COMMUNITY FOCUS

The Most Interesting Person I’ve Interviewed This Month

North Florida School of Special Education

He’s a tireless promoter of downtown, a champion for the arts and an all-around great guy.

NorthFloridaSchool.org North Florida School of Special Education’s mission is to improve the lives of students with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities through the achievement of academic, vocational, and social skills. Founded in 1992, NFSSE students range in age from 6 to 22 years and possess a variety of intellectual disabilities including Autism Spectrum Disorder, Down Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome and Traumatic Brain Injury. Our programs are designed to allow each student a unique learning opportunity.

Tony Allegretti never fails to bring his enthusiasm for Jacksonville to Studio 5 when he’s a guest on First Coast Connect.

First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross

“This is a great time for arts in our city right now, and I’m so excited to be part of it,” said Allegretti, who is also known for helping to launch Jacksonville’s First Wednesday Downtown Art Walk and the Riverside Arts Market.

Programs include academics, vocational training, job coaching, art, music, physical education, computer lab, and culinary arts. After school activities include a running team, art club, two social clubs, yoga, swimming, dance and Capernaum. The school’s farm, Berry Good Farms, offers students and post-graduates a horticulture program using a variety of on trend urban farming methods. NFSSE offers students a safe and nurturing learning environment, which encourages growth and independence.

Hubbard House HubbardHouse.org Founded in 1976, Hubbard House is a certified, comprehensive domestic violence center providing programs and services to more than 5,000 women, children and men annually in Duval and Baker counties. While Hubbard House is most known for its emergency shelter, the agency also provides extensive adult and youth outreach services, school-based education, therapeutic child care, batterers’ intervention programs, court advocacy and volunteer and community education opportunities.

L’Arche Harbor House LArcheJacksonville.org L’Arche Harbor House has been part of the Jacksonville community for more than 29 years. L’Arche International is celebrating 50 years of building a more human and inclusive world for adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. It is a faith-based organization in which people with and without intellectual disabilities create a community together. L’Arche Harbor House is home to 20 adults with intellectual and physical disabilities. The community consists of 5 family style homes. Caring live-in assistants share life with the core members. All core members attend a day program. Many go to the L’Arche Rainbow Workshop, ARC, Pine Castle or work at local businesses. L’Arche Harbor House is building a new workshop and looks forward to its opening in the fall of 2014. Our new capital campaign “A NEW DAWN” officially launched in May 2014 to raise funds and equip the workshop, build and furnish a new home and start an endowment.

That’s why I was excited to host him once again when we recently discussed his new role as executive director of the Cultural Council of Greater Jacksonville.

He most recently worked as the JAX Chamber’s director of downtown engagement. While at the Chamber, he was instrumental in the creation of Community First Saturdays. Tony is also currently a director of the Downtown Investment Authority. And of course, most downtown foodies know he’s a partner in the group that owns the Burrito Gallery and the Uptown Market in Springfield. “I love Jacksonville, and the arts and culture of this city are part of what makes it great,” Allegretti said. “The future is exciting!” To hear the most compelling newsmakers in town, be sure to tune into First Coast Connect, every weekday morning at 9 a.m. on 89.9 WJCT! Keeping Promises

FEATURED EVENTS

Evelyn Peters-Washington keeps her promises because, to her, character matters. She comes from strong stock. Christian values and a belief in the importance of education are significant guideposts that move her forward and influence her choices. In 2010, the City of Jacksonville asked Mrs. PetersWashington to produce a tribute to her late husband, Teddy Washington, a supremely talented trumpet player and beloved Jacksonville native, for the Jacksonville Jazz Festival. It was at this event, that Mrs. Peters-Washington made her vow to return to Jacksonville and carry the torch for her cherished mate and keep Jazz alive in Jacksonville. And now, she has reorganized her life and returned to Jacksonville full of commitment and energy, ready to use her talents and resources to give back to the citizens of our town. Mrs. Peters-Washington envisions Jacksonville as a mecca for culture and entertainment, full of abundant opportunities and dripping with talent. A strong advocate for downtown, she centers her efforts on making Jacksonville a destination spot for upscale worldclass cultural and entertaining events. Choosing to live downtown is another way she expresses her belief in the vitality of the area. Jax2025, a community effort to create and realize a vision for our town, has also claimed countless of her volunteer hours. She also feels especially motivated to reach youth and enrich their lives though the arts and music which are such strong motivators for learning. She plans to utilize her non-profit organization, Families Across America, to provide programs to enhance lives through music and the arts while also providing a moral compass. Her experience as a producer in the music industry has taught her that public recognition and success means very little without an inner rudder to guide and define character. Mrs. Peters-Washington has her finger on the pulse of Jacksonville, and feels that we are on the cusp of exponential growth and cultural development. A woman who is true to her word, she has returned to help Jacksonville realize its full potential, and we, the people of Jacksonville, will be the lucky recipients as she shares her very special legacy with us. Do you know a local artist, event, or organization that deserves attention? Suggestions can be submitted to PromotingTheArts@gmail.com

Theatre In The Know By Todd Rykaczewski

JOE SCHWARZ: Executive Director of Players By The Sea Players by the Sea Community Theatre has been a staple landmark in Jacksonville for forty-six years. The Community Theatre aims to educate and encourage creativity. Classes are available for all ages and experience isn’t required. Volunteering is a great way to learn more about theatre production and gain acting experience. Joe Schwarz the Executive Director has worked at Players by the Sea for the past eight years. He works with talented staff to bring education and enjoyment to the public. During the 2014-2015 season ten productions are scheduled to appear on their stage.

Players

Players by the Sea presents the local premiere of the sensational Broadway hit “Venus in Fur” June 6 – 21 on the Studio Stage. The Tony Award nominated comedy by David Ives is a wildly exciting erotic and intellectual power struggle between a know-it-all New York director and an actress who may not be quite as dumb as she looks. The director, Thomas, has adapted Leopold von Sacher-Masoch’s 1870 novel “Venus in Fur” for the stage. (Okay, his play is about masochism, but in a loving way.) After an uninspiring day of auditions, he is set to go home to his bossy fiancé, when the door opens and in bursts Vanda, very late, very profane and very clueless. Nothing could be further from the refined goddess-like character he is seeking, but she desperately persuades Thomas to let her read and astonishes him with her stunning command of the part. She even pulls authentic costumes out of her tote bag. As the two work through the script, the line between play and reality blurs. The balance of power tilts, as the actress gradually exerts complete intellectual and sexual dominance over the director, exactly as in the novel. “Venus in Fur” is directed by Daniel Austin, whose brilliant performance as Prior Walter was the emotional center of the recent “Angels in America.” The two-person cast features Carl Vorwerk as Thomas and Amanda Morales as Vanda. Performances are June 6, 7, 12, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21 at 8 p.m. There is a Sunday matinee June 15 at 2 p.m. The play runs a fast-paced 90 minutes, with no intermission. For information and tickets, call (904)249-0289 or log onto PlayersByTheSea.org. Tickets are $23; students, seniors and military $20. June 2014 • www.iwantaBUZZ.com

“TICK, TICK…BOOM!” June 13- June 22 ABET Theatre ABETTheatre.com

“Tick, Tick…Boom!” is a musical soon set to hit the ABET Stage. Jon, an aspiring composer who lives in New York City in 1990, is worried he has made the wrong career choice to be part of the performing arts. A charming, autobiographical story of Larson, who won a Pulitzer and three Tony Awards for his musical Rent.

