Making a Difference: nonprofit leaders in our community
“
Five years ago, the Jacksonville Public Education Fund was just emerging from an idea to a reality. Today, we have a team of 12 and JPEF is seen as a model around the country for what a local education fund can do. We believe that in order for our city to reach its full potential, every child must
be prepared to succeed in the future. Join us in advocating for universally high-quality public schools for all students!”
TREY CSAR Jacksonville Public Education Fund | JaxPEF.org
Trey Csar has grown JPEF into an active voice for universally high-quality public schools in Jacksonville since 2009. Previously, Trey worked as a youth organizer in San Francisco, taught in an inner-city elementary school in Houston, and served as assistant principal at a school for students who evacuated to Houston following Hurricane Katrina. THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON I’VE INTERVIEWED THIS MONTH He’s well-known as “the most interesting man in Jacksonville,” so naturally, it was an easy choice this month to write about historian, author and “arts agitator” Wayne Wood. Wayne has accomplished so many things in his life, from founding Riverside Avondale Preservation (RAP), to creating the Riverside Arts Market, Friends of Hemming Park, and more. But he may have just topped himself with the inaugural “Wayne Woodstock,” a music festival at his historic home to raise money for Party Benefit & Jam, which puts together events for other nonprofits.
United Way of Northeast Florida UWNEFL.com
United Way has been a leader in driving positive and lasting change in education, income and health. United Way brings together expert agencies to make change happen efficiently, effectively and responsibly. The result is research-based, data-driven initiatives that allow United Way to make long-term improvements so children enter kindergarten ready to succeed and stay in school through graduation; individuals and families are able to achieve financial stability; and everyone has the opportunity to live a healthy and engaged life.
The Easy Peasy Kids Fitness Foundation
Local music stars ranging from Canary in the Coalmine to the John CarverBand, Mama Blue, Arvid Smith, and Flagship Romance all performed to big crowds on Wood’s porch and balcony.
EasyPeasyJax.com
The mission of Easy Peasy Kids Fitness Foundation (EPK) is to make fitness fun and available for ALL kids. EPK produces and promotes creative fitness events that encourage kids to exercise. EPK offers scholarships for kids that could otherwise not afford to participate. Easy Peasy Kids then donates the majority of the proceeds to local children’s health/fitness charities, such as the Police Athletic League, YMCA, Marathon High and Shannon Miller Foundation.
Channeling the groovy spirit of the original iconic 1969 event that celebrated “peace, love, and music,” let’s hope Wayne Woodstock becomes an annual event! And keep listening to WJCT’s First Coast Connect each weekday morning at 9am on 89.9FM to hear from the most compelling newsmakers of the First Coast!

Arts Unleashed
Be On The Look Out For
JEFF LUQUE
J
eff Luque is a Jacksonville Beach native with a natural gift. His ability to make the realistic out of the unrealistic in terms of color is something that truly should be experienced in person. His current series of paintings, Girl with Flowers, features five stunning works that can be seen at the CoRK Arts District. Jeff started painting at the age of 23, though he always enjoyed drawing. In high school he had a natural interest in sketching and drawing. “I was shy, so instead of approaching a girl I liked, I would draw her a rose instead.” One day, Jeff decided to explore a new medium. “I just went to Michael’s and picked up the biggest canvas they had and a brush and three paints.” And with that, Jeff Luque became a painter. The painting he created that day is now hanging in a ballet school in Australia. His art has also been shown in Beijing, Hong Kong, Paris and Los Angeles. Though Jeff has moved around, spending three and a half years in New Mexico and seven in North Carolina, his time in Jacksonville seems to fit. The idea for his current project was spawned in New Mexico, but never truly came to fruition until he was here in Jacksonville. “I love Jacksonville and I love what’s happening with the art scene. There was a right time for me to be in those places. Now is the right time for this.” CoRK has allowed him to have the space to paint and the subject matter to inspire him is plentiful.

