The Most Interesting Person I’ve Interviewed This Month

VIM-Jax.org

If you haven’t heard of Courtney Lewis yet, well where have you been, exactly?

COURTNEY LEWIS

Volunteers in Medicine

Volunteers in Medicine Jacksonville is a free healthcare clinic serving the working uninsured with primary and specialty medical care. Since opening in 2003, we have provided over 60,000 free appointments to people who earn their own living and yet still cannot afford the cost of healthcare on their own. Patients receive office visits, lab work, and many medications at no cost. In addition to basic primary care, we provide lung function testing, eye exams, prescription eyeglasses, nutritional counseling, weight loss counseling and diabetes education. Medical and administrative services are provided by a cadre of over 200 dedicated, professional volunteers who give of their time to improve the health of the greater Jacksonville community.

First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross

Lewis is the young, charismatic, insanely talented new music director of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. At the ripe old age of 30, the Belfast, Ireland, native was chosen among a slew of talented contenders from around the country to replace the outgoing Fabio Mechetti as conductor with our local symphony.

With stints at the New York Philharmonic and Boston’s Discovery Ensemble already under his belt, Lewis, who was educated at Cambridge, is perfectly poised to lead the symphony forward – and attract younger fans to the genre.

“We’ve got to inspire a new generation to love classical music,” says Lewis, who is sure to bring a Millenial Generation approach to a very traditional sphere.

Volunteers in Medicine Jacksonville is open Tuesday through Saturday for clinical appointments, nursing appointments, blood pressure checks, and prescription pickup. We qualify new patients twice per week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, after a preliminary phone screening. Volunteers in Medicine Jacksonville is a non-profit, receives no federal or state funding, and operates with financial support from corporations, foundations and individuals.

North Florida Council Boy Scouts of America NFCScouting.org The North Florida Council, Boy Scouts of America’s mission is to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices in their lifetimes by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath & Law.

His recent debut drew record crowds to the Times-Union Center. Keep the positive momentum going and learn more at www.JaxSymphony.org!

The North Florida Council encompasses 17 counties in the northeast Florida area with almost 6,500 volunteers and serves over 50,000 youth in over 850 units.

Feeding Northeast Florida FeedingNEFL.org Feeding Northeast Florida is the new community-driven food bank created to serve those who lack the “First Need” of us all – a consistent and nutritious supply of food. Feeding Northeast Florida is affiliated with Feeding America, an organization at the forefront of solving the crisis of food insecurity across our nation.

LEADERSHIP JAX

An interview with a leader in the Jacksonville Community

DR. LARRY FOX

Pediatric Endocrinologist, Nemours - Medical Director, NE Florida - Pediatric Diabetes Center

This is a brand new food bank and a whole different business model called “Fast, Fresh & Free”. The network of member food pantries and community agencies are deeply rooted in neighborhoods across the area to get food to those who need it most. On a daily basis volunteers play a key role in doing the work of a food bank. Feeding Northeast Florida needs people to make phone calls, sort and package food and much more. The work they do in the community is critical to thousands of hungry families, elderly and children. Your time is precious to you, but your time invested on behalf of a hungry child is priceless. Go to their web site to learn more and sign up to help!

BROUGHT TO YOU BY

BUZZ: Was it always your goal to become an endocrinologist? Tell us about your journey. Dr. Fox: Early in medical school I was fascinated with the physiology of the endocrine system. Later on during medical school I was able to see several patients with a variety of endocrine (hormone) disorders and became even more interested in this field and in being an endocrinologist. During my pediatric residency (in Phoenix, AZ) this interest was enhanced by the many different endocrine disorders I encountered in children and adolescents, including diabetes. I knew soon after starting residency that I wanted to be a pediatric endocrinologist. I went on to complete my training at UCLA in their pediatric endocrinology fellowship training program. BUZZ: You were one of the leaders recognized at the Legacy of Leaders dinner and in the Portrait of Leadership Gallery that was held at Ocean 60. What does being a leader mean to you? Dr. Fox: I am very honored to be considered a leader in this community. Being a leader means a number of things to me. First, it means being not just a part of the community but also doing what you can to support the community and those around you. It also means being an excellent role model for my children and for all of my patients. It is important to instill inspiration in our children. Being a leader helps them become future leaders. BUZZ: What advice would you leave future leaders? Dr. Fox: The future leaders of our world are our children and our children’s children. I hope to encourage others to work hard but still enjoy what life has to offer. Our future leaders need to recognize the importance of family and community.

THE ARTS

Arts Unleashed

Be On The Look Out For Donald Copper Head Maxey

I’m a native of Jacksonville, Florida, and a Journeyman Metal Worker with 30 years’ experience in my craft. About 18 years ago I started making the eight-pointed copper star that has become my signature. From that, the artwork has expanded to the many things you will see displayed around town, on the website and many more pieces I have given to my family and friends. Some of my most notable pieces are the award-winning birdhouses and the game fish. There is no limit to what can be done with copper and I’m always open to suggestions. Working small pieces on site when I’m at a show lets people see how I work the metal into something special. I hope that everyone continues to enjoy my artwork as much as I enjoy making it. Take a moment and visit my web site at CopperHeadMetalArts.com.”

