Making a Difference: non-profit leaders in our community
“
It is a wonderful feeling to know that you’ve helped a child to overcome a speech disorder that might otherwise ostracize him/her from classmates and derail academic progress,” said Howland. “It’s not just a short-term
correction, but one with potentially life-long impact. Similarly, to see an elderly couple come into the center having difficulty communicating and see them walking out with smiles because one of them can now hear effectively gives all of us great joy.”

MICHAEL HOWLAND JACKSONVILLE SPEECH & HEARING CENTER | SHCJAX.ORG
Michael Howland is the CEO of Jacksonville Speech and Hearing Center. The Jacksonville Speech and Hearing Center knows that treatment for speech language and/or hearing disorders is not just about the individual, but about the family as well. They are passionate about enabling families to connect, communicate, and care for one another. Howland has extensive experience in this arena. He is currently Chair Elect at Family Foundations and on the Leadership Jacksonville Leadership Development Team. He attended Jacksonville University and St. Louis University. In the past, Howland was the CEO of four associations of national charities. He was also the VP and Chief Strategic Relations Officer at JU. Howland has a wife of 35 years and three children.

interesting person I’ve interviewed on First Coast Connect. This month, it’s a duo! I’m happy to share the news that two leading citizens of Jacksonville, Abel Harding and Donna Deegan, are collaborating on a new show called #JaxPolLive. This “political happy hour” will bring a live politics show to Intuition Ale in downtown Jacksonville. The monthly show kicked off in October, and features expert discussion on topics as diverse as the 2016 presidential race and a local anti-discrimination ordinance.

Their mission is Every Relationship Violence-Free. They work to ensure safety for victims and their children, empowerment of victims, and social change. In 1976, a group of women purchased the house and opened its doors as the first shelter specifically for victims of domestic violence and their children in Florida.
“We feel there is a yearning for a frank discussion around the political issues and players in this city,” said Harding, a former journalist and North Florida market president for IBERIABANK. “We aim to bring fun and intelligent discussion to a live audience that will be able to participate in the conversation.” “I look forward to doing what my family did growing up,” said Deegan, award-winning former news anchor, philanthropist, and creator of the 26.2 With Donna Marathon. “Sit around the table and argue politics!” You can be part of the show during live broadcasts at Intuition Ale or catch the stream of the show online. ccentuate does exactly what its name implies – elevate your style! Mona Cobb has brought an experience to Jacksonville unlike any other. Your eyes will light up when you walk into her store. With intricate, statement jewelry, fully bedazzled purses, unique leather accessories, and simply elegant clothing, Accentuate will not cease to amaze. New York influences exude from the store, creating an atmosphere of fashion, sophistication, and style!
BUZZ: Where do you get such gorgeous accessories and inspiration? MC: New York. A lot of our accessories come from New York. I was able to go to a fashion show there and connect with a couple designers. We’re working together to get these one-of-a-kind pieces.
BUZZ: Do you sell anything here exclusively? MC: Every piece is exclusive. I wanted to bring something to Jacksonville that you don’t see everywhere. It’s different and it’s cost effective. You get something stylish, unique, and fashionable. You’ll be a showstopper!
BUZZ: How did you get into fashion? MC: I worked in the shop of a fashionable German lady. She was going to
close her shops and needed my help packing up. As I started pulling out items, I thought ‘Man she could be selling this stuff.’ She said I could and soon enough, everything started selling! She ended up staying open eight more years and had me directing her store. I realized it was a gift.
CURRY SPOTLIGHT
FB: International Law. I’m one of 42 who are board certified in international law, and the only one you can hire in Jacksonville. I handle business immigration and international litigation cases as well.
BUZZ: How many employees and locations do you have? FB: I have five employees with locations in Jacksonville, Orlando, and Miami, which I commute amongst quite often.
BUZZ: How do clients benefit from your services?
FB: Everyone benefits from legal advice, but especially when you’re a little bit foreign or from another state. We benefit them by ensuring they don’t make mistakes. We’re sort of a guide between the regulatory and legal fields. You could argue that anything a lawyer does is like a preventative practice.
BUZZ: What are some challenges you like to overcome in your business? FB: Explaining everything from A to Z, like training a young person in business. They come in with preconceived notions from either their homeland or on America, and I have to guide them through all details to make sure they understand what they’re doing or not doing.
BUZZ: What is your greatest accomplishment as an attorney? FB: From a lawyer perspective, I overturned a $4.5 million judgment against a client. On personal level, it was helping a local woman get assets from her deceased husband in Europe.

