The Most Interesting Person I’ve Interviewed This Month Actually, it was two people!

First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross

On January 4, 2015, Shiloh Metropolitan Baptist Church in Jacksonville – a predominantly black church – merged with Ridgewood Baptist Church in Orange Park. Ridgewood’s congregation is mostly white.

Ridgewood had been struggling financially, so Shiloh pastor H.B Charles, Jr., who is black, along with Ridgewood pastor Michael Clifford, who is white, decided to join forces and blend their congregations.

Habitat for Humanity of Jacksonville, Inc. (HabiJax) HabiJax.org Habitat for Humanity of Jacksonville, also known as HabiJax, was founded in 1988 and has become the largest nonprofit affordable housing provider in Duval County. HabiJax helps improve urban core neighborhoods in Jacksonville and has provided homeownership opportunities and other housing services to more than 2,000 families.

UCOM UrbanServ Inc UCOMJax.org

Founded in 1979, UCOM UrbanServ has been fighting against hunger and poverty on the Southside of Jacksonville. In addition to operating a food pantry and CNA scholarship program, UCOM also partners with Aging True to provide Meals on Wheels for 45-50 homebound senior citizens each day.

Sulzbacher Beaches Clinic SulzbacherCenter.org

The mission of the Sulzbacher Center is to empower homeless and at-risk women, children and men through health, housing and income services, thereby restoring hope and self-sufficiency. The Center’s vision is to end homelessness one person at a time. The Sulzbacher Beaches Clinic provides healthcare services that are often difficult to access by the homeless, uninsured, and those living below the poverty level in our community. The church merger has generated an outpouring of enthusiasm and goodwill, say both men. “Honestly,” says Clark, “while people have made a lot out of this being a biracial congregation, the truth is we’re not really focused on that. We are just excited to join together to share our faith.” Make sure to keep listening to First Coast Connect every weekday morning at 9 a.m. on WJCT 89.9 FM to hear from the most compelling newsmakers of the First Coast!

A Leader with a Servant’s Heart

DR. DALE WHITAKER

Orthopaedic Surgeon Jacksonville Orthopaedic Institute

BUZZ: Was it always your goal to become an orthopaedic surgeon? Tell us about your journey.

Dr. W: “I am going to be an orthopaedic

surgeon” was my quote in the high school paper my senior year. I do believe that God has a plan for all of us. Looking back, I feel blessed to have been shown my calling at an early age. My favorite patient population is my parents’ generation: older, wiser, experienced, caring and respectful. I find that I am humbled by their gratefulness.

BUZZ: You were one of the leaders recognized at the Legacy of Leaders dinner and in the Portrait of Leadership Gallery that was held at Ocean 60. What does being a leader mean to you? Dr. W: The Legacy of Leaders honor surprised me. This made me realize that we unknowingly can create a lasting impression on everyone we meet. Your faith, character, morals, decision-making and compassion are all on display. BUZZ: What advice would you leave future leaders? Dr. W: I view leadership as an opportunity to serve. ne of our own at Buzz Magazine took over the plaza lobby at 1301 Riverplace Boulevard at the end of January. Todd Rykaczewski is showcasing his talents and once-hidden art for the first time. The plaza lobby provides a view of historic San Marco, yet your eyes are drawn into the fresh luminescence of this unique artist. Rykaczewski describes his style as embellishing modern impressionism through his poetic eyes. By mixing multiple mediums, he creates one-of-a-kind pieces that look different at all angles. Although this is a limited collection, Rykaczewski has more to share through his website WordRevolt.com. Not only can you find his visual art online, his literary works that live on a canvas of their own are also available.

“Art was never the plan,” said Rykaczewski, “until I saw the power of shared emotion.”

WHITE

Jan. 26 – Apr. 26 Museum of Contemporary Art MOCAjacksonville.org

Feb. 4. 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. The Cummer Museum of Arts and Gardens CummerMuseum.org

Often seen as neutral, as background, or even as the absence of color, white emerges time and time again as a coconspirator in some of the most revolutionary works of art of the modern and contemporary period, beginning with one masterpiece of the modern avant-garde— Kazimir Malevich’s iconic painting, White on White (1918). Nearly a century after this Suprematist masterpiece was created, MOCA Jacksonville’s WHITE exhibition charts the pivotal role of this under-explored protagonist in the making of contemporary art history. The exhibition focuses on iconic works of art that cast a spotlight on white’s role as inspiration, color, material, and even conceptual premise in objects spanning diverse media such as painting, photography, sculpture and installation.

Join Cummelia and FOCUS for an art-filled luncheon featuring a lecture and tour of Rothko to Richter: Mark-Making in Abstract Painting from the Collection of Preston H. Haskell, organized by the Princeton University Art Museum. Museum Director Hope McMath will lead guests on a journey through the art of abstract expressionism before touring the Rothko to Richter exhibition and the Cummer’s Stein Gallery with Chief Curator Holly Keris. Registration is required.

