MAKING A DIFFERENCE

FIRST COAST CONNECT MELISSA ROSS the most interesting person i’ve interviewed this month

She’s the lovable local personality known to all as Tracy Dot Com. Tracy Collins has appeared on local television for years. Always with a smile and a bubbly personality, you’ve seen her covering many events around town for different media outlets over the years: But behind the smiles and the packed social calendar, Tracy was dealing with a problem she kept hidden, one affecting millions of Americans. Alcoholism. Binge drinking that nearly killed her. Heavy, daily drinking that she hid from the public, from friends, from family. Tracy turned 50 this month and at her birthday party, she revealed her problem to the world. But, she’s gone further than that. Tracy Collins has started work on a book about her journey. It’s called Stumbling Into Sobriety. And, in her newfound sobriety she has started on a path toward a new life and a new purpose. “I’m going to be doing some public speaking about this,” she told listeners. “There are so many people who are struggling.” Learn more at Tracy’s website: TheCrushedVelvetProject.com And make sure to tune into First Coast Connect on WJCT 89.9 FM each weekday morning at 9am to hear from the most compelling newsmakers of the First Coast! 8

V for Victory, a 501c3 non-profit organization, was created in May of 2017 after a local business owner’s young son was diagnosed with Leukemia. The owner’s of V Pizza rallied together to figure out how they could serve other members of our community who are facing the same issues as their own. The primary mission of the organization is to help alleviate some of the everyday burdens off a local family or individual who is fighting cancer. One hundred percent of the donations they receive go back to helping serve these families. They help with basic needs such as lawn care, pet services, groceries, auto repairs and meal deliveries just to name a few. Victory has partnered with a number of local businesses to help them in fulfilling their mission of providing as many services as possible. Their business partners are never required to help more than one family, one time a month and are only asked to provide what they can. Victory will cover the cost, if a donation cannot be made, and only asks that the service be offered at a discount or wholesale. V for Victory donates lunch every Tuesday to the families staying at Ronald McDonald House, as well as sends an ice cream truck every other week for them to enjoy. Victory covers all of the ice cream costs and just hopes this gives the families staying at Ronald McDonald House a little bit of pleasure at the end of a long day of hospital visits. Every other week, they donate lunch to every patient, and their family, staying on Wolfson Children’s Hospital Weaver 4. V for Victory assists any family, or individual, battling any type of cancer. Donations can be made at any V Pizza restaurant location.

CONSIDERATIONS WHEN STARTING A NOT-FOR-PROFIT COMPANY You want to help our community become better by raising awareness of something you are passionate about to the general populous. It can be the arts, education, homelessness, or even business development. How do you give yourself the best opportunity to achieve this goal? That’s easy, you start a not-for-profit organization! But wait, not so fast. While non-profits can make it easier to help the community, there are a few things you need to consider before starting a company. The most important is whether there are other entities that already provide the same or a similar service to the one you are considering. If so, you might not need to start an entity, but instead simply join under their umbrella. Of course, you will want to do some research about how they work and whether you believe you can work with that group. If you cannot find another entity or you cannot work with the one you found, you then have a few more questions to answer. First, what type of non-profit you are going to be. While most people think of a charity when they think non-profit there are actually many types – civic organizations are another popular type for bettering the community. Next, you need to consider what regulatory or compliance requirements you will have to comply with – non-profits, especially charities, tend to have more oversight than most for-profit companies. They need to register with the IRS and, possibly, the state department in charge of consumer protection. One thing many people starting a non-profit may not realize is that they still must file tax returns, usually via IRS Form 990, pay sales and use tax, and pay taxes on “unrelated business income” which is simply money from sources that aren’t the company’s main line of business. LEGAL PERSPECTIVE: ADOPTION Integrity Law P. A. 1934 Retaw St., Jacksonville, FL 32210 | (904) 224-2100 | IntegrityLawJax.com

