5 Minutes With
Veteran Entrepreneur Isaac Belden
by Jeff Shuford
Why do you think veterans make outstanding entrepreneurs? How do you transition from the service to the world of business? I think there is a drive in us, something that is created through our service. The military takes us in and gives us an opportunity to see how far we can push ourselves. This is a bit easier because we are “voluntold” to do it, there is no backing out or quitting when times get tough. So when we get out of the military and we run into these challenges, we don’t quit. We drive forward, we know that the reward on the other side of that challenge is worth the struggle. What inspired you to start a business? I saw a need in my industry, plain and simple. Business owners need the services I provide and I wanted to offer an option where they know that they are part of a team. I am dedicated to the success of each of my clients, I believe that their success is OURS. Businesses who operate on the idea that they need to squeeze every cent out of a client that they can are holding their clients back. At the end of the day I love having the freedom to create a new culture in my space and finding ways that I can give back in the process. Who or what has influenced you most in your career? My grandfather has inspired me the most. He taught me the value of hard work and always being there for the people who need you. My wife has also been a huge inspiration. Her unwavering support in everything that has been built has been a massive part of what 12B has become. I also lost my best friend, a fellow veteran, in 2009. Although his loss was hard, it showed me how bad things can get if we allow all of the bad things we are going through to stack up. We need to have a solid team around us and we need to use that team. Life will be hard sometimes but we need to be open to the idea that we can’t do it alone. I bring that into my business in a big way!

The Most Interesting Person I’ve Interviewed This Month She spent decades at Jacksonville’s Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens, rising from volunteer to director of the organization. Now, Hope McMath has reinvented herself after a very public and controversial exit from the Cummer- as head of the new Yellow House, a gallery for socially conscious art and events. “The arts are a powerful bridge to find common interests,” McMath said. “And there are some buttons that need to continue to be pushed.” You can’t miss the bright yellow building at 577 King Street, just north of the CoRK Arts District warehouse. McMath has kept the space humming with exhibitions and community gatherings. She’s expert in this, after 22 years at the more traditional Cummer Museum. McMath stepped down from that role in 2016 after some complaints about a Cummer exhibit called “LIFT: Contemporary Expressions of the African American Experience.” It featured work by 10 local artists inspired by the famous song, “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing,” written by Jacksonville natives James Weldon Johnson and his brother Rosamund Johnson. The tune is renowned as the “black National Anthem.” The current exhibit at Yellow House, “Voices Unearthed,” runs through May 19. Learn more at yellowhouseart.org. 2018 This May, as spring comes into full bloom, the greatest golfers in the world will meet in Sawgrass, Florida to compete for one of the most prestigious titles on the PGA tour. Since the competition began in 1974, THE PLAYERS Championship has challenged PGA golfers to deliver their absolute A-Game on one of the most iconic, stunningly beautiful and spectator-friendly golf courses ever designed. New renovations to the course will make this year even better for competitors and spectators alike. The newly rebuilt and resurfaced greens ensure there is an adequate surface for competitors to show off their short game. A new lake has also been added between the 6th and 7th holes to create a better aesthetic for the TV audience. The competition will bring the top golfers in the world to Sawgrass. Rory McIlroy, Hideki Matsuyama, and Dustin Johnson to name a few. These three golfers have over 36 PGA tour wins combined and they’re all aiming to secure the Waterford Crystal trophy. Matsuyama is looking to make history this year. If he can pull off a win, he will become the first Japanese player to ever win THE PLAYERS Championship. Matsuyama has finished no worse than 23rd in his four previous appearances at THE PLAYERS, so we like his chances…though of course, Ricky Fowler is a favorite to win again…and if Tiger plays…. Regardless of who takes home the title, THE PLAYERS Championship is guaranteed to be a great experience for those attending. Country music star Luke Combs will perform for TPC attendees on May 8 as part of THE PLAYERS Military Appreciation Day