Players By The Sea Players by the Sea presents uplifting human drama in “A Lesson Before Dying” In the Deep South in 1948, Jefferson, a young black man, is unjustly convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Based on the 1993 Pulitzer Prize-nominated novel by Ernest Gaines, “A Lesson Before Dying” comes to the main stage at Players by the Sea February 13-28. This powerful and poignant dramatization by Romulus Linney shows how Jefferson, brutalized and dehumanized by white authorities, learns to face his executioners with courage and dignity. He is helped by Grant Wiggins, a black school teacher, who has almost given in to despair at the poverty and prejudice that surround him. Jefferson’s inspiring transformation redeems and gives hope to an entire community. Making his directing debut at Players by the Sea, Brian Grant leads an outstanding cast, with Jerome Raikett as Jefferson and Larry Knight as Grant Wiggins. Tony Philips plays Miss Emma, Jefferson’s indomitable grandmother. Kristian Jackson is Vivian, the woman who pushes Grant to stay in the South and fight for change. Joseph Stearman is the sheriff and Mike Van Dyke is his sympathetic deputy. Peter Jackson plays a black preacher who fears that spiritual values may be lost in the quest for social progress. The production team includes Assistant Directors Megan Georgeo and Erik Anderson, and Lighting Designer Nicole Kosnick. For information and tickets, call (904) 249-0289 or visit PlayersByTheSea.org. Based on an episode from Miguel de Cervantes’ famous novel, “Don Quixote de la Mancha,” the story follows its title hero, a middle-aged country gentleman absorbed with tales of chivalry, who sets out to defend virtue and punish those who violate the code of honor. This is a dance-packed feast of comedy, drama, romance, intrigue, betrayal and fantasy, and Minkus’ rousing score endows each scene with rich atmosphere.

For the first time together on stage, see professional dancers from “Dancing with the Stars,” “So You Think You Can Dance” and dance champions from around the world compete with one another for top prize! Using electronic voting remotes, the audience will become part of the show and vote for their favorite couple.

During the Let’s Go Science Show, kids learn science concepts through impressive and memorable demonstrations. They learn about air pressure, figure out flight, observe awesome optical illusions, are shocked by static electricity, see experiments with falling masses, grasp gyroscopic properties, and get a handle on the scientific method.

Theater in the River City By Tamara McClaran, Northeast Florida Theater Enthusiast

Lee Hamby Brings “Grease” to Life at Amelia Community Theatre The T-Birds and Pink Ladies are headed to Fernandina Beach! The popular musical “Grease” runs Feb. 12-18 at Amelia Community Theatre. Lee Hamby, who directed the theater’s sold-out run of “Hair” last summer, is directing with musical direction and choreography by Alex Rodriguez. The musical follows the students at fictional Rydell High and features an early 1950s rock and roll score. “I love ‘Grease’ – it’s one of those shows people love,” Hamby said. “It’s fun and nostalgic, and it makes me think of high school.” The Jacksonville native and Douglas Anderson School of the Arts graduate spent nearly two decades working as a professional actor performing in national tours, regional theaters and dinner theaters. Hamby has appeared in numerous productions of “Grease,” playing the role of Roger in Europe and locally at the Alhambra. At Amelia Community Theatre, Hamby is the show’s director, costumer and set designer. “Grease” will feature Hamby’s signature design panache, but he says it wouldn’t be possible without the incredible support he has received from the theater’s dedicated volunteers. “The set for this show is truly spectacular,” Hamby said. “The volunteers of this community theater are so loving and passionate about what they do and they have done a wonderful job of bringing my vision to life.” Hamby also appreciates the dedication demonstrated by his 17-member cast. “The cast is packed with talent,” he said. “This is a beautiful theater. I am so happy people are coming here to do a show.” 18

26.2 with DONNA The National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer was established in 2008 by Donna Deegan, three-time breast cancer survivor and founder of The Donna Foundation. The Donna Foundation is a nonprofit organization formed to raise money exclusively for those on the First Coast living with breast cancer.

HOW DID THE RACE GET STARTED? In 2008, shortly after my third diagnosis, the Foundation partnered with Olympic marathoner Jeff Galloway and the Mayo Clinic to launch 26.2 with DONNA. We were already raising funds for The Donna Foundation and racing other events, but wanted to create an event of our own and there was no traditional marathon event for breast cancer. We wanted the running world to look to Jacksonville and 26.2 with DONNA as the Mecca for this wonderful cause!

WHERE DO THE FUNDS RAISED FROM THE RACE GO?

18. FEEL THE LOVE Rudimental

26.2 with DONNA is the only marathon in the U.S. dedicated to breast cancer research and care. Funds go to the Mayo Clinic for bench top breast cancer research, which has resulted in curing people every day, and to The Donna Foundation to provide financial assistance to those with breast cancer.

