Making a Difference: nonprofit leaders in our community

In 1989, the Down Syndrome Association of Jacksonville was founded by a handful of families who recognized the need to have a support group in the Jacksonville community,” Revels said. “The focus was, and continues to be, to provide awareness and education, and to help individuals with Down syndrome reach their potential. Our association has continued to grow with over 1,500 individuals, families and community members.”

First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross

THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON I’VE INTERVIEWED THIS MONTH He’s the outspoken Florida-based GOP media consultant and campaign adviser who founded the #NeverTrump movement. Rick Wilson says he will continue to oppose Trump to the bitter end — and will even support the recent push for a conservative third-party candidate he says better reflects Republican values. “I am willing to look at a conservative third-party option, even if that candidate can’t pull this thing off and win,” Wilson told WJCT. “And I’m willing to under vote if I have to, and not fill in that line on my ballot.”

“Never means never,” said Wilson. “The nominee of our party is not qualified in any dimension to be the nominee. His ideas, philosophies, and temperament are dangerous, not only to the future of the party, but of the country.” Wilson, who has called Trump everything from a “narcissistic sociopath” to a “draft-dodging blowhard” (and those were some of the kinder comments) says #NeverTrump must continue, if only to save Republican candidates in downballot contests who now have Trump as their standard-bearer. “Never means never,” said Wilson. “The nominee of our party is not qualified in any dimension to be the nominee. His ideas, philosophies, and temperament are dangerous, not only to the future of the party, but of the country.” Make sure to tune into First Coast Connect each weekday morning at 9 a.m. on WJCT 89.9 FM to hear more of the most compelling newsmakers sparking debate this election year! 14

Community Focus You don’t have to be perfect to be the perfect parent. A closer look at our local nonprofit community

Epilepsy Foundation of FL www.efof.org

The Epilepsy Foundation of Florida (EFOF) leads the fight to stop seizures, find a cure, and overcome challenges created by epilepsy. EFOF was established in 1971 as the principal agency for epilepsy programs and services sponsored by the State of Florida, servicing the estimated 400,000 Floridians who suffer from the condition

This is one of the main ideas supporting the need for foster care, not only in the U.S., but specifically right here in Jacksonville. Currently, there are over 300 children in Duval and Nassau counties living in a foster family, with many more children waiting their turn. This is where Family Support Services of Northeast Florida comes in. And it is where the general public, perhaps even you, come in as well. You may not be perfect. But to a child in need, you just might be a hero.

City Rescue Mission www.crmjax.org

The City Rescue Mission has been serving Northeast Florida since 1946. Its mission is to transform the lives of the homeless and needy, serving them through the love and compassion of Jesus Christ. They provide food, clothing, shelter, emergency services, and residential recovery programs to men, women, and families.

Working off this idea, CROP Creative Media was proud to be the production team behind the latest advertisement for FSS. Partnering alongside advertising agency, Daigle Creative, CROP crafted a 30-second spot that tells the story of a little boy meeting his foster mom for the very first time. What the viewer first sees looks like a typical day at an average neighborhood playground - a sweet, little boy playing outside, superhero action figure in hand. But as the camera cuts in for a close-up, we see his eyes light up, and the look on his face changes to one of surprise and delight. Then, we see the superhero figure standing in front of him, smile on her face, and arms held wide. As he jumps into them, suddenly the “real” scene is in front of us - a woman dressed in shorts and a tee shirt, not a superhero outfit. She’s not actually a superhero, but she is a foster mom, and in this child’s eyes, that’s the same thing. Credits go to Megan Stevens, Producer; Michael Hancock, Director; Andre Labous and ARRI Amira; High Contrast Lighting and Grip Support; and First Coast Talent Agency. JUNE 2016 • iwantaBUZZ.com

“The JCC is more than just a chorus; it is truly a life-changing experience. The Chorus has opened me to new experiences, provided me with oncein-a-lifetime opportunities and helped me discover singing is not just one of my interests, but rather a lifelong passion.” – JCC Touring and Concert Choirs Student

