Making a Difference: nonprofit leaders in our community

We had our first National Campaign in 2008, and now BOOKS-A-GO GO is celebrating 9 years,

and over 850,000 books given out to children in need across the country and in 25 countries around the world! Our goal is to have book drives across the country, collecting books no longer used, and giving them to the millions of children who cannot afford them. We are so grateful for the many people who have participated to make this vision a reality!”

Betty Metz started the BOOKS-A-GO GO in 2007 with support of the community donating books to children in need. BOOKS-A-GO GO started at West Jacksonville Elementary School, where she volunteered just wanted to get books for her school. Requests for books came in from other schools, and BOOKS-A-GO GO began after a one-time community book drive began a continual flow of book donations. First Coast Connect with Melissa Ross

THE MOST INTERESTING PERSON I’VE INTERVIEWED THIS MONTH

Community Focus A closer look at our local nonprofit community

He’s a professional gambler and political analyst from Manchester, England and he’s putting most of his chips on Ted Cruz for the GOP nomination here in America in 2016. Paul Krishnamurty has been the chief political analyst for the world’s leading betting exchange, Betfair.com, for the past nine years. Betfair is regarded as one of the best prediction guides to elections. In the U.K., there are virtually no restrictions on political gambling, as there are here in the United States. Krishnamurty’s fresh perspective gives him a unique point of view of analysis for the 2016 U.S. presidential election. “In England, we have no partisanship one way or the other towards your candidates, so all my bets are research and data-driven,” he told First Coast Connect. Krishnamurty is devoting himself to the 2016 US elections and traveling the country to the key primaries and convention states. Throughout his journey, he will be writing a diary book of the whole experience while he analyzes races and predicts outcomes. He will be blogging regularly at his website PoliticalGambler.com, including blogging live during the debates and as the primary results come in. After mastering political betting in U.K. General Elections and party leadership contests, he moved onto U.S. politics for the 2008 elections. During the 2008 U.S. Presidential Election, he backed Barack Obama at 10/1 to become President and John McCain at 20/1 for the Republican Nomination. For the 2012 U.S. Presidential Election, he confidently and repeatedly advised readers to bet on Barack Obama winning a second term two years before the election.

American Lung Association Lungse.org

The mission of the American Lung Association is to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease. Through our 3-tiered approach of education, advocacy and research, we envision a world free of lung disease. Together, we continue our fight for clean air and healthy lungs.

“In England, we have no partisanship one way or the other towards your candidates, so all my bets are research and data-driven.” - Paul Krishnamurty

The combination of his deep political knowledge and non-partisan, hardheaded analysis of betting markets enables Paul to provide a one-of-a-kind viewpoint on politics. His sole agenda is to predict winners and make money. And for the record, although he’s betting on Cruz (with some side bets on Marco Rubio) to take the GOP nomination, Krishnamurty says the 2016 general election still favors the Democrats - but only slightly. Make sure to tune into WJCT’s First Coast Connect on 89.9 FM each weekday morning at 9am to hear from the most compelling newsmakers of the First Coast!

UCOM UrbanServ Inc UCOMJax.org

THE ARTS Lora Wood Artist and photographer Lora Wood has a love for art; a love that started very early in life and has sustained her through the many curves that it has taken over the years. “Art has always been a part of who I am. It has been my escape from reality, my therapy. My first love was photography. As a kid, my Uncle was always showing up with postcards and pictures from all over the world, and I ‘felt’ them! They weren’t just photographs. They were color, angles, experiences, feelings …I was hooked!” Her friends describe her as a “Florida Gypsy Artist.” due to her overwhelming need to travel. If she is not driving the back roads looking for new experiences and things to photograph, she is at her home daydreaming about traveling them and painting the visions that ensue. “There is a feeling that I get from creating something from nothing, a calmness that takes over. Each of my images, whether real or imagined, is a part of me, a feeling that I was experiencing; something that I couldn’t describe with words, so it had to be photographed, painted, drawn, or created. I never know what is going to come out, I just let go and see what it becomes.” She has a very eclectic style, a love of color, and when painting, prefers to work in acrylics and oils. She is currently a member of The Jacksonville Art Guild, The Art Center and the Art Guild of Orange Park. Her work may be seen on her website ShotsFromTheRoad. com, as well as The Art Center Galleries, downtown and various local business around Orange Park.