HOW HAS CANCER AFFECTED YOU PERSONALLY AND HOW YOU APPROACH A HURDLE LIKE A MARATHON? Each time I’ve dealt with cancer, it’s moved me forward in some way: as an advocate, a wife and mother, and hopefully as a human. After my third diagnosis, which was a metastasis to my left lung, I made the very conscious decision to live life in a different way. I learned to meditate to still my mind, put better things in my body, and eventually made a career change to focus more on my work as a health advocate. I made a choice then, and now, to look through a lens of love rather than fear and anger.

First is picking is the right race. Second is training. There is a race for everyone! You can pick a distance from a 5k, relay, half or full marathon. I have personally done the full marathon each year and I utilize the Jeff Galloway Training Program. Jeff Galloway Training is the official training program for 26.2 with DONNA. The program is made for all levels of runners, from beginning runners to Boston qualifiers. This low-mileage program incorporates a Run Walk Run method that helps eliminate injury and is flexible enough to accommodate those training who have families and a life! Sound Off With Donna Deegan Continued WHAT’S THE ONE THING PEOPLE DON’T KNOW ABOUT THE RACE/ORGANIZATION? Mayo Clinic’s Dr. Edith Perez was ranked in the top 10 of medical specialists in the research and treatment of breast cancer. Proceeds from 26.2 with DONNA support her Translational Genomics Research Project at the Mayo Clinic. Funds from the race are key to maintaining this team, to developing the sophisticated new tools needed to “pick apart” the detailed workings of cancer cells, and to figuring out how to apply this new knowledge. As a result of breast cancer discoveries made possible by support from 26.2 with DONNA, exciting new clinical and translational advances are also being made in other areas, including lung, kidney and thyroid cancer.

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR PEOPLE TO GET INVOLVED IN THE RACE? This race means so much for so many. Each day on the First Coast alone, four women are told they have breast cancer. That is enough reason for each of us to get out and do our part to help FINISH breast cancer. Multiply that by our neighboring states and countries – we all have mothers, sisters, and/or daughters and there is just no reason not to show up! This race attracts people from every state and more than 20 countries. Whether you are walking in the 5k, running the full marathon, cheering in the curb crew, handing out waters along the way, or handing out medals at the finish line, we all play a huge part in the overall mission to finish breast cancer. We can’t do it alone. We need the love, support and participation of everyone.

NORTH BEACH BISTRO

President of FoodiesUSA.com

NBBistro.com

Keith was working for Merrill Lynch in New Jersey when the acquisition by PHH Mortgage brought him to Jacksonville in 2000. Once in Jacksonville, Keith was eventually the casualty of a reduction in workforce and was faced with the question of what he wanted to do for the rest of his life.

North Beach Bistro is a little gem in Atlantic Beach. Locally owned and operated, this restaurant is great for any occasion, including happy hour, live entertainment or a nice night out. They also offer catering. Their adjoining art gallery is the perfect place for group events, as well.

A trip to Las Vegas with his friends made Keith realize that unless a visitor already knew where the good restaurants were, there was no way to find a place for a good meal based on the desired cuisine and atmosphere. As a result of this experience, Keith got the idea for FoodiesUSA, a social networking site dedicated to foodies (people who have a passion for food and drink). He launched FoodiesUSA. com shortly thereafter as a place to find restaurants, write reviews, share recipes and find food-related events. The rest is history!

BUZZ: Describe the perfect day for you. KR: Enjoying a cup of coffee in the morning outside, participating in some

kind of physical activity, eating a nice lunch, spending some time by the water, and then ending the day cooking with friends & family and enjoying time together.

BUZZ: What are some other causes you are passionate about (other than ending hunger)?

KR: I support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and the Arthritis Foundation. I have a personal connection to these causes and I think these organizations do great work.

BUZZ: Name someone you admire. KR: I admire Bon Jovi because of the nonprofit he established in New Jersey

called Soul Kitchen. People who go there can eat and donate whatever they can afford for the meal. If you have no money, you can volunteer your skills and help others in return for the meal. I would like to open a similar kitchen in Jacksonville with the help of funds raised through Foodies Care.

BUZZ: If you could travel anywhere, where would you go? KR: I would travel to Europe. Specifically, I would go to Oktoberfest, then Paris and Italy for the food!

The FAcTs What: Ketchup When: Wednesday evening Where: 2434 Mayport Rd, Atlantic Beach Contact: (904) 595-5143

They say that patience is a virtue, but it’s hard when your stomach is growling and your favorite foodie friend is late for lunch. Well, just maintain your composure because the palatable payoff is worth the wait at Ketchup!

The ATmosphere Parking was ample at this days-old establishment on Mayport Road. As my noshing neighbor and I entered, we were greeted with a warm salutation and smile from hostess Alexis. Once you order from a chalkboard menu, grab your drink and find a seat while you wait for your food delivery. Alexis told

us the entire menu has been carefully created by co-owner and executive chef, Ace French. Chef French and his staff make everything in-house and by hand. Even the burgers are ground on the premises daily, in addition to the half-pound, all-beef hotdogs! Soups and desserts are also homemade. I ordered The Avery hamburger with sautéed onions, fried onion straws and a magnificently melted slice of Gouda. The meat itself was seasoned, flawlessly cooked and delicious. The size of this burger was humungous, as was the onion straw side. The Mayhem hotdog was another great bite! Wrapped in bacon, sitting on a bed of fried jalapenos, and slathered with homemade chili and cheese, this pup was incredible. The pear-wasabi coleslaw was the perfect addition to this dish.