Be On The Look Out For Winter Broadhurst

W

inter Broadhurst is a local artist who strives to have an impact on the world through her art. Winter participated in the Awareness with Art (AWA) program to support the Inn Ministry (InnMinistry.org), which is a home away for expecting mothers who are homeless and or in a dangerous situation. Some of the proceeds from her auctioned artwork from AWA went to the Inn Ministry. A student at FSCJ, Winter has received the honor of being on the President’s List twice. Right now she is working towards her Associate in Arts degree. Eventually Winter wants the opportunity to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Converged Communications, so she can work in the non-profit field. Winter’s goal is to be able to use her art and writing gifts aiding non-profits in their important work. Winter Broadhurst has a piece of artwork currently on display at Florida State College, Kent Campus.

Players By The Sea Players by the Sea presents history that sizzles!

“Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde” Unfolding on the Studio Stage January 9 – 24, Players by the Sea presents the fascinating and confounding story of Oscar Wilde’s flamboyant swath through English literature, high society and low life. At the height of his success in 1895, with two of his most brilliant comedies (“An Ideal Husband” and “The Importance of Being Earnest”) reigning in London’s West End, Wilde brought a court action for libel against a brutish aristocrat, the Marquess of Queensberry. It led to his downfall, imprisonment, and death in disgrace and exile. Was Wilde willfully self-destructive? Or pitifully delusional and blinded by love? A martyr to repressive Victorian hypocrisy? Or the victim of his own egotism and arrogance? Perhaps all of the above? Moises Kaufman’s riveting docu-drama “Gross Indecency: The Three Trials of Oscar Wilde” explores this fateful tale in words drawn directly from the court records, newspaper accounts of the time and eye-witness memoirs. Debuting Off-Off-Broadway in 1997 (featuring Jacksonville actor Michael Emerson in the lead role), the show created a sensation and subsequently moved OffBroadway to great acclaim.

Theatre

Theater in the River City By Tamara McClaran, Northeast Florida Theater Enthusiast “Miracle On 34th Street The Musical” At Limelight Theatre The musical based on one of the most popular Christmas films of all time, “Miracle on 34th Street,” is this season’s holiday show at the Limelight Theatre in St. Augustine. The musical has a book, music and lyrics by Meredith Wilson, best known for writing and composing “The Music Man.” The heartwarming story of “Miracle on 34th Street” reminds us that the holiday season is the perfect time to share love, believe in miracles and bask in the magic of life. Shelli Long is directing.

“It’s an old school musical with a story that pulls on people’s heartstrings,” Long said. The musical tells the story of Susan, a young girl who dreams of a father and brother to make her family whole, and Kris Kringle, a kind man who claims he is the real Santa Claus. When employed as a Santa at Macy’s, he quickly spreads a wave of love across New York City. But can he help make Susan’s dreams come true? McKenna Hazel

“The musical’s message is you’re never too old to believe,” said Long. Long has assembled a full orchestra and a 20-member cast which includes six children. Two young actors, Gracia Romaine and McKenna Hazel, are double cast for the role of Susan. The musical is filled with humor, spectacle and beloved songs like “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas.”

“It’s a holiday classic and an entertaining family friendly show,” Long said.

FIRST COAST NO MORE HOMELESS PETS The mission of First Coast No More Homeless Pets (FCNMHP) is to end the killing of dogs and cats in shelters in our community, northeast Florida and the nation. As a nonprofit that collaborates closely with the entire community, we strive to dramatically improve the welfare of animals and promote the valuable bond between humans and their pets. Our work is humane, purposeful and comprehensive. In the United States, approximately 3.5 million pets are euthanized every year. While euthanasia can alleviate suffering in some cases, healthy pets make up the majority of these figures. Our combination of aggressive spay/neuter efforts, adoption initiatives and pet retention programs have resulted in significant improvements for animals. THE EUTHANASIA RATE IN JACKSONVILLE HAS DECREASED BY AN ASTOUNDING 90% SINCE OUR INCEPTION IN 2002. Reducing euthanasia improves the quality of life for all residents in our community. FCNMHP provides comprehensive services designed to reduce overpopulation. We believe that the death of even one healthy pet is a prompt call for action. The approach of FCNMHP is to carefully look at data from the city shelter (Jacksonville Animal Care & Protective Services) and determine the origin of surrendered pets, as well as the types of pets least likely to leave the shelter alive. Armed with this information, we target our efforts. For example, we offer free and low-cost spay/neuter services for dogs and cats and focus on zip code areas with high pet surrender rates. This past fiscal year we performed 31,125 spay and neuter surgeries—with 180,000+ since 2002! Pairing homeless pets with new families is a big part of our lifesaving work. FCNMHP plans and implements large-scale adoption events. Our MEGA ADOPTION events are the largest of their kind in the nation, finding homes for up to 1,000 dogs and cats per event and attracting up to 8,000+ individuals looking to adopt a pet. AS OF NOVEMBER 2014, THROUGH OUR MEGA ADOPTION EVENTS, WE HAVE HELPED PLACE 7,232 DOGS AND CATS IN NEW HOMES. We invite several shelters and rescues from northeast Florida to adopt their homeless pets, providing much of the transportation, crate set-up and a team of staff and volunteers to run the logistics during these weekend long events. In addition, we assist other communities to plan similar events, saving thousands of dogs and cats from potential euthanasia nationwide. Without all of these vital services and the collaboration between our partner groups, the community risks returning to the way things were before we started - when more than 23,000+ pets were euthanized each year in Jacksonville. Invest today in our life-saving programs so that together we can reach a day when there are truly no more homeless pets!

WHY IS THIS CAUSE CLOSE TO YOUR HEART? I got involved seven years ago as Chairman of the Jacksonville Waterways Commission when we heard a presentation about JHNSA’s proposal to bring the ship to Jacksonville and their request for docking space on the Southbank Riverwalk. While I haven’t personally served in the military, several of my family members have and still do. This would be a wonderful tribute to all of the Jacksonville residents that currently serve or have served in our armed forces in the cause of protecting our country. It can also serve as a great education tool for our young people to help them learn about the values, importance, and traditions of our armed forces. There is nothing like it in the entire state of Florida and the closest similar museums are in Mobile, Alabama and Charleston, South Carolina.

