THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON I’VE INTERVIEWED THIS MONTH Local business owner Katherine Way started a clothing company four years ago with one goal in mind: keep jobs in the United States. “It was important for me to try and find a manufacturing plant here in Florida to sew, so I could get there quickly, but also ship directly out of here,” said Way. Katherine Way Collections’ resort-style fabrics and prints are produced in California and sewn in Miami before arriving in Jacksonville. The line began in just eight stores and has now expanded into more than 300 boutiques across the country.
“Not only have women here told their friends and families, they continue to support us in every way,” said Way. “Also, the networking has been extremely important here in the Jacksonville area.” Make sure to tune into 89.9 FM every morning at 9 a.m. to hear from some of the most compelling newsmakers of the First Coast! 14

THE ARTS
William Garcia Ruiz
Havana, Cuba native, William Garcia Ruiz, moved to Jacksonville six years ago. He is currently a fine arts student at Florida State College at Jacksonville. While he is comfortable with a variety of media, he favors oils on canvas. Purposeful brushstrokes and thoughtful images collide on his canvases. “I like to think I am mixing emotions when I squeeze the tube colors to form my palette,” said Garcia. “I strive to make each piece evoke something in the viewer, like remembering a re-occurring dream or forgotten memory.” Garcia has been painting since he was old enough to hold a brush.
“Where I grew up, it was difficult to express anything that did not follow the government’s take on the matter,” said Garcia. “But our people are proud and creative. Even though society had limits, everyone created something. These items provided an income, and an outlet.” For more information, contact Foreman Services (agent) at 904-662-7859 or at garciafineart@gmail.com.
THRASHER-HORNE CENTER DENTON YOCKEY
Executive Director Thrasher-Horne Center
Tell us about the rest of the shows this season. Each show is special in its own way. We have a great mix coming up with our offerings for families and kids, along with some huge names in the business and some comedy thrown in for good measure. If you like to laugh, definitely check out Wayne Brady in the “It’s My Line” tour, which will showcase his acting, singing, improv, and more. Billy Gardell, best known for the hit show, “Mike and Molly,” will wow audiences with his comedy act based on his Comedy Central special. For a kid-friendly show, don’t miss the “Super Scientific Circus” – it will prove to your kids that science can be fun and funny. “Choosy Suzy’s Bully Prevention Show” is the perfect blend of hip humor, magic, and music with serious suggestions for coping with bullies, which is unfortunately an important and prevalent topic these days. We’re also proud to host Parsons Dance, the New York City modern dance company. Parsons Dance is always a favorite that can bring exuberance, joy and passion to any stage. There’s also already a buzz about Jay Leno, who is coming in January; and let’s not forget the man himself, Kenny Rogers, who will be gracing our stage on his final tour. How did you choose next season’s Broadway offerings? One of the great mysteries people always ask me about! First, we start with what is available within the Broadway touring industry. We get this information from agents who are charged by the tour producers of selling the shows to presenters like Thrasher-Horne Center. Sometimes the show is coming from Broadway after a successful run and sometimes it is a revival because a producer believes there is demand for a certain title. We match up show availability and routing with our calendar dates. WHAT’S HAPPENING AT MOSH: Celebrating 75 years By Kristi Taylor
The Museum of Science & History (MOSH) is celebrating 75 years of service to the community this year. MOSH recently opened the exhibit, “Museum of Science & History: A Gateway to Nature” in the Jacksonville International Airport’s Sky Gallery. Since opening in its first permanent home in 1948, MOSH has inspired natural curiosity through exhibits and programs that teach visitors to “appreciate the little things of life that abound in their backyards, city parks, and interesting places they may visit.” appreciate the little
things of life...”
Objects and specimens from the Museum’s Collections are complemented by artist Kathy Stark’s striking paintings of Northeast Florida’s green spaces, weaving together the legacy of Jacksonville’s parks systems and the 75-year history of MOSH. While the Museum’s programs and exhibits change to serve the needs of the community, the emphasis on the importance of green spaces in our city prevails.