Ceremony. Combs will perform at 6 p.m. on the 17th hole of The Players Stadium Course immediately following the Military Appreciation Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. Combs joins an impressive list of past TPC performers which includes Tim McGraw, Big & Rich, and Toby Keith. In addition to the Military Appreciation Ceremony, THE PLAYERS Championship is offering free tickets to active-duty military and discounted tickets to all military veterans. Everyone else can purchase one of many ticket packages ranging from $20 for the least expensive day pass to $239 for all week access. The Players Championship Stadium also has ticket options that include access to three exclusive lounge areas. The Turn, The Greenside Lounge, and The Hillside Suite offer a more luxurious experience in climate-controlled facilities with food and drink service. TPC is hosting a “Birdies for Charity” program which allows patrons to make a donation (minimum $20) for a chance guess of the total number of birdies that will be made by the field during the tournament. Guess the right number and you’ll win $10,000. Last year’s winner, Gerald Bettman correctly guessed there would be 1,469 birdies in TPC 2017 and won $5,000. Bettman then donated his winnings to the charity he supports, River Garden. THE PLAYERS Championship is sure to be a fun time for all in attendance! With multiple ticket options available, TPC is affordable entertainment for almost any budget. For those who have never been to TPC stadium, this year is a great opportunity to see the course World Golf Hall of Famer Ben Crenshaw once described as “... star wars golf, designed by Darth Vader.” 6

“
It is rewarding to see the students’ personal and professional growth, from being timid to now taking charge,” Chef Instructor Israel Santiago said. “They have to be done on time, they have to clean as they go, they multitask, and at the same time remember safety and sanitation, remember the basics and not forget who you are or where you come from. That is key.”

SECOND HARVEST CULINARY TRAINING PROGRAM | FEEDHOPENOW.ORG
In most classrooms across the country, students give presentations. Book reports, tri-fold boards and PowerPoint presentations are the norm. However, when students in the Second Harvest Culinary Training Program give a project report, they head to Aggressive Appliances. Here they have the opportunity to showcase the skills they have mastered to create a cohesive menu while also expanding their knowledge of both household and commercial appliances. Chef instructors and students agree on the menu items ahead of time. On a recent visit, Eastern European cuisine was on the menu, including Chicken Paprika, Warm Potato Salad, Weiner Schnitzel, Mixed Greens and Apricot Trifle. For the students, this is like a progress report; a time to demonstrate to their instructors what they have learned. In addition to hosting students in their working showroom each month, Aggressive Appliances has donated chef tables, knives and other items to the Culinary Training Program to help students get familiar with the tools found in a commercial kitchen. Chef Santiago says it is community partnerships like these that make the Culinary Training Program unique. “You can’t forget who’s helping you,” Chef says. “We can’t walk in the kitchen and do this without our partners.” To learn more about how your company or organization can get involved with the Culinary Training Program, please contact Idalia Nunez, Life Skills Education Manager, at 407-514-1037 or email Inunez@feedhopenow.org. 8

COMMUNITY FOCUS A closer look at our local nonprofit community
Florida Guardian ad Litem AuardianAdLitem.org
The Florida Guardian ad Litem Program is a state program which is appointed by a court whenever a child is removed from a parent by the Department of Children and Families because a child was abused, neglected or abandoned and can’t be kept safe in their home. At the first court hearing the Judge appoints the program. Their program assigns a volunteer whose job it is to be a voice for the child and to advocate for the child’s best interest. They also become the person who is there for the child in all matters, to help them, and to fight for them. The volunteer is invested in the child, connected to the community, trained by the program and most importantly passionate that they state unequivocally that “I am for the child.” The vision: The Florida Guardian ad Litem Program will continue to be a powerful and effective voice advocating for the best interests of Florida’s abused, abandoned and neglected children and be recognized and respected as a partnership of community advocates and professional staff. To the fullest extent possible, this vision will be realized through volunteers who will advocate as Guardians ad Litem for the children they serve.

