Local Stages Every day more bands are forming and making their appearance on Jacksonville’s stages supported by the city’s nightlife and offered chances to be heard in the entertainment industry; opportunities that may not be offered in other regions of the state or even the country. Jacksonville’s venues are changing with the times to embrace more than the popular and publicized.

SPOTLIGHT

DARA SWEATT Singer/Songwriter Facebook.com/DaraSweattMusic ReverbNation.com/DaraSweatt

“Even if someone else is singing a song I wrote, I just want people to turn on the radio, hear my song and let it hit them.”

MURRAY HILL THEATRE

For the nights when there are limited minor-friendly shows at other venues, the Murray Hill Theatre offers mostly Christian but occasionally secular concerts aimed at the teen scene. The theatre itself is enormous, having been remodeled from an old movie theatre. Murray Hill is complete with its own café featuring street fair food such as nachos, hotdogs and crowd favorite milkshakes, as well as a full music store where visitors can purchase music from bands that have played there in the past or play there on a regular basis. On the first and third Friday of every month when there is no live band, there are events such as swing dance lessons for beginners and professionals. It also offers special events on Christmas where live local bands rewrite their own covers of favorite holiday songs and perform them for crowds that reach up to 300 people.

THE RITZ

The Ritz Theatre has been a gem in Downtown Jacksonville’s Lavilla District since 1929. Focusing on the community’s heritage and culture, the Ritz Theatre expanded into a museum full of treasures from Jacksonville’s history. Today, the Ritz offers a culturally captivating experience offering jazz concerts, theatre performances and events such as The Ritz Amateur Night: Step Up 2 the Mic, where aspiring talents challenge each other to win cash prizes (it’s family friendly, too). The Ritz allows you to rent out space for weddings, charity events and corporate events, all while providing a culturally enriched setting. The Ritz allows you to immerse yourself in true Jacksonville history.

THRASHER-HORNE CENTER

Thrasher-Horne Center first opened its doors on the St. Johns River State College Orange Park campus in 2004. With a plethora of resources, the Thrasher-Horne Center of the Arts offers many children and adult shows, learning opportunities, professional music, theatre and dance. It has two theaters: the main stage and a more intimate studio theater. The main theater seats over 1,700 guests and the studio theater seats about 220 guests. The Thrasher-Horne Center presents the very best of professional music, theatre and dance to diverse audiences of all ages in Northeast Florida. One of Thrasher-Horne’s ultimate goals is to exceed customer expectation by treating them with care, consideration and compassion in a state of the art facility that is accessible, comfortable and convenient. BUZZ: Where did most of your music inspiration come from? DS: I was 9 years old when I wanted to buy my first guitar. My Uncle Skip is in a band called Hippies and Pilots. He’s probably the only family member to really be supportive of my music. I told my parents I wanted to play the guitar at 9 and my mom assumed it would end up in my closet. So I saved up and bought myself my first guitar. BUZZ: What’s your favorite genre of music to sing/write about? DS: ‘90s Alternative and Country BUZZ: What’s your favorite artist to sing/write about? DS: For ‘90s artists, Meredith Brooks, Alanis Morissette. For country artists, Miranda Lambert is my #1. I also love Darius Rucker because he covers ‘90s alternative music and country.

Dara Sweatt on Miranda Lambert: “I love everything about Miranda from her performing, and songwriting to her in general as a person. She’s a badass. She can go through something and instead of letting it wreck her, she uses it as ammo to write a new song, she makes it upbeat and makes it an anthem. Her songs take you to that special place, and she’s able to put it into words. Her music helps you cope with life. That’s what I hope to do with my music. Miranda has many songs that explain how the process of coping with the loss of someone you care for. Her music is a way to cope with that feeling. I hope that in my music, regardless of what I go through, people will feel the way I felt. I hope my writing and songs will help people feel something.”

MUSIC IN THE STREETS

Porchfest Music Festival By: Linda Johnson

Austin Park is a modern rock/country band from Jacksonville, FL, formed by singer-songwriter Jeff Congo and drummer Tim Crawford. Since forming in 2005, the band has performed over 1,000 shows, performing in venues like Tootsies Word Famous Orchid Lounge in Nashville, TN, The Jacksonville Landing in Jacksonville, FL, and GTMO - Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and has provided direct support for a list of national recording artists. A midsummer trip performing a showcase at the World Famous Tootsies Orchid Lounge in Nashville Tennessee proved a worthwhile trip. Shortly after, the band began working with well-known Nashville producers Scott Fairclough (Lifehouse), Sal Oliveri (P!nk, Miranda Lambert, Keith Urban) and Mills Logan (Luke Bryan, Cole Swindell, Toby Keith) on their debut album. Their lead-off song titled “Life in Dixie” (Congo, Faircloth) gained airplay on a popular radio station in Georgia. Since the release of “Life in Dixie,” Austin Park has gained additional airplay on major country radio stations around the southeast with three of their follow up songs “12 Ticks to Midnight,” “Invisible,” and their latest release, “Just a Kiss Away.” In a recent radio spot on WQIK with Morning Radio Host John Scott, he labeled Austin Park as the next Jacksonville breakout act! Austin Park has since been spending their free time between Jacksonville and Nashville putting the finishing touches on their full length album release due out in the fall of 2017.