Jacksonville salutes meaty BBQ meals and its military. Mission BBQ, located on Blanding Blvd just off the I-295 exit, is a patriotic tribute to both in the most delicious way. Not only does the dining room of this amazing BBQ joint acknowledge all of the brave men and women of the military branches, but it also spotlights first responders. Uniforms, stickers, patches, plaques, and pictures cover the walls here, thematically demonstrating the Mission BBQ mantra. Owners Steve Newton and Bill Kraus’ mission is to serve those who serve. While I do love me some philanthropic business endeavors, it’s also important to wave a flag and surrender your appetite to the good food here. Everything at Mission BBQ is homemade or handcrafted with no microwaves or freezers on the premises. The meats are smoked fresh all day, every day.
The claim to being fresh and fabulous is not unfounded by any means. I ordered the Market Sampler with three meats. Brisket – fatty, melt-in yourmouth magnificent with a crisp n’ tasty bark, pulled pork – incredibly tender and perfectly seasoned, and the jalapeño and cheese sausage – a not-too-hot pop of porky, fork-filled fun! Included were cornbread plus two sides. I targeted the baked Maggie’s Mac-NCheese (which was undeniably some of the best in Jax) and the fantastic green beans and bacon. All of it was piping hot and simply delicious. On top of the awesome ‘we cater to something greater’ theme of Mission BBQ, the staff was young and friendly, and worked seamlessly as a team. So, hang out with some local heroes this month over at Mission BBQ. But don’t expect to do so on the 4th of July as this fantastic flag-waving spot will be closed in celebration of all the folks who serve our citizens this Independence Day!
Shelby the floor concierge stated, “The food here is house-made and always fresh, fresh, fresh!”

Taking 5 with Taverna
Hand-crafted convenience in the heart of San Marco By Mike Kuusela
The first thing you’ll notice at Taverna in San Marco is the unique interior with a design that draws your eye and visually follows like a river. The interior has a very modern look and a trendy feel. I spoke with Olivia Baker, the events and marketing manager for Taverna. She explained that the restaurant got started in 2009 by Sam and Kiley Wynne Efron. Kiley worked in several five-star Italian restaurants in the San Francisco Bay Area and Sam, who is the restaurant’s executive chef, studied the culinary arts at Florida State University and the Culinary Institute of America.
The vision of Taverna’s restaurant “draws inspiration from the simplicity and warmth of rustic Italian kitchens.” The concept of the interior design came from Kiley, who is passionate about presentation. She worked with a team of designers, but the project was her vision. If you’re a first-time guest at Taverna, order the braised short rib with kuskus, spring peas mushrooms, and tomato. Also, the house-made fettuccine has been on menu since day one and hasn’t changed for a reason: customers love it.
After deciding that being overweight was affecting many facets of her life, Chef Florence Haridan made a definitive change in her eating and cooking style. As a result of her healthier food choices, Haridan dropped a large portion of her weight and slipped into a new, conscious eating way of living and eating (thus, the name Conscious Eats). Haridan currently works wearing her Conscious Eats hat as the Toffee Chef for Amelia Toffee, and as the Creative Director for White Harvest Farms. BUZZ: When did you find an interest in cooking?
FH: As a child, I started taking an
interest in cooking when my mom when back to work. I took over in the kitchen! Additionally, for 13 years I engaged in preparing elaborate, international Christmas dinners with the family. This annual event really tapped into my creative culinary side!