BUZZ: When did you find an interest in cooking?

AS: As a child, I spent a lot of time watching my

grandmother prepare family meals. Her passion for cooking was so great that it made me want to be just as passionate about cooking.

BUZZ: How did you receive your training to become a chef?

AS: A huge majority of my training was on the job. Working in the restaurant industry, mostly as a line cook, was the best training I could have ever received. BUZZ: What sets your restaurant apart?

AS: We currently do not have a restaurant but

are slowly revolutionizing fast, casual delivery.

The overall atmosphere here is casual and fun with reclaimed doors for table partitions, cement floors, old mattress spring lights, and other cool décor created by a local artist. The service was super-friendly; ownership is local and onsite; the atmosphere and menu are casual, creative and whimsical; and most importantly, the food was hot, fresh and truly made for happy taste buds. Definitely give this one a bite!

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Whether seen on HBO’s “Treme” or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Grammy-winning Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they’ve also extended themselves into the realms of funk and hip-hop to create their signature sound. “Rebirth can be precise whenever it wants to,” says The New York Times, “but it’s more like a party than a machine. It’s a working model of the New Orleans musical ethos: as long as everybody knows what they’re doing, anyone can cut loose.” In the wake of the sometimes-stringent competition amongst New Orleans brass bands, Rebirth is the undisputed leader of the pack and they show no signs of slowing down.

BEHIND THE MUSIC: Live at the Florida Theatre, southern rock legends Lynyrd Skynyrd are back in their hometown, Jacksonville, filming two live concerts for an upcoming TV special and DVD. For this ultimate fan experience, Lynyrd Skynyrd will perform their first two albums, “(pronounced ‘le h ̌ -’nérd ‘skin-’nérd)” and “Second Helping,” in their entirety. The legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd began some 41 years ago in Jacksonville, but was halted for a decade by the 1977 plane crash that killed three band members, including Ronnie Van Zant and Steve Gaines. Since then, the band tragically lost Allen Collins, Billy Powell, Leon Wilkeson and Hughie Thomasson. Lynyrd Skynyrd rocks on with original member Gary Rossington joined by Johnny Van Zant, Rickey Medlocke, Mark “Sparky” Matejka, Michael Cartellone, Johnny Colt, Peter Keys, Dale Krantz Rossington and Carol Chase. The rock and roll powerhouse continually tours, and heads out this summer on its second run with Bad Company. 2014 marks the eighth year for the annual Simple Man Cruise, a four-day voyage filled with the best music in Southern Rock, including an outdoor beach show featuring Lynyrd Skynyrd for the first time in the cruise’s history. With a catalog of more than 60 albums, sales beyond 30 million worldwide and their beloved classic American rock anthem “Sweet Home Alabama” having over two million downloaded ringtones, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame band Lynyrd Skynyrd remains a cultural icon that appeals to all generations.

HARRY CONNICK, JR. STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Harry On television, Connick is perhaps best known

Connick, Jr. will perform at the Times-Union Center February 15, 2015, at 7 p.m.

Showered with awards and recognition for his live and recorded musical performances, as well as his achievements on-screen and on the Broadway stage, Harry Connick, Jr. has exemplified excellence in every aspect of the entertainment world. The foundation of Connick’s art is the music of his native New Orleans, where he began performing as a pianist and vocalist at the age of five. His career took off when he signed with Columbia Records and revealed his stunning piano technique and vivid musical imagination with his multi-platinum success with When Harry Met Sally. To date, Connick has released 29 albums, won three Grammy Awards and two Emmy Awards, and garnered sales of $28 million. In addition to his music career, Connick has also appeared on the screen and stage as an actor. Among his many feature film credits are “Little Man Tate,” “Copycat,” “Hope Floats,” “Independence Day,” “P.S. I Love You,” “Dolphin Tale,” and “Dolphin Tale 2.”

for his recurring role on “Will & Grace” and appearances on “Law & Order: SVU.” Following his successful stint as a mentor on American Idol, Harry was invited to join Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban at the judges’ table for Season XIII and XIV.

His Broadway career boasts equal recognition. Connick received Tony Award nominations as both composer/lyricist for the musical “Thou Shalt Not” and the lead in the Tony Award-winning revival of “The Pajama Game.” Not surprisingly, Connick has used his influence as an entertainer to further his charitable work. Following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, he helped create the Musicians’ Village in the Upper Ninth Ward, which provides homes for musicians and other displaced citizens, as well as an afterschool facility for kids.