For additional info and future performance dates, check out AustinParkMusic.com

The festival features music on front porches of local houses as stages, together with a beer garden and main stage for evening performances in Klutho Park. Each year, SPAR has added new elements to the Fest, said Christina Parrish Stone, SPAR Executive Director, and this year will also see a few changes to make the event even bigger and more appealing. The number of musical acts performing has doubled to more than 36, thanks in part to a grant from the Florida Division of Cultural Affairs. Many different genres of music will be represented with performances by local, regional and national artists. A number of the bands are newcomers to the Fest this year while others are familiar faces, and some will appear on the same porches as last year. Be sure to check out The Chris Thomas Band, Mama Blue, The Parker Urban Band and many more.

EVERYBODY’S TALKING>> BILLY BUCHANAN BillyBuchanan.org

Billy Buchanan, originally from Georgia, was raised in Cleveland, OH, and, to the benefit of us Floridians, currently resides in St. Augustine, FL. He has been soaking up all different genres of music since he was a kid, taking everything in to form his current musical outlook that he shares with his crowds. He’s played the same stage alongside a variety of some of the best musicians from the past and present. Combining everything - pop, hip-hop, soul, gospel, and country music - Billy uses all of it in his acoustic brand of indie rock. You can always tell when someone has the music in them. It doesn’t feel forced and it flows out naturally like a breeze. Billy Buchanan’s music is that breeze; you can feel it with every lyric that comes out of his mouth. Photo by Craig O’Neal

In research, what we saw was that Duval county was arresting and locking more girls up than any other county in Florida; including Dade. She [Dr. Revoira] decided to bring leaders from the community together to address this. A lot of the girls that we work with in our community are facing so many additional barriers. A lot of times, school is not a priority when you are growing up in a community where you hear gunshots every night, there is violence in the home, or you have a parent who is working two jobs just to make ends meet.”

“Stumbling Into Sobriety” Book Signing Nov. 9th, 5-9 p.m. Avondale Art Walk

In March of this year, the wheels were coming off the bus. I was experiencing short-term memory loss, vision failure, demonic nightmares, anxiety and depression. I didn’t want to live. But I didn’t want to die. All the while I continued my work as Your Official Funologist. When I finally asked for help, I realized many valuable lessons. The mountain that looked so big in front of me was a mirage. A lie. The recovery process was much easier than I had made it out to be in my head. I also discovered that no one had to know I was in intensive outpatient treatment, including my employers (although I opted to tell them). “Stumbling Into Sobriety” is a work in progress. LEGAL PERSPECTIVE

Considerations when Starting a Business Karsteadt and Stanko JaxCorporateCounsel.com

Many businesses are started without taking all the necessary steps to ensure that the owners have protected themselves and the business. The two issues they see most often are concerns over personal liability and the loss of one or more of the owners. First, personal liability protection. Many people know that they need to file documents with the Secretary of State’s office to start a business. But, depending on the business type and your individual circumstances, there may be additional requirements that a business attorney can help you navigate. Properly incorporating a business limits the personal liability of the owners, which is great in theory. However, if you stop after filing with the Secretary of State, your protection may still be limited. Second, what if the business loses an owner? Many businesses have multiple owners, whether you call them partners, shareholders or members, and no plan for what will happen if one of the owners is unable to continue in the business for any reason. Will you be able to work with your partner’s spouse or children? Will they have any interest in working in the business? What if you and your partner have a falling out and cannot work together anymore? How will you determine the value of the business? Can your partner sell their ownership to anyone they want? These are questions that a business attorney can help you answer now, while the business is stable, rather than later through expensive litigation. If you are considering starting a business, it is important that you take some time to speak with an attorney who is experienced working with startups to guide you through the requirements to do so properly. It may cost additional money now, but it could save you significantly more in the future.

LEGAL LEADER IN JAX William Dobbins DobbinsBlaya.com

What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment as an attorney?

I think there’s a sense of general community involvement at a core level. I first worked at Marks Gray and they valued travel, family and service, and that always stuck with me. I’ve stuck with being involved with local organizations and community groups.

How do you stay connected to the Jacksonville community? Are you involved in any local organizations?

I’m very involved in Avondale, and my cell number is online so I get phone calls just about every day.

Does your firm sponsor any special events throughout the year?

Not yet, we’re still pretty new as a firm. Paying the dues right now, but we intend to once we’re more established.

What advice would you give someone considering going to law school?

Keep an open mind and approach it for what you think it will pragmatically provide you personally.

