Everyone from former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein to former Olympic coach Larry Nasser has been held accountable for sex crimes. It’s the latest fallout from the sweeping #MeToo movement that continues to change the culture and encourages more women to come forward and finally, be believed. “It’s so important that you believe someone who has the courage to come forward with their story,” says Hogshead-Makar. She herself was sexually assaulted while a college student at Duke University. That harrowing personal experience is part of what drives her incredible activism, including lobbying Congress to change laws around the reporting and prosecution of sexual violence. BUZZ ON VETERANS

with Jeff Shuford from Tech on Vets

Celeste Everett CEO of The Vegan Warriors

Why do you think veterans make outstanding entrepreneurs? How do you transition from the service to the world of business? Veterans make outstanding entrepreneurs due to the values we learned in the military. For example, teamwork is one of the principles we practice within the military. Many people from all over the nation come together as a team to complete a mission effectively. As an entrepreneur, you need partners that believe in your business and help you move it forward. Transitioning from the service to the world of business wasn’t too complicated. For me, the idea of starting my business was something always on my mind. I thought of several companies to begin before I accepted to start in the technology industry. Once I decided on what I wanted to do, I started researching and aligning myself with business minded people. Then, I completed the paperwork required to open my business. Immediately, I began providing services to local clients. What inspired you to become a Vetrepreneur? My inspiration for me becoming a Vetrepreneur stemmed from my childhood experiences. My dad worked a full-time job, and he was a freelance photographer too. I saw how he ran his photography business. I was involved with helping him as being his model and assisting as needed. Hence, there are many photos of me as I grew up. Also, my dad would drive me around my hometown of Folkston, GA to family members who own their businesses. They had successful restaurants, gas stations and other business ventures. As I observed this as a child, it inspired me to want enterprises of my own. Also, my maternal grandmother had several businesses. She taught me a financial aspect of her company. Who or what has influenced you most in your journey? My dad, James Everett, influenced me the most on my journey. Seeing my dad evolve as an entrepreneur was impressive to me. Whenever I need advice on anything business related, he would guide me. Since day one, he has been very supportive of me being a Vetrepreneur. I recalled he bought my first set of business cards. It was something he wanted to do for me. It revealed to me that he cared about my business, and he wanted to see me succeed. Learn More About The Vegan Warriors at TheVeganWarriors.com

COMMUNITY FOCUS A closer look at our local nonprofit community

During Hurricane Irma, Jacksonville residents suffered severe damage to their property and civic infrastructure as a result of flooding. Dredging and straightening the rivers increase the risk of flooding because rivers revert to their natural path when flood waters rise. The St. Johns Riverkeeper’s mission is to be an independent voice that defends, advocates and activates others to protect and restore the St. Johns River. Lisa Rinaman, chief advocate of the St. Johns Riverkeeper, explains why protecting the integrity of the St. Johns river is important. “One of the reasons we flooded so badly after Hurricane Irma is that we’re our own worst enemy,” Lisa said. “We have antiquated infrastructure put in place in the 1970s and before. In changing the natural flow of our river we’ve created a superhighway for the Atlantic Ocean.” Lisa continues to advocate for the conservation of the St. Johns River and protect the wildlife and people around it. From the creators of Wet Hot American Summer comes a comedy that is “utterly ridiculous, completely stupid and thoroughly absurd.” The show stars character Jack Greenberg as the sheriff of Teaneck, N.J. Unfortunately, the town is run by Tad Theaterman, a crime boss armed with henchmen and a legion of hookers and gigolos.

Everyone’s favorite flying car comes to life in the live musical adaption of the beloved film. Eccentric inventor, Caractacus Potts, restores an old race car with the help of his two children, only to discover the car has magical flying abilities. Trouble ensues when the evil Baron Bomburst discovers the car and wants it for himself.

The clown pictures his own funeral taking place in a carnival atmosphere, watched over by quietly caring angels. Juxtaposing the large with the small, the ridiculous with the tragic and the magic of perfection with the charm of imperfection, the show highlights the strength and fragility of the clown, as well as his wisdom and kindness, to illustrate the portion of humanity that is within each of us. The music turns lyrical and playful carrying Corteo through a timeless celebration in which illusion teases reality.

