Jennifer Gornto, M.P.H., joined the Healthy Start Coalition in October 2013. During her tenure, she has overseen the expansion of the Magnolia Project, a federal Healthy Start program; the local implementation of the Healthy Start redesign; and the continued focus on serving babies, families and the community to improve birth outcomes and reduce infant mortality. Gornto is an experienced and enthusiastic professional with a strong background in public health, epidemiology, evaluation, marketing and community partnerships. A native of Jacksonville, she graduated with an M.P.H. from Emory University and a B.S. in Environmental Science from Mercer University.

Heather has been Executive Director of UCOM UrbanServ, Inc. since October 2012. Under her guidance and leadership, UCOM has expanded its partnership outreach to include local businesses and civic groups, as well as partnerships with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Jacksonville Giants. Service numbers have grown by 30% and our programs have grown to include an annual Christmas party, Summer Lunch Program and school supply giveaway.

Volunteers in Medicine

Volunteers in Medicine Jacksonville is a free healthcare clinic serving the working uninsured with primary and specialty medical care. Since opening in 2003, we have provided over 60,000 free appointments to people who earn their own living and yet still cannot afford the cost of healthcare on their own. Patients receive office visits, lab work, and many medications at no cost. In addition to basic primary care, we provide lung function testing, eye exams, prescription eyeglasses, nutritional counseling, weight loss counseling and diabetes education. Medical and administrative services are provided by a cadre of over 200 dedicated, professional volunteers who give of their time to improve the health of the greater Jacksonville community.

First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross

Lewis is the young, charismatic, insanely talented new music director of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra. At the ripe old age of 30, the Belfast, Ireland, native was chosen among a slew of talented contenders from around the country to replace the outgoing Fabio Mechetti as conductor with our local symphony.

With stints at the New York Philharmonic and Boston’s Discovery Ensemble already under his belt, Lewis, who was educated at Cambridge, is perfectly poised to lead the symphony forward – and attract younger fans to the genre.

“We’ve got to inspire a new generation to love classical music,” says Lewis, who is sure to bring a Millenial Generation approach to a very traditional sphere.

Volunteers in Medicine Jacksonville is open Tuesday through Saturday for clinical appointments, nursing appointments, blood pressure checks, and prescription pickup. We qualify new patients twice per week, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, after a preliminary phone screening. Volunteers in Medicine Jacksonville is a non-profit, receives no federal or state funding, and operates with financial support from corporations, foundations and individuals.

This is a brand new food bank and a whole different business model called “Fast, Fresh & Free”. The network of member food pantries and community agencies are deeply rooted in neighborhoods across the area to get food to those who need it most. On a daily basis volunteers play a key role in doing the work of a food bank. Feeding Northeast Florida needs people to make phone calls, sort and package food and much more. The work they do in the community is critical to thousands of hungry families, elderly and children. Your time is precious to you, but your time invested on behalf of a hungry child is priceless. BUZZ: Was it always your goal to become an endocrinologist? Tell us about your journey. Dr. Fox: Early in medical school I was fascinated with the physiology of the endocrine system. Later on during medical school I was able to see several patients with a variety of endocrine (hormone) disorders and became even more interested in this field and in being an endocrinologist. During my pediatric residency (in Phoenix, AZ) this interest was enhanced by the many different endocrine disorders I encountered in children and adolescents, including diabetes. I knew soon after starting residency that I wanted to be a pediatric endocrinologist. I went on to complete my training at UCLA in their pediatric endocrinology fellowship training program. BUZZ: You were one of the leaders recognized at the Legacy of Leaders dinner and in the Portrait of Leadership Gallery that was held at Ocean 60. What does being a leader mean to you? Dr. Fox: I am very honored to be considered a leader in this community. Being a leader means a number of things to me. First, it means being not just a part of the community but also doing what you can to support the community and those around you. It also means being an excellent role model for my children and for all of my patients. It is important to instill inspiration in our children. Being a leader helps them become future leaders. BUZZ: What advice would you leave future leaders? Dr. Fox: The future leaders of our world are our children and our children’s children. I hope to encourage others to work hard but still enjoy what life has to offer. Our future leaders need to recognize the importance of family and community.

inter Broadhurst is a local artist who strives to have an impact on the world through her art. Winter participated in the Awareness with Art (AWA) program to support the Inn Ministry (InnMinistry.org), which is a home away for expecting mothers who are homeless and or in a dangerous situation. Some of the proceeds from her auctioned artwork from AWA went to the Inn Ministry. A student at FSCJ, Winter has received the honor of being on the President’s List twice. Right now she is working towards her Associate in Arts degree. Eventually Winter wants the opportunity to earn a Bachelor’s degree in Converged Communications, so she can work in the non-profit field. Winter’s goal is to be able to use her art and writing gifts aiding non-profits in their important work. Winter Broadhurst has a piece of artwork currently on display at Florida State College, Kent Campus.