ROASTED VEGETABLES Your kids can have fun helping you prepare Thanksgiving dinner! Cut vegetable of choice, such as carrots, parsnips potatoes, squash, tri-colored bell peppers and/ or green beans. Have your child toss them in olive oil, salt, and pepper. Roast at 400 degrees for approximately 20 mins. After 10 minutes, check and toss them. Serve warm. FRESH CRANBERRY SAUCE Combine 1 cup of sugar with 1 cup of water in a medium saucepan. Bring to boil. Add fresh cranberries, return to boil about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Cool at room temperature, then cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. This is great to make a day ahead!
CRUNCHY CHICKPEAS Drain a can of chickpeas, pat dry with a paper towel. In a bowl, toss chickpeas with a drizzle of olive oil and salt. Spray baking sheet with non-fat olive oil spray and then spread chickpeas on pan. Roast at 400 for approximately 30 minutes. Toss about every 10 minutes to prevent burning. Let cool to get crunchy.

When Dr. Norberto Benitez started working in private pediatric practice, he realized frantic parents wanted a doctor to call at midnight when a child was ill or screaming in pain, Benitez said.
“What I really loved about pediatrics is that you could make your patients better,” Dr. Alexandra Kostur said. Kostur and staff provide classes for expectant parents and best car seats for kids.

Health Review: Nutrition in a Cup
ASK THE DOC
HEALTH SPOTLIGHT
Dr. Prasanthi Reddy
More Than Yogurt It’s not just tasty yogurt families and kids experience. Menchie dolls and merchandise are available. Art work made by customers is displayed and celebrated.
Medical Director Rainbow Pediatrics Center
Menchie’s Frozen Yogurt staff want to serve you health in a cup – literally. “You can really taste the difference,” said Catherine Courtney, who is co-owner of the store off Hodges and Beach boulevards. “This is not product with flavored water.” Yogurt flavors include Fresh Shredded Coconut and Power Pomegranate Acai. Fresh cut fruit like strawberries and bananas can be used for toppings, and the yogurt contains calcium, probiotics, and protein.
Menchie’s Weekly Specials At Pablo Creek Plaza, “Spin to Win” the prize wheel on Mondays. Fill your cup to the brim on Tuesdays for $5. Waffle Wednesday means a free waffle cone with froyo.
Perhaps the most notable difference about Menchie’s franchises is that yogurt is single-sourced from a 100-year-old family dairy in California. Cows are raised without artificial growth hormones, according to Menchie’s fact sheet. For more information, visit Facebook.com/ MenchiesPabloCreekPlaza.
Keeping the Calories Low Menchie’s yogurt contains as little as 45 calories for four ounces. In addition to non-dairy sorbet, options include non-fat, low carb, vegan and no sugar added. Courtney said her team can cater events on-site and off-site and is perfect for office parties, school events and playgroups. She and her team recently catered a wedding.
BUZZ: ACCORDING TO THE CDC,
CHILDHOOD OBESITY HAS MORE THAN DOUBLED IN CHILDREN IN THE PAST 30 YEARS. WHAT ADVICE DO YOU GIVE? DOC: I think it’s first and foremost the parents who set the example. Eat well and be active and the kids will follow suit.
BUZZ: WHAT AGE DO YOU SEE
EXCESS WEIGHT GAIN START IN SOME CHILDREN? DOC: As young as 2-and 3-yearold toddlers – when parents began to introduce solid foods.
BUZZ: WHAT DO YOU THINK IS
CAUSING OBESITY NUMBERS TO RISE? DOC: It’s multi-faceted. It’s the ability to have access to healthy fruit and vegetables. Also, parents give liquid calories to their kids that add to weight gain.
Jenna Braddock Make Healthy Easy
Everyone knows that good nutrition is important. So why is eating healthy so challenging to do? Jenna Braddock said she understands. As a registered dietician nutritionist, she designed a blog to make healthy eating easier. Braddock wants you to know she goes through the same struggles. Busy lifestyles, demanding careers, and raising children – it’s a lot. “It’s not just snap your fingers and vegetables appear on my plate,” Braddock said.
FOR KIDS?
Braddock, who also teaches nutrition classes at University of North Florida, said she has a easy tip for busy professionals and parents.
as they used to be. Even in infancy we want to encourage making it a part of everyday living. We encourage parents to go for walks and go to local gyms. Kids are meant to play.
“Don’t let food just happen to you,” Braddock said. It’s important to put a little thought into the day and plan simple things like a fruit snack or a few minutes to eat breakfast, she said.