STRIKE UP A CHORD

INTERVIEWS IN THE MUSIC COMMUNITY WITH TODD RYKACZEWSKI

CODY NIX

BUZZ: If you were stuck in an elevator, what album would you want playing on repeat? CN: Zac Brown Band “You Get What You Give.” BUZZ: Are there specific songs that you find repeating in your head? CN: “Ride With Me” by Nelly, because I cover that almost every show, and “Get Me Some of That” by Thomas Rhett.

BUZZ: If you had to associate a color with the music you write, what color would that be? CN: Orange, because it’s a warm color. [My] music is the kind of music you listen to on a sunny day, outside, enjoying an ice cold beer.

BUZZ: What famous musician would you want to drink craft beer with? CJ: Brad Paisley, primarily because he writes most of his music and he is a great role model for his fans. He

hasn’t fallen into the country/rap style like most other artists. I respect him as a person and as a musician.

BUZZ: What do you think about all the singing shows like “American Idol”? CJ: I think they were good at first and provided a great opportunity for true talent to get a chance at

the big league, but after more and more shows kept coming out, they have lost their appeal to me. “The Voice” is probably my favorite one to watch because of the relationships with the stars.

BUZZ: Do you move like Mick Jagger? If not, who do you move like? CJ: I can’t dance to save my life. I literally have to force myself to make some kind of movement on stage while playing so I don’t look like a statue. BUZZ: If you’re on an island and your MP3 player had enough power for only one song, what song would you want it to play? CN: I would probably have to say “Knee Deep” by Zac Brown Band because the song fits so well! CodyNixMusic.com

CODY JOHNSON BUZZ: When and why did you start playing? CJ: I started focusing on music when I was about 22. I knew how to play about three

chords before that. I started playing because I always had the desire to perform in front of live audiences. At the time I began playing seriously I was living with the lead singer of A200, a killer rock band from Fort Myers. I saw him living his life so freely and said to myself, “I want that!” So I went out and just started annoying people with my silly songs and covers as long as they would listen. Now here I am playing music every week. It’s a ton of fun and doesn’t ever seem like work; it’s total freedom!

BUZZ: Were you influenced by old records & tapes? CJ: My girlfriend turned me on to Sinatra when we met about two years ago. She

introduced me to him and many other artists from that era. Those songs have had a huge impact on my style of singing. It was good to hear so many baritones singing naturally. Everyone nowadays shoots for that pop tenor range. I love my deep raspy voice; it feels good to be able to set myself apart from the rest of the industry and sing some low notes. You don’t see a lot of people embracing their natural low tones anymore.

BUZZ: Have you been in competitions? CJ: The most recent competition I was in was the International Music Festival of Fort

Myers. It was a charity event for kids in Africa; all proceeds went to a great cause. I got to compete against hometown bands who are all my friends! It was probably the highlight of my music career so far. It was just such an incredible experience playing for a good cause in front of my friends and family back where I grew up.

BUZZ: Describe your first instrument. CJ: My first instrument was a really cool acoustic guitar made in Hawaii. My dad bought it for me when I was about 14.

Benefits of Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Acupuncture originates from China and has been practiced there for thousands of years. For more than 23 centuries, the method of insertion of slender needles into pressure points in the body to unblock energy, blood and moisture flow has been used to treat and prevent illnesses. Acupuncture goes unnoticed by some and to others feels like a small pinch followed by a sensation of tingling, traveling warmth or heaviness. Today, acupuncture is known to treat everything from the common cold to infertility, and according to some, works even better than the ways of Western medicine. With certain health conditions, acupuncture can be effective enough to reduce or eliminate the need to take drugs to control pain or symptoms. Additional benefits of acupuncture are faster recovery from injuries, decreased symptoms of stress, and improved circulation.

6 REASONS TO TRY ACUPUNCTURE TODAY:

JU<Guard

Andris Misters is giving the Jacksonville University Dolphins a boost with his play so far in the 2014-15 season. The 6-foot 5-inch junior guard is averaging more than 14 points a game this season. Misters is from Latvia and went to high school in New Jersey.

Deandre Johnson

First Coast High School <Quarterback

The First Coast High School star quarterback is already enrolled at Florida State. The Class 8A Player of the Year was also named the FHSAA State Player of the Year. We told you in the fall about Johnson’s accolades and he added to them as the season went along. Johnson is putting his name in the area record books by breaking passing marks set by Tim Tebow and John Wolford.

Kevin Sullivan

Atlantic Coast <Recently Retired Head Football Coach

The Atlantic Coast head football coach has retired. Sullivan, 52, coached in the state of Florida for 24 years. He coached at Jackson High School and Atlantic Coast High School here in the River City. Sullivan was recently inducted into the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He had a record of 181-84 in 24 years of coaching.

Dallas Moore

UNF<Point Guard

The Atlantic Sun Freshman of the Year in 2013-14 is having a sensational sophomore campaign for the UNF Ospreys. He’s averaging almost 17 points per game to lead the young Ospreys team. Moore tied a career high with 27 points in a big win over Florida Gulf Coast in January.