enneth Balser was raised in a small Midwest town. After school, he drifted down to Texas, working the oilfields in the desert. Tiring of the desert, he moved to Florida, eventually settling in Jacksonville. He’s been a working artist since 1996 and a member of the Art Center from the beginning.
Kenneth’s mediums range from the softness of pastel to the industrial strength of steel. Growing up in the Midwest, he has a fondness for barns, decaying buildings, and nature. His work ranges from photo realism to impressionism to cubism. He has displayed all over Florida but calls Jacksonville home. His latest show opens July 1 during Artwalk and runs until August. July 16 – Sept. 7
July 18 – Oct. 25
Human Images of Nurture will spotlight the development stages of life. Visual artists produced works that portray nurture in both the human race and the animal race. The artwork will showcase parental care, protection, shielding from hurt, comfort, and feeding. People, animals and ideas all need to be nurtured.
Tallahassee-based artist Joelle Dietrick researches the complexity of global economic systems and transforms data glitches into site-specific paintings of architectural forms. Dietrick’s recent work is based on geolocation data in cargo ships and shipping containers at the Jacksonville Port Authority. SARAH BOONE, Executive Director of Theatre Jacksonville BUZZ: Tell us a little about the history of Theatre Jacksonville. SB: Theatre Jacksonville is a volunteer-based community theatre whose
mission is to enrich lives and broaden cultural understanding through community participation in theatre arts. It’s located in San Marco Square and is the oldest community theatre in Florida. We are beginning our 96th season of plays and musicals and also offer many educational outreach programs including Camp Theatre Jacksonville. partner of Cultural Fusion, celebrating 2015 as The Year of the River (#YOTR),
BUZZ: What is the goal of Camp Theatre? we’ve woven in themes of environmental awareness and revitalization of our SB: Our goal at Camp Theatre urban core into the storyline of our show.
Jacksonville is to provide a safe and encouraging environment within which our campers (ages 7-13) can freely express their creativity in the dramatic arts. theatre? SB: The campers spend a week getting to know each other and our instructing staff while learning/reviewing the basics of being on stage and creating stories. In the second week, they’re introduced to the full show. They’ll be presenting at the end of our time together and will take part in camp-wide auditions for said production. This audition doesn’t dictate whether a child will or will not be in our show, as all our campers sing, dance, and act in our final production, but it gives them the experience being in the audition environment. Once casting is complete, the script, music, and choreography for our production becomes the curriculum for the remainder of camp. Campers learn their lines, blocking, music, and choreography and begin to rehearse the full show in sequential order. In our final week together, we hold rehearsals for the show on stage at Theatre Jacksonville, culminating in three performances for the campers’ family and friends.
Players By The Sea Long-running Broadway hit musical “Aida” rocks at Players by the Sea! The Players by the Sea summer musical is always the season’s most eagerlyanticipated show. Exciting and unexpected choices consistently play to soldout houses and enliven the summer scene at the Beaches. This year the lavish musical “Aida,” with music and lyrics by Elton John and Tim Rice, rocks the Main Stage July 17-August 8. Originally considered for an animated film by Disney, Sir Elton opted to make it a Broadway musical instead. Using the plot of the opera by Guiseppe Verdi, he updated the story of star-crossed lovers in ancient Egypt with a thrilling rock score. It became a long-running, Tony Award-winning hit. Aida, a Nubian princess, falls in love with her captor, the dashing Egyptian captain Radames. Can the love of Aida and Radames survive palace intrigue, the endless war between their countries, and their own divided loyalties? Players’ Associate Director Bradley Akers is in the director’s chair in his first musical assignment. Music direction is by Zeek Smith, with choreography by Nichole Ignacio. Pelican Award-winner Kerri Alexander plays Aida, with Devin Reardon as Radames and Sadie La Manna as Amneris. The show also features Harrison Breault, Willie Beaton, Carol Hardern, Gregory Hughes and Rob Banks. The ensemble includes Michael Fisher, Kyle Geary, Brandon Hines, Cristian Mercado, Eric Yarham, Brittany Harmon, Lauren Sheldon, Essence Williams, and Ashley Yarham. Performances are July 17, 18, 23-25, 30-31, August 1, 6-8 at 8 p.m. Admission is $28. Thursday Student Nights offer half price admission with valid ID. Pet-Friendly Fun in Jax By Holly Brown
It’s time to get out and enjoy the beautiful summer weather. Who says you have to leave your dog at home while you go play? While you’re putting on your flip flops and your sunscreen, don’t forget to grab the dog leash, water bowl and pooch on your way out the door. There are several places in Jacksonville for you to take your furry friend and enjoy the day together. Remember – be mindful of hot asphalt on your dog’s paws. Protect them by walking in the grass and avoiding the hottest parts of the day. You can also buy a pair of booties for their paws for extra protection. Also, remember to keep them hydrated!
One option for a day of fun is to swing by one of Jacksonville’s several dog parks. Here’s a list of a few in the area: DOGWOOD PARK: Located off of Salisbury Road, this is an off-leash park. Dogwood is a 42-acre private country club providing many amenities for both you and your dog. Visit their website at JaxDogs.com for park hours, fees and additional information. POOCHIE’S DOG PARK: This private dog park, located in Orange Park, is family owned and operated. Visit the website at PoochiesPark.com for more information and membership prices.
After you’ve run, jumped and played at the dog park, you might be hungry! Check out the places around Jacksonville where you can grab a bite to eat with your paw buddy sitting right next to you. Leashed, well-mannered dogs are allowed at the below restaurants in the outside dining area: BRICK RESTAURANT: 3585 Saint Johns Ave. BISTRO AIX: 1440 San Marco PUSSER’S CARIBBEAN GRILLE: 816 H A1A N. • Ponte Vedra Beach (outside waterfront dining area)