“First Coast Connect” Host, WJCT WHAT IS THE MISSION OF HEAL FOUNDATION?

HEAL serves individuals and families living with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The Foundation serves as an outreach organization providing educational programs and camps tailored to the needs of our Autism Community. Over the past five years, HEAL is proud to have awarded more than one million dollars to provide: • Grants to support camps, education, and community programs • Classroom enhancements for local schools such as iPads • Educational seminars for parents, teachers and therapists • Fun recreational and social events for families

WHY IS THIS CAUSE CLOSE TO YOUR HEART?

I have several relatives on the autism spectrum in my immediate and extended family and several friends with children on the spectrum. There are so many challenges to raising a child with autism and I’m happy to lend support to HEAL as a new board member, because they step in for families facing enormous stress and provide a number of invaluable support services.

James Luther Bevel, was a top lieutenant of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The week I relocated to Jacksonville, the Human Rights Ordinance failed by one vote. I was in that standing-room only council meeting and was deeply impacted by the sobs and cheers from opposing members of our community. I wondered what I might do to help create a more just community, raise awareness and promote equality for all. A few months later, I founded and co-created, We Are Straight Allies.

The mission of Nourishment Network is to distribute food and grocery products to hungry people and to educate the public about the causes and possible solutions to problems of domestic hunger. WHY IS THIS CAUSE CLOSE TO YOUR HEART? I see the work they do and the amount of hungry people they feed. One dollar donated to Nourishment Network generates seven meals, or the equivalent of two days of food for a person in need. By establishing relationships with large food suppliers like ConAgra and retail partners like Wal-Mart, WinnDixie, Publix, BJs and Target, Nourishment Network is able to rescue an enormous volume of food and stretch each dollar incredibly far.

To end the killing of dogs and cats in shelters in our community, northeast Florida and the nation. FCNMHP combines aggressive spay and neuter efforts, adoption initiatives and pet retention programs that have resulted in significant improvements for animals. WHY IS THIS CAUSE CLOSE TO YOUR HEART? I grew up in Indiana with rescue dogs, cats, horses and all sorts of other critters I would find and then help. Giving back was a way of life and I was always surrounded by my pets and helping at local shelters. Having worked now for the for-profit and non-profit sector, it’s great to be able to focus on animal welfare full-time. Family Traditions… WJCT WJCT Knows A Lot About That! By Robin Warren, WJCT Education Outreach Coordinator

Want more family joy and deeper meaning this holiday season? It’s possible! The key is simplifying focus on what matters. Parents often lose themselves amid the chaos of preparing for the holidays. All too often, the stress can stay with you long after guests leave and the last new toy is put away. If you tend to equate the holidays with cursing traffic at the mall, why not take a new approach this year? Here are some

things you can do to create meaningful traditions your children will appreciate more than any stocking stuffer. * Manage expectations. At the beginning of December, sit down with each child for a special hot chocolate date. Ask them to tell you three desires: *One present for them that is within your means. *One “together” present that you will do with them, like take them to the zoo. *One “giving” present that your child will feel good about making to give to someone else. * Start a Christmas Eve tradition. Break out your favorite holiday stories and start

see, this fantastic little spot caters to my favorite culinary anomaly: breakfast served all day! In my mind, all restaurants should serve breakfast for breakfast, lunch and dinner. But alas, I just can’t seem to get the likes of restaurants such as Orsay, Mathews or Moxie to understand. There is something enchanting about eating traditional early morning fare past the designated wormcatching hour. So it was to my delight to be able to grab the Bayard Big Boy (breakfast feast for champions as I have so aptly named it) at midafternoon on Wednesday! This well-endowed eating endeavor included 3 eggs, thick, crispy, bacon with selection of house-made home fries or grits, and a large homemade waffle. Quiche Alsacienne

(a version of the Quiche Lorraine)

BUZZ: What cuisines influence your style of cooking? CBD: French; however, I feel more of a connection with traditional French classic cuisine – the old school.

BUZZ: What is your most memorable kitchen experience? CBD: Learning under the direction of my uncle, my chef hero. I interned at La Lorraine in Paris where my Uncle Jean-Pierre Morton was Executive Chef. His career spanned there for 40 years. This upscale restaurant would serve up to 1,000 people in a day. There were several stations (i.e., sauce station, seafood, vegetable, grill, garde-manger, or cold food station). I learned all of them. Everything was prepared from scratch.

DIRECTIONS Sautee bacon and onions in a little bit of oil. Set aside. Beat together eggs, heavy cream, half-n-half and salt. Place bacon and onion mix at the bottom of the pie. Add shredded gruyere. Pour egg mixture over. Bake in preheated oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for about 40 – 50 minutes until the custard is golden, puffed and set, yet still slightly wiggly in the center. Cool for about 15 minutes before serving.