• It’s time-tested. Unlike newer treatments and medicines on the market, you can rest assured knowing acupuncture has been tested for thousands of years. Some of the early documented accounts of acupuncture date back to China’s Shang Dynasty of 1600-1100 BC. • Acupuncture sessions are short, usually lasting 30-60 minutes each. • One in three Americans use some form of contemporary/alternative medicine. Why aren’t you? • According to a study published in the May issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, patients suffering from back pain saw a 60% greater improvement in their symptoms from acupuncture treatment than patients treated with traditional pharmaceutics. • Acupuncture can treat both physiological and psychological disorders. Some of the common psychological disorders treated through acupuncture include stress, anxiety, depression and insomnia. • It’s painless. Contrary to what some people may believe, acupuncture is completely painless. In fact, it’s actually quite calming and relaxing, as it activates your body’s natural self-healing-process. Chinese acupuncture allows for a number of benefits. Learning more about this Eastern practice can give you more options in times of illness.

Can We Change the Culture of Youth Sports? Every day, 3,400 children sustain a sports injury severe enough to go to the emergency room. Safe Kids Worldwide, with the support of Johnson & Johnson, conducted a survey this year of parents, coaches and young athletes to explore how the culture of sports may be keeping kids out of the game. The report, “Changing the Culture of Youth Sports,” took an indepth look at behaviors that may lead to serious injuries. One in four young athletes reported it is normal to commit hard fouls and play rough to “send a message” during a game. This norm leads to a disturbing number of injuries: 33 percent of athletes report being hurt as the result of “dirty play” from an opponent.

After Workout Smoothie Now that you are into full swing with your healthy plan for 2015, you need to make sure you keep up your energy after a hard work out or race. Below is a recipe that will help your body replenish itself after intense physical activity.

The Athlete Dash of Sea Salt (helps prevent muscle pains, spasms and cramps) 8 oz Coconut Water (helps rehydrate the body) 1/2 Avocado (good source of monounsaturated fat and about 4 grams of protein) 1 C Baby Kale & Greens (good source of fiber and helps manage blood sugar) 1 Part Spirulina (good source of protein) 1 Part Beet Powder (contains high levels of important vitamins & minerals and can help lower blood pressure) 1 Part Eleuthero Root Powder (helps prevent fatigue and provide energy)

Approximately 42 percent of players reported they have hidden or downplayed an injury during a game so they could keep playing and 62 percent said they know someone else who has done so. Only 27 percent of coaches reported a player having hidden or downplayed an injury. More than half of athletes reported playing while injured. The survey also revealed that more than half of coaches reported being pressured by a parent or player to put an athlete back into a game when a child has been injured. Safe Kids Northeast Florida and partner Jacksonville Sports Medicine Program agree that we can change the culture of sports for young athletes. Encouraging kids to speak up when they are hurt, giving them time to recover, and giving coaches the tools they need to be effective will help keep young athletes safe while playing sports. With spring sports coming up, Safe Kids shares these culturechanging strategies: • Set ground rules at the beginning of the season. • Teach athletes ways to prevent injuries. • Prevent overuse injuries. • Encourage athletes to speak up when they’re injured. • Put an end to dirty play and rule-breaking. • Learn how to use an AED, as well as first aid, CPR and injury prevention skills. Some people have expressed interest in a drawing I made. How do I protect my rights in my drawing? The answer partly depends on how you plan to use your drawing, or if you intend to let others use or copy it. Copyright protects content like your drawing, music, writing and other works. Copyright attaches when your work is drawn, written down or recorded. However, to enforce copyright rights against infringers (unpermitted copiers), you have to register your drawing. You could license the drawing to one or more users. You could also sell the drawing and your rights to it with a written statement in which you assign your copyright to the buyer. Otherwise, you keep ownership of the drawing.

How do I protect my drawing if I want to use it as logo for my business? Business logos, names, and one or more word phrases can be trademarks. Trademarks identify the source of goods and services so that buyers know whose product or service they are buying. Trademark rights exist based on use. Unlike copyright, you do not need to register your trademark. Registration is beneficial and recommended, though, because the scope of protection is legally enhanced. For example, the geographic reach can be statewide for a Florida registration or national for a U.S. registration. The remedies available for infringement are also both broader and easier to prove. What made you decide to open your business?

I was the first licensed female mortgage broker in the state in the 60s. In the early 80s I had to go tend to my sick father in Texas for a period of time. When I came back to Florida, the brokerage industry was inundated and no one would hire me. I began shooting photos with a hired Santa as a promo business and it just grew exponentially from there. Many of my clients and entertainers have been with me for more than 25 years; I’m extremely proud of that fact.