Why did you choose to go into law? My dad is a lawyer, and I have a lot of lawyers in the family, so it seemed like a good fit. What is your specific field of law? Probate and real estate law. How do you set yourself apart from other firms in the area? Location, for one thing. I’m on the Westside where there aren’t a lot of lawyers. Longevity, also. I’ve been there since 1979, so I have a lot of experience. What do you see as the greatest challenges in your practice? Dealing with personalities of clients, some are like angels while others are a bit difficult. You just have to learn how to handle people. What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment as an attorney? You get a good feeling when you’ve had a successful outcome. You’ve saved the client aggravation and money, and they’re pleased with what you’ve done. There’s been a lot of those instances. How do you stay connected to the Jacksonville community? Are you involved in any local organizations? Westside Business Leaders Association, been in that since ‘93, I believe. Some religious groups. What advice would you give someone considering going to law school? Study hard and then, when you get out, get a mentor to show you the ropes. I had my dad, so that made it a lot easier. the information presented herein reflects only the opinion of the author and not iwantabuzz entertainment magazine, it’s owner, or publisher. all information in iwantabuzz entertainment magazine is for educational purposes only. it is not a substitute for any advice given to you by your lawyer.

LAW SPOTLIGHT Holli Dean

Holli Dean Law HolliDeanLaw.com

What is your specific field of law?

Mostly family law; which includes child custody, adoptions and divorces, but I dabble in criminal a bit and juvenile delinquency.

How do you set yourself apart from other firms in the area?

A big thing to me is personal service. Clients often would complain about attorneys not returning calls, they’re paying all this money and not getting access to what they’re paying for. I have clients texting me at 10 p.m., and I have no problem responding if it’s really important. A lot of clients are scraping together money to pay a lawyer to help them, so it’d be important to me in that situation to be able to talk to my attorney.

What do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment as an attorney?

An award I got through the state, and I received several throughout my career. When I’d come into a situation with my job there’d be a backlog, so I got noticed for maintaining my caseload and helping the office run smoothly. your family. your future. protect what’s yours.

Scheduling holiday time is challenging in its own right, but for parents who share holiday time under a custody arrangement, it can seem impossible to celebrate without conflict. Here are some strategies for enjoying the holidays with as little stress as possible:

Our practice is dedicated

1. Make New Traditions Dividing holiday time may mean you’ll have to change the way you celebrated holidays in the past. Use this as an opportunity to create new traditions with your child. If you generally opened gifts Christmas morning, but that falls on the calendar during the other parent’s time, make a special new tradition of gifts and leaving cookies for Santa on Christmas Eve instead. These new traditions will be special memories and will ease the transition from your old life into your new one.

our skills and support in

2. Practice Kindness We tend to feel more cheerful and generous during the holidays, so be sure to extend some of that to your ex. A little gesture can go a very long way toward keeping the peace, and something as simple as picking up a small gift for them may set a much brighter tone for you both. Remember that your child is watching, and the way you treat your former spouse is an example to them of how to gracefully handle conflict. 3. Remember the Reason The holidays are not a time to compete with your ex or settle old scores. Forgive, forget and focus on the joy of the season and remember that this is a magical time for your child. Be mindful of the things that make this time of year so special and you’ll find that everyone has a much happier holiday. Pablo Rivera

By Jenna Martinez

TACJacksonville.org/Pablo-Rivera

“My passion for art in all its facets is what I am all about. My image making in watercolor really stems from my photographic point of view. I work from life as well as photographs using artistic license to adjust and rearrange elements to suit my vision. Some of my still life paintings have a pleasant, warm fuzzy feeling but others represent inner feelings, such as disappointments, sadness or memories.” Inspired by artists like Andrew Wyeth and Winslow Homer, Pablo Rivera chooses watercolor as his medium to render meaningful and personal contemporary images. He was born in El Barrio, Spanish Harlem section of New York City and graduated from Cooper Union Art School, New York. He attended classes at The School of Visual Arts and The Educational Alliance, also in New York City. His photographs have been exhibited in New York, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Jersey and California. In 2003, Rivera was invited to exhibit his work at Jacksonville International Airport. Other showings of Rivera’s work included The Jacksonville Consortium of African American Artists, The Jacksonville Coalition of Visual Arts, St. Augustine Art Association, The Beaches Fine Arts Series, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Jacksonville and The Ponte Vedra Cultural Center in Ponte Vedra Beach. Photographs of some of Rivera’s sculptures have been used internationally as illustrations for magazine covers, articles, book jackets and advertisements. Rivera continues to grow as an artist taking classes at the University of North Florida and Florida State College at Jacksonville. He is an active member of our Jacksonville art community attending workshops with Charles Reid, Don Andrews, Robert Leedy and Mary Whyte. You can also view Rivera’s watercolor paintings and sculpture at The Art Center Cooperative, Inc. at the Landing.