ARTS UNLEASHED

Rachel Huff Smith Solomon Dixon

RachelHuffSmith.com

TheSoloArtStudio.com

Rachel Huff Smith is a multi-media fine artist working primarily in acrylic and oil paint. Her work is inspired by life experiences such as motherhood and grieving the simultaneous deaths of her mother and grandmother. Her painting series “Circumvolve: Narratives and Responses to Life Cycles” was presented in conjunction with her 2017-2018 Student Artistin-Residency at the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville (MOCA). She graduated from the University of North Florida in Spring 2018 with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Solomon Dixon is an accomplished artist whose work focuses primarily on African American themes and social awareness. For Solomon Dixon painting is a cultural and spiritual journey that started in childhood and continues to this day. Although born in South Carolina, Solomon Dixon spent most of his life far from his home town where he continued to develop an impressive and versatile artistic style that some say surpasses many other modern African American artists. During his early years as an artist, Dixon experimented with different media and style including social realism, surrealism, figurative abstraction, portrait painting, abstract expressionism, graphic design, photography, cartoons, illustration, Pressman, and now Internet design. Today, Solomon uses every technique necessary to complete his art pieces that often reflects his childhood, spiritual background, social awareness and African American heritage. Dixon’s art merges African and American cultural themes and social consciousness to make powerful cross-cultural statements. His paintings convey a deep sense of spirituality, majesty, dignity, strength and culture. Solomon still believes that as an African American Artist “we should always stay true to our culture and to help uplift the community.”

Before UNF, she took several years off as a full-time mom. Prior to motherhood, she taught art in schools and art centers and worked in advertising after completing her first art degree. Each of these experiences influence her art practice. Her greatest hope for her work is to find expression and experience reconciliation of life’s experiences – for both herself in creating the work and the viewer.

ARTS IN THE KNOW Jacksonville Fire Museum

When you step foot into the Jacksonville Fire Museum, you step foot into history. In the early 1900s, the structure located on Catherine Street was known as “Catherine Street Fire Station #3.” Much of Downtown Jacksonville was still in the rebuilding phase from The Great Fire of 1901. In 1886, the Jacksonville City Council passed an ordinance that began the Jacksonville Fire Department. The entire Fire Department originally consisted of just three stations and 17 men. Station #3 was manned entirely by African-Americans and completed all operations with a single horse-drawn wagon. After the station’s disbandment in 1933, the building was used to host department shop facilities and then as a storage facility. The Catherine Street Fire Station was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places on June 13, 1972, and turned into the Jacksonville Fire Museum in 1982. More than a century later, the Fire Museum, adjacent to Metropolitan Park, is home to a variety of exhibits and artifacts that depict the evolution of Jacksonville’s fire service from its start in the 1850s to the present. The city’s fire service has seen the introduction of motorized vehicles in the 1920s, the creation of Jacksonville’s Rescue Division in the 1960s and the establishment of JFRD’s Hazardous Materials team in the 1970s. The museum is currently closed for renovations, but is expected to open Fall of 2018. Jacksonville Fire Museum Station 3

SIGNATURES IN THE DIGITAL AGE By Kelly Karstaedt, Shareholder, Karstaedt & Stanko, P.A.