“VENUS IN FUR“

“OLIVER!”

June 6-June 21

June 6-July 6

Thomas, a beleaguered playwright/ director, is desperate to find an actress to play Vanda, the female lead in his adaptation of the classic sadomasochistic tale “Venus in Furs.” Into his empty audition room walks a vulgar and equally desperate actress—oddly enough, named Vanda. Though utterly wrong for the sophisticated part, Vanda exhibits a strange command of the material, piquing Thomas interest with her seductive talents and secretive manner. As the two work through the script, they blur the line between play and reality, entering into an increasingly serious game of submission and domination that only one of them can win. A mysterious, funny, erotic drama that represents yet another departure for the multifaceted David Ives.

The well-loved musical adaptation of Charles Dickens’s classic tale! “Oliver” is an orphan who runs away from his cruel caretakers only to land himself in trouble with the wrong kind of people. As he navigates his new life, he finds hope in the kindness of newfound friends.

“Les Miserables” at Theatre Jacksonville

Theater in the River City By Tamara McClaran, Northeast Florida Theater Enthusiast The international smash hit musical “Les Miserables” may be the most popular in the world, and it makes its local premiere at Theatre Jacksonville in June. Michael Lipp, renowned for managing big theatrical productions, is directing. “’Les Miserables’ is arguably one of the most beloved and successful musicals ever,” Lipp said. “How could I turn down the opportunity to direct a production of this scope and importance, particularly the premiere performance of the musical in the area?” Approximately 180 people auditioned for a role in the 40-plus member cast. The auditions attracted many well known established actors as well as any new faces from area colleges. “I don’t believe any show in the Jacksonville area has drawn a field of talent of that size,” Lipp said. While acting and movement skills are vital, Lipp focused first on vocal ability during the audition process. “Our leads have voices you will not believe,” Lipp said. “I don’t think even the most ardent ‘Les Miserables’ fans will be disappointed.” The creative team for the Theatre Jacksonville production includes music director Kim Beasley, choreographer Curtis Williams and stage manager Ashley Weldon. Lipp’s vision for “Les Miserables” is intimacy and simplicity. “Despite its epic scope and the operatic score, there is a very human and personal story about injustice and redemption,” Lipp said. “I want audiences to see a ‘different’ ‘Les Miserables’ than they’ve seen before… and connect with it in new ways.” “Les Miserables” runs June 6-22 at Theatre Jacksonville. ABOUT KENDALL-JACKSON Their story is as much about a winery as it is the story of one man, his family and a dream. In 1974, our founder Jess Jackson, famously bought an 80-acre pear and walnut orchard in rural Lakeport, California, where he planned to try his hand at creating wine from some of his favorite varietals while on weekends away from his successful career as a San Francisco attorney. “I was attracted by the lifestyle,” Jess said. “I wanted to get away from law and become a farmer.” By the early 1980s, Jess and his growing family had transformed the orchard into a working winery that produced grapes Jess sold to other wineries. During a fateful harvest in 1980, a large order from another winery was cancelled, and Jess was stuck with a bumper crop of unused grapes: from this the first bottle of Kendall-Jackson was produced. This first bottling, the 1982 Vintner’s Reserve, garnered attention for its unique bright fruitiness. It was an immediate, if modest, hit. Though Jess and his family shipped less than 20,000 cases of that legendary ‘82 Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay, the release went on to become the most popular Chardonnay in America. In 1983, Vintner’s Reserve Chardonnay won the first Double Platinum Award ever presented by the American Wine Competition, and has gone on to win accolades year after year.

“When my family and I founded Kendall-Jackson in 1982, we simply wanted to create extraordinary wine from California’s best vineyards.” -JESS JACKSON, Founder

Now, almost three decades later, Kendall-Jackson Winery produces an array of super-premium wines whose quality, taste and integrity embody the very spirit of our founder’s mission. In Jess Jackson’s own words, “We grow grapes on our own 15,000 acres of California coastal vineyards. We take the no-compromise, high-road approach to quality required to grow our world-class grapes and produce acclaimed award-winning wines.” Among the wines made in the Jackson Family collection are Kendall-Jackson Wine Estates, Cambria, Stonestreet, Edmeades, La Crema, Cardinale, Lokoya, Hartford Family Winery, Vérité, Carmel Road, Murphy-Goode, La Jota, Freemark Abbey, Byron Estates, Arrowood in the United States; Chateau Lassegue in France; Tenuta di Arceno in Italy; Yangarra in Australia; and Calina in Chile. Jackson Family Wines is one of California’s few remaining family-owned winery groups, with family members working full-time in a variety of positions.

BUZZ: WHAT ROLE DO YOU THINK THIS MUSIC VENUE WILL PLAY IN THE JACKSONVILLE? IS: We want to compliment the other great live venues in N.

Florida; such as The Florida Theatre, St. Augustine Amphitheater, Ponte Vedra Concert Hall and Freebird. We also want to be one of the signature venues in the Southeast. We intend to partner with the Florida Theatre to bring in well known entertainment as well as showcase local talent. We believe it will have a very unique “vibe” that will be highly attractive to artists and fans. With these other great venues there will every type of venue for all the different types of performing acts.

An Interview with

MANDIE MCKENZIE from Friday Musicale BUZZ: What’s special about Friday Musicale that’s different than other music venues?

BUZZ: DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE MUSICIAN? IS: This may sound like a cop out but I like too many styles to

MM: Where should I begin? Friday Musicale started

in Jacksonville in 1890, that’s eleven years before The Great Fire (of 1901)! There’s great history here, thousands who have grown up playing recitals at Friday Musicale, as adults have had their weddings and special events at Friday Musicale and attend the numerous concerts presented each season.