So Southside has another unique yet yummy spot to satiate starving seafood lovers. Crowded in the corner of the Academy Sports Store strip mall next to the Homegoods store, The Chatty Crab has opened its doors for crustaceanchowing customers. While 50¢ wings are also on the menu, The Chatty Crab has a full array of different crab boils that can be selected. This menu is unlike any in Jacksonville. It is truly unique in its boil offerings and I like it – a lot! The sauces, dips and boil seasonings are all the chef’s own signature concoctions. Boils can be had at many different price points, ranging from $18.99 to a familysized boil of $69.99 (feeds 4 or 5). You can purchase either a NOLA (spicier) or Chesapeake blend for your boil and, with each price point, add different elements such as crawfish, mussels, clams, Dungeness Crab, etc. There is the additive of hardboiled egg which is unusual, but incredibly tasty, as well. This crustacean-cracking spot is super casual (flip-flops acceptable) with a full bar, 10 TVs, and a lot of seating in the back room. While the boils here are the shining star, the menu offers other elements such as seafood by the pound (crabs,

Friendly, fast and informative, my service here was amazing as well. This is a great spot to have a cold drink, kick back with crab crackers in hand, and eat like a king - Neptune that is. FLORENCE K FlorenceK.com

HOW DID YOU GET STARTED WITH MUSIC? Music was always part of my life. I was born to an opera-singer mother and a guitarist father and I started playing piano at the age of 3. I studied classical piano for ten years and later on, I got interested in jazz and world music. I have released my first album in 2005 at age 22. WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION? I find inspiration in every little feeling, every emotion, every thought that creates a sparkle inside of me. And of course, in love! IF YOU COULD DO ANY JOB BESIDES BEING A MUSICIAN, WHAT WOULD IT BE? I went to college to study communication and journalism, which I loved, and it has actually helped me a lot since I’m the host of a radio show here in Montreal and I wrote a book last year. I also taught yoga for a while, because I love yoga and I wanted to share my passion for it with children and teenagers. I would probably work in that field or in the psychology field. WHO ARE YOUR MUSICAL INFLUENCES? I love Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Hector Lavoe, Buena Vista Social Club, The Beatles, Chucho Valdes. WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU’RE NOT WRITING MUSIC AND TOURING? I am the single mother of a beautiful nine-year-old and I love being a mom, so I spend the most quality time possible with her. I also love to read and I’m writing another book. TELL US ABOUT YOUR CRAZIEST FAN/TOURING STORY? I love when people come to me and they tell me about how a certain song of mine associated with an important moment in their life. A woman told me my album played on repeat during her delivery! And one of my song was the wedding song of a couple… i just find that it really shows how important music and how perfectly it underlines the most meaningful moments of life. WHAT’S YOUR FAVORITE INSTRUMENT TO PLAY BESIDES THE PIANO? I don’t play any other instrument! I can fake play guitar, a bit of trumpet and flute, but piano really is my main thing! HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO FLORIDA? JACKSONVILLE? DO YOU HAVE ANY TIME TO EXPLORE WHILE YOU’RE HERE? I’ve been to Florida many times, a big chunk of my family lives in Miami and Boca and I love it. It’s gonna be my first time in Jacksonville, though! CAN YOU SHARE A SONG FROM YOUR LATEST ALBUM THAT REALLY STANDS OUT FOR YOU? WHAT DOES IT MEAN? I didn’t write my latest album, because it’s a jazz standards recording with crooner matt dusk, but there is a song in there called “How Insensitive” that was written by Antonio Carlos Jobim, and that tells the story of a love that’s dying and how insensitive the person who wants to leave may look. Jobim nailed the emotion so perfectly and the melody is so beautiful. ARE YOU INVOLVED IN ANY NON-PROFITS OR SOCIAL CAUSES THAT ARE CLOSE TO YOUR HEART? I work with an organization in Montreal called “La Foundation Du Dr. Julien,” which is a social pediatrics clinic and center of activities for kids and teens from a difficult neighborhood. I teach yoga there once a week and I help them with their fundraising. WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU? I have just released a jazz and bossa album with Toronto crooner Matt Dusk and now I’m writing my next album. I also am gonna be doing a big tour in Canada and keep on hosting my music radio show! SAHARA CAFÉ AND BAR Interview by Monica Stouder

What is unique about your bar area? We have a large, three-sided bar central to the restaurant that is setup for social interaction. I’ve seen many firsttime customers welcomed in not just by employees, but customers as well. Strangers easily become friends here.

atmosphere. We have many repeat customers that we know by name and have their order or preferences memorized, which allows us to provide a personalized experience. Our goal is to turn new and first-time customers into regulars so that they always feel comfortable, welcome, and valued.

When is Happy Hour?

Have any local Jax celebs stopped by for a drink?

Happy Hour is Monday through Friday from 4 to 7 p.m. This includes specials on our drafts, well liquors, and hookahs.

Reggie Hayward and his fiancée have been known to come in, and we even had the comedian Doug Benson in before.

What kind of weekly drink specials do you offer?

When customers are having a really good time at your business what are they doing?

Besides our Happy Hour 5 days a week, we offer half off all draft beers on Wednesdays, as well as discounted bottled beers. Fridays and Saturdays, we have drink specials that change every week. Tell us about your best-selling drink. Our customers’ most favorite drink would be the Berries and Cream. It is a perfectly balanced cocktail between sweet, fruity, and citrus, with layered grenadine for flavor and to add to the attractiveness of the drink. What do you love most about Jacksonville’s nightlife? What I love the most is that while our city is big, you will always run into someone you know. We also have a great culture, from the art walks all across town to our museums. The way we treat our local businesses like treasures is hard to find anywhere else. The people here are what really make Jacksonville, Jacksonville.