The first thing any good lawyer will tell you is that if it’s not in writing, it doesn’t exist. Under the law there are sometimes ways to get around that. However, the best practice for any successful business is to reduce every agreement to writing and have it signed by all parties involved. Having a written contract in place with your clients, vendors, employees and the like is essential to protecting yourself and your business. A valid contract requires, among other things, an agreement of the parties. A good way to show that each party assents to the agreement is by requiring a signature. Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary defines a signature as a person’s name written in that person’s handwriting. But a signature was not, and is not, always this dictionary definition. As the human culture evolves, so does our method of validating our written works. The act of “signing” dates back to the ancient Sumerians, who used symbols and pictures to lay claim to their works. The use of a person’s name did not come into play until the 1st century AD. Over time, it became more and more the standard to use a signature to acknowledge your work or enter into an agreement. Those who could not read or write often used an “X” as their mark while literate individuals signed their full name. Until the last few decades, the only way to sign a contract was the traditional handwritten method. So, what does it mean to “sign” an agreement in the digital age then? The days of putting pen to paper are quickly going by the wayside. Schools around the nation have all but eliminated teaching basic handwriting and cursive in favor of typing courses. This trend is understandable given the current climate of using computers to handle most of our written communication needs. But now businesses, who enter into contracts nearly every day, must progress with the times as well. States began passing laws that allowed for electronic signatures (e-signatures) in the mid-1990s. These laws gave signatures created using electronic methods, such as typing your name or clicking a box on a computer screen, the same legal effect as a handwritten signature. On June 30, 2000, the U.S. government signed the Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act into law, standardizing the use of e-signatures and records throughout the country. Since then countries all over the world have adopted similar laws to account for the growing use of e-signatures. Florida has a statute on the books that specifically states an electronic signature shall have the same force and effect as a written signature. As a business owner, you must make the decision whether to require a signature or not on your written agreements. From a legal standpoint, not every written agreement must be signed. However, the Uniform Commercial Code as adopted by Florida requires an agreement for the sale of goods $500 or more be in writing and signed by the person against whom enforcement is sought. Other state and federal laws also require certain types of contracts to be signed by either one, both or all parties. To avoid confusion or failing to have signatures on documents legally requiring them, it may be in your best interest to require all parties to sign every written contract. The next step is to decide how you want to accept a signature: hand-written or electronic? A handwritten signature is the default method of acknowledging a contractual agreement. Electronic agreements and e-signatures require additional capabilities and may not be practical or even necessary for many businesses. Some items to consider when making this decision are: How big is your company – in particular, the size of your budget and the number of contracts you enter into on a regular basis? Where are the individuals signing the documents located? How technologically capable is your main consumer base who will be entering into these contracts? What is your document retention policy (such as ability to store original signature documents versus electronic storage capabilities)? Do you have a webpage and web-based software capable of utilizing online forms and e-signatures? Times are changing and there is virtually no reason to keep a pen in your pocket anymore. Now we can exchange contact information via text, take notes using our fingertips and make a purchase with a wand that doesn’t require ink. While many companies no longer engage in paper transactions and only accept e-signatures, there are still many others that need to use the handwritten method. There are parts of this world, even in the United States, that do not have reliable access to electricity and computers. Also, there are many individuals who choose not to utilize the advances made in technology (does anyone’s grandparents come to mind here?). It is important to remember that having options, even in the case of accepting signatures, can be a great thing. A final thought: over 200 years ago, a man we may otherwise have never remembered became famous for having the biggest signature on one of the most important documents in our nation’s history. Without his taking a pen to paper, generations of Americans may not have been inspired to perfect their own “John Hancock.” Your signature is something entirely unique to you, that you create and adapt as you age and that cannot be accurately reproduced by others. Do you really want to give that up? Kelly Karstaedt is an attorney and shareholder of Karstaedt & Stanko, P.A., a business law firm focusing on providing in-house counsel corporate law services to small to mid-size businesses and nonprofit organizations. Karstaedt was a business litigation attorney before turning her efforts to the transactional side of law. Two Thumbs Up How Good Food Should Taste Pho DimSum