NORMAN STUDIOS SILENT FILM COMPANY Home to more than 30 film studios in 1916, Jacksonville was known as the “Winter Film Capital” of the world in the early film era. Eagle Film City, a Chicago company housed in Jacksonville, was later purchased by filmmaker Richard E. Norman in 1920, marking the beginning of what is now known as Norman Studios. The Norman Studios Silent Film Company produced films for an AfricanAmerican audience, featuring black actors playing positive roles that challenged stereotypes of that time period. Norman Studios is now being recognized as a new national historic landmark. Norman Studios Silent Film Company produced “race films” made for black audiences, spotlighting black actors in professional roles including business leaders, war heroes and agents for change. Contrasting mainstream portrayals of black actors, Norman Studios represented a turning point for African-Americans in the film industry. Norman Studios is the only preserved film studio in the United States that produced silent films starring black actors. As Norman Studios achieves national historic landmark status, it will become a center for tourism, film education and research.

CENTER STAGE: FEMMES OF ROCK LIVE AT THRASHER-HORNE CENTER Imagine if Hendrix played violin… The Thrasher-Horne Main Stage is set to be rocked on Dec. 1 by the raw power of one of the biggest and most accomplished electric violin acts in the nation: Femmes Of Rock. Led by rock violinist and arranger Nina DiGregorio, Femmes has thrilled audiences worldwide with their blistering solos, unique arrangements, beauty and charm. Femmes Of Rock is just one of several shows presented by Bella Electric Strings, a group of approximately 30 talented musicians based in several U.S. cities who tour as electronic string quartets in a variety of different productions. Similar to theater’s Blue Man Group and Irish dance’s Lord of the Dance, Bella has multiple themed shows crisscrossing the country, and their roster includes the best of the best in the world of electric violin. These girls have performed with some of the biggest names in the business, including Beyoncé, Rod Stewart, Shakira, Ricky Martin, Deep Purple, Cheap Trick, Stevie Wonder, The Killers, Michael McDonald, Andrea Bocelli, Earth, Wind & Fire, Pitbull, America’s Got Talent Season 1 and many, many more. Currently based in Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Orlando, the group will soon make its way to New York City with plans to expand internationally to Europe and Asia within the next few years. Featuring the music of AC/DC, ELO, Queen, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, Jimi Hendrix, Prince, Metallica, David Bowie, Pink Floyd and more, the Femmes Of Rock show takes Bella Strings to a whole new level. All-new arrangements, original material, a live rock band, video, lights, choreography, comedy and more can be expected in this high-energy show that leaves audiences awed. The only one of its kind, there are no other similar string acts operating at this level of production. Be prepared for something that you have not yet seen the likes of. The girls keep a busy touring schedule and are one of the most sought-after “hard rock” violin acts in the world. Tickets for Femmes Of Rock start at $39.00 and are available now through the Thrasher-Horne Center Box Office, by phone at (904) 276-6815 or online at THCenter.org. 400 words

Be Well: Chronic Pain

HEALTHY TAKE:

Physical Therapy

DirectDPT.com

Alternative Methods for Treating Chronic Pain By: Jeff Congo

Drug-free pain management is now a top priority among popular researchers and healthcare providers who have demonstrated that the mind, along with other nonpharmacological remedies, can be a powerful medicine to relieve many kinds of chronic or recurring pain. Acute pain is nature’s warning signal that something is wrong that should be attended to. Chronic pain, however, is no longer a useful warning signal, yet it can lead to perpetual suffering. Many people who suffer from chronic pain get caught in a vicious cycle of inactivity that results in lost muscle strength and further pain problems. Throwing powerful drugs at chronic pain problems may only add to the problem because higher doses are often needed to keep the pain at bay. Knowing this, many healthcare providers are now exploring non-drug, noninvasive treatments, some of which have proved highly effective in relieving chronic pain. Based on evidence from well-designed clinical trials, these complementary approaches may help some patients manage their painful health conditions: • Acupuncture and yoga for back pain • Acupuncture and tai chi for osteoarthritis of the knee • Massage therapy for neck pain

With rising healthcare costs, many people are choosing to see physical therapists for both injury management and prevention. With constantly updated research, legislation and technology, getting quality advice from a physical therapist may be easier than you think. Legislation has included the ability to access a physical therapist directly, without a referral, in all 50 states. This could potentially save you time and money by allowing you to skip the doctor’s visit and avoid unnecessary x-rays, MRIs and medication prescriptions. Going to the PT is shown to be a safe and effective strategy, as physical therapists are trained to look for “red flags” during every patient visit. If those red flags are present at any time the PT can and will refer you to the most appropriate medical specialist.

• Relaxation techniques for severe headaches and migraines Some evidence based studies also suggest that massage therapy and spinal and osteopathic manipulation may be of some benefit to patients with back pain, and relaxation techniques and tai chi may help patients with fibromyalgia find relief. However, there is another popular option that may be easier to find and is usually covered by insurance: physical therapy. A quality physical therapy or occupational therapy treatment plan can often speed recovery and, at the same time, teach people how to avoid conditions that can precipitate or exacerbate their pain.