Jacksonville Children’s Chorus EXPERIENCE JOY THROUGH MUSIC The mission of the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus is to provide a high-quality choral music education for children of diverse backgrounds, fostering teamwork, self-discipline, accomplishment and pride while filling an important cultural need in the community and sharing the beauty of the choral art form through artistically excellent performances. The Jacksonville Children’s Chorus (JCC) was founded in 1995 at Jacksonville University to fill a need for a children’s music program in the area. In that first year, JCC had only 16 voices. Since then, it has grown to a membership of more than 350 singers participating in five choirs.

JCC gained name recognition in 2001, when it was named the designated children’s chorus of the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra (JSO). To ensure diversity among its members, in 1998 JCC established a scholarship program to provide financial assistance to families who cannot afford tuition. This year, more than 35% of the singers receive either partial or full scholarships. The Board of Directors appointed Darren Dailey as the Artistic and Executive Director in 2006. Since that time, JCC has expanded its choir programs, and has developed self-produced, sold-out concerts including the annual Martin Luther King, Jr. “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” event, the annual Cool Side of Yuletide holiday concert and concerts featuring guest artists such as

Amy Grant, Voca People and Kristin Chenoweth. As JCC grows, it has created new choirs and new opportunities for its singers. The Young Men’s Chorus, established in 2011, is designed to meet the specific needs of young men who are experiencing voice expansion. The Touring Choir, established in 2011, travels nationally or internationally in the summer after a year of hard work and performances. From 16 singers in 1995, JCC has developed into one of Jacksonville’s most important providers of music education, enriching the lives of singers and audiences across the region. The Jacksonville Children’s Chorus is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a new logo and website design. Visit JaxChildrensChorus.org.

EVENTS TO LOOK FORWARD TO:

INSIDER LOOK “It is gratifying the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus program covers so much of what is not available to children in the Duval Public Schools. The children who have an opportunity to participate in your Chorus are very fortunate to have this outstanding musical training available to them. The entire community benefits from your talent and that of the children.”

JACKSONVILLE’S DANCING WITH THE STARS

June 4 Times Union Center JaxDWTS.com The Jacksonville Children’s Chorus partners with A Social Affair Dance Studio for this exciting event. Local celebrity dancers are partnered with professional ballroom instructors to learn to dance, compete for the mirror ball trophy and to be named Jacksonville’s favorite dancer. Show also includes performances by all of the JCC choirs.

SUMMER TOUR

June 24 – July 5 Northern European Performance Tour The Jacksonville Children’s Chorus Touring Choir will begin an exciting tour with performances in northern Europe. These singers, ages 12-18, represent all facets of the northeast Florida and South Georgia communities. Under the direction of Artistic and Executive Director Darren Dailey, the Touring Choir will perform in Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Russia, Finland, and Sweden.

DO YOU KNOW A CHILD WHO LOVES TO SING? While prior musical training is not necessary to participate in the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus, an audition is required. Children will be placed in the appropriate choir group based on their skills, maturity and readiness. Singers do not need to bring a prepared audition piece. The 15-minute audition process is quick and simple. A conductor will listen for the singer’s ability to match pitches, to learn a simple tune and to hold one’s voice part against others. There is no fee to audition. Full and partial scholarships are available based on financial need. Tuition is charged to cover a portion of the actual cost of the program. Auditions are held by appointment May through August for the following school year based on availability. Visit JaxChildrensChorus.org/Audition or call (904) 353-1636 to schedule an audition.