ARTS UNLEASHED
Lora Wood ShotsFromTheRoad.com
Lora Wood is a native Floridian and a self-taught artist and photographer. Her friends describe her as a “Florida Gypsy Artist.” When not driving the back roads looking for new experiences, she is home daydreaming about traveling and painting the visions that ensue.
Leslie Kruzicki SharedVisionsArt.com
Born in NJ, Leslie enjoyed growing up in a creative atmosphere. She watched her parents perform in, or direct productions by the local community theater. Some of her parents’ friends were visual artists. Her first formal art lessons were at age 8. Leslie studied Fine Arts and Literature, receiving a dual BA from Ramapo College. She worked as a Graphic Artist in Virginia as well as opening her own Boudoir Photography Studio. For many years her garden and photography were her means of visual expression. She returned to painting in 2007. Her work has grown and expanded from photography & watercolor, to include a passion for mixed media. Learning new techniques and improving her skills is a constant goal. She is grateful to live in an area with an intensely active artistic community and belongs to several local arts organizations. Her work can be viewed and purchased online at SharedVisionsArt.com
Although she is skilled in many mediums, behind the camera is where you will normally find her. Lora’s desire is to capture the feelings of a moment rather than the mere image. This is reflected throughout her work. Although you may find her pieces to be a mix of her eclectic interests, her overall style borders more on an organized realistic approach. Lora’s background is in technology and customer service but her passion is in art. Lora is inspired by the beauty of the natural world and the rich tapestry of people in it. She is currently utilizing her technical skills to harness the power of the internet, thus allowing her to connect with other travelers, artist, and art collectors around the world. These interactions have allowed her to grow as both an artist and individual. Her art now hangs in private collections across the globe. Although she enjoys exhibiting in local galleries, shows and businesses, she has embraced and thrived in our global connectivity. You can see her work locally at The Art Center in the Landing throughout May and can always find her at Shotsfromtheroad.com
ARTS IN THE KNOW By Emily Scott
MOSH The Museum of Science and History opened its doors in 1969. Located in downtown Jacksonville, the museum has been central to the educational lives of local students since the mid-1990s. Initially called The Jacksonville Children’s Museum, the venue was later renamed The Jacksonville Museum of Arts and Sciences, before adopting the now iconic acronym people know today, MOSH. MOSH houses nine permanent exhibits, a planetarium and a rotating local art series. They also host three rotating exhibits, seasonal exhibits, school field trips, camps, interactive “edutainment” events and offsite outreach programs. Currents of Time

GETTING 2 KNOW
JENNIFER FOUCHÉ FROM CAST OF “CHICAGO” COMING TO JACKSONVILLE MAY 17-20 Jennifer Fouché comes to Jacksonville this May in the musical, Chicago, playing Mama Morton. Fouché hails from Detroit, MI., where her mother was involved in the arts. She began singing at age three and knew immediately this was her calling. As a child, she spent a great deal of time backstage at the Hillberry Theatre on Wayne State University’s campus, while her mother earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts. But though Fouché was around actors for the majority of her childhood, but never expected she’d one day become an actress herself. Fouché began her career as a recording artist, singing every genre but jazz. However, at aged twenty, with no experience, she won a gig with a jazz combo, thanks to a surprise audition arranged by her mother. Fouché’s mother heard the combo needed a singer, assured them she had just the girl, handed Jennifer a handful of famous jazz singers CDs, saying “learn these.” After studying the vocals and style, Fouché auditioned with the song “Good Morning Heartache,” by Billie Holiday. She was hired and sang with them for that whole summer in Alaska. Not long after joining the Jazz group, Fouché was contacted by Johnny Trudell, a Motown trumpeter, and asked to audition for his orchestra. The “audition” featured Fouché singing with the 15-person orchestra at a wedding reception. Around that time, she received her first record deal and toured overseas.