Article by Anna Eatz Jax

the facts

When: 9866-8, Baymeadows Rd Price: $ Contact: Facebook.com/Phodimsum/

Fried Turnip Cakes After a long drought, Dim Sum restaurants are popping up in Jacksonville like flowers after the rain. The latest entry is Pho Dimsum, formally a Thai restaurant in the Baymeadows area of town. Many of the same staff is still there, so I found service a seamless experience. The decor is sparse yet neat and clean. If you’re looking for carts to be rolling up and down the aisles, please return on the weekend. Shanghai Dumplings (Soup Dumplings) After looking at the offerings, I selected a few of my favorite items - one of them being the Soup Dumpling. I have not seen these on any Dim Sum menu in town. The Soup Dumpling is one of the more delicate dumplings to make, and possibly why it is in low abundance. This particular order of dumplings certainly ranks up there as some of the best I have ever tasted. Flavorful little bags, the stuffing bathed in beautiful broth covered by a tender dumpling skin, perfectly formed, accompanied with a ramekin of red vinegar. The recipient of this dish may choose to pour some of the liquid over the top before biting into this magic little morsel. I have eaten these served with a straw so you can pierce the skin and suck out the broth before enjoying the stuffing. I indeed preferred this method. BBQ Pork Stuffed Rice Roll The next to arrive was the steamed rice noodle with BBQ pork. Usually the most savory of the rice noodle dishes, this came in somewhat flat with minimal flavor in the pork, the rice noodles and sauce made up for some of the blandness.

Fried Shrimp Balls No Dim Sum meal would be complete for me without an order of Shrimp Balls; the chef redeemed himself here. Wonderfully browned, crispy and oh so very moist inside - the sweet shrimp stuffing didn’t require any additive to make this a tasty dish. Leek Dumplings The Leek Dumplings again hit the mark. Fried dumplings stuffed with tender leek fronds and whites were so very flavorful with no hint of bitterness. Well browned dumpling skin was moist and delicious. Fried Turnip Cakes I should have stopped there, but one more plate I needed to try was the fried Turnip Cakes: a bit light on flavor, but crispy and not overloaded with oil as I have experienced on other occasions. I added a bit of spicy oil to kick it up a bit. Overall I would give my experience a ”let’s go back and eat again” vote. I love Dim Sum, with all its many variations and flavors, and if you have never indulged in this Asian treat, I highly recommend a trip to this restaurant.

GRAB A BITE NEW RESTAURANTS

EL JEFE JAX

Edgewood Eljefejax.com Welcome to Jacksonville Chef Scott Schwartz’s Tex-Mex concept dedicated to celebrating the diverse cuisines of America’s Southern borderlands. The menu includes all your favorites with a full bar as well.

Seasons Dim Sum Asian Restaurants are popping up all over town, some good, some not so good. Of those we tried, this had to be one of my favorite, Seasons Dumplings. Seasons Dumplings is an unassuming spot in a strip mall, which was way more than I expected. Not only is it a restaurant, but also a bakery. All items are made from scratch daily with the freshest ingredients available. Owner Larry shared with us the process of how the loaves of bread and buns are made fresh each day, believe me when I tell you it’s a long, involved process. We did not sample any bakery items the day we visited, that will be another review. For today let’s concentrate on the food. One of the first dishes we tried was the braised beef soup. Served with or without noodles, we chose the no noodle version this time. From the moment the plate was put on the table, there was a glorious aroma of 5 spice: the rich broth with rainbows of small fat bubbles floating on top of the braised meat. Served with a side of Asian greens similar to cabbage, this soup was like nothing I have ever tasted.

From Shark Tank to Jacksonville comes a bakery with a twist. Not your typical cinnamon roll shop being 100% vegan with a variety of flavors just waiting for you!

Our next choice was the pan-fried dumplings. The order of eight dumplings was almost enough for a meal, based on the size and stuffing in each dumpling. The lightly browned dumplings contained a rich pork stuffing and were served with a soy-like dipping sauce. They were so good we ordered a second helping.

YAFA GRILL AND CAFE

Baymeadows & John’s Bluff Yafagrills.com Family-owned Middle Eastern hospitality with two locations in Jacksonville serving authentic food with the finest and freshest ingredients to bring you the experience of traditional Jerusalem cuisine.

No visit to a Dim Sum restaurant would be complete without sampling the buns. We chose two flavors: the Pork Napa and the Stuffed Chive. My usual problem with buns is a lack of stuffing, but that wasn’t a problem at Seasons - these buns were chocked full of flavorful stuffing. Our last selection was the Chinese Scallion Pancake, perhaps not my favorite but still an excellent option on the menu. Just a little dry for my taste but the flavor was there for sure. This spot is bare bones with plastic utensils and Styrofoam dishes, but don’t let that put you off. The food is so good it matters not what vessel it is served in; I have experienced some pretty sad meals served with china and crystal. Gather the besties and go stuff your face.