Interview with Toni Philips from, “A SWAMP RADIO CHRISTMAS” BUZZ: Would you please tell us a little bit about BUZZ: What is the strangest thing a role required your background in theatre here in Jacksonville? you to do? Theater in the River City By Tamara McClaran, Northeast Florida Theater Enthusiast “Miracle On 34th Street The Musical” At Limelight Theatre The musical based on one of the most popular Christmas films of all time, “Miracle on 34th Street,” is this season’s holiday show at the Limelight Theatre in St. Augustine. The musical has a book, music and lyrics by Meredith Wilson, best known for writing and composing “The Music Man.” The heartwarming story of “Miracle on 34th Street” reminds us that the holiday season is the perfect time to share love, believe in miracles and bask in the magic of life. Shelli Long is directing.

“It’s an old school musical with a story that pulls on people’s heartstrings,” Long said. The musical tells the story of Susan, a young girl who dreams of a father and brother to make her family whole, and Kris Kringle, a kind man who claims he is the real Santa Claus. When employed as a Santa at Macy’s, he quickly spreads a wave of love across New York City. But can he help make Susan’s dreams come true? McKenna Hazel

“The musical’s message is you’re never too old to believe,” said Long. Long has assembled a full orchestra and a 20-member cast which includes six children. Two young actors, Gracia Romaine and McKenna Hazel, are double cast for the role of Susan. The musical is filled with humor, spectacle and beloved songs like “It’s Beginning to Look A Lot Like Christmas.”

FIRST COAST NO MORE HOMELESS PETS The mission of First Coast No More Homeless Pets (FCNMHP) is to end the killing of dogs and cats in shelters in our community, northeast Florida and the nation. As a nonprofit that collaborates closely with the entire community, we strive to dramatically improve the welfare of animals and promote the valuable bond between humans and their pets. Our work is humane, purposeful and comprehensive. In the United States, approximately 3.5 million pets are euthanized every year. While euthanasia can alleviate suffering in some cases, healthy pets make up the majority of these figures. Our combination of aggressive spay/neuter efforts, adoption initiatives and pet retention programs have resulted in significant improvements for animals. THE EUTHANASIA RATE IN JACKSONVILLE HAS DECREASED BY AN ASTOUNDING 90% SINCE OUR INCEPTION IN 2002. Reducing euthanasia improves the quality of life for all residents in our community. FCNMHP provides comprehensive services designed to reduce overpopulation. We believe that the death of even one healthy pet is a prompt call for action. The approach of FCNMHP is to carefully look at data from the city shelter (Jacksonville Animal Care & Protective Services) and determine the origin of surrendered pets, as well as the types of pets least likely to leave the shelter alive. Armed with this information, we target our efforts. For example, we offer free and low-cost spay/neuter services for dogs and cats and focus on zip code areas with high pet surrender rates. This past fiscal year we performed 31,125 spay and neuter surgeriesâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;with 180,000+ since 2002! Pairing homeless pets with new families is a big part of our lifesaving work. FCNMHP plans and implements large-scale adoption events. Our MEGA ADOPTION events are the largest of their kind in the nation, finding homes for up to 1,000 dogs and cats per event and attracting up to 8,000+ individuals looking to adopt a pet. AS OF NOVEMBER 2014, THROUGH OUR MEGA ADOPTION EVENTS, WE HAVE HELPED PLACE 7,232 DOGS AND CATS IN NEW HOMES. We invite several shelters and rescues from northeast Florida to adopt their homeless pets, providing much of the transportation, crate set-up and a team of staff and volunteers to run the logistics during these weekend long events. In addition, we assist other communities to plan similar events, saving thousands of dogs and cats from potential euthanasia nationwide. Without all of these vital services and the collaboration between our partner groups, the community risks returning to the way things were before we started - when more than 23,000+ pets were euthanized each year in Jacksonville. I got involved seven years ago as Chairman of the Jacksonville Waterways Commission when we heard a presentation about JHNSA’s proposal to bring the ship to Jacksonville and their request for docking space on the Southbank Riverwalk. While I haven’t personally served in the military, several of my family members have and still do. This would be a wonderful tribute to all of the Jacksonville residents that currently serve or have served in our armed forces in the cause of protecting our country. It can also serve as a great education tool for our young people to help them learn about the values, importance, and traditions of our armed forces. There is nothing like it in the entire state of Florida and the closest similar museums are in Mobile, Alabama and Charleston, South Carolina.