Fouché had long dreamed of performing in Broadway-style shows. She auditioned for the touring cast of The Lion King the Musical. Though she was not cast, she received such positive feedback she knew her passion was leading her in the right direction. Her first role in theatre was in “A Tribute to Motown” as Martha Reeves, of Martha Reeves and the Vandellas. During the first few words of her monologue, she realized wanted to go to school and study acting/theater. Following a undergraduate degree in journalism from Michigan State University, she graduated from The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in 2008. More than just an actor, now Fouché was a “double threat” – an actor who sings. (A triple threat is an actor who sings and dances!) Fouché’s most recent role is Matron “Mama” Morton in Chicago The Musical, currently touring in the United States. As her first Broadway tour and the first new “Mama” on tour in many years, she considers this role as a bucket list item. You can see her live onstage May 17-20, at the Times Union Center. Tickets can be purchased at fscjartistSeries.org Jennifer Fouché has been seen in Crown Heights(2017), Jessica Jones (2015) and Quantico (2015). She has been married to Eric Fouché since June 9, 2001. To learn more about her, visit JenniferFouché.com

YOUR LEGAL CORNER
Child Support - The Who, What, When, Where & Why. More often than not, we are asked how is child support calculated? Or, “Parent 2 and I agree to $X for child support, is this ok?”
FREE CONSULTATIONS
As we explain to every client with children going through either a Paternity Case or Dissolution of Marriage case, child support is not an arbitrary number picked by either attorneys or the courts. Rather, it is based on Florida Child Support Guidelines, enacted by the legislature. Although there are many nuances to child support calculations for the most part it can be easily explained.
PATERNITY
Child support will take into consideration both parties’ gross incomes (what is “gross income” can be an issue in and of itself ) as well as which parent will claim the child on his or her taxes. There are allowable deductions used in order to obtain net income, such as federal income tax withholdings, social security, Medicare, health insurance (parent’s portion), mandatory retirement payment, and union dues, among others.
ADOPTION
DIVORCE
Next, we take into consideration each party’s amount of overnights (note: just because it is a 50/50 split does not mean neither party is
REAL ESTATE
paying child support). In addition, we take into account which party is paying for a child’s medical insurance and what amount, as well as which parent is paying for childcare, and what amount. Assuming there are no extraordinary issues in a particular case which
LANDLORD OR TENANT
PERSONAL INJURY
would warrant a deviation in child support, we can take the above information and calculate a party’s child support obligation. The only time we are usually able to waive child support is if the obligation is “de minimis” in value. Parents should always remember that
PROBATE
child support does not belong to either party; rather, parents are merely trustees of child support.

CUISINE
Two Thumbs Up How Good Food Should Taste grilled crusty bread completed the dish. The second dish, also a favorite and difficult to find at times, was the Octopus, nested atop cannellini beans with sautéed baby greens and a most delicious blood orange gastrique. The octopus meat proved to be most tender inside, almost a melt in the mouth tenderness. The blood orange combined with the cannellini beans provided an exciting flavor combination. The third and perhaps my favorite was the Sautéed Mayport Shrimp, with one of the creamiest polenta I can remember. The dish was rounded out with pancetta and a smooth roasted pepper sauce that provided beautiful color to the entire meal, and of course the beautifully toasted bread to dip. Each one of these dishes is a perfect size for sharing and wellpriced. We will be returning to sample several other items that caught our eye. Barrique is a lovely spot, classy yet relaxed and comfortable. I give it Two Thumbs up for sure.

Along the promenade on St. John’s Ave in Avondale, you will find Barrique Kitchen and Wine Bar. The interior took me back to France and Italy; old world style was rustic, laidback and relaxed. The menu follows up on the mood offering a variety of rustic meats, cheeses, pasta and pressed sandwiches. Outside seating adds to the “café lifestyle” feel so prevalent in Europe, and to capitalize on that, I chose to eat alfresco and enjoyed every minute. Let’s talk food. My first choice as always is some wine, and the robust wine list offered up some tempting options, but I went with my usual; I asked my server for a heavy oaked Chard, and within a few minutes it was delivered, chilled, heady with a fruity aroma. The first dish was the much sought after burrata served with Fig Jam that was sweet and earthy but tempered by the peppery arugula and roasted tomatoes. The large slices of

The Stuffed Beaver
The Stuffed Beaver opened last week, so naturally, we had to check it out. This quirky place decorated in all things Canadian was a delightful change of pace. This hole-in-the-wall with 15 tables is serving up some French Canadian comfort food you will not want to miss. Offering food such as crepes, both savory and sweet, a variety of poutines, salads, sandwiches, and Castor Tails which is a marriage between a crispy croissant and donut. If you eat nothing else you must eat this. We started with the poutine, for those of you unfamiliar with this dish; poutine is a FrenchCanadian classic and is served across Canada. It’s a hearty dish of french fries, fresh cheese curds, and brown gravy. Ours was a respectfully-sized portion that the four of us devoured. The cheese curds were plentiful and fresh, gravy savory and the fries just right.