It is said that an adoption is like grafting a new branch onto a family tree. Every adoption changes history by creating new family relationships. Integrity Law assists with several varieties of adoption in Florida. Private Adoptions are usually done by consent of one or both birth parents. In this type of adoption, the birth parent(s) selects the person or couple to adopt the child. The selected adoptive parent(s) will need to have a home study conducted to determine their fitness and ability to care for the child. Private adoptions are a two-step process. First the birth parents’ rights to the child are extinguished in one judicial proceeding. Next, the adoptive parent(s) petitions the court to adopt the child. Financial assistance is sometimes provided by the adoptive parent(s) to the birth parent(s). Stepparent and Relative adoptions follow a different procedure. These adoptions are an expedited process whereby a stepparent or relative within the third degree of relation to the child petitions the court to adopt. It is a one-step process. The birth parents’ rights are extinguished and the adoption is granted in a single judicial proceeding. Also, the requirement for a home study is usually waived. Sometimes the adoption is contested by one or both birth parents and the adoptive parent must prove to the court that the child should be freed for adoption. Some children become available to adopt after the State of Florida has stepped in to protect the child from abuse, abandonment or neglect. After the child is freed for adoption by the State, anyone may apply to adopt the child. Besides providing a forever home to a child, there are additional benefits that come with adoption through the dependency and foster care system. These benefits may include health insurance for the child, free public college tuition and monthly stipends. The State also covers the cost of filing and attorney’s fees for the adoptive parents. It is a high honor for us at Integrity Law to assist individuals and couples of all backgrounds and orientations expand their family. If you are a birth mother seeking solutions or an individual or couple seeking to expand your family, we can help. Call us today at (904) 674-3460 for your free consultation. ARTS UNLEASHED New Sculpture Walk Opens Jenny Hager, Associate Professor of Sculpture in the Department of Art & Design at UNF’s College of Arts & Sciences has done it again. Several years ago she received one of the initial Spark grants and created the first Sculpture walk in Main St. Park. It was a great success, so this year she has organized the Springfield Sculpture Walk in Klutho Park, which opened in conjunction with PorchFest. Using a grant from the Florida Department of State and local matching funds, ten artists from around the country have loaned their sculptures for the next two years to the project. However, Jenny’s plan is to raise private donations to purchase three of the sculptures to create a permanent exhibition at Klutho. Local artists Michael Cottrell and UNF student Jennifer Peek have been joined by Matthias Neuman, from Brooklyn, NY; Robert Cordisco, from Palm Beach; Jim Gallucci and Hanna Jubran from North Carolina; Michele Moushey Dale and Tommy Riefe from Wisconsin and Jennifer Rubin Garey, from Pennsylvania. The sculptures are from many different Jim Gallucci’s Oracles Gate materials, from wood to cement to steel and Photo by Mark Painter Pariani project very individual themes and messages. Some forms are quite familiar, like the stack of orange slices called “Slices of Heaven” by Craig Berube Gray and “Oracle’s Gate” by Jim Gallucci, while others are more abstract like Michael Cotrell’s “Socket” and Donald Gialanella’s “Plenum Orb”. The sculptures have been set along the walkway in Klutho Park giving the chance to see these wonderful works while taking a pleasant stroll through the park. It seems that new sculpture is popping up in the area with a new very large piece in front of One Enterprise Center on Water St. to the UNF Sculpture Park in Jacksonville Beach, another of Jenny Hager’s efforts where five new sculptures by UNF students were unveiled. LAURA LEE SMITH’S NEW NOVEL PRAISED AS “MAJESTIC” BY PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

St. Augustine writer Laura Lee Smith’s second novel, The Ice House, will be released by Grove Press on December 5. Publishers Weekly calls the novel “a majestic reconciliation story.” The book, partly inspired by the iconic Ribera Street building that now houses The St. AugustineDistillery and The Ice Plant, tells the story of a man on the verge of losing his livelihood and of losing forever his relationship with his only son. Smith, who has been praised for her “intelligence, heart, wit” (Richard Russo, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Empire Falls), released her first book, Heart of Palm, in 2013. Set in St. Augustine and in the fictional town of Utina, Heart of Palm won wide acclaim and was dubbed “incandescent” by O, the Oprah Magazine. Her short fiction has also been featured in Best American Short Stories and New Stories from the South: The Year’s Best. In The Ice House, Johnny MacKinnon might be on the verge of losing it all. The ice factory he married into, which he’s run for decades, is facing devastating OSHA fines following a mysterious accident and may have to close. He hasn’t spoken to his son Corran back in Scotland since Corran’s heroin addiction finally drove Johnny to the breaking point. And now, after a collapse on the factory floor, it appears Johnny may have a brain tumor. Johnny’s been ordered to take it easy, but in some ways, he thinks, what’s left to lose? This may be his last chance to bridge the gap with Corran—and to have any sort of relationship with the baby granddaughter he’s never met. Witty and heartbreaking by turns, The Ice House is a vibrant portrait of multifaceted, exquisitely human characters that readers will not soon forget.