Taverna is passionate about its customers and its San Marco neighborhood where the restaurant sits nestled right in the heart of the action on San Marco Boulevard. Sam and Kiley are a part of the San Marco Preservation Society and the San Marco Merchant’s Association. They also have water bowls on their front patio area for customers who wish to bring their four-legged friends with them. Taverna’s happy hour is every Monday through Friday 4-7 p.m. with “Happy Drinks and Happy Bites,” premium wells, draft and craft beers, signature cocktails, and selected wines. The restaurant has a private dining area for special events and offers delivery through their own in-house delivery team. Taverna’s kid’s menu features favorites like cheese and pepperoni pizza as well as grilled cheese sandwiches. They also prepare daily lunch boxes for customers seeking a quick pickup and go solution that provides “hand-crafted convenience” for lunchtime. For more information, visit Taverna.Restaurant.com.

MOJO KITCHEN, BBQ PIT & BLUES BAR
Southern BBQ at it’s Finest
A JAX BEACH TRADITION By Mike Kuusela
ANGIE’S SUBS As I entered one of Jacksonville Beach’s longstanding local establishments, Angie’s Subs, I was greeted by a very friendly staff and subsequently introduced to long-time manager, Gordon Atkisson, as well as the owner of this tasty sub shop, Ed Malin. The interior of the establishment reminded me of a combination of a surf shack and rustic cabin, a style referred to as “garage sale atmosphere,” by Malin. He explained the interior as a collection of furniture and “kitschy-stuff” collected from places like Ruth Chris and Chick-Fil-A over the years. Malin has been the owner of Angie’s Subs since 1999, although the original shop opened in Mayport in the mid 1970’s, and was created by a man named Angelo who developed the menu concept through his love of Italian heritage and food. Angie’s sees an average of 400 customers a day.
Mojo Kitchen, BBQ Pit & Blues Bar stands as a fine example of what American barbecue should be like: flavorful, juicy, tender, and down right delicious. I grilled General Manager Keith Johnson with questions of Mojo’s origin. He explained that the owner, Todd Lineberry’s family was originally from North Carolina and brought some of the best barbecue with them. After travelling across the south and exploring famous barbecue establishments, Lineberry developed the concept of Mojo’s, a restaurant bringing the flavor and soul he experienced on his journey. Customers rave about the appetizer, Kansas City Burnt Ends, and the most popular main course, pulled pork. The signature brisket is another customer favorite, as is their sweet sauce. Speaking from personal experience, the homemade banana pudding is a great way to finish off a meal. There is also a full bar and many whiskey-inspired signature cocktails to enjoy.
If you are planning to visit Angie’s Subs for the first time, a solid recommendation is “The Peruvian,” as this sandwich accounts for 25 percent of all sales at the restaurant. If you want a little something along the adult variety, Angie’s Subs does offer about a dozen bottled beers and wine by the glass. There are also several special events throughout the year, like the “Best Butt at the Beach” contest in April. While the name might be rather suggestive, it is actually a BBQ contest. The restaurant hosts a popular pumpkin carving contest in October as well a large holiday Christmas party for customers and even former staff members. Angie’s Subs also has a history of community involvement, partnering with the Florida Georgia Blood Alliance and other community based organizations. Angie’s Subs always provides first responders with a free drink with purchase of a sub, and feeds military for free on the 9/11 anniversary. In addition, they partner with JSO on programs like “Get Hooked On Fishing,” which fosters a positive relationship between law enforcement officers and young kids in local neighborhoods. Malin believes Angie’s Subs is a local food fan favorite because of the blue-ribbon award for their Southern-style sweet tea, their delicious subs baked in a 550-degree pizza oven, and the quality of service and professionalism from his young staff. As for the future, Angie’s Sub will soon be diversifying their menu offerings in the local market in a major way. Stay tuned.
