SPOTLIGHT

Did you know that there are numerous crimes in the State of Florida that require a mandatory conviction and adjudication of guilt? Per Florida Statutes, these offenses include: Driving Under the Influence, Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, Fleeing or Attempting to Elude a Law Enforcement Officer, all Capital, Life, or First-Degree Felonies, and all Second-Degree Felonies (unless there are specific written findings from the Judge or a written request from the State Attorney’s Office). If you are arrested, it is important to contact an attorney to see what possible sentences and ramifications you may be facing.

Are you an unintentional business owner? It seems like everywhere you turn today, you see people who are freelancing or otherwise participating in the “gig” economy, but when do these people become business owners? A person becomes a business owner when they are not pursuing their work as a hobby – in other words, they are trying to make a profit or actually make a profit in three of the last five business years.

BUZZ: What brought you to

Jacksonville?

Michael Stanski: My wife is from Jacksonville around the Ponte Vedra area. I also attended law school here. BUZZ: Where did you attend

law school? MS: I went to law school at Florida Coastal School of Law.

Being a business owner is a great option for many people because of its inherent benefits; however, there are some major pitfalls to be aware of as a business owner. If you plan on starting a business, or think you have become an unintentional business owner, consider discussing your situation with a business attorney.

BUZZ: What is your specific area of law? MS: I usually represent military members and veterans with divorce cases and anything dealing with military or federal law.

INTEGRITY LAW, P.A.

1934 Retaw Street Jacksonville, FL 32210 (904) 674-3460 IntegrityLawJax.com

Collaborative divorce is a problem-solving process that allows a divorcing couple to end their marriage and restructure their family with the goal of reducing the stress, cost and delays of a litigated divorce. The process is designed to facilitate the efficient resolution of disputes by utilizing a team approach. The team consists of the spouse’s attorneys along with a neutral mental health professional (MHP). The MHP’s job is to facilitate discussions related to the issues that must be resolved to conclude the divorce. Due to the efficiency in which problems are solved, a collaborative divorce is generally cost neutral as compared to a litigated divorce even with the added MHP professional fees. If your desire is to get through your divorce with as little emotional and financial impact as possible, consider collaborative divorce as an option. 6

BUZZ: How do you set yourself apart from other firms in the area? MS: I practice a unique type of law so not a lot of other firms provide what I can provide. The competition is at a minimum. BUZZ: What is your greatest accomplishment as an attorney? MS: Personally, the greatest accomplishment is being an outlet for people and helping them in a very important way. BUZZ: In five years where do you see your business? MS: In five years, I would like to see my firm become more statewide. I don’t see myself expanding the firm very much, except hiring a few paralegals. I have a few out of state clients right now, but in five years I would like to have a lot more.

How to Handle Your Child’s Stress About Timesharing Brandon Stanko Karstaedt & Stanko, P.A.

Perry Mason It’s increasingly common for children of divorce to live between two homes as shared parental responsibility and equal timesharing (visitation) become prevalent in Florida divorce actions. While these arrangements provide the benefit of meaningful relationships with both parents to children, they can also result in increased stress, as children may feel they are living out of a suitcase. Children may struggle with feeling out of place, and the lack of permanency can negatively affect their relationships with their step or half siblings as well as with their parents. Parents can help their children adjust to these changes by offering love and support in a variety of ways. It’s important for a child to know that they are a valued and respected member of both households, and not merely a visitor. To ease the frequent transitions your child will face, consider some of the following: - Establish an arriving ritual. Rituals provide an emotional connection so children can integrate themselves into a different environment. It could be something as simple as a special handshake, a high five or a hug. - Value and protect each child’s space and belongings. Assign individual storage places, and instruct siblings not to touch other kids’ belongings, even when they’re away. - Give kids choices when appropriate. Choices empower children and allow them to feel as though they have some control over their lives.

- Assign chores and responsibilities. Children feel welcome and valuable when they contribute to a functioning household.

Sarah Sullivan Jericho Road Legal Service Ministry

Atticus Finch

- Keep a calendar on the refrigerator so there is no confusion on who is coming and going. It may help to sync calendars with your former spouse as well, so that everyone is on the same page. - Explain what is happening to the children who may feel left out and let them know that they are special to you. Jonathan Goodman Jonathan H. Goodman, P.A.

Perry Mason By making an effort to be sensitive and mindful of the constantly changing dynamic in share, you can give them the stability they need, even when they’re growing up in two different homes.

What is a Florida Simplified Divorce?