KATHERYN ABBY HANNA PARK & BEACH: Located off Wonderwood Drive. There are many activities to do here - walking around with your four-legged friend is just one. Mega Pet Adoption Events Help Dogs and Cats in Need By Nicole Brose
First Coast No More Homeless Pets (FCNMHP) works with many animal welfare groups to supplement and expand their existing programs, such as organizing several large-scale adoption events. Shelters and rescues are asked to bring their pets for adoption and, to date, more than 8,700 dogs and cats have found homes at these events. These are among the largest adoption events in the country, with upwards of 1,100 pets can find homes in one weekend. The focus of FCNMHP is to end the killing of dogs and cats in shelters in our community, Northeast Florida and the nation. Everything FCNMHP does has this pinpointed focus. In thirteen short years, Jacksonville has gone from one of worst cities based on how many dogs and cats died in shelters, to now being a model city. FCNMHP has created a comprehensive and collaborative set of programs to this end, many of which have been fully implemented by other communities. To date, tens of thousands of dogs and cats nationwide have been saved from deaths that just don’t need to occur. One story from last July’s Mega Pet Adoption Event centers on Hooch. Hooch is a senior yellow Labrador retriever, believed to be about 11 years old. He was dumped at Nassau Animal Care and Control with heartworm disease and was moving very slowly. Hooch had the will to live and FCNMHP wanted to save this poor elderly dog and find him a home. FCNMHP’s Mega Pet Adoption Events bring together over 8,000 people who enter the doors of the Jacksonville Fairgrounds. Margaret and Robert Warden saw Hooch at last July’s event and knew he deserved to live out his last days being loved and in a home -not lying on a concrete floor at a shelter. The Wardens were told he may not live long, but they didn’t care; they knew the right thing to do. First Coast No More Homeless Pets’ Angel Fund paid for his medical treatment and started him on the road to ridding him of his heartworm disease. The Angel Fund helps provide medical care for dogs “[FCNMHP’s] Mega Pet Adoption and cats whose owners cannot afford Events are amazing, with up to pay for the care or who are homeless. To everyone’s surprise, Hooch recently enjoyed a great one-year anniversary in his new beach home! He is heartworm-free and enjoys long walks on the beach with his best fur friend, who is also a Labrador, and his new mom and dad.
to 1,000 dogs and cats being adopted in one weekend. If it weren’t for [the] event one year ago, we would have never found Hooch and he probably would have died of his illness and without a forever family of his own,” says Maggie Warden.

Pit Sisters Offers Unique Program to Keep Pets with Their Families
Pit Sisters, a Jacksonville-based animal welfare group, has launched an innovative new program aimed at keeping pets with their families. The program is offered in targeted areas of Duval and Clay counties where the highest number of people turn in their animals to animal shelters. The Pit Sisters Mobile Training Program offers free training to people and their dogs to help with the most common training issues. Pit Sisters was able to launch this mobile training program due to grant funding received from Animal Farm Foundation and Best Friends Animal Society.
“
We are so pleased to be able to offer this much-needed service to our community,” said Jen Deane, president of Pit Sisters. “Training issues are common and hiring a trainer can be expensive, so we wanted to offer this program to help keep pets with their families. We are grateful to Animal Farm Foundation and Best Friends Animal Society for their support of our program.” The Pit Sisters Mobile Training Program brings a van with a certified trainers to various locations (published at PitSisters.org) to help families and their pets with issues such as excessive barking, potty training, leash pulling, dog reactivity and more.
“
We were able to get a van donated but it is in pretty rough shape. We desperately need a newer van to be able to continue our mission of keeping pets with their families,” said Deane.
To donate to the Pit Sisters Mobile Training Program Van Fund, please PayPal Sisters@PitSisters.org and reference Mobile Training, or contact Pit Sisters via email at Sisters@PitSisters.org. For information on upcoming Mobile Training sessions or for training questions, call (904) 337-9507 or email MobileTraining@PitSisters.org.