Putting the Brakes on the Summer Slide

By Robin Warren, WJCT Education Outreach Coordinator

Summer is here! But along with warmer weather, trips to the pool, and the Fourth of July, comes a not-so-fun reality...the summer slide. The summer slide describes what happens when young minds sit idle for three months. One study revealed that kids lose about 2.6 months of their math skills and approximately 2 months of reading skills during summer break. As a former teacher, a concern when school started back up in the fall, was spending too much time getting students back up to speed before proceeding to that year’s new information. So what’s a parent to do? I’m so glad you asked! As always, WJCT has you and your children covered. We have some tips to help your little ones of all ages put the brakes on the Summer Slide!

Be Our Guest! Relive the romance and magic of the “tale as old as time” in this live stage performance. The heartwarming tale of Belle and the Beast swirls to even greater life with its colorful costumes and the songs you’ve come to love. You’ll be swept away all over again!

• Watch WJCT-TV! This summer, you can rely on PBS KIDS and WJCT to provide a positive learning experience that is also fun. With school being out, there is more time to tune into the PBS KIDS programs your kids love - more Wild Kratts, more Curious George, more Ready, Jet, Go! - and more of the key learning they need to stay ahead of the summer slump. • Have your kids teach you about what they learned at school. Focus on a major subject, such as math or science. If your third grader had to memorize the multiplication table, have them quiz you on it. It will also be fun for the kids to see how smart you are! • Read, read, read! Read with your child every day, many times a day. Read books, signs, posters—anything with words. Read in the morning, in the afternoon, and at night. Read at the park, in the living room, at the pool. Read print everywhere you can find it! • Stimulate their minds. You can also keep kids stimulated by taking them on outings, such as a children’s museum, the zoo, an art museum, the theater, or a professional baseball game.

DISNEY’S BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Watch Jet Propulsion and the crew open up a world of possibility on the PBS KIDS science series “Ready, Jet, Go!” weekdays at 7:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on WJCT-TV 7.1 (Comcast 8 & 440).

So keep kids engaged in learning this summer. (But don’t tell them that they’re going to learn anything because then they’ll resist!) Kids are always up for a new adventure, and when they learn something in the process, that’s even better. Until next time!

Two Thumbs Up How Good Food Should Taste

The already swimsuit savvy don’t necessarily have to keep an eye on thigh-corrupting carbs or calorie counting. But as a curvaceous foodie, I find that prior to summer’s pre-beach appearances, a restaurant like Seasons 52 appeases both my palate and calorie-conscious consumption. With a seasonal and creative menu (yes, the derivative of the name), super fresh ingredients, and a caloric accounting for each dish, Seasons 52 delivers tasty food without forking out the guilt of eating a great meal. The pre-cursor to the upcoming summer menu includes spring items such as Honey and Herb All Natural Roasted Chicken on a bed of fern fiddle heads, Caramelized Grilled Sea Scallops with lemon risotto and asparagus, beautiful salads, fresh veggie sides, house-made soups, and delicious mini desserts.

Dessert: Toasted Almond Amaretto – layers of cake saturated with Amaretto topped with whipped cream and almond. There are many of these minidesserts for sweet-seekers to choose from all at a $3 price point.

All flavorful and health conscious courses, that aren’t presented in a blatant attempt to make more corpus consumers like myself uncomfortable. Highlights: The starter for my amazing eating experience included the Duck Lollipops. These succulent wings had a crispy skin even though it was blanketed with a sweet and spicy glaze. Great flavors on this appetizer to be sure (and the hot towels that were brought to the table for post-duck sticky fingers was a perfect touch). Additionally, the Beef Short Rib entrée was fork tender and seasoned perfectly - another flavorful win. So away with you muffin top! With such tasty fresh food and clearly outlined menu calorie counts, springing into summer with a streamlined and beach-worthy body may just be an easier feat when choosing Seasons 52 to eat!

Happy Hour M-F 4-6:30 p.m. features discounts on signature cocktails, small plates for $5, and house wines. Enjoy local musical performances almost every day of the week. The menu touts 52 wines by the glass, hand-selected by George Miliotes, Master Sommelier. Event rooms available that hold up to 78 people and if you choose, comes with an event coordinator, custom menus, and valet parking!