Who watches the television show “Married at First Sight?” For all the fans out there, you know that Season 4 took place in Miami, Florida. Out of the three couples that married at first sight, one couple decided to get divorced at the end of the show. As the experts say from the beginning of the show, the marriages are real and so are the divorces. Most likely for Season 4 couples, a simplified dissolution of marriage, as the Florida courts call it, is all that is needed to divorce the couples. A simplified Florida divorce has a few requirements. First, the couple must both agree to use the simplified divorce procedure. Second, the couple may not have any minor children together. Third, at least one party to the simplified divorce must have resided in Florida for the 6 months immediately preceding the filing of the petition for divorce. Fourth, the parties must have made provisions for the division of the marital assets and debts within their divorce agreement. As the couples on the show are complete strangers when they wed, division of assets and debts is likely not a big issue.

Finally, both parties must sign the petition for the simplified divorce and all other paperwork needed to comply with the procedures. The couple from Season 4, or any other Florida couple, can be fully divorced within one calendar month. Florida requires that only 20 days pass from the date of filing the petition for divorce to the date the court holds the hearing for the divorce. As indicated by its name, a simplified divorce is merely simpler than a traditional divorce. Buying or Selling a Home?

The VA has awarded me 100 percent disability, but Social Security turned me down. Isn’t that illegal? The VA uses different criteria to determine whether you are disabled than the Social Security Administration does, so your VA award doesn’t necessarily guarantee that you will get SSDI benefits. However, the Social Security Administration is supposed to consider your VA disability as a factor in making its determination. The VA requires a thorough examination and documentation of your medical condition before awarding benefits, so you should be sure that the Social Security Administration has that evidence to consider along with your other evidence. An experienced attorney can discuss this with you to help find a solution.

POLICY TIPS & TRICKS

PROBATE

DIVORCE

REAL ESTATE If I get arrested for DUI, should I take the breath test or refuse it? This is a complicated question that does not come with an easy or clearcut answer! The most important things to understand are that (1) the legal limit in Florida is .08 and (2) if you don’t take the test, your license will be suspended for a year (or for 18 months if you’ve refused before). In addition, if you’ve refused before, you will probably be charged with a crime for refusing again (a misdemeanor). If you blow under the limit, you will not be “un-arrested.” You will still be booked into jail on a DUI charge. The first appearance judge should take into consideration the results of the breath test when setting your bond, but it’s not necessarily a “get out of jail free” card. The State Attorney’s Office will decide later whether to proceed with a DUI charge. Sometimes charges are pursued even if the blow is under the limit. If you are charged with DUI, you should always talk to a lawyer before deciding how to proceed. It’s a serious charge with serious consequences. ARTS UNLEASHED Austin Alston StellersGallery.com

A modern-day Jackson Pollack or Kandinsky living in Jacksonville? Many compare the work of Austin Alston to both of these artists, but he is a unique artist creating works that dance across the canvas.

Roger David TACJacksonville.org

While hiking in the Florida Mountains, Roger David had a life-changing encounter with what is statistically speaking the deadliest species of bear known to man. The vicious Koala. “I looked in its eyes and knew right away only one of us would make it off that mountain alive,” said David.

Alston is a self-taught artist who moved to Jacksonville eight years ago. An accidental happening brought him to the world of art. He purchased a storage bin and found art supplies which opened the door to his passion for painting. He’s inspired by the music he listens to while painting. The music, no matter the genre, guides his brush to create aggressively active movements of what seem like tiny figures at times. His style is developed by layering paints and then removing them in a precise surgical manner. This highly guarded secret technique often impresses the viewer with the same comments, “how did he do that?”

The confrontation lasted for eight days involving brutal bloody physical skirmishes, as well as deeply psychological mind games of deception. Both opponents were driven to the very brink in an epic struggle for survival. In the end, David managed to vanquish his foe and emerge victorious, but at what cost? His mind shattered, his spirit torn asunder, he made a vow that would alter the course of his entire life, setting him on the path to find redemption and peace. “I decided to become a veterinarian in order to better understand the noble and majestic creatures that are our gift from nature.”

Austin Alston’s work can be seen at Stellers Gallery at 3139 Philips Highway or Blue Fish Restaurant at 3551 St. Johns Ave in Avondale.

Upon discovering that he was allergic to cats, he abandoned that pursuit and instead started learning how to paint. He is TAC gallery’s featured artist for August of 2017.

Sikes Productions wrapped principal photography for its short film, “Ortega River Rats.” The 20-minute film was written by Jacksonville resident and Writers Guild of America member Sharon Y. Cobb who will take the short to the 2017 American Film Market in Los Angeles to make a deal for a feature. The film’s story is based on Executive Producer Sikes’ idea of Ortega neighborhood kids searching for treasure of the 1930s gangster Machine Gun Kelly who reportedly hid out in Jacksonville.

Kelly’s hideout; a former Edison Avenue veterinary office; and a former 1910 general store in Riverside now serving as an Airbnb.