MIXOLOGY

Berries and Cream

Normally they are hanging out with old friends, sharing a hookah, buying each other shots, and taking advantage of the social atmosphere by making new friends. What is your funniest customer story? That would be a toss-up between the time a regular stopped by Saharas before the Batman premiere dressed as Batman, simultaneously throwing me over his shoulder and yelling “Rachel” in a Batman growl; and then on Halloween, a group of regulars orchestrated an entrance in which our DJ played the Ghostbusters theme song and they entered in Ghostbusters costumes complete with one Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. What does your staff enjoy the most about working here? We enjoy getting to know our customers on a more personal level. Many of us have built relationships with them outside of work. It’s kind of like an ever growing family.

Do you serve any local liquors or brews? We have Intuition, Veterans United, and Bold City on draft.

What do you want more people to know about your business?

INGREDIENTS

Do you have music or any kind of events or games?

Aside from our unbeatable hookahs and drinks, by taste and price, we have a great selection of food. From Mediterranean to our American dishes, we have something for everyone!

Three Olives Whipped vodka

We have karaoke on Monday nights, a DJ on Thursday nights, and belly dancing every Friday night. We will be developing and adding more events soon.

Dragonberry Bacardi rum Simple syrup Fresh squeezed lime juice

What compliments do you hear most often from your customers? The most common and most appreciated compliment that we hear from customers is that we have a “Cheers”-like

YOUR LEGAL

CORNER ASK THE ATTORNEY MARCH HOROSCOPE

Written by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

Aries (March 21- April 19) Beggars can’t be choosers. It’s time you realize who you are and try dating within your range. If you are only a 5, quit trying to hook up with 9’s and 10’s. You know the rule: plus or minus one. Deal with it. Taurus (April 20 – May 20) Bring some adventure and play back into your love life this month. Let’s face it, you’ve been just flat out boring lately. And if you disagree, when’s the last time you tried anything different or new? Ha! See, I told you. You’re boring and predictable. Gemini (May 21 – June 21) Things are still hot this month, Gemini, but the old trust issue may come up. You may be turning a lot of heads this month, but your jealous nature may get in the way. Instead of a good romantic month, your inner beast may work its way out. Cancer (June 22 – July 22) Hard work is finally paying off. All those little things you’ve been doing are finally going to get that crush to notice you. I like that philosophy: do a thousand nice things in hopes he or she will talk to you as opposed to walking right up and talking to them to see if they are worth it. Keep it up. Leo (July 23 – August 22) I read this online for you Leo: “Things are going so well you need to take your relationship to the next level and perhaps get engaged or married.” Made me think that writer has been dating a Leo for a long time, or they are really onto something. Hmm… Virgo (August 23 – September 22) Love planet Venus spends this month in Capricorn, which is your lusty fifth house. This apparently means you’re not taking relationships seriously and being a “flirt.” We grown-ups use a different word for those playing the field and going out with different people all the time, but “flirt” is safer to print.

Libra (September 23 – October 22) According to an online source, “Your hoarding instincts are ebbing this month.” That doesn’t sound very romantic at all. Your hoarding instincts? Yeah, um.… no. Unless, of course, you are collecting several phone numbers for another lonely weekend, which should be pretty soon. Scorpio (October 23 – November 21) Romance kicks in this month. The Sun moves to Pisces, your fifth house of love. I’m not sure what that means to you, but my “Horoscopes for Idiots” book tells me others will find you a suitable mate due to planetary alignment. Crazy stuff, huh? Sagittarius (November 22 – December 21) This month you find yourself lucky with love. It’s time to indulge in a hedonistic fantasy or two. And why have just two if you can have more? And yes, hedonistic was a “word of the day” that I have been waiting to use. Capricorn (December 22 – January 19) And the no-brainer online advice this month fell to you, Capricorn. “Your workaholic tendencies could cut into baby-making hours.” That was the advice from an online competitor. Just in case you couldn’t figure that one out yourself, they (and I) are here to help you out. Aquarius (January 20 – February 18) Aquarius, you’re less like water and more like a werewolf this month. Your love life will peak this month with the full moon on the 22. Go out and feed your animalistic needs. Pisces (February 19 – March 20) You’re craving freedom this month. Lucky for you, you won’t have to worry about anyone bogging you down, because you will be alone. It’s ok. This should be something you are used to, little Pisces.

What do I do if I have a bunch of unpaid tickets and get pulled over? If a traffic citation does not get paid timely, the clerk issues a D-6 transmission to the Fla. If your license is suspended and you are unaware of it, the officer can cite you for a civil traffic infraction of Driving with a Suspended License unknowingly.