Mojo Kitchen, BBQ Pit & Blues Bar sees approximately 225 guests a day, and they have featured live entertainment from artists such as two-time Grammy winner, James Cotton, famous for blues music. Mojo’s has mastered bringing the soul of Memphis’ Bale Street, the Mecca for barbecue and blues music, to the shores of the First Coast. Mojo Kitchen, BBQ Pit & Blues Bar has always been conscious about giving back to the community as well. They participate in fundraising for Jay Fund, provide food at TPC for veterans and their families, donate food for Catty Shack (large exotic cats, lions, and tigers retirement), and are also involved in the “Caring Chefs” event at the Avenues Mall. Mojo Kitchen, BBQ Pit & Blues Bar and its parent company, Mojo Q Holdings Inc. have been blessed with success in the local market and currently stand six restaurants strong with plans to open additional locations in Ocala and Lakeland in the near future. Johnson believes there are no shortcuts to greatness. As an example, he explained how Mojo’s spends 13-14 hours a day smoking their meats in a wood fire smoker. JANET JACKSON STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Singer, songwriter, dancer, and actress, Janet Jackson is a multi-talented artist whose musical and performance skills have been wowing crowds from all over for many years. With “The King of Pop” (Michael Jackson) being her older brother, the comparison between the two’s music is worthy of a debate. But Janet’s sonically innovative and socially conscious themes in her music identify her as her own artist. After signing a recording contract with A&M Records in 1982, she became a pop icon following the release of her third studio album, “Control (1986).” Her collaborations with record producers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis incorporated elements of rhythm and blues, funk, disco, rap, and industrial beats, which led to crossover success in pop music. In addition to receiving recognition for the innovation in her records, choreography, music videos, and prominence on radio airplay and MTV, she was acknowledged as a role model for her socially conscious lyrics. Being ranked as one of the highest-selling recording artists in the history of contemporary music, Janet Jackson has sold over 160 million records to-date. The Recording Industry Association of America named Janet the 11th best-selling female artist in America, with 26 million certified albums. She also holds the record for most consecutive top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 list with 18 records. One of the world’s most awarded artists, her longevity, records, and achievements reflect her influence in shaping and redefining the scope of popular music. She has been cited as an inspiration among numerous performers.

JILL SCOTT STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Three-time Grammy award winning R&B vocalist, Jill Scott made her debut in 2000 with the album, “Who Is Jill Scott? Words and Sounds Vol. 1,” showing off her versatility. Scott began her performing career as a spoken word artist, appearing at live poetry readings to perform her work. She was eventually discovered by Amir “Questlove” Thompson of the Roots. Questlove invited her to join the band in the studio. The collaboration resulted in a co-writing credit for Scott on the song, “You Got Me.” In 2000, Erykah Badu and the Roots won a Grammy for “You Got Me,” and Scott debuted as an artist during a Roots live show, singing as original artist of the song. Subsequently, Scott collaborated with Eric Benet, Will Smith, and Common, and broadened her performing experience by touring Canada in a production of the Broadway musical, “Rent.” Scott was the first artist signed to Steve McKeever’s Hidden Beach Recordings label. She experienced some notice and chart success with the single, “A Long Walk,” eventually earning a Grammy nomination in early 2003 for Best Female Vocal Performance. Scott won a Grammy in 2005 for Best Urban/Alternative R&B Performance for “Cross My Mind.” Her live album was released November 2001. Scott’s second full-length album, “Beautifully Human: Words and Sounds Vol. 2,” followed in 2004. She continues to make timeless soul music and remains one of the many queens of R&B.

It is the band’s first album of new material since 1999.

American Aquarium is an alternative country band from Raleigh, North Carolina. The band derived its name from the Wilco song, “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart,” and consists of lead vocalist/ guitarist BJ Barham, bassist Bill Corbin, guitarist Ryan Johnson, guitarist Colin DiMeo, drummer Kevin McClain, and Whit Wright on pedal steel guitar and keyboards.
THE GOO GOO DOLLS
Aug. 31 St. Augustine Amphitheatre • St.AugAmphitheatre.com
The Goo Goo Dolls are an American rock band formed in 1986 in Buffalo, New York. Renowned for their 1998 commercially successful hit “Iris,” The Goo Goo Dolls have had several other notable and popular singles including, “Name” and “Naked” from 1995’s “A Boy Named Goo.” They have top 10 singles on various charts throughout their career, and have proven to hold a prominent longevity in the music industry.