ARTS IN THE KNOW Black Historic Figures Mural

While Artrepublic might be getting the majority of the coverage on adding murals to Jacksonville, there are other groups that are also using this medium to add some culture to the city. The Jacksonville Cultural Development Corporation, whose primary objective is to foster economic empowerment, increase cultural diversity and awareness and build bridges in the community through creative placemaking also wanted to use murals to achieve this goal. With the help of a grant from the PNC Arts Alive program, they started a project to paint a mural of historical black figures from Jacksonville’s Eastside along A. Philip Randolph Blvd. The mural was completed by local artists Marsha Hatcher, Suzanne Pickett and Annelies Dykgraaf, who also serve on the Board of JCDC. Figures represented are A. Philip Randolph; Zora Neale Hurston; Clarence Williams, who owned the mural building; James Weldon Johnson, famous for writing the black anthem “Lift Every Voice and Sing”; Robert “Bullet Bob” Hayes; and A. L. Lewis, who founded the Afro-American Life Insurance Company in Jacksonville. One figure, Pearlie Graham who lives in the neighborhood, is still to be added to the mural. The mural can be seen at 826 A. Philip Randolph Blvd.

CENTER STAGE A GENTLEMAN’S GUIDE TO LOVE AND MURDER Both Lutvak and Freedman, who met in 1981 at NYU’s Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program, and director Darko Tresnjak, made their Broadway debuts with Gentleman’s Guide, which Charles Isherwood of The New York Times called “inspired and hilarious.” The plot, loosely based on a 1907 novel by Roy Horniman, concerns a penniless young man named Monty Navarro who discovers that he is the ninth in line to become the Earl of Highhurst. Since the aristocratic family, the D’Ysquiths, disinherited his deceased mother and denies his existence, Monty takes matters into his own hands; he knocks off each of his relatives, one by one, in outrageously amusing ways. What keeps the musical light and entertaining is that every single one of the D’Ysquiths – male, female, young and old – is played by the same actor. “If you have a talented actor getting killed over and over again,” says director Tresnjak, who won a Tony for his work on the show, “then each murder is a reward, because he’s going to come back as another delightful characterization.” And, Freedman adds that each D’Ysquith is “loathsome in different ways, but in kind of the same way, in their attitude toward the little people, and their arrogance, which is silly. They’re all silly people, too.” National Touring Company. January 5 at Thrasher-Horne Center When the Tony Awards were handed out in June of 2014, the stylishly comic musical, A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, took home four trophies, including the biggest: Best Musical. “It was the most incredible thing,” says author Robert Freedman, who also took home an award for best book, “it’s surreal and it’s wonderful.” His collaborator, Steven Lutvak, who wrote the music and co-authored the lyrics, adds, “given the almost eleven years that we had worked on the show, to win that was nothing less than astonishing.”