The Salvation Army Angel Tree Project

he Salvation Army’s annual Angel Tree project benefits more than 13,300 children in Northeast Florida each holiday season. The project gets underway in October, with an application process that each family must undergo to be deemed eligible for The Salvation Army’s holiday programs of assistance, including Angel Tree.*

Once a family’s eligibility is confirmed, each child (up to age 12) in that family will be represented by a paper angel that will be placed on decorated trees in various public places from mid-November through early December. Each Angel tag will bear a child’s first name, age, gender, clothing and shoe sizes, one or two “wishes” expressed by the child, and a special code used for sorting and distributing the gifts. To participate as an Angel Tree donor, a person will select one or more of the Angel tags from a tree, and they will receive an “Angel bag” and instructions at that time. They will then purchase gifts for the child or children whose tags they have chosen. Although it is the shopper’s sole discretion what or how much they give, we do ask that a minimum of one new toy and a full outfit of clothing be secured in the bag before returning. The vast majority of participants give significantly more. The filled, properly-labeled Angel bags are returned (no later than December 11th) to one of many official Angel Tree locations, where they will be kept securely until picked up by Salvation Army personnel. The filled bags are then sorted and placed on a gigantic grid, by family, for distribution a few days before Christmas. Parents come to pick up the bags of gifts from our Toy Shop by appointment, but we discourage them from bringing their children with them. It’s our desire that the parents take the gifts home and wrap them (donors and The Salvation Army even provide the wrapping paper) and give them to the children for Christmas. Doing so will preserve some dignity for the parents and the children will not need to know that The Salvation Army had anything to do with their “Merry Christmas”. More frequently than we like to acknowledge, Angel tags representing these real boys and girls end up unclaimed on the tree, forgotten on a desk or in a purse, or for some other reason do not result in gifts for those children. Some of the bags we receive are poorly-filled or contain used items. These situations account for at least 10% of the children in the project. To provide gifts for the unreturned tags, or to add to bags

that are inadequately filled, we seek donations for “Forgotten Angels.” We do what we can to gather additional, undesignated gifts to distribute to those families. We particularly need assistance with new clothing and new shoes for “Forgotten Angels,” although toys are needed as well. Distribution Day in Duval County is by appointment Tuesday December 16 from 9 am – 4 pm. Distribution takes place in a donated space at Regency Square Mall. The Toy Shop is located on the Atlantic Boulevard side of Regency next to Sears. The families who benefit from our Angel Tree project also receive a Thanksgiving food basket in November, as well as filled children’s stockings for the children (12 and under) on Toy Shop day. * The Salvation Army has a strong commitment to responsible stewardship of donated funds and material goods, so each family is screened to assess their true needs. We believe this sends a positive message to the community, assuring them that the toys and clothing donated to the Angel Tree project are going to families that likely would not otherwise be able to provide Christmas gifts for their children.

About the Salvation Army of Northeast Florida: The Salvation Army was founded in London, England, in 1865 to help the poor, the homeless, the hungry, and the destitute. The organization expanded into the United States, and was established in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1891. Throughout the years, services expanded from Duval County to also include St. Johns, Clay, Nassau, Baker and Putnam Counties. The Salvation Army of Northeast Florida today provides a wide variety of services to those in the greatest need. Our services include food and shelter for the homeless in Jacksonville; social services and food pantry services to prevent homelessness in all six counties; mobile feeding units to reach remote families and shut-in individuals in need; disaster services; childcare services for homeless and low-income families; alcohol rehabilitation services; youth programs; holiday assistance; and spiritual services. We provide services to over 350,000 in the Northeast Florida area each year. MARCUS ANDERSON -MarcusAnderson.net

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

A son of South Carolina, Anderson was introduced to jazz by his father at a young age, and was always a passionate student of music and the arts. The youngest of seven, Anderson grew up performing and singing in church with his older brothers. Anderson’s family recognized his talent as a musical prodigy when he was introduced to the saxophone at age twelve. He later became a member of the All-State High School Jazz Ensemble for South Carolina. After graduation, Anderson studied jazz at North Carolina Central University. There he was a member of the program’s world renowned Jazz Ensemble directed by Dr. Ira Wiggins. He studied with Branford Marsalis and Gospel saxophonist Donald Hayes for several years, achieving many accolades along the way. He received the Chancellor’s Award three years running and performed for Hilary Clinton and Jesse Jackson. Anderson was a member of the HBCU All-Star Jazz Ensemble as 1st Tenor Sax for three successive years. The pop/R&B and jazz musician’s career is fast becoming one to watch. Marcus Anderson is currently performing to audiences all over the world as one of Prince’s saxophonists in New Power Generation. As part of New Power Generation, Anderson has played and been showcased in such iconic festivals such as the Essence Music Festival, Monteux Jazz Festival and the Curacao North Sea Jazz Festival. Watching Marcus Anderson perform is akin to no other live experience. The tremendous musicianship Anderson displays in-person is matched only by his energetic, charismatic and passionate showmanship. Heavily influenced by artists such as Michael Jackson, James Brown and Prince, Anderson’s magnetic stage persona and tremendous enjoyment of performing is undeniable. Anderson makes the stage his musical playground and the stage becomes the setting for where “style meets substance.”

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Swamp Radio’s mission is to provide a live radio show experience that celebrates the culture, art, and history of Northeast Florida through a mixture of stories, interviews and music. “Holiday traditions are rooted in the notion of place. Here in Jacksonville, there exists a set of unique experiences exclusive to this region that provide many of us with some wonderful holiday memories,” states Ian Mairs, the show’s host and creator. “For me, the weather here allows for some distinctly Southern festivities in all sorts of outdoor locales like the beach or the river.” “A Swamp Radio Christmas” will give audiences an opportunity to connect with the past and celebrate the present, along with a glimpse into the future. Local writer Dorothy Ketchum Fletcher will wax nostalgic as she strolls through downtown Jacksonville of yesterday, stopping to gaze the windows at May Cohens, Furchgott’s, and Kuhn Flowers. In addition, former Florida Times-Union columnist Jennifer Greenhill Taylor will hilariously chronicle the great freeze of 1989, the only snow storm in recent Jacksonville history. Local breakout success Peter Behringer of Sweet Pete’s will discuss all things chocolate covered and sugary, as well as some distinctly Southern creations like Flip Flop Lollipops and Key Lime Taffy. A full cast of artist contributors are also scheduled, including special musical guests Four Families and Sam Pacetti. “Swamp Radio Christmas reminds me of my favorite kind of holiday treats: homemade,” adds Numa Sasselin, President of the Florida Theatre. “The show honors Jacksonville in the same way the Florida Theater provides our community with a wonderful place to gather and celebrate life in this neck of the woods.”