The band, who reunited in 2014, is comprised of Boy George (lead vocals), Mikey Craig (bass guitar), Roy Hay (guitar and keyboards), and Jon Moss (drums and percussion). They hit it big in the 1980s with songs like, “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me” and “Karma Chameleon.” We had a chance to chat with Mikey Craig about the new album, his favorite Culture Club song, and of course, getting the band back together.
BUZZ: What can fans expect from Culture Club at the concert?
MC:
Oh yeah, and more so. Watch out Jacksonville. He will definitely be shocking out.
BUZZ: How did you all manage to get the band back together? MC: We were thinking about doing it a few years before we officially got back together in 2014, but it took a bit of toing and froing, if you know what I mean. It was try this, try that. We changed management; a lot of chopping and changing. It seemed it wasn’t going to work, but we did come back together and finally we did actually get a great album.
BUZZ: Speaking of your new album, can you tell us about how it was put together?
MC: We recorded it with Youth, who is a rock
producer. It sounded like a crazy choice, but it worked spectacularly well. He helped us reconnect as a band and made us into a band again without using a lot of technology to patch things up. He brought the songs out of us, using no technology whatsoever. It was amazing working with him. He has a studio in Spain, and we recorded outside of Granada in Southern Spain. It was a beautiful location, and we couldn’t help but record great music. July 2016 • iwantaBUZZ.com 29

TERRI MORRISON
Owner Mindful Motion Yoga
When yoga studio owner Terri Morrison opened her location she had one mission in mind. She wanted the beginner and the seasoned yoga student to feel welcomed. “Yoga is intimidating,” said Morrison, who opened Mindful Motion Yoga in 2008. “I wanted to make it very accessible.” Morrison chose warm, inviting earth tones for the décor and foyer area. Before class every yogi student – at no extra cost – receives a yoga mat, fresh towels, bottled water and refreshments. Her philosophy was simple: “Get yourself here and we will take care of everything else,” said Morrison. The facility, located at 3546 St. John’s Bluff Road near the Beach Blvd intersection, has a large space for group classes and a smaller room for private instruction. Classes are taught by one of 10 instructors and range from Chair Yoga to Basic Yoga, and others. New students can try unlimited classes for 30 days for $30 and walk-ins are welcomed. “We have had very organic growth and we like it that way,” said Morrison. “We want our clients to be seen as a whole person and know that they are cared about.” Some of her yoga students are grabbling with issues such as a muscle injury, while others are more serious, such as divorce or loss of a murdered child. Morrison and her team help student develop mindfulness through yoga, which can be a very powerful life skill and therapeutic coping tool. “Mindfulness is paying attention to one thing at a time on purpose without judgment,” said Morrison. She hopes all of her students will “experience joy” and “practice awareness” with every breath and movement. For more information, visit MindfulMotion-Yoga.com or call (904) 996-2500.

REDEMPTION AT LAST AFTER YEARS IN THE SHELTER Layla was homeless for almost three years before one man saved her life DATE: July 15-17, 2016 TIME: Adoption hours are 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. every day LOCATION: Jacksonville Fairgrounds Clay County Animal Care & Control brought Layla to December’s MEGA Adoption with high hopes that a special family would finally adopt her. After almost three years of being in the shelter, Layla’s best friends were Clay County’s staff, volunteers, and another longtime resident, Bucky. Enter Lance Hackelton, who lives and works in Neptune Beach, and came to the MEGA Adoption looking for a new best friend. Lance had always wanted a loyal and loving dog to take to the beach, and when he saw Layla he knew he had found his companion.
