The Jacksonville Landing The Jacksonville Landing will be decking the halls and ringing in the holiday season all month long with two amazing ongoing family-friendly events! Starting Saturday, November 28 enjoy Synchronized Nightly Tree Light Shows every hour, on the hour through New Year’s Eve, featuring all new light synchronization and music for the 2015 season! The Landing’s 56-foot tall tree comes to life to the sounds of your favorite holiday songs each evening, performing a 10-minute synchronized light show with more than 78,000 sparkling L.E.D. lights. Each show is free and open to the public. The shows take place Sunday through Thursday 6 p.m. – 9 p.m. (four shows each night) and Friday and Saturday 6 p.m. – midnight (seven shows each night). Don’t miss the 2015 Holiday on the River Concert Series featuring daily and evening live performances by local schools, churches and dance groups. Performances begin on Wednesday, December 2 and end on Monday, December 21. Why do you think the story of Rudolph continues to be so popular after so many years?

“It’s a story about friendship, acceptance and love. All of these things are important to remember during the holidays.

What do you find exciting about being a part of this production?

“The show is just so much fun to be in. It’s a joy to perform and the cast and crew are phenomenal.”

What is the experience like portraying characters that were originally presented as clay animation?

“We’ve remained very faithful to the classic film. The rehearsal process included exploring how the characters sound and what they’re saying. The original has a youthful energy that we bring to life as well.”

How many actors are cast in the production? “I would estimate about 20.”

What do you believe is the biggest lesson that can be taken away from the story of Rudolph?

“The production actually works with the National Bullying Prevention Center. Since bullying is a big theme in the production, the lesson is that we all have unique qualities that make us special and that should be celebrated.”

What can an audience member expect?

“Expect to see the original television special brought to life with fun characters and lots of singing and dancing.” 18

Camp topics include: “Nutcracker,” with special guests Florida Ballet “The Nutcracker” cast members; “Tinkering with Toys,” where campers design, build and engineer their own toys; “Frozen Fun,” where campers engage in fun experiments and learn the science behind snow; “Candy Chemistry,” which involved exploring the science involved in making everyone’s favorite candies; “Winter Galaxy,” where campers investigate the galaxy’s coldest spots and conduct chilly experiments; and “Time Traveling Engineers”, which allow campers to travel through time as we examine the best engineering discoveries made to date. BUZZ: When did you find an interest in cooking? RR: I have had an interest in it as long as I can remember. Growing up, both of my grandmothers baked all the time, and my mom is a great cook. BUZZ: What is your most memorable kitchen experience? RR: The first time my husband saw me work. The look on his face of how proud he is of me. That will always stick with me. BUZZ: Do you have a specialty dish that your family and friends always want you to make? RR: I don’t have a signature dish, but I get asked to make cheesecakes often. BUZZ: Favorite kitchen tool: RR: My mixer, it’s my workhorse; I would be lost without it. BUZZ: Most unusual dish you have eaten: RR: A Filet-o-Fish sandwich at McDonalds in Taipei, Taiwan; not sure what was in it, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t fish.

BUZZ: Favorite Celebrity Chef: RR: I love Elizabeth Falkner . BUZZ: What are your favorite ingredients to use when cooking? RR: I love sweet and savory things together, the unexpected, out-of-the-box type of desserts. I’m a huge fan of using spices and teas from Spice and Tea Exchange, located in St Augustine. BUZZ: What food is your greatest indulgence? RR: I love seafood! I grew up in New England, in southeastern Massachusetts. My family had a boat so we spent summers fishing and catching lobsters. Seafood will always remind me of home and my childhood. Therefore, I would say that lobster is my guilty pleasure. BUZZ: Do you cook on your off time? RR: My specialty is baking, so really, I prefer someone else cooking for me. With all the great restaurants in downtown St. Augustine, can you blame me? BUZZ: Hobbies? RR: I don’t really have any hobbies. I prefer spending my free time with my kids and my husband. Not much time for hobbies with 5 kids!

DIRECTIONS Preheat the oven to 350. Cream the shortening and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in molasses and egg. In a separate bowl, combine flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon and salt. Add to cream mixture, alternating with hot water and beating well after each addition. Pour into 13 x 9 baking pan and bake for 25- 30 minutes.

VINA GETS A SECOND CHANCE

Local Shelter Finds Home for Heartworm-Positive Dog at MEGA Adoption Event

The Okefenokee Humane Society brought Vina to October’s MEGA Adoption with high hopes that a special family would look past her serious health condition. She was Heartworm positive, but what a sweet angel of a dog she was, calm and gentle as thousands passed her, laying trapped for the weekend in her cramped cage. After sharing Vina’s plight on the First Coast No More Homeless Pets (FCNMHP) Facebook page, one amazing donor and animal advocate offered to pay for the nearly $400 of Heartworm treatment necessary for Vina to survive. With this selfless act, Wayne Carmichael gave Vina a fighting chance for happiness in life. His only request was that FCNMHP and the Okefenokee Humane Society advertised that her heartworm treatment was completely paid for, to give her a better shot at adoption.