KARA POUND Director of Communications

ST. AUGUSTINE DISTILLERY Interview by Monica Stouder

What is unique about St Augustine Distillery?

Any local Jax celebs stopped by for a tour or tasting?

So. Many. Things. To start, our home is a beautifully renovated commercial ice plant. We’re also the first craft distillery in Florida to make bourbon whiskey on a large scale. We are community owned and funded, and have created approximately 35 local jobs. We have also built partnerships with like-minded organizations, and we give as much as we can to local arts and cultural entities. We believe in supporting those who support us.

Governor Rick Scott, Mayor Nancy Shaver of the City of St. Augustine, and a good deal of local and national media folks, as well as politicians and officials. We make booze. We’re a pretty popular place to visit.

Tell us about your bestselling libation. We cannot sell cocktails on-site due to Florida law, but give free tours and tastings where guests are able to check out our museum, watch a short film, take a guided tour of our production facility, and then head into the tasting room for samples before exiting through the gift shop. The Florida Mule has always been our most popular sample.

What do you want more people to know about your business? Our owners, Philip McDaniel and Mike Diaz, have been a huge catalyst behind the change in legislation for craft distilleries in Florida. There were laws left from the Prohibition stating that a distillery could not sell their spirits on-site in a retail location. St. Augustine Distillery lobbied to change those laws and Philip started the Florida Craft Distillers Guild. We’re not exactly where we want to be yet, but we have made a huge difference. We are now able to sell two bottles per brand per person per calendar year. That’s been a game changer compared to originally not being able to sell any bottles at all.

CATCH HER LIVE: JUNE 12 at St. Augustine Amphitheater

Grammy, Emmy, and Tony award-winning musical icon, Cyndi Lauper will be live in concert on her “Detour Tour” in support of her upcoming studio album, “Detour.” BUZZ: How was working on this country album different than your other albums? CL: At first, I didn’t know the guys I was working on the album with. They play together all the time, so I had to figure out how to connect to them. I didn’t want to do cookie-cutter records. After we tested out some songs together, there came a point where all of a sudden, we all connected. So that took it to a new level, and a new bar of what this album could be. The connections in the song became real and soulful, and that’s the back bone of county music—soul.

BUZZ: With all the different genres of albums you’ve made, which was the hardest to make and why? CL: I thought this country album was going to be hard, but once I found myself into it, I was okay. I think it is about the roots of the music I play. It’s a singers’ record, and of course, I want to sing the roots of popular music.

BUZZ: Is an original album in the works or will you be tackling another musical first? CL: I am going to tackle another musical. I am already involved with one, and I might become involved with another. I also wrote an original song with Jean Michel Jarre, and I write on this tour. I’m probably going to do an unreleased song that I used to do and never recorded.

BUZZ: What has changed the most in you throughout the years, musically and personally? CL: I’ve come back around again, that’s how it always is. It’s a circle. The scary thing is when your life becomes like a Johnny Mitchell song or a Rolling Stones song, that’s when you know that art imitates life. When life imitates art, it’s a little scary. So, you have to watch not to go down that road.

BUZZ: Who is on the top of your list of artists to collaborate with in the near future? CL: While I still can, I would love to do something with Dolly Parton. I love her, and I love Jewel too. I was just listening to Jewels’ record, “My Father’s Daughter” and it’s so beautiful. She’s been part of my life in a way for a very long time.

David P. Trotti, P.A.

JUNE HOROSCOPE

Written by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

Aries (March 21- April 19) I read on this website you are supposed to keep your chin up even though Cupid has no arrow drawn for you. That little winged prick doesn’t even exist. Go out this month and see what you can make of it.

Libra (September 23 – October 22) It’s time to stop comparing the new or current mate to those of your past. Odds are they are fine. You are the issue. You chose a big ‘A-hole’ to date on the previous go around, and now you are being one yourself to make up for the void. Quit already.