BUZZ: Do you have a favorite musician? MM: I can’t necessarily say that I have a favorite

musician. From an early age, I have enjoyed various genres of music including jazz, country, Christian, classical, pop, soul, gospel and Latin. I truly am amazed by the students that perform at Friday Musicale in recitals and during our competitions, the talent they possess at such young ages is incredible and so encouraging for our future generations!

BUZZ: What are your goals for Friday Musicale? MM: We have an ongoing goal of increasing publicity about Friday Musicale. Although we are the oldest musical organization in the State of Florida, often we hear the phrase, “I’ve never heard of Friday Musicale before!” As our President Pam Franklin says, “We promise, we aren’t trying to keep it a secret!” The 2014-2015 concert season will be Friday Musicale’s 125th season.

BUZZ: What show/shows are you currently working on? MM: Right now we are confirming our 2014-2015

concert season artists, our 125th season, which will kick off Friday, October 3, 2014 at 7:30 p.m. with violinist Sean Lee who “is quickly gaining recognition as one of today’s most talented rising artists” and pianist Peter Dugan who prizes “versatility as the key to the future of classical music” and is “equally at home in classical, pop, and jazz idioms.”

IS:Our vision for the renovation of Snyder Memorial is for it to be a live performance venue (music, drama, dance), recording studio and technology training center for digital music. It would be unique in the region in that all of this would be happening in a beautiful, turn of the century church. Also, we love the re-purposing of a historic building downtown, the great natural acoustics of the main hall and the stunning original windows and architecture.

BUZZ: WHAT MADE YOU FIRST WANT TO PURSUE THIS

VENTURE (SNYDER)?

IS: About two years ago we were looking for a new recording space downtown. I remember seeing a band in Snyder during Jazz Fest and thought it could be a great space. Once we were able to get on the building we started to see the huge potential in what the space could be in terms a live venue, recording space and more!

EVERYBODY’S TALKING ABOUT Festival-goers should plan to arrive early for the official Florida Country Superfest Fan Fest & Tailgate Party located directly outside EverBank Field, featuring a country music stage, artist meet and greets, festive food, and much more. Offering a tailgating environment akin to the atmosphere surrounding the annual Florida Georgia gridiron battle, the Country Superfest—with its spirit of celebration— promises to send everybody home a winner.

have a favorite. Some of my favorites are Duke Ellington, Bob Dylan, Stevie Wonder, U2, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, The Clash, Ryan Adams, Queen, Jack Johnson, Bob Marley, David Crowder.... It goes on and on.

BUZZ: WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR AMPLIFY? IS: Our short term goals are:

1. To raise the capital necessary to renovate Snyder ($3-5 million). 2. To have a working agreement with the city as to how our vision can compliment theirs for a revived downtown by Fall.

3. To begin the renovation project by the end of the year and open our doors by mid 2015. Then our goals are related to seeing Snyder Memorial being used for a live performance venue, recording studio, technology training center, as well a desirable destination for public events, weddings and partner with larger events in the city core.

Hallmarks associated with all true forces of nature, these mighty attributes were exactly what Little Big Town had in their corner as they blew into the studio in late February for the whirlwind recording session that produced their strongest work yet, their aptly titled fifth album, “Tornado.”

It’s been more than two decades since a new country act has captured the public’s imagination the way Florida Georgia Line has. The duo’s multi-week #1 single, “Cruise,” hit the Top 10 just 14 weeks after its release, faster than any debut since Brooks & Dunn’s “Brand New Man.” It’s the kind of affirmation few young artists ever experience, and yet was just the cap on a year that saw Brian Kelley and Tyler Hubbard thrill audiences on tour dates with Alabama, Brantley Gilbert and Jake Owen; cut an EP and their first album “Here’s To The Good Times.”

Jason Aldean: June 14 With more than 8.5 million records sold and 12 No. one hits under his belt, entertainer Jason Aldean recently released one of 2012’s most buzzed about new albums, “NIGHT TRAIN.” Entertainment Weekly calls Aldean’s delivery on the album “epic,” and Billboard points to the singer pushing the limits to move his “sound forward sonically, vocally and lyrically.”

Miranda Lambert: June 15 In her hit single “Baggage Claim,” Miranda Lambert sings about the kind of luggage you wish would get lost. “I have been dragging around your sensitive ego,” she tells an ex-friend or lover — soon concluding, with characteristic swagger, that she’ll “drop your troubles off at the conveyor belt/I hand you a ticket to, go get it yourself.” Mr. Needy is left doing loops on the suitcase carousel while Lambert’s rocking out in the unloading zone. Putting the Brakes on the Summer Slide By Robin R. Warren, WJCT Education Outreach Coordinator

Summer is here! But along with warmer weather, trips to the pool and the Fourth of July, comes a not-so-fun reality... the summer slide. The term summer slide describes what happens when young minds sit idle for three months. One study revealed that kids lose about 2.6 months of their math skills and approximately 2 months of reading skills during summer break. So what’s a parent to do? I’m so glad you asked! As always, WJCT has you and your children covered. We have some tips to help your little ones of all ages put the brakes on the Summer Slide! • Watch WJCT-TV! This summer, you can rely on PBS KIDS and WJCT to provide a positive learning

experience that is also fun. We’re adjusting our regular schedule to provide more of the PBS KIDS programs your kids love - more “Wild Kratts,” more “Curious George,” more “Dinosaur Train” - AND more of the key learning they need to stay ahead of the summer slump. It’s double the learning and double the fun! • Have your kids teach you about what they learned at school. Focus on a major subject, such as math or science. If your third grader had to memorize the multiplication table, have them quiz you on it during the summer between third and fourth grade. It will also be fun for the kids to see how smart you are! • Read, read, read! Read with your child every day, many times a day. Read books, signs, posters— anything with words. Read in the morning, in the afternoon, and at night. Read at the park, in the living room, at the pool. Read print everywhere you can find it! • Stimulate their minds. You can also keep kids stimulated by taking them on outings, such as a children’s museum, the zoo, an art museum, the theater, or a professional baseball game.

Until next time!