The production employed over 35 crew members and required five days of local catering on location for the crew and a cast of 15. If you don’t know what the Murals of Jacksonville are, then you’ll need to get out and tour these works of art that are creating a real BUZZ in the art world and beautifying our city. Jessica Santiago, President of Art Republic, is passionate about making Jacksonville an international art destination. In November of 2016 something unique happened in the Urban Core of Jacksonville. It was a mission to establish this downtown area as a “nationally-recognized Art District.” Santiago believes that art can bring an economic boom to Jacksonville and also unify the community by elevating the creative spirit and raising the consciousness of the city through the universal language of art. She and her team invited an international team of artists including: Case Maclaim, Reka, Phlegm, Kenor, Astro, Jason Woodside, INO, Guido van Helten, Borondo, René Romero Schuler, and Nico Holderbaum to create murals in this Urban Core. Jacksonville is a hidden gem of unique artistic express with art abounding in the downtown core. Many new galleries are opening like the Wall Street Fine Art Gallery. Citizens of Jacksonville aren’t aware of how the city has been enriched by this movement and pass by these magnificent works of art without any knowledge of the change they have brought. Yet Jacksonville is becoming a destination for the art community both nationally and internationally. This November, Art Republic will continue to expand with more murals and artistic expression through fashion, art and music. To view all the murals and their location, visit ArtRepublicJax.org. Florida Theatre FloridaTheatre.com Can you believe it’s already been 50 years since “The Jungle Book?” Bring the whole family to the Florida Theatre to relive the action, excitement and unforgettable songs in this beloved Disney movie. In this classic 1967 Walt Disney animation based on Rudyard Kipling’s book, Mowgli, an abandoned child raised by wolves, has his peaceful existence threatened by the return of the man-eating tiger, Shere Khan (George Sanders). Facing certain death, Mowgli must overcome his reluctance to leave his wolf family and return to the “man village.” But he is not alone on his quest: Aided by Bagheera the panther, and later by the carefree bear Balloo (Phil Harris), he braves the jungle’s many perils. Before the movie, experience an animal encounter from the Jacksonville Zoo and Gardens! The Summer Movie Classics at the Florida Theatre is sponsored by Regions Bank. Tickets are $7.50.

(904) 330-0269 TysonAndDensonLaw.com How hard is it to establish paternity in Florida if the father is not the one listed on the birth certificate? The potential father would file a lawsuit against the mother to establish paternity, timeshare, child support and other relief. Through the initiation of a paternity proceeding, a judge will either court order a paternity test or allow the parties to have a private paternity test. What is the court’s formula for determining child support payments? Child support is based on multiple factors including: mother’s income, father’s income, number of overnights the children have with each parent, number of children, health insurance costs for the children and other miscellaneous expenses. What issues arise in same sex parent adoptions in Florida? Paternity becomes a larger issue because many children born to same-sex couples are conceived via in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and will only have the DNA make-up of one of the parents. This poses an issue because the non-biologically related parent would not have the same rights as the biologically related parent would. Does the court set custody schedules or is it better to work them out amongst the parents? It is always better for the parents to work out a time-sharing arrangement amongst themselves, but the arrangement should be in writing, filed and recorded through the court. If divorced parents split custody and are deemed “hostile” to each other, how can that effect regular school issues? When parents cannot co-parent, the children often begin to miss assignments, begin to lie or make excuses regarding of why assignments have not been completed and grades may begin to fall.

Be Well: swimming

HEALTHY TAKE:

SET Performance

(904) 992-2001 • SETPerformance.com

SUIT UP FOR SWIMMING Summer is finishing up in the Sunshine State, but that’s never stopped the weather! The beaches are still bustling and outdoor pools are still open for business. Swimming is an amazing, low-impact component of any solid workout regimen. This cardio exercise improves strength and increases endurance. It also builds muscle and can help reduce blood pressure. For an effective workout, all you need is a quality athletic suit, wellfitting goggles and a silicon or latex cap (if you want to protect your eyes and hair). Don’t forget sunblock!

Making the Most of Vitamin Sea Vitamin C has long been recognized for its immunity boosting qualities, but in Jacksonville, Vitamin Sea is where it’s at. The sun, sand and salt air can be absolutely restorative. And don’t rule out the benefits of a good beach workout! Bring your goggles, cap and a buddy (never swim alone!) for an open water swim. The waves and current will provide more challenges than lap swimming, and it will be a great way to mix things up. Unroll your yoga mat on the sand for a peaceful practice. The instability of the beach will really force you to focus on your core and balance. Lace up your running shoes and head down to the packed sand for a few miles. Leave your headphones at home and concentrate on your form, breathing and the sounds of the waves. Don’t forget your sunscreen, and reap the health benefits of our beautiful coastline.