CATCHIN' A BUZZ Interview by Anna Eatz Jax

RICHARD BAILYS

Five Points Tavern some full house Thursdays. Much of it depends on the weather–5 Points is a walking area, and many of our patrons walk to dine with us.

Who creates the craft cocktails for the bar? It’s collaboration between the owners and bartenders. If we have ideas we kick them around then do some taste testing. We are currently working on drinks for the spring.

What do you want more people to know about your business?

Recently I had the pleasure of interviewing Richard Bailys of Five Points Tavern in the Riverside area of Jacksonville, FL. Richie talked about bar life and how the Tavern has quickly become the go-to place for locals interested in some top-tier food and drink. A comfortable, renovated old house welcomes all visitors who are seeking a fantastic dining experience or a fun craft cocktail on the patio.

When you walk by now with the addition of our patio furniture, it is eye appealing and welcoming. It’s an old house, a bit unassuming and, like everything else in life, don’t judge a book by its cover. We believe we are a hidden gem here in 5 Points, and Jacksonville in general. The food speaks for itself: made with the freshest ingredients available, drinks well thought out, service top notch. We do everything possible to make our guests feel at home.

What is unique about your bar area? We have the outside bar patio area and an inside bar–food service is available in both areas. What I believe makes us unique and sets us apart is the service and dedication of the team. Five Points Tavern is a family run operation, so working with the owners, I feel a part of that family. We strive to extend that feel out to our guests, making every effort to create an atmosphere of comfort whether they are having dinner with us or just stopping in for a cocktail. I know the names of all my regulars and what they prefer to drink. My customers have told me how much that is appreciated.

When is Happy Hour? It indeed is a Happy Hour, starting at 5 p.m. when we open and running until 6 p.m. That includes $4 house spirits, draft beer and house wines.

Tell us about your best-selling drink. The Margaret Street is way up there, and the Hot Lolita–two very different drinks. The Margaret Street is fresh, crisp and especially tasty this time of year, almost on the savory side where the Hot Lolita is spicy, tangy a little sweet; opposite drinks similar attention.

Do you serve any local spirits or brews? We do have some in-house spirits from Manifest Distillery and our local brew includes Engine 15 J’ville Lager that is a light lager and Bold City Killer Whale Cream Ale. We also have two rotating taps in keeping with the seasonal brews.

Who creates the craft cocktails for the bar? It’s collaboration between the owners and bartenders. If we have ideas we kick them around then do some taste testing. We are currently working on drinks for the spring.

What compliments do you hear most often from your customers? If directed at me, it is all about the drinks. But in general, it’s all about the food. Every dish I have sampled and recipes I have sold, our patrons are well pleased by the quality and composition.

What is the busiest night of the week?

It is a toss-up between Friday and Saturday, but we also have experienced 24

Ruby Beach Brewing quietly opened on Saturday, May 26 over the Memorial Day weekend. Set in the former Zeta Brewing location, Ruby Beach Brewing underwent a re-branding and physical renovation during the first half of 2018. Word of the closing of Zeta and re-branding to the new concept surfaced in a January 8 press release by Owner Mark Vandeloo, in which he expressed a renewed focus on craft beer. Drawing from local history, Ruby Beach Brewing takes its name from the early establishment of “Ruby Beach” in 1884. According to sources, investors of the old Jacksonville & Atlantic Railroad looked at the possibility of creating a resort area along the beach. The first settlers, William Scull and Eleanor Kennedy Scull, built the community’s first house. Eleanor named the settlement “Ruby Beach” after their daughter (the area was later renamed Pablo Beach and is now Jacksonville Beach). Following construction and renovations at the property, the inside of the new Ruby Beach Brewing

JULY HOROSCOPE

has a larger, more open, feel. The center bar has been removed and the new bar is positioned along one wall. Wood planks from an old pier are the focal point of the bar, creating a beachy, boardwalk look. Long wood tables sit in the middle of the space, with additional wooden tables and chairs along the brew-house side. If you’re looking for sea breezes, the venue still features an open-air front patio. The bar features 24 taps, including Ruby Beach Brewing house beers brewed on-site, and a variety of guest taps, including cider and kombucha. A full liquor selection is also offered. On a Memorial Day visit, the tap list included 11 Ruby Beach beers, an impressive showing for an opening weekend. Guests of the former Zeta Brewing may recognize several of the names on the beer list, such as Twin Finn Lager, Ruby Beach Pale Wheat Ale (made with raspberry puree) and American Garage IPA (now featuring rotating hops and seasonal citrus peel).