The French in Florida Gallery Now Open at MOSH Exhibit and Related Programs Celebrate Fort Caroline’s 450th Anniversary In 2012, Jacksonville commemorated the 450th anniversary of French Huguenot Captain Jean Ribault’s arrival and the beginning of French history in Florida. 2014 marks the 450th anniversary of the founding of Fort Caroline. French Huguenot Captain René Goulaine Laudonniére arrived at Fort Caroline in 1564, along with ships loaded with hopeful settlers, livestock, tools, seeds and munitions. The French built a settlement and began trading with the native Timucuans. THE EXHIBIT “French in Florida” is a celebration of the 450th anniversary of Fort Caroline. The exhibit is comprised of 42 digital reproductions of historic Jacques Le Moyne and Theodore de Bry engravings of

16th century Florida. The reproductions chronicle the French’s experiences with the Timucuans as they established Fort Caroline. These digital images are made possible by a donation to the State Archives of Florida from the personal collection of Michael W. and Dr. Linda Fisher of Jacksonville, Florida. “French in Florida” is on display adjacent to “Uncovering the Past: New Archeological Discoveries of Northeast Florida.” The exhibit, showcased in The Loft Gallery on the third floor, takes a comprehensive look at Native American life both before and after European contact in what archaeologists call the St. Mary’s Region. “French in Florida” will be on display through July 6. PROGRAMMING MOSH – and a host of other cultural partners – and are presenting programs to celebrate Fort Caroline’s 450th anniversary. On June 21, MOSH will present the Jacksonville premier of the “French in Florida” film. The digitally animated short film is based on the historic Jacques Le Moyne and Theodore de Bry engravings of early Florida. A string quartet from the University of Florida will play the original film score live during the showing and historical archaeologist Dr. John de Bry, descendent of Theodore de Bry, will provide context for these iconic engravings.

tucked away off Atlantic Boulevard in what used to be the old Hala restaurant. The space is a bit offset from the road and a bit difficult to see when simply driving by. But really this one is not to be missed.

The Gulf Shrimp & Grits entrée was very good. The grits themselves were cooked perfectly and even on their own would have been a phenomenal meal. But the House Smoked Bacon Lardons cream sauce and shrimp blanketing my dish was definitely a unique additive to an already tasty base. Very creative indeed.

With plenty of parking I found myself already inspired when walking to Dirty Reds’, but what made the short jaunt truly drool-worthy was the fact that there was a mammoth BBQ out front infusing chicken, chicken wings, brisket and ribs with a cloud of smoky goodness. I guess it would have looked strange a lone woman standing in the parking area breathing in a savory food fog, so I begrudgingly moved past the marvelous meat and into Dirty Reds’ front door.

Friendly service, well varied menu, homemade eats, amazing ownership, casual atmosphere, good price points, New Orleans Chef... it is all good here.

Immediately I was greeted with a warm welcome from one of the owners Joe Haygood. Very nice indeed! The atmosphere encompasses a completely casual feel with wooden tables, blues music plays in the background, cement floors, metal pails embedded into the tables for bare rib bones and Low Country boil toss-aways, - all centered around a good size bar. The place seats around 87 inside and around 15 outside on a little patio and overall would be great for a good sized gathering.

But the Fried Brownies captivated my heart (and my hips). Deep fried in a waffle batter and dusted with powdered sugar these brownies also came with homemade dipping sauces. Absolutely amazing!

After purchasing our dishes we found a booth and waited for approximate 5 minutes before our meals were brought to the table. Incredibly fast! I was told that the brick oven stays between 520 – 560 degrees so pizzas and bread bowls can be cooked in 4 to 5 minutes approximately. The salad bowl that my foodie friend ordered was equally as tasty – and the side of marinara to dip the bread bowl in was a great concept as well! The McCartney live experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity; in just three hours some of the greatest moments from the last 50 years of music are relived; music which for many has shaped the very soundtrack of their lives. The last decade has seen Paul and his band perform in a staggeringly impressive range of venues and locations, including outside the Coliseum in Rome, in Moscow’s Red Square, Buckingham Palace, at the White House, a free show in Mexico to over 400,000 people, and even broadcast live into Space! Featuring Paul’s band of the last 10+ years–Paul “Wix” Wickens (keyboards), Brian Ray (bass/guitar), Rusty Anderson (guitar) and Abe Laboriel Jr (drums)– the show never disappoints.

Formed in 2007 when Alex Dorris and Taylor Freydberg met at a local bluegrass jam, the Wholetones were later completed with the addition Russ Depa, on upright bass, and Mayo Coates on drums. They play a unique mix of bluegrass, folk, jazz, and metal, all translated through acoustic instruments. Combining impressive technical skill with the spontaneity of jazz and drive of bluegrass, they put on a captivating live show, jumping from folk to metal as easily as they do from banjo to cello. The Wholetones’ blend of genres is a result of the four members’ enormously varied musical appetite. They play and listen to reggae, metal, hip-hop, bluegrass, and everything in between, and the end product is a truly original sound.

“This success in drawing a musical legend like Paul McCartney to Jacksonville showcases SMG’s hard work as it continues to bring top acts here – keeping our city in the spotlight,” said Mayor Alvin Brown. “Paul McCartney is a global superstar who performs in world-class cities. Fans will come here from across Florida and Georgia for this concert. We hope they’ll make a full weekend of it, staying at our hotels, eating in our restaurants, shopping at our stores, having a good time and returning home to tell their friends that Jacksonville is a place where great things are happening.”

ANDY GRAMMER STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: In the three years since Andy Grammer released his self-titled debut album, the Los Angeles native singer-songwriter known for his vibrant pop/rock/ soul mix has taken an incredible journey. Emerging as one of the biggest success stories in 2012, Andy has performed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” (three times) while sharing the stage with Taylor Swift, Train, and Colbie Caillat. He was named the first male pop star, since John Mayer in 2002, to reach the Top 10 at Adult Pop Radio on his first 2 singles, “Keep Your Head Up” and “Fine By Me”, both certified Platinum and Gold respectively with more than 1,500,000 singles sold together. Every song that Grammer wrote on the album had one goal in mind: “I’m just trying to track down the truth,” says Grammer, who was born in Los Angeles and grew up in New York. “My favorite thing is to pop up above everybody and write from a bird’s-eye view. It may be about a break-up, it may be about a good relationship, it may be what we’re doing on this planet here. I like to be far enough away to see the whole scope of what’s occurring.” While much of his music is upbeat, Grammer is

quick to add that he’s hardly “pink and fluffy.” I’m not intentionally trying to be positive, I’m just trying to be real.”

Performing live remains a communal experience for Grammer, who’s toured with Gavin DeGraw, Mat Kearney, the Plain White T’s, Parachute, and Natasha Bedingfield - among others. “As an artist, you have an opportunity to get in and move things around in people. It’s one of the only times during the day where they say, ‘I’m going to open up to some other stuff here,’ and you have that hour to get in and move stuff around and put it all back together. Those are the best gigs, where you can see that the whole room has moved somewhere together.”