DPTrottiLaw.com 904-399-1616 David@dptrottilaw.com

1542 Glengarry Rd. Jacksonville, FL 32207

What is your area of law? Family law, mediation, bankruptcy and many other legal issues that affect our day-to-day lives.

How long have you practiced law?

Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Looks like there is a co-worker who has an eye on you. Not all passes are subtle, so take them at face value: he or she wants you. Now be smart and don’t let this opportunity pass you up. That’s unless your company has a no internal dating policy. Then you will have to be sneaky.

Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) This month Venus is going backward in Gemini and blah, blah, blah. The quick story is your ex-loves may be trying to fire up old flames; bringing up old resentments and unresolved issues. That sounds like an absolute horrible idea. Stay away. Far away.

16 years.

Gemini (May 21 – June 21) Seems like the one you are crushing on is playing hard to get. Let’s play their game. Go flirt with others and see how he/she reacts. If they don’t seem to mind, then do it more deliberately in their face. Maybe they just didn’t see you.

Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) Looks like the person you have been pining over isn’t quite the person you thought they were. Of course they’re not! Did you expect them not to have flaws? We all do. Well, you all do. So quit being a Debbie Downer and try to get past their mangled looks and see the “inner beauty,” or whatever you call it.

What is your greatest satisfaction as a family lawyer?

Cancer (June 22 – July 22) You are like a salesman this month. No matter what pitch comes out of your mouth, people are taking it in and believing you. Looks like there could be multiple “loves” this month. Now go sell and always be closing.

Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) I know you are patient by nature, but if you don’t ask out your current obsession who has been throwing themselves right back at you, you may lose your chance. If you are waiting for the “right moment,” it comes around every time you talk to him/her. You are starting to annoy me, goat.

Leo (July 23 – August 22) It seems like your friends can’t afford a professional to talk to, so they are chewing off your ear with all of their “problems.” So be a good friend and do your best with advice, but this is going to make for a bad month on the love boat. It also sounds terribly boring.

Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) Your notion of knowing-it-all has a current mate irritated. Maybe someone else could be correct. Let’s say maybe… once? (As you udder the words, “yeah right,” read on.) It is a possibility, so try to just win 99% of your pathetic quarrels.

Virgo (August 23 – September 22) Poor little Virgo. Dating and finding/keeping a mate is going to seem like work in the weeks to come. You may have to take a vacation to get over the stress (and don’t take anyone with). It’s called alone time, which, I know, is a tough concept for you to grasp.

Pisces (February 19 – March 20) Let’s see if you can comprehend this concept. That person who is your really good friend, but always makes you drop them off at their own place at the end of the night. Yeah, that one. They don’t want to date you. Move on. You acting jealous won’t get them to change their mind.

What makes you and your firm unique? I have lived in Jacksonville since 1973 and graduated from Terry Parker High School. I also attended Jacksonville University and the University of North Florida before enlisting in the United States Marine Corps. This is a “children first” law firm. I value being able to help the citizens of Northeast Florida with quality service at an affordable price.

What are some frequently asked questions you receive from your clients? Regarding debt relief, will I be able to get credit again after I file bankruptcy? While I discourage running out and obtaining credit after filing for relief under Chapter 7 of the United States Bankruptcy Code, most of my clients receive pre-approved credit applications in the mail shortly after their bankruptcy is discharged. Please understand that you will probably have to pay higher interest rates.

What are my rights after an arrest? After you have been arrested, you have two rights: first, you have the right to remain silent and second, you have the right to an attorney. The arresting office is required to “read you your rights” via the Miranda Warning. The officer must also respect those rights, but you have to be careful and not make any comments. One may be able to fight an arrest on the grounds of police misconduct if the following occurs: the officer tries to trick you, intimidate, or force you into making a statement or saying anything at all before you have retained the counsel of a defense lawyer. To recap, do not give any information that may incriminate you at any time until you speak with your defense counsel.