They aren’t fast food, they’re fresh, organic, and healing foods for personal and community health. The House of Leaf & Bean strives for natural-organic foods made fresh where West meets East. They even produce their own Tofu!
Next up we indulged in a few crepes. I don’t believe any restaurant is currently offering crepes so if you’re a fan as I am this is your place. One of our favorites was the savory Monte Cristo stuffed with cheese, raspberry preserves, ham, and turkey and finished off with a sprinkling of powdered sugar wrapped in a paperthin nicely browned crepe.
SEAFOOD ISLAND BAR & GRILLE
SeafoodIslandGrille.com Located in the heart of historic San Marco, Seafood Island Bar & Grill offers fresh seafood made to order that’s reasonable on the wallet. Break away from fast food for a quick and enjoyable meal under colorful umbrellas to enjoy the views.
On the sandwich side, we selected the Croque Madame, served on hardy Sourdough bread with ham, Béchamel, and Gruyere topped with a Sunny Side Up Egg. Perfectly grilled with the cheese melted just enough to bring out all the flavors. This was an excellent choice. Our most significant treat though was the Castor Tail… I can easily say I would come back and just eat this, it is quite addictive and is served with several variations of toppings. We opted for the maple spread and bacon sprinkles (think real bacon) here. Crispy, sweet warm, flavorful, decadent, how many adjectives do I need to convince you to get this item? I have been back and gave the Nutella-topped Castor Tail a test, and yep, it was great! This spot comes highly recommended by several of the best foodies in Jacksonville, so we encourage you to visit and make up your own mind.

May 5 THE NATIONAL
St. Augustine Amphitheater StAugAmphitheater.com
Four years have passed since the release of Trouble Will Find Me, and to the outside world it might have seemed like the members of the National spent that long interim working on everything but new songs. But in September 2014, two months before the band headlined the 20,000-seat O2 Arena in London, Aaron passed along the first set of musical sketches to Matt. “We really didn’t take much of a break,” says Matt. “We started working on this record the minute we finished touring the last one. The only break we took was from the constant pressure we put on each other.”
Vance Joy has an original voice which at first he kept to himself. Feeding on a diet of The Pogues, Paul Kelly, and whatever else was playing, he cut his teeth performing at open mike nights in Melbourne. His sound is a mix of folk music with pop influences. His songs capture the familiar pulse of everyday experiences in a unique and celebratory manner. His lyrics will reach out to you and hold on for a moment.

TROPIC OF CANCER Consistency and determination define Tropic Of Cancer. Since its creation in early 2000, TOC has been making its mark. 2011 was an exceptional year for Tropic of Cancer, performing at various festivals including the Jacksonville Jazz Fest, Blackwater Music and Arts Fest and the Veg Fest appearing and performing on two different television programs and inclusion on the radio program Electro Lounge. Also, They recorded and released the new album “India” which was named top ten local records of 2011 by the Florida Times Union. Now going 12 years strong, Tropic of Cancer is determined more then ever to bring its inspired and original mix of worldly jazz to the masses. In an ironic twist, the band lost founding member Brian Hicks to cancer. This was a blow to Tropic of Cancer and the entire Jacksonville music and arts community where Brian was deeply loved. Joining Jason and Colin in Tropic of Cancer as full time members are esteemed Saxophonist Eric Riehm, Percussionist and poet Ryan Sinclair, Sean Hendrix on Vibraphones with the return of Guitarist Dimitri Kavalieros. Versatile and comfortable in any situation Tropic of Cancer has performed at museums, art galleries, jazz clubs, bars and even the occasional wedding. They are a frequent presence at Jacksonville’s Art Walk, have played to support various charities and have even been the pit band for several local theater productions.