“This was just the dog I was looking for, she’s gorgeous,” said Hackelton. “She gets a home, she gets out of the cage, and finally gets to be a dog.” Clay County Animal Care & Control (CCAC&C) employees and volunteers were in tears. Because Lance lives at the beach, Layla will be in heaven; she is known to be a waterlover. Layla is laid back and very affectionate, and loves to “hug” humans. Moreover, a long time in the shelter does have its upside – Layla knows how to sit, shake, and lay down, among other tricks and commands. “Sweet Layla is so much fun and I am overjoyed that she finally has a home, because she deserves it,” said Jennifer Woolard of CCAC&C. “I think we will all miss her – like playing in her sprinkler with Bucky, but I think this is the happiest I’ve been all year… just to see Layla find a loving home.” Dogs and cats like Layla are still homeless and waiting for a family to call their own. First Coast No More Homeless Pets (FCNMHP) organizes and runs large-scale adoption events sponsored by the Petco Foundation, helping shelters and rescues find homes for hundreds of pets. The mission of FCNMHP is to end the needless killing of cats and dogs in shelters. Several programs offer free or low-cost spay/neuter surgeries and veterinary care discounts to those who need it the most. Since 2002, more than 160,000 dogs and cats have been sterilized and benefited from our programs. Pairing that with large adoption events, the effect has been a 97 percent reduction in the euthanasia rate in Jacksonville.

BRINGING ACTION TO THE BIG SCREEN
By Mike Kuusela
Last week I had the opportunity to sit down with a former business acquaintance and current Hollywood stuntman, Nick Loren. Nick Loren has been the long-time stunt double of John Travolta and has recently made a name for himself in the world of children’s literature.
In 1996 he was acting as a stunt double for Nicholas Cage in John Woo’s “Face Off.” He networked himself amongst the cast members during his two weeks on set. Soon, he received a call to become John Travolta’s stunt double.
Nick and I used to work together at First Coast News in downtown Jacksonville when Nick was cohosting on Jacksonville’s local program, “First Coast Living” with Casey Black. Nick provided an inside look at businesses and local entrepreneurs on the show.
Nick told me, “This is where I met John and a year later became his personal stand-in. It was a few years later that friends encouraged me to take on stunt work. It was a hard decision to make because you have to understand people that go into the industry wanting to be a stunt man have a very unique mindset. I mean human nature is to survive.”
During our interview, I discovered the back story of Nick’s career and what had brought him to Jacksonville. Originally from San Diego, California, Nick entered the entertainment business out of high school. His entertainment career developed through his love for music. As a teenager, he used to be in a band, and was even a back-up dancer in several 90’s music videos. “I was a single dad to my then 4-year-old son, Tysan,” said Nick. “I was discouraged with the politics of the music industry and decided to walk away from all of it in order to provide for my son. It killed me to walk away from it, but it was the only choice I felt I had.” Nick traces his memory and inspiration for being in movies back to the first movie he ever saw by himself, “Grease.” That movie changed Nick’s life, and ever since he wanted to be in the film industry. “On Cinco de Mayo of 1995, I was invited to a big industry party,” said Nick. “This is where I met my future wife, business partner, and best friend, Denise. It was love at first sight. We’ve been together ever since that night.” A published writer and lyricist, Denise has also spent years as a producer, production manager, and coordinator for networks like Oprah Winfrey Network, HBO, STYLE Network, HGTV, and more. A combination of connections and authentic talent began Nick’s professional career as a part-time stand-in on various movies. He explained, “Determined to help me pursue my passion for entertainment, Denise made a few calls and next thing I knew, she had me booked as a stand-in on a movie. Little did I know that this would be the beginning of my life long career in the entertainment industries.”