There are foods that help anxiety, but it is just as important to make sure that you’re not eating foods that contribute to anxiety like fried foods, high glycemic carbs, unrefined sugars and alcoholic beverages. Below are some foods that help lower stress and anxiety. Blueberries Blueberries are more than a delicious fruit; many consider it to be a superfood. It’s rich in vitamins and phytonutrients, with a variety of antioxidants that are considered beneficial for relieving stress. Acai Berries Acai berry is one of the newest superfoods on the market! While it may not be a weight loss fruit, acai berries are rich in phytonutrients like the blueberry, and the antioxidant levels are off the charts. Chocolate Chocolate – especially pure dark chocolate is a great food for those living with anxiety and stress. Chocolate reduces cortisol, the stress hormone that causes anxiety symptoms. There are also compounds inside dark chocolate that improve mood. Healthy eating is one of the best ways to control anxiety and stress. In fact, one of the best things you can add to your diet is more water. Many studies have found that dehydration affects as many as 25% of those with persistent stress or more, and dehydration is known to cause more anxiety. Two Thumbs Up How Good Food Should Taste

Empire City Gastropub Article by Monica Stouder

the facts When: Sunday Afternoon Where: 13475 Atlantic Blvd., Jacksonville, FL 32225 Price: $11 (Brunch menu) to $30 (Dinner menu) Contact: (904) 486-8119 • EmpireCityGastropub.com

No need to bring your light saber here, the new Empire City Gastropub will have you striking back at your plate with simple, forkworthy weapons made of stainless steel. Set your starry-eyed gaze on one eclectic menu that won’t set your wallet back like a multi-billion dollar blockbuster at this new food-n-booze eatery. Brand new off Atlantic Blvd. sits Empire City Gastropub. This delicious, casual eatery boasts a diverse menu of creative items. For instance, my foodie crew devoured the Scottish Egg appetizer. The unusual hollandaise mousse in place of a yolk was not only creative, but a cool twist on the traditional favorite. Some other notable-but-not-tasted items on the brunch and dinner menus include a Wagyu Pastrami on Rye, Pork Belly Eggs Benedict with bacon jam, and a Vegetarian Beet “Tenderloin” consisting of a slow roasted beet ‘loin’, miso demi-glace, and vanilla bean mashed potatoes. All of which will have me coming back to Empire for a sample. The chef and owner Korey Konopasek is onsite and is client interactive, which helps to understand firsthand the temperature of his clients’ likes, needs and wants. I like this – I like this… a lot. Needless to say, the customer service here is outstanding in addition to their delectable dishes!

So, I recommend forging through the galaxy of Jax restaurants with a stop here for some fun sips (Bloody Mary menu is outrageous), a little frivolity and some fantastic food. But I suggest leaving the guy in the black mask that breathes a little too heavy at home as he is grumpy, never pays the bill and always fogs up the drinking glasses. Yes, this Empire stop should definitely be a destination stop for foodie friends and family!

We feel we have a menu that brings in people who like to eat fresh, delicious food.” - Korey Konopasek, owner

Buzzworthy Note: Happy Hour is Monday – Friday 4 to 7 p.m. with $1 off any local beer, $1 off wine by the glass, $1 off signature cocktails and $2 off on call drinks. Saturday – Sunday $12 bottomless Mimosas at brunch service and $20 buckets of craft beers. Plus, there is live music Friday nights, and on Saturdays, Empire hosts Karaoke at 9 p.m.!

Food Truck Foodies Professor Panini by Shelton Buchanan

In college and in law school, I was fortunate to have many great, inspirational professors. However, not a single one of them ever made me something to eat. Then one day, I was fortunate enough to visit the Professor Panini food truck, and they gave me a pop quiz of flavor that took me to school. If you thought choosing a major was tough on you, just wait until you take a look at their menu and try to decide on what you want for lunch. The first thing you’ll notice with their menu is that everything has an emphasis on fresh. These guys aren’t looking to put out mediocre grilled sandwiches in an attempt to make a quick buck; they’re here to offer up some of the hottest and freshest panini concoctions Jacksonville has ever seen. I settled on their “Silicon Valley” with turkey, bacon, tomato, pesto, avocado, American and cheddar. From the outside, the Silicon Valley is almost unassuming and could pass for just about any other panini you might have seen. But after the first bite, you quickly realize it is anything but ordinary. The turkey is moist and thicker than any simple cold cut, while the creaminess of the avocado combines elegantly with the pesto to unleash a flavor bomb in your mouth. Not to be forgotten, the bacon’s crispness reminds you that this panini has some hidden surprises in it for you. All in all, I couldn’t have been happier with my selection despite the fact I needed a nap after finishing it off.