The Wonder Years May 11, 2018 | Mavericks Live
From the burning embers of the Lansdale, PA, band The Premier, came vocalist Dan “Soupy” Campbell, guitarist Matt Brasch, and multiinstrumentalist Nick Steinborn. Along with guitarist Casey Cavaliere, bassist Josh Martin, keyboardist Mikey Kelly and drummer Mike Kennedy, the line-up forms Philadelphia punk pop band The Wonder Years. Named after an essay of the same name lead singer Campbell wrote for his after-school education teacher, the band’s early years were spent releasing split EPs with other local bands.
Bahamas May 14, 2018 | Ponte Vedra Concert Hall
Bahamas is the solo project of Toronto-based guitarist and musical gun-for-hire Afie Jurvanen. With a carefully trained ear for melody that he’s honed during his time playing with the likes of Feist and Howie Beck, Jurvanen’s solo project has a stripped-down and contemplative sound that focuses on doing more with less, allowing his voice and guitar to do most of the heavy lifting on his quiet indie folk meditations.
GARY STARLING Synonymous with jazz on the Florida First Coast, artist-in-residence and professor of guitar at Jacksonville University, Gary Starling has inspired and broadened the horizons of hundreds of aspiring musicians. He has performed with Bob Hope, Diahann Carroll, Rita Moreno, Skitch Henderson, the Jacksonville Symphony Pops Orchestra and others. He has appeared with jazz artists Eddie Harris, Nat Adderley, Joshua Breakstone, Carla White, Jim Snidero, Ben Tucker, Doug Carn, Clarence Palmer and numerous others. In May 2012 Gary Starling was inducted into the Jacksonville Jazz Festival Hall of Fame which recognizes those who have made significant contributions to jazz in Jacksonville. Starling has years of experiential wisdom nurtured by personal encounters with Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass and other masters, benefits clients and students alike. The group are available for events: utilizing the best Jacksonville musicians, Guitar, upright bass and drums form the core jazz trio. The quartet or larger band adds sax, trumpet, keyboard, or others. Vocalist Carol Sheehan or singer/jazz violinist Rebecca Zapen may also be added, including a funky Hammond B3 organ. Solo guitar or duo is available for smaller, intimate settings. The band’s style spans jazz and pop standards, swing, bossa nova and samba, to funky jazz.
Licoln Durham May 22, 2018 | Jack Rabbits
Armed with old bastardized mid-century guitars, hand-me-down fiddles and banjos, homemade contraptions with just enough tension on a string to be considered an instrument and any random percussive item he can get his hands or feet on, Lincoln Durham is a Southern-Gothic Psycho-Blues Revival-Punk One-Man-Band with a heavy amped edge, preaching the gospel of some new kind of depraved music. With driving guttural beats backboning various growling stringed instruments Lincoln gives birth to a sound that transcends genres with his dark, poetic and raw writing style telling tales that E.A. Poe would have been proud of. UPLOAD YOUR EVENT TO iwantaBUZZ.com’s ONLINE CALENDAR.

CATCHIN' A BUZZ Interview by Anna Eatz Jax
MICHAEL GEORGE Beverage Director
River and Post
River and Post has two very different bar areas. The main bar, located on the first floor to serve the dining room, is a beautifully appointed space with reclaimed lumber planking covering the bar back. There is an impressive assortment of spirits lining the shelves. The second, is a rooftop bar, and it is all about the scenery! It offers the same specialty drinks and brews as downstairs, and is THE spot one would want to sit, sip on some well-crafted cocktails and take it all in. I did just that as I talked with Michael George, the beverage director, who still tends bar and according to him he loves it too much to step away from.