PERSONAL CHEF DAMON BURCH III FORKS
Interview by Monica Stouder
Creative culinarian Executive Chef Damon Burch is an amazing asset to III Forks restaurant in Tapestry Park. We were able to pin down this busy pleaser of hungry patrons for some fun, forkable facts! How did you receive your training to become a chef?
DB: I started cooking in restaurants at 17 and went to culinary school at 21. Culinary school was very helpful, but most of what I know has come from the chefs I have worked under or next to. What sets your restaurant apart from others within your food style and the local area?
DB: We already have, hands down, some of the best meat I have ever tasted. We just rolled out some dry-aged Certified Angus Beef and dry-aged Wagyu Beef selections on our menu. Do you have a specialty dish that your family and friends always want you to make?
DB: Either my sausage gravy or bacon cider brussels sprouts. I always end up making one or both during the holidays. I run those Brussels on my menu from time to time. What food is your greatest indulgence?
DB: I am a sucker for foie gras. I have a small Tupperware of rendered foie fat in my freezer at home. Favorite kitchen tool:
DB: Probably my cheap Japanese Mandolin. What are your favorite ingredients to use?
DB: Without question, bacon and garlic. If you could have your own cooking show, what would you name it?
DB: “Get this camera out of my face.” I have no desire to have a TV show; real kitchens are much more exciting to me. Favorite celebrity chef:
DB: Jacques Pepin. He is very humble for his ability and makes difficult tasks seem easy.

(From an article in the Austin Chronicle)
Singer, composer and actor Lyle Lovett has broadened the definition of American music in a career that spans 14 albums. This Texas-based musician fuses elements of Americana, country, swing, jazz, folk, gospel and blues in a convention-defying manner that breaks down barriers. Turn it UP MODEST MOUSE By Jasmin Lankford
STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Modest Mouse is one of the most surprising commercial success stories of the new millennium. While their music is by turns taut and elliptical and their lyrics are sometimes cryptic and introspective, this indie rock band broke through the mainstream audience with the platinum-selling “Good News for People Who Love Bad News,” rising to the top of the album charts. Modest Mouse was formed in 1993 in Issaquah, Washington by singer and guitarist Isaac Brock, drummer Jeremiah Green and bassist Eric Judy. Before the mainstream breakthrough, their first albums generated a buzz in the underground music scene for dark, pessimistic lyrics centering on America’s suburban underbelly, and for music that jumps from angular punk to gently country-ish dirges. Soon Modest Mouse’s following grew and they signed with major label Epic Records in 2000. They released The Moon and Antarctica in 2000, the start of their mainstream success. In 2004, Good News for People Who Love Bad News became a commercial breakthrough with the hit singles “Float On” and “Ocean Breathes Salty.” The album sold over a million copies as the band began headlining arenas. In 2007, the album “We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Eight years after their last album, Modest Mouse has returned with their sixth album, “Strangers to Ourselves,” featuring the lead single “Lampshades on Fire.” Current members of Modest Mouse are Isaac Brock, Jim Fairchild, Jeremiah Green, Russell Higbee Lisa Molinaro, and Tom Peloso.

ROB THOMAS AND SPECIAL GUESTS PLAIN WHITE T’S By Jasmin Lankford
STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Rob Thomas is a gifted vocalist, spellbinding performer, and accomplished songwriter known worldwide as lead singer and primary composer with Matchbox Twenty as well as for his multi-platinum certified solo work and charttopping collaborations with other artists. Among his countless hits are solo classics like “This Is How A Heart Breaks” and Matchbox Twenty favorite “Smooth,” his 3x RIAA platinum-certified worldwide hit collaboration with Santana. Thomas earned three Grammy Awards for his role as co-writer and vocalist on “Smooth”, which topped Billboard’s Hot 100 for an astounding 12 consecutive weeks and hit No. 1 on Billboard’s Top Hot 100 Rock Songs and No. 2 on Billboard’s Hot 100 song of all time. His first solo album, “…Something To Be,” was the first album by a male artist from a rock or pop group to debut at No. 1 on The Billboard 200 since the chart was launched. Thomas’ second solo album generated two No. 1 singles in “Her Diamonds” and “Someday.” He made Billboard chart history as the only male artist with multiple No. 1 hits at Adult Top 40. Thomas is currently in the studio putting finishing touches on his long-awaited third solo album, the first in more than six years. Grammy-nominated Chicago alternative-pop outfit, Plain White T’s, took shape in the late ‘90s and skyrocketed to fame with their acoustic ballad “Hey There Delilah,” which achieved platinum status in 2007. Singles “1,2,3,4” and “Rhythm of Love” were also certified platinum in 2011. Since then, the band has released six studio albums, their latest “American Nights” in March, and continues to hone their unique mix of spunky energy and pop/rock craft.

