FIRST COAST CONNECT with

MELISSA ROSS

the most interesting person i’ve interviewed this month

While he was attending a Bar Mitzvah celebration in June of 2017, Rabbi Nochum Kurinsky of Ponte Vedra Beach suddenly felt chest pains. Heading straight to the hospital, he could not help but think about his synagogue’s annual dinner just four days away, let alone the countless other activities he regularly involved himself in. The 37-year-old Kurinsky is a father of six and co-director of Chabad at the Beaches together with his wife Leah. Normally the rabbi serves the community. Now, he was the one in need of help. A doctor informed Kurinsky he was having an active heart attack and must be brought to the operating room for emergency surgery. Stepping out of the hospital a few days later, Kurinsky was advised to improve his health and incorporate a daily exercise regimen. “I decided to get fit by cycling,” he said. So just one year after that terrifying heart attack, Rabbi Nochum Kurinsky took his show on the road and embarked on a 600mile journey down Florida’s east coast 6

promoting not only physical health, but spiritual health as well. Joined by members of his synagogue and some friends from the community, the Rabbi originally set this goal as more of a motivator than anything else. He never expected to actually do it. Now that dream is a reality thanks to the help and support of his caring community. “We started at our synagogue, the most northeastern one in the state of Florida, and biked down Florida’s Atlantic coast all the way to the state’s southernmost synagogue in Key West,” he said. “While one might see physical health and spiritual health as unconnected, physical health assists one’s body to be a vessel to serve God and be a source of goodness to others.” Along the journey, Kurinsky and his partners shared the message of ‘Healthy Body, Healthy Soul’ by visiting several Jewish communities along the way and sharing their inspiring message with everyone they encounter. BUZZ ON VETERANS

with Jeff Shuford from Tech from Vets

Exclusive Interview with Navy Veteran Mario Poole, CPA “General quarters, general quarters! All hands man your battle stations!” This is the announcement made aboard a naval warship to signal that all hands aboard a ship must go to battle stations as quickly as possible. PREPAREDNESS. No stage is too big for Veterans. From day one, AP style of Boot Camp, the military began preparing us for combat. Nothing in the workforce is more daunting than combat. Risk taking, self-confidence, commitment, motivation, determination, time management and the allocation of resources are seen in both war and business. Education only teaches theory so when you combine that with real-life circumstances, what you have is an individual who is well prepared for entrepreneurship. Veteran-owned franchise businesses in the U.S. directly provide jobs for over 1 million Americans, and these businesses generate more than $50 billion in GDP. How do you transition from the service to the world of business? Make no mistake, transitioning from the military to civilian life and into business is no easy task. Before I was discharged, I took a class that helped veterans transition. They matched your military skills and translated them into civilian jobs. They helped with resume writing and interview skills. However, that was not enough. Today, there are organizations like Vets 22, which help Veterans transition by using an ecosystem approach through web & mobile applications. Think of it as the LinkedIn, Facebook and VA for Veterans rolled into one. Vets 22 provides a one-stop solution for veterans and their families to navigate the waters of a transitioning veteran. I am proud to serve as Executive Director. What inspired you to become a Vetrepreneur? I was born for this! All the skills I mentioned earlier prepared me for entrepreneurship. For inspiration and motivation, I draw upon my ancestors. Being of African & Scottish descent, I come from a long history of military veterans. It is in our blood. Furthermore, I currently have a son in the Army serving in Afghanistan.

Egotistical leading man, director and producer Fred Graham is reunited with his ex-wife when the two are forced to play opposite one another in a new production of Shakespeare’s Taming of the Shrew. The battle of the sexes continues onstage and off, as it becomes clear, that as much as this couple professes to hate each other, they are also still in love. Throw in a number of cases of mistaken identity, the mob, and comedic routines into the mix and you get a dazzling Broadway classic that earned the very first Tony award for Best Musical.

Using A Dark Place of Dreams exhibition for inspiration, guests will have the opportunity to create their own original assemblage artwork while enjoying a drink and appetizers from NOLA. Materials will be provided, but guests are encouraged to bring momentos and small items to be incorporated into the assemblages to create works of art that are personal and unique. ARTS UNLEASHED

Melodist Brynn MelodistBrynn.com

Melodist Brynn, singer/songwriter and composer, wrote her first song at 11 years old. As she moved throughout Latin America in her late teen years with her parents as a missionary kid, she wrote one song a day for three months straight at 18. Although she began her academic studies at Florida State College of Jacksonville concentrating in Sign Language Interpreting, she realized her passion for music was not easily pushed aside. Upon finishing her Associate of Arts degree, she was accepted to Jacksonville University in the Music Composition program as a vocalist. Brynn released her debut album, “Someone Like Me,” in September of 2017. Her music is a mix of the genres dearest to her: folk, blues, jazz, pop and slow rock. She was awarded the Delius Composition Award at JU in spring of 2018. Her music is featured on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify and various other sites.