Their search ended when they met Vina. “We saw Vina sad, laying in her crate – I don’t know, there was just something special about her,” said Joy. “We’re going to teach her how to get on the couch and hang out with us,” remarked Larry, who could barely hold back his enthusiasm. The next day, Joy brought Vina into FCNMHP to redeem the donated

heartworm treatment, and now Vina is doing incredibly well with her new family. The MEGA Adoption events, held quarterly every year, are a blessing to those dogs and cats that need a second chance, or an act of extraordinary kindness, so that they can love and be loved once and for all. Many who have adopted pets will tell you that you really cannot understand the kind of unspoken bond of love and trust that is formed between adopted pets and their new owners. The mission of First Coast No More Homeless Pets is to end the needless killing of cats and dogs in shelters. Several programs offering free or lowcost spay/neuter surgeries are available to First Coast residents. Since 2002, more than 140,000 dogs and cats have been sterilized and benefited from our programs. The euthanasia rate in Jacksonville has been reduced by 95%. FCNMHP mentors organizations across the country to help them start similar programs, saving animals nationwide. FCNMHP hosts Mega Adoption Events, provides funds for medically injured animals, provides outreach programs, and runs the Jacksonville Pet Food Bank. www.fcnmhp.org

SIERRA NEVADA CELEBRATION ALE BRINED ROASTED TURKEY BREAST

One 2-3 lb turkey breast 3 Bottles Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale ¼ cup kosher salt 6 rosemary sprigs 4 sage leaves 3 bay leaves 1 coarsely chopped onion 1 tsp fresh ground black pepper

Place turkey breast in a very large, non-reactive bowl. In saucepan, heat Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale and remaining ingredients until salt is dissolved. Allow to cool slightly. Pour over turkey breast. If necessary, add just enough water to cover turkey. Cover and marinate in refrigerator for 24 hours. Drain turkey, discarding brine. Place turkey breast on rack in a shallow roasting

pan. Roast in a 325 degree oven for 45 minutes. Brush with glaze. Return to oven for 30 minutes. Brush with glaze. Return to oven for 15 to 45 minutes or until juices run clear and turkey is no longer pink (170 degree F). Cover with foil and let stand for 10 to 15 minutes before carving.

2/3 cup Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale 1/4 cup apple cider vinegar 3 sage leaves 2 rosemary sprigs 1/2 tsp fresh ground black pepper 2 Tbs unsalted butter

Since the release of his first album in 2004, Matisyahu has become the face of American reggae. Matisyahu draws musical influence from an eclectic mix of artists. This is evident in all his work, as he is unparalleled in regards to his authenticity as

WARREN WOLF an artist. Matisyahu blends together components of reggae, rap, pop, and hip-hop which clearly has attracted a loyal fan base. In many of his songs, Matisyahu includes lyrics in Hebrew and Yiddish, an homage to his Jewish roots. With one performance Friday and one Saturday, Matisyahu’s “Festival of Light” tour serves as a celebration of the ten-year anniversary of his breakthrough album “Live at Stubb’s.” The concert will feature many songs from the album, and is suitable for fans of all ages.

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Warren Wolf has been studying music since the age of three, with a focus on all genres of music including classical and ragtime. Wolf spent his adolescence learning from various members of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra before enrolling at the Berklee College of Music in Boston. During his time at Berklee, Wolf focused on his growth particularly in jazz. He had the opportunity to work with noteworthy artists such as Jeremy Pelt and Rashawn Ross. Before long, he began booking gigs all around Boston and co-led a quintet with Jason Palmer.

Upon graduating, Wolf went on to teach at Berklee. He shared his knowledge of percussion, drums and vibraphone with students and continued to perform around the Boston area. Jacksonville is a very small, large city. A lot of people in the restaurant and bar industry know each other, so you can always run into someone you know when you go out late at night.

We’ll have rotating cocktails on tap. Our plan is to update them seasonally, though we might change those out weekly if they prove to be popular. Those will be $5 during our happy hour, every day. During our late-night happy hour, we’ll offer a secret cocktail and food menu. You’ll have to stop by on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night to see what that’s all about.

We have gin, rum and vodka from the St. Augustine Distillery, Palm Ridge Reserve whiskey out of Umatilla, Gunnar’s Vodka from Palm Coast and Carve Vodka from right here in Jacksonville. And, of course, we have local beers from Aardwolf, Intuition, Bold City and Green Room.

Tell us about your craft cocktail-ing experience. I’m extremely passionate about where craft cocktails are going in Jacksonville. I’ve been working locally in the craft cocktail scene for the last five years. I came from Bistro Aix at a time when they were just transitioning toward that direction. Then, worked at Grape & Grain Exchange where I learned the finesse needed to create a great craft cocktail. I came back to Aix to launch their craft cocktail program, and now it’s awesome to be here

What does your staff enjoy the most about working here? I would say they probably enjoy the opportunity to learn about and create high-quality cocktails, and to work in a high-quality restaurant. A lot of my bartenders are new to the higher-end side of bartending and food service. It’s fun to teach them how to do those things well. I was lucky enough to grow up in the restaurant industry with great managers, and I like sharing what I’ve learned with my bartenders.

The Jacksonville resident and former Jacksonville University golfer won the first time in his PGA Tour career in November. Knox won the WGC-HSBC Champions event and beat out some of the best golfers in the world. The victory won Knox a lot of money, but also got him an invite to the 2016 Masters. Knox is from Scotland and does have five professional wins, but this was his first on the PGA Tour.

The amateur golfer signed a letter of intent in November to play college golf at West Florida. Earlier this year, Berman won the prestigious AJGA President’s Leadership Award. Berman also does her own local charity work at various events called “hitting it with Hannah.” She will help raise money for charity by hitting drives for players. Berman attends high school at Ponte Vedra.

The star running back has had another sensational season and that included a huge three-touchdown game and over 200 yards rushing in a win over LSU.