Make Waves in Your Fitness Routine Workouts don’t always need to be regimented and scheduled in order to be effective. Mix things up by getting out in your surroundings and making the most of what our location has to offer. The water in our oceans, inlets and rivers is perfect for resistance, core and both upper and lower body. Of course, open water swimming is a fantastic change from pool laps. Challenge yourself by taking a kayak or stand up paddle board tour (self-guided or with a guide). Ninety minutes of maintaining balance and paddling will get your heart rate pumping. Looking for something more daring? Consider surfing or waterskiing. These two sports are the perfect combination of fun and fat burning, and will leave you feeling accomplished (and exhausted!).

Way more than just a gym! Sanders Elite Training (SET) Performance is a program that uses a scientific approach to customize a workout specifically geared for your body. They use V02 testing, which measures how much oxygen your body actually consumes during workout. Ultrasound technology is also used to identify the fat and water content in your body. Through this specialized process, the personal trainers at SET Performance can determine the best way to maximize each individual’s performance in their weight loss and stability of joint movement for everyday activities. Jerrian Sanders, the founder of SET Performance, says they have a “90% success rate” through this method. The program can literally work for anyone, ranging from athletes to people wishing to develop corporate wellness through proper posture and exercise techniques to even the average couch potato. With a background in kinesiology, biomechanics and training professional athletes, you can rest assured that Sanders and his team knows exactly how to craft out a program to specifically reach your body goal.

Next time you want to work though shoulders, skip the weights and hit the waves. You won’t be sorry.

HEALTH BUZZ ON // SNACKING ON ACAI BOWLS Summer is the perfect time to get your fill of fresh fruits. Rather than blending together a smoothie, why not indulge in a fresh, delicious and visually stunning acai bowl? You can visit one of Jacksonville’s natural food establishments, like JuiceBox, for a bowl made to order, or go ahead and stock up on ingredients to make your own at home. Start by using a blender to mix up acai powder or frozen acai berry packet with your choice of base (soy milk, almond milk, banana, spinach or kale). When your mixture has thickened, transfer to a chilled bowl and get creative! Top with sliced strawberries, bananas or kiwi. Toss on some blueberries or raspberries. Add shredded coconut, chia seeds, cacao nibs or goji berries. Finish it off with a drizzle of nut butter and enjoy the nutritious snack! 20

HEALTH SPOTLIGHT

Dr. Craig Hossenlopp MyEyeDr.

BUZZ:What inspired you to go

into optometry? DOC: Doing my undergraduate degree, I was very influenced by my own family optometrist. He saw everyone in my family and had been my optometrist since I was 5 years old. Calling all women! Do you ever feel bloated after you eat or drink? You are not alone! Depending on your current lifestyle and eating habits, you could be expanding your stomach region by 6 inches over the course of your day. Follow these tips to minimize the bloat and maximize your confidence. Salt. Salt shakers, frozen/processed meals, salt-based seasonings and fast foods are loaded in sodium. When you take in a large amount of sodium, you will temporarily retain water, causing you to gain 2-4 pounds of water weight! Skip the salt shaker and try to keep your sodium intake to 1500-2300 mg/day. Carbonated Drinks. Both diet and regular carbonated drinks will lead to bloat for the day. The fizz from the drinks will trap air in your stomach leading you to look puffy in the middle region. Replace your diet coke at lunch with water with lemon, lime or cucumber which both detoxify you further! Sugar Free Foods. Many people are sensitive to sugar alcohols found in artificially flavored food and drinks. It is recommended, for health purposes, to limit artificial sugars to 2-3 servings/day. For bloat purposes, limit artificial sugars to 0 servings/day. This includes sweet-n-low, Splenda, truvia, nutrasweet and Equal. Read food labels, anything ending in “–ol” may be a culprit (mannitol, sorbitol, xylitol, etc.) Gas Forming Foods. Although healthy, gas forming vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, onions and beans can blow up your intestines like a hot air balloon. Before hitting the beach, stick with veggies with less roughage. Air. When using a straw, chewing gum, or sucking on hard candy, we take in extra air. This air can become trapped in our stomach, leading to hiccups in some, stomach bloat in others!

BUZZ: How can we protect our eyes

Exercise program design motivates me. When I see something that can be done better, I would rather do it myself than complain about it.

from the constant devices we use? DOC: We are in the digital age and the devices are tiring the eye out. A good rule is 20-20-20 rule. Every 20 minutes look away at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

BUZZ: How should people take care of

their eyes living in Florida? DOC: In Florida, we are exposed to the sun a lot more. We need protection from that UV light. It’s exacerbated going into the water. People need to protect their eyes with sunglasses.

