the temperature, and especially humidity, is high is at risk. Dehydration, poor physical fitness, lack of sleep and recent illness also place you at increased risk. Children and the elderly are also particularly susceptible to heat illness because they do not release heat as effectively.

How is heat illness treated?

If you think you, or someone you are with, is suffering from heat illness you should immediately stop any physical activity, get indoors, and get cooled off. Ice water immersion is often used at large sporting events. If that is not available, fans, ice bags and removing clothing can be helpful. Please keep in mind that heat illness can be a medical emergency and any fainting or confusion should prompt you to call 911 for help.

How can you prevent heat illness?

Acclimatize to the heat slowly over a 10-14 day period. Avoid exercising or spending time outside during the hottest part of the day and take breaks if needed. Maintain adequate hydration and do not wear excessive clothing. Also avoid training while you are sick, as your body will build up heat more rapidly.

How much fluid is enough?

Optimal fluid intake varies for each individual, but a good guide is to drink enough fluid to keep your urine light-colored, not dark. Fluids should consist of water and electrolyte-containing beverages, not fruit juice, coffee, energy drinks, or soda. Most people do well with 16-20 ounces an hour before exercise and 6-8 ounces every 2030 minutes while outside. Fluid replacement after exercising should be 16 ounces for every pound lost, however, most people do well with 16-32 ounces within 30 minutes. A helpful tool is that one gulp is usually about 0.5-1 ounce. What are the changes to the DMV Regulations for CDL drivers? Prior to January 11, 2014, when a driver with a CDL license received a traffic citation, we would be able to schedule it for a hearing and obtain an Adjudication Withheld on behalf of our client. This way there would be no points assessed on their license and it would not impact their job. Now, per the Florida DMV Regulation, CDL drivers are no longer able to get a withhold of adjudication, and they enter a no contest plea, they will be adjudicated guilty, and their job will be in jeopardy.

You may not have realized, but during the past five years, the Jacksonville Film & Television Office has permitted over 300 film, television and digital media productions. The economic impact for our city from this work is more than $15 million.

Over the years, numerous big name motion pictures and television movies have been filmed in Jacksonville, including “BASIC” and “G.I. That includes 79 production days that resulted in 236 people being hired. Numerous commercials were also filmed (Chase Bank, Infinity, Chrysler, Jeep, AARP), TV Series (“American Grilled,” “Dead of Night,” “Starting Strong,” “Sorrentinos,” “Project Start Up”), as were several corporate, industrial and photography productions. The Jacksonville Film & Television Office strives to have a significant impact on Jacksonville’s economy with job creation and retention by actively marketing and attracting film, television and digital media business to the area. INSIDE LOOK What is Ancient Olive?

Owner Jeffrey Schrader states, “Ancient Olive is a gourmet food tasting room within the confines of a fine art gallery.” Our original concept started as a gourmet food store featuring the World’s finest extra virgin olive oils and balsamic vinegars, which has garnered us a position as a best place in North America to purchase quality olive oils by Tom Mueller, NYT best-selling author of “Extra Virginity” and TruthInOliveOil.com. We’ve recently been awarded the coveted Ultra Premium designation, making us at the time the 15th store in the US and Canada to have this designation.

f you haven’t been to the Ancient Olive yet, you owe it to your taste buds to do so! I recently had the opportunity to meet up with owners Bryan Behling and Jeffrey Schrader to talk about AO and their extremely unique business model. And during my amazing experience within their store I discovered that this was not just a typical shopping jaunt locale – this place was a fun, artimbued sensory extravaganza and deliciously interactive (and educational) customer experience! This gourmet gallery is nothing short of a daily, food event venue and truly is NOT to be missed when visiting St. Augustine. Here is what Bryan and Jeffrey had to say about their award-winning shop: Article by Monica Stouder and Photos by Monica Lea Imagery, MonicaLea.com

We offer fine gourmet foods from local and international artisans at prices most families can afford, and you can taste everything before you buy! Our shops are beautifully appointed and feature original works of fine art; our current collection is valued at more than $500,000.

Client’s favorite products?

We offer an amazing balsamic made in the traditional style that’s aged up to 18-years, it’s hard for us to keep enough on hand! Our Blood Orange olive oil is a big favorite and is so good with our Dark Chocolate or Cinnamon Pear balsamic vinegar. We have big fan base of unique French and US mustards, and sell a great deal of beautiful olives we import from Spain. There’s so much to choose from!