Lights, Camera, Jacksonville! By Kristen Sell

OSCAR-WINNING PRODUCER MICHAEL HAUSMAN LOVES JACKSONVILLE! This past December, Oscar-winning producer Michael Hausman once again returned to Jacksonville to volunteer his time teaching at the Art Institute of Jacksonville. Hausman’s relationship with Jacksonville began while producing the award-winning HBO film “Recount” (2008), starring Kevin Spacey, Laura Dern and Denis Leary. The opportunity for students to learn from Hausman, who tells them the biggest hurdle for making movies today is finding a distributor – provides them with true filmmaking perspective. “Having Michael volunteer his efforts at the Art Institute of Jacksonville shows the kind of individual he truly is,” said Todd Roobin, manager of the Jacksonville Film & Television Office. “The experience the students learn through his teaching proves to be invaluable towards furthering their film industry careers.” Hausman’s producer and executive producer credits include: “The Firm” (1993), “The People vs. Larry Flynt” (1996), “Man on the Moon” (1999), “Gangs of New York” (2002) and “Brokeback Mountain” (2005).

Changing the Focus creates and delivers programs that build positive, powerful and balanced individuals, as well as more productive, creative and profitable organizations. John’s book “The Daily Six” won the best book award from USA Book News. BUZZ: Who are you when no one’s watching? JC: Well, I try to be the same guy but it’s not easy. I have 40 years of old behavior and only 20 or so of new behavior, so under stress, the old behaviors come out. I don’t carry anger, resentments and judgments around anymore, I let them go or – even better – I try not to pick them up. I thought stress was required to be successful, but I was wrong. I have finally learned stress is always generated by me and I can choose to stop any time I want. BUZZ: What does being successful mean to you? JC: Today, success to me means significance in the lives of others, personally and professionally. 46

February 2015 • www.iwantaBUZZ.com

BUZZ: What would you do if you knew you could not fail? JC: Funny you should ask that – that is exactly what I am doing. Back in 1991 before I started on this new path, I was struggling with what to do going forward and my daughter Erin asked me that exact question. I guess the most fun I ever had was being a lead singer in a band in high school. The thing that was making the biggest difference in my life was practicing “The Daily Six.” I figured that if I could have a microphone and an audience and talk about these principles, that would be the greatest job in the world; and it is.

It’s February – a month filled with chocolates and Valentine’s Day. So what am I giving you? Honey, honey. With just a hint of honey from their own bees (how cool is that?), Rogue Farms Honey Kolsch isn’t over-thetop sweet. It pairs well with spicy foods, so what better way to spice up your Valentine’s Day than with Rogue Farms Honey Kolsch Sweet & Spicy Pulled Pork? It’s a little bit sweet and a little bit spicy, which is just how Valentine’s Day should be! Serve it topped with spicy slaw on grilled potato rolls with Rogue Farms Honey Kolsch (in a champagne flute, of course!) on the side.

Catchin' a BUZZ

ROGUE FARMS HONEY KOLSCH SWEET & SPICY PULLED PORK Spicy Slaw Ingredients 16 oz packaged slaw (you can shred cabbage and carrots, if preferred) 3 Tbs olive oil 2 Tbs lemon juice

2 tsp honey 1 tsp rice vinegar 1/2 tsp honey mustard 1 tsp grated habanero 2 tsp grated shallot

Directions Whisk all ingredients except slaw in bowl.

Toss with slaw. Serve on top of pulled pork.

Pulled Pork Ingredients 3 to 4 lb Boston Butt 2 cups Rogue Farms Honey Kolsch 1 onion, coarsely chopped ¾ cup honey

2 tsp lemon juice ¼ brown sugar 2 cloves minced garlic 2 tsp salt 2 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp cayenne pepper

Directions Place onion, honey and lemon juice in bottom of roasting pan. Add Rogue Farms Honey Kolsch. Mix remaining five ingredients and rub on pork. Place pork in pan. Roast in 350-degree oven for three to five hours. Be sure to check for tenderness and liquid level. When done, remove from pan (reserve liquid to pour over pork after it’s shredded), and pull apart with forks.

Brew Time By Marc Wisdom

By Brian Little

It’s the time of year when romance is in the air. For a beer lover, it can be difficult to find a romantic brew to share with a sweetheart. For many, beer has always been thought of as a party beverage rather than a drink one might share at a romantic dinner or while curled up in front of the fireplace. However, beer can be a very romantic beverage. History provides some precedence for this. In her book “Remedies and Rituals: Folk Medicine in Norway and the New Land,” Kathleen Stokker writes that early Christian law dictated that landowners brew beer to share with their neighbors during celebrations such as betrothal. This practice continued throughout the centuries, with accounts of drunken weddings into the 1800s and beyond.

Follow me on twitter @beerapostle Sourcing Suds is a column by the Beer Apostle, Brian Little, recognizing beer that’s locally brewed and served. Join him each month as he highlights a local craft beer and where you can find it on tap!