If the paninis aren’t enough for you, Professor Panini also offers up some impressive sides. The bagged chips are nice if you’re just looking for that, but they also offer up crinkle-cut fries tossed in Cajun spice, grilled asparagus tossed in olive oil, garlic, salt, pepper and parmesan, and, my eventual selection, homemade mac n’ cheese with a sprinkling of parmesan on top. So if you want to become teacher’s pet, go find the mobile classroom of Professor Panini and get schooled in deliciousness.

TWO DUDES EATERY

By Anna Heise

TwoDudesRestaurant.com

Tell us about yourself?

Two Dudes is a retro seafood restaurant by the beach that sports some of the freshest and best tasting seafood in Jacksonville. They’ve got the usual seafood spread, as well as seafood tacos, burgers and chicken. The best part is, kids under 8 eat free any day of the week with the purchase of a regular meal.

I began cooking when I was 18, at that time I was in school as a Zoology major and worked a job at Chipotle to make ends meet. I was fortunate to work under a past Army chef, who not only taught me the principles of Chipotle but taught me important things in a real kitchen. A friend of mine worked at Whiskey Jax at the beach brought me into work during a Sunday brunch. I fell in love with Whiskey Jax, and they fell in love with me. Where did you attend culinary school? All of my training has been in the restaurants I have worked in over the years. How long have you been cooking professionally? What I consider professional - eight years. How would you explain your style of cooking? Asian Cajun is the branding I wanted. I have always been a fan of Asian food, the flavors and how they all come together; plus the diversity of the ingredients, the vegetables, starches and noodles. I love southern food and found Asian food pairs with it very well.

THE HAPPY GRILLED CHEESE

KABOB-E

TheHappyGrilledCheese.com

Kabob-e.com

While The Happy Grilled Cheese started out as a wildly popular local food truck, it has recently expanded into a brick and mortar store in Downtown. The Happy Grilled Cheese’s menu focuses on many different variations of the traditional grilled cheese sandwich, some including several different types of meats and cheeses, and different types of soup.

For those looking to try new things or are familiar with Middle Eastern food, Kabob-e offers a wide variety of options to choose from. While gyros and kabobs are the main focus of their menu, they offer many other options featuring chicken, beef or lamb.

TREEMENDOUS BBQ

TreemendousBBQ.com Treemendous BBQ has both a food truck and physical location on the Westside of Jacksonville. Here you’ll find some of the best BBQ in town with meats such as chicken, brisket, ribs, pork and turkey as well as other items such as fried gator tail, shrimp and fish.

Do you have a signature dish or a favorite dish you enjoy cooking? One is a Hoisin Braised Lamb Shank, and when I have an opportunity, I roll Sushi. We try and feature Sushi on the menu once a month. One of my favorite contains eel, strawberry, avocado and white asparagus if it’s in season. Eel and strawberry is an exciting flavor yet very straightforward. What makes Whiskey Jax special? Both of our locations are in odd areas. We have done an outstanding job growing our business at both the Baymeadows and Beach location. Being privately owned allows us a more personal relationship with our customers. We are very attentive to our menu and use only the freshest product available. We locally source as much as possible. Is there a particular audience for your food? We are lucky across the board at both restaurants. From the 18 to 24 year old customers to the retired crowd, we see some are appetizer heavy and others entrée focused. We do offer some straightforward everyday food, comfort food yet they are all very flavorful. We do have some adventurous dishes for those who are inclined. I have to say we have some of the best wings in town.

Game Day: Jacksonville Axemen Rugby League

TRIPLE PLAY:

Rugby

Jacksonville Rugby Football Club JaxRugby.org

The Jacksonville Rugby Football Club is a USA Rugby Men’s Division II Rugby team and a member of the Florida Rugby Union. The teams compete in the South region of USA Rugby along with teams from Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. In-state, the teams play opponents such as Orlando, Miami, Tampa, Ft. Lauderdale, Boca Raton and Naples. JaxAxe.com

The Jacksonville Axemen Rugby League team has been bringing hard hits to Jacksonville, FL since 2006. The team was founded by Head Coach Daryl “Spinner” Howland and General Manager Drew Slover as an expansion team of the American National Rugby League (AMNRL). Since their beginning, they have developed into one of the most successful rugby league football clubs in the United States both on and off the field. They advanced to the AMNRL playoffs in 2006, 2008 and 2009, and won the 2010 AMNRL Championship. The following year they became one of seven teams to depart the AMNRL to form the new USARL (USA Rugby League), which began in the summer of 2011.

Over the years, the Jacksonville Axemen have included several exceptional rugby league talents, including former USA Tomahawk player Spinner Howland, former NRL and European Super League player Sean Rutgerson and former NRL player and National Australian Kangaroo Shannon Hegarty. The Jacksonville Axemen roster has also included USA National Rugby League Tomahawks; Bob Knoepfel, Matt Clark, Kenny Britt, Akarika Dawn, Brent Shorten, Matt Thornton, Taco Pope and current co-captain of the USA Tomahawks, Apple Pope. Rugby League and the Jacksonville Axemen offer an exciting game day experience and draw an average of 2,500 fans per regular season home game. In additional to the excitement on the field, each game day includes full concessions, $1 beer, prizes given away at halftime, team merchandise for sale and the always entertaining Axe-Maiden Cheerleaders. Complimentary programs are on hand to help newcomers learn the rules of rugby league, and the players greet the fans after every game to take photos and allow kids to collect autographs of their favorite players.