Tresjnak says all the musical’s characters – even the seemingly nice ones – are “a little wicked.” And the writers admit they took great pains to make their protagonist, Monty, who also romances two women in the show, sympathetic, despite his murderous proclivities. “He’s an underdog, and this is the comic side of The Talented Mister Ripley. Why do people like those Patricia Highsmith books and movies? Why do we like to see people get away with it? Because, a part of us wants to get away with it – whatever it is.” A big part of the musical’s appeal is its theatricality. There’s a toy stage inside a larger proscenium, which constantly opens to reveal new two-dimensional settings for the murders (a parish church, a frozen lake, a garden, etc.). The ensemble of six play multiple roles, and the score has echoes of Gilbert and Sullivan, Lerner and Loewe, and English music hall. “What we are, in a way, is a very low comedy in a very fancy box,” says Lutvak. “There’s all that faux classical music and it’s all very proper and it’s Edwardian England and the women are all corseted and everything is buttoned up. But, in reality, it’s a low comedy; it’s a Bert Lahr, laugh-your-ass-off comedy.” Audiences of all ages have embraced Gentleman’s Guide… and now it’s your chance. Thrasher-Horne Center in Orange Park is bringing the tour production to town for one night only, January 5th, 2018. It is the regional premiere of this killer show and, like the D’Ysquiths, tickets are disappearing fast. To secure your prime seat for the murders, or for more information about the musical and venue, visit THcenter.org.

RONNIE COSSE

FOUNDER AND DOCTOR OF PHYSICAL THERAPY AT DIRECTDPT

With rising healthcare costs, many people are choosing to see physical therapists for both injury management and prevention. With constantly updated research, legislation and technology, getting quality advice from a physical therapist may be easier than you think. Legislation has included the ability to access a physical therapist directly, without a referral, in all 50 states. This could potentially save you time and money by allowing you to skip the doctor’s visit and avoid unnecessary x-rays, MRIs and medication prescriptions. Going to the PT is shown to be a safe and effective strategy, as physical therapists are trained to look for “red flags” during every patient visit. If those red flags are present at any time the PT can and will refer you to the most appropriate medical specialist. With updated technology, physical therapy is even expanding into the world of telehealth. DirectDPT.com is an online physical therapy clinic that allows you to speak face-to-face with a physical therapist from wherever you are, and it’s on a 100% HIPAA compliant secure server. What’s best part about telehealth PT? The cost is low and you are able to connect using the devices you already have such as smart phones, tablets, and laptops. Telehealth PT increases convenience, reduces cost and provides you with expert injury management and prevention advice with the click of a button. If you are having aches and pains that interfere with your daily activities, it may be time to see a physical therapist. Whether in person or online, let a physical therapist get you on the right track to total health and wellness.

Adulting in 5 Minutes: Finding the Work/Life Balance By: Josh Krafchick

STEP ONE: FIND THE WORK/LIFE BALANCE: ONLY 40 MORE YEARS UNTIL RETIREMENT.... I’ve seen it happen over and over again. You go from a high school superstar into a college drunk, then a college drunk, into a young professional drunk. You will come to find a lot of people channel their energy the wrong way. The most important way to cope with professional life is to have things to look forward to on a day-to-day basis. Whether its sports, reading a book, or an upcoming vacation, you need to remind yourself: why do we work?

ASK THE DOC

We work in order to do the activities that we are passionate about! I keep my work/life balanced by utilizing the following strategies: 1) Always take lunch at work. 2) Use all of your vacation time 3) Sign up for outside work activities Spending time with co-workers 40 + hours every week can be irritating, which is why it’s good to meet people outside of the workplace. There are typically young professional clubs, intramurals, or community service organizations to get involved to meet people with similar passions. It is much easier to meet those people that catch your eye outside of a bar/ club setting. By being involved in outside work activities, most people will have their guard down, which will make it easier to approach those we may not even think about pursuing in the bar/club scene. In result, you will develop your social skills, which will help you professionally by becoming a more polished public speaker. This will then allow you to become confident, improve your communication skills, and help you network to help improve your social status within your community. The key to becoming a great speaker is to become a better listener. Make sure that you ask people open-ended questions to allow them to start opening up the conversation. By asking these questions, it allows you to listen, which will give the individual you are pursuing the opportunity to open up and decrease the awkwardness of meeting someone new.

CUISINE

Two Thumbs Up How Good Food Should Taste

Cowford Chophouse

floors with the top level being the rooftop bar where there are spectacular views. The second level offers a smaller more intimate dining area.

By: Anna Eatz Jax

the facts

We started with several of the appetizers, Baked Mac and Cheese, Duck Fat Corn Bread covered with a Blue Crab salad, Beef Tartar served in a marrow bone and topped with a Quail egg, grilled Nueske’s bacon and several others. My two favorites are the Beef Tartar and the Duck Fat Cornbread. Both dishes arrived beautifully plated; the eye appeal was top notch. The presentation was modern and the food flavorful and satisfying.