CORBITT BROTHERS

HUNTER HAYES

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

-CorbittBrothers.com

Raw, fierce, God-given talent to create and perform music is what best describes the Corbitt Brothers Band. “Simply put, the Corbitt Brothers jam! They have a killer, hard-driving, southern rock sound with a well-rounded sound of bluesy rock, gritty southern country, and a classic-flavored edge to great timeless tunes.” Genres include southern rock, outlaw country, blues, reggae, bluegrass and pretty much everything in between. Their original music comes from the heart and is relevant today. This diversity enables them to please any crowd. The band’s passion for playing music and entertaining is second to none. They engage a crowd with explosive energy, amazing talent and magnetism from the first song to the always requested encore. Another major bullet in their arsenal is Isaac Corbitt on the harmonica. He is one of the best harmonica artists in the country and has been compared to John Popper of Blues Traveler. When he lets it rip on the harmonica, crowds are electrified and on their feet in minutes cheering him on. These young, self-taught brothers/musicians were born and raised in Jacksonville, FL. They moved to the Nashville, Tennesee, area in 2008 to pursue their music dreams and formed the Corbitt Brothers Band in 2009 as a twosome hitting the music scene in Tennessee for a year. In mid-2010, they added a drummer to their band and went on the road full-time.

Listen closely to Hunter Hayes as he talks, that millionmile-an-hour voice, all rapid-fire energy and bustling passion. Not long ago he released his second album, the country chart-topping “Storyline.” But the 22-year-old, mind always churning, ideas jettisoning from brain to hand and voice, can’t help but wonder what lies ahead. “I’m on an unending search to find what it is that I love and how it is that I will do it,” he says of the wide-open, all-options future for a four-time GRAMMY nominee, CMA New Artist of the Year and youngest male act ever to top the Billboard Hot Country song chart. “How am I going to achieve getting the sounds that I love? What is it that I can’t resist?” The wonder of a talent like Hayes is that even when he has a rare moment of reprieve from the mayhem of touring the world on a solo jaunt, breaking the Guinness Book of World Records’ mark for most concerts in a 24-hour period or, say, performing at the GRAMMY Awards, he’s focused on his craft. “I should be fatigued of writing,” he admits. “But I have written easily a third of whatever my next project is. It’s more of a daily circle now,” he explains of his omnipresent muse. It’s easy to look at Hayes and marvel at his oft-recounted successes: receiving his first guitar from actor Robert Duvall at age six; performing for the President the following year; signing with Atlantic Nashville Records at age 18; touring as a support act for Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood not long after. “I just want people to know me,” Hayes says, taking a deep breath as he looks into the crystal ball he calls his unpredictable life. “Having someone care about what you’re saying is a groundbreaking feeling. That is a beautiful, life-changing experience every time. You don’t get used to that.”

The Jacksonville Jaguars have been patiently waiting for one of their 2014 draft picks and finally they get to see him play. Aaron Colvin was drafted in the 4th round by the Jags despite tearing his ACL at the Senior Bowl back in January. Colvin, a cornerback, was projected as a second round pick before the injury. The Jags coaching staff developed a good relationship with Colvin at the Senior Bowl.

Yolett McPhee-McCuin is in her second season at Jacksonville University Women’s basketball coach. Once again, Coach Yo will have a young team as she has brought in six freshman for this season. A year ago, McPhee-McCuin led the Lady Dolphins to a 13-17 overall record but more importantly a 10-8 mark in the Atlantic Sun, which was good enough to earn the 4th seed in the ASun Tourney.

De’andre Johnson

First Coast High School <Quarterback

The First Coast High School quarterback is bound for Florida State in 2015 and has already visited the high school record books. The Bucs senior had his team ranked tops in the state in the highest classification in the state. In the last regular season game of the year, Johnson broke the all time passing yards mark in Northeast Florida with over 10,600. Johnson broke John Wolford’s record.

Running for Brews It’s unbelievable how much truth is in that statement. Yes of course, I love running, and I will run for physical fitness, mental health, and various other reasons or why would I be a co-organizer for a weekly running group? But deep down, I REALLY like beer. Now that I’m in the “real world” and can splurge a little bit on a full flavored craft beer, I do. Life is too short for a bad beer. Don’t do it, it’s not worth it. Your taste buds deserve more. Furthermore, Jacksonville is home to so many awesome breweries. We, as a running group, are lucky enough to call one of those local breweries our home. The Green Room knows exactly how to quench your thirst after a group run. Besides the cold beer from their brewery and other local favorites, they don’t mind a large group of runners swarming their establishment. I’ll let you all imagine the scene. Now I can sit here and encourage you to drink this beer over that one and start listing all my favorites, but where’s the fun in that? Part of the excitement is walking into a local brewery, like the Green Room, and experimenting. Don’t worry, taste testing is encouraged. And here is a special treat: some beers are better mixed. So for me, I run because I love it, but also because I really like beer. And who can blame me? It’s a great reward for running!