The Jacksonville Rugby Clubs and Cecil Field POW/ MIA Memorial are thankful for everyone’s hard work and dedication in making this event into a wonderful success! Thank you to the sponsors, golfers and volunteers!

St. Augustine Rugby Club Facebook.com/PG/St-Augustine-Rugby-Club

St. Augustine Rugby was founded on the basis that many athletes in the local area who have either moved on from college or are still in college not playing sports still find themselves looking for that competitive rush of a team sport. Most players who join the game have had no experience and little knowledge of the game itself. St. Augustine Rugby is a vehicle for spreading the knowledge of the sport and the social venue that comes with it.

GEAR UP>>SPORTS MEDICINE MOMENT Ankle Strains By Tristen Robinson

An ankle strain is an over-stretch of a muscle or tendon. Tendons connect muscle to bone. When a muscle is stretched beyond its capacity, the fibers that make up the muscle tear, causing a strain. The muscles that move the ankle are in the front, back and outside of the ankle. The muscles that are commonly strained in the ankle are the muscles on the lateral (outside) of the ankle. Those muscles are called the peroneals. The peroneal muscles are strained when there is excessive inversion. The mechanism of injury for an ankle sprain is excessive inversion. Signs and symptoms of a muscle strain are similar to any other strain in the body. There may be pain along the muscle belly, pain with muscle movement and swelling. Treatment for strains would consist of P.R.I.C.E. and depending on the severity, rehabilitation exercises. Of all the injuries discussed this month, this is the least frequent. As always, consult a healthcare professional with any questions or concerns. 28

FEEL the BEAT

BON IVER -by Karlyn McKell

STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC:

Indie rock group Bon Iver will play in St. Augustine for the first time this November. The band has won two Grammy awards and continues to receive critical acclaim for their evolving indie rock sound. Singer-songwriter Justin Vernon of Wisconsin is behind the project’s ethereal sound; he has been recording music as Bon Iver since 2006, acting as his own producer and engineer on every track. In 2008, Bon Iver reached critical acclaim after the release of their first album “For Emma, Forever Ago.” Vernon recorded the album as a solo project; notable tracks from the first album include “Skinny Love” and “Re:Stocks”. Other musicians would join Vernon on his further releases, adding a layer of complexity to Bon Iver’s intimate acoustics. In their most recent release 22, A Million, Bon Iver experiments with electronic music and hip hop production techniques. Before the show, check out “Holocene,” “Blood Bank,” “33 ‘GOD’” and the band’s newest single “Coming Down (Triple J like a version).”

A long familiar voice, Ivan Pulley’s debut solo album is a mature statement. “All in this Together” isn’t a coming of age record because, it’s already there. This is twelve tracks of introspection without tacky, morose melancholy. Reminiscent of a new generation Neil Young and at times Austin, Texas’ very own Ben Kweller, Pulley plays multiple instruments and incorporates harmonies throughout this album. Opening with “Have You Seen the Light,” he challenges an ex-paramour steadily through acoustic guitar. The theme of love lost runs rampant but, you won’t feel sad or restless listening to “All in this Together.” You will here tinges of southern rock all throughout. You will also hear great solos and arrangements. Pulley also calls himself out in the process while holding everything together in “Had Enough.” The record ends with the title track. It’s an optimistic closer that rounds out with the soft demand, “Tell me what you see in me.” Ivan Pulley can be seen throughout Jacksonville and he is headed to Nashville this November. He recently became the second runner up at this year’s regional IBC Challenge held in September. Just recently released, this album recorded by Chris Flowers at A1A Studios is a solid introduction that is pensive, aware and earnest.

WILDIFIRE RISING Nov. 3 JacksonvilleLanding.com/event/bbqfest

WildFire Rising is a combination of passion, fire and experience that includes Melissa Smith, Ivan Pulley, Sebastion Stuto and Michael Calderin. You can hear it in her enthusiasm when she describes them, this is her dream band. Melissa belted out Bonnie Raitt’s “Something to Talk About,” leaving the crowd in awe as evidenced by the standing ovation she received after hitting the epic high note that is the song’s signature. She headed to Nashville, dream in hand, and was offered a record deal at the age of 17. Melissa went with her gut and declined the offer not feeling it was right for her. She took her God given gift to Jacksonville, sharing the stage with Artemis Pyle at Freebird in its glory days and performing with Keith Urban to a crowd of 40,000 people. She refers to singing with Urban at Country Superfest as another definitive moment that making music was absolutely what she was meant to do. This is the second of many more of its kind and Melissa has even dropped some hints for the next one, rumor has it that Kim Reteguiz of the Black Cat Bones may be joining the already impressive roster of female chanteuses. This writer believes that the goal of celebrating each artist’s individual talents while coming together will continue to be achieved.