Knowing the risk and reward, Nick jumped on the opportunity and has been a stunt double for the last 20 years. His partnership with Travolta has taken him all over the United States and the world. Nick was first introduced to the First Coast in 2001 when filming “Basic,” starring Samuel L. Jackson and John Travolta. He had the opportunity to revisit once again in 2006 when filming “Lonely Hearts.” This time Nick and his family fell in love with the area and ended up purchasing a home in Amelia Island. That same year, the vice president of programming at First Coast News, Bonnie Solloway, approached Nick for the first pilot episode of First Coast Living. In 2008 while working on “The Taking of Pelham 123,” Nick released his debut album, “Forever Be Cool.” The project had started way back in 1996, and saw success in the radio world. After such an exciting Hollywood career, Nick explained his most dangerous stunt. During the filming of “From Paris with Love” in 2009, John Travolta and his partner are chasing a band of terrorists in a high-speed car pursuit. Nick had to hang himself out of an Audi traveling approximately 100 mph, holding a rocket launcher, while a professional driver zipped in and out of traffic. There is a part in the scene where Nick had to pull half of his body back into the car before it narrowly misses a semi truck. “I have to take my family into consideration before doing any stunt,” said Nick. “John is the first one to ask ‘what does Denise think about you doing this stunt?’ It’s not something you take lightly.”
PANSHOO KIDS INC Fast-forward a few years, Nick and his family have entered the publishing industry. Nick has always enjoyed reading and has been an avid fan of Dr. Seuss his entire life. Through the inspiration of his own children, Nick developed a children’s character known as Farful Foolong, which is a playful alien from the planet Oolong Panshoo. Through his character and his own private publishing firm, Nick hopes to re-establish a love for reading amongst the younger generations. Nick stated, “Panshoo Books LLC is a proud sponsor of Panshoo Kids Inc. The two organizations have joined forces to do a Florida Children’s Hospital Tour to provide a therapeutic and fun literary experience to the children and families of these hospitals. We’ve also teamed up to start a Northeast Florida School tour which will provide books and live readings to the children of title one schools.” Panshoo Kids Inc. aims to increase childhood literacy for a chance at a better adult life for less privileged kids. National statistics show that 1 in 4 children in America grow up without learning how to read, 37 percent of children arrive at kindergarten without the skills necessary for lifetime learning, and two-thirds of students who cannot read proficiently by the end of the 4th grade will end up in jail or on welfare.
“
The incredible response we are getting from the live readings has inspired us to think bigger than ourselves,” said Nick. “This issue affects our economy, reduces the competitiveness of our workforce and challenges our highest ideals. My wife, Denise, was deeply affected by the stats on early childhood literacy and the direct impact it has on a child’s future.
”
Nick added, “Denise started Panshoo Kids Inc., a nonprofit that aims to empower children everywhere with the opportunities, tools, and desire to become literate, confident, creative, and responsible beings, regardless of their social or economic background.” For more information, visit PanshooKids.org. 5 minutes with The Heavy Pets STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: The Heavy Pets are an American rock band that blends rhythm and blues, jazz, funk, disco, and reggae with rock and roll. Called “a living, breathing force of nature” by Relix Magazine, the Pets are known for their soulful song craft and powerhouse live performances. Continuing the momentum of their current EP series, The Heavy Pets recorded and released, “Stolen Smile” in the second half of 2014 amidst their rigorous tour schedule. The group became an instant SiriusXM radio sensation in 2007 with the release of their double disc debut album, “Whale.” First embraced by the jam scene for their raw talent, their crossover sound that is showcased on their follow-up eponymous release propelled them into the periphery of mainstream music and landed the record on the Huffington Post’s “Top 10 Albums of 2010” list. Returning to their acoustic roots on “Swim Out Past the Sun” from 2011, THP’s guitar duo set aside their electric axes for a more organic approach. The Pets followed up those polished efforts by releasing, “Everywhere Sessions: Volume 1” in 2012, recorded live in the studio with accompanying videos. In 2013, The Heavy Pets launched an ongoing series of self-produced EPs: “Two Horses” and “Rags and Aces,” which have both received heavy airplay on satellite radio. The Heavy Pets have taken the stage at Bonnaroo, Jam Cruise, Gathering of the Vibes, All Good, AURA and their namesake PetZoo, and performed with nearly all of the “who’s who” of the festival circuit and touring jam rock world. With a full tank of gas, wind in their sails, a new side project Beatles tribute show and a hot set of 80’s covers to offer festivals, The Heavy Pets joined Hoplite in the beginning of 2016, ready to expand their touring base and turn on new fans everywhere. YOUR LEGAL
CORNER ASK THE ATTORNEY JULY HOROSCOPE
Written by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire
Aries (March 21- April 19) You may be in need of some self-help books this month. There are no love prospects in your near future, and reading is something you can do while you are alone this month. Might as well read up on how to meet people while being ignored.