EXPECTATIONS HAVE NEVER BEEN HIGHER FOR UNF BASKETBALL UNF Head Basketball Coach Matthew Driscoll

Photo courtesy Todd Drexler, Sideline Sports

In the 10 years since UNF moved to Division 1 in athletics, there have never been higher expectations for a season than head coach Matthew Driscoll finds for his Ospreys now. The BUZZ interviewed the high-energy UNF basketball coach about the upcoming Atlantic Sun conference season.

BUZZ: How are you handling these high expectations internally? MD: It’s our 10th anniversary of moving to Division 1. The expectations continue to grow and I think that’s healthy for your program. That makes people understand just how far you’ve come and how you have grown your culture. I think it’s something very positive. We’re always talking about “one game at a time” and staying humble and hungry. Every single game is the most important game on our schedule. One game at a time. BUZZ: In the past two NCAA tournaments, Atlantic Sun teams have won a total of three games. What does that mean for UNF? MD: There is a financial gain for every team in the conference. The exposure that it gives the league is big. The fact that we swept Mercer last year (a team that won in the NCAA Tournament), and we were the only team to beat them twice - we were getting calls for interviews and stories between the Duke and Tennessee games so that helps when we go out on the recruiting trail. BUZZ: Does the JU rivalry come in to play in your message to local talent? MD: No. We don’t talk about other schools when we recruit kids. We talk about what we do. We talk about the league and the power five teams we play. But we talk about UNF. BUZZ: How will you measure success this season? What would make a good year? MD: I don’t know where the measurement would be. A lot of things can transpire between now and March 8 when the championship game of the Atlantic Sun will be played. It’s hard to be a Punxsutawney Phil and prognosticate exactly what is going to transpire. However, with that said, our expectations are high. So therefore, if your expectations are high and you don’t quite reach those expectations, there is a chance for disappointment. Expectations lead to disappointment. HOW TO START THE NEW YEAR OFF RIGHT We’ve all said it a million times, “This is the year I’m going to lose weight and start exercising.” And we’ve all heard it a million times: you’ve got to eat less and move more. So why haven’t you started something and stuck with it to the end? Did you set your goals too lofty? Did you expect it to happen in a shorter time period? Or did you just hope something positive would happen without forming a game plan to achieve them?

desk for up to 8 hours a day ur yo at g tin sit u, yo of ny For ma (literally) to limit your time ps ste tra ex ke Ta le. ab vit is ine as well as at work. spent sitting outside of work Let’s try setting some small goals and focus on the little things- quiet time, happiness, diet, and movement. QUIET TIME: Make more downtime for yourself. We all must rest and recharge our battery, which has a limited “life”, or we will run out of energy- literally. There are 3 ways you can achieve more quiet time to refuel. Active rest, passive rest and total rest. Total rest is sleeping, passive rest is when your body is not actively involved in something, but you are consciously aware of it (meditation or reading a novel), active rest is a light activity such as tai chi. HAPPINESS: Identify your core values. Think about your family, friends, work, and health. How do you value each of these? Where and on what do you want to spend your time and money? If you are currently making poor decisions that go against your core values you will have higher stress in your life, leading to higher cortisol levels, excess fat, fatigue, and anxiety. Be aware of every decision you make and let this awareness guide the way you live. DIET: I’m going to keep it simple. Drink more water. Prepare your own meals. Use food that grew from the ground or walked around. That’s it. Vegetables, fruit, grass-fed meat, fish, nuts and seeds. If you place high value on your health then you will take the little bit of extra time and effort needed to shop for and prepare your own meals. Just do it. MOVEMENT: Now I’m only going to focus on one thing: stop sitting so much! • CALORIE BURN DROPS TO 1 CALORIE PER MINUTE • PEOPLE WITH SITTING JOBS HAVE 2 X THE RATE OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE For many of you, sitting at your desk for up to 8 hours a day is inevitable. Take extra steps (literally) to limit your time spent sitting outside of work as well as at work. The key to starting off your New Year right? Start with small goals: 10 pushups a day or going to bed 30 minutes early. Once you have successfully implemented those into your routine, challenge yourself to finish reading that novel or make a new recipe. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing. Be proud of accomplishing and sticking with that one thing and move one to the next (small) challenge. Check out more blogs at iwantaBUZZ.com. Your source for medical advice.

What is new with concussions? Concussions remain in the forefront of athlete safety concerns. Unfortunately, there have been eight recorded deaths in sports this fall season from heart conditions, head injury, heat related and other causes. Athletic trainers, physicians, and healthcare professionals are working to educate the public as well as promote safety. While football gets a lot of media attention, remember soccer, hockey, lacrosse, and other contact sports are now beginning their seasons and are a source of concussion. Know the signs and symptoms of a concussion and remember, “When in doubt, sit them out. ” WHERE ARE WE AT WITH HELMET TECHNOLOGY AND SENSORS? Helmets prevent skull fractures, they do not necessarily prevent brain injury. While much has been done to improve helmet technology through padding, both inside and out, as well as a controversial rating system, concussions continue. There are new methods in use, especially at the collegiate level, for monitoring the severity, location and number of impacts incurred. In the NFL, they also use a specific spotter to alert medical personnel when they see an unusually hard hit or player acting suspiciously. Helmets with sensors are valued at about $425.00 for which some parents are willing to pay for but are a cost consideration for schools. WHAT IS RETURN TO LEARN? Sports are not the only area that needs an adjustment when one incurs a concussion. Classroom activities, socialization, reading, test taking, concentration, and comprehension can all be impacted. Academic accommodations may need to be made with a gradual return to learn process, which includes an incremental process in the classroom. Part of a comprehensive concussion program includes this in the process. For more information check www.cdc.gov under their “heads up” concussion program. PREVENTION AND RECOGNITION? While limited contact in sports helps, collisions will still occur resulting in concussions. This is a public health issue where parents and coaches should advocate for a Certified Athletic Trainer who has the resources to help to prevent and manage these concussive injuries. As Jim Thornton, President of the National Athletic Trainers Association says,” Would you ever drop your child at a swimming pool without a lifeguard? Yet parents drop their children off at hockey, lacrosse, football and other sports without an athletic trainer present – it doesn’t make sense.” Jim Mackie, M.Ed., ATC, LAT is a Licensed and Certified Athletic Trainer with the Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program and serves as the Athletic Trainer for Trinity Christian Academy through Athletic Training and Sports Medicine Services. What is unique about your bar area?