Pours of beers are by the pint (with a few exceptions) or by flight of four. Draft beers are reasonably priced at $5-6 per glass (a few higher ABV beers are priced at $7). Crowlers (32 oz. cans; $10-12) are also available to-go. The on-site kitchen offers an assortment of finger foods and hand-helds: pretzel sticks, cheese curds, fried pork rinds, nacho fries, hummus and flatbread combo, shrimp tacos, fried shrimp basket, roast beef hoagie, roast pork sandwich, burgers and mini-brats. With the renewed emphasis on craft beer at Ruby Beach, the place already feels more like a brewery and tap room than it did before, and local beer geeks will be sure to watch the beers that Head Brewer Billy Arthur brings out of the seven-barrel brewhouse going forward. Ruby Beach Brewing is located at 131 – 1st Ave. N, in the heart of Jacksonville Beach, a short walk to the beachfront.

ARIES (MARCH 21- APRIL 19) It’s time to let them go. Sure your mate may be fun, but keeping someone around for a trophy isn’t cool. Time to find someone who you’re really into. Anyways, trophies are nothing more than dust collectors. TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20) Friends with benefits, anyone? While your steady-loving sign isn’t going anywhere good this month, doesn’t mean some classless body bumping with an acquaintance can’t happen. It may not be the fairy tale you envision, but it’s better than being alone. GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 21) I am glad you are able to speak your mind when asked things, but maybe, just maybe you should try using that filter between your brain and your tongue. This might come in handy next time you talk and embarrass yourself. CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 22) Looks like you need to start spreading that charm around. Magnetic Venus is in Cancer making you the target for Cupid this month. So go enjoy and get stung by that arrow that’s currently in the crosshairs planted on your back. Goin’ to be a good month for you Cancer. LEO (JULY 23 – AUGUST 22) Seems your current romantic tactics are not producing your desired results. Well, let’s change it up. Try a different online profile. If you don’t have a good picture, use one of someone else that does. It’s the internet! No one’s honest. It’s almost expected to be a letdown when they meet you in person. VIRGO (AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 22) This month you need to concentrate on yourself and get things back in order. All those recent late nights and stepping out of yourself may have been “the most fun ever,” but we all know who you really are. And you’re not that much fun.

LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 22) You think you are so clever reading between the lines. Sometimes, no just means no. Sometimes leave actually means go home. Not everything has a hidden meaning. So stop being the only person in the room laughing and looking like a fool. SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 – NOVEMBER 21) So you think you’ve found love or a love-interest and you want everyone to know. Whoa! Easy there. First, see how things go before shouting from the rooftops. There are subtle ways to let people know. Act like you’ve been there before and others will actually want to hear more. SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 – DECEMBER 21) Know that person you’ve wanted to ask out, but you’re afraid your friends will make fun of you for doing so? Well, this is the month to do it! Show your friends how great he or she is. And if they end up being a dud, I’m sure your friends will eventually stop bringing up the time you dated “The Mistake.” CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 – JANUARY 19) Looks like you’re going to have a very intimate relationship with yourself this month. Take yourself out and get your hair done, massage, whatever makes you feel good because you’ll have extra money for your loneliness. AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 – FEBRUARY 18) It’s a great month to turn the page in your love life. That is the nicest way to say what you currently are doing isn’t working. Sure you may have someone, but seriously? That person forever? It’s never too late to start over… I mean, turn the page. See, it sounds so nice. PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20) Try being a valued friend this month. Instead of always agreeing with their heartache and sounding like an echo, try offering some real advice or something helpful instead of, “yeah, I know what you mean.”