His favorite medium is painting on boards using mixed media, such as tempura, acrylic, and gouache, which is an opaque paint similar to watercolor that is rendered like oil. His subjects are often abstracts and landscapes, mostly around Northeast Florida. His works are easily identifiable as in, “that’s a Mike Perry piece.” They have a softness and a tranquility that sets them apart from other paintings. He brought to our BUZZ TV set a few large panels, including a gorgeous one called “Silver Lining” of a local marsh scene along Heckshire Drive. Although he often paints from his photographs, the quality that makes his paintings different from others is that he pushes to the edge of abstraction. He doesn’t try to replicate a picture. Perry says of abstracts that they are “a diet of the mind and a freeing way to work.”
“Abstracts are a diet of the mind and a freeing way to work.” As identifiable as his paintings are, he has quite a few that are a bit out of character. He says that’s often his way of working on color, texture, and form. Perry is inspired by nature and his surroundings. He recreates the four seasons, high and low tides, the changing light and skies, and the way the colors look in the fall as opposed to the spring. He can even find inspiration in the patina of a concrete sidewalk. His installations can be found at Nordstrom, Raymond James Financial, Baptist Hospital, and other distinguished locations. His most recent collection of paintings can be found at the newly renovated wing of Ronald McDonald House. To see more of his works or purchase for yourself, visit Stellars Gallery or his website at MikePerryFineArt.com.
CENTER STAGE: TRACY MORGAN By Tiara Bree Jeffers THCENTER.ORG
For the first time ever, Tracy Morgan is coming to Jacksonville on his “Picking Up the Pieces Tour.” Catch his performance at the Thrasher-Horne Center in Orange Park on November 12. Morgan has been a front-runner in comedy for the last 23 years. Starting off his career on one of the paramount comedic-sketch shows, “Saturday Night Live,” he was destined for success. Moving on to bigger roles in movies such as “A Thin Line Between Love and Hate,” “Death at a Funeral,” and “Cop Out,” his comedic genius shines as he does what he loves. With his authentic personality, racy jokes, and comedic timing, there’s no way he would leave the game, even after his tragic car accident in 2014. Although Morgan was once in critical condition, he made his grand return to stand-up comedy in October 2015. He cherished that moment, his fans, and the ones he loves. BUZZ Editor Tiara Bree Jeffers got the opportunity to speak with Morgan before his show in town. BUZZ: What is one thing you want to do in this life that you haven’t already? Tracy Morgan: I want to have a son with my wife. BUZZ: How important do you think comedy, arts, and entertainment are for youth in today’s society? TM: Imagine a world without it. Imagine a world without laughter. Imagine a world without comedy. We’re doomed. BUZZ: Can you expand further? TM: God has a sense of humor. While you’re making plans, he’s laughing. ‘Oh

BUZZ: Have you ever been to Jacksonville? TM: No, I haven’t. I look forward to it though. I love spreading my funny around, all around the world. BUZZ: What can the audience expect of your Jax debut? TM: I’m going big with a private jet! What I’ve been giving you for 23 years. BUZZ: You’ve had such a long career. Tell me about your lifestyle. TM: All I need is $1500 and a new pair of kicks. The rest is for my family. BUZZ: Could you really survive off that? TM: I know I could. I’m from the hood. I’m a survivor.