Where can we find you?

Shop locations: St. Augustine in the Casa Monica Hotel, Winter Park, and in The Villages in Lake Sumter Landing. The Ancient Olive of Savannah, Georgia will open in September. Product locations: Villagio restaurant of The Marriott Renaissance in World Golf Village; on the tables of the 95 Cordova Restaurant in The Casa Monica, and soon on the tables of The Alfond Inn in Winter Park. www.TheAncientOlive.com We have a phenomenal 2-minute video that provides a great visual representation of our shops and the concept from our customers’ point of view and from us: Vimeo.com/89752924

Matthew: The sparkling cosmo is one of my favorites.

I love handcrafted cocktails. People love our sangria. We let it soak for a day-and-a-half with our fruits. We add a little bit of juice but its primarily flavor is from the fruit soaking. We also make a mojito with mint that we grow outside. We infuse our simple syrup with fresh chocolate mint and it is wonderful. It’s hard to pick a favorite.

Nightlife Barbeque sauce – the staple of summer cooking. I grow weary of the same ole ketchup/tomato based sauces. On a day when the early morning temp was already 85, I decided to challenge myself with creating a light, unique barbeque sauce recipe deserving of the Harpoon UFO White beer. To be honest, the lightness of the Harpoon UFO White, with notes of orange & coriander (and I swear I detected a hint of banana! Some say a note of hay – I’ve personally never tasted hay!), I felt this was the perfect beer to meet this challenge. Warning: this is such a fabulous summer beer, you’ll have your own challenge to not drink several while you’re making this!

What is unique about Bo’s? Bo’s Club is unique because of the vast range of clientele and our modern up to date feel. We have an inside main room of over 4000 sq. ft. that flows openly onto our outdoor deck. Describe the atmosphere: Our atmosphere is very modern, yet relaxed. When is Happy Hour? Happy Hour is daily from 2 p.m.-8 p.m. flavors to meld. Easy, huh? Make sure you cook meat low and slow. Brush the meat every 5 to 10 minutes, depending on the meat and the cut of the meat. Make sure you allow any meat rest before cutting into it, or you’ll lose all the fabulous juices. Copyright © Henriettibles 2014 All Rights Reserved.

Brew Time By Marc Wisdom This time of year signals the arrival of the Great Pumpkin. No, not the elusive character Linus of Peanuts fame sat in a pumpkin patch waiting on. This Great Pumpkin, or more correctly, pumpkins, are the pumpkin beers that begin appearing on the local beer store shelves in August. But, the history and origins of the beer are where the real story lies. There are many quarrelling factions on whether modern pumpkin brews have a true style history. Some maintain that the flavored fall brew is a completely modern fabrication and that the current brews we call pumpkin beers have no historical basis at all. Others point to recipes uncovered by historians that indicate pumpkins have been used as a fermentable in beer for hundreds of years. The detractors counter that many things were used in historic brews as fermentables before malt was readily available in the American colonies and that a pumpkin beer isn’t a pumpkin beer without pumpkin pie spices like cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, and allspice. The argument continues on yearly, back and forth until someone has had too many pumpkin ales and passes out. So, what is the truth of the matter? Let’s find out! Sherman, set the Wayback Machine for Philadelphia in the year 1717.

Pompion is an archaic word for pumpkin and, as you can see from the recipe, a very common ingredient in beer along with apples, corn, parsnips, and a number of other oddities. But, as the detractors would say, there is no mention of spices in the recipe; therefore it cannot be a pumpkin beer as we currently know them.

“In Hadley, around 1800, beer was generally brewed once a week; malt, hops, dried pumpkin, dried apple pairings and some rye bran, birch twigs and other things were put into the brewing kettle and the liquor was strained through a sieve.” Here we again see the usage of pumpkins and apples in the brew kettle. But, we also see other additives like hops and birch twigs for flavoring. We also see that malt is used in this recipe. Why then is the pumpkin added? It seems that there are sufficient fermentables for the yeast to eat without the need for pumpkin as one. The only conclusion can be is that pumpkin was added for flavor.