HEAL serves individuals and families living with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The Foundation serves as an outreach organization providing educational programs and camps tailored to the needs of our Autism Community. Over the past five years, HEAL is proud to have awarded more than one million dollars to provide: • Grants to support camps, education, and community programs • Classroom enhancements for local schools such as iPads • Educational seminars for parents, teachers and therapists • Fun recreational and social events for families

James Luther Bevel, was a top lieutenant of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The week I relocated to Jacksonville, the Human Rights Ordinance failed by one vote. I was in that standing-room only council meeting and was deeply impacted by the sobs and cheers from opposing members of our community. I wondered what I might do to help create a more just community, raise awareness and promote equality for all. A few months later, I founded and co-created, We Are Straight Allies.

One dollar donated to Nourishment Network generates seven meals, or the equivalent of two days of food for a person in need. By establishing relationships with large food suppliers like ConAgra and retail partners like Wal-Mart, WinnDixie, Publix, BJs and Target, Nourishment Network is able to rescue an enormous volume of food and stretch each dollar incredibly far.

To end the killing of dogs and cats in shelters in our community, northeast Florida and the nation. I grew up in Indiana with rescue dogs, cats, horses and all sorts of other critters I would find and then help. Giving back was a way of life and I was always surrounded by my pets and helping at local shelters. Having worked now for the for-profit and non-profit sector, it’s great to be able to focus on animal welfare full-time. The euthanasia rate in Jacksonville has decreased by an astounding 95% since our inception in 2002. Bill and his family have lived in Jacksonville for over 30 years, the last 22 in Clifton. He is Vice President and Principal of Akel, Logan, Shafer, a 50-year-Jacksonville-based architectural and planning firm. Through Bill’s thirty years experience as a practicing architect, he has a thorough understanding of the importance of the challenges businesses face and particularly, the unique concerns facing small businesses. Another great benefit of his substantial business experience, he understands good design and community planning and its impact on the city. Since 2007, Bill has served on the Jacksonville City Council, representing District 2. Bill currently serves on Land Use and Zoning and Recreation and Community Development committees. He has chaired the Rules and Transportation, Energy, and Utilities Committees. He also serves on the North Florida TPO and chairs the Northeast Florida Regional Transportation Commission. • He worked with the Environmental Protection Board to successfully pass the city’s first sustainable building ordinance that provides for expedited permitting for those engaging in environmentally sustainable building activities. • Prior to being elected to serve District 2 on the City Council in 2007, Bill was actively involved in numerous Jacksonville community boards and commissions including the JCCI, Downtown Economic Advisory Committee, Riverside Avondale Preservation, City of Jacksonville Small and Emerging Businesses Summit, and more. • He worked with the Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association to bring the USS Charles Adams (DDG2) to Jacksonville as a ship museum, including sponsoring the legislation providing a home for the ship on downtown Northbank. All too often, the stress can stay with you long after guests leave and the last new toy is put away. If you tend to equate the holidays with cursing traffic at the mall, why not take a new approach this year? Here are some

So it was to my delight to be able to grab the Bayard Big Boy (breakfast feast for champions as I have so aptly named it) at midafternoon on Wednesday! This well-endowed eating endeavor included 3 eggs, thick, crispy, bacon with selection of house-made home fries or grits, and a large homemade waffle. The home fries were crispy with bits of grilled onion and green pepper and my over medium eggs were cooked perfectly. BUZZ: What cuisines influence your style of cooking? CBD: French; however, I feel more of a connection with traditional French classic cuisine – the old school.

BUZZ: What is your most memorable kitchen experience? CBD: Learning under the direction of my uncle, my chef hero. I interned at La Lorraine in Paris where my Uncle Jean-Pierre Morton was Executive Chef. His career spanned there for 40 years. This upscale restaurant would serve up to 1,000 people in a day. There were several stations (i.e., sauce station, seafood, vegetable, grill, garde-manger, or cold food station). I learned all of them. Everything was prepared from scratch.