Libra (September 23 – October 22) It’s time you start having the fun. Normally a giver, Libra, but this month Jupiter is in Aries, your partnership house, and it is time you bravely ask for what you need. Don’t feel guilty about it either. The rest of us have been doing it for years.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Your passion has been reinvigorated this month. It’s time to not blend in with the background, but stand out for once. That crazy shirt or wild dress you bought, but haven’t worn. It’s time to shake the dust off of it and mingle.
Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) When the Gemini new moon eclipse happened, it brought power to your eighth house of intimacy and sex. Yes, there are at least eight of those houses. And with that, you should be giddy to get out there and meet some people. This month should not be dull for you.
Gemini (May 21 – June 21) This month, is more about fixing things than starting new ones. As much as you want to forget about the relationship that just had epic fail written all over it and move on, believe it or not, bringing closure to it makes you come off as less of a jerk.
Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) The partnership vibe is in the air all month. The Sun visits Gemini and Cancer this month, rulers of your committed and intimate relationship sectors. So if you have been a make-out bandit lately, this month you are going to be slowing down and finding more “quality time” with someone.
Cancer (June 22 – July 22) With the current alignment coming up this month, you are about to have a monumental situation. Either a long relationship is coming to a quick end, or you are about to embark on meeting a possible soulmate, if such things exist. Either way, neither will go unnoticed.
Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) You’re in touch with your feelings after an emotional six months, but maybe a little too in touch. With Jupiter going through Taurus, your fifth house of romance, you may finally be intimate with someone else this month.
Leo (July 23 – August 22) With Mars visiting Gemini this month, your casual connections will be at an all time high. Sure we all want a meaningful relationship, but you have to play the hand you’re dealt. It’s time to frolic and play the “get in, get out” card this month. Enjoy.
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) Cool, calm and casual? Not anymore. Passion, and perhaps some drama, ignites your sign this month, thanks to a procession of planets in Gemini, your fifth house of romance. You are feeling very reactive and charged-up this month, so you may want to think before you just pounce.
Virgo (August 23 – September 22) Neptune is in retrograde and with this, you are licking your love wounds. Everyone else is having fun, but you are emotionally scarred, and not up to meeting new people. It’s a shame because it’s summer-loving time.
Pisces (February 19 – March 20) Try being a valued friend this month. Instead of always agreeing with their heartache and sounding like an echo, try offering some real advice or something helpful instead of, “yeah, I know what you mean.”

What is your area of law? Divorce and Family Law for Women.
How long have you practiced law? 16 years.
What brought you to Jacksonville? I am a native of Jacksonville, and after law school returned to raise my family.
How did you choose your area of law? Family law provides a unique opportunity to help people accomplish things they cannot do otherwise. It is extremely rewarding to see women conquer their fears and the stigma of divorce to gain independence.
What is your greatest accomplishment as an attorney? I find great satisfaction in going to trial and winning alimony awards for my clients who did not value themselves enough, and their former husbands also placed no value on their contribution to the marriage.
What is a frequently asked question you receive from your clients? How do we find out what he makes and where the money is?
How would you answer the above question? The rules of family law provide for full disclosure of financial documents, and even when the other party is difficult in producing financials, we are skilled in finding the money and records.
Anything you would like to add? Women so often underestimate their strength and ability to make it on their own. It is an honor to not only represent women, but watch them grow and build self confidence in their abilities.