CATCHIN' A BUZZ Interview by Anna Heise

RESTAURANT ORSAY RestaurantOrsay.com

What is unique about your bar area? We are held to a very high standard and management highly values our suggestions. Every bartender who has been here six months or longer is allowed to develop and add their cocktail to the menu. Not many establishments allow that; it makes our bar more creative, with not just one style or what a corporation is dictating. When is Happy Hour? Happy Hour is 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, 11 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday. What kind of weekly drink specials do you offer?

MIXOLOGY

Hey Jealousy

¾ oz. Aperol 2 oz. house infused cucumber gin ¾ oz. freshly pressed lemon juice Shake vigorously, pour into chilled glass and top with a splash of sparkling wine, garnish with lemon peel.

We call them our Orsay Standards on happy hour, at a lower price point than our regular cocktail menu; we also offer local beers and wine. Tell us about your best-selling drink. I would say the East Bound and Down which is our twist on a Blood and Sand, instead of using scotch we use smoked bourbon that we smoke in house. The Blood Orange Martini, a simple drink. Tart and not too sweet made with house-infused vodka. On the regular menu there is the Hey Jealousy which is a twist on a Gin Blossom and a popular choice. When customers are having a great time at your business what are they doing? They are mostly just hanging out, eating bar snacks and unwinding from the day. On a busy night they just like to sit and watch us make drinks. It does get quite hectic, it’s like putting on a show. What do you want more people to know about your business? Perhaps that more than excellent dining, we offer a relaxed atmosphere, attentive service in a friendly environment. You can come in and relax have a good time and enjoy.

NOVEMBER HOROSCOPE

by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire

ARIES (March 21- April 19)

I do appreciate your creativity, but come on now, your online profile on those dating sites is a little too over the top. Crank it down a few notches, to let’s say, the truth. People can like the real you, can’t they?

TAURUS (April 20 – May 20)

Your sign is the marrying or long-term love type. Thus, if you’re single with no prospects, that’s just a kick in the balls. If you’re not the marrying type, you are either reading the wrong horoscope or you just need to realize you are going to be hunkering down.

GEMINI (May 21 – June 21)

Zone

This month your critical side will rear its ugly head. Either nit-picking at your mate for stuff that doesn’t really matter, or for you single Gemini, well, you will be alone. You will be looking for that perfect person in this woeful of an imperfect place. It’s like you don’t even own a mirror yourself.

CANCER (June 22 – July 22)

Your passionate fifth house is heating up. While you’re out craving attention and being flirtatious with nearly everyone, remember while this may be fun, outside of Utah, you can only have one person at a time (legally). So fine tune your love-arrow shooting device and hone in on one target for now.

LEO (July 23 – August 22)

Seems your ‘swagger’ is returning from a long hiatus. According to my subscription of “How to Write Horoscopes” Mars is visiting your sign and you won’t need to try to attract admirers, they will be noticing you regardless. So enjoy a month in the sun before it all turns back to normal.

VIRGO (August 23 – September 22)

I just read another horoscope, and it said for Virgo to sacrifice lunches to be more productive at work. That is an interesting way of saying you need to lose weight. Why do they have to beat around the bush? Life is hard enough being fat, but being called lazy also? That is too much.

LIBRA (September 23 – October 22)

I could go for a Cinnabon right about now. Couldn’t you? Mmmm. Anyways… love is right around the corner or ask out that current crush out or something. Everything is a bit hazy when all I can think about is eating a Cinnabon. And all that icing…

SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21)

That number you thought about calling or texting isn’t going to dial itself. You managed to get the number; what was the point of doing that? So you could walk around in a Boston accent annoying your friends saying, “How bout them apples.” Call the person already.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21)

Emotions are running high, and you could go either way this month. Vulnerable and pathetic, or in-charge and finding your potential mate. Pathetic is pretty easy for you these days, but I have a feeling another month alone isn’t really what you want.

CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19)

Looks like you have an attraction close to home, such as a friend, co-worker, etc. Someone you currently see daily. Now hopefully you are single and this can blossom. But I know most of you Goats are married, so you will be tempted and most likely fail. As weak as Eve and that apple.

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18)

Mars visits Leo this month and puts the sizzle back into your love life this month. But also this will make you impatient and irritable. Your mate’s habits don’t seem so cute or endearing anymore. Man, there is just no pleasing you Aquarius.

PISCES (February 19 – March 20)

It is becoming the holiday season, which is a lonely time for your love life Pisces. Shopping for just family can be fun too! And all those holiday romantic comedies you can enjoy with… well they are fun by yourself too. With the money you are saving, buy yourself a gift.
