She is a graduate of Leadership St. Johns and volunteers her time with the American Fundraising Professionals.
First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross
THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON I’VE INTERVIEWED THIS MONTH She’s an author, FSU professor, and diehard Seminoles fan. But Diane Roberts is also conflicted about her lifelong love for college football. And in the fascinating new book, “Tribal: College Football and the Secret Heart of America,” Roberts explores the dark underside of the various controversies plaguing college athletics. Big-time college sports, Roberts writes, has racist and sexist underpinnings and reveals America’s disturbing obsession with violence, particularly in the South.
“Roberts explores the dark underside of the various controversies plaguing college athletics.” It’s a great read for anyone who loves the sport, but is concerned about the issues that continue to dominate the headlines. Be sure to tune into First Coast Connect every weekday morning at 9 a.m. on 89.9 FM to hear from this area’s most compelling newsmakers!

Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer: Interviewee: Sarah Miller-Crews (Rudolph) Thrasher-Horne Center • Dec. 13
Interview by Cory Leschel
Why do you think the story of Rudolph continues to be so popular after so many years?
“It’s a story about friendship, acceptance and love. All of these things are important to remember during the holidays.
What do you find exciting about being a part of this production?
“The show is just so much fun to be in. It’s a joy to perform and the cast and crew are phenomenal.”
What is the experience like portraying characters that were originally presented as clay animation?
“We’ve remained very faithful to the classic film. The rehearsal process included exploring how the characters sound and what they’re saying. The original has a youthful energy that we bring to life as well.”
How many actors are cast in the production? “I would estimate about 20.”
What do you believe is the biggest lesson that can be taken away from the story of Rudolph?
“The production actually works with the National Bullying Prevention Center. Since bullying is a big theme in the production, the lesson is that we all have unique qualities that make us special and that should be celebrated.”
What can an audience member expect?
“Expect to see the original television special brought to life with fun characters and lots of singing and dancing.” 18

She offered a sample of this month’s Barrel Wine from the Cooper’s Hawk Winery, and brought it to our table while we perused the creative and slightly eclectic menu. (Another nice touch for my taste buds!) After retrieving a gloriously grapey glass for me, Tasha explained that each menu item has a red BIN number next to it, indicating the perfect wine pairing. BUZZ: When did you find an interest in cooking? RR: I have had an interest in it as long as I can remember. Growing up, both of my grandmothers baked all the time, and my mom is a great cook. BUZZ: What is your most memorable kitchen experience? RR: The first time my husband saw me work. The look on his face of how proud he is of me. That will always stick with me. BUZZ: Do you have a specialty dish that your family and friends always want you to make? RR: I don’t have a signature dish, but I get asked to make cheesecakes often. BUZZ: Favorite kitchen tool: RR: My mixer, it’s my workhorse; I would be lost without it. BUZZ: Most unusual dish you have eaten: RR: A Filet-o-Fish sandwich at McDonalds in Taipei, Taiwan; not sure what was in it, but I’m pretty sure it wasn’t fish.
BUZZ: Favorite Celebrity Chef: RR: I love Elizabeth Falkner . BUZZ: What are your favorite ingredients to use when cooking? RR: I love sweet and savory things together, the unexpected, out-of-the-box type of desserts. I’m a huge fan of using spices and teas from Spice and Tea Exchange, located in St Augustine. BUZZ: What food is your greatest indulgence? RR: I love seafood! I grew up in New England, in southeastern Massachusetts. My family had a boat so we spent summers fishing and catching lobsters. Seafood will always remind me of home and my childhood. Therefore, I would say that lobster is my guilty pleasure. BUZZ: Do you cook on your off time? RR: My specialty is baking, so really, I prefer someone else cooking for me. With all the great restaurants in downtown St. Augustine, can you blame me? BUZZ: Hobbies? RR: I don’t really have any hobbies. I prefer spending my free time with my kids and my husband. Not much time for hobbies with 5 kids!