IN THE KNOW>> HOW TO SOOTHE SUNBURN 1. Take ibuprofen and drink coconut juice. Note that Tylenol won’t cut it. Motrin or another brand of ibuprofen is key. A glass of coconut juice will re-hydrate your parched system. 2. Soak a cloth in milk and ice. Ring it out so it isn’t drippy and place the cool towel on your skin. Milk does the trick when you eat something spicy and it works topically too! Hopefully you’ve escaped the summer without burning. Since there’s still plenty of beach weather left, here are three ways to relieve sunburn pain that you may not have heard.

Preston Schulz

3. Open a microwavable packet of oatmeal, add a little water to form a paste and a touch of honey. Smooth it on the skin and wash it off after 10 minutes with cool water.

BUZZ: What inspires you? PS: The spitefulness of not having a task done.

BUZZ: What are some of the services you offer?

PS: I offer more of a scientific side to personal

training. I took data I collected from fitness testing and mapped out an entire year’s worth of fitness for my clients. I provide digital pdfs for clients for a year to set work out goals, exercise testing and generated programs. I take all of my martial arts training from the past and apply it to this work out too. Clients are encouraged to take out emotional stress during a workout rather than on co-workers!

BUZZ: What are the benefits of your services? PS: Life coaching is designed to help you manage nutrition and mental stress level, helping make your body more durable and helping your body to cope with life. BUZZ: What is important to your clients?

PS: Happiness.

BUZZ: How do people hear about you? PS: Word of mouth. I also have multiple contracts with the Clay County School Board recruiting families and children.

Food Truck Foodies

DELISH KEBABS

by Shelton Buchanan

When you talk about Brazilian food, one’s mind usually goes toward the churrascaria (steakhouse) style where waiters dressed like gauchos wander around with skewers of amazing chargrilled meats, slicing off bits until you’re so full your friends have to get a flatbed dolly to pull you out of there. Ok, maybe that last part was just about me. Don’t judge. But when you’re in the mood for some Brazilian grub, a lot of us don’t have the space in either our wallets or waistlines nor the time over our lunch breaks to go sit down down and enjoy such an indulgent meal. Enter the Delish Kebabs food truck: They’re bringing some of those same amazing Brazilian-style meats to the masses without the high price or time investment of a traditional churrasco meal.

First, a little disclosure: I’ve known the Delish Kebabs team for a few years now, and have been a fan since the very first day. They’re great people and even better cooks. Now that that’s out of the way, let’s talk about their food since that’s what you all came here to see anyway. DK offers up only a few kebab options, but what they may lack in variety (compared to a Brazilian steakhouse), they more than make up for with quality. Their baconwrapped chicken is my usual go-to because, well, there’s BACON, but the day I went I opted instead for their top sirloin and some Brazilian pork sausage with a side of fries doused with their homemade cilantro crema sauce. The steak was some of the most tender I’ve ever had, with that natural charcoal flavor deeply imbued inside. The pork sausage, which I’m fairly certain is linguiça, had an incredible snap from the casing paired with a succulent, juicy interior. Now you don’t have to dip your meat in the cilantro sauce, God knows it doesn’t need it, but it takes the meat to a whole new level of amazing. Oh, and go ahead and squeeze a little bit of lime on the meat because you know you want to. The fries are the perfect compliment to the meats with a crispy exterior and creamy interior, and when they drizzle the sauce over top of them it makes them even better. If you’re not up for the fries, they also offer a rice mix with peas & carrots with a little pico de gallo on the side. It’s tasty as well, but some days you just want the crunch of a fry. So if you’re out and about, and craving some of the tastiest carnivore options this side of Sao Paulo, make sure you give Delish Kebabs a try. Oh, and don’t ask them how hard it is to count to “Brazilian.” It’s a terrible joke and they’ll know you got it from me.