AMERICAN AQUARIUM STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: In the business of music, many are called and many may try, but few cross the threshold of being able to say they are truly committed for the long haul. With the release of their latest studio album, “Burn.Flicker.Die.,” American Aquarium is proving that they have graduated to that class of professional musicians that have made an undeniable commitment to their music and their fans.

Like many of the musical heroes that have paved the way before them, American Aquarium can wrap the ugliest feelings in the most spirited soundscape. Sonically uplifting instrumentation and

vivid, wrenching lyrics illuminate the dark side of hanging out in rock ‘n’ roll limbo, but also how the band has clawed their way out of it. Through

their struggle to sustain their career and resist the temptation of fire, American Aquarium’s demons have hung around.

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Paleface is an American musician and artist currently on tour as a high-energy folk rock band featuring his girlfriend drummer Monica “Mo” Samalot (drums, back-up vocals), in support of his Ramseur Records follow up “One Big Party.” Paleface celebrated the album release with a special guest-performance alongside The Avett Brothers at NYC’s Radio City Music Hall, followed by US and Europe tours. Soon after the album’s release, Daytrotter. com featured a brand new live stripped down recording session by Paleface, and one of the tracks was voted “Daytrotter’s Best of the Year - Reader’s Choice”. Later, PASTE Magazine premiered “PALEFACE - The Making of ‘One Big Party,’” a short documentary which follows Paleface during the process of recording, touring and performing. Paleface’s latest video for the ablum’s tittle-track released this winter and received TV exposure via MTV’s college station MTVU as well as via satellite and online outlets. And just this Spring Paleface performed at Mountain Stage and the session has been airing worldwide via National Public Radio (NPR) and the Voice of America’s satellite radio service. Paleface was schooled musically by friend Daniel Johnston and soon discovered by the legendary Danny Fields (The Stooges, The Ramones, MC5) at an NYC open mic. He has since released over a dozen

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: With a sound like no other, The Ryan West Band has been playing numerous venues for the past six years stretching from Florida, to Alabama, throughout Georgia to South Carolina. There is no mistaking

the drive and vocal range that front man Ryan West uses to entertain his audience. Able to hang with rock star highs like Steve Perry and

GAME FACE

BRENT MARTINEAU

Sports Director at

Local Athletes of Jacksonville Blake Bortles

Jaguars<Quarterback

The Jacksonville Jaguars first round pick in the 2014 NFL Draft was quarterback Blake Bortles. He played his college football at UCF and is from the Orlando area. Bortles was a bit of a surprise pick by the Jags considering the plan will be to sit him down at the outset of the season while Chad Henne starts. Bortles (6’5”, 230 lbs.) is a prototypical quarterback when it comes to size. Bortles was only the 6th quarterback drafted in Jags franchise history.

Marqise Lee

Jaguars<Wide Reciever

The Jaguars got their rookie quarterback a future weapon when they drafted Marqise Lee in the second round. Lee played at USC and was considered a first round pick, but he fell to the Jags with the 39th overall selection because of a knee injury. Two years ago, Lee was projected as a Heisman Trophy candidate, but an early season knee injury in 2013 made for a tough year statistically. Many experts believe Lee was one of the steals of the draft for the Jags.

Telvin Smith

Jaguars<Linebacker

On day three of the NFL Draft, the Jaguars turned their attention to the defensive side of the football. Smith is a linebacker from the national champion Florida State Seminoles. He is fast and hard hitting despite being a bit undersized for the position. The Jags think Smith has the body to fill out his frame and add 10-15 pounds. Smith is another good value pick for the Jags considering his stock dropped after failing a drug test.

Allen Robinson

Jaguars<Wide Reciever

The Jaguars added more competition at wide receiver in the May draft when they traded up to get Allen Robinson from Penn State. Robinson is a different kind of receiver than the Jags have on their roster. He weighs 220 pounds and is known for his ability to go up catch balls with his vertical jumping ability. The Jags were trying to decide between picking Lee and Robinson, but they were able to get both.

THE PLAY BY PLAY

WITH COLE PEPPER

DARIO SALA

General Manager of Jacksonville Armada Even before they play a single soccer game, the Jacksonville Armada is building the soccer community in Jacksonville. This summer, coaches from one of the world’s most renowned teams, Real Madrid, will be in Jacksonville conducting clinics for boys and girls ages 8-14, June 23- August 15. Cole Pepper visited with Armada general manager Dario Sala about the camps:

CP: How did this partnership with Real Madrid come about? DS: Real Madrid Foundation was looking to expand their soccer camps and clinics in north Florida and the city of Jacksonville. They approached us to see if there was interest from the Armada to partner up with them. We had a few meetings and agreed to start the program in Jacksonville this summer. CP: What will the kids who attend these camps learn? DS: The kids attending the camps would learn the fundamentals of the Real Madrid philosophy and school of soccer. We believe the clinics will help the kids to become a better player once they start to understand the differences between systems and styles of playing the beautiful game. CP: What will this do for local soccer in Northeast Florida?

DS: It will definitely help north Florida youth soccer system. Local youth coaches will have a chance to participate as assistant coaches in some of the skills sessions and take that experience to their own clubs. CP: Is this a one-time deal, or will there be more of these camps? DS: We are planning to run eight weeks of camps this summer. If these are successful in terms of attendance and response from Jacksonville’s youth soccer community, then we will host more of them. CP: Will we see more international partnerships with the Armada? DS: Yes, we are planning more international partnerships and we would like to announce them after the summer. All I can say is, the caliber of the teams we are in conversations about partnership are top level and top brands around the world. It’s going to be great to put Jacksonville on the world stage and it will be great for soccer fans in northeast Florida. June 2014 • www.iwantaBUZZ.com