Where: 101 E Bay St. Price: $$$ Contact: CowfordcChopHouse.com

Our steaks, some of the best I have sampled in Jacksonville were prime A1 rated by us. I ran with the Waygu topped with Foie Gras, a separate topping available for your dining pleasure. The combination of these items was like eating velvet. Waygu is the closest to Kobe Beef we can experience here in town; this steak was perfect on every level. Our second meat choice, the Rib Eye Cap, or Spinalis Dorsi, is known as the most coveted cut on the steer. After a taste of my companion’s choice, I would have to agree. Moist, warm, pink and topped with roasted garlic cloves, a steak not to be ignored. We also shared the Asparagus Risotto. The rice and texture were excellent with the hints of asparagus shining through. The only downside was the food was too heavily salted, so we chose not to finish the dish.

Duck Fat Cornbread

Dessert rounded out a perfect dinner, and we went all in. We chose the Cinnamon Roll Brulee and a magnificent Chocolate Truffle Torte. I honestly was unable to decide which one was the most delectable. Being a brulee and chocolate fan, it was painful to determine. That is the best reason to share, no decisions needed. Personal Chef

You were born and raised in Santa Helena, a small town in Brazil in the gaucho culture. Please tell us about your youth and explain to our readers what comprises the Gaucho Culture. A Gaucho is anyone who is born in the South of Brazil and raised within that culture. The Gauchos of Brazil have formed a culture of their own, complete with its cuisine and a personal love of the land of South America. Training begins when the children are very young, learning how to prepare and cook the meats. The father teaches how to make the Churrasco, a term referring to beef or grilled meat. Since I was a little boy, I grew up with that style, and the Mama always teaches how to prepare the salads. How did you get started at Fogo de Chao? To work in a restaurant, you have to understand how to serve the patron inside the restaurant. I started at Fogo de Chao in Brazil when I was 17 years old and eventually moved to the kitchen to butchering, cooking and then serving. How long have you been cooking professionally? It will be 20 years this month. As general manager and head Gaucho Chef, what is your usual routine? It’s a long journey, as the GM you must be be sure everything is going well. You must see if any position requires additional staff, or perhaps extra team members. Sometimes it means I have to go fill in. There are always people scheduled to prepare for the next service. With the new staff, we are doing quite a bit of training. What do you like most about your job? I like to serve the people, to make them feel welcome and happy.

Where is your favorite place in the world? I have not been to many places, but the U. S. is by far the best country and the best place to be.

CROSSFIT FOR THE FAMILY

by Dara Sweatt

WHAT’S UP NEXT

JACKSONVILLE ICEMEN WINTER SCHEDULE Dec. 2 vs. Norfolk Admirals Dec. 12 @ Atlanta Gladiators Crossfit is a high-intensity fitness program incorporating elements from several sports and types of exercise. It is a very popular form of workout and one where you are able to compete for various levels of strength. Jacksonville is home to several crossfit gyms and several members getting their Hans and Frans on picking things up and putting things down! Mark and Autumn Hutchinson are siblings and they like to bond in a very unique way: through crossfit. Mark began his crossfit journey at Crucible Crossfit in 2014 through a connection with the owner, Lance. From day one he was in love and inspired his younger sister Autumn to do the same the following year. Autumn is a high school student and began crossfit because she wanted to get better at the running track and playing soccer and volleyball. Outside of the gym, Autumn’s grandmother is her biggest inspiration because even though she grew up with a rough life, she made the most of it and is now very successful; an attitude Autumn aspires to have through growing with crossfit. After getting comfortable at the gym, she began to compete and fell in love with how much fun the competitions were.

“Everyone is so nice and welcoming, it’s the kind of atmosphere you can’t get enough of.” Autumn said her goal is to compete on the Crucible’s Regional team and win state for weightlifting. She wants to teach girls that it’s okay to lift weights and have an athletic body. She stressed how important it is to stay discipline and think about how healthy you’re becoming.