VINA GETS A SECOND CHANCE
Local Shelter Finds Home for Heartworm-Positive Dog at MEGA Adoption Event
The Okefenokee Humane Society brought Vina to October’s MEGA Adoption with high hopes that a special family would look past her serious health condition. She was Heartworm positive, but what a sweet angel of a dog she was, calm and gentle as thousands passed her, laying trapped for the weekend in her cramped cage. After sharing Vina’s plight on the First Coast No More Homeless Pets (FCNMHP) Facebook page, one amazing donor and animal advocate offered to pay for the nearly $400 of Heartworm treatment necessary for Vina to survive. With this selfless act, Wayne Carmichael gave Vina a fighting chance for happiness in life. His only request was that FCNMHP and the Okefenokee Humane Society advertised that her heartworm treatment was completely paid for, to give her a better shot at adoption.
With this selfless act, Wayne Carmichael gave Vina a fighting chance for happiness in life. On Sunday, October 11, Joy Parrish and her children Larry, Christian, and Callie came to the Jacksonville Fairgrounds in search of the perfect family pet. Their search ended when they met Vina. “We saw Vina sad, laying in her crate – I don’t know, there was just something special about her,” said Joy. “We’re going to teach her how to get on the couch and hang out with us,” remarked Larry, who could barely hold back his enthusiasm. The next day, Joy brought Vina into FCNMHP to redeem the donated
heartworm treatment, and now Vina is doing incredibly well with her new family. The MEGA Adoption events, held quarterly every year, are a blessing to those dogs and cats that need a second chance, or an act of extraordinary kindness, so that they can love and be loved once and for all. Many who have adopted pets will tell you that you really cannot understand the kind of unspoken bond of love and trust that is formed between adopted pets and their new owners. The mission of First Coast No More Homeless Pets is to end the needless killing of cats and dogs in shelters. Several programs offering free or lowcost spay/neuter surgeries are available to First Coast residents. Since 2002, more than 140,000 dogs and cats have been sterilized and benefited from our programs. The euthanasia rate in Jacksonville has been reduced by 95%. FCNMHP mentors organizations across the country to help them start similar programs, saving animals nationwide. FCNMHP hosts Mega Adoption Events, provides funds for medically injured animals, provides outreach programs, and runs the Jacksonville Pet Food Bank. www.fcnmhp.org
The mission of First Coast No More Homeless Pets is to end the needless killing of cats and dogs in shelters. When you adopt a pet, you actually save two lives – the one you adopt, and the one that takes its place.

Cuisine Looking for a beer that screams “Happy Holidaze”? Grab yourself some Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale. With hints of pine and citrus, this seasonal ale is a refreshing change from the normal seasonal holiday beer. The piney-ness just begged me to do something with turkey (well, it IS holiday time!). This Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale Brined Roasted Turkey Breast shines like a golden ornament; the brine will give you the best, moist, most flavorful turkey breast you’ve ever had. The glaze gives the skin a beautiful color and crispness. This will be an entrée you’ll want to make all year round!

Dec. 31 Freebird Live • FreebirdLive.com
Blazing tempos, outlaw attitude, foot-stomping intensity, acoustic wizardry – these things all accurately describe Grandpa’s Cough Medicine’s tongue-in-cheek approach to bluegrass music. They include humor and dark subject matter in their lyrics, yet are fully capable of letting their musicianship do the talking with instrumental compositions. The trio’s seemingly simple combination of flat-picked guitar, Scruggs style banjo, upright bass and two vocals creates a sound so huge, that it can make a six piece band blush. 32

IL DESCO
Interview by Monica Stouder
When did you open? November 12, 2015 When is Happy Hour?
at Il Desco, to create this program. I hope Il Desco adds to the wealth of craft cocktails around Jacksonville. What do you love most about Jacksonville’s nightlife?
Daily from 3:30 – 6:30 p.m. We also offer a late-night happy hour, ThursdaySaturday, 11 p.m. – 2 a.m.
Jacksonville is a very small, large city. A lot of people in the restaurant and bar industry know each other, so you can always run into someone you know when you go out late at night.
Ingredients Fernet-Branca- 1.5 oz
What kind of weekly drink specials do you all offer?
Do you serve any local liquors or brews?
We’ll have rotating cocktails on tap. Our plan is to update them seasonally, though we might change those out weekly if they prove to be popular. Those will be $5 during our happy hour, every day. During our late-night happy hour, we’ll offer a secret cocktail and food menu. You’ll have to stop by on a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night to see what that’s all about.
We have gin, rum and vodka from the St. Augustine Distillery, Palm Ridge Reserve whiskey out of Umatilla, Gunnar’s Vodka from Palm Coast and Carve Vodka from right here in Jacksonville. And, of course, we have local beers from Aardwolf, Intuition, Bold City and Green Room.
Berentzen Apple Liqueur- .75 oz
Tell us about your craft cocktail-ing experience. I’m extremely passionate about where craft cocktails are going in Jacksonville. I’ve been working locally in the craft cocktail scene for the last five years. I came from Bistro Aix at a time when they were just transitioning toward that direction. Then, worked at Grape & Grain Exchange where I learned the finesse needed to create a great craft cocktail. I came back to Aix to launch their craft cocktail program, and now it’s awesome to be here
What does your staff enjoy the most about working here? I would say they probably enjoy the opportunity to learn about and create high-quality cocktails, and to work in a high-quality restaurant. A lot of my bartenders are new to the higher-end side of bartending and food service. It’s fun to teach them how to do those things well. I was lucky enough to grow up in the restaurant industry with great managers, and I like sharing what I’ve learned with my bartenders.
Amaro Meletti- .75 oz Fresh lime juice- .75oz Turbinado sugar- .5 oz Procedure: Add all ingredients to a shaker with ice in it. Shake vigorously for 20-30 seconds. Strain over ice in a coup glass. Garnish with a lime peel.