What is your funniest customer story?

It has a family section and an adult section.

Someone stole all the kegs from behind the restaurant to sell for scrap metal! There is a $30 deposit on each, so I lost $180! I was so mad! The next day, I was waiting on a customer and he yelled, “Someone just ran behind your restaurant with a keg!” This was at noon in broad daylight! I ran outside and he threw the keg in his back seat and sped away! I called 911 and reported a keg stolen behind my restaurant. Two police cars arrived 5 minutes later! They asked me where the crime was committed and I showed them the rack behind the restaurant. The officer was concerned and kept questioning me how and why I would keep them outside. I explained they were too big and storage inside was a problem. The officer said, “You keep cakes out here?” Apparently, 911 reported a CAKE being stolen from Players Grille! They were there in 5 MINUTES for a cake!

DIRECTIONS

Place chocolate and butter in microwavable bowl. Microwave at 30 second intervals, stirring after each, until chocolate is melted. In large bowl, beat remaining ingredients until thickened, about 5 minutes. GENTLY fold half of chocolate/ butter mixture until combined. GENTLY fold in remaining chocolate mixture. Spray 9 inch springform pan with baking spray (or butter pan). Pour batter into pan. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 to 45 minutes. Torte should jiggle slightly, and inserted toothpick should have a few crumbs. It should be more fudge like, not cakey. Enjoy!

Brew Time By Marc Wisdom With the colder winter months upon us, two distinct beer styles are coming into season: Barlywines and Winter Warmers. Both have interesting beginnings and provide for some truly wonderful beer-drinking experiences. Both have roots that reach back several centuries and both have histories that began in Britain. Over the next two months we will examine each, one per month. First we will take a look at Winter Warmers. A winter warmer is a traditional, malty-sweet, Strong Ale that is brewed in the winter months. It is usually quite dark, but not as dark as a stout, with a big malt presence. Sometimes, winter warmers have a few spices, especially in the United States, although spices are not necessarily a required ingredient in a winter warmer. The primary characteristic is strength; the average alcohol content by volume ranges from 6.0% to 8.0% ABV and some winter warmers reach 10% ABV or more. Christmas beer is another type of winter warmer, similarly strong in alcohol content and usually spiced. Winter warmers are an off-shoot of old ales that were historically served as a complement to mild ales. In pubs of the era, typically the landlord would serve the customer a blend of the sharper stock ale with the fruitier, sweeter mild ale to the customer’s taste. In London especially, the aged ale would take on a tart note from a secondary fermentation with brettanomyces yeast, which was present either in the pitching yeast or in the wooden equipment. Because of the time required for the aging process, some investors would buy mild ale from brewers, age it into old ale, and sell it at the higher price. Eventually, brewers began to keep some beer behind at the brewery, age it themselves and sell it to the pubs. In some cases old ale was a blend of young and old. The “stock ale” was the brewery’s very aged ale and was used to inject an “old” quality, and perhaps acidity to the blend. The Vikings of Scandinavia have perhaps the strongest claim with their tradition of drinking a strong, dark brew during their celebration of “Jul” or yule on December 21. The drafts were offered up to Norse gods such as Odin and Frey. The practice was so revered that Norway’s King Haakon I (“The Good,” c. 920-

NIGHTLIFE EVENTS

961) decreed each household must brew beer for the celebration. Later, in the 13th century when Christianity had taken hold and the celebration was moved to December 25, the Gulathing Laws were passed that required peasants to not only brew beer for the celebration, but they must also hold some sort of party to celebrate the day. Failure to uphold this responsibility could result in fines and even loss of property. In England, the tradition of Christmas ales has roots in the tradition of wassailing. Wassailing, or singing for Christmas treats, was traditionally done on Twelfth Night or the evening of January 5th. The tradition was that peasants would sing in front of the feudal lord’s homes in exchange for figgy pudding and a wassail drink, sometimes made of strong hard cider or Winter Warmer brews. The actual drink known as wassail varied from location to location, but a popular one was known as “Lambs Wool.” The recipe consisted of hot ale, roasted crab apples, sugar, spices, eggs and cream. Small pieces of toast were floated on the top of the drink.

Samichlaus has an ABV of around 14% (it varies slightly from year to year) and was produced from 1980 to 1995 by the Hürlimann brewery in Switzerland. After a hiatus of a few years, the brew was in 2000 picked up by the Eggenberg brewery in Austria who brews the beer just once a year on December 6 it is then aged for 10 months before bottling. Older vintages become more complex with a creamy warming finish. Serve with hardy robust dishes and desserts, particulary with chocolates, or as an after dinner drink by itself. Marc Wisdom has been known to wait up for Santa on Christmas Eve with visions of rare and vintage Christmas beers in his eyes in his stocking. Alas, he has never been able to stay awake for the arrival of jolly ol’ St. Nick. Follow his adventures and blog posts at: www.JaxBeerGuy.com.