What is unique about each of the bar areas? Well it is quite evident once you go up to the rooftop bar it’s all about the ambiance. The view is magnificent, we call it “the experience”. When they step off the elevator it’s a WOW moment for the first timer. We serve premium craft cocktails and offer unique bar snacks. We are currently working on completing the kitchen on that level to better serve our clients. The first floor bar is more food centered, plus we still have the same spirits but a wider variety. We also have draft brews at the downstairs bar, that we currently do not have on the roof top due to lack of space. When is Happy Hour? From 4 to 6:30 each daily including weekends when we offer $3 Coors Lite and Yuengling, $5 well liquor and $5 Pinot Grigio and Cabernet. Tell us about your best-selling drink. We actually have quite a few; the Manifest Destiny is great on the roof top. It’s like a Peach French 76 with hints of Lavender. A beautiful, fun brunchy kind of cocktail. Some of my favorites are the MACHDM, an apple ginger Old Fashioned and is incredible; the Assertive Lady, a nice gin cocktail; and the Bourbon and Berry, a simple but fun drink. Do you serve any local liquors or brews? Most definitely! We are very focused on local products. To name a few: Manifest Distillery, Marlin and Barrel (from Fernandina), Carve...plus, we have Wild Buck and Don Suenos Tequila out of Miami. As for the draft brews: Bold City, Intuition, Veterans United,Aardwolf, and we do float others, as available. Do you have music or other entertainment? We do have live music on the weekend, Friday night, but we are looking to expand.
MICAMY
In a beaker, place a few chopped up apples, ½ oz. TURNING ONE IN MAY: ATLANTIC BEACH BREWING AND HYPERION BREWING
with tapping over 200 new beer recipes. Hyperion will bring several of its most popular beers on board on a regular basis in year two. In a word, describe year one of your brewery: ABBC: Enlightening. HBC: Rollercoaster.
Atlantic Beach Brewing Co-Owner Spencer Horn & Brewmaster Rory Malloy
Hyperion Brewing Owner Alex McKeown with Brewer Matt Fletcher
As they celebrate their one-year anniversaries in May and head into year two, catch up with the area’s “former” brewery newbies, Atlantic Beach Brewing Company (“ABBC”) and Hyperion Brewing Company (“HBC”) on what that first year’s been like for each of them. Since opening day 2017, and with the motto of “Aggressively Pursuing Craft,” co-owners Spencer Horn, Linda Horn and Chuck Horn and Brewmaster Rory Malloy have expanded the draft list, released several specialty bottles, and began canning and distributing three core beers ahead of schedule. Meanwhile, in Springfield, Hyperion Brewing introduced its “Bold, Rebellious Beer” concept, with constantly-rotating taps. Over the year, owner Alex McKeown and the brewery staff have engaged the local community in a number of hosted events, along
MAY HOROSCOPE
How has the reality of the brewery aligned with your expectations and visions during the planning stages? ABBC: More intense and exciting. It’s a 7-day a week, 15-hour-a day endeavor. HBC: The concept of “flights v. flagships” has been fun. Exhilarating, frustrating, highly experimental, with over 200 new recipes. Becoming the neighborhood bar we hoped to be for Springfield has come true. What have you learned most about the brewery business after being open a year? ABBC: To be more patient. HBC: If something can break, it will. And, the thing you didn’t think would break… will. The two breweries collaborated on a beer (Squid Ink Gose), offered at separate Asian-themed beer dinners in April. How did that come about? ABBC: Squid Ink was an off-the-cuff idea that seemed to stick; it screamed Gose, being dark and briny. We brewed the beer at each location.