Dec. 8 @ Florida Everblades Dec. 9 @ Florida Everblades Dec. 13 vs. Manchester Monarchs Dec. 16 vs. Greenville Swamp Rabbits Dec. 27 @ Orlando Solarbears Dec. 29 @ Norfolk Admirals Dec. 30 @ Norfolk Admirals

As for Mark, his boss convinced him to compete in a large competition called Wodapalooza and after receiving third place, he realized it was something he wanted to pursue. His training partners are a huge inspiration to him inside the gym, but he motivates and pushes himself because success is something he thoroughly enjoys.

Jan. 3 vs. Atlanta Gladiators

“I want to see how far I can push my body and I want to become the greatest version of myself.”

Jan. 5 vs. Orlando Solarbears

Mark said the best advice he can give to anyone wanting to start crossfit is to set your ego aside, be ready to learn and don’t let yourself be intimidated because it is the most friendly environment inside of fitness.

GAME FACE: Local Athletes of Jacksonville

Sports Director at

MARCELL DAREUS

NATHAN PETERMAN

The Jaguars made the biggest midseason trade in franchise history when they added two time Pro Bowler Marcell Dareus to the roster. In his first two games with the Jags, he helped the Jags slow the run game of the opposition to the tune of 116 yards on 47 carries. Dareus figures to be a big part of the top ranked defense in the NFL down the stretch.

Jacksonville product Nate Peterman took over the starting job for the Buffalo Bills. The former Bartram Trail HS star was a fifth round draft pick and played his college football at Tennessee and Pittsburgh. Peterman threw a touchdown pass in relief of Tyrod Taylor and was named the starter the following week.

TYLER SHATLEY

JAYDON MICKENS

The Jags offensive lineman might be one of the most unsung heroes of this 2017 season. Shatley, a veteran backup, has played center for three games, played left guard for a half and also played long snapper in a pinch against the Chargers for the game tying and game winning field goals. Shatley played his college football at Clemson.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are getting big efforts from little known players. That was the case in November when Jaydon Mickens returned a punt for a touchdown against Cincinnati. It was the first punt return for a touchdown by the Jags since 2015. Mickens also had a big catch the next week against the Chargers. UPLOAD YOUR EVENT TO iwantaBUZZ.com’s ONLINE CALENDAR.

LUKE COMBS -by Dara Sweatt

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Nashville star and singer/songwriter Luke Combs will play at the Florida Theatre in Jacksonville for the first time this December. The North Carolina native released his debut album on June 2, 2017 which debuted No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums chart and remained inside the Top 10 on the same chart since. Combs’ debut PLATINUM-certified smash radio single “Hurricane” set Country radio history topping both the Billboard Country Airplay chart and Mediabase chart for two consecutive weeks – rendering Combs the first debut country artist to hold a multi-week No.1 since Florida Georgia Line’s “Cruise” and the first new solo Country male artist to accomplish the feat since Blake Shelton with “Austin” in 2001. Combs made history once more when “When It Rains It Pours,” the GOLD-certified second single off his debut project, landed at No. 1 for two-weeks on Country radio; the last debut male to achieve back-to-back chart toppers off a debut album was Sam Hunt. In 2017, Combs earned nominations for CMT Awards Breakthrough Artist of the Year, CMA Award New Artist of the Year and MusicRow Breakthrough Artist/Writer of the Year. Combs has performed on NBC’s Today and ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! and received critical praise from NPR, American Songwriter, Washington Post, Billboard and more. After college at Appalachian State, Combs, a true road warrior, built his avid fan base, developing his trademark through delivering rowdy, hold-nothing-back shows. By 2014 when Combs followed his calling to Nashville, Tennessee, he had an army of fans behind him, three self-released EPs and a set list full of songs that are true, authentic and demonstrate his signature modern throwback sound.