Follow me on twitter @beerapostle Sourcing Suds is a column by the Beer Apostle, Brian Little, recognizing beer that’s served and brewed locally.

So, does that put to bed the feud over the historical beginnings of the brews we call pumpkin beers today? Not by a long shot. But, it does give you something to chew on while you enjoy this year’s crop of pumpkin brews. GOLDEN TAP BEER OF THE MONTH

Cigar City has been churning out great beers for several years now. But, perhaps one of their most anticipated yearly brews in Good Gourd, a pumpkin beer that presents a pumpkin and spice flavor but, does not come across as overly-sweet. The beer is a malt forward entry into a style category that sometimes overuses the gourd’s innate sugars. The result is a strong beer with a prevalent malt backbone and matching pumpkin and spice flavors.

In a recipe from the American Philosophical Society the use of pumpkins is plainly evident:

NIGHTLIFE EVENTS

By Brian Little

Fast forward to 1863 and a reference in a book – “History of Hadley” by Sylvester Judd – regarding the brewing of beer with pumpkin in it.

In the early days of America, malted barley was extremely hard to come by and had to be imported from England. This made the malt very expensive and out of the reach of the lower classes. So, in the spirit of true American ingenuity, colonists began searching for other items ton use as sugar in their brews. Pumpkins were indigenous to America, so colonists began using it in their beer.

“Let the Pompion be neaten in a Trough with Apples. The expressed juice is to be boiled in a Copper a considerable Time and carefully skimmed that there be no Remains of the fibrous Part of the Pulp. After the Intention is answered let the Liquor be hopped cooled fermented as Malt Beer.”

CIGAR CITY HOTTER THAN HELLES Style: Helles ABV: 5%

Hotter than Helles pours a hazy light golden color and gives a mildly sweet and musty aroma, The flavor follows the nose, offering notes of sweet malt, floral bitterness, bready yeast. The finish is slightly dry. This beer does the job of quenching all of your needs, especially in August when the Florida temps reach that hotter than hell(es) range. It’s light, crisp, and comes in a can. All of this adds up to a light and refreshing beer that’s perfect for laying-by-the-pool weather or floating down a lazy river. PROFESSOR DUBIOUS IS THE MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE PERSON IN THE WORLD BY A LARGE MARGIN. HERE, HE DEIGNS TO RESPOND TO YOUR ILL-INFORMED QUERIES. When my wife and I argue, I often try to make my point with analogies, but she never seems to understand. What’s the problem? - S. Beare, Baltimore, FL

Professor Dubious Says: Using an analogy

in a personal argument is like using a kitten to spread butter. The fur gets all matted, and the butter gets hair in it. Then when you try to get the hair out you get butter under your fingernails. Then after a few weeks, the fingernail butter gets rancid and starts to smell. At this point, no one will want to be around you long enough to listen to the argument you’re trying to make. And the kitten won’t be too happy either.

Do animals make art? - L. Cubby, Bismarck, MD

Professor Dubious Says: Besides humans, two other species are known to create art.

The first is bees. Bees create sculptures, using the medium most available to them, which is honey. Bees have been known to create honey sculptures up to 8 feet high. Because the medium of these sculptures is the same, it can be difficult for humans to discern the difference between a bee sculpture and bees’ store of

honey. It is suspected that bees also sometimes have trouble telling the difference. The other artistic species is dolphins. Dolphins create what are known as flipper poems, poetry consisting of a series of complex movements of a dolphin’s tail. A typical flipper poem might translate as: Tasty fish are plentiful in the waters blue and deep near the old rusty scuba diving equipment where that rude octopus used to live God, I love fish

How does a TV remote control work? - A. Bemily, Panda, ID

Professor Dubious Says: When you press

a button on a TV remote to change the channel, the remote emits an infrared signal. The infrared rays penetrate your skull and alter the connections between neurons in your brain. This alters your perception and emotional response to stimuli in a randomized fashion. Thus, each time you press the button, your mental response to what’s being presented on the TV is altered, and you keep pressing the button until you’re happy with what you’re seeing.