STRIKE UP A CHORD INTERVIEWS IN THE MUSIC COMMUNITY
R5
July 7 • Thrasher Horne Center R5Rocks.com
BUZZ: How did the band start? R5: The band formed kind of randomly; sort of a spur of the moment
thing. Rocky wanted to learn how to play guitar and from there Ross and Riker starting learning their instruments as well. We asked Ratliff to come jam with us because we knew he could play drums, then convinced Rydel to join us with keyboards and the rest is history.
BUZZ: What’s your favorite song to play live? R5: I think collectively our favorite song to play live is “LOUD.” It’s the R5
anthem and the fans go crazy!
BUZZ: If you weren’t playing music, what would you be doing? R5: Ross would be a pilot. Rocky would be a producer. Riker would be in
the NHL. And Rydel and Ratliff would open a food truck or something.
BUZZ: What’s your dream gig – if you could play with any artist lineup? R5: Our dream gig would be to have our own music festival with amazing
artists like Walk The Moon, New Beat Fund, and The Heirs.
Murray Hill Theatre Celebrates 20 Years of Fellowship Tony Nasrallah is the president of Murray Hill Theatre, a Christian rock venue that showcases live music with a positive message. Established in 1995, Murray Hill Theatre will celebrate its 20th anniversary August 14-16. BUZZ: What is the mission of Murray Hill Theatre? TN: Murray Hill Theatre uses live music to present things of faith in a positive way, reaching out to those without an understanding of the gospel and encouraging those who do.
DON’T CALL ME SHIRLEY (DCMS)
BUZZ: Tell us a little bit about yourself. TN: I relocated to Jacksonville from Chicago in 1987. As a teenager at the time, I followed a path some young adults pursue of hanging out and doing the bar scene with your friends. After a very Christian upbringing, I lost touch with my faith and became disconnected as a young adult. BY HOLY BROWN
DCMSBand.com
BUZZ: I’m assuming the band name came from the movie “Airplane.” Were you all fans of the movie? DCMS: We couldn’t find a name and we struggled and struggled and
then one night Jerry’s wife watched the movie Airplane and she said, what about “Don’t Call Me Shirley”? And we were all like….. “ok”. We were skeptical at first but it stuck. So, when we did our t-shirts, we had printed on them, “Have you ever seen a grown man naked”…” I picked a bad week to stop drinking”. People started to recognize us by it.
BUZZ: How long have you been together? DCMS: Myself (David), Jerry and Cory have been together since 2009. Jeff
has been with us for 3 years. He’s really changed us; he’s very dynamic and brings a lot of personality.
BUZZ: How would you describe your band and the type of music that you play? DCMS: What people would call 90’s alternative. Some pop rock (your Gin Blossoms), a lot of your 90’s one hit wonders; we do some 80’s rock. As the night goes on, we’ll get into the harder, heavier stuff, more your modern hard rock [like] your Godsmack and Rage Against the Machine. It’s a plethora of different styles. 36