HBC: Sarah, owner of Hottie Dawgs, had produced beer pairing dinners with ABBC, and we connected. With the success of the ABBC dinners, we decided to collaborate with Hottie Dawgs and ABBC together. Matt and Rory sourced a few ingredients of their own and did a brew day at each brewery. Now, how about those big one-year anniversary parties planned for May 2018? ABBC hosts its anniversary bash Saturday, May 5, beginning at noon. Festivities include a new bottle release of ABBC’s 98th Street Imperial Stout, aged in bourbon barrels for a year. And, look for another “surprise” barrel-aged release, along with a collaboration brew and various treatments. Hottie Dawgs features specialty dogs and cupcakes. Live music, raffles, games and prizes throughout the day. And, it’s also Cinco de Mayo, so be ready to party! Atlantic Beach Brewing Company is located at 725 Atlantic Blvd., Atlantic Beach. HBC takes the party weekend-style, covering May 1820. Opening at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 18, and at noon on Saturday and Sunday, the weekend features new beer releases, food trucks and live music. Waiting for the suspense of the announcement of the core beers? That’s at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Hyperion Brewing Company is located at 1740 N. Main St., Jacksonville (Springfield). ARIES (MARCH 21- APRIL 19) Most people have resolutions around New Years, but you should consider having them in May. This year has been less than spectacular in the love category, so either you need to get some new goals, or keep failing with the current ones.
LIBRA (SEPTEMBER 23 – OCTOBER 22) For you Libras with a mate, be ready for some change. Seems your mate is starting to look elsewhere quickly. If you really don’t care, just end it. Knowing you, by the time you come up with a decision, they will have probably already moved on anyways.
TAURUS (APRIL 20 – MAY 20) I would usually tell you about how bad your romantic endeavors will be this month, but since everything else in your life seems to be heading to shambles, I won’t mention your lackluster love life. Try to get things back in order, and then we will talk about your bad relationships.
SCORPIO (OCTOBER 23 – NOVEMBER 21) Instead of blaming everything and everyone else for your failures in finding someone, maybe, and this is just a maybe… it is you. No one likes failure, but as soon as you realize why you stink at relationships, you will be able to meet and keep someone worthwhile. Again, just maybe.
GEMINI (MAY 21 – JUNE 21) The dating scene hasn’t been all that kind to you lately. It’s time for a radical change. Different setting, personality type, maybe even age. I could be wrong, which I’m not, but if you eat Golden Smacks every morning, when you switch it up to oatmeal, even oatmeal seems to taste good all of a sudden.
SAGITTARIUS (NOVEMBER 22 – DECEMBER 21) Your past failures will allow you to shine with your new love this month. Some of those “awesome” lines you used in the past are actually going to work with flying colors this time around. Maybe he or she is just smitten with you, but who cares. Go with those killer lines.
CANCER (JUNE 22 – JULY 22) Sure you think you have the answers, but zip it and let your mate get in a word or two. You may want to own every conversation, but unless you have a cool voice like Morgan Freeman, then just shut it and listen.
CAPRICORN (DECEMBER 22 – JANUARY 19) This month the new moon is going to illuminate upon you. This is both good and bad. For some people, being in the dark is actually showing their better side. If you are one of these people, I can’t even suggest going out at night this month, let alone during the day.
LEO (JULY 23 – AUGUST 22) Things are moving too slow for you this month in the love ocean. You may want to jump ship, but the seas will be rough for you if you catch my drift. Ok, enough of the sailor references but give your relationship some time, and you’ll have him or her reeled in. VIRGO (AUGUST 23 – SEPTEMBER 22) Ok, looks like you have four planets in your intimate amorous eighth house right now. Yea, I don’t know what that means either, but I am guessing it’s a great thing. It’s your eighth house, which seems like a good time. And the words intimate and amorous are fun words.
AQUARIUS (JANUARY 20 – FEBRUARY 18) This month your first few dates with your new “match” are going to be no good. Awful, actually. Just give it a few times before calling it quits. If it still stinks after that, then I would suggest to quit going out with awful people. PISCES (FEBRUARY 19 – MARCH 20) Here’s the deal. Love is not around every corner for you, Pisces. So if you even remotely have someone who is digging your vibe, attack it with vigor. This is not a time to be picky unless you appreciate loneliness.