Aries (March 21- April 19) Normally reserved and independent, this month you’re going to feel the pressure to “couple up.” This could be a foreseeable train wreck, but maybe you’ll be able to keep an open mind and make a relationship last this time.
Libra (September 23 – October 22) The Taurus full moon will bring about massive change. With this could bring in huge changes in your love life, such as pregnancy or moving in together. Some will find this positive, while others, well… it could be a lifelong mistake.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20) A lot of love energy is coming your way this month; maybe even enough to find “the One.” Now don’t freak out if they are not as perfect as you think, most people never are – especially ones falling for you.
Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) Your desire to control things will steer its ugly head this month. Instead of just having fun this holiday season, you will force love down your mate’s throat; to the point where they have no choice but to be repulsed. Let’s just calm it down.
Gemini (May 21 – June 21) You’re moving things to a new level. Single or committed, Gemini will find their love life moving to a deeper level. If you are not ready for this, I’d be prepared to kiss all those things you used to enjoy with your friends goodbye. I hear compromise is a lot of fun. Cancer (June 22 – July 22) You may be in the mood for love this month, but your busy schedule will prevent you from having any. At least this way you have a built-in excuse as to why; much better than previously-used lame justifications. Leo (July 23 – August 22) With retrograde Neptune in your relationship sign of Aquarius, you will be pulled to an old flame this month. They’re going to seem better than ever, and bring back some good memories. There is a reason they’re an old flame and not a current one; be prepared for regret. Virgo (August 23 – September 22) With Mars visiting your sign this month, it brings with it boldness and sex appeal. Now, I should probably explain what sex appeal is since you have never had this sensation, but that wouldn’t be any fun. Things will be intense this month. Thus, with great power comes… you know the rest.

WHAT SHOULD DO IF I HAVE A SMALL TRAFFIC CRASH AND NOBODY IS AROUND?
Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21 Whether you’ve been lonely or in a bad romance lately, you are breaking out of your funk. Feeling brave and confident, it’s time to strike up a conversation with that crush that’s been on your mind lately. Sink or swim, who cares - it’s not like you have anything else going on.
Stop and look for any damage. If the crash results in any damage and the vehicle or property is unattended, you must locate or notify the owner of the property or “attach securely in a conspicuous place in or on the vehicle or other property a written notice giving your name, address, registration number of your vehicle” and “notify the nearest office of …police.” (s. 316.063, Fla. Stat.)
Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) Plenty of fireworks this month for you. Sadly, it’s not a steamy romance I am referring to – more like a total train wreck showing at the company holiday party or being a complete jerk at the family get-together. Congrats on being an A-1 butthole this Christmas season; at least you didn’t go unnoticed.
WHAT IF SOMEBODY IS IN THE VEHICLE (OR OTHER PROPERTY IS ATTENDED)?
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) Your fierce independence may fall by the wayside this month. Oh no, you may actually rely on someone else to lending a helping hand. What a concept, huh? People could actually want to help you out. I’m shocked, too. Pisces (February 19 – March 20) I see you setting some long-term goals this month. Apparently you want to get a jump on everyone else on those New Year’s resolutions. Way to be first at something for once, even though it really doesn’t matter.
You must “immediately stop…at the scene of such crash or as close thereto as possible, and shall forthwith return to, and in every event shall remain at, the scene of the crash” to determine if anyone is injured, and provide the information listed above. (s. 316.061, Fla. Stat.)
WHAT IF SOMEONE IS INJURED? You have a duty to stop, stay, and render aid, and provide your driver information to an investigating officer. (s. 316.062, Fla. Stat.)