Many of my friends and family spoke with me about the value of faith and I soon remembered the importance of having faith in God. A timely discussion with a friend made me understand that I had to do something different in my life. Instead of hanging out at the bar scene on the weekends, I got involved in a local west side Coffee House that featured Christian bands. BUZZ: Why did you decide to start Murray Hill Theatre? TN: After a period of time in other parts of the U.S., I returned to Jacksonville and sought out that Coffee House. It had been leveled and no longer existed. I spent the next eight years telling myself that something needed to be established in Jacksonville so the benefit I experienced could be there for others. In August of 1995, my work began. Running Murray Hill was much more challenging than first expected but I persevered. Now that 20 years has passed, I credit our success to my faith in God and the guidance I received during the missteps. I want to grow my presence in the Jacksonville community and continue to provide a place where young people can gather and enjoy each other, the bands, and the important message they can deliver. Congratulations to B&C Financial Advisors for winning the Beaches Fine Arts Series 2015 Triathlon Mixed Relay Competition June 13!
Beaches Fine Arts Series (BFAS) hosts their annual Triathlon competitions to support the many free events held by BFAS throughout the year for community enjoyment and art awareness. Proceeds from the Triathlons support the BFAS concert series, receptions and exhibits, and educational outreach programs. Thanks to Triathlon participants like B&C Financial Advisors, BFAS has been able to use race proceeds to fund their free events since 1986. B&C Financial Advisors is a dedicated team of investment advisors and asset managers serving Jacksonville’s community for 20 years. B&C’s team stats are as follows: Lisa LaBelle came in at 23m 32s for running; Sean Guldi came in at 44m 20s in cycling; and Patrick Higgins (non-B&C staff) came in at 7m 3s for swimming. The team’s total time was 1h 16m 55s.
“
This was such an awesome experience for us - not only getting to connect with each other on a team, but all for a great cause,” said Guldi. “It means a lot to us to get out in the community and do some good.”
Training for a triathlon takes consistency and the drive to push your limits. This was Guldi’s third triathlon but first relay team. He has a background in cycling and running and has previously competed in the Gate River Run, charity bike rides, and corporate 5k runs. For LaBelle, this was her first triathlon and first relay team. She has participated in multiple races for causes as well as in the Armageddon Ambush mud run. She enjoys being outdoors, running, hiking, kayaking and participating in sports. The next sprint distance race is July 11. Competing in this race allows BFAS to bring top-quality artists from all over the world to North Florida and provide free educational outreach programs (including busing) to thousands of elementary, middle and high school students in our area. Race participants can register at BFASracing.org.

BUZZ: How have you teamed up with the Jacksonville Humane Society? CT: Earlier this year, we sponsored the Jacksonville Humane Society during their Mutt March event. Using historical data (2006-2014) from Animal Control and JHS, NLP Logix created a dashboard—creatively titled Doggy Dash—to visualize the impact the organizations were having on the animal community.
Why should I consider expunging or sealing my criminal record? Under Florida law, with limited exceptions, once the record is sealed or expunged, you simply do not need to acknowledge any arrests or plea covered by the sealed or expunged record. Who may qualify for sealing of a criminal record? The following conditions apply to those considering sealing of their criminal record: 1. No prior convictions (i.e. adjudications of guilty) . This means that if you have a Withhold of Adjudication, you may be able to seal your record. 2. A person should have never applied for a sealing or expungement, previously.
BUZZ: What is Doggy Dash? CT: Doggy Dash is an interactive tool that visualizes the canine intake records (highlighting owner
surrenders), collection location, adoptions and euthanizations. The records were separated by breed and further broken down to show the average weight, percentage of breed adopted by sex and most popular name for each sex within the different breeds. Trends were also clearly illustrated in Doggy Dash. The Jacksonville Humane Society was able to reduce surrenders and euthanizations even though the Jacksonville population continued to grow and funding for both organizations was decreased.
Who may qualify for an expungement of a criminal record? 1. Must have no prior convictions. 2. The charge in question must be dropped, dismissed, or Nolle prosequi. Our office can help you evaluate your case to see if you qualify. “Bring Home the Adams,” a video created by Emmy award-winning PRC Digital Media for the USS Adams Museum, sailed out of award season with three recognitions last month. The video, which highlights the plans for the future museum, was awarded the Silver Reel in Graphic/Animation at the Media Communications AssociationInternational Media Festival (MAI-I) as well as two Awards of Distinction from the Academy of Interactive & Visual Arts (AIVA).
“Making the USS Adams an iconic part of our downtown will boldly demonstrate that Jacksonville is proud of its military heritage.” - Ray Hays
“We created our visual effects to allow people to see what the dream will look like when it is realized,” said Ray Hays, president of PRC Digital Media. “The result is so seamless that many people have asked, ‘When did they bring in the ship?’”
“We are deeply grateful that someone of Ray Hays’ extraordinary talent chose to partner with us to help ‘Bring Home the Adams.’ We are not at all surprised that he won these awards for his video,” said Joe Snowberger, CEO of the USS Adams Museum. “We know it’s a winner because of the amount of support it’s brought us from people in the community who continue to donate to help bring Florida’s first naval warship museum to Jacksonville.” The video, produced and written by Hays, features notable Jacksonville residents, including U.S. Representative Ander Crenshaw, City of Jacksonville Mayor Alvin Brown and Duval County Sheriff John D. Rutherford. “Making the USS Adams an iconic part of our downtown will boldly demonstrate that Jacksonville is proud of its military heritage,” says Hays. “PRC has always done its part to promote a vibrant and growing downtown and the Adams Museum will provide a unique and valuable draw for decades to come.” The Jacksonville Historic Naval Ship Association ( JHNSA) is leading the effort to raise funds to complete the project that will bring this last surviving Cold War-era ship back to Jacksonville, where it was stationed for 21 of its 30 active years. The Adams Museum will be Florida’s first naval warship museum. 46