THROWING INJURIES IN THE YOUNG ATHLETE Kevin Murphy, MD

Heekin Orthopedic Specialists JaxSportsDoc.com

SPRING LESSONS FROM COLLEGE FOOTBALL IN THE SOUTH FLORIDA: There is optimism in Gainesville that the offense under new coordinator Kurt Roper will be much improved. It all starts with quarterback Jeff Driskel, who has lost nearly ten pounds. Most importantly, Roper has worked hard with Driskel on his sloppy mechanics that caused him to make horrendous picks similar to the ones he threw against Miami and Tennessee. The defense with the likes of Dante Fowler, Jr. and a more mature Antonio Morrison should be solid. GEORGIA: Most of the early attention will be on quarterback Hutson Mason, but the defense under Jeremy Pruitt is what needs the most improvement. Pruitt has simplified the defense for the nine returning starters. Defensive backs Tray Matthews and J. J. Green, who was moved from running back, must replace the production of Josh Harvey-Clemons, who was dismissed from the team during the off-season. ALABAMA: Former Florida State quarterback Jacob Coker has enrolled and is ready for summer workouts. Coker has a chance to win the job after an unimpressive showing by senior Blake Sims and the younger Tide quarterbacks in the spring game. Jacksonville area products Derrick Henry and receiver Chris Black are ready to explode on the scene. If Coker wins the job he will likely be facing former FSU quarterback Clint Trickett in the Chick- fil- A classic to open the season. AUBURN: The loss of Tre Mason will not slow down the Tiger offense. There are three solid running backs-Cameron Artis Payne, Corey Grant and Peyton Barber-returning in the backfield. Quarterback Nick Marshall improved his passing game during the spring. Auburn’s main concern is replenishing the defense after losing nearly half a dozen starters. The front line could be one of the best in the league with Montravius Adams and Carl Lawson. FLORIDA STATE: Quarterback Jameis Winston simply has to stay out of trouble the rest of the summer. Winston’s ridiculous crab legs fiasco is an example of what he can’t afford to do if he wants to be the leader of this football team. Spring practice proved that the offensive line with four returning starters will be solid. Yet, the receivers are unproven compared to previous years. Holes have to be filled on the defensive line. There is great promise in the secondary due to players such as Ronald Darby and Jalen Ramsey.

Kevin Murphy, MD, of Heekin Orthopedic Specialists, is a board certified, fellowship trained orthopedic surgeon specializing in minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery of the knee, ankle, hip, elbow and shoulder. Dr. Murphy is a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the Olympic Sports Medicine Society. He is a lecturer and instructor in the field of arthroscopy, and is a nationally recognized expert in hip, knee, & shoulder pathologies. Jim Mackie: In your practice what are some of the injuries you see in the young throwing athlete and how could they be possibly avoided? Dr. Kevin Murphy: We see a number of labral tears, which are probably the most common injury in young, throwing athletes. Rotator cuff strain is also a fairly common injury seen in this age group.

Many of the injuries they experience are related to abnormal mechanics and poor throwing motion of the shoulder. The vast majority are from overuse; throwing too many pitches without proper rest. Prevention can be addressed through proper throwing mechanics and rotator cuff strengthening exercises. The rotator cuff functions to hold the humeral head in the socket tightly and can minimize many of these overuse injuries.

Jim Mackie: What is the advice you would give to a young athlete in regards to preventing arm injuries through increasing strength, flexibility, pitch counts, proper mechanics, etc.?

Dr. Kevin Murphy: Pitch counting is helpful for all age groups of throwers, but

more useful in the younger athlete. They are more prone to injury and overuse is much more significant. Pitches should be limited to the 50-60 range per game, with the pitcher receiving at least two days rest before pitching again. Remember, if these pitchers are also position players, pitch count should be further limited based on their throwing activities.

MIAMI: So much of the season rides on the return of quarterback Ryan Williams and a rebuilt defensive line. Williams is still rehabbing a torn ACL and is hoping to return early in the season. Kevin Olsen looks to be the starter going into fall camp. The Canes will be very effective on offense with the likes of tailback Duke Johnson and receiver Phillip Dorsett. Miami’s much criticized defensive staff needs to take some of the positive momentum from the spring. CLEMSON: Some of coach Dabo Swinney’s priorities for spring practice were replacing skill position players such as quarterback Tajh Boyd and receiver Sammy Watkins. Cole Stoudt was named the starting quarterback after spring drills ended. The Tigers will have plenty of offseason motivation with early games against Georgia, Florida State and North Carolina in the month of September. Petit theft is a crime prohibited by Florida State 812.014 and it refers to knowingly obtaining or using the property of another with intent to, either temporarily or permanently deprive the person of the property. If a person enters a plea to Petit Theft, he or she may end up with a permanent criminal record. First time offenders are usually offered probation or a diversionary program.

What happens if I am accused of Petit Theft? Usually the person is given a Notice to Appear, which requires them to schedule a court date within 10 days. Notice to Appear is given instead of arresting the person, and it is usually because they don’t have a criminal history and are not a flight risk. Petit theft is considered a second degree misdemeanor if it is under $100.00 or first degree misdemeanor if the property allegedly stolen is worth between $100.00 and $300.00.

BUZZ: What is your culinary background? LB: My ex-husband was a sous chef at one point in his life and taught me all I know.

I developed a love of cooking from there. When I fell ill, I turned to food to heal but I couldn’t use the food I was accustomed to eating. I had a restricted diet and needed to find ways in which to make vegetables/plant based foods taste gourmet! I received my Level 1 certification in raw food prep at Hippocrates Health Institute. I plan to further and master my culinary skills but haven’t found the right plant based outlet yet! :)

BUZZ: What are some of the delicious ingredients or menu items that your clients can expect? LB: A lot of green leafy vegetables, red and orange, high carotene-based veggies, sprouts and microgreens,

green juice smoothies, plant-based omega-3 fats like chia, flax and hemp seeds. Menu elements can also include red/blue fruits that contain healthy flavonoids and antioxidants, quinoa – the list of delicious, vitamin-packed ingredients can go on and on!

If you looked in a thesaurus for the exact opposite of lazy, you would find a picture of Sherri Osborne. Always on the move, Sherri Osborne rarely has a dull moment. There was a time, not long ago, when her days were full of activities related to a barn full of horses. There were lessons, trail rides, summer camps, and more. Now, Osborne Quarter Horses only boards horses, and Sherri’s time is eclipsed by her other four legged friends, dogs. Although Sherri has been raising and training her own Labrador retrievers for over thirty years, in the last ten years, demand for her dogs and training skills has markedly spiked.

Ask Sherri what her secret to success is, and she reveals that you must learn to communicate with each dog as an individual. After an understanding is established, it is simply a matter of patience and repetition. Her modest reply is deceptive in its simplicity. She makes it seem like anyone could do what she does, but in reality her talents are quite rare, especially in this area.