Gia Davis Gia is an exfoliaton artisan. She combines various ingredients in an effort to create different levels of exfoliaton to gently remove layers of skin. Her painting style however, is the absolute opposite. She aggressively adds layer upon layer of color to express her visions in each painting. Gia combines techniques developed as an oil painter with those learned with acrylic to create works that reflect her current mood and mindset. A multimedia artist, Gia’s preferred subjects are flowers, fruit and the female form. Gia also spends creative time crafting shoes and handbags of various mediums that sometime serve as an alternative canvas for painting.

Two Thumbs Up How Good Food Should Taste

Five Points Tavern the facts

Where: 1521 Margaret St, Jacksonville, FL 32204 Price: $$ Contact: FivePointsTavern.com

In a city saturated with tacos and BBQ, it is time for something different. The Tavern now showcases a whole new menu featuring meatballs and burgers (affectionately Burgers n’ Balls) and at a much more accessible price point. “For the last two years we’ve been working really hard to produce our current menu in a small kitchen that was not designed for the type of prep we complete daily. While I love the dishes we are producing, it’s time to stop fighting against the space we have and embrace what it’s capable of,” said Executive Chef and co-owner, Jeffrey Forrest. “The new menu and atmosphere will be

better suited to the building’s original character, giving the customers a more approachable dining experience. We’ve decided to focus on burgers and meatballs and let this 100-year-old house be the casual dining spot it was meant to be. And while some customers are sad to see their favorite menu items disappear, the majority of responses all ended with the same statement: ‘As long as Jeffrey is cooking it, we’re coming back!’”

want, moving on to choose the sauce, the layout of the dish, and any side items they would like to accompany their meatballs. “It’s exciting that it’s so customizable, you can get it exactly how you want it. You can come 100 times and get something different every time,” said General Manager, Hannah Alexander. The Tavern will also keep it’s seasonally- inspired menu of vegetables and sides of the day, and of course, its famous lamb burger.

There will be something for everyone with glutenfree, vegan/vegetarian and kid’s options. With the new two-sided menu, guests will use dry erase markers to indicate the type of meatball they

Prices on the new menu range from $3-14. And, while they will be keeping their wonderful wine and cocktail program, guests can expect lower pricing for beer and liquor.

Berndt Ends BBQ My friend Shaine Berndt, food truck owner of Berndt Ends BBQ, recently opened a land based location in the San Jose area. I was quite pleased to be invited and took advantage to eat as much BBQ as possible. Food was served buffet style so not too many pretty pictures to share, but with Shaine and his BBQ, it’s more about how it tastes than how good the photo is. I have eaten at the truck on many occasions and am happy to tell you that everything you may have heard about the taste and quality has transferred nicely to the new location. The setup is quite simple: table service, open kitchen, picnic tables and high top tables plus lots of local beer on tap. It’s as casual as it gets and that’s the way I like my BBQ.

1602 Walnut Street, Jacksonville, FL Facebook.com/BleuChocolatCafe Take a journey with the Bleu Chocolat Cafe to taste the “bean to bar” chocolate of the Caribbean. Here you will discover flavors as vivid as the blues of our sea from Chef Cline.

Here are a few of the items we sampled during the opening event: An entire pig roasted and chopped into succulent bite-sized pieces, an assortment of ribs and homemade spicy sausage filled a tray large enough to feed a small village–and Shaine kept it full! Any BBQ worth its salt must have chicken. Smokey moist breast, legs and thighs satisfied that requirement. And of course, pounds of sweet coleslaw to balance everything out. Be aware there are NO French fries!!!! As Shaine shared with me, “we did not have them on the truck, and we will not be serving them in the restaurant.” The Crack Mac is much better, and you can’t get it anywhere in town as good. If you love good, locally owned and sourced BBQ then support your neighbor– it feeds the community!

THE THEOFFSPRING OFFSPRING

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

90’s punk icons, the Offspring, have challenged the status quo of the music industry since their formation. Known for stunts such as selling T-shirts with Napster’s famed logo on the band’s website, then defending their actions, claiming they were simply “sharing” the logo with fans. The Offspring entertain their fans with their tongue and cheek humor as well their archetypal punk sound. The Band formed following a riot at a 1984 Social Distortion show when high school buddies Dexter and Greg K decided to start playing together in Garden Grove, California. The Offspring are Dexter Holland (vocals, guitar), Noodles (guitar), Greg K (bass) and Pete Parada (drums). The Offspring have now put out eight records, performed over 1,000 shows across the globe and are known for their many hits including “Self Esteem,” “Come Out And Play (Keep ‘Em Separated),” “The Kids Aren’t Alright,” “Hammerhead” and “You’re Gonna Go Far, Kid.”

CATCHIN' A BUZZ Interview by Anna Eatz Jax

There are times when I find myself in a bar that brings back memories of a time when I had a hangout place; now that I call Jacksonville home I have discovered that place again. Crispy’s Springfield Gallery in the Springfield area of Jacksonville has been remodeled into a beautiful space, complete with a wooden bar and an upstairs loft for big parties. Always full with neighborhood regulars that welcome all comers and a bartender that, just by looking at him, you know he will listen and keep it all secret. Bartender Calley prague took some time to sit down with me to share some insight into his world and life at Crispy’s.

How long have you been tending bar?

My first bartending job was in 1995 at Orlando Arena, but to try and put a number on it I would have to say ten years behind the bar.