Food Truck Foodies
Best Burgers by Shelton Buchanan
When you call yourself “Best Burgers,” that’s making a claim that most would find hard to back up. The Best Burgers truck, however, is ready to live up to their namesake by offering up some truly amazing burger concoctions. Whether you’re a burger purist sticking to the standard fare of toppings, a bit of an adventurer with a taste for the exotic, or even someone looking for a non-beef burger, Best Burgers has something for you. We were looking for a little bit of the traditional with just a hint of wild. A little bit country and a little bit rock ‘n’ roll, if you will. Their Best Shroom ’N’ Swiss seemed up to the task. They load up the patty with sautéed mushrooms and onions, layer on the lettuce, tomato, and swiss cheese, load up the bacon, and slather the beast in their Best Burger sauce. Rich and hearty doesn’t do it justice when searching for words to describe, but be prepared for a little spicy bite from the Best Burger sauce. This reporter is a bit of a wimp when it comes to spicy food, so don’t take this review as a warning of an oral inferno, but rather as a heads-up for those with the same issue. When you’re having a burger, you must have fries! Best Burgers has three offerings on their menu in the form of seasoned curly fries, sweet potato fries, and the pure insanity that is their bacon queso fries. We opted for the seasoned curly fries. Golden brown perfection with a slight spice note, these fries are a curly delight when paired with the delicious burger. Time will tell if Best Burgers truly worthy of their name, as this town has quite a few burgers for us to try, but for now, they’re serving up something quite tasty. UNF MEN’S BASKETBALL UNF Ospreys vs. Auburn Nov. 11 at Auburn CATCH IT ON: SEC Network
Are you ready for some basketball? The season at the University of North Florida is about to start and you don’t want to miss the buzzer beater. The University of North Florida men’s basketball team faces another challenging schedule with 14 home games and 17 away games. Their schedule includes several match-ups against nationally recognized programs. Last season, the Ospreys finished with a 22-12 (10-4 ASUN) record and claimed a second straight ASUN Conference regular season crown. They also advanced to play in a national postseason tournament for the second time in program history. The Ospreys hosted the Florida Gators in the opening round of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). Three starters and eight letter winners return from the squad that led the nation in three-point shooting and ranked in the Top 10 nationally in scoring. In addition to a successful overall team performance, individual player accolades are not to be ignored.
HEAD COACH HIGHLIGHT “Entering our eighth season it has become a common theme that our non-conference slate will provide us tremendous opportunities in preparation for a competitive ASUN schedule,” said head coach Matthew Driscoll, who owns a 118-112 mark at UNF. “This year, unlike in the past, our home schedule includes some Power 5 teams which makes it the most challenging of our tenure. Once again the ASUN is loaded with a great deal of talent and experience, and combined with strong coaching throughout the league brings parity to an all-time high. With just 14 league games, a premium is placed on each night of competition and that makes for an exciting journey.”
ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT
2016-17 SEASON STARTS The Ospreys open their Silver Anniversary 25th season of competition (12th year at the NCAA Division I level), Nov. 11 on the road against Auburn. UNF then tips off their home slate Nov. 14 against Edward Waters before welcoming Sweet 16 participant Miami on Nov. 16. North Florida’s non-conference schedule features a pair of home games against Power 5 Conference in-state foes Miami and Florida along with road tests against several other teams from high major conferences including the SEC: Auburn, LSU, Arkansas, ACC: Syracuse, and American Conference: Connecticut. In addition, UNF will battle some strong mid-major powers -- North Dakota, Wright State, FIU and Ball State. It’s going to be a great season in Swoop Life.
• Dallas Moore was awarded ASUN Player of the Year. In his senior year as a guard, he joined the UNF 1,000 Point Club and became the all-time leading scorer in UNF program history. The St. Petersburg, FL native enters this year with 1,625 career points and is on the pace to become the eighth player in league history to reach 2,000. • Senior Chris Davenport also joined UNF 1,000 Point Club and became the fourth players in program history with 600 or more rebounds. He is ranked 2nd in ASUN and 47th in the nation for blocked shots. Davenport is the 3rd player in UNF history with 100 or more blocked shots. • Former UNF player and All-Atlantic Sun performer, Beau Beech became the first player in UNF program history to sign an NBA deal. The Brooklyn Nets signed this standout player for their 2016-17 season. Season tickets are on sale now! For more info, visit UNFOspreys.com.

The Sharks are changing leagues. The AFL is losing members and likely folding operations for good. The Sharks will play in a rival league and other teams from the AFL will likely join Jacksonville. The Sharks had a nice run in the AFL with a 2011 Arena Bowl Championship and runner-up in 2015.
Former Jacksonville Jaguars player passed away from a heart attack in October. Groves, 32, was a second-round pick in 2008 for the Jags and went onto play for six other franchises in seven years. Groves had a heart condition coming out of Auburn, but was cleared to play.

The Dolphins hoop team will begin year three with many players returning from last year’s Atlantic Sun runner-up squad. Jasick got more out of the Dolphins last year than most expected, but with two years under his belt and a renovated Swisher Gymnasium, they are expecting big things at JU.
UNF Ospreys Basketball
The UNF Ospreys also begin play in November. Driscoll enters year eight and has brought the Ospreys to new heights. EVANESCENCE -by Tiara Bree Jeffers
STORY BEHIND THE MUSIC: Evanescence’s third album is self-titled for a reason: 15 years after its formation, the multi-platinum band has made the most collaborative, united album of its career. And it rocks. “Coming back together is such a beautiful and happy thing,” co-founder and lead singer Amy Lee said of making “Evanescence,” the group’s first album since 2006’s “The Open Door.”
1/4 color
The album, produced by Nick Raskulinecz (Alice In Chains, Deftones), packs a wallop with a unified vision that can only come from a group working together as a creative unit. The project’s premiere single, “Bring Me to Life,” snagged the band a Grammy for best hard rock performance. Other massive hits followed, including “My Immortal,” and “Call Me When You’re Sober,” establishing Evanescence as worldwide tour headliners. The break between “The Open Door” and “Evanescence” provided the band with much-deserved rest, but also some clarity as to how important what they had created meant to them. Now, Evanescence’s thoughts have turned to returning to the road. “This record is so geared for live shows,” said Lee. “We were thinking about playing live the whole time we were writing it.”