ALLIE & THE KATS HEAD BACK TO MEMPHIS -by Jenna Martinez

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Formed in August of 2016, Allie & the Cats started as a jazz group and evolved into an original blues band that already has two accolades attached to their short life as a band. They are the 2016 and 2017 winners of the youth band portion of the IBC Challenge held annually by the First Coast Blues Society. With this achievement alone, the band has made Jacksonville music history as the first ever youth band to ever win the title and now the first to win two straight years in a row. During last year’s stay in Memphis, the band played the Stax stage covering iconic blues artists such as Coco Taylor. One of the unique values of this newer band is that they write their own music and actually enjoy it. Drummer Gabriel Pfaffman credits his love of math for his ability to write new songs quickly and Allie Rohrer admits to writing lyrics in the car sometimes. The band is very excited to represent Jacksonville this upcoming January at the home of the Blues, Memphis and are currently raising funds and preparing for their journey. Gianluis Hernandez, Evan Mayo, Allie Rohrer, Gabriel Pfaffman and Owen Ingram can be seen live December 9th at 1904 Music Hall starting at 12:00pm.

STRIKE UP A CHORD OUR MUSIC COMMUNITY CASSIDY LEE

by Dara Sweatt

You might recognize Cassidy Lee, a 21-year-old Jacksonville native, from the Duval Divas or as the lead singer of South of Savannah. She plays everywhere from Whiskey Jax (both locations) to Mudville Grill to Farmer’s Markets out in the middle of nowhere to opening for the Red Jumpsuit Apparatus at Jack Rabbits last year. Hopping on every opportunity she can, she makes her living being a local performer and although exhausting at times, her passion and love for music drives her.

FEEL

Not only does Cassidy have a gorgeous exterior, her sweet personality and soft spokenness make her an all-around wonderful person. However, when she opens her mouth to sing, you’ll get goosebumps at the angelic notes that pour out. With a voice similar to a combination of Stevie Nicks mixed with the likes of Jewel and Miranda Lambert, she mimics her 90s alternative rock and country influences in a very unique way. Cassidy’s late father was a huge key to drive to motivation and inspiration for music. From tagging along to every show he could, helping her with managment and motivating her from a young age to pursue her talent and make her dreams a reality, and essentially being Cassidy’s number one fan. Coming up next for Cassidy is releasing her brand new EP in March of 2018. Working with other writers for lyrics and musicians to help bring her unique sound together. And after a long anticipated wait, she will finally be making the move to Nashville by next summer. Before we lose this Jacksonville star to the great Music City, be sure to catch her at Cheers Park Avenue in Orange Park on December 29. Find out more at Facebook.com/CassidyLeeMusic.

NEW ROCK SOUL

by Dara Sweatt

What do you get when you take classic rock and mix it with modern soul? You get Jacksonville’s own New Rock Soul. This five-piece band, formed by bass player Paul Jackson Live, has impressive guitar shreds you can’t help but air guitar jam to, a killer bass line, keys that will take you to funky town, drums that never miss a beat and vocals that will. Blow. Your. Mind. This past year, lead singer, nineteen-year-old JaTarra hired Paul Jackson Live’s band to back her up for what they thought would be “just another gig”. JaTarra’s voice is comparable to Tina Turner, Christina Aguilera and Beyoncé. The notes she climbs to will send shivers down your spine. After that first performance together, it was no question the group was sold on naming JaTarra as their lead singer, thus giving birth to the new band: New Rock Soul. New Rock Soul’s arrangements of your favorite top hits (such as “Dangerous” by Ariana Grande and “You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC) mixed with JaTarra’s killer vocal abilities creates a wicked energy on stage. This band’s uniquely talented musicians add a little Latin spice, funky feels and jazzy vibes to every gig. The chemistry of this band on stage adds charm and gets the crowd dancing like you’ve never seen before!

REINHARD CATCHIN' A BUZZ AUSTIN Mixologist Interview by Anna Eatz Jax

Black Sheep 5 Points

What is unique about Black Sheep bar area? We focus on not what we enjoy, but what the guest would experience when we are designing our cocktails Tell us about your best-selling drink. Currently, it is the Faux Croix, which is my cocktail, but the all-time favorite is the Dusty Boot, you can’t match it you can’t touch it. It has been on the menu since we opened and that is five years. What compliments do you hear most often from your customers? How we adhere to strict quality, we are never going to put out a bad product, either in our food or our drinks. That’s what people enjoy and look for when they come here. When customers are having a perfect time at your business what are they doing? They usually order small plates and hang out with friends unwinding from the day. We have a very active happy hour crowd that stops in after work, especially during the week. We also have the rooftop bar that people gravitate to when the weather is right. It is very popular; we serve drinks as well as a full menu, it is a well thought out space. What do you want more people to know about your business? I feel we have a good reputation. We have been around for so long that we just love and appreciate our customers, we are a very friendly because we genuinely enjoy coming into work.