What do you enjoy most about Crispy’s?

It’s nice to work in a non-corporate atmosphere; to be able to free pour, or over pour and to have an owner who bartended for years and understand that’s

ON TAP

One of the tastiest events to headline around the city, you’ll be singin’ the Blues, Brews and BBQ upstairs and downstairs at the historic theatre with the body-swaying sounds of blues music on the stage, while your taste buds delight in the revelry provided by the tantalizing barbecue, complemented by an assortment of craft beer. Presented by Publix Supermarket Charities, a number of local favorites will once again serve unlimited samples of barbecue and beers, while the sounds of live continuous music by The Snacks Blues Band and Beale Street fill the air. “There is a natural alliance between the Florida Theatre, one of our city’s premier arts institutions, and the best craft professionals working in our city’s culinary arts’ community,” said Numa Saisselin, Florida Theatre President. “For $50, you get all the local craft beer you can drink and AUGUST 2018

Crispy’s Springfield Gallery how you build clientele. He is very supportive of the staff, friendly with all the patrons and works behind the bar from time to time. People come from all over town just because it’s his place.

What were you going for when you created the cocktail list? What are your favorites?

Actually we do not have a cocktail list. We’re bartenders, we will figure out a cocktail for you, especially for you. When you have been in the business as long as most of us have, it’s not difficult to find out what someone likes to drink, it’s easy. If you’re a vodka drinker give me a flavor and I will make any style of Martini you want.

What do you think sets your drinks apart from the others?

You can come in here and get exactly the drink you want. If you want a splash you’re going to get just a splash; our drinks are custom made for each customer. We get to know our people, what they like and we pour accordingly.

If I asked you to make me a cocktail with no limitations, what pops into your head?

French 76 • 1/2 oz. Vodka • 1/2 oz. St Germaine (elderflower liqueur) • Two wedges of squeezed lemon • 1/2 oz. to 1/4 oz. simple syrup (depends on sweetness preferred) • Champagne Shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a chilled martini or champagne flute, top with champagne, garnish with lemon twist or wedge.

Well you stated you like vodka so that it would be a French 76.

Sampling stations are located on the main and mezzanine floors. The barbecue, sponsored by KPMG, will feature lip-smacking creations by: Gilbert’s Social, Mojo Urban BBQ, Whiskey Kitchen No. 4, Monroe’s Smokehouse, Wicked Barley Brewing Company, Atlantic Beach BBQ and Bono’s BBQ. AUGUST HOROSCOPE

by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

ARIES (MARCH 21- APRIL 19) Oh, don’t go there this month Aries. You are quite into yourself this month, which is not a good thing. Huge egos are like huge rear-ends. Both are created by you and liked by no one.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 22) Tip those scales Libra. Instead of sulking and feeling sorry for yourself, why don’t you go out and make someone’s day. Try cheering someone else up or showing them a good time. You might find yourself feeling good and having fun also.

TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20) Read this on the competition’s site about your sign, “Stay home with your sweetie cuddling in a hammock.” Apparently all Taurus in relationships have hammocks. I didn’t know that. Weird. What about single Taurus, you also got hammocks?

SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 – NOVEMBER 21) If you think your mate hasn’t notice your wondering eyes the past few months, you’re wrong. And if you keep it up, you may be hanging out with Leo in Dumpsville. Not something you really want with all their issues combined with yours.

GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 21) With Mars in Gemini, your first house of self (obviously), you are turning quite a few heads this month. Whether single, committed, or somewhere in between, you need to get yourself out in the masses and see what fun you can stir up. CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 22) The sweet bliss of romancing… yourself. There are several planets in Cancer and that is making you fall in love all over again with little ol’ you. Self indulge this month. You’ll thank me for the stress free feeling of self pleasure. LEO (JULY 23 – AUGUST 22) This month you may start getting curious how your mate has stuck with you and all your issues. Well, expect them to jump ship soon. Either straighten up or keep what your doing and board the train to Dumpsville. Population… you. VIRGO (AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 22) I checked my Magic 8 Ball. At first I though it stated, “Check back later.” But actually it said that your online profile picture looks like crap and it’s time that you have one up-to-date from at least within the last four years.

SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 – DECEMBER 21) You thought your last clever saying was so cool or funny, yet you should take notice people aren’t laughing or smiling. Maybe you shouldn’t try so hard to fit in or impress people. This month don’t exactly lay low, but just don’t be so Nicolas Cage. CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 – JANUARY 19) ‘The early bird gets the worm’ should be your motto this month. If you are looking to get your flirt on with someone, you need to get in there early before someone with a little more experience or better looks beats you to him or her. Not rude. Just honest. AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 – FEBRUARY 18) Mars is in your fifth house of passion this month. So let’s go mix and match Aquarius. Some of your old partners may be rekindling flames, and there are new people just waiting to meet you. This is a hot month for you. Stoke that fire and see what mistakes you can make. PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20) Again, get off your butt and just ask them out. Quit being so iffy and making excuses. People could actually like you back, but you won’t know until you get the gusto to find out. So, go get on the dance floor and start stalking. I mean talking.