DIRECTIONS Sautee bacon and onions in a little bit of oil. Set aside. Beat together eggs, heavy cream, half-n-half and salt. Place bacon and onion mix at the bottom of the pie. Add shredded gruyere. Pour egg mixture over. Bake in preheated oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for about 40 – 50 minutes until the custard is golden, puffed and set, yet still slightly wiggly in the center. Cool for about 15 minutes before serving.

The Salvation Army Angel Tree Project

he Salvation Army’s annual Angel Tree project benefits more than 13,300 children in Northeast Florida each holiday season. The project gets underway in October, with an application process that each family must undergo to be deemed eligible for The Salvation Army’s holiday programs of assistance, including Angel Tree.*

Once a family’s eligibility is confirmed, each child (up to age 12) in that family will be represented by a paper angel that will be placed on decorated trees in various public places from mid-November through early December. Each Angel tag will bear a child’s first name, age, gender, clothing and shoe sizes, one or two “wishes” expressed by the child, and a special code used for sorting and distributing the gifts. To participate as an Angel Tree donor, a person will select one or more of the Angel tags from a tree, and they will receive an “Angel bag” and instructions at that time. They will then purchase gifts for the child or children whose tags they have chosen. Although it is the shopper’s sole discretion what or how much they give, we do ask that a minimum of one new toy and a full outfit of clothing be secured in the bag before returning. The vast majority of participants give significantly more. The filled, properly-labeled Angel bags are returned (no later than December 11th) to one of many official Angel Tree locations, where they will be kept securely until picked up by Salvation Army personnel. The filled bags are then sorted and placed on a gigantic grid, by family, for distribution a few days before Christmas. Parents come to pick up the bags of gifts from our Toy Shop by appointment, but we discourage them from bringing their children with them. It’s our desire that the parents take the gifts home and wrap them (donors and The Salvation Army even provide the wrapping paper) and give them to the children for Christmas. Doing so will preserve some dignity for the parents and the children will not need to know that The Salvation Army had anything to do with their “Merry Christmas”. More frequently than we like to acknowledge, Angel tags representing these real boys and girls end up unclaimed on the tree, forgotten on a desk or in a purse, or for some other reason do not result in gifts for those children. Some of the bags we receive are poorly-filled or contain used items. These situations account for at least 10% of the children in the project. To provide gifts for the unreturned tags, or to add to bags

that are inadequately filled, we seek donations for “Forgotten Angels.” We do what we can to gather additional, undesignated gifts to distribute to those families. We particularly need assistance with new clothing and new shoes for “Forgotten Angels,” although toys are needed as well. Distribution Day in Duval County is by appointment Tuesday December 16 from 9 am – 4 pm. Distribution takes place in a donated space at Regency Square Mall. The Toy Shop is located on the Atlantic Boulevard side of Regency next to Sears. The families who benefit from our Angel Tree project also receive a Thanksgiving food basket in November, as well as filled children’s stockings for the children (12 and under) on Toy Shop day. * The Salvation Army has a strong commitment to responsible stewardship of donated funds and material goods, so each family is screened to assess their true needs. We believe this sends a positive message to the community, assuring them that the toys and clothing donated to the Angel Tree project are going to families that likely would not otherwise be able to provide Christmas gifts for their children.

A son of South Carolina, Anderson was introduced to jazz by his father at a young age, and was always a passionate student of music and the arts. The youngest of seven, Anderson grew up performing and singing in church with his older brothers. Anderson’s family recognized his talent as a musical prodigy when he was introduced to the saxophone at age twelve. He later became a member of the All-State High School Jazz Ensemble for South Carolina. After graduation, Anderson studied jazz at North Carolina Central University. There he was a member of the program’s world renowned Jazz Ensemble directed by Dr. Ira Wiggins. He studied with Branford Marsalis and Gospel saxophonist Donald Hayes for several years, achieving many accolades along the way. He received the Chancellor’s Award three years running and performed for Hilary Clinton and Jesse Jackson. Anderson was a member of the HBCU All-Star Jazz Ensemble as 1st Tenor Sax for three successive years. The pop/R&B and jazz musician’s career is fast becoming one to watch. Marcus Anderson is currently performing to audiences all over the world as one of Prince’s saxophonists in New Power Generation. As part of New Power Generation, Anderson has played and been showcased in such iconic festivals such as the Essence Music Festival, Monteux Jazz Festival and the Curacao North Sea Jazz Festival. Listen closely to Hunter Hayes as he talks, that millionmile-an-hour voice, all rapid-fire energy and bustling passion.