Two Thumbs Up How Good Food Should Taste Tijuana Flats

Article by Anna Heise

the facts

When: 11 AM – 10 PM Where: 13529 Beach Blvd #201b Contact: TijuanaFlats.com

Tijuana Flats is bringing the heat to their summer menu, with an assortment of new Street Tacos, Flautas and Tostadas. I was given a sneak peek and tasting before these items will be available to the public. These items will be available at all of the locations around town. Be sure to pair them with anything from Tijuana Flats’ extensive hot sauce bar. Pick your flavor and sit down to enjoy the colorful, muraled walls at every location of this hotspot. We can start with the “Street Tacos,” three unique options from mild to fiery; the Crispy Baja Fish combines crispy fish bites, chipotle cream, shaved cilantro cabbage and pineapple salsa. This taco was the mildest of the new entries and quite enjoyable. Next up the Lime Steak: grilled garlic-lime steak, avocado crema, shaved cilantro, cabbage, Pico de gallo and cotija cheese. Tangy and tender, I found this most enjoyable. The third taco, a Jerk Chicken filled with tender jerk chicken sprinkled with More Fire! Hot sauce, shaved cilantro cabbage, pineapple salsa and cotija cheese. The jerk spices add a different heat full of spices that left a pleasant warmth in the mouth. A Philly Cheesesteak Flauta with shaved sirloin steak, mozzarella cheese, rolled with grilled onions and peppers, and served with a side of queso dip was one my favorites. Tender slices of meat and tasty queso dip, what’s not to love. Last up and my absolute favorite, Banging Chicken® Tostadas, crispy corn tortillas with Smack My Ass Bangin Chicken® sauce, refried beans, cheddar-jack cheese, grilled onions and peppers, tomatoes and ranch dressing. If you are a heat lover, this is your dish. At first bite, I thought where is the heat? By the time I was ready for the next bite, it was there in the back of my throat - a sneak attack. Personal Chef

AL FUENTES

Town Hall

TownHallJax.com By Anna Heise

Chef de cuisine at Town Hall, Al Fuentes opened up about his culinary journey and revealed a chef so completely dedicated to his profession I never wanted the story to end.

Tell us about yourself. I originally started cooking while in high school and college to help support the family. I worked for corporate facilities that I was not too thrilled about, but it taught me about speed and efficiencies. I lost my passion for cooking and left for a while. Then I started waiting tables at a local restaurant, where I met the chef in charge and started cooking again. He showed me the artistic side of the job. He taught me how to care about the food I was serving. When he left, Chef Tom Gray asked me to stay on. I have been with him now for 12 years.

Where did you grow up? I grew up in California and Louisiana, mostly in Louisiana. My grandparents were French Canadian, and when I lived there, I would spend the school year in the inner city and spend the summers on the farm. What brought you to Jacksonville? I came to Jacksonville when I was in high school. My mom had a job opportunity. After graduation, I started college and had a chance to move back to California with my mom, but I stayed. I like this city. The culture between the beaches and downtown inspired me. How about your culinary training? No formal culinary training. When I started to work with Tom I thought I knew a lot, but quickly found out I was wrong. His world was more about detail, knife cuts and technique. It was challenging, but worth every moment. Tom encouraged me to work with other chefs as well, to help grow my skills and develop my style, and I took his advice.

get bogged down by putting parameters on things. My favorite thing to cook is the ones I don’t know how to cook. I like to take time each year and go to another city and see what is going on there. My goal is bringing it back to Jacksonville, staying up to date and fresh is important to me. So as far as my style, let’s just say melting pot American. Do you have a signature dish or a favorite dish you enjoy cooking? As stated, my favorite dishes to cook are something I don’t know how to do. I am big on Asian flavors because I have not had much exposure to them. I also like to cook with our pastry chef. Sugars and baking are my weak points. When people ask what’s my favorite dish at Town Hall, it would be the Roasted Chicken.

Who is your “ideal customer”? Probably the person I just can’t please. I tend to take over and make sure that they get everything they want. If you were being executed tomorrow, what would be your last meal? A simple turkey sandwich with avocado that my mom makes. I could eat this every day for the rest of my life. Are you affected by reviews at all? I love reviews. You get a lot of information from them. Everyone has their preference, so I don’t get my feelings hurt if they don’t like it.

How would you explain your style of cooking? I think my style is just fresh—that means cooking with the freshest ingredient available. I try not to 26

Ben Gamel

The Sharks captured the inaugural NAL Championship in July. Jacksonville dominated most of the season in the new arena league, but had to survive several turnovers in the championship game to win 27-21 over Columbus.

One of the surprise stories in Major League Baseball in the first half of the season is Jacksonville’s Ben Gamel. The Seattle Mariners slugger hit .323 in the first few months of the MLB season. Gamel was drafted by the Yankees back in 2010 and now has been given a chance to be an everyday player by Seattle.

Daniel Murphy

Ken Babby

The Jacksonville native continues to prove how talented of a hitter he is after making another All-Star appearance. The Washington Nationals second baseman was leading the National League in hitting at the All-Star break with a .342 average. Murphy singled in two at bats in the Midsummer Classic in Miami.