SAMUEL ADAMS REBEL IPA GRILLED ORANGE ROSEMARY CHICKEN

Unlike the James Dean version of a rebel, the new Samuel Adams Rebel IPA does have a cause! And, that cause is to make your 4th of July grilling fireworks worthy. We’ll step out of the box a bit; this IPA deserves better than the usual grilling marinade. Meet the Samuel Adams Rebel IPA Grilled Orange Rosemary Chicken. Upon opening a bottle of Samuel Adams Rebel IPA, you’ll be able to smell the piney-ness immediately, and we all know rosemary goes wonderful with chicken. There’s a hint of citrus that makes me think of summer. Lemon, you say? Nope. We’re gonna use roasted oranges, and create a silky rosemary orange cream sauce to top it off when we’re done. Who does that for 4th of July? YOU do! ***Note – when cooking with citrus, always use a nonreactive pan/dish. Reactive pans are aluminum or copper – DO NOT use these with citrus.***

INGREDIENTS 6 whole oranges 1/3 cup grapeseed oil 1 Tbsp. fresh lime juice 3 cloves garlic, grated 3 Tbsp. shallots, grated 3 Tbsp. fresh rosemary, finely chopped 1 tsp. kosher salt ½ tsp. freshly ground pepper 2 lbs. chicken breast or thighs ¼ cup dry white wine ¼ cup heavy cream or half and half ½ cup unsalted butter, cut into pieces DIRECTIONS Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Cut oranges in half. Lightly brush pulp with grapeseed oil. Heat an ovenproof pan on high. Place pulp sides down in the pan and quickly sear. Turn oranges over and place in oven until almost soft. Combine next 7 ingredients in large, zippered plastic bag. Make sure it’s combined. Add the juice of 4 of the oranges, reserving 2 for garnish. Add chicken, seal and refrigerate for 2 hours. Reserving the marinade, cook chicken on oiled, heated grill for approximately 4 to 6

ROYAL PALM VILLAGE WINE & TAPAS Interview by Monica Stouder and photos by Monica Lea Imagery: MonicaLea.com

What is unique about your bar?

What is your funniest customer story?

We are a wine/craft beer retail shop by day & restaurant/bar/ retail by night. You can purchase any bottle of wine at retail price plus a small corkage (although always features without corkage) & enjoy it in house with our seasonal tapas menu.

We have an old fashion popcorn maker that we make one of our menu items-Truffled Popcorn. On more than one occasion a server has caught the same customer going up to the machine & self serving himself with his hands- which is totally unsanitary. When questioned, he replied “It’s okay, I know ‘Tori’ the owner.” Our staff always gets a kick out of this story as my name is Kori, not Tori.

When is Happy Hour? All day, everyday with $4 wine features & rotating $2 bottled craft beer features. What kind of weekly drink specials do you all offer?

Friday - 5 p.m.-8 p.m. complimentary wine tasting with no corkage on any bottles that are featured Tell us about your best selling drink

What inspired the bars name?

Well it is a difficult choice with about 2,000 wines & 200+ beers.. but, one thing that is somewhat unique is our Sangria. We make both white & red sangria that is very tasty and refreshing!

Royal Palms Drive is the street on which we are located and for those who grew up around Jacksonville the historic area was well known with the old post office & theater. “Village Wine & Tapas” clearly identifies what we offer.

Tuesday - Two for One Glass wine or Draft Beer 5 p.m.-7 p.m. Thursdays - Live Music

Go to Henriettibles.com for other 4th of July recipes!

What do you want more people to know about your business? First, that we are a retail store open for business daily, with exception of Sunday. We are very focused on farm to table as far as the restaurant is concerned working with local farms such as Twinn Bridges, Alvarez Farms & have a garden of our own that we source a lot of vegetables & herbs from. We support and source locally as much as possible. Additionally we have offsight catering, private wine tastings and educational seminars.

Monday - No corkage on any bottle of wine

minutes per side (internal temp should be at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit). Allow chicken to rest. Place reserved marinade in heavy saucepan & heat on medium high until reduced – about 10 minutes. Strain into another saucepan & add cream; bring just to a boil, whisking entire time. Reduce to low heat; whisk in butter a little at a time. Add salt & pepper as needed. Serve over grill chicken. Garnish with reserved oranges.

Do you serve any local wines or brews? We support all of the local breweries. We constantly rotate our craft beers- focusing on the seasonal specialties. Do you all have music or any kind of events? We offer live music on Thursday evenings from 7p.m. -10 p.m. with local artist. Any local Jax celebs stopped by for a drink? Several- although I feel as if I shouldn’t expose them by name- several football players, coaches, news broadcasters, weathermen & pro surfers.

Sourcing Suds

Brew Time By Marc Wisdom More than once, over the past five years of writing about beer, I have made the statement that beer is a social beverage. One has only to look at the proliferation of tap rooms, craft beer bars, brew pubs and gastropubs to notice that most are full of friendly, jovial and loyal beer aficionados. What is it about beer that attracts this kind of loyalty and fanaticism? To answer that question we have to go back the dawn of civilization, which by no coincidence, many sociologists and archeologists believe beer had a defining role. Around 9,000 years ago, in the arid land of Mesopotamia (now modern day Iran), beer is believed to have been discovered in what can only be described as a happy accident. Before that time, man was nomadic, moving from place to place seeking food and shelter. But, because beer required grains that took time to grow and manpower to tend, man began to assemble into tribes. Within these tribes a hierarchy began to emerge; there was a leader and followers – civilization had been born. Fast forward several millennia to the time of Vikings. As early as 500 A.D. it is believed that Vikings drank a brew made from honey and grains called mjod. Beer was so loved in the Norse lands that Vikings were known to stop mid-battle for a beer break. After the break they would strip themselves of their armor and shirts and fight berserk, which is the word Norse word for “bare shirt.”

By Brian Little

Britain, a renowned beer-drinking nation, probably was well-acquainted with brewing by the time the Romans arrived in 54 B.C. A series of domestic and military accounts found in the 1980s, written on wooden tablets were dug up at the Roman fort of Vindolanda, at Chesterholm in modern Northumbria, dating to between 90 A.D. and 130 A.D. They reveal the garrison at Vindolanda buying ceruese, or beer, almost certainly from brewers in the local area. And what account of beer’s history would be complete without a mention of the importance of beer to the political, economic and social history of Germany? Over 3,000 years ago beer appeared in Germany, mostly brewed in tribal units by hausfrauen. Later the art was taken up by monks and nuns. But, it was not until the feudal lords of southern Germany and burgher-merchants took over that beer in Germany switched from aales to lagers. The strange bedfellows of politics and religion began intertwining themselves into the fabric of German beer, understanding that he who wielded power also controlled the beer that defined the German people. Beer had woven itself into the society of the German people in such a way that it could not be extricated without causing major social upheaval. So, if history shows us anything, beer is indeed a very social beverage. So social in fact that it was the very reason society was

Source DAHLIA’S POUR HOUSE Andrea Dahlia opened the doors to this beer oasis in July of 2012 wanting to create a laid back bar that’s serious about its beer. “I want people to be able to come and try a lot of beer and styles that they’ve never had before,” said Dahlia. “In addition to our beer, we have games and events that allow people to interact and meet other local beer lovers.” With 85 different taps, a selection of over a hundred different cans and bottles, and even a few meads on draught, Dahlia’s Pour House has one of the largest and most diverse selection of beer in Jacksonville. With the recent trend of local breweries canning their beer, Dahlia’s has made it a point to carry most, if not all, of them! “Cans are easier to carry and distribute, and the flavors of the beer are preserved better,” said Dahlia.