Stumbling Home By Wes Benwick
There is only one thing hotter than Jacksonville’s weather right now and that is the local real estate market. It just keeps getting better as the total number of homes on the market has leveled off while the listing and sale prices continue to climb. The median list price for area homes is up nearly 10 percent since last month, at $180,000 for the average home. The inventory of homes for sale has continued to drop and is at an 18 month low of 4.39 months, while over 93 percent of homes are selling at or above their listing price. Our focus this month is on the Atlantic Beach area, which is experiencing an increase in the number of homes for sale and list prices over the last several months. Condominium listings are at an 18-month low while prices are at an 18-month high of nearly $483,000. Compared to area homes, a condo in Atlantic Beach stays on the market less than half the amount of time. While all this good news should be leaving you with a great buzz right now, there are some changes starting August 1 that will affect the mortgage loan and home buying process. In next month’s issue, I’ll explain the government’s plans to have consumers consummating at the closing table.

MAGIC HAT #9 APRICOT STUFFED PORK TENDERLOIN
By Henriettibles.com
INGREDIENTS
1 Tbs. chopped fresh basil
3 lb. boneless pork loin roast
½ cup finely chopped almonds
3 Tbs. unsalted butter
½ tsp. instant espresso
½ cup finely chopped shallots
6 chopped nasturtium petals, plus some for garnish
1 cup finely chopped dried apricots (you can substitute 3 fresh apricots with bread) When I gaze at a bottle of Magic Hat #9 Not Quite Pale Ale, I’m transported to a different time. I think of flowers in my hair and music from the 60s and 70s—a vision as ethereal and mysterious as the name. Perfect for sipping at your summer BBQ, this craft is crisp and refreshing. You will immediately sense a hint of flowers and apricot tones. The apricot tones make this a wonderful brew to partner with pork, beef, chicken and just about anything else. As versatile as this pale ale is, it was challenging to create something that truly did it justice. But with surprise ingredients like black pepper, almonds, coffee, and nasturtiums, this stuffed pork tenderloin is definitely a success. Don’t fret if you can’t find nasturtiums; this dish is still amazing without them. Whether roasted or grilled, this tenderloin will be terrific!

4 slices toasted sourdough bread, ripped into very small pieces 1 tsp. fresh ground black pepper
Cooking twine 2 Tbs. grapeseed oil ¼ cup water 1 sweet onion, coarsely chopped Sliced fresh apricot for garnish
DIRECTIONS Melt butter in skillet on medium-low heat. Add shallots and apricots until both have softened. Remove from heat and add bread, pepper, basil, almonds, espresso, and nasturtium petals. Prep roast for stuffing by slicing horizontally about ½ inch from the bottom on the thinner end (make sure the fatty side is facing upward). You’ll be able to “unroll” the roast as you cut. DO NOT cut all the way through to the other side! When you’ve “unrolled,” if there is a thicker spot, butterfly that spot only, so the thickness is uniform. Dust both sides of the roast with salt and pepper. With the cut side up, spread stuffing on roast, leaving an inch around the edges. Roll up from the same end you cut first to unroll the roast. Making sure fat side is up, tie roast in 1-inch increments, starting at the ends first so you don’t push the stuffing out (tie 3 at each end, then tie the middle). Heat grapeseed oil in heavy skillet over medium-high heat. Brown roast on all sides. Place water and onion in bottom of roasting pan. Roast in oven at 375 degrees until internal meat hits 160, approximately 40-45 minutes. Allow roast to rest for 15 minutes, then slice. Garnish with sliced apricots and nasturtiums. Enjoy!
Brew Time