The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp owner recently was nominated as a finalist for the Entrepreneur of the Year National Award presented by Ernst and Young. Babby is the owner of the Jumbo Shrimp and Akron Rubberducks. The name change from Suns to Jumbo Shrimp has been a big success for Babby in the merchandise store and at the ticket office. MATCHBOX TWENTY & COUNTING CROWS STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Two of music’s most loved bands and biggest hit makers are joining up for an epic summer tour. Multi- platinum selling bands Matchbox Twenty and Counting Crows have announced “A Brief History of Everything Tour 2017” presented by Live Nation. “NORTH” is the title of Matchbox Twenty’s fourth album, the quartet’s first release in five years, its first set of all-new material in a decade, and, perhaps most rewarding, the first album to debut at No. 1 in the band’s highly decorated 17-year career. “No matter what I will ever do, nothing feels like home as much as playing these songs with these guys and it never will,” said Matchbox Twenty lead singer-songwriter Rob Thomas. “And I can’t wait to spend another summer out there on the road with the Crows.” Thomas previously teamed with Counting Crows for a hugely successful 2016 summer co-headline tour. “To be honest, we took a vote after last year and decided to spend every summer with Rob from now on,” said Counting Crows’ Adam Duritz. “Can. Not. Wait.” For more than two decades, Counting Crows have enchanted listeners worldwide with their intensely soulful and intricate take on timeless rock & roll. Now, on “Somewhere Under Wonderland” —their seventh studio album, the Bay Area-bred alt-rock band push into new terrain with a revamped songwriting approach that’s adventurous and visionary but still rooted in raw emotion.

LIFEHOUSE & SWITCHFOOT STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Switchfoot and Lifehouse announced that they will be embarking on a North American “Looking For Summer” Tour across the U.S. and Canada. Pop songstress Brynn Elliott will be supporting the entire tour. “We are amped to announce that we are going on tour with Lifehouse for the first time ever,” said Switchfoot co-founder and lead singer, Jon Foreman. “We’re calling it the ‘Looking for Summer’ Tour and we can’t wait to sing these songs with you.” It was in 2001 when the Los Angeles-based Lifehouse first broke through in a big way when “Hanging By A Moment,” from “No Name Face,” spent 20 weeks in the Top Ten and won a Billboard Music Award for “Hot 100 Single of the Year.” Since then, the band has released six more albums, three of which made the Billboard Top Ten, sold over 15 million records worldwide and spun off such hit singles as “You And Me,” and “Hurricane.” Lifehouse’s 7th album, “Out Of The Wasteland,” debuted at No. 1 on the independent album charts in 2015. Switchfoot released their tenth and latest album, “Where The Light Shines Through,” in July 2016 via Vanguard Records. The album was their first since 2014’s highly acclaimed, “Fading West.”. The album was self-produced in collaboration with John Fields, who helmed the multi-platinum breakthrough, “The Beautiful Letdown.”

Ponte Vedra Concert Hall

Peter White has maintained a reputation as one of the most versatile and prolific acoustic guitarists on the contemporary jazz landscape. Armed with an unparalleled combination of lyricism and energy, White combines elements of jazz, pop and classical. In addition to opening for artists like Linda Ronstadt, Billy Joel and Queen, White worked with Stewart in the studio in the making of “Year of the Cat,” which became a huge hit for Stewart in 1976. The tour and the album marked the beginning of a 20-year association with Stewart. Euge Groove – a pseudonym for saxophone journeyman Steve Grove – began playing piano in the second grade and turned to the saxophone at the age of 9 or 10. This demo soon landed him with Warner Bros. Records. “Euge Groove,” his debut album, was released in May 2000. After releasing multiple albums, Grove returned with his seventh studio effort, the fittingly titled “Seven Large,” followed with 2012’s “House of Groove” and 2014’s “Got 2 B Groovin’.”

CATCHIN' A BUZZ Interview by Anna Heise

MIXOLOGY

AMANDA REOS Mixologist

The Ryevolver

Empire City Gastropub

INGREDIENTS 2 oz. Redemption Rye 1/8 oz. vanilla maple infusion 1/2 oz. Averna This drink should be stirred, not shaken and served over a large ice block with orange zest inside and topped off with barrel aged cherry bitters. What is unique about your bar area? The fact that we are making craft cocktails from ingredients that are fresh and have a very creative element. My colleague, Coco Lopez, designed the menu, which brings in flavors that complement the weather here in Florida—refreshing, botanical cocktails. We also have the very spirit-forward cocktails. I believe we are bringing the cocktails that are found downtown or Riverside to this side of town. When is Happy Hour? Happy hour here is all day. No, it starts at 4 and then we have different happy happy hour specials the week all day. What kind of weekly drink specials do you offer? Each day has a unique drink. An example is Moscow Mule Monday, so every day is a different drink special. What is your best-selling drink? The Jax Mule made with Carve Vodka and Ginger Beer. Do you serve any local liquors or brews? All beers on tap are all made in Florida, plus we carry several Jacksonville brews. When we tap out, we do our best to bring in new beers. In addition, we serve the local Carve Vodka.