MIXOLOGY: Dusty Boot

INGREDIENTS • 1.5 oz Old Forester Bourbon • House Sour mix = ¾ fresh pressed lemon, ½ oz fresh pressed lime, ¾ oz simple syrup • 2 dashes of Jerry Thomas bitters

Shake well, rim the glass with equal parts cracked black pepper and smoked sea salt. This cocktail is everything Austin told me it was. Never a Bourbon fan, I do believe I have been converted.

BEER BUZZED By Linda Johnson

Dog Rose Brewing The area’s newest brewery, Dog Rose Brewing, offers a spacious, open tap room and might be described as casualupscale. The former art gallery property has been transformed into a comfortable, intimate, yet friendly and interactive local bar, with beers that will appeal to any type of palate. Beer is available in standard 16-ounce, 10-ounce, or 5-ounce servings, which allow for multiple tastings. And, for those who just aren’t into beer, there is a nice selection of wines by the glass, including White, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Malbec, and Cabernet Sauvignon. Soft drinks are also available. Dog Rose Brewing is located at 77 Bridge St., in the Lincolnville area of St. Augustine, just off the main downtown core, behind the Lightner Museum. The tap room is open daily, at 11 a.m. Look for a Grand Opening celebration soon.

DECEMBER HOROSCOPE

by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

ARIES (March 21- April 19)

This could be a great holiday season for you, Aries, but you will have to pump the brakes on the me-me-me attitude. If you have any ability to show compassion and be concerned with your mate or crush, this month could be one for the ages.

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22)

It seems you have been too overwhelmed and it’s affecting your love life. You need to start weeding out your boring friends and make more time for fun ones and your mate or the person you have been crushing on.

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21)

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20)

According to the Stars, it’s a good month to show off your flirty side Scorpio. Honestly, I think every day is a good day to flirt it up. Smile. Wink. Hug. Six-shooter. Strut. Pick-up lines. Whatever works. They’re all great.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)

This month you will declare your unconditional love for that special person in your life. Don’t have one? Well, then you are about to do something foolish, and fall head-over-heels for someone real soon. Makes for a fun month.

CANCER (June 22 – July 22)

Looks like love will find you this month, but it will be from someone a long distance away. This is good twofold. First, you found someone. Second, due to the distance there is no awkward gift exchange expected. Double win.

LEO (July 23 – August 22)

Rumor has it that your fifth house of romance is lining up for a very fun and spicy month for you Leo. So crank it up to extra-spicy and go hang out by some mistletoe and see what sparks you can create.

This time of year brings about travel for you; whether it’s off to see family or a vacation with your mate. Unfortunately, with Mercury in retrograde this will bring about several travel snafus to you this Holiday season. I’d suggest rearranging your plans.

The local paper’s horoscope said, “Too much thinking could stump your efforts in asking someone you’ve been admiring out.” Wow. For once, I completely agree with the competitor horoscope. Less thinking and more doing for you Virgo.

When it comes to gift-giving this month, take advice from my friend Stewie Griffin, “I come bearing a gift. I’ll give you a hint. It’s in my diaper and it’s not a toaster.” So be like Stewie and give a homemade gift. It shows you care more.

Your current mate or crush is going to create extra stress for you this month. It’s time to move on to something better. No better time than the Holiday season to tell that person you’re done with them. Your sex appeal is off the charts this month with one of your many houses of passion & romance in Libra. So, let’s fire up the romance and get the object of your affection to notice you and kick off the new year the right way. So my competitor horoscope stated, “Communication this month will be good with people you normally try to avoid.” There is a reason you avoid those people. They annoy you. If you feel like being annoyed, then take their advice and not mine.

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22)

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21)

CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19)

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18)

PISCES (February 19 – March 20)