Hugging Etiquette There are two kinds of guys in this world: huggers and non-huggers. Here’s the etiquette rule: as a hugger is making his rounds, and comes across someone who extends his hand instead of his arms, it’s a shake and not a hug. Generally, huggers and non-huggers respect each other’s boundaries. As a committed nonhugger, I very rarely find myself having to “refuse” a hug. The line between hugger and non-hugger gets a little blurry though when guys are drinking. Well, in my experience, anyway. I try to surround myself with happy drinkers instead of angry drinkers. But being around happy drinkers comes with a price. Instead of them screaming and punching, they want to tell everyone how much they love them… and they want to hug. Such was the case last week, when my brothers and I ran into a group of cousins we had been close to, but hadn’t seen in years. After a few hours of drinking, I had to really work hard to avoid the hugs.

Knowing how drunks get, I just dodged to a different corner of the bar whenever the conversation got sappy. It worked for a while, but then I heard my brother say, “Where’s Eric? Have you given him a hug yet?” He knew exactly what he was doing. I tried to talk my way out if it with, “No, I’m cool, we’ll just shake on it.” But that wasn’t cutting it. This man (a 210 pound laborer made of alcohol soaked muscle) wanted his hug. I gave in, and tried the quick press and release. He wasn’t having any of that. Once he had his arms around me, he just about squeezed the air out. This set off a chain reaction, as everyone thought I was leaving, and that’s why I had consented to a hug. It’s like they all lined up. Just as soon as I’d escape one guy, another one would grab me. It went on and on, until I had hugged everyone in the place. Even people I didn’t know! I’d swear some people got me twice. Being traumatized, it was three days before I could hug my wife again. I’m just now getting over it.

August Horoscope Written by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

Aries (March 21- April 19)

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

You are in for some stimulation this month. Before you get all excited, another meaning of stimulation is encouragement. Yes, your friends (assuming you have more than one) are encouraged at how well you’re doing by yourself, but it’s time you get back out there and start seeing someone other than yourself.

Instead of feeling sorry for yourself, why don’t you go out and make someone’s day better. Think of someone else for once. Show them a good time and you might find yourself feeling good and having fun as well. Crazy concept I know.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

The competitor’s horoscope for you stated, “Mercury’s last full day in your income sector will make it important to keep your money hat on with Mars moving on you his last 2 weeks.” What?!? Apparently Mars is a dirty rotten thief. Money hat? Those people are so dumb.

Gemini (May 21 – June 21)

Are you feeling down in the love category? Well send me two easy payments of $19.95 and I will tell you how great you are! Don’t worry what everyone is saying behind your back. I will let you know love is right around the corner. But wait, there’s more! Just send the money.

Gemini, you’re holding the winning hand. Full house of moxie over flirtatious (or whatever poker reference you care to understand). You will be punching a few notches in the ol’ bedpost, or belt, whatever is easier for you to keep track. Line them up and knock them out.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Cancer (June 22 – July 22)

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

More of a fighter than a lover this month. Something about the Suns alignment has you all out of line (see what I did there?). Regardless you’re going to be all pissy (official term) this month, which leaves no room for romance. Hopefully you are single or have tolerant friends.

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

It’s time to drop the dead weight. You have put up with your mate and their issues for too long, but enough is enough. Yeah! About time. Welcome to Dumpsville. Population your ex-partner. You’ll thank me later or send the you-were-wrong emails to idontcare@ youarenowsingle.com.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

Where is your relationship heading? Nowhere is the correct answer, but you won’t listen (surprise). Yes some parts are ok, but as a whole, it’s a disaster. This is a big town. There are several other options that will keep you just as unsatisfied as you are right now.

Instead of complaining all the time, maybe you should stop and realize how good you got it. Ever think of that? No, it’s just easier to notice that everyone else has someone and blah, blah, blah. Shut-up already. Maybe then you won’t be single. If this is what runs through you mind when looking at your mate, “He/her is so hot, I just wish he/her would be treat me better,” then you are the problem not your mate. Ever hear the line, “Can’t fix stupid.” Well, in this relationship, you’re the stupid. Figure it out.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Real life isn’t working, might as well try the Internet for love. Maybe you should update your Facebook profile. For one, your picture screams desperate. Accurate, but not helping. Also, it’s time you post one from at least within the last year. Finally, update your info. Gilmore Girls isn’t even on TV anymore.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

You won’t be able to focus long enough to find love this month. I know shiny objects are easily attracting your attention that’s why it doesn’t matter how I end this horoscope you will never get to the end of this sentence before something else grabs your atten…..