Do you have music or any events? Yes, Friday we offer live jazz and on Saturday at 9 p.m. we have karaoke. What compliments do you hear most often from your customers? People who try the new cocktails are always complimentary, and often say they are surprised at how good the drink tastes. When customers are having a great time at your business what are they doing? Drinking, eating, talking. We have a great bar crowd here with many regulars that visit three to four times a week. It’s a nice vibe here. Busiest night of the week? Friday. What does your staff enjoy the most about working here? They believe in what they are doing and embrace the concept. What do you want more people to know about your business? BEER BUZZED By Linda Johnson

Florida Theatre Serves Up Blues, Brews & BBQ August 24 It’s a winning recipe that’ll satisfy your senses, and you’ll be singing the brews all night long. On Thursday, Aug. 24, the Florida Theatre hosts its annual Blues, Brews & BBQ night which combines music, craft beer and barbecue dishes on both levels of the historic theatre. The fundraising event, once again presented by Publix Supermarket Charities, supports the

AUGUST HOROSCOPE

historic theatre’s mission of bringing celebrated arts and entertainment experiences to the community while preserving a historic landmark. The downtown Jacksonville venue has been a leading entertainment center since 1927, and it has hosted a number of different musical genres and entertainers over the years, to the tune of over 200 entertainment events annually. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. “Blues, Brews and BBQ 2017 will be bigger, better and meatier than ever before,” said Florida Theatre President Numa Saisselin in a statement. And, it’s all about local. Guests will enjoy Blues music by local artists Smokestack and The Snack

Blues on the theatre stage all evening. Against the smooth sounds of the Blues, attendees will also savor the flavors of barbecue from some of the best BBQ joints in the area: The Butt Hutt, Gilbert’s Social, Mojo BBQ , Monroe’s BBQ , 4 Rivers Smokehouse and The Bearded Pig. And, what goes better with barbecue-filled fingers than craft beer? Unlimited local craft beer samples will be provided by Bold City Brewery, Wicked Barley Brewing, Seven Bridges Grille & Brewery, Engine 15 Brewing Co. and Veterans United Craft Brewery. Visit FloridaTheatre.com for more information.

ARIES (March 21- April 19)

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22)

Looks like you may have a relationship hanging in the balance. Something about Saturn being in retrograde in Libra or something. Not sure. I am guessing it’s because you’re easily irritated or your lack of sensitivities towards others. Or maybe it’s because of Saturn. Your call.

After your mojo has been hibernating, it awakens this month with a furious curiosity. With your energy focused, it’s time you start meeting new singles as oppose to the usual, well, boring people you have been with.

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20) This one website stated you should open your problems up to your friends. I don’t know about your friends, but not everyone wants to hear about your problems. Mine would most likely make fun of me. Keep your issues to yourself and to professionals only.

For those Scorpio who have been looking for a soulmate, this may be your month. Your eighth house of intimacy is sharing with your coupling house. I don’t even understand that, but it translates to you can find a soulmate soon. Hooray soulmate!

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) With love planet Venus in retrograde this month you will be reevaluating your previous romantic choices. Sounds like a dumb concept. Why would you want to review relationships that failed? Venus can take a hike! Go find something new.

People you date this month will seem immature. May want to try and date some older people to mix it up. You never know, going to the earlier bird special and senior discounts could be fun. At the very least, you will save some money.

CANCER (June 22 – July 22) Things are becoming more official in your love life. That crush is now official on Facebook, a ring is about to be placed, or that test you took is a plus and not a minus. I hope it’s what you want otherwise those are some serious issues to face.

Work has been a plenty of late, so it’s time to loosen that tie and seek adventure outside of work. There are no planets in retrograde that affect you this month, so go nuts. Seek out one of the other signs who are all fired up and light a spark.

LEO (July 23 – August 22) Feisty and frisky this month. Friends will start becoming the type with “benefits” this month. Coupled Leos will start to spice things up. It’s a good month to be a Leo. VIRGO (August 23 – September 22)

This month could recycle an old drama and open an old emotional wound. Or even better, bring a shady, but fun ex back and fire up the ol’ spice in your life. Just remember there are reasons why you are no longer with that previous mate. Ex’s are no long-term solution.

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21)

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21)

CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19)

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18)

If you want that crush to notice you, you are going to have to come up with something creative. Let it all hang out this month and see if that garners attention. I am sure someone will notice you, if not the crush, which isn’t always a bad thing (unless it’s your boss).

PISCES (February 19 – March 20)

It should be a high energy month for you. If you can keep up with the pace, you should be able to find a few quality dates out of it. I know, I don’t believe it either Pisces. You’re not known for being good with hard work, yet I feel you can pull it off this month.