Some incorrect historians have tied the word bridal with beer, stating that the original form was bride-ale. But, as Martin Cornell points out on his blog Zythophile, the ale in bride-ale actually refers to the word’s secondary meaning of celebration. There were, however, many traditions regarding brides and ale including the practice of the bride brewing ale to sell to guests at her wedding. In parts of England, there is a wedding ritual in which guests race to the bride’s house to pick up a tankard of warm ale. The tankard is returned to the wedding site and offered to the bride, who presents the triumphant racer with a ribbon as a prize. In Cameroon among the Koma people, brewing beer in conjunction with the slaughter of cattle is a ritual that honors a man’s wife and raises his status.

In case you’ve missed the buzz (no pun intended), the folks at Visit Jacksonville have launched the Jax Ale Trail as part of their package to promote tourism to the city. Anyone who has spent any time in Jacksonville knows that craft beer has become an integral part of the city’s identity. I have been preaching it for a while now, but I believe that Jacksonville has quickly become the beer capital of Florida. The Jax Ale Trail confirms this notion; Jacksonville’s beer scene stands toe-to-toe with any other city, and we’ve only begun to see the potential. With more breweries set to open in the coming months, this is a fun time for beer nerds and general tourists alike. The Jax Ale Trail invites beer lovers to take a self-guided tour of seven craft breweries across the city of Jacksonville, which includes Aardwolf Brewing Company, Bold City Brewery, Engine 15 Brewing Co., Green Room Brewing, Intuition Ale Works, Pinglehead Brewing Co. and Veterans United Craft Brewery.

February CROSSWORD Horoscope

Written by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

Aries (March 21- April 19)

A new year, but possibly the same old problem. Apparently an ex or old fling is working their way back into your life. Of course you love this attention, but let’s simmer down a bit on this one. Even at their best, your ex is still crap. No second chances in 2015.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20)

Hope you are ready! A big transition is in your future. You and your mate may be moving in, getting married, or having a baby! I have a feeling only one of the two of you is really excited by this news. Hopefully it’s you, or it’s going to be a long year.

Gemini (May 21 – June 21)

ACROSS 1- Examine, search 5- Went through, as the paper 9- Saying 14- Architect Saarinen 15- Start of a counting rhyme 16- Attack 17- Public disturbance 18- Sawbucks 19- Club alternative 20- Blossom 22- Sleep issue 24- Promising words 25- Strategic withdrawal 29- Vacant 32- Terrible time? 34- Actress Daly 35- Deep wound 36- Thorax 37- Encounter 38- Baby blues 39- Thin as ___ 40- Red Muppet 41- Closed 42- Variety show 43- Dresden denial 44- I did it! 45- Abound 46- Kett and James 47- Swabs 49- Menu words 50- Soft 52- Good to go 56- Dark 59- Smell or fragrance 61- Sock ___ me! 62- Device with 88 keys 63- City in Western Nevada 64- Madcap 65- Straighten 66- Pizazz 67- Greek letters

Apparently four planets are in your eighth house of intimate bonding. Whenever intimate and bonding are in the same sentence, you can never go wrong. Intimate bonding. Enough said. Have fun.

Cancer (June 22 – July 22)

The Sun’s departure from your relationship sector yesterday was a very dramatic affair, confronted by a new Moon that created both pressure and a demand for personal and relationship authenticity. In Layman’s terms… I have no idea. It’s a bunch of mumbo-jumbo to me.

Leo (July 23 – August 22)

Separation is in your future, Leo. Maybe you can save it. Show you can adapt and… I can’t lie. You are soon to be single. Be prepared to take it well. You can find another date for Valentine’s Day if you hurry and get it over with.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22)

Why wait for Valentine’s Day? It’s an incredible month for love. All kinds of planets and other important things are in your fifth house of romance. This obviously means get out there; shake some hands or, if necessary, shake your butt instead. Whatever it takes to get noticed.

Libra (September 23 – October 22)

According to an online source, Libra has never been keen on dating. This month it could get a little steamy. Don’t lay low. Lay… high, I guess. Text that crush you’ve been shy around. This is the month to try – or at least fail trying.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21)

All my sources are telling me you need to concentrate more on work this month and not romance. That is not very interesting to write about so I am going to make this up instead. Your online profile is holding you back and it’s time to place some outlandish, fun pictures to attract an adventurous person.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21)

Keep your expectations low this month, Sagittarius. Love is still in the air, but with people more down to earth. Actually, more like just down. But hey, bars have dim lights and booze for reasons like this. Silver linings.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19)

In an act of desperation, you may be turning to an old flame or ex-mate. The key word in that sentence is “desperation.” I guess if you are happy being a desperate fool, then by all means take that train to bad-decision-town. I warned you.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18)

With Jupiter in retrograde, it’s time you tap the brakes on your relationship and think about the possible bad decision you are making. Sure it’s your birthday month and you want to have no issues, but the planets say you are with the wrong person. Hmmm... deal with it next month.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20)

You seem confused and mystified by love right now – no surprise. Don’t be afraid to ask others for clarification, we are used to helping you out. It helps us feel superior around you. Thanks for the ego boost, little Pisces.