On a hot Florida summer day, there is perhaps nothing better than a cold, crisp, satisfying Belgian style Witbier. Commonly called Wit or White, the story of this now popular style has its ups and downs. Indeed, in the 1950s the 400-year-old style was all but extinct. Had it not been for Pierre Celis in Hoegaarden, Belgium, this refreshing summer beer style may have remained lost and only known in the pages of beer history books. The Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP), the most widely accepted authority on beer styles, describes Witbier as having a “pleasant sweetness (often with a honey and/or vanilla character) and a zesty, orange-citrusy fruitiness. Refreshingly crisp with a dry, often tart, finish.” It is further characterized as having a pale straw, yet cloudy appearance with a frothy, fluffy head. And, while other sources disagree, the BJCP’s guidelines call for up to 50 percent unmalted wheat to be used in brewing the beer. Once the dominant beer style in the areas east of Brussels in Belgium, wit was known as biere blanche in the southern, French-speaking portion of the country and wit in the northern, Flemish regions. Lovain, a city about 20 miles east of Brussels, was a powerhouse for the style in the 18th and 19th centuries. But, as the 19th century wore on, the lager revolution began to overtake the traditional regional beer style in popularity. Witbier began to fade along with many other distinctive beers styles that had once flourished across Belgium and Europe. In 1965, former milk man Pierre Celis began producing Hoegaarden Wit first from a wash tub in his father’s barn and later with equipment he purchased from an abandoned brewery in Heusden-Zolder. In 1966, he opened Brouwerij Celis and opened Brouwerij de Kluis in 1980 to expand production. In the late 1980s, bad luck stuck and the brewery burnt down. Since the building was not insured, Celis was forced to sell his brewery and its recipe to InterBrew, which is now known as A-B InBev. With the deeper pockets of InterBrew, the Hoegaarden brand grew and the witbier style once again became a popular style. Today there are a number of Belgian wit brews available including New Belgium’s Snapshot, Allagash White and Florida Cracker Belgian-style White Ale. GOLDEN TAP BEER OF THE MONTH Blanche De Chambly from Canada’s Unibroue is a superb example of a progressive Belgian-style witbier. With a healthy dose of coriander and fruity flavors, this beer is both refreshingly light and satisfyingly tasty. Paired with a summer fruit salad, this is the perfect beer for dinner on the back patio.

July CROSSWORD Horoscope

title sharks of pre the-game event
Aries (March 21- April 19) You are in need of some self-help books this month. There are no love prospects in your near future, and reading is something you can do while you are alone this month. You might as well read up on what others do to attract mates since you are not.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Your passion has been reinvigorated this month. It’s time to not blend in with the background, but stand out for once. Take out that crazy shirt or wild dress you bought but haven’t worn. Let’s go out to that place you make fun of others for going to because it’s different. Well, this month, so are you.
Gemini (May 21 – June 21) This month is more about fixing things than starting new ones. As much as you want to forget about the relationship that you just crashed and burned, believe it or not, bringing peaceful closure to it makes you come off as less of a jerk. Let’s do the right thing for once.

Venus is moving into Leo, heating up your second house of self-worth. Hmm. I would be shocked if you could find self-worth, let alone its second house. Sure you’re confident on the outside, but is that self-worth? Silly crab, no it’s not.
Leo (July 23 – August 22) With Mars visiting Gemini this month, your casual connections will be at an all-time high. We all want a meaningful relationship, but you have to play the hand you’re dealt. It’s time to frolic and play the “Sure, I’ll call ya *wink wink*” card this month. Enjoy.
Virgo (August 23 – September 22) Neptune is in retrograde and you are licking your love wounds. Everyone else is having fun, but you are emotionally scarred and not up to meeting new people. It’s a shame because it’s summer-loving time. Hope your wallowing doesn’t last all bikini season.
Libra (September 23 – October 22) Let’s face it, you’re a little more than just friends at this moment with your current crush. You need to force their hand, ratchet up the romance, and lock down this relationship. Let’s say you’re too forceful; fine, you can go back to being friends and quit living in love purgatory then.
Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) It appears Scorpio wants some long-term official plans: wedding, kids, etc. Well, be careful what you wish for. Just because you want these long-term items doesn’t always mean you are with the correct person. Know what else is long term? Regret and divorce.
Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) Typically you’re superficial, but shockingly not this time. Your current mate definitely dances to a drum beat that can’t be explained. But regardless of the quirks you don’t seem to mind. Or now that I mentioned it, and that everyone else thinks he/she is weird, do you care? I’m guessing you do now.
Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) Be honest for a second. Your current mate is dumb, or rude, or less than attractive, or boring, or something else that you have been putting up with for too long. So many other options out there; I don’t see what you’re holding on to. Don’t let stubbornness be the reason you’re still in a bad relationship.
Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) Cool, calm and casual? Not anymore. Passion, and perhaps some drama, ignites your sign this month, thanks to a procession of planets in your fifth house of romance and lust. Are you feeling up to it this month Aquarius? I hope so. Just make sure it’s the good drama, not that bad kind they show on MTV and Springer.
Pisces (February 19 – March 20) I say you don’t settle like you usually do. I get it - anyone talking to you is exciting, but show some spine. The philosophy of taking the first person who shows interest makes you so uninteresting. Have some confidence that another will come along and I bet you another one will come along. The second one might just be better than the first.