Fans can expect to hear many of Fantasia’s hit songs including songs from her latest album, “The Definition Of….” The album debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s R&B Album chart, number two on the Overall Album chart, and number six on the Billboard 200 chart. “The Definition Of…” received rave reviews from critics and fans across the country. Channeling Tina Turner…she is the definition of a star.” Entertainment Weekly stated, “There’s more of that smoky, jazzy vibe throughout the LP, with Fantasia presiding over the affair as its soulful chanteuse.” Openers Guordan Banks and American Idol star, La’Porsha Renae, will join the headline singer. Guordan Banks is a songwriter and contemporary R&B balladeer with a smooth, mildly raspy delivery. His mood-diverse debut EP/ mixtape, “A Song for Everyone,” appeared in 2014 and offered featured performances by Ayo and rappers Meek Mill, Omelly, and Wale. It was released on Meek Mill’s Dream Chasers Records. Fantasia was one of La’Porsha’s mentors as she competed on this last farewell season of American Idol. She made it to the top two and got to sing duets with Fantasia along the way. Their duets moved people to tears, warranted standing ovations and resulted in this inevitable dynamic duo.

The album’s lead single, “Circle,” earned Ghost a 2016 Grammy Award for Best Metal Performance. Ghost is known for their eccentric stage presence. The six-member band performs in face-concealing masks and costumes, keeping their true identities a secret. Marissa Nadler will be opening the show for the band. For more than 12 years, Marissa Nadler has perfected her own take on the exquisitely sculpted gothic American song form. On her seventh full-length, “Strangers,” she has shed any self-imposed restrictions her earlier albums adhered to, stepped through a looking glass, and created a truly monumental work.

NOVEMBER HOROSCOPE
Written by Kyle, Astrologer Extraordinaire
ARIES (March 21- April 19) An old flame is coming into the picture this month. It may have ended badly with this person, but we both know how desperate you’ve been lately. So let’s see what happens this time. I have a feeling it will remind you why you broke up in the first place. TAURUS (April 20 – May 20) I was told for you Taurus, “The best part of dating is the courtship phase.” Now let me get this right. Courtship means, “the wooing of one person by another.” So therefore, you are good at wooing. Yes, wooing. Guess you have to be good at something. GEMINI (May 21 – June 21) According to another horoscope, “An off-hand comment from your partner will offer some insight about what is on their mind.” I think this is only going to lend to anger on your part. Thus, ignore your partner all month. You’ll thank me. CANCER (June 22 – July 22) Supposedly you should be looking into your goals in life and setting them for 10 years from now. I thought we lived the paycheck-to-paycheck lifestyle? Really, 10 years from now? Seriously, I am sure there is a sale somewhere. Let’s go spend some money. LEO (July 23 – August 22) I read this nugget about you Leo, “People tend to trust those who believe in themselves without being pompous.” Translation: Confident is great. Know-it-all equals a lot of alone time. VIRGO (August 23 – September 22) This month your pals are going to be down in the dumps and will need a pick-meup from you. Doesn’t sound like a lot of fun to me. I would recommend trying to find new friends. LIBRA (September 23 – October 22) According to the web this month, “accept any invites you get today for some quality hang-out time. Head to the local bowling alley and show off your knockingdown-pin skills.” That was their advice. Pathetic, I know. Go to the alley and show off your knock-back-drink skills sounds way more fun. SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21) I know your birthday is soon, but here’s a secret for you. You can’t keep one. Apparently, you don’t understand what a secret is. According to UrbanDictionary. com it means, “I can’t tell ya.” Hmm, looks like I can’t tell you. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21) A good sense of humor can save you from a really bad date this month. Unfortunately, it seems like you will be going on a more than one bad date this month. That’s okay though. Get the bad ones out of the way before the holidays. CAPRICORN (December 22 – January 19) This is what I read online today for you Capricorn, “Instead of falling for the flyby-night romantic you might be better off giving your heart to a more grounded individual. It might not sound as exciting now, but stability can be sexy.” I couldn’t disagree more. Go for fly-by-night. AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18) Sometimes a new romance may feel “too good to be true.” All you have to do in this scenario is dump the person before the truth out weighs the good. Sound advice if you ask me. PISCES (February 19 – March 20) It’s time to upscale your dates. That is if you are getting dates. I am guessing you’re not. Regardless, it’s time to start spending some money or ask to be taken to a nicer place. These dates still may be bad, but at least they will be fancy. November 2016 • iwantaBUZZ.com