Adding spices to the warmed beer gave way over the years to spices being included in the brewing process. Today, winter warmers and Christmas ales include many spices and flavors ranging from gingerbread to cranberry.

Source BEER:30 Nearly three years ago, Beer:30 opened its doors and became one of the only locally owned bottle shops devoted to craft beer. This past October, Beer:30 became the first locally owned bottle shop to have beer to go in the form of 32 ounce growlers. Co-owner Justen Mann explained the new focus on growlers. “This was always our intention. We want to give people the opportunity to enjoy good craft beer from their home. Our taps are all devoted to American craft. Most of the beer you can’t find in bottles. So, rather than having to go out to a bar, our customers can take good beer home with them.” Beer:30 has 15 beers on tap. Of those beers, all of them are craft and most of them are not found in bottles. This makes certain beers more accessible to consumers who would rather enjoy a beer at home and not at the bar.

Suds GREEN ROOM BREWING’S CAFÉ BLONDE It does not get more local than Green Room’s Café Blonde. This is a light colored beer that packs a ton of flavor. The beer is brewed with coffee from Jacksonville’s own Bold Bean Coffee Roasters. Looks can be deceiving. This beer doesn’t look like a coffee beer, but the aroma and flavor are unmistakably coffee infused, and that’s a good thing! And at 5% ABV, Café Blonde is a sessionable beer that would pair quite well with ham and eggs. Beer:30 is open daily and located at 1271 King St. To see more from the Beer Apostle, visit TheBeerApostle.com.

PROFESSOR DUBIOUS IS THE MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE PERSON IN THE WORLD BY A LARGE MARGIN. HERE, HE DEIGNS TO RESPOND TO YOUR ILL-INFORMED QUERIES. WHERE DOES CONSCIOUSNESS COME FROM? - F. P. Fanucci, Seattle, WA

Professor Dubious Says: While consciousness resides in the brain, it is generated in

the gallbladder and travels through the digestive system up to the brain. It functions there for 9 to 11 months, after which it is exhausted and travels back to the liver for a twomonth vacation. At this point, it has gotten spoiled by not having to work, and decides to give up entirely and get excreted in the urine. This cycle continues throughout your life, and means that you have 40 to 80 different consciousnesses over the course of your life. Thus when you say “I feel like a different person than when I was 14”, it is quite literally true that you are a different person. Your 14-year-old self is somewhere in the sewers.

WHAT MAKES WATER WET? - H. Kirby, New York, FL

Professor Dubious Says: The wetness of water comes from one of water’s

components, the chemical Furfurin Chlorinate, the wettest substance in existence. Skin contact with two drops of Furfurin Chlorinate can cause death from wetness in 20 minutes if not immediately treated with a fluffy towel. Contrary to popular belief, water is actually not all that wet. Many liquids are far wetter than water due to higher Furfurin concentrations. By the Spachulla Wetness Scale, the wettest common liquid is tapioca pudding, measuring in at 9.7 Spachullas (Sp.), followed by boar sweat at 9.5 Sp., pina coladas at 9.4 Sp., and diet tapioca pudding at 9.0 Sp. The world’s driest substance is dehydrated talcum powder, which, if mixed with Furfurin Chlorinate, would create a black hole that would swallow the known universe.

WHAT IS LYME DISEASE? - C. Belle, Phealine, WA

Professor Dubious Says:Lyme disease is misleadingly named. It is not so much a disease as a flavoring supplement used to make black licorice taste edible.

Someone has been dancing around a commitment. I don’t blame ya. Your mate isn’t a ten. So are you settling? Perhaps. But take a look in that mirror Leo. You aren’t getting any younger and that bloated waist line isn’t vanishing anytime soon. Maybe your mate is the one settling.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

Your current relationship continues to look very positive and long-term. You are getting support from friends, co-workers and the universe as a whole right now. Makes your wonder if this is too good to be real or are we all playing a joke on you? One big elaborate joke.

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

December brings the tri-fecta: proposals, pregnancies, and cohabitation. I don’t know about you, but at least one of those sounds scary (if not all three). So what to do? Can’t hide from it. Don’t want to be a jerk. It’s the Holidays; blame your avoidance on that.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

I read this horoscope online today. “See if you can surprise your boss or mate by showing off your talent.” I know, what to do?! You have no talents. Unless you count your strange ability to put nine donut holes in your mouth at once. Talent? Maybe not, but it’s story-worthy.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

It would seem you are more interested in spending money this month than looking for romance. I assume you’re buying gifts for yourself, seeing you will most likely be alone on the holidays. At least you will have a lot of new stuff to help you forget about your loneliness.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

Things are looking good for you this month. Because Pluto’s opposition with the South Node in your relationship sector is peaking, apparently that means your love life will start sparking. You just have to trust your relationships and good fortune to Pluto and South Nodes.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

Here’s a tip Aquarius, quit being a butthole. Wondering why life isn’t quite as great as it can be? It’s probably because you keep derailing your own train. Sure you’re stubborn, but that doesn’t mean you’re always right. You’re the one people are whispering about when you walk into a room.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

This is what I read the other day about you Pisces, “You may feel satisfied with what you’ve got, but now is a good time for you to rethink your options.” I couldn’t disagree more. I don’t recommend you rethinking anything. Be happy you have someone. We all know it could be a very long time until there is another.