Suds PEOPLE’S PALE ALE Intuition currently cans three of their brews ( Jon Boat, People’s Pale Ale, and I-10 IPA). In addition, they’re getting ready to launch a fourth canned product: King Street Stout. People’s Pale Ale is the flagship offering from Intuition. It’s a crisp and refreshing ale, offering a solid combination of citrus hops and caramel malt flavors. It’s approachable and easy to drink. The lemon and grapefruit notes play a prominent role on the palate. The finish is slightly bitter and mildly sweet. Dahlia’s Pour House is located at 2695 Post Street at the intersection at King. PROFESSOR DUBIOUS IS THE MOST KNOWLEDGEABLE PERSON IN THE WORLD BY A LARGE MARGIN. HERE, HE DEIGNS TO RESPOND TO YOUR ILL-INFORMED QUERIES. Why do things look smaller when they’re farther away?

Etiquette Essentials By Eric Engel

DOOR HOLDING ETIQUETTE

- H. Akkerman, Arnhem, Netherlands

Professor Dubious Says: For centuries, this effect was thought to be due to an optical illusion. Many theories were put forward to explain it, but none ever was fully convincing.

The investigations of modern science, however, have finally put this question to rest. Careful studies have shown that objects which are farther away actually ARE smaller. Thus, the dog down the street is smaller than your dog. In fact your dog could probably take the dog down the street in a fight every time.

When you go through a door, it’s customary to glance behind you to see if anyone else is about to come through. If there is someone, you hold it for them, or at least give it an extra little shove so it doesn’t slam shut in their face. I observed this rule several months ago when I was leaving an old office building and an old man with a cane was right behind me. I held the door, stepped back, and patiently waited for him to pass.

What will robots do for us? - J. Biseda, San Francisco, CA

Professor Dubious Says: The Asaki-1 robot being developed by Kurosawa

Industries is intended as an assistant for your main robot, taking care of the supplemental tasks that are not covered by standard household robots. While most robots currently under development can handle work such as cleaning, cooking and organizing, the Asaki-1 takes care of the tasks that take up the majority of your time, such as watching TV, attending sporting events, and complaining about your spouse to friends.

Why do some things taste better than others?

Little did I know that the “in” door for the building was “out of order.” This being right after lunch time, dozens of workers were now trying to reenter the building. By the time the little old man had passed through the door, a sizeable line had formed outside. They waited for the old man—but they weren’t about to wait for me. By the time everyone had entered, there were several people behind me waiting to leave. The last in line was an old lady carrying a large bag and two boxes. After letting her through, I offered to help her carry something. It took us three minutes to get to her car, two minutes for her to unlock her doors, and another four for her to situate her boxes and bags and thank me for my time.

- J. Bialik, Peetee, NC

Professor Dubious Says: Our bodies naturally crave cake.

How good we perceive the taste of something to be is in direct proportion to how much cake they contain. For instance, ice cream cake has a Toggfield Cake Index (TCI) of 0.86, so it is perceived as quite tasty, whereas topsoil has a TCI of <0.01, and thus is not popular as a food.

Realizing I had left my briefcase by the door, I rushed back—praying no one else was waiting to get in or out. It was here that I discovered why no one would take the door from me. Above it, a big white sign read “WET PAINT”. The same sign had been hung on the inside, but had apparently escaped my detection. The painted door had only one flaw in it—my big hand print right in the middle.

June Horoscope

Written by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

Aries (March 21- April 19) Don’t expect any “love at first sight” this month. You will need to dig deep into someone’s intellect to find something you like, because the cover of this book … well, let’s just say no one would read it from the way the cover looks.

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) This is where you want me to say, “if you try hard enough, they will notice how special you are.” I don’t write that crap; you’re reading the wrong paper. They are ignoring you for a reason. Surprise, they are fixed on someone who isn’t you! I’ll save you from having to hear it from him/her. It’s not you, it’s them.

Gemini (May 21 – June 21) You’re not giving mixed signals, you’re giving bad ones. What you think is funny or cute doesn’t always come out as such. Quit being annoying, and try a different approach. You’ll notice people quit walking away. Cancer (June 22 – July 22) Looks like this month bragging may actually work for you Cancer. Drop some not-so-subtle hints on what’s

going on good with you and watch people start to warm up to you. Who thought this negative quality would actually start to work for once!?!

Leo (July 23 – August 22) What you thought was going to be a fun summer fling is going to surprise you. Beware of the clinger. That fling is going to try and, “make it work.” They may even go as far as to, “fight for you.” Enjoy the baggage. Virgo (August 23 – September 22) Your mate is going to drive you crazy this month. To the point where you’re going to want to do something foolish and make a mistake. The type of mistake you can’t shake and includes a visit to the doctor. I advise to put up with your crazy mate, buy some earplugs and just ride it out. Libra (September 23 – October 22) This month Venus will link up with unpredictable Uranus in your relationship house, and this

conjunction could throw interest your way. Yeah, I just read that myself. What!?! Apparently Uranus rules technology. So you will garner some attention online, just not with any keepers. Fire up the Tinder profile!

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) Easy Captain Hormone Overdrive. You may need to turn it down a notch or two. So, yeah, it’s been awhile, but don’t make it so obvious. You’re the type that probably says your tired of flings. Take a look in the mirror! Look how desperate that person is. You would have only a fling with you also.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) NSA fling alert! Venus is in Aries, your fifth house of passion and creativity this month. Who knows what that really means, but who cares. Sounds awesome. Take advantage and use that built-up mojo and hit the town and have some fun. Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) I know it’s hard to concentrate on work when you are waiting for loveavenger88 to email you back. Online dating is fun, but you are a little too involved right now. I hear real, breathing people are fun too. Quit looking at your phone every 2 minutes. It’s probably a fake picture you’re in love with. Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) You know how your friends have been talking lately how your current love interest is starting to rub them the wrong way? Well, heed to their advice. Your interest should move onto something that isn’t so blah, blah, blah, annoying, a nnoying, annoying Pisces (February 19 – March 20) Venus is moving through Aries, which will help stabilize the penetrating Mars. Yup, that’s what I

said. What does it mean though? You will have a sudden burst of confidence. I doubt you will do anything with it, but it will be there. Don’t get mad at me, you’re the lazy, self-pitying one.